Study on Desulfurisation and Deashing for Medium-High Sulfur Coal Using Shaking Table As important coal resources, medium- high sulfur accounts for a significant part of the coal reserve in China. The environmental regulations and fuel standard requires sulfur and ash to be removed before it is used, so as to save energy and decrease the emission. Therefore, the effective desulfurisation and deashing technologies are urgent needed. However, due to the local characteristics of the coal, specific technology with optimum operation parameters is required to develop for different local coal. Qinglong is a district of Guizhou Province, which has large medium to high sulfur contained coal reserve. In this paper, medium-high sulfur coal is sampled from Qinglong, Guizhou province. Some basic characteristics such as the mineralogical composition of the coal rock, the monomer existing state and the granulometric composition are determined by X-ray diffraction quantitative analysis and polarisation microscope analysis respectively. Adopting the classified feed method, shaking table tests show that the feed pulp concentration is 20 per cent, the stroke is 13mm, the frequency of the stroke is 380 per min, the cross slope is 3¦ and the volume of wash water is 5.2 L per min. Under such condition, aggregate processed coal yield is 72.87 per cent and sulfur content decrease to 1.31 per cent With shaking table technology of 'First stage rough and intermediate further fine benefication', the yield of concentrate coal increased from 72.87 per cent to 81.21 per cent, while the sulfur content reduced to 1.35 per cent.

"INTRODUCTIONMagnetic mill linings have been developed from an invention by Mr. Bertil Brandt, the originator of the Skega rubber lining. The OREBED magnetic mill lining is a concept in which rubber covered strontium ferrite permanent magnets are arranged on the inside wall of a mill shell so that they attract magnetically susceptible material be it ore, media or tramp, to form a protective layer over the magnets and to serve as an operating surface with indefinite life.Noranda Mines Ltd. through its associate Norcast Division of Noranda Metal Industries formed a joint venture with the inventors to market magnetic mill linings in North America. For the past twelve months trials have been undertaken in conjunction with Orebed Inc. to test and develop these linings for grinding mill applications at the Horne Concentrator. Two independent milling circuits are currently being operated, one treating a siliceous gold ore and the other a copper slag.This paper presents the results of the magnetic lining test programme to date."

If lead buttons are cupelled under closely controlled conditions in a suitable design of furnace, silver losses during cupellation are given by a simple equation. The effect of copper on these silver losses has been studied and a "copper limit" for cupellation has been determined. Scorification and crucible fusion procedures for copper-bearing materials have been designed so that the lead buttons produced will not contain amounts of copper greater than this determined copper limit. Silver losses during these crucible fusion and scorification procedures are given by the distribution law, and can be calculated. Thus, silver can be determined in copper-bearing materials with a satisfactory degree of accuracy provided that the appropriate corrections for losses are applied to the weight of the silver prill produced.

Support design in jointed or blocky rock masses is often approached by the use of either 'rules of thumb', rock mass classification systems such as the Q-system (Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974) or RMR (Bieniawski, 1973) or conventional wedge analysis. Generally, this requires that a number of key simplifying assumptions are made and the support system is designed to cater for either a mean, most likely, or worst case scenario depending on the risk tolerance. The design block size is often a major uncertainty and often a worst case block size based on excavation span is used. Thompson and Windsor (2007) state that it is inappropriate to base support designs on the excavation size as these size blocks rarely occur if discontinuity trace lengths are considered. Probabilistic keyblock methods can be used to determine the most likely design block sizes. A methodology is presented whereby JBlock software (Estherhuizen, 1996) is used to estimate potential block sizes as part of the support design process. Using information such as the spacing, orientation and length of discontinuities, it is possible to simulate blocks in the walls of an excavation (Esterhuizen and Streuders, 1998). Keyblock analysis methods (Goodman and Shi, 1985) are used to evaluate whether blocks are removable and whether the chosen support will be sufficient to ensure stability. Data from two mines is used to demonstrate how probabilistic keyblock analyses can be used in support design. Discontinuity data was used to generate 10 000 removable blocks and the design block size statistics were determined. For one mine this information was used to scale blocks in a conventional. Unwedge analysis whilst for the other mine, the point estimate method (Harr, 1987) was applied. The choice of appropriate design acceptance criteria in terms of factor of safety and probability of failure is also considered.

The metal production industry is a significant contributor to global CO2 emissions due to the use of fossil fuels such as coal and coke. To mitigate these emissions and meet climate goals, innovative and sustainable technologies are required. Molten salt electrolysis is a promising technology that directly produces metals from their precursor sulfides or oxides using electricity. When combined with renewable electricity and an inert anode, the electrolysis process can be carbon neutral. This paper presents the results of two pilot-scale studies on the electrolytic reduction of metal oxides and sulfides in molten salts. The first study focuses on the electrolytic reduction of chalcopyrite in molten NaCl-KCl salt. The results demonstrate that in situ separation of copper, iron, and sulfur is possible, enabling the extraction of all valuable elements without CO2 emissions. Furthermore, the findings underscore the capability to eliminate impurities like zinc, antimony, arsenic, and mercury from the electrolysis product. The second study investigates the electrolytic reduction of pure/synthetic chemicals of wüstite, hematite, and magnetite, as well as a magnetite-type iron ore in molten NaOH salt. The findings reveal a stepwise reduction of iron oxides from high valence to low valence, ultimately leading to the production of metallic iron electrolytically. Notably, this study underscores the challenges associated with the selection of an economically viable and durable inert anode material for efficient oxygen generation. These results indicate that molten salt electrolysis provides a sustainable and green route for base metal production. The use of this technology has the potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in the metal production industry, contributing to achieving climate goals.

Contribution to discussion M. J. Martinson (Associate Member)*: Application of the simple selection test mentioned in the penultimate paragraph of the paper (reference to a more detailed description of the test would not have been inappropriate) should assist South African mining engineers to make more efficient and possibly more humane use of available labour. The authors mention that the test 'is in use in the gold mining industry', and it would be interesting to know the extent of this usage in terms either of number of mines or as a percentage of the total number of labourers employed on 'heavy' tasks. The paper would have been of greater interest had the authors attempted to relate their findings to the statistics of labour usage in gold mines, members of the Chamber, and to the 'heavy' tasks in particular. On this the authors confine themselves in their Introduction to the somewhat ambiguous statement that 'A relatively high proportion of the 360,000 Bantu mine labourers are employed underground on manual tasks'. To appreciate the practical significance of the authors' work one needs a detailed breakdown of the underground labour force by occupations, together with estimates of quantities such as: (a) total stope and development tonnages moved manually per shift: by shovelling by shovel/tram by tramming together with distances and any other relevant data; (b) theoretical energy expenditures required to accomplish (a); (c) actual energy expenditures required to a accomplish (a); (d) energy theoretically available to accomplish (a) based on 50 per cent of the total maximum oxygen intakes of the labour force allocated to these tasks. Analyses of this sort on an industry basis might demarcate the more promising areas for detailed investigation. Stress is often laid on the need for increased mechanisation to increase stope productivity, but it may be questioned if enough is known about the characteristics, performance and potential of our underground labour force to warrant blind acceptance of stope mechanization as the industry's panacea. Provided that health and safety are not compromised, the ultimate yardstick for assessing any form of stoping is profitability; obviously the industry must investigate very thoroughly any form of mechanization which might reasonably be expected to increase profitability, but it should also be remembered that a radical overhaul of existing systems-which have after all evolved by trial and error over the past 75

The major portion of the production of the Gulf Coast area, represented by South Texas and South Louisiana, comes from the flanks of well-defined salt domes. This oil, containing an excellent lubricating stock, ranges from 17° to 28° Be. gravity. Some lighter oil is encountered but the life of such fields is, in general, an open question. In fact, there are few light-gravity fields which have proved of much value. In all of the fields water encroachment, or, more properly, water produced with the oil, is a vital factor. After the first head of high-pressure gas is removed, ever-increasing percentages of water appear, and naturally the life of the wells is materially affected thereby. The sands are, as a rule, extremely fine, very soft, and must be carefully excluded from the hole by the use of fine screen to prevent sanding up. All sands are tipped at such extreme angles as to make coring essential for the location of water strata, oil-bearing sands and important shale. beds. Even with modern coring, the correlation of logs is a difficult problem. Due to the fact that the bulk of the oil is refined for its lubricating properties, little attention has been paid to losses by evaporation in the field. This is largely influenced by the fact that the major companies have set a price schedule, showing but two grades, "A" and "B." The average oil company, therefore, does not attempt to use the gas-lift but relies primarily on the air-lift and then only on wells considered to be particularly adapted to its use, namely those capable of producing large quantities of fluid and yet not having sufficient "kick" to flow. Furthermore, as the gas contained in the reservoirs is mostly ricthane such gas being very quickly vaporized and produced in large quantity in the early life of the fields, there is little gas left after the first flush flowing period of the wells. In fact, it is very generally conceded that gas is a precarious fuel to depend on in any of the coastal fields. This situation largely accounts for the fact that air, as the lifting medium, is almost universally used. The processes involved in turning a set of seismograph records into a geological structure map may be divided into three classes; (1) picking reflections on the records, to be used for the computations; (2) determining the basis on which the computations should be made in order to arrive at correct results; (3) making the necessary computations and plotting sections and maps. The first is usually done by the crew chief, or at least checked by him. The computing system usually originates in the head office, occasional consultations with the party chief providing modifications as necessary to meet special conditions. The computations and plotting are done by the party computer, with possibly one or two assistants if the calculations require much time. Picking the Rejleclions Marking of the reflections on the records is perhaps the most important step and the one most likely to determine the reliability of the final results. Making the "picks" is important because most of the problems that come up in practical work are connected with the problem of what can be done with poor records. The lack of any definite criteria by which to judge what are good and usable reflections is at the bottom of the difficulty. Give the same set of records to several people to mark and they will probably come out with a variation in the number of reflections per record that are deemed usable. With good records the correct picks are obvious to all, but with poor records experience seems to be the only reliable guide as to what picks are reliable and what are merely born of imagination and desperation. Experience in marking records and seeing how the structures eventually check out is more important than training in physics or geology. Different types of equipment and shooting methods may produce records quite different in appearance, from the same territory, and the computer can do his best work with records of a type on which he has had considerable experience, and has learned the limitations and shortcomings as well as the virtues of the data with which he is working. Reflections may be picked for dips only, in which case the particular reflection picked is not recognizable with certainty on records from any other spread. INTRODUCTION The Panna Maria Uranium Project is located in South Texas, between San Antonio and Corpus Cristi, approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) north of Karnes City, Texas. The tailings disposal facilities are located immediately south of the mill area and the central portion of the west pit. The mine and mill drainage pond is located north of the tailings pond. Location of the facilities is shown in Figure 1. The tailings pond is a disposal area for mill process wastes and has a capacity for storage of approximately 9 million metric tons (10 million tons) of tailings. This capacity is adequate for approximately 10 years of milling at a maximum rate of 2,700 metric tons (3,000 tons) per day. The tailings disposal facilities were designed to essentially eliminate discharge of contaminated waters to preclude degradation of surface streams or ground water. Water levels in the ponds will be maintained. through reuse in the mill and by evaporation. WASTE CHARACTERISTICS The sources of waste that is stored in the tailings pond include runoff from the mill area and tailings from the mill processing. The tailings consist of a sand slime slurry; the percentage passing the No. 200 sieve varies depending on the ore material, and it is generally in the range of 10 to 25 percent. The tailings have a density of approximately 1.2 metric tons per cu m (75 lb per cu ft) and an average specific gravity of 2.55. The liquid effluent from the mill consists of waste solutions from the grinding, leaching, extraction, and washing circuits of the mill. These solutions have an initial pH of 1.5 to 2.0 and contain the remnants of the leaching agents used in the mill process, sulfates, some silica as the primary dissolved solid, and trace quantities of soluble metals. This liquid is discharged with the solids into the tailings pond and is diluted by rainfall and runoff from the tailings dam. Runoff from the mill area, drainage from the mine area, and de-oiled water from truck washing facilities is discharged into the mine and mill drainage pond. Runoff from the mill area drains approximately 28 hectares (70 acres) from offices, shops, the mill site, the ore pad, haul roads, and adjacent areas. Mine drainage is collected in the mine area and pumped to the mine and mill drainage pond.

The ore from the Butte mines of the Anaconda company is quite siliceous; that is, it contains considerably less iron than is needed for the fluxing of the silica. The direct smelting of this ore, therefore, requires the addition of considerable fluxing material. The only flux available in sufficient quantity at Anaconda is limestone containing no metallic minerals. This necessarily makes the direct smelting of the ore so expensive that it is more profitable to subject the ore to a preliminary treatment by concentration. However, as the losses in the concentrator were very high, compared with the losses in the blast furnaccs, it was found, by calculation, more profitable to send ores containing more than a given percentage of copper to the blast furnaces, in spite of the higher costs of treatment. The dividing point was dependent on various factors, the chief of which was the prevailing market price of copper. It was customary, therefore, to segregate the ore as mined into two classes. Ore in the first class generally contained 5 per cent. or over of copper; this was sent directly to the blast-furnace department. Second-class ore contained less than 5 per cent. of copper, and averaged around 3 per cent.; it went to the concentrating department. With the introduction of the flotation process, it mas found possible to maintain an average recovery, as concentrates, of 96 per cent. At the same time, the cost of reverberatory smelting was very materially decreased by the use of pulverized coal. These two changes in practice made the blast furnaces unable to compete with the reverberatory furnaces on a cost basis. The distinction between first- and second-class ore was therefore abandoned, and the ore was treated by concentration. Obviously, on ores as high in iron as the Butte ores, the concentrator produces a product that is self-fluxing; in fact, it is possible to produce a concentrate containing more iron than is necessary to flux the silica. Under these conditions, the amount of basic fluxing materials required for the smelting operations became very srnall and the converter slag lost its former value as a blast-furnace flux. For this reason, a less expensive method of recovering the copper, silver, and gold contained in it than smelting in blast furnaces had to be found. It was not feasible

The ISRM commission on testing methods has recently presented Suggested Methods for rock stress determination (Kim & Franklin, 1987). This proposes that even if the magnitude of in situ stress is not sufficient to cause significant ground problems, the optimum shape, orientation, and layout of underground structures can be significantly affected by it. In the design of underground excavations, the engineer often requires a knowledge of the average in situ stress tensor in the rock mass. However, attempts to measure a stress state applicable to design have proved frustrating, and a high degree of uncertainty is introduced by the variability in results. In the belief that deduced fluctuations are random in nature, many separate measurements are often made, so that a more reliable stress tensor average, and some indication of the associated variance (see Dyke et al., 1986) can be calculated. Unfortunately, this approach is limited by economic considerations and, as with any sampling procedure, it is imperative to understand the sources of measured variability, in order to design an optimum measurement programme. Cundall(1987) itemised the main causes of stress variability as a. Instrument and measurement errors, and b. Natural fluctuations of stress from point to point, induced by the action of a boundary stress on the internal rock structure. At least four categories exist: i. inhomogeneous rock, bedding, intrusions etc.; ii. differential contraction, creep, or changes in rock properties with time; iii. proximity to faults or discontinuities; iv. cycles of tectonic activity that cause movement on joints. The latter was successfully investigated using the distinct element programme UDEC. In this paper, the contribution of items (iii) and (iv) (i.e. the items related to discontinuities) to the total stress variability will be discussed, for the kind of rock mass shown in Figure 1. Although many authors have concluded that rock joints have an influence on the stress in their vicinity, a more analytical approach is required if the stress distribution associated with different jointed rock masses is to be (i) compared, and (ii) related to routinely measured joint parameters. If this can be achieved then, prior to any attempt to measure stress in a jointed rock mass, a consideration of joint geometry, joint deformability, and the geological kinematics of joints (e.g. the magnitude and direction of previous movements), can place valuable `common sense' constraints on the expected stress system for minimal extra cost.

"Rare earth elements (REEs) have a series of specific properties making them invaluable in products including lighting, electronics and magnetism. The elements have been used in many commercial products, for example, turbines, electric vehicles, batteries, lighting, computers, cell phones and lasers. Heavy REEs are attracting the interests of scientists from many countries, and these elements have become critical to develop high-tech materials. Ion-adsorbed rare earth deposits were first discovered in China. The minerals are also called weathered crust elution-deposited rare earths. The particular types of deposits are distributed throughout southern China. The ion-adsorbed deposits are rich in medium and heavy REEs, accounting for more than 80% of the world’s total medium and heavy REEs production. However, the separation of heavy REEs from ion-adsorbed deposit is difficult owing to their similar chemical properties. The conventional separating technologies have caused serious pollution. A novel extraction strategy has been developed in this laboratory and is presented herein.INTRODUCTIONThe unique properties of rare earth elements (REEs) render them important in high-strength magnets, lighting phosphors, polishing compounds, and ceramics. Especially for applications that take advantage of the f-orbital electrons, substitutions outside the REE family are often difficult to impossible (Nassar, Du, & Graedel, 2015). Extracting and separating individual elements from mined ore is not easy, requiring lengthy operations to separate them, and this results in high costs and adverse effects on the environment. The low concentration of REE in the earth’s crust makes economic exploitation difficult (de Boer & Lammertsma, 2013) and the sustainability of the REEs separation industry has aroused considerable attention (McLellan, Corder, Golev, & Ali, 2014). To eliminate protons and break the dimmers in organic phosphonic acids or carboxylic acids, the saponification of acidic extractants by acid-base neutralization reactions are widely used in industrial REEs separation (Sun, Luo, & Dai, 2012a). The saponification procedure contributes to increased extractability and selectivity of acidic extractants to a considerable extent. The common industrial saponification mechanisms and technological processes are shown in Figure 1 and include ammonium saponification (saponified by NH3·H2O), sodium saponification (saponified by NaOH), calcium saponification (saponified by Ca(OH)2), and magnesium saponification (saponified by MgO). These inevitably result in wastewaters containing NH4 +, Na+, Ca2+ or Mg2+ because of the cation-exchange extraction mechanisms (Xiao, Long, Huang, Feng, Cui, & Wang, 2013; Song, Fu, Wang, Liu, Zhou, & Li, 2014; Sun & Waters, 2014)."

This report describes laboratory studies by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the suitability of a static oxygen (OJ adsorption test for evaluating the self-heating tendencies of coals. Reliable minimum self-heating temperature (SHT) values from adiabatic oven tests were used as standards for comparison and evaluation. A suite of six coals was tested in the adiabatic oven and in sealed flasks. In the latter tests, both undried and dried samples, in a range of four particle sizes, were examined. Miniature pressure trans-ducers monitored pressures in the flasks, and gas samples taken at the end of the tests quantified all the gases present. An excellent correlation was found between the minimum SHT's and amounts of O2 adsorbed over a 7-day period for dried coals, independent of particle size. In addition, a good correlation was obtained between the minimum SHT's and pressure changes in the flasks at the end of the test for the same coals, also independent of particle size. Based on these results, the sealed flask test can be reliably used to determine the self-heating tendency of a bituminous coal sample.

Separation Technologies, LLC (ST) has developed a processing system based on triboelectric charging and electrostatic separation that provides the mineral processing industry a means to beneficiate fine materials with an entirely dry technology. The environmentally friendly process can eliminate wet processing and required drying of the final material. The process requires little if any pre-treatment of the material other than grinding and operates at high capacity ? up to 45 tonnes per hour by a compact machine. Energy consumption is low, approximately 1 kWh/tonnes of material processed. Since the only potential emission of the process is dust, permitting is typically relatively easy. In contrast to the other available electrostatic separation processes that are typically limited to particles greater than 75 µm in size, the ST belt separator is ideally suited for separation of very fine (<1 µm) to moderately coarse (500 µm) materials with very high throughputs. The triboelectric particle charging is effective for a wide range of materials and only requires particle ? particle contact. The small gap, high electric field, counter current flow, vigorous particle-particle agitation and self-cleaning action of the belt on the electrodes are the critical features of the ST separator. The high efficiency multi-stage separation through charging / recharging and internal recycle results in far superior separations and is effective on fine materials that cannot be separated at all by the conventional electrostatic techniques. Since 1995, this triboelectric process has been extensively used for the beneficiation of coal fly ash with eighteen separators in place and over 100 machine-years of operation at locations in the US and Europe. The technology has been also successfully applied to the beneficiation of a variety of minerals including calcium carbonates, talc, and potash.
