Dewatering stage is among the most important industrial unit operations, and is wide adopted in many different industries, due the fact that a large portion of industrial products is produced using suspensions of solids in liquids. Nowadays the mineral processing tailings disposal is a big problem due the environmental degradation produced. The phosphate rock processing in Anglo American Phosphate Brazil, situated in Catalão/Go/Brazil, generates around 180 t/h of tailings for a plant feed of 480 t/h (approximately 37,5% of the processing plant feed), with 5 to 10% of solids and approximately 14% of P2O5. Nowadays the tailings are sent direct to the tailings dam. The present work proposes the paste production using with the tailings from phosphate rock processing plant divide in two different stages. The first one composed by the free settling of the material in presence of industrial flocculants in a graduated cylinder with 2.0 L of internal volume for one hour, in the same way it must occur in conventional thickeners. After that time, the clarified liquid was drained and the remaining pulp was sent to the second stage consisting in the tailings vacuum filtration. Ten different flocculants and nine different filter media were tested. The found results were satisfactory for paste tailings production with solids percentage around 65%.

In this study, free fall tests are conducted with the objective of understanding the breakage properties of waste concrete for the guide of the direction of the better comminution process. Waste concrete of 75mm×53mm is tested at various drop heights with or without heat pretreatment. Test results indicate that a block of waste concrete does not break by free fall, but eventually breaks by repeated free falls. The number of free falls required for complete separation of large aggregates from the cement mortar considerably reduced when the samples were heated at 400?. Therefore, a great energy saving can be obtained when heating the waste concrete prior to crushing. The energy saving was found to be dependent on the height of free fall but in all cases, was still large enough to offset the additional energy required for heating. Also, it was found that the heat pre-treatment gives an additional advantage in that it produced cleaner recycled aggregates. This may result from easier detachment of cement mortar from the aggregates due to weakening of bonding forces by heating. By analyzing the size distribution of the crushed product, a free-fall breakage model is developed using the particle breakage ratio and the breakage pattern. The developed model can be used to predict and to analyze waste concrete processing circuit.

We report the studies of Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEM FC) and hydrogen storage materials at McMaster University for the last 14 years. From the initial investigation of ionic conduction mechanism to the revelation of the origin of non-Arrhenius temperature dependence, as well as the synthesis and characterization of high temperature polymer electrolytes, both experimental and theoretical works have been compiled for the fuel cell membranes. In addition to the discovery of suppressed ionic conduction in Electrode-Membrane Assembly (EMA) and novel hydrocarbon PEMs based on micro-emulsion, the first evidence of hydrogen adsorption saturation by carbon nano-tubes was also achieved, which has been the bottleneck for the application of PEM FC. Prior to our study, a number of controversial publications have claimed the hydrogen capacity of these materials to be between 0.1 to 10.0 wt.%, and none demonstrated a plateau of adsorption with pressure that is consistent with monolayer saturation. Others suggested that the tube bundle structure is opened under high pressure to enable higher adsorption on newly uncovered surfaces, but received no confirmation. Using our home made high-pressure instrument with in-situ electrical probes, we found that a plateau is nearly achieved at about 300 atm in the room temperature isotherm, and that nanotube bundles actually compress with pressure instead of splitting, using in-situ electrical measurements.

Potential problems associated with groundwater inflows are a major concern to many Saskatchewan mining operations. Rock mass behaviour and stability have been linked to groundwater inflow potential. An estimate of the hydraulic conductivity of the rock mass is an important factor for assessing groundwater inflow potential. This paper presents a procedure that was developed to conduct air permeability tests, for estimating the hydraulic conductivity of the rock mass. Tests were conducted near underground excavations with the goal of assessing links between measured air permeability, rock mass classification and the rock mass response to adjacent excavations. Measured changes in air permeability corresponding to the distance from excavation boundaries may indicate changes to joint properties such as joint aperture, continuity and frequency. This study outlines the instrumentation, the experimental and analytical procedures, and the preliminary results from testing.

The system Ta-Rh was investigated over the entire comnposition range using metallogvaphic and X-ray techniques as well as thermal analysis. Terminal solubility limits, solidus temperatures, and the crystal structures of two new intermediate phases were determined. There are five intermediate phases: o, tetragonal, isostructural with o(Fe-Cr); a1, orthorhomnbic : a2, orthorhombic, isostructural with CozSi; 0 3, a high -temperature phase of unknozun structure; and a TaRh3, cubic, AuCu3 structure. a, aL, a,, and a melt peritectically; and a TaRh, has a maximum melting point. Five peritectic and one eutectic reactions occur. THE Ta-Rh phase diagram has not been fully treated in the literature; however, two inter metallic phases have been described.&apos;-&apos; This study attempts to work out the diagram covering the details of phase boundaries as well as the crystallography of the intermediate phases. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Starting materials were tantalum powder of 99.8 pct purity, supplied by National Research Corp., Cambridge, Mass., and rhodium powder of 99.9 pct purity, supplied by Bishop Co., Malvern, Pa. Analyses as given by the manufacturers are presented in Table I. In addition to the spectroscopic analysis, an oxygen analysis has been made of the tantalum powder. After preliminary trials, the standard procedure employed in making the alloys was as follows (see Ref. 4 for further details). The powders were weighed, mixed manually, compacted under 16,000 psi, and arc-melted at not more than 500 amp under thoroughly titanium gettered welding-grade argon of 400 mm Hg pressure. The gettering process was repeated after each melt. It had been shown previously5 that under these conditions no oxygen pick-up exceeding 0.001 pct in a hafnium button could be detected. The buttons, ranging from 5 to 10 g in weight, were inverted or, if possible, crushed and remelted three times. Melting presented no difficulty, except for tantalum-rich al- loys, which showed considerable spashing during melting. The average weight loss of 1 wt pct rose to 2.5 wt pct in these cases. Subsequent melting, however, resulted in losses of less than 0.1 wt pct. The melts obtained frequently showed small in-homogeneities, mostly in the tantalum-rich part of the system below 25 at. pct Rh. This was not due to insufficient blending of the elements, but to crystallization taking place from the cooled bottom. This condition was not improved by further re-melting; therefore the following precautions were taken. Cross sections of as-cast buttons were made. For the investigation only buttons were used where these inhomogeneities did not exceed 1 at. pct (estimated from the amounts of haSeS resent). In addition, only the center portions of such buttdns were utilized to minimize errors. Smaller buttons showed smaller concentration gradients and were used as a check. Finally, all alloys were homogenized to eliminate coring (see below). After this, the error in alloy composition due to inhomogeneity was cl at. pct. In order to confirm the concentrations of the alloys and to provide an impurity check, wet-chemical analyses and oxygen-fusion analyses of four key alloys were carried out. The results, together with the concentrations as calculated with the weight balance method, are presented in Table 11. It was found that for three alloys the agreement is very good (< 0.2

The system Cb-Re was examined in detail utilizing pure metals, careful melting techniques, and heat treatments. Metallographic and X-my methods were utilized for phase identification. In addition to soli-dus determinations, the composition limits and mode of formation of the intermetallic compounds 0 and X were determined. The binary constitution diagram Cb-Re has been the subject of a number of investigations.&apos;-7 Two intermetallic phases have been described and tentative diagrams have been proposed. It was the aim of this investigation to obtain a complete and more accurate diagram through the use of purer alloys and improved techniques. The diagram worked out by Knapton7 was published after our experiments were concluded. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The starting materials were Re powder of 99.95 pct purity, supplied by the Chase Brass and Copper Co., and Cb rondelles of 99.6 pct purity, supplied by the Electro Metallurgical Co. Typical analyses are given in Table I. The alloys were prepared from compacted Re powder and Cb rondelles; for critical compositions master alloys were used. The melts varied from 5 to 50 g and were melted nonconsumably in an Heraeus arc furnace, under ti-tanium-gettered laboratory grade argon. It was necessary to invert the buttons and remelt, followed by crushing and further remeltings, the number of which depended on the nature of the fracture of the alloy. The weight of each alloy was carefully checked after each melting operation. It was found that significant weight losses occurred only when loose Re powder was used. These losses amounted to a maximum of 3 wt pct in such instances, but did not occur after the charge was once molten, regardless of the composition. Typical loss of weight after 4 remelts, including crushing, amounted to 0.2 wt pct. Oxygen pickup during successive melting cycles did not appear to be significant, since the weight gain values never exceeded 0.01 wt pct. Control of the composition of the alloys was not too difficult; however, the problem of homogenization was a far greater one. Optimum alloying conditions were finally achieved by a combination of master alloy production and repeated crushing and remelting cycles. The compositions of the alloys utilized to determine the constitution diagram are listed in Table 11. The weight balance method was used ultimately as the sole analytical method, since repeated checks indicated that it was accurate to 0.2 pct, if the weight losses were small. The results were double-checked by a metallographic study of the homogeneity of the samples, since this was presumed to be the more serious factor. Heat treatments at 1200°C or lower were accomplished by sealing the specimens in Vycor tubes, heating in a Globar furnace, followed by air cooling. This was considered to be an adequate quench because of the very low temperatures involved. For temperatures of 1200" to 1900°, alloys were homogenized and heat treated in a tungsten-filament resistance vacuum furnace. From 1900" to 2750" a tantalum-tube resistance furnace was utilized, operating under a vacuum of 105 mm Hg. The temperature measurements up to 1200" were made by means of platinum-platinum 10 pct Rh thermocouples, with an accuracy of 5°C. Tunnels in South African gold mines are developed at depths down to 3 600 m below surface where the virgin rock stress approaches 100 MPa and, on occasions, through rock where the field stresses exceed 150 MPa. In addition, many tunnels are subjected to increases in field stress of over 50 MPa during their useful lifetime. As a consequence, the walls of most tunnels are fractured causing the rock to dilate into the tunnel. Quantitative data on the extent of this fractured zone are presented. The function of support in these circumstances is to reinforce and maintain the integrity of the fractured rock. In 80 per cent of the 800 km of tunnels developed annually, the support methods used are capable of maintaining the stability of the tunnels. However, the remaining 20 per cent of tunnels is subjected to severer conditions where dilation in excess of 250 mm occurs and/or where the probability of strong seismic ground motion is high. In these tunnels, additional support is required. The type and pattern of support for both normal and severe conditions is described. In spite of the improved support used, damage to tunnels may occur. To minimize this damage, the concept of a rock reinforcing tendon that will yield and do work, when subjected to quasi-static or rapid deformation, has been put forward. Specifications for such a tendon are presented and the development of certain yielding tendons are described.

"Given the properties, locations and quantities of material to be hauled and the dump locations and capacities, the designer wishes to select the type and number of trucks and loading equipment required. Accordingly, software is being developed to assist in creation of the equipment, material and road network data bases, in selection of equipment, materials and road networks from these data bases, and in evaluation of the expected productivities both in a rapid, non-interactive, approximate fashion and a more detailed interactive fashion which permits the user to act as superintendent, if he so chooses. The basic technology has been developed and applied to an open-pit copper mine and is being refined and generalized for oil sands and coal mining applications.BackgroundA set of mathematical and interactive computer models are under development to aid in the selection of equipment and operating policies for an open-pit oil sands mine being planned by Canstar Oil Sands Ltd. This paper describes the computer models being developed of truck haulage systems. Although the interactive truck haulage model is based primarily on a model developed by the National Research Council in collaboration with Glenayre Electronics Ltd. of North Vancouver and Lornex Mines Limited(2).(3l, substantial changes and improvements are being incorporated to greatly increase its generality re equipment types, road network characteristics, dispatching and supervisory policies, etc. Although this paper is principally devoted to the truck haulage model, discussion is included concerning its interactions with other models."

THE object of this paper is to, describe the several necessary characteristics of the zinc-retorting charge and to show how by certain improved methods; the large excess of coal, over that theoretically required, can be reduced, thereby effecting an increase in the smelting capacity of a retort plant as well as other economies. In the Southwestern zinc works a charge of roasted zinc ore with a side mixture of carbonates and silicates, analyzing on the average 50 per cent. Zn, is mixed with 55 or more per cent. of its weight of a mixture of coal and coke analyzing 60 to 70 per cent. fixed carbon. . The ore is of varying fineness and the coal and coke are usually crushed in a semi-moist condition through a 3/8 -in. screen. With ores of a slaggy nature, this coal proportion is increased, sometimes to as much as 100 per cent. of, the weight of the ore. With carbonate ores, or where anthracite screenings with higher carbon content are cheap enough, the percentage of reducing agent is cut to 45 per cent. or even somewhat lower. The average charge per retort for a monthly run of a plant on ore, as distinguished from retorts on blue-powder, ladle-skimmings and other between-products, runs from 60 to 66 lb., with a mean of 63 lb. for the Southwest with standard retorts of 8 ½ -in. inside diameter and 50 in. long inside, using roasted sulphide ores. Conditions will change these figures, but 40 lb. of ore per cubic foot of retort space is, I believe, an average in the better-operated plants. Since the rise in. the price of spelter, the tendency has been to overcharge. To remove the slag that is formed when retorts are overcharged, extra men are put on to "gum-chisel" the retorts to prevent "set" furnaces and "butchered, retorts." Taking the above conditions as premises, we find that from four to six times the amount of coal necessary for the reduction is used, as is evidenced by the fact that the residues analyze as high as 35 per cent, fixed carbon. There are good reasons why this excess of fixed carbon must be used and perhaps these can be best explained by a description of the metallurgical requisites of a zinc charge. I REGRET that I am unable to present this subject in definite form and detail. All I shall attempt at this meeting is to lay before you some curious facts, the bearings and explanations of which must be reserved for future consideration. I hope before the next meeting to have carried experiments far enough to furnish a more important contribution to the science of iron metallurgy. The Wickersham process consists in the introduction into the molten metal, as it runs from the furnace, of air from the hot blast. Mr. Samuel Wickersham is the originator of the plan, as applied in practice, although Mr. Martien had the idea a long time ago, and, I believe, .went to England about it. But at that time Mr. Bessemer was coming before the public with his invention, which engrossed the attention of iron-masters, and Mr. Martien accomplished nothing. The principal difficulty in our experiments at Dunbar was to get a practicable runner or trough, through which the molten metal should pass, and in which it should be exposed to the action of the blast. The runner we used was ten feet long, and perforated on the sides to permit the entrance of the air-currents. When we used a cast-iron and fire-clay runner, the heat was so great that before we were more than half done with a run, the lower part of the runner was melted, and we had a magnificent Fourth of July display of fireworks until the blast was shut off. We had to abandon fire clay. The runner with which we have had the best success ,is made of wrought-iron tubes, 2 1/2 inches in diameter, attached to a wrought-iron frame, and lined with a mixture of crushed conglomerate (quartz) and a little fire clay to give it cohesion. The wrought-iron shell curves inward over the upper edges, so as to catch and throw back into the current the flying sparks and particles of metal thrown out by ebullition. With this we have been able to run 12 to 14 tons at a heat with great ease. Mr. Wickersham has since prepared this material (pounded quartz) into a shaped brick or tile, with the necessary perforations for the passage of the air, which promises to answer every requirement for steady working. When times are tough in the mineral industry û as they have been for some time û typical responses by mining companies are to cut costs and/ or increase production. The latter is seen to spread fixed costs, thereby also reducing unit costs per tonne mined. However, most mineral deposits respond to increased production rates by lowering ore grades, so the reduction in cost per tonne of ore does not necessarily result in a reduced cost per unit of metal produced. The authorsÆ experience is that this process often leads to a mine plan that is a long way from optimal. Producing to the point where marginal cost equals marginal revenue may work well in a manufacturing operation, but it is not necessarily the best strategy for a mining company with a depleting resource. Variations in tonnage and grade with depth, ore reserve optimism and a variety of other factors conspire to produce variations in production rates and grade that often result in suboptimal outcomes and potential mine failure. Added to this is the focus of industry analysts and senior corporate management on such measures as unit costs and ounces in reserves. This is perceived to have the perverse effect of driving the share price down when strategies are adopted that actually improve the value of the mining operation, and vice versa! Many mine failures can be prevented by a close examination of the tonnage grade curve and an understanding of how margins, net cash flows and resulting business risk change with cut-off grades and rates of production. A few relatively simple analyses early in the evaluation of a project can demonstrate the tradeoffs between the main decision parameters, leading to right-sizing of the operation. Once major commitments to major capital items have been made, and reserves have been publicly reported, optimisation of the operation becomes much more difficult than if it had been done earlier. Such investigations can also identify the upside potential and downside risks associated with factors outside the companyÆs control. Many strategies that may enhance value in the good times significantly increase the downside risk in the bad times. What is often called risk analysis typically looks at superficial issues, and does not evaluate the major factors leading to the potential for financial disaster. This paper illustrates some of these major risks, and demonstrates how they may be fully evaluated so that corporate decision makers can make fully informed decisions that take account of the real risks.

The duration of acid mine drainage flowing out of underground mines is important in the design of watershed restoration and abandoned mine land reclamation projects. People conducting land reclamation projects usually employ remediation strategies once (reshaping land, revegetating soils, and installing water treatment) with the hope that these methods will adequately improve water quality for a long time, with little planning for future changes. An understanding of changing acid water conditions from underground mines over time will help in designing efficient and cost-effective treatment methods. Past studies have reported that acid water flows from underground mines for hundreds of years with little change, while others state that poor drainage quality may last only 20 to 40 years. Several factors are important in making a prediction of drainage quality over time, such as inundation or flooding history, coal seam characteristics (primarily sulfur content), residence time of water in the mine, time since mine closure, mining method and amount of coal remaining, collapse of roof and other disturbances within the mine, and subsequent nearby surface mining. More than 150 above-drainage (those not flooded after abandonment) underground mine discharges were located and sampled during 1968 in northern West Virginia, and we revisited 44 of those sites in 2000 and measured water flow, pH, acidity, alkalinity, Fe, Al, and sulfate. All 44 discharges were from mines in the Pittsburgh and Upper Freeport coal seams, and both seams have been extensively mined in this area during the past 70 years. We sampled during the same months (June to October) as were sampled in 1968, and we found no significant difference in flows between 1968 and 2000. Therefore, we felt that the water quality data could be compared and that the data represented real changes in pollutant concentrations. There were significant water quality differences between year and coal seam, but no differences between disturbed and undisturbed mines. Average acidity declined 79 per cent between 1968 and 2000 in Pittsburgh mines (from 3342 to 702 mg/L), and 56 per cent in Upper Freeport mines (from 1189 to 519 mg/L). Iron decreased an average of about 80 per cent across all sites (from an average of 345 to 69 mg/L), while sulfate decreased between 50 to 75 per cent. Pittsburgh seam discharge water was much worse in 1968 than Upper Freeport seam water. Twenty of our 44 sites had water quality information during 1980, which served as a midpoint to assess the slope of the decline in acidity and metal concentrations. Almost all parameters showed an exponential rate of decline in acidity, iron, and sulfate.

MORE men are killed and injured in the metal mines of the United States from falls of rock and ore than from any other cause. Dan Harrington, of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, recently stated that "falls of men and material continue to take about 50 per cent of the lives annually lost in our mines (coal or metal) and this kind of accident is now and has been one of the most difficult to prevent." The fact that comparatively little has recently been written on this important subject for the benefit of the metal miner is the incentive for the present paper. Little will be said that will be new, but I hope to place fresh emphasis on certain well-known&apos; principles&apos; and to reiterate and stress previously stated rules so that the average experienced miner, as well as his buddy who may not be so experienced,&apos; will sit up and take notice. It is not within the scope of this paper to discuss mining methods from the standpoint of safety and the prevention of accidents from falls of rock. It is up to the mine management to select the system of mining best suited to the character of the ore deposit and its wall conditions. "Narrow tabular platinum group element deposits in the Bushveld Complex of South Africa are typically evaluated by diamond core drilling from surface. Several short deflections are drilled from each mother hole in order to obtain multiple intersections at a close spacing (less than 1 m). Examination of the intersections from deflection drilling revealed the importance of these deflections in understanding the representivity of the borehole, obtaining an estimate of the nugget effect, and mitigating the undesirable effect of the high grade variability at the ultra-short range that is a characteristic of these deposits. The use of deflections in estimation was investigated by means of a number of techniques and scenarios in order to find the most appropriate way to use them in an estimate. A significantly improved level of confidence was gained from using multiple close-spaced intersections rather than a single borehole intersection. IntroductionThe Upper Group 2 chromitite layer (UG2 or UG2 Reef) is known for its remarkable geological continuity, being traced almost uninterrupted for tens of kilometres. However, what is often less well emphasized is the high variability in platinum group element (PGE) grade and thickness (and therefore PGE content) and internal reef stratigraphy over very short distances (several metres or even tens of centimetres).This paper examines the application of short drill-hole deflections in evaluating UG2 PGE mineral resources at Marikana in the western Bushveld Complex of South Africa."

The first step in achieving a rationalization of Canada&apos;s crazy patch-work quilt of mining taxes and policies was achieved with the release last November of a major federal-provincial report on the taxation of the Canadian mining industry. The Report, prepared by a group of federal and provincial civil servants, sets out a concise and informative discussion of the major taxation and incentive issues facing the mining industry, and puts forward major recommendations for more rational and moderate taxation policies. It will be considered by federal and provincial Finance and Resource Ministers for possible action by the respective governments. The Report was prepared in response to a directive from the federal and provincial First Ministers in February 1978 to review the federal and provincial taxation of the resource areas. Although the Report is more successful in identifying problems rather than concrete solutions, and reflects some continuing differences of opinion between the governments involved, it does represent an important first step in a comprehensive review of our resource tax policies. This article summarizes the Report, which is some sixty pages in length. Although a detailed discussion of it is beyond the scope of this article, the report itself is recommended reading for those concerned about the current state of the Canadian mining industry.

New Brunswick's varied geology is reflected not only by the diversity of industrial rock and mineral resources presently under development but also in several promising exploration and potential development opportunities. The province also hosts several industrial rock and mineral processing facilities, each with established technologies ensuring high-quality products and each with sufficient flexibility to supply customized products for various specialized niche markets. With the imminent availability of natural gas to parts of the province, the prospects for additional value-added processing and re-examination of known, yet presently undeveloped deposits, appear excellent. These variables coupled with the province's advantageous geographical location, highlighting tidewater access to global markets and within one day's trucking distance to a regional market of several million people, guarantee prompt delivery of high-quality products at competitive prices.

The use of photogrammetry has greatly increased the accuracy of 3D mapping underground. However, this has not reduced the need or desire for geologists to produce plans and sections showing an interpretation of the mapped geology. At the Waihi Underground Gold Mine, a hybrid solution has been developed that utilises the accuracy of photogrammetry and mapping onto face photos with the CAD-based Deswik.MappingTM functions to create plan and section maps. These have the benefit of looking like traditional paper maps but are more spatially accurate and richly attributed with metadata that can be filtered and exported to downstream processes. Deswik.MappingTM is a tablet-based solution that allows the geologist to map digitally with a stylus. Automation is utilised for the updating of survey as-builts, approved designs, drill holes, geological mapping, vein interpretations and mine work areas, reducing the requirement to print out maps at various locations and scales. Having 3D mine software on a tablet device provides a wealth of features not available when using paper: scaling is a problem of the past; information can be turned on and off; features can be viewed in 3D; and measurements between points of interest can be calculated in 3D space, for example, between vein wireframes and drill hole sample information. A suite of custom scripts has been developed that take the spatially accurate, registered and attributed polyline data from photogrammetry scans and converts them to a geological mapping legend with vein textures, structural information, and lithological boundaries. These 3D maps can be plotted in plan or section view and satisfy the requirements of the most ardent paper map supporter.

THE object of this paper is to present a brief summary of the dust control system in use on the 3,825-foot level at the jaw crusher station, Lake Shore mine. During the years 1936 and 1937, dust survey reports were presented to the management showing that high dust concentrations were being created during operating periods. At that time, however, this crusher was running only an hour or so each shift, and it was felt that no large capital expenditure for dust control equipment could be justified. In order to afford some protection to the operators, a number of respirators then on the market were .tested and the &apos;Comfo&apos; respirator was adopted for use by the crusher-men. In 1938 this crusher began to handle a large share of the total mine tonnage and the hours of operation were increased. Further dust sampling showed increased dustiness with the longer operating time. It was also realized that the operators suffered considerable inconvenience if they wore their respirators throughout the shift. If the respirators were not worn, then dangerous amounts of dust were being inhaled. The fact that the crusher station was situated on the 3,825-foot level limited the means that could be employed to eliminate the dust hazard. At that rime there was not available the 5,000 c.f.m. of fresh air which would be required to sweep out or dilute0 the dust, and there was also no way of disposing of the contaminated air without passing it on for other men to breathe. Thus it became apparent that a self-contained dust disposal system would have to be installed.

Sedimentation of particles during the liquid metal processing of particulate metal-matrix composites can affect the homogeneity, and thereby the properties, of the cast product. A novel electrical probe has been developed to measure the in-situ volume fraction of ceramic particles in molten metal baths. Using this probe, sedimentation rates for 90 pm silicon carbide particles dispersed in molten aluminum A356 alloy were measured over a wide range of particle volume fraction, 0.05 to 0.3. The sedimentation rate was found to depend strongly on particle volume fraction; the time to clarify a 0.15 m depth increased from approximately 60 to 500 seconds as the volume fraction increased from 0.05 to 0.3. Measured sedimentation rates agree well with the predictions of a sedimentation model based on one-dimensional, two-phase flow theory in which the inter-phase drag function is derived from the momentum equation, utilizing the Richardson-Zaki Equation for sedimentation in aqueous systems. The implications for solidification are discussed.

President W. K. Dennison, Jr., called the final session of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute to order, and introduced H. A. Cornell, Portland Cement Association, Ft. Collins, Colorado. Mr. Cornell explained that the Portland Cement Association was not a sales organization, but is supported by the major manufacturers of portland cement. The research laboratories of the association are constantly endeavoring to improve the quality of cement, as well as promote new markets, new uses, and new ideas. The association works with engineers, contractors and universities, making available to them the results of their research. Mr. Cornell stated that numerous booklets and bulletins were available on request for any phase of construction with concrete. Mr. Cornell presented a film, "How to Make Quality Concrete," to the members of the Institute. D. W. Lyke, General Electric Apparatus Service Shop, Denver, Colorado, was introduced by President Dennison, who presented a film, "A-Hunting He Would Go." Following the film, Mr. Lyke stated that his firm was not confined to electrical equipment, but to all types of equipment, and asked the members to feel free to call for assistance at any time. These two films concluded the Manufacturer&apos;s Hour, and President Dennison opened the final business meeting of the session. Robert F. Bowie, of the Auditing Committee, read the Treasurer&apos;s Report, and complimented Mr. Whiteside on the commendable state in which the books were found. The Treasurer&apos;s Report is as follows:
