The solvent extraction separation of iron from a zinc sulfate medium using DEHPA was investigated. After loading, the ferric ions were reduced in the organic phase using metallic zinc. The ferrous ions produced could be easily stripped into a sulfate solution with pH values in the range of 1.4 to 2.0. The small, laboratory scale pilot system used in this study allowed for continuous cycling of the organic and strip aqueous solutions. It was possible to establish and evaluate a series of steady state conditions under selected operating paiameters. The effects of processing parameters such as solution chemistry, flow rates, zinc metal loading and pH on iron recovery and efficiency were also evaluated. Under proper conditions, it was possible to remove about 5 g/L iron from the organic phase in one stage and to produce a concentrated iron sulfate strip solution containing ferrous ion concentrations in the range of 90 to 130 g/L. Preliminary feasibility tests were also made on electrowinning metallic iron from the strip solutions and crystallizing ferrous sulfate as a means of making a marketable iron product.

Develop a user-friendly, personal computer-based numerical modeling program that performs structural analyses of underground tabular deposits, making these readily available to the mining industry. Background When ore is extracted from an underground mine, the overburden weight is redistributed to unmined areas, recompacted gob zones, and artificial structures such as packwalls and/or cribs. This redistribution of stresses continually changes throughout the mining cycle and can be especially complicated when multiple-seam mining is involved. Numerical mine structural analysis methods provide a way of calculating the redistribution of overburden stresses and the resulting loading for any given area of an underground mine, thus enabling engineers to design safer and more productive mines. In 1973 Crouch and Fairhurst developed a mine structural analysis computer program called MINSIM. This computer program was based on the three-dimensional displacement-discontinuity approach, a subvariation of the boundary-element method. In 1979 Sinha expanded MINSIM's capability to provide an analysis of parallel multiple seams. Sinha called his program MULSIM. During 1984 and 1985, the Bureau of Mines upgraded and completely restructured MULSIM into what is now called MULSIM/BM.

To develop a simple device for rapidly determining the shearing strength and angle of Internal friction of coal and rock in situ. Approach Use a portable, permissible, hydraulically operated device in boreholes as deep as 100 feet into the rib, floor, or roof of the mine. How it Works The device, called a Borehole Shear Strength Tester (BST), is inserted Into a 3-inch-diameter borehole to the desired depth, locked Into position, and activated to shear the rock or coal in the borehole walls. The normal and shear pressures exerted by the BST, which are recorded during the test, are used to calculate the shearing strength and the angle of internal friction. The BST consists of 3 main components and several minor components. Main components are: ? A shear head with 2 shear plates that bite into the rock when normal pressure is applied. ? A hollow hydraulic jack with RW drill rods that pull the shear head when shear pressure is applied. ? A console with a hand pump and two hydraulic gages to activate the device and to indicate the pressures that apply the normal and shear faces to the shearing plates.

"Filter cloth in the mining industry is an ambiguous title asthis suggests filter cloth use from underground ventilation to the refining processes. The time allowed for this paper would be better served in con-centrating on vacuum filters common to all mine mills and to offer some simple guide lines to the mill metallurgists in the choice of filter cloth for this type of filter.The requirement of the filter cloth is to separate solids from liquids under a vacuum head by forming a permeable layer of solids or cake, through which liquids can flow until the panel or disc sector leave the slurry tank and to continue to pass residual moisture from the cake formed during the cake drying cycle, and to discharge the cake on air-blow so that the cycle can be repeated.Whilst the mill metallurgist should not be expected to under¬stand all aspects of filter cloth manufacturer, it is however, advantageous for him to understand a little of the textile language associated with filter cloth for his own protection against ""trial-and-error"" methods, which are both time consuming and costly.If improvements are to be made over existing filter cloth in use an examination of the limiting factors of the cloth used should be made and the major causes for removal determined, e.g. cloth blinding, high moisture in cake, poor cake discharge on air blow, mechanical damage to cloth.As each of the limiting factors mentioned has a bearing on the choice of fibre used, the yarn type and weave of a suitable cloth, an under-standing of these points will assist the mill metallurgist in avoiding repetitive trials offering little degree of success."

This paper describes the tower foundation design and construction experience for the 345kV Youngheung marine transmission line, which has been in commercial operation in Korea since July, 2004. This transmission line was designed and constructed to meet the rapidly increasing power demands of metropolitan areas and supply stable, bulk electric power from the Yonghung thermal power plant into metropolitan areas. This transmission line passes over the west sea, Lake Sihwa and over land. In order to successfully complete this project, and to safely support the tower during severe maritime conditions, several types of tower foundation such as Pad and Chimney foundation, Pier (Cylindrical) foundation, R.C.D foundation, Jacket pile foundation and Steel pipe pile + concrete mat foundation were developed and used. As the world?s first and longest marine transmission line, the 345kV Yonghung marine transmission line operates successfully, thanks to several high-tech civil engineering technologies and KEPCO?s accumulated experience.

Occupational exposure to whole body vibration has long been associated with increased incidence of low back pain and low back injuries1. A number of studies have investigated transmissibility of seat pan vibration 5, 6. While transmissibility has been well researched, the mechanism by which vibration may induce injury has not been thoroughly studied. Winter et al. identified increased reflex response delay after vibration exposure and speculated that muscular fatigue may be the cause of this increase9. However, a mechanism has yet to be demonstrated completely. A potential mechanism that may explain the increased risk is neuromotor habituation. Muscle spindle organs have been shown in the extremities to be sensitive to muscle and tendon vibration. Rapid length changes in muscle have been shown to result in kinesthetic illusions as the regular firing of the muscle spindles is interpreted as muscle lengthening4, 7. These illusions have also been demonstrated in the paraspinal musculature2. With removal of vibration, research in the extremities has demonstrated increased positioning errors, probably due to neuromotor habituation8. In this research, it has been hypothesized that neuromotor habituation after exposure to occupational vibration will increase positioning errors. It is further hypothesized that these errors can be shown to be linked to increased reflex response time. Such increased reflex response time could, in turn, decrease spinal stability and increase low back injury risk. Methods Both positioning error and sudden load response were measured before and after exposure to 20 minutes of 5 Hz, 0.223 m/s2 RMS seat pan vibration. Subjects were asked to sit on an unpadded seat without a backrest. Throughout the whole body vibration period, subjects were instructed to put their hands on a stable hand rest and feet on an adjustable stable footrest. The subjects were instructed to assume a comfortable and relax sitting posture for the duration of the exposure. Positioning error was measured using an active-active reposition sense protocol. Electromagnetic markers (Motionstar, Ascension Tech, Burlington, VT) were used to track trunk motion. With markers attached to the skin at the T10 vertebra, the S1 vertebra and manubrium, trunk flexion (the angle from vertical of the line connecting T10 and S1) and lumbar curvature (the difference in inclination of the T10 and S1 markers) were tracked. In the reposition sense protocol, subjects were asked to maintain an upright trunk flexion and to rotate their pelvis and lumbar curvature to assume a target lumbar curvature. In the protocol subjects completed training trials, where they were asked to match their lumbar curvature using a visual display, and assessment trials, where they were asked to reproduce the lumbar curvature from memory. After two initial training trials, training trials and assessment trials were alternated for a total of 3 assessment trials. Reposition error was defined as the absolute difference between the target lumbar curvature and the lumbar curvature the subject assumed during the assessment trials.

The comminution laws The grindability of the ores or minerals is an important factor that could not be deduced from their mineralogical characteristics (Testut, 1958). Many theories have been proposed to determine the amount of work required in a comminution operation as a function of the nature of material, size and shape of the minerals before and after of comminution. The most important laws are proposed by Rittinger, Kick and Bond. According to Rittinger (1867), the work is directly proportional to the new surfaces produced during the comminution. Kick (1885) believes that the work needed to produce similar modification is proportional to the volume or mass of the material. Bond, during his 25 years of experience and research, reached to the conclusion that on the average the energy required for a known comminution is between the Rittinger's and Kick's laws (Bond, 1952). According to Bond's Third Theory, the work input is proportional to the new crack tip length produced during the particle breakage, and equals the work represented by the product minus that represented by the feed. The work input is given by the following equation: [111W = 1 Owi( FP FF(1)] where W is the The energy input to the mill, (kWh/st); F is the Feed size based on 80% passed, (µm); P is the Product size based on 80% passed, (µm); and W; is the Work Index, (kWh/st) Methods to determine the Bond Work Index Various methods have been proposed by Bond to determine the Work Index. There are some problems with the Standard Bond Grindability Test: •Requiring a special mill. •Requiring a relatively large amount of sample. •Being relatively time consuming and tedious. [ ] During the recent years, numerous attempts have been made to install faster and easier methods to determine the Work Index. A complete description of these methods is presented by Yap et al. (1982). Determining the Bond Work Index by a new size ball mill During the recent years, researchers at the University of Tehran determined the Bond Work Index, using the Anaconda simplified methods by its Denver 305- x 127-mm (12 x 5-in.) laboratory wet ball mill. The equation used to calculate the Work Index for the above mill containing 16.12 kg (35.5 lbs) of steel balls is as follow: [1 _ 1-1W;=0.54x [P [)(2)] In addition, an attempt has been made to determine the Bond Work Index similar to standard Bond ball mill procedure but by a different ball mill, smaller and in consequent portable and less laborious than the Bond ball mill. Method description Just as the standard Bond grindability test, this method is a locked-cycle dry grinding and screening process that is carried out until steady state condition is reached. Test equipment The test is conducted in a special ball mill, called the New Size Ball Mill (NSBM). The mill is scaled down with a coefficient of two-thirds from the standard Bond ball mill. Overexposure to noise remains a widespread and serious health hazard in the U.S. service providing and goods producing industries. Excessive noise can lead to poor verbal communication and reduce the ability to recognize warning signals. These dangerous work conditions can also cause stress and fatigue. Occupational hearing loss is a permanent illness, with no recovery currently possible. Method: National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recognized Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) as one of the ten leading work related diseases and injuries in the United States, and has emphasized its importance as one of the critical areas expressed in the National Occupational Research Agenda. Results: One of the most serious noise problems in the goods producing industries is the operation of continuous mining machines during underground coal mining. In order to minimize occupational hearing loss, noise hazards are “designed out” early in the design process. NIOSH is leading a national initiative called Prevention through Design (PTD) to promote this concept. This paper describes the quiet by design approach of a noise control that reduced noise exposures of continuous mining machine operators by 3dB(A) using the four functional areas of PTD, namely Practice, Policy, Research, and Education.

This report and associated deliverables is the culmination of a comprehensive literature survey, data collection and identification of over 500 metal/nonmetal active mines/mills/smelters (over 50,000 tons per year, TPY, production) in the contiguous 48 states. The main purpose was to compile an inventory of the mine/ mill/smelter waste tonnages, thus forming a data base for future research and development in improving waste management and waste disposal techniques in the metal/nonmetal mining industry. The study specifically excluded sand and gravel, sulfur, granite and any commodity that leaves basically no waste when mined and/or milled. The coal waste inventory is the subject of another report. The study provided for locating, mapping. encodating and digitizing all the mine/mill/smelter information made available throughout the nation as well as the climatological, land use, topographical, ecological and vegetative data. Mine/mill/smelter information also included (where possible) acreage and/or volume, mining methods, primary ore and gangue minerals, waste composition and haulage methods and distance hauled. Finally, a discussion is provided concerning present and potential uses of various types of tailings, as well 8S recommending possible R&D in addressing problem areas in waste disposal techniques and management.

The Oyu Tolgoi porphyry gold and copper project is located in the south Gobi region of Mongolia. The Ivanhoe Mines project has the potential to become a long-life copper and gold producer that could rank among the largest in the world. There are five deposits which cover a strike length in excess of 6.5 km, from south to north they are named South Oyu, Southwest Oyu, Central Oyu, Hugo South and Hugo North. The first three, collectively known as the Southern Oyu deposits, are planned to be mined by open pits, whilst extraction of the deeper Hugo deposits is planned using block caving techniques. The pits will have diameters of approximately 1000m and a maximum depth of 550m. The geological environment consists of a sequence of porphyritic augite basalt, dacitic tuffs and sedimentary rocks that have been intruded by several generations of porphyritic quartz monzodiorite and numerous post mineralization dykes. Several major faults cut through the southern deposits juxtaposing the relative position of the stratigraphy. The geotechnical investigation for the Oyu Tolgoi Open Pits was conducted in three distinct phases of increasing complexity: scoping study; advanced scoping study and feasibility study. Each phase consisted of data collection, interpretation and analysis designed to progressively develop 3D geotechnical domaining for the empirical, structural and numerical evaluations. The development of the geotechnical design parameters for these green fields open pits posed many technical challenges, brought about by the conditions associated with a lithologically and structurally complex environment. The design work focused on the optimization of the pit geometry to conform to equipment selection and blasting characteristics. Limiting bench stack heights were derived from the influence of major structures. The overall slope angles in each pit sector were developed around the requirement for haulage ramps and geotechnical berms. This paper describes each of these aspects and the methodology used to address the integration of the geotechnical characteristics with the mining environment.

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) endeavors to provide national and world leadership in the prevention of work-related illness, injury, and death. This is accomplished by using a scientific approach to gather information, assemble and create knowledge, then translate the knowledge and results into products and services. These products and services are then delivered to all personnel who can effect prevention. Obviously, the development and use of instruments to monitor mine roof conditions provides an opportunity to execute that mission. In the late 1990’s, based on observations at a number of underground limestone mines, only a few used roof monitors. Subsequently, NIOSH introduced the Roof Monitoring Safety System (RMSS) as an aid to roof inspection beyond traditional visual and sounding techniques. Initial expectations were that by gaining roof movement information, ultimately roof sag rates could provide indications of eventual failure. During this investigation, RMSSs were installed in 13 underground limestone mines in six states and this paper analyzes the data obtained at three of these mines. This paper also provides an overview of the system, data, analysis, and applications relevant to the RMSS.

Multi-use pad operators require an efficient and economic method to destroy cyanide in their process residues so new material can be stored on the pad and leached. Operators of the dedicated or single-use pads require an effective cyanide destruction method for pad closure. Cyanide destruction can be accomplished by utilizing oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide or calcium hypochlorite, or by utilizing ferrous sulfate which sequesters the cyanide in strong acid dissociable complex. Ferrous sulfate can be the preferred method of cyanide destruction because it is a less costly chemical, reaction rates are almost immediate and unlike oxidants, it can penetrate the total depth of a pile without being destroyed by side reactions. Literature indicates that the (Fe(CN)6)-4 com~lex is produced slowly but it appears that complexes such as Fe(CN)4(H20)2-or Fe(CN)4(OH)2)-4, are formed quickly and should have no U.V. sensitifity, unlike (Fe(CN)6)-4. Stoichiometry of the testwork indicates that Fe«CN)4(OH)2)-4 complex may be the species formed. The usage of ferrous sulfate has the advantage of being able to bring ~ level down that divalent metal ions such as Cu++, Cd++, Hg++, Pb++ and Zn will form insoluble complexes and precipitate from solutions does not destroy weak acid dissolvable complexes and can leave a heavy metal problem behind after cyanide destruction.

The range of gold ores tested at AMMTEC LTD over several years has resulted in the requirement to analyse for the mode of occurrence of gold in order to assist selection of ore processing options. The aim of this paper is to describe the laboratory testwork and analytical procedures which have been of benefit in detail­ing the mode of occurrence and mineral associations of gold and hence being of value in developing an optimised ore processing route. The range of ore and mineral assemblages described include relatively simple pyrite and free milling ores, more complex pyrite plus arsenopyrite gold ores and the quite com­plex associations of gold in copper bearing ores or with car­bonaceous mixed sulphide ore assemblages. The aim of this paper is to describe the laboratory testwork and analytical procedures which have been of benefit in detail­ing the mode of occurrence and mineral associations of gold and hence being of value in developing an optimised ore processing route. SALKOVITZ1 has given a number of useful angles between planes for use with the Laue method in determining the orientation of bismuth single crystals. Bismuth is usually considered as having a face-centered-rhombohedra1 structure with its axial angle 87°34', Fig. 1. A similar figure given by Sal-kovitz appears to be in error in that the angle there marked as 87°34' should be 92°26. The primitive cell is a single rhombohedron of axial angle 570 14. The structure is almost face-centered-cubic and hence high accuracy in measurements is essential if there is to be no confusion in indexing poles or zone axes. It is easier to get this accuracy if zone axes are plotted on the stereogram because they will lie near the basic circle where the net has a more open scale. The zone axes can be read from the film, using a Greninger chart, and can be plotted more accurately than poles. Also, the angles between points near the basic circle can be read more accurately than those between poles near the center. In spite of the wide use of lead compounds to enhance cyanidation of free milling sulphide-bearing gold ores, an industrial control method was only implemented four years ago. This study presents the results of the investigation that led to the development of the on-line control technology. Two free milling sulphide-bearing gold ores and high purity minerals were used to develop and test the concept. The first ore contains 2.8 g/t Au, 6.2% pyrrhotite, 2.1% pyrite 0.6 % arsenopyrite, 0.1% chalcopyrite and 0.1% organic carbon. The second ore contains 10.4 g/t Au, 3.2% pyrite, 0.8% pyrrhotite and 0.38% chalcopyrite. The first ore showed a much higher oxidation rate in the pre-leach than the second one and consumed seven times more cyanide. A relation between the formation of thiosulphate and thiocyanate and the additions of lead nitrate were quantified. The ?reducing power?, a titration with permanganate, predominantly determines the concentration of thiosulphate and thiocyanate in cyanide solution. The relation between the reducing power and the addition of lead nitrate at various concentrations of pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite in the ores was established, providing a monitor/control strategy for lead nitrate addition.

The twelve latexes listed in Table XI penetrated A horizon soil as shown by elution through a laboratory soil column and gave good sealing efficiency. See details in Table XII. High elution through laboratory soil columns of 4 to 6 inches depth is desirable because it predicts penetration of latex to a greater depth in the field. No definite correlation was evident between penetrating ability and particle size, surface tension, or pH. Most of the materials, however, were characterized by low surface tensions in the 36 to 53 dynes/cm range while particle sizes were usually in the intermediate range of about 1500 to 2500 Å. Naugatex J-3471 (a highly crosslinked styrene-butadiene copolymer) was the most promising of this group for stability, penetrating ability; and sealant efficiency. It also showed utility with [B] profile soil. Many of the other latexes tested in this investigation showed good sealing efficiency but were judged unsatisfactory because they gave low penetration or formed surface films with & horizon top soil. In general, latexes containing cationic surfactants were not satisfactory because they formed a heavy surface film. This is due to neutralization of the positive latex charge by the negatively charged soil particles.

Surf ace subsidence is rapidly becoming an important environmental consideration of active as well as abandoned mining operations. The damages attributed to this phenomenon have been witnessed in both rural and urban areas and include land settlement and fracturing, structural damages to surface buildings or facilities and disruption or contamination of ground water supplies. The problem of mining subsidence has gained considerable emphasis in the Appalachian coalfield. The increased mining activity over the past few years and the particular topographic conditions, lithologic and structural environment, mining methods and hydrological patterns are all factors which have contributed to specific subsidence characteristics in this region. The objective of this paper is to discuss and review the most widely accepted methods of subsidence prediction above longwall as well as partial extraction systems in Appalachia. These include an accurate and easy to apply empirical method, which has been developed entirely from field information pertaining to the Appalachian coalfield and incorporates both geometrical and geological information of the panel in question. The second method is a development of influence functions and is founded on the zone area approach. Both methods, originally derived for longwall mining, have been expanded to include room and pillar applications and have been widely used by the mining industry in the Appalachian coalfield.

With reference to the test report carried out by Guangzhou Nonferrous Metal Research Institute in 1983, the mineral process flow sheet of Yichun Tantalum-niobium mine is determined based on the characters of ores and successful experiences in light of the problems in the existing flowsheet: The ore is desilted before crushing; the primary slime is separately treated; the staged grinding process used while the fine slime is collectedly treated with tantalum and niobium as the main recoveries and lepidolite and feldspar powder as the secondary. The flowsheet is featured by comprehensive recovery, low investment and low energy cost.

The composition of ferrous calcium silicate slag is located on the tie line between FeOx and calcium silicates in ternary FeOx-SiO2-CaO system. This slag has never been used as copper smelting slag because of high sulfidic copper solubility. However, when the dissolved copper in slag is just oxidic, as in direct white metal production or in converting process, this slag is quite attractive and can be regarded as the third copper smelting slag after fayalite and calcium ferrite slags. Based on the authors' studies on phase separation thermodynamics and laboratory experiments, it was clarified that the oxidic copper loss in this ferrous calcium silicate slag become the minimum not only %Cu in slag but also the total copper loss when the amount of slag is taken into account. It has been proven that calcium ferrite slag is suitable for continuous converting where the dissolved copper is oxidic, but there exist some drawbacks such as limited solubility of silica, low lead removability and too high fluidity. To overcome these difficulties accompanying traditional slags, ferrous calcium silicate slag is the hopeful alternative. In view of the general trends of modem copper smelting processes, the interesting features of this new slag system are discussed.

Canadian junior mining companies whose gold exploration and exploitation programs take them across the border into the western United States should be prepared to deal with the myriad of title issues involved in acquiring unpatented gold mining claims. The purpose of this paper is to serve as an introductory outline for Canadian junior mining companies to mining laws of the United States, as well as to relevant laws of some of the western gold mining states. Topics will include the five w's (who, where, what, why and when) of Canadian junior mining companies1 rights and responsibilities in acquiring interests in U.S. gold mining properties by claim staking, lease or purchase. Historic terms of common parlance among U.S. miners, such as "claimjumping" are defined and discussed. Various legal doctrines, such as "pedis possessio" and "good faith" in the location of claims are covered as well. Controversial subjects of contemporary interest are addressed in some detail, such as whether to locate a bulk-mineable disseminated gold deposit with placer claims or lode claims, and whether lodes may be staked over placers. By thus heightening the awareness of Canadian junior mining companies, it is hoped that they can be properly prepared to avoid title disputes, and to win lawsuits when they are unavoidable.
