ONE of the well-known and important uses of the noble or precious metals has been for electrical contacts. In fact, the elements of this group, comprising gold, silver and the six platinum metals, have been called "noble" because of their ability to resist heat and corrosion, properties which were early found to be of importance in good contacts. Of these, platinum and its iridium alloys, palladium, and silver, have been extensively used. In recent years the electrical industry has been responsible for about one-eighth of the total consumption of the platinum metals in the United States. Information is not available as to what part of this one-eighth has been used for contacts but it is certainly an important one. SUBSTITUTES FOR PLATINUM During the past 20 years a considerable number of contact alloys have been proposed in the patent literature largely with the aim of more or less replacing platinum by gold or silver, and some of these alloys are finding increasingly widespread application as the reliability of their performance becomes established. From even the partial data-at hand it appears that this substitution by the less precious metals has replaced at least one-half of the amount of platinum that the entire electrical industry would otherwise be consuming at the present time. While the subject is of considerable interest to the metallurgist it is , even more so to the electrical engineer and it is surprising that the literature records no systematic and comprehensive investigation along these lines. Practically all the scattered work on noble metal contacts has centered around platinum as a Standard and has had two more or less distinct aims. One of these has been the replacement of platinum by cheaper materials, and the other, the development of materials of superior electrical performance. The merit of a contact metal has been assumed to be dependent on its infusibility, and since the more precious metals have the higher melting points there has naturally been an association of the two qualities in the sense that the more precious were

The purpose of this paper is to state briefly the inspection requirements of the Bureau of Ordnance, the specifications governing the inspection, and the physical and chemical properties of the steel used in the construction of ordnance for our Navy. It would be of interest to evoke discussion on points in these specifications which do not tend to insure the production of the very best material for the purpose intended. In other words, what requirements of our specifications are useless and also in what manner are our specifications deficient? It might be well at the start to answer the first criticism of this paper which will probably be made, and that is that the title does not agree with the subject matter. Considering metallographic work as covering only the macroscopic and microscopic examination of metals, this paper will have gone beyond the subject; but it is believed that a broader definition of metallography is that it is the study of the relation of the internal structure of metals and alloys to their composition and to their physical and other properties. The internal structure of steel is dependent on its physical and its chemical properties. These physical properties are dependent on the chemical composition and the mechanical and thermal treatment of the steel. So it seems that this subtitle would not be entirely necessary and that the title " Metallography of Steel for Ordnance Purposes" would cover a study, not only of what we can learn of macroscopic and microscopic examination, but broadly of the whole subject of the specifications, the fulfillment of the requirements of which produce the structural conditions revealed by macroscopic and microscopic examination. I will refer but briefly at the beginning to the microscope and its uses in our inspection. It is only very recently that the Bureau of Ordnancc has furnished certain of its inspection offices with a portable Tassin outfit for the microscopic examination of steel. Since that

A numerical formulation of bigh-order accuracy, based on variational methods, is proposed for the solution of multidimensional diffusion-convection-type equations. Accurate solutions are obtained without the difficulties that standard finite difference approximations present. In addition, tests show that accurate solutions of a one-dimensional problem can be obtained in the neighborhood of a sharp front without the need for a large number of calculations for the entire region of interest. Results using these variational methods are compared with several standard finite difference approximations and with a technique based on the method of characteristics. The variational methods are shown to yield higher accuracies in less computer time. Finally, it is indicated how one can use these attractive features of the variational methods for solving miscible displacement problems in two dimensions. INTRODUCTION The problem of finding suitable numerical approximations for equations describing the transport of heat or mass by diffusion and convection simultaneously has been of interest for some time. Equations of this type, which will be called diffusionconvection equations, arise in describing many diverse physical processes. Of particular interest here is the equation describing the process by which one miscible liquid displaces another liquid in a one-dimensional porous medium. Mining companies often have many disparate systems and repositories of data in their organization for planning and scheduling outbound mining supply chains. To optimize ore quality, throughput, transport logistics scheduling and delivery to contract, planning teams need to model and manage the value chain accurately and achieve a consolidated, enterprise view of operational performance. Planning teams coordinate a complex series of activities to ensure production forecast accuracy. They also negotiate and execute complex contracts often with disconnected and limited visibility of production forecasts, quality, and variability with little ability to accurately market potential product specifications over longer time horizons. This market is becoming increasingly dynamic, with increasing variability and the time for planning teams to react is decreasing. This is driving the need towards using science to generate the necessary scenarios required to support the decisions made by planners on a frequent basis. Resource-to-Market is a highly flexible, user-configurable supply chain management system for the mining and metal processing industries. This provides an integrated view of the supply chain that supports the dynamic nature of planning in a mining company, embraces variability of elements across the supply chain with the ability to optimize across all the functional areas of the operation to enable optimal decision making for often competing objectives such as throughput, quality, cost, revenue and profit.

The objective of this paper is to back-analyze the August 6th ,2007 collapse at the Crandall Canyon Mine in order to better understand the geometric and geo- mechanical factors which contributed to that collapse. In this work, the LaModel boundary-element program along with the best available information is used for the back- analysis. To initiate the analysis, a six step base model of the mining in he Main West area was developed. This base model included a step for each of the critical stages in the mining of this area. Next, calibrated values for the critical input parameters: rock mass stiffness, gob stiffness and coal strength, were developed and optimized based on the best available information. Finally, the model was used to simulate the final mining scenario. As a result of this back analysis , a number of conclusions can be made concerning the mine design and the August 6th collapse: 1) Overall, the area was primed for a massive pillar collapse because of the large area of equal size pillars, 2) The abutment stress from the active retreat sections and the adjacent longwall panels were significant contributors to the collapse, 3) From the modeling alone, it is not clear exactly what triggered the August collapse, although the active mining is a reasonable assumption.

A new minerals initiative to increase the level of understanding of New Zealand's mineral resources and to promote the development of minerals began earlier in the year in a partnership pilot-project between Crown Minerals and the Institute for Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS). The project aims to gather a set of comprehensive geoscientific data and build a series of digital GIS packages to highlight New Zealand's mineral prospectivity. The pilot study was carried out at a regional scale, and is focussed on mesothermal gold mineralisation in the South Island. A significant amount of geological data and information was sourced from open file technical reports held by Crown Minerals and from various databases held by GNS and has now been compiled into a single GIS dataset, which will soon be made freely available to interested parties. In addition to this comprehensive data compilation, prospectivity modelling using Weights of Evidence techniques was undertaken to highlight those areas likely to contain ore deposits. It is clear from this study that the South Island of New Zealand remains highly prospective for mesothermal gold mineralisation. Many of the highly prospective areas, which also contain historic mine workings, remain open for exploration. The study not only highlights these areas, but also other areas where the potential for similar mineralisation exists, in all likelihood with no surface expression. The study has also highlighted the value of many of the open-file technical reports held by Crown Minerals and the need to carry out additional studies using this and other available data at a more detailed level, possibly as the basis for a web-based minerals information system.

In June, 1965, Sanderson and scully5 reported at the Conference on Environment Sensitive Mechanical Properties of Materials at the Research Institute for Advanced Studies at Baltimore that thin foils of titanium could be prepared by chemical polishing in a mixture of 44 pct HF and 73 pct HNO3 in the volumetric ratio 2:3. The technique is simpler than that since reported by Rice and Orava. As-received annealed titanium (containing 0.8 pct Fe and 30 ppm H) in the form of sheet 0.05 cm thick is placed in the solution and moved up and down. The reaction is violent but suitable foils are obtained very easily and consistently. A typical micrograph is shown in Fig. 3. The small precipitates were not identified. Yamane and ueda6 observed many spotlike features which they referred to as small dislocation loops. While their spots may be due to the reaction of the warm foil with the air as suggested by Rice and Orava, the precipitates in Fig. 3 are also found when foils of titanium are prepared by electro-polishing at low temperatures and subsequently examined in the electron microscope without any inter- mediate warming. Furthermore, they are not a surface effect. It is necessary to add that alloys of titanium cannot be so easily thinned by the chemical polishing solution described above since it contaminates the a, phase with hydrogen and produces y hydride. These matters are described at length in a paper7 and their relevance to stress corrosion is considered elsewhere.'-* Author's Reply The authors are grateful to Dr. Scully for bringing to our attention his hitherto unpublished technique for thinning unalloyed titanium, and deeply regret the unintended apparent duplication. The chemical thinning solution (7 parts HNO3 and 3 parts HF, by volume) reported by us is the same as that with which, for some period in the past, we had experienced success in the preparation of foils from single and polycrystalline niobium. Its subsequent effective application to titanium was a logical step, which, clearly independently of Scully, was conceived by Mr. Rice, to whom full credit is due. A few comments are warranted concerning some of the details of the preceding Discussion. It is evident to the discerning reader that the two thinning techniques under consideration are chemically almost identical, and in that sense are equally "simple". The chemical aspect is, of course, the one of primary importance in both communications. Thereafter, the relative simplicity is dictated by the mechanics of the actual thinning operation selected by the individual investigator. Our standard dimpling, or dishing, procedure was chosen with a view toward providing, for the electron transparent areas of the sample, the maximum protection from extraneous deformation during handling. That the long, straight dislocations visible in Scully's electron micrograph of a seemingly recovered structure closely resemble handling dislocations would tend to indicate the merit of our adopted technique. Features similar to those which Scully has attributed to precipitates, without any apparent diffraction contrast confirmation, were not observed in any of our clean foils taken from annealed or deformed specimens. This was admittedly somewhat surprising since the 3700 ppm (nominal) Fe in the A-70 commercial-grade titanium examined should have given rise to TiFe precipitates. Presumably these existed but were un-resolvable. Curiously, Scully's "precipitate1' density is fairly high although the iron content quoted was less than one-fourth of that in our material. One is forced to conclude from the evidence that prior thermal and mechanical treatments are responsible for the two different types of structure observed.

Introduction Borne out of the need for reductions in capital expenditure and increased production, several new and innovative carbon systems have been developed for small precious metal heap leach operations throughout the United States. Perhaps the most important aspect of these systems is the carbon column. Though diverse in design, these columns can be categorized into three basic types. The first is known as the gravity flow type or Cortez type. As the name indicates, solution flows via gravity, throughout 4 to 6 columns which are arranged in a normally stepped con- figuration which is conventionally upflow in design. The second type, known as the vertical column, is an arrangement whereby flow is established through pressurization in an upward manner, throughout 4 to 6 columns in a vertically stacked configuration. This arrangement is typically intended for use with small portable heap leach operations and employs a semi-continuous mode thus preventing gravity from occurring. The third type and newest development in carbon columns is an arrangement whereby the solution flows throughout 4 to 6 columns placed in a side by side configuration and pressurized by a single feed pump (Figure 1). A unique aspect to the third type, is that the adsorb and desorb cycles are accomplished in the same column, due to a fixed carbon charge. An in-depth analysis is warranted due to numerous advantages of this arrangement, and is therefore the subject of this paper. Advantages and Variations One advantage to the third type of carbon column is the fact that initial capital expenditures and operating man- power requirements are reduced. Another advantage is that the system can be made fully portable up to a 0.0315 m3/s (500 gpm) capacity. Systems of this nature are operational at several sites. Above this flow rate, the system's portability is one which can be maintained, but disadvantages (i.e. larger diameter carbon column and greater weights) far outweigh the advantages. There are several variations in each of these systems which allow for unique operation. For example, carbon columns made highly portable, can be moved from unitized heap leach operations to central stripping facilities. Although this method has been used in Colorado, transportation of these units has been known to be quite cumbersome. If distances exceed 5 km (3.2 miles) then special front-end loaders are required. This limits heap locations to within 5 km (3.2 miles) of the central processing facility. Another example transports the carbon charge from the heap leach locations to a centralized processing facility; this method is quite effective. For the past 5 years one mine has employed this technique of transporting carbon in 907 kg (1 ton lots), in DOT containers, towed by company pick-ups. This operation uses a vertical column with a 907 kg (1 ton) carbon charge. A third example uses static carbon columns with fixed carbon charges. Carbon Adsorption System The carbon adsorption system (Figure 1) is fed by a single preg solution feed pump. This feed pump pushes the preg solution through all four to six fixed charged carbon columns, which are on line. The sequencing of the carbon columns is achieved using valves. Expansion of the carbon charge is dependent upon the carbon selected. The carbon typically used is a 6 x 12 mesh size, with a nominal flow rate of 0.00135 - 0.00138 m 3/s (22-25 gpm) per square foot of carbon, based on a 40% bed expansion. With 8 x 16 mesh size,

MINE operators today are paying increased attention to the mechanization of drilling operations as an important factor in increasing efficiency and decreasing costs. Recent progress in the design of drill jibs for mounting on drill carriages, or jumbos, has done much to advance the mechanization of mining methods. This progress has introduced new opportunities in the application of "jib jumbos" that are worth serious consideration. An attempt will be made here to classify the various types of jumbos and drill mountings available for level development and flat stope work, t6 indicate applications, and to measure their effectiveness in relation to their cost. The data here are based on a wide variety of field usage, and are offered only to point up, in a general way, the relative efficiency in proportion to cost. It should be remembered that any contemplated jumbo installation must be studied to determine what type of installation is most suitable, considering ground conditions, loading, timbering and haulage equipment, service available, and attitude of manpower. Early Drill Carriages: The advantages of some sort of a drill carriage were recognized at the time rock drills were introduced. In drift or heading operations where a fairly standard drill round and cross section were anticipated, as well as in flat bedded deposits where standard slabbing rounds were used, track and crawler-mounted drills found an early application. These first drill jumbos were little more than drill carriers, designed locally and manufactured with materials at hand. Of comparatively simple construction, function, and low capital cost, they usually consisted of a hinged column which supported one or more drills on arms or universal bars. When the column was pivoted vertically, the drills were moved into position. Screw jack extensions reached from the column to the roof and floor to hold the drill rigid. In some cases, particularly in tunnel jumbos, enough weight was carried that rail clamps or roof jacks were sufficient. Many of these column and arm-type jumbos, usually equipped with air and water manifolds, steel racks, and staging for drillers, are still in use today. Some have employed air or hydraulic extensions for securing the columns. They offer the equip-saving advantage of having all the necessary out, ment together, and they un be moved i and t. set up and torn down as a unit. Boom-type Jumbos: When the advantages of to column-type jumbo were seen, operators could to realize the further gains possible. More time could be saved with mechanical assistance to position api drill vertically. A rack on the column and a pinion on the arm for raising and lowering the drill in the manner of a quarry bar were tried with some success. The most outstanding solution to the vertical handling problem was reached with the boom-type of jumbo. Here two or more machines were mounted on a cross arm at the end of a boom that was pivoted at the rear of the track. This was raised and lowered by various mechanical aids. Occasionally air or hydraulic power was used. Nearly all of today's wagon drills use this boom-type principle. Boom jumbos represent a savings in time and physical effort expended in raising and lowering the drills. The boom must be balanced by the roof of the truck which is secured by rail clamps or type jacks. "Abstract An extensive pre-production static and dynamic pile load testing program was conducted for a coal-fired power plant. The static load testing program included axial compression, uplift (tension), and lateral load tests. Three types of piles were tested: Monotube, closed-end pipe, and step-tapered. The load tests were used to (a) determine pile driveability characteristics for each pile, (b) verify pile load response behavior, and (c) provide data to support the selection of a cost-effective piled-foundation system for the plant. A recent publication (Clemente and Lewis, 2013) describes the compression load testing program, the interpretation of instrumentation measurement results, and pile selection criteria. This manuscript describes site subsurface and groundwater conditions and installation of probe piles for testing, focuses on the uplift and lateral load testing program, and provides a comparative interpretation of the load test results.INTRODUCTIONThe pre-production probe pile load testing program described here was conducted for a 202-megawatt, coal-fired power and steam generating (cogeneration) facility. A schematic layout of the main plant (power block area) is shown in Figure 1, which also includes the locations of clusters of preproduction probe piles and boreholes drilled near these clusters.The load testing program included 24 pre-production probe piles driven throughout the power block area. The probe piles were driven at locations T-1 through T-8, shown in Figure 1. Three types of piles were driven at each location: Monotube pile; closed end, straight shaft pipe pile; and step-tapered pile. At each location, the three piles were driven in a row with the pipe pile at the center, and the center-tocenter spacing between piles was equal to about 1.5 m (> 3.5 pile diameters for the largest pile). No pile cap was used to connect the three piles, and the three piles driven at locations T-1 through T-8 will be referred to as pile clusters. A complete suite of static load testing (compression, tension, and lateral) was performed on each individual pile at Cluster T-2 and on the step-tapered piles only at Cluster T-8, shown in Figure 1.Clemente and Lewis (2013) provide details of the compression load testing program, the interpretation of instrumentation measurement results, and pile selection criteria. This manuscript focuses on the uplift (tension) and lateral load testing program. A brief summary of the site geology and existing subsurface and groundwater conditions in the vicinity of the test pile clusters is presented, with emphasis on T-2 and T-8. Probe pile driving results at T-2 and T-8 are also presented. Descriptions of the static uplift and lateral load test program at T-2 and T-8 are given along with a comparative evaluation of the load test results."

Previous applications for using waste rock for backfilling in South African gold mines were reviewed and it was found that in many cases the mechanical equipment selected and the design philosophy applied did not meet the requirements. A more simplified system configuration is proposed, which allows the equipment to be relocated as mining progresses. Innovative high-intensity grinding and dense-phase pumping technology are proposed to provide a low-porosity backfill with a particle top size of 5 mm to 8 mm. According to recent rock mechanics modeling work, this comminuted waste backfill material can provide a good compromise between underground support characteristics and reliable hydraulic transportation behavior.

The determination of the surface area that may be impacted by underground mining is an important consideration in subsidence engineering. A number of parameters have been utilized to identify this influence area, most notably the angles of draw and break. This paper discusses the implications of selecting an appropriate "damage angle" for defining a potential damage area due to mining, within which surface structures may be impacted. Furthermore, the influence of both mining and geological factors (i.e., mining width, depth and overburden lithology) on this angle is examined using the Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS) software. Finally, recommendations are given for applying these concepts in subsidence control.

INTRODUCTION Forecasting of metal and mineral prices is a complex and hazardous undertaking. In order to accurately forecast prices, the complexities of both marketing and production must be modeled for each commodity. Even with the most detailed model, the economy may change unexpectedly, invalidating the forecast. Because of these factors, this chapter will not attempt to present specific methods for price estimation. It will, however, review the fundamentals of price forecasting as applied to planning and design of the final pit shell. Recognizing that no price estimate can be exact, sensitivity analysis will be reviewed as an approach to coping with these unknown variations.

This paper addresses the long-term cost and availability of primary gold production from the Republic of South Africa. Forty-four major producing or developing operations were evaluated. The analyses present estimates concerning 1) total refined gold potentially available from demonstrated resources, 2) annual production potential into the next century, 3) long-term weighted average total costs for underground mine production and surface waste reprocessing, 4) the expected annual decrease in gold production, and 5) the ability of other market economy countries to compensate for the anticipated decline in South African gold output. This paper draws upon the data and analyses of a recent Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, Minerals Availability Program appraisal that evaluated the worldwide availability of gold and silver from primary precious metal operations and as a byproduct of base metal production.

"The comminution energy curve is a profoundly simple graphical technique that displays detailed operating efficiency information for industrial comminution processes. The database underlying the methodology has recently more than doubled, to now contain a substantial fraction of the international comminution output (1.7 billion tonnes of rock per year) across more than 8 major commodities. This increase has deepened the analytical capabilities and effectiveness for assessing comminution circuit performance in relation to comparable operating mines. This paper will explore how the energy curve methodology can be used to examine the ability of stirred mill technologies to increase efficiency.Specifically, this paper explores how the energy curves methodology can be used to present energy efficiency gains achieved at three mines employing a stirred mill technology under different duties. The first of these cases studies was conducted by Rosa (2014) who compared the performance of two ball mills operating in parallel with a Vertimill in the regrinding circuit at the Samarco Iron project in South East Brazil. The Vertimill was found to achieve the same product specification while consuming 40% less energy. 1st. The fine iron ore is mixed with a sufficient proportion of fine coking coal, and is coked in any of the ordinary methods for making coke. The effect of this is to convert the iron oxide into sponge in such a shape that the usual trouble of oxidation is avoided. 2d. The resulting mixture of coke and sponge is melted down ill an ordinary cupola, the coke furnishing more than sufficient fuel for that purpose. I may briefly point out here that in the first place the iron is sponged, and this sponge, as is well known, contains no phosphoras or silicon when the reduction takes place at a low temperature; and in the second place this sponge is melted down in a cupola in which there is no zone of reduction for phosphorus or silicon, and that con . sequently the resulting iron should be free from both of these impurities. 3d. The liquid sponge, now carburized, is run into an open-hearth furnace, where the requisite degree of hardness or softness is obtained by adding some of the fine ore, and the usual dose of ferromanganese, I have merely given above the rough outlines of the prows, bat it is my intention, as early as possible, to bring the process more fully before the Institute.

INTRODUCTION In inclined sedimentary strata slope failure may occur by sliding along bedding and along a discontinuity or weak zone, as illustrated in Fig. 1. This mode of failure may be called 'bi-linear', as the failure surface is comprised of two linear or approximately linear segments. This type of failure has been suggested for the famous Frank Slide, Alberta, Canada (Cruder and Krahn, 1973) in which an estimated 90 M 5 tons (8.97 x 10 MN) of rock separated from Turtle Mountain and buried the town of Frank. Also, with the increasing depth of open pits and the construction of highways through inclined sedimentary strata this mode of failure is of major concern to the rock slope stability engineer. A computer program for calculating factors of safety for this slope failure mode is provided and includes the ability to vary shear strengths of potential slide surfaces, ground water elevations and wedge geometry. LIMITING EQUILIBRIUM MODEL The simple limiting equilibrium model used in the analysis is shown in Fig. 2. It is assumed that jointing is orthogonal to bed- ding and that the interface between the upper and lower wedges there- fore corresponds to a joint plane or planes.
