Two recent unplanned detonations occurred during blasting operations in sulfide-bearing ores in a Nevada gold mine. Other premature detonations have also reportedly occurred at other Nevada, California, and Arizona operations within the past few years, with increasing frequency. Unplanned or premature detonations can be extremely hazardous to life and can cause extensive property damage. A miner was injured in one of these occurrences. This report, by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, is intended to acquaint personnel involved in such mining activities with the basic causes for these accidents. These causes include the exothermic oxidation of pyrite (FeS2) and formation of ferrous sulfate (FeS04), the exothermic and energetic reaction of the ferrous sulfate with ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO)-based explosives, and the associated elevated temperatures that can set off detonators and explosives in the boreholes. Recommendations for safe operation by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the Bureau, and the mine involved with the recent incidents include monitoring temperatures in the blast holes, analyzing for sulfate and ferrous ions, and limiting the time between loading and firing in accordance with conditions in the blast holes. Other procedures for safe operations should fit specific conditions in, the mines.

Tectonic stress is an important parameter for understanding the dynamics of underground engineering and for the exploitation of coalbed methane. Multiple-period structural features usually have complex spatial relationships in tectonic superposition areas, which provides evidence for identification of the sequence of the tectonic stress period. Conjugated joints and slickensides are used to reconstruct the tectonic stress of the No. 8 Mine in Pingdingshan. Based on the geological unit division and field measurements, data on hundreds of joints and slickensides are collected from 33 stations. The tectonic stress results indicated by the conjugated joints show that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NEE-SWW, NW-SE, NE-SW, and NNESSW. The tectonic stress results of the slickensides indicate that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NNE-SSW, NNW-SSE, NEE-SWW, and NW-SE. According to the systematic analysis of the joints and slickensides, this paper separates the superposed joint and slickenside sets and identifies the tectonic stress periods with their abutting relationships. Three tectonic stress periods are determined and the sequence of the tectonic stress periods is NE-SW, NW-SE, and NEE-SWW. The results are consistent with other tectonic stress measurements for both the region and the locality.

THE melting department is the heart of the foundry. From it clean metal flows to the molding floor, in the right quantity, at the right time and at a sufficiently low cost-or, if not, the foundry fails to thrive. Since it is our purpose here to discuss present-day melting practice in the foundry, it may be well at the start to emphasize the wide differences in foundries and the conditions under which they must operate in order to reach the goal stated in the first paragraph. In every foundry, large or small, jobbing or captive, the same factors must be dealt with but they are of varying consequence and must be dealt with in varying ways in different foundries. Particularly in the nonferrous industry, there is so wide a variation in the composition of alloys used and in the character of castings made that no one type of furnace, nor any one method of operation, can be expected to produce the best results at all times. The present discussion will not attempt to include all nonferrous metals. It is intended to cover only the copper-base alloys in which copper is the dominant element, most of which are commonly known as brass or bronze. The discussion is further limited to the melting of these copper-base alloys for use in sand-casting foundries. Die-casting plants, the brass-rolling mills and certain other metal industries have melting problems peculiar to those industries, which will not be considered here. The following considerations are elemental in all foundries and are listed in what is believed to be the relative order of their present-day importance: I. The melting department must meet the foundry's requirement for dean, fluid metal, of specified composition and purity, at a temperature suitable for the work the foundry has in hand. This is the prime consideration in any foundry, at any time, anywhere. 2. Working conditions surrounding the melting furnaces and attending their use must be good. 3. The cost of molten metal at the mold must be as low as possible. 4. The operating characteristics of the furnaces must be sufficiently flexible, to meet normal variations in foundry requirements. 5. The operation and maintenance of the melting equipment must not require more skill and experience than is available in the particular foundry in question. METAL QUALITY It is not a function of the melting furnace to refine or improve the quality of the metal but simply to melt it without impairing its quality. Good practice requires, therefore, that care must be taken to supply the melting department with metal of inherently good quality, assured by specification or otherwise, having all the properties necessary to produce the castings desired. An alloy contains a number of primary elements, which must be present in definite proportions if the castings made from it are to have the desired properties. If the castings are made to a customer's specification, this will state the range within which these principal elements (for example, copper, tin, lead and zinc) are permitted to vary.

A dificuldade em produzir pelotas auto - fundentes, com garantia da manutenção das propriedades necessárias e que favoreçam o processo de produção de ferro primário via alto-forno, tem sido o desafio no que se refere á avaliação das diversas formas de amenizar os efeitos detrimentais da adição de fundentes, contendo altos teores do composto MgO, nas etapas do processo produtivo de pelotização, garantindo assim uma composição química, as características físicas e metalúrgicas do produto final (pelota queimada). O plano de pesquisa visou o desenvolvimento de um “novo produto”, pelotas de minérios de ferro auto - fundentes com alto teor de MgO com características superiores para suportar às solicitações impostas no próprio processo de sua produção, no manuseio e no atendimento às solicitações durante as etapas de redução e amolecimento e fusão nos altos fornos, quando comparadas ao uso em substituição as adições de fundentes ricos do referido composto.

Survival of the mining industry as a viable economic entity in the United States is being seriously threatened by declining grades of ore reserves, rising operational and capital costs, and increased governmental taxes, restrictions, and subsidizing of third world competition. Discovery of major high-grade deposits is becoming increasingly unlikely. International competitiveness of the U.S. deposits will depend upon 'Yankee Ingenuity', innovations in mining methods, metallurgical treatment, and financial arrangements, and a viable national strategy. This will require not only effective management for control of operations, but management that encourages breakthroughs in technology, financing, labor relations, and in public and governmental understanding. The mine geologist and the exploration geologist both have important roles to play in all aspects of this fight for survival of the industry.

Geologic condition is one of the most important factors for longwall mining operations, especially, the existence of faults limits the mineable area, or cause stress variations at the longwall face. Recently, a longwall panel passed through a fault at the Shoal Creek Mine of Drummond Company, Inc. The fault was situated diagonally along the longwall face and the coal seam was displaced up to 2.4 m (8.0 ft) in a mode of a normal fault. LoSCoMS (Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System) was used for monitoring shield pressure every minute and interpreting data in terms of setting, developing and final pressures. The results of the analysis regarding the influence of the fault on the shield pressure are presented.

New developments in air-gas lift practices in the Mid-Continent area since our Pall meeting in Fort Worth have done much to increase the efficiency of installations, and thus bring within economic limit of air-gas lift many wells which could not have been flowed profitably before. After the gas-lift had so thoroughly demonstrated its value in the Seminole field, its use spread to other areas and many installations were made of which the economy could be questioned. In the Seminole area, when production began to decline it was necessary either to increase the efficiency of the air or gas-lift or to put the wells on the pump, and pumping was not a process of lifting oil to which any operator looked forward with confidence. These conditions have resulted in the development of many practices which increase the efficiency and permit wells to be flowed with air or gas which earlier could not have been flowed economically, and wells which have been flowing to continue to a lower rate of production. The practices which have come into more common usage in the Mid-Continent area recently are mostly revivals of and improvements on practices which have been known in air-lift work for several years. Many arc peculiar to the individual well on which they are used. Intermittent Flowing Some interesting results are being obtained in Seminole and other districts by intermittent injection of gas. Gas is introduced during per-iods iods of 3 to 5 min. at a rate considerably over that necessary to acquire the production at a steady rate of injection, and is then cut off for a period of 3 to 15 min. Two to five wells are run from the same group of conlpressors. The total volume of gas required is sometimes reduced as much as one-third of that required when it is introduced at a constant rate, without changing the amount of oil production. The maximum pressure required is usually higher, but the average equal to or lower than that required for constant rate of flow. The effect on the wells is usually an irregular rate of flowing which may cause inconvenience where recycling is practiced. RECENTLY there has been much speculation concerning the advantages of using oxygen enriched air or pure oxygen in pyrometallurgical processes. The advantage of using oxygen in the iron blast furnace and elsewhere in ferrous production metallurgy has been given careful consideration and, as a result, several experiments have been tried and a number of papers have recently appeared on this subject.1.2 The use of oxygen in nonferrous smelting likewise poses interesting problems, therefore any experimental data obtained in this area should likewise be of general interest.3 Ashcroft4 in 1933 claimed to have obtained improved results when copper concentrates were roasted in pure oxygen. However, his' paper gives neither data nor experimental details. A few years ago a research program was started in this laboratory which had for its objective the determination of the mechanism of oxidation of metallic sulfides under varying conditions. To date we have studied the oxidation of galena, 5 sphalerite, and chalcocite. It is a well known fact that copper sulfide minerals are oxidized slowly by weathering agents, so that the sulfides of copper which find their way into a tailing pond are gradually changed into watersoluble and acid-soluble compounds. Commercially, the oxidation of copper sulfide minerals is accomplished by roasting them at elevated temperatures in air using a suitable (usually multiple-hearth) roaster. Most copper smelters are equipped with such roasters. In this phase of the study we were especially interested in determining the effect of temperature on: (I) the air oxidation of chalcocite and (2) the oxidation of chalcocite using commercial oxygen. The amount of sulphur removed as sulphur dioxide, the percentages of water-soluble copper, and of acid-soluble copper were determined for the air oxidation tests. In the tests using commercial oxygen, the percentages of sulphur dioxide, water-soluble copper, acid-soluble copper, water-soluble sulphur and acid-soluble sulphur were determined. For these experiments the temperature was varied from 250 to 700°°C. EXPERIMENTAL Preparation of Chalcocite (Cu2S) Natural chalcocite is not pure. Minerals such as bornite, covellite, and chalcopyrite may be present. It was decided, therefore, to prepare some chalcocite in our own laboratory. "Novel silicate-alginate composite beads containing 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2- ethylhexyl ester (P507) were synthesized and applied for the adsorption of Nd3+ from aqueous solutions. The adsorption amount of Nd3+ has been increased owing to the introduction of P507. The effect of equilibrium pH (pHe), the kinetic and isotherm experiments were investigated. The adsorption reaches equilibrium at 9 h and the maximum uptake capacity is up to 195.4 mg/(g dry adsorbent). The Langmuir isotherm equations are used to describe the adsorption process. Complete desorption can be realized with 0.2 M HCl within 20 min. INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REEs) have found various applications in different domains, such as metallurgy industry, ceramic industry, nuclear fuel control, photo-electro-magnetic functional materials owing to their unique properties. Neodymium (Nd), as a representative of all of the most valuable REEs, is widely used as catalysts, laser crystals, capacitors, rubber additives, Nd-Fe-B magnets, hydrogen storage and so on. Thus, the separation and purification of neodymium is significant. Unfortunately, Nd always coexists with other REEs and selective separation of the individual Nd from the REEs mixtures is still extremely difficult owing to their strictly similar atomic structures and chemical properties.Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) and solid-liquid adsorption (SLA) are the most widely adopted techniques for the separation of REEs in the hydrometallurgical fields. The LLE process is well suited for large-scale continuous operation because of its inherent high capacity and fast kinetics. Nowadays, as a commercial extractant, 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) has been extensively studied for extraction and separation of REEs since it has considerably good extractability and high separation efficiency (Xu et al., 1992). SLA is one of the effective and green separation methods with some prominent advantages, such as easy regeneration of adsorbents, small footprint size, less industrial wastes, higher enrichment factors and column efficiency,rapid solid–liquid separation without emulsion and so on. Hence, the introduction of extractants with excellent performance into adsorbents will integrate the advantages of LLE and SLA (Lee et al., 2009)."

The Western Australian School of Mines (WASM), Kalgoorlie, has been performing dynamic testing of reinforcement systems as part of the Minerals and Energy Research Institute of Western Australia (MERIWA) Projects M349 and M349A sponsored by WASM, the Western Australian State Government and the mining industry. These projects have resulted in the construction and commissioning of the WASM Dynamic Test Facility and a program of reinforcement system testing. The primary purpose of the WASM projects is to evaluate the performance of complete reinforcement systems when subjected to an axial dynamic load. The test procedure, monitoring and associated analysis enable assessments for each component (ie the element, the internal fixing mechanism and the surface hardware) of the reinforcement system. The performance of a reinforcement system is usually defined by a static force-displacement response to axial loading. However, this static response may not be applicable to dynamic loadings associated with violent failure of rock due to overstressing as mines progress to greater depths. It was therefore appropriate that the responses of reinforcement systems subjected to dynamic loading be defined and evaluated. The key findings from the tests on a number of reinforcement systems are presented and recommendations made regarding their application for dynamic loading.

Treatments with high concentration solution of inorganic acid at temperatures under boiling point are a usual method for clay minerals structure modification. For many industrial uses bentonites must be cleared of impurities. In the present paper, a sample of Brazilian bentonite from Vitoria da Conquista, Bahia was modified by mild acid attack using hydrochloric acid under moderate conditions (90 °C, reaction times of 1, 6, 12, 18 and 24 h in close reactor, concentration of the aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid 1.5 M, acid solution/clay ratio of 1 g/10 mL). The attacked samples were characterized by CEC, XRF, SEM, EDS and Stereomicroscopy. The purpose of these attacks is to reduce the concentration of impurities with minimal damage in clay minerals structure. The modified bentonite presented good results and tends to be a good economic and environmental alternative to manufacturing products with high added value such as polymer/clay nanocomposites, cosmetics and medicines.

The current copper ore handling systems in use at Xstrata CopperÆs Mount Isa Copper Operations are up to 33 years old and have hoisted over 160 Mt at a rate of around 6 Mtpa. The mineÆs production profile is increasing in line with the optimum life of mine plan to over 6.6 Mtpa, which requires a system utilisation and reliability above that previously achieved. Copper ore is hoisted up the U62 shaft, which forms the central part of the U62 ore handling system. In theory this system can cope with the duty planned if the bottleneck is only the U62 winder. To achieve the planned production rate will require increased focus on reliability of each component in the ore handling system so that ore is available at the shaft for hoisting whenever the shaft is available, and the shaft is available for the maximum practical time. Increased availability will be achieved through the outcomes of the study of each component in the U62 system, and the internal ore handling systems that deliver ore from as far as 2 km laterally and 700 m vertically from the U62 shaft. The true capacity of each component is being determined and current performance is being measured with the aim of improving performance through root cause analysis and engineering out the causes of delays. The program began in March 2004 and this paper describes the progress achieved as of April 2005.

The application of known pelletizing tech- nology was successful in the agglomeration of zinc concentrate into pellets of minus 6mm siz- ing using fine zinc calcine and sulphuric acid as binder. Subsequent roasting trials conducted in a 0.3 m diameter fluid bed reactor, showed that the pellets satisfactorily withstood hot physical abrasion during fluidization. Fines generation was low and the pellet calcine was hard, possessing excellent handling properties. Results of laboratory scale static pellet sinter- ing tests showed conclusively that the deterior- ation in sinter physical quality experienced with fine calcine was not apparent when the calcine was added to the mix in pellet form. Based on the results of small scale exper- imental work, a one tonne per hour pilot plant was constructed and operated. Several thousand tonne of pellets were produced-for fluid bed roasting in Badische Analin and Soda Fabrik (B.A.S.F.) turbulent layer (T.L.) roasters previously designed for roasting iron pyrite concentrate. Continuity of the T.L. fluid bed roasting operations was achieved when the waste heat boilers were replaced with atmospheric coolers and thus eliminated the problems of gas flow restrictions. Sinter plant trials were conducted over a period of two weeks with the addition of pellet calcine to the sinter feed. Results showed a marked improvement in sinter plant performance, and as a result of better bed permeability, increased sinter production was achieved, with- out significant deterioration in sinter quality.

A variety of practical tests have been tried in the mining industry to determine the support properties of mine roof bolts. Such tests include torsion wrench readings, hammer blow tests and the use of plates with built-in tension indicators. This paper gives some details of pull tests with a hydraulic jack, as carried out in coal mines of western Canada. M A~Y criteria exist for establishing the efficiency of roof bolting, and the one adopted de-pends on the nature of the problem and on the individual leanings of the investigators. Consequently, sufficient studies have not been made from a common viewpoint or under similar geological and techno-logical conditions to compare these methods of evaluation. However, regardless of whether certain tests provide sufficient factual data to form a basis for theoretical research on bolting or not, many of these tests can and do provide a positive means of judging the suitability of chosen roof bolting techniques and equipment under definite geological conditions.

Information is a key ingredient for successful mineral exploration and development. Whether identifying potential exploration localities from a map, interpreting technical reports or searching a register for operators past and present, the common aim is a parcel of information from which the enquirer can make a decision. Traditional information gathering often requires days or weeks of manual research, studying maps, files, reports etc, before consolidating the results into an investment proposal. In recent times, such methods have largely been replaced by Information Technology, making the process much faster, easier and more centralised. However, notwithstanding some very successful technology implementations, the general rush to computerise everything in sight has left many organisations struggling to cope with the management of large volumes of diverse information. Information management is now recognised as the most important factor in determining the success of information technology implementation. The Northern Territory Department of Mines and Energy (DME) has established a detailed information management strategy to underpin the rapid advance of computer technology within the organisation. A broad base of timely and reliable information is gradually becoming more accessible. It is envisaged that the availability of combined spatial, textual and scientific information will provide a sound basis for decision-making within the Department and the mining industry at large. Although information held by DME will be available at all times (24 hours on-line), its security and confidentiality will be guaranteed. The production of the DME system is aimed at satisfying the corporate objective to facilitate and promote mineral exploration and development. This paper outlines some current developments in the system.

"Construction of the largest desalinization plant in the Americas has commenced in northern Chile. It is part of a several billion dollar expansion at a copper mine whose operations nearly stopped due to the challenge of securing a reliable source of water from the Pacific Ocean in a safe and environmentally sound manner. This paper discusses the risk management, design and construction of a quadruple chamber intake and outfall shaft, high capacity pump station, three 7m diameter vertically drilled marine shafts and three subsea tunnels constructed through challenging Andean hard-rock geology. The three 2.5m diameter subsea microtunnels are being mined with vertical curves through variable quality rock 30 meters beneath the ocean and retrieved in the wet from the 7m diameter marine shafts. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The battle for securing the rights to a constant water supply is a worldwide issue and nowhere is that more evident than the Atacama Desert of Chile, the world’s driest place with areas of the desert that have not seen rainfall in recorded history. The Atacama Desert also happens to be home to some of the world’s largest ore deposits which require huge amounts of water to extract and process. What available water there is comes from three main sources: deep seated wells, glacial water from the Andes Mountains, and desalinated water. Vying for water from wells and glacial streams and lakes are numerous agricultural and domestic facilities in the valleys surrounding the Atacama Desert. Environmental regulations and legal rulings have limited the amount of “natural” source water which can be used for mining purposes. Desalination plants are a known solution for combating water scarcity, albeit a costly one. The total estimated cost of constructing this desalination plant is over $3B USD, which will include a 2500lps capacity and an approximately 118km pipeline from the coast up to the mine located in the Andes. The overall scope of the project includes design, procurement, and construction packages for the 2500lps desalination plant including the seawater reverse osmosis plant, water conveyance to the mine, power transmission, the reservoir and the marine works package which forms the basis of this paper. A case history of design, prediction, instrumented static load tests on probe piles, installation monitoring, and integrity testing of production piles is presented. Based upon project-specific subsoil conditions, as obtained from several 60 to 80 ft (18.3 to 24.4 m) deep test borings, deep foundation system alternatives included driven concrete and steel pipe piles as well as augered cast-in-place (ACIP) piles. High structural loads, site-specific constraints, and the production time frame mandated by the project owner led to the selection of an ACIP pile foundation system that was designed for a pile capacity of 75 tons (667 kN) in compression and 35 tons (309 kN) in tension. Site-specific concerns were raised about the highly porous nature of fragmented and decomposed sandy limestone as well as the high grout intake during construction that could result in increased foundation cost as well as interconnecting of the piles in the rock layer. Consequentially, a multi-phase ACIP pile evaluation program consisting of instrumented compression pile load tests, in conjunction with single-hole ultrasonic pile testing, pile echo testing (sonic testing), as well as full-time production pile monitoring by an experienced geotechnician was specified. As a result of this testing and evaluation program, while grout usage was determined to be within an acceptable range, the instrumented compression load tests yielded data that allowed use of 55 ft (16.8 m) long ACIP piles in lieu of the original plans to use 70 ft (21.3 m) long precast concrete piles. This information was effectively utilized as part of the overall quality control program to install a total of 268, 14 in. (356 mm) diameter ACIP piles within the building footprint to depths of 55 ft (16.8 m) below the pile cut-off elevation as part of the foundation support system. Information recorded during installation included rate of insertion/extraction of the auger, grout pump strokes and pressure, total grout volume, and grout factors, as well as quality and strength of grout. Additionally, many pre-selected installed piles were tested for integrity with a Pile Integrity Sonic Analyzer (PISA) using both sonic and ultrasonic methods. This engineered, monitored, and tested foundation solution provided an effective and quality intensive basis for completion and approval of the foundation work for the building that resulted in cost savings over other foundation alternatives for the owner.

"Photogrammetry, as a tool for monitoring underground mine deformation, is an alternative to traditional point measurement devices, and may be capable of accurate measurements in situations where technologies such as laser scanning are unsuited, undesired or cost-prohibitive. An underground limestone mine in Ohio is used as a test case for monitoring of structurally unstable pillars. Seven pillars were photographed during four visits over a 63- day period. Using photogrammetry, point clouds of the mine geometry were obtained and triangulated surfaces were generated to determine volumes of change over time. Pillar spalling in the range of 0.29–4.03 m3 of rock on individual rib faces was detected. Isolated incidents of rock expansion prior to failure, and the isolated failure of a weak shale band, were also observed. Much of the pillars remained unchanged during the monitoring period, which is indicative of proper alignment in the triangulated surfaces. The photographs of some ribs were of either too poor quality or had insufficient overlap, and were not included. However, photogrammetry was successfully applied to multiple ribs in quantifying the pillar geometry change over time.IntroductionAdequately measuring underground rock mass movements is integral to understanding how rock masses behave and how to interact with them safely and efficiently. Many modern measurement techniques employed in underground mining environments rely on point measurements, such as through extensometers or borehole relief methods (Christiansson, 2006). These techniques, while commonplace, do not provide a comprehensive view of how the rock mass is behaving. The dynamic changes in stress states underground, coupled with the mechanical uncertainty of rock masses, near active excavations, creates a need for measurement systems which better capture the behavior of the rock mass. Photogrammetry is a technology capable of producing the wide-area displacement measurements required for a comprehensive understanding of rock mass movements.Digital photogrammetry is a means of obtaining threedimensional point clouds from digital photographs. By finding the same point across multiple images, all viewing an object from different angles, the location of that point in three-dimensional space can be inferred. Close range digital photogrammetry (CRDP) is photogrammetry applied to measuring objects or scenes less than 100 meters away (Atkinson, 1996), and is used for various functions in underground mining environments. These uses include, but are not limited to, mapping fracture networks (Kim, Kim, & Won, 2005)(Somervuori & Lamberg, 2010), characterizing fractures (Styles et al., 2010) and measuring volumes of blast rock (Heal, Hudyma, & Potvin, 2004)."

Various reagents are added to flotation pulps to manipulate the chemical environment in order to create favourable conditions for the separation of the desired mineral from the unwanted gangue. Interactions occur between these reagents and between the other chemical parameters existing in the flotation pulp which complicate the elucidation of the behaviour of the respective reagents. This paper discusses the roles of the main classes of reagents added viz. collectors, frothers, depressants and activators, as well as the interactions between frothers and collectors. A case study reporting synergistic interactions between thiol collectors in the flotation of pyrite at pH = 4 is included. The use of Potassium n-butyl xanthate (PNBX) and a dithiocarbamate type collector (DTC) were tested both as pure collectors and as components in a collector mixture. In the batch flotation tests sulphur recovery and grade, water recovery, rate of recovery and image analysis of the surface froth were used to evaluate the effect of the mixture on the overall flotation performance. Bubble loading tests showed that the use of the mixture improved the efficiency of the particle collection process by bubbles. Thermochemical measurements of the adsorption of the collectors onto the mineral, indicated the formation of different surface products by the two collectors.
