Gold has been demonstrated as a possible catalyst for oxidation reactions. Some evidence for a possible promotion effect of platinum has also been recorded. The influence of platinum as promoter for Au/?-Al2O3 prepared via anionic ion-exchange for the oxidation of glycerol was investigated in a batch reactor at 60°C. It is inferred that the addition of platinum reduces the catalytic activity and therate of deactivation, resulting in an overall higher final conversion of glycerol with increasing platinum loading. The addition of platinum to the catalyst favours the formation of the desired product, glyceric acid.

The influence of patten, geometry on assisted oil recovery for a particular dispIacement mechanism is the object of investigation in this paper. The displacement is assumed to be of unit mobility ratio and piston-like. Fluids are assumed incompressible and gravity and capillary effects are neglected. With these assumptions it is possible to calculate by analytical methods the quantities of interest to the reservoir engineer for a great variety of patterns. Specifically, this paper presents (1) very brieily, the methods and mathematical derivations required to obtain the results of engineering concern, and (2) typical results in the dorm of graphs or formulae that can be used readily without prior study of the methods. Results of this work provide checks for solutions obtained from programmed numerical techniques. They also reveal the effect of pattern geometry and, even though the assumptions of piston- like displacement and of unit mobility ratio are restrictive, they can nevertheless be used for rather crude but quick, cheap estimates. ,These estimates can be refined to account for non-unit mobility ratio and two-phase flow by correlating analytical results in the case M = 1 and the numerical results for non-piston, non-unit mobility ratio displacements. In an earlier paper1 it was also shown that from the knowledge of closed form solutions for unit mobility ratio, quantities called "scale factors" could be readily calculated, increasing considerably the flexibility of the numerical techniques. Many new closed farm solutions are given in this paper. INTRODUCTION BACKGROUND Pattern geometry is a major factor in making water-fIood recovery predictions. For this reason many numerical schemes have been devised to predict oil recovery in either regular patterns or arbitrary configurations. The numerical solutions, based on the method of finite difference approximation, are subject to errors often difficult to evaluate. An estimate of the error is possible by comparison with exact solutions. To provide a variety of checks on numerical solutions, a thorough study of the unit mobility ratio displacement process was undertaken. To calculate quantities of interest to the reservoir engineer (oil recovery, sweep efficiency, etc.), it is necessary to first know the pressure distribution in the pattern. Then analytical procedures are used to calculate, in order of increasing difficulty: injectivity, breakthrough areal sweep efficiency, normalized oil recovery and water-oil ratio as a function of normalized PV injected.

Laboratory-Scale Magnetohydrostatic Separator for High Resolution Density Analysis of Plastic and Other Wastes Recycling and reuse of different plastic wastes is still a current problem to solve for process engineers and it is true for seeking industrial applications as well as for smaller laboratory-scale, where a given waste sample, plastic or even metallic, has to be precisely separated into narrow density fractions to gain data for industrial design or for scientific research. The principle of magnetohydrostatic separators are known even there are industrial size machines but our primary aim was the development of a laboratory-scale separator for analysis of particles of densities up to 6 kg/L and sizes up to 8 mm. Main parts of the built experimental equipment are the ferrite core with two high power coils. The shape of the ferrite core at the two sides of the separator channel was specially designed to produce isodynamic magnetic field. In these places the ferrite core was constructed from laser cut ferrite sheets. The development of the high power electric supply for the two coils was a real challenge because the high voltage and current (400 V, 30 A) and because it had to be precisely regulated for being able to set discrete relative forces on the particles. Two separator channels were made from transparent plastic. The magnetic fluid is circulated by a centrifugal pump, fresh feed is supplied by a vibrated feeder and products can be taken by built in samplers. The velocity profile in the separator channel is measured by an ultrasonic Doppler velocity meter. Paper reports about the development and itself of the magnetohydrostatic separator and about some fundamental and applied laboratory experiments with different reference particles and wastes from used cars and electrical appliances.

A review of the literature reveals that methods for simulating the coupled behavior of size reduction and liberation are limited to binary mineral systems containing one composite particle class. The aim of this paper is to describe the development of a mathematical model to simulate such behavior for binary and ternary systems containing multiple classes of composite particles. A modified Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm and a finite difference Jacobian are used in conjunction with the developed model and a set of constrained equations to estimate all kinetic parameters. This estimation scheme is validated for a binary ore (sphalerite-dolomite) with five composite particle classes using experimental data.

With a view to characterising activated carbons with respect to their ability to adsorb gold from cyanide solutions, an attempt was made to establish correlations between the equilibrium capacity constant of the activated carbon for gold (k value) and five other parameters. These parameters were percentage ash content, iodine number, methylene blue value, surface area, and pH respectively. Twenty four different proprietary brand activated carbon products were examined, the correlations being established by means of linear regression analysis. It was shown that a significant correlation only existed between k and pH value. This was interpreted in terms of the presence of oxide complexes on the activated carbon surface. Further test specifications as developed at the Anglo American Research Laboratories are also outlined with a view to the selection of activated carbons suitable for use in' a carbon-in-pulp operation. Methods for assessing both the capacity and the kinetic response of carbons for gold adsorption are presented, while the measurement of attrition resistance, particle size distribution and moisture and solubles content is also outlined. The measurement of the capacity constant for gold adsorption together with attrition resistance are considered to be necessary in the initial selection of a suitable carbon.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Spokane Research Laboratory, studied technology and methods that could reduce accidents involving surface mining equipment that collides with other vehicles or workers, or drives over an unseen road edge. These accidents are partially attributed to the lack of full visibility around these large pieces of equipment. Blind areas can be extensive and this report presents plots of blind areas for five pieces of surface mining equipment. Several technologies designed for detecting obstacles in blind areas and providing a warning to the operator were evaluated on off-highway dump trucks. These proximity warning systems included radar, sonar, GPS, radio transceiver tags, and combinations of radar and cameras. A summary of test results is presented in this report, along with guidance on effective proximity warning technology, installation and maintenance considerations, and recommendations for effective implementation. This study found several commercially available systems that could effectively warn an equipment operator of an impending collision. Several new technologies also show promise for reducing these accidents. In most applications, it is recommended that sensor-based systems be combined with video cameras to provide important alarming functions along with an actual view of the blind area.

We developed a statistically based strategy for sampling the surficial material of mine-waste dumps for use in screening and prioritizing historic dumps on abandoned mine lands. This sampling strategy entails the collection of a representative composite sample from individual dumps and allows for regional or watershed-based assessments. One 30-inment dump-composite sample collected using this sampling strategy contains as much information, relative to average value, as 30 individual grab samples at 1/30 of the analytical cost.

Thirteen kinetic models that mathematically describe the flotation process have been statistically evaluated for the flotation of copper, lead and zinc ores. Comparisons have been made for a variety of circuits involving roughing, cleaning, scavenging and regrind followed by cleaning. Variations in collectors, frothers, depressants and activators have been considered. Based on the statistical criteria used for the evaluation, and the reagent, circuit and ore variations studied, the most reliable flotation models have been identified and subsequently used to characterize the metallurgical results.

Top outlet sediments from the National Geochemical Survey of Australia have been extracted by a partial extraction method for over 50 elements including gold. The partial extraction results from this low-density survey show discrete coherent anomalies for Au in the vicinity of many of AustraliaÆs known goldfields, and in the vicinity of some minor gold occurrences. In several instances catchment outlet anomalies for Au have been recorded from areas not known to contain significant economic gold. Several large economic goldfields are shown to not produce anomalies in catchment outlet samples. A survey of overbank samples in the Swan Avon catchment of Western Australia at double the sampling density shows that low level anomalies (>1 ppb) can be traced back to source using overbank sediments. Follow-up of one of the Au anomalies at Kent River in previously regarded non-auriferous terrain (western Albany-Fraser Belt) indicates a non-economic, but perhaps geochemically significant, Au anomaly with associated pathfinders including palladium. This may indicate that further exploration of the western part of Albany Fraser Belt for Au is warranted. The combination of catchment overbank samples and partial analysis technique has been shown to be effective at locating the source of gold anomalies from initial low-density continental and regional surveys.CITATION:Mann, A, Davidson, A and de Caritat, P, 2013. "A study was conducted to establish the effective heat transfer coefficient for a single molten droplet moving in a gaseous medium. Towards this objective, a series of quench experiments were performed on molten droplets of AA6061 aluminum generated with the Impulse Atomization technique (IAP). IAP is a single fluid atomization process capable of producing powders with a predictable mean particle size and a relatively tight standard deviation under controlled atmospheric conditions. Microstructure analysis of the atomized powder was used to establish the extent of pre-quench solidification. A mathematical model was then employed to correlate the Ranz-Marshall and Whitaker equations with the observed particle cooling behaviour. These equations were found to provide a reasonable estimation of the heat transfer conditions only when the variation in gas thermophysical properties across the boundary layer was accounted for in the model. This model formulation of droplet heat transfer has important implications with regards to active sprays and atomization processing operations IntroductionAn understanding of droplet cooling is important in atomization powder production. It is well understood that dendrite arm spacing is inversely proportional to cooling rate during solidificationl1l. Through modification of the heat transfer conditions during metal atomization, the microstructure of a powder maybe tailored to the end user. However, owing to the complexity of gas flow it is difficult to determine a heat transfer coefficient for a moving droplet. This difficulty is further compounded when complex jets and/or streams and their interactions are considered. To provide a base for these more complicated types of analyzes, two approaches have been employed to calculate the effective heat transfer conditions for a single droplet. In one approach, Megardis [ZJ developed a numerical model to investigate the heat transfer process of a free falling droplet undergoing laminar convective cooling. The effective heat transfer coefficient as a function of angular position was determined by numerically solving the fluid and energy equations for the system."

Technically based guidelines for managing rock related risks associated with strip mines in South African collieries are currently vague and are to a large extent based on experience and trial and error. To date, no mine specific or universal design charts exist within the South African industry. Quantification is done on a reactive basis i.e. following reported instabilities. The conditions under which, proactive tools to manage instabilities would be practically applicable are: The design of simple easy to use charts. Designing the charts for a target audience that is primarily production management. Well organized, logical set-up of the charts that will allow for easy future refinements. Allowing for variations in rock and soil properties within the charts that would account for colliery specific and region specific variability. The factors selected for in depth investigation that were deemed to have either individually or in combination, a primary influence on the stability of strip mines are (in no order of priority): Appropriate batter angles for ?soft? materials. Surcharge loading (spoils, dumps, topographical highs) on the highwall side. Influence of the thickness of stratification on stability. Influence of moisture content on stability. Influence of the changes to the coal seam dip angle on stability. Influence of persistent ?strip long axis? parallel faults/joints on stability. Spoil stability for variations in material type. This paper provides details of the work undertaken, using principally numerical modelling techniques, to produce design charts that will allow for proactive management of rock-related instabilities on strip mines.

The approximate methods which are now in use for calculating oil displacement from reservoirs by gas-cycling or gravity-drainage at constant gas pressure, or by water flooding, make use of fundamental relationships derived by Leverett' and Buckley and Leverett.2 The mathematical equations needed are derived by applying Darcy's law to the flowing phases, and by material balance considerations. ln general, any treatment of this type gives. for any particular exploitation time considered, a plot of oil saturation against distance in the reser-voir. The oil recovery must then be obtained by integrating in some manner the area under the plot. A useful analytical method has been derived for computing the average saturation, and hence the oil recovery. Use of this method simplifies the calculations because it makes unnecessary any numerical integrations. and even the saturation distribution plots are not needed. A further advantage of the method is that knowledge of the relative permeabilities is required only for a limited and intermediate saturation range. In both the Buckley and Leverett method and the method discussed here, a linear sand section is assumed, and in the case of gas drive the gas pressure is assumed sufficiently constant both with respect to reservoir position and time so that changes in gas density. solubility, or reservoir volume factor are negligiklle. Thus, the exploitation contemplates oil displacement as by an immiscible phase. Examples are given to illustrate how the new method can be used. INTRODUCTION AND THEORETICAL BACKGROUND This paper treats a simplified method for computing oil recovery when the oil is displaced, from the reservoir sand by a fluid which, within the limits of accuracy desired, can be assumed to be incompressible and immiscible with the oil. The method makes use of two basic relations originally developed for the case of water displacing oil. However, the case of gas displacing oil saturated with gas at a constant (or nearly constant) pressure may also be considered a displacement by an immiscible fluid. This is possible for the reason that the concentration of the gas in the oil never changes if tile pressure is fixed. consequently, any additional free gas must remain undissolved in the oil, and so must act essentially as an immiscible phase. For convenience, the cape of gas drive will be considered first. Both of the two basic relations needed refer to a linear reservoir, or one which may be somewhat idealized so that a constant cross-section is exposed to fluid flow. Further, the displacing phase is injected at one end, or face; of the reservoir, while the produced fluids are understood to emerge at one point only. which is the opposite face of the reservoir. As indicated in Fig. 1, the reservoir may he inclined by some angle 8. The first of the required equations may be derived by applying Darcy's law to both displacing and displaced phases, and subtracting the two equations. Two equations are compared for calculating imbibi-tion rates of water into porous media. A linear relation was found to apply when the square of the volume of water imbibed was plotted against time for water imbibing in natural rock materials. The effect of adsorbed organic materials on surface wettability was determined from measurements of rate of imbibition, water saturation and water permeability. INTRODUCTION An understanding of the mechanisms by which water displaces oil from porous media requires an understanding of the role of capillary forces in the displacement process. The capillary forces are determined by properties of the water-oil-solid surfaces. Consequently, some measure of the surface properties of reservoir rocks is necessary if displacement behavior in oil reservoirs is to be predicted from laboratory measurements. Several experimental procedures have been proposed to assign quantitative wettability indexes to reservoir rock surfaces. The most recent of these proposals are those of Bobek, Mattox and Denekas' and Amott.' These indexes are designed to show a continuous variation from the preferential oil-wet to the preferential water-wet systems. They require measuring some property of the rock which is a function of surface wettability. The quantities are measured on unaltered core material and compared with values obtained for known oil-wet and water-wet extremes on the same material. These methods are useful but are semi-empirical in nature. They have the disadvantage that the measured quantities may be functions of other variables in addition to surface wettability. Some understanding of the behavior of water-oil-rock systems may be obtained from studies of the simpler water-air-rock systems. Surfaces of a given wettability are more easily maintained for the latter. Also, certain approximations can be made for the flow of water and air which are not justified for water-oil flow. The theoretical and experimental work discussed in this paper is part of a study of the role of capillarity in the dynamic displacement of air by water. The expec- tation is that observations for the water-air system will lead to generalizations which are applicable to water-oil systems. THEORY Imbibition is defined as that process by which one fluid displaces another from a porous medium as a result of capillary forces only. Differential equations have been derived to describe the displacement of oil by water during imbibition, but these equations have not been solved.".' With certain assumptions, however, solutions are possible for water-air imbibition.

The process of liquid?liquid extraction of gold from chloride solution is complicated by the presence of many variables acting simultaneously in an unknown non-linear fashion for the determination of the final extraction efficiency. In practice, it is quite difficult to develop a model for predicting various properties of such process. Therefore, an alternative approach based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is considered to assist in the simulation process. Artificial neural networks (ANN) are powerful tools that can be used to model and investigate various highly complex and non-linear phenomena. This paper presents application of Multi-Layer Perceptions (MLP) to construct relationship that will be employed to develop a quantitative method for the estimation of the extraction efficiency as a function of hydrodynamical parameters such as stirrer speed, [AuCl4]- and DBC concentration, organic and aqueous flow rate. The model is shown to be in excellent agreement with the experimental data (R2 value for training and testing data was 0.9992 and 0.9915 respectively). Therefore, it can be used to optimize the parameters of liquid?liquid gold extraction with dibutyl carbitol (DBC).

Geomembrane systems and associated geosynthetics such as geotextiles, geonets, geogrids and geocomposites have been used in precious metal heap leach and tailings facilities for many years. Geomembranes have been used in the heap leach process in pad design and solution recovery ponds as well as associated collection channels as the primary liquid barrier to contain and collect metal bearing leach solution. Geomembrane systems offer an effective, low cost alternative to other containment methods such as compacted low permeability soils, asphalt or concrete. In the 19BO's, rigid High Density Polyethylene (HOPE) liners were used to a great extent with a gradual transition to the use of the more flexible Very Low Density Polyethylene (VLDPE) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). These three geomembrane systems have been used successfully in precious metal heap leach solution containment. Predominant material thicknesses have been 30 and 40 mil for PVC, 40 and 60 mil for HOPE and VLDPE. Variants in recent years have included roughened HDPE and VLDPE to provide higher surface friction characteristics, as well as newer polymer materials such as polypropylene. In addition to providing an economical method for providing enhanced solution recovery, geomernbranes are also providing the primary liquid barrier for prevention of groundwater contamination. Because heap leach solution chemical components and dissolved metal constituents are classified as toxic substances, they are subject to environmental regulation. Many regulatory agencies are still developing guidelines for heap leach pad design, however a geomernbrane liner system is often used as a single liner or in conjunction with other materials to form composite double or even triple lined systems. "Other" materials can include alternate layers of drainage aggregate, geotextiles, clay layers and other geomembrane or geocomposite layers.

In high pressure die casting processes, proper control of temperature die yields a high casting production rate and superior quality components, Die temperature is usually influenced by various die design and process parameters such as size and location of intemal water cooling lines, flow rates of cooling lines, and pouring temperature of molten metal. Among them, the cooling water flow rate plays a major role in controlling thermal pattern of the die_ In order to develop an effective control strategy, data of local die temperature must be collected and analyzed, In this study, a PC-based data acquisition and control system (DACS) for die temperature control has been designed, and established, The developed DACS has three input channels for temperature signals and one input channel for water flow rate signals, as well as one output channel for a water pump, and is capable of displaying data in both curve format and value format. Implementation of the DACS in a laboratory setup has also been attempted, It should be pointed out that more advanced control mechanisms can be potentially integrated into this system in future,

In view of the good results which have followed the wide discussion of the rail-specifications of the American Section of the International Association for Testing Materials, I now offer for discussion its specifications for steel forgings and steel castings. It is not necessary to emphasize the importance of reaching definite conclusions on these subjects. Engineers, consumers and manufacturers are alike interested in securing good, reliable, uniform steel. In this connection, I would call particular attention to the important paper read by Mr. C. H. Ridsdale, last September, before the Iron and Steel Institute, as bearing on them; and, for convenience of reference in the discussion, I append the Table in Section VI. of his paper, on a Manifestations, Classified mider Heads of Faults of Different Types. appearing after Treatment by the User, for Tracing their Probable Source."* The discussion of these specifications will be practically a continuation of our former discussions on "The Physics of Steel." We have passed through a period in which the chemical composition of steel has received the greatest prominence; but failures of steel forgings and castings of the best chemical composition have shown that we could not control the quality of the finished product by the chemical composition alone. It must be admitted that differences in the physical properties of the steel, greater than those due to small variations in composition,are produced by heat-treatment, both in connection with the mechanical work of forging and otherwise. The present result is a strong tendency to deem the heat-treatment more important than the chemical composition. I think the mean course is the safer. The Kalahari Manganese Deposit in South Africa accounts for 80 per cent of the worldÆs land-based mineable Mn reserves. Although the ores are primarily mined for export, South Africa is the worldÆs third largest producer of ferromanganese and ferrosilicomanganese alloy, both of which are derived from the smelting of these ores. Mineralogical analysis has traditionally been forsaken for bulk chemical assaying in quality control of smelter feeds, principally because quantitative data could not be easily produced. Yet, mineralogy plays a vital role in determining smelting behaviour, which in turn has economic implications when aspects such as energy and reductant consumption are considered. Smelting is an endothermic process, and the amount of energy input required is dependent on the minerals present in the ore, as well as their relative proportions. Further, knowing the bulk Mn oxidation state in the ores allows for calculation of the amount of oxygen that must be driven off to produce alloy, and hence the amount of reductant required. Additionally, certain minerals can be correlated with potentially deleterious elements, so that ore mineralogy can indicate penalty element distribution. Mineral abundance analysis was conducted on ores from the Kalahari Manganese Deposit using quantitative X-ray powder diffraction. Rietveld refinement using a fundamental parameters approach was applied to micronised ore samples. The mineral percentages obtained were validated using mineral chemical data together with bulk major element data derived from ICP-OES. Bulk oxidation state partitioning was then carried out knowing the Mn valence in the minerals. The results show potential for implementation of the proposed method on a smelting plant, where ore blending could be then implemented to achieve consistent feed compositions to smelters. Selective mining could also be undertaken to obtain desirable ore compositions for domestic or international markets.

The publication of the Lerchs Grossmann paper in 1965 outlining a threedimensional graph algorithm for ultimate pit definition set the standard for the mining industry regarding pit optimization. Although the algorithm provides a solution from a static standpoint (i.e., assumes instantaneous mining), it is widely used for commercial packages to generate ultimate pit limits and intermediate phases. However, the solutions delivered are presented in canned reports lacking connection to the original data, which prevents further data analysis and extended reporting. The approach presented in this paper attempts to overcome such barriers by performing openpit optimization through databases. An adaptation of the Lerchs Grossmann graph algorithm is used to generate nodes, arcs and tree structures in customized tables to determine the maximum closure of a graph.
