The quantity of post-consumer ‘waste’ materials generated each year is rapidly increasing. These materials can contain significant quantities of critical metals and present an environmental challenge if landfilled. The ISACYCLE™ technology is a proven solution for the processing of these materials. In the ISACYCLE™ furnace, the post-consumer materials are processed to recover energy along with any contained critical metals, in the form of a base metal alloy or matte. In addition, a clean aggregate (slag) is generated, which has the potential to be used for a range of applications in the construction industry. This slag is commonly based on a fayalite slag but is modified to manage the complex feed. This paper will review the fayalite slag system and the theoretical modifications required for treating urban wastes. Slags from an ISACYCLE™ furnace processing urban wastes have been sampled and characterised. The chemistry of these samples will be reviewed and compared to the expected theoretical modifications required.

The applicability of four empirical strength criteria for rock masses, namely, Hoek and Brown, Bieniawski - Yudhbir et al., Ramamurthy - Arora and Johnston - Sheorey et al. has been tested against the triaxial test data for jointed plaster of Paris of Arora. The following modified Bieniawski criterion shows best agreement with the triaxial test data for jointed plaster of Paris: 611=1+B(63)O.825 acm 6cm where a1= axial compressive stress at failure, MPa; a3 = confining pressure, MPa; acm = uniaxial compressive strength of jointed plaster of Paris, MPa; and B = - 3.988 + 9.674 (aim ) -0.185 The modified Bieniawski strength criterion can be used to estimate the strength of a coal pillar, based on a knowledge of stress distribution in it.

As aircraft age, the extent of interactions between fatigue and other damage mechanisms, such as corrosion and fretting, increases. At present, however, there is no generally accepted methodology within the Aircraft Structural Integrity Program (ASIP) framework to account for the effects of these interactions on life and the residual strength of aging aircraft components. A comprehensive program is being carried out by the National Research Council Canada in collaboration with Analytical Processes/Engineered Solutions, using the Holistic Structural Integrity Process (HOLSIP) to address time and cyclic load issues. This approach predicts the evolution of a discontinuity state in a material from production to retirement. This paper summarizes the results of a study on the 2024-T3 aluminium alloy in different forms (clad and unclad), thickness, and specimen geometry. This study consisted of identifying the microstructural features associated with crack nucleation sites and relating them to the testing parameters and fatigue life. Several coupons were fabricated and fatigue-tested. The fracture surfaces were carefully examined, and the physical characteristics of the microstructural features found near the crack nucleation sites were analyzed. Effect of stress level, loading direction, coupon geometry and surface condition on the number of crack nucleation sites, and fracture origin size has been discussed. Four distinctive mechanisms were found to be responsible for crack nucleation: for unclad materials constituent particles, oxide residue, surface irregularities and for clad samples the clad layer was the sole fracture origin.

Colombia is an example of a nation where mining makes a significant contribution to local and national economies. Due to the abundant resources present in the ground, there are good prospects for further development. However, the impacts of mining projects can include reduced access to good quality freshwater for other economic activities and/or biodiversity preservation (Ossa et al., 2018). As well as the water management challenges common to all mining regions globally, Colombia has particular challenges associated with its biophysical and socio-political traits. Land use change in many regions is dynamic including rapid development of agriculture and the development and abandonment of small scale mines. The value of ecosystem services provided by prospective mining regions also creates challenges in particular with regard to the páramos, the headwater wetlands from which about 70% of Colombia’s water supply has originated (Cleef 1981). Colombia also has particular challenges related to strong preconceptions about mining and its impacts on water. On the one hand, there is recognition that new large-scale mines are important for Colombia’s economy; on the other, there is deep distrust of the sector’s ability to operate with minimal adverse impacts (Gutiérrez-Gómez, 2017). Hence, any impact assessment is likely to face high levels of scepticism and scrutiny. Summarising the work of McIntyre et al. (2018), this abstract proposes a framework for assessing and communicating risks to regional water resources arising from the impacts of mines. The framework outputs aim to provide government and other stakeholder groups the scientific evidence needed to inform their viewpoints about mining development in the selected region, and a baseline from which to design a program of priority scientific research. In June 2005 the Minerals Council of Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Australian Government which states an intention ?for mining companies and government to work together with Indigenous people to build sustainable, prosperous communities in which individuals can create and take up social, employment and business opportunities in mining regions?. Implementation of the MoU has begun with demonstration sites established across Australia. All sites are using a Regional Partnership Agreement (RPA) model as a framework for enabling local people to find local solutions to local issues in partnership with mining companies, governments and Indigenous communities. Mining and resources companies can provide important input into regional economic development and capacity building by working through local partnerships. Company benefits include gaining a social licence to operate, access to a reliable skilled workforce, better longterm relationships with Indigenous communities and sustainable regional communities. All levels of government, Australian, State and Local, are working collaboratively to address unemployment and other issues in remote Indigenous communities. The Australian Government has adopted RPAs as one mechanism for implementing its whole-of-government approach to Indigenous affairs. This leading edge work is unique to Australia and the model has applications and significant learning for other countries and industries.

With the consolidation of the copper industry in the second half of the 20th century resulting in fewer plants treating ever increasing quantities and qualities of feed, the enormous flexibility of the Noranda Process gives it significant advantages over many competing technologies for the production of matte. Toll smelting, recycling, and secondaries treatment will become the cornerstone of profitable operations for all but the lucky few who have large captive mines associated with the smelter. Consequently, the ability to respond to changing market conditions without significant metallurgical or operational upsets will be of considerable commercial advantage. The inherent stability of this bath-smelting process leads to tight matte grade control, while the bath turbulence leads to rapid consumption of feeds with widely varying physical characteristics. Low capital and operating costs combined with a layout suitable for retrofit into existing converter aisles makes it a sensible choice for parts of the world still experiencing the aforementioned consolidation, which is essentially complete in fully developed economies such as the United States of America and the European Union. This paper will discuss features of the Noranda process compared with other technologies and its place in the future global copper production industry, which is set to become increasingly competitive and aggressive.

The area discussed herein, commonly known as the North Texas district, embraces the following 10 counties: Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita and Wilbarger. It is underlain by two major structural features. The northernmost portion of the district, including Cooke, Montague, northern Clay, Wichita, Wilbarger, Foard and Hardeman counties, is underlain by the system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift, which is parallel to and closely related to the Wichita-Amarillo uplift of Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle. While the presence of a great majority of the numerous oil fields of the area is traceable to this feature, the production in Archer, southwestern Clay and southeastern Baylor counties is due to the influence of what is known as the Cisco Arch (so called because of its influence on Cisco deposition), the axis of which extends in a northwest-southeast direction across Archer County. It has been impossible for the authors to isolate the statistics for production for each of the many small pools of this district, as such statistics are not kept by the operators except for the district as a whole, therefore Tables 1 and 2 are comparatively short. The net acid generation (NAG) pH method is an important analytical tool that supplements static and kinetic tests for assessment of the acid generation risk of rock samples. This method is useful because it is simple, rapid and cost-effective; it combines features of the static and kinetic tests; and it can be conducted at mine assay labs. The NAG pH test is particularly effective for operational testing programs used to classify, selectively handle, and route potentially acid-generating waste rock. The NAG pH procedure is based on a 24 hour oxidation of a pulverized rock sample with hydrogen peroxide and subsequent measurement of the sample's pH. If the NAG pH is below a critical value, determined empirically, then the sample has the potential to generate acid in the field. The critical NAG pH value is typically within the range of 3 to 4.5, but the exact relationship between NAG pH and potential acid generation should be determined individually for each mine site, based on comparison with results of acid base accounting, humidity cell tests, and mineralogical analyses. Calibration and use of the NAG test for predicting ARD risk at several mines are described in this paper.

The Blind Springs Hill pumice beds are located 5 miles southwest of Benton, California in the foothills between the Benton Mountain Range and Blind Springs Valley. The best exposures of the pumice are in an area 0.75 miles west of Blind Springs Hill. The pumice is Quaternary ejecta material which came from the rhyolitic volcanoes in the Glass Mountain-Volcanic Tablelands area of Mono County. The pumice beds occur in two distinct layers separated by an unconformity. The upper layer is 0 to 11 feet thick and consists of coarse subangular pumice fragments, some of which are over 1.75 inches in diameter. The lower bed is medium to coarse grained with subangular fragments up to 1.0 inch. The lower bed is 0 to 9 feet thick. Overburden at the Blind Springs Hill deposit varies from 0 to 15 feet. There are approximately 1 million cubic yards of material in the deposit that can be mined. The size distribution in the deposit is mostly fine with only 10.6% of the pumice fragments being over 0.5 inch in diameter, the minimum size needed for stone-wash or acid-wash applications. Suitability of pumice for the textile industry is quantified by standard 15-minute abrasion and absorption tests. In the Blind Springs Hill deposit, the plus 0.5 inch fraction has an abrasion loss of 33% which is too high for stone-wash application but it has an absorption capacity of 36% which makes it suitable for acid-wash applications in the textile industry. The abrasion and absorption properties of this deposit are within the range of those which have been measured for other pumice deposits within the United States.

BECAUSE it is necessary that the powders made for casting have a magistery of salt water, I wish now to teach you to prepare the salt that must form this magistery, for without it these powders would not have the toughness to hold themselves together when they are dry. In short, you take the quantity [119v] of salt that you need to prepare and put it in a rough pot, either baked or, if it suits you better, raw but well dried. This is completely covered with a lid or is luted with well- made moulding clay. Then it is encircled with brick ends at a distance of three dita, like a drying furnace. This space is filled with good charcoal; fire is applied and it is left to stand until all the charcoal is consumed by itself* Then you take that quantity of this burned or rather melted salt which you wish to use for moistening the clay and which you think can be dissolved in the water so that it wd remain very salty. It is boiled in a pot with water and then left to stand. After it has settled, your powder is moistened with it and used for moulding. When you see by testing it that the powder stands up as you wish, it is good. If not, give it some more of this water again and continue until you see that it holds enough. For without this magistery it would return to the dryness that it had before as a powder, and you could not use it without fear that it would fall from the Games. In this way this earth, either natural or artificial, is prepared and made ready, and it is used as the need occurs.

Due to safety-imposed constraints on clearances for mobile bulk handling equipment, it is necessary to optimally select a unit based on speed and size. The unit cannot be both large and fast. Since output is proportional to both size (or capacity) and speed, the combination must be carefully examined to maximize output. A simple graphical procedure and a calculus-based solution are presented to accomplish this. While the procedure applies to all mobile bulk handlers, as an example of the solution technique, attention is focused on shuttle cars. Background Major variables To fully define a bulk handling problem, the conditions, equipment, and activities must be characterized. The conditions and activities, when lumped together, are termed "encumbered space," since they "act to impede motion, as with a burden" (Lineberry, 1979). The insertion of mobile bulk handling equipment into what is already a difficult set of conditions and activities compounds the state of encumbrance, as limited space is competed for by many normal and life support systems. Long (1972) recognized the effects of design criteria, including road width, on haulage vehicle speed and, therefore, on production. Velocity-clearance curves Velocity-clearance curves are either available or can be constructed in the field. A preliminary set of curves for average conditions and activities is shown in Fig. 1, where clearances are only for the side of the vehicle (Lineberry and Adler, 1984). These curves set the safe speed limits for a vehicle operating at given clearances, under given conditions and activities. When feasible, velocity-clearance curves should be constructed through field measurement and observation. Curve construction should also consider haulway roughness, distances, and operator skill, as well as loading and dumping characteristics. It should be noted that haulage capacity determination is a total systems problem, not one just dependent on velocity and clearances. Production requirements and company capabilities also influence capacity determination.

"Under the auspices of World Federation of Engineering Organizations’ Committee on Engineering and the Environment (WFEO-CEE) and Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) Task Force on Sustainability and Mining (TFSM), and aimed at helping raise global understanding on and promote capacity building of risk management, this paper presents a framework and prototype of toolbox or knowledge warehouse for facilitating the application of risk analysis, mitigation and management techniques (RAMT) in the mining and minerals sector. The conception, design and implementation of the intended system of knowledge warehouse of risk analysis, mitigation and management techniques (KWoRAMT) are outlined. The system architecture of KWoRAMT is based on a browser/server (B/S) structured platform with web oriented interfaces and composed of data base, knowledge warehouse, searching mechanisms, and risk assessment methodologies. The knowledge sources for KWoRAMT will come from the TFSM expertise and Internet, including laws and regulations, codes of practice, standards, guidelines and best practices. The functions and outcomes of KWoRAMT consist of guided navigations with web links, categorized risk tools, annotated best practices with cases, and integrated risk approaches and solutions based on typical risk methods. Risk categories include those impacting on mine safety, mine occupational health, and mine community environment throughout the whole of mine life cycle from exploration, construction, and exploitation and processing to post-mining closure. Mining associated hazards will be identified and linked by vulnerability onto risk receptors through pathways. Risk management techniques for assessing impacts and consequences of mining induced hazards will be categorized with their pros and cons or strengths and weaknesses. Best practices and significant cases including experiences and lessons with problems, solutions, and recommendations on how solutions would be derived will be illustrated. Integrated risk approaches based upon typical methods will be developed for alternatives and actions."

In feasibility studies the choice of optimum cut-off grade is typically based on an evaluation of tonnage grade curves and manual design of stopes at one or two cut-off grades. In the industry these stope designs are usually based on break-even cut-off grades, but there is little consensus on what cost and price assumptions ought to be included. A new tool for automated stope design has been developed that generates sets of stope shapes for a nominated range of cut-off grades, or depending on the nature of the mineralisation, cut-off values based on net smelter return calculations in the block model. The stope design procedure includes constraints in stope and pillar geometry for the selected mining method and can be used to evaluate sublevel interval and sensitivities to other design parameters in the specific geological and geotechnical environment. These ænested stopesÆ are analogous to ænested pitsÆ in open cut design, and can be used as a key input in the æhill of valueÆ methodology for the evaluation of the optimum cut-off grade in underground design. The results of many consulting studies indicate that a break-even cut-off grade will not be the optimum cut-off grade. A particular benefit of the new stope design tool is that the design rules used to establish stope shapes in the feasibility study can then be used in mine production, in an optimal and repeatable method. This methodology is being advanced in the AMIRA P884 PRIMO project, which is a new research collaboration coordinated by AMIRA International. The project has brought together active research groups in Australia and Canada, with the goal of developing a flexible framework and set of software tools for optimisation in underground mine design.

During the last half century a great amount of ingenuity and energy has been devoted to the invention of appliances for the recovery of valuable minerals from very fine sands and slimes. The reason for this is that in almost every dressing plant the greatest losses of values, considered relatively as well as absolutely, occur in the treatment of slimes. The natural aim of mill operators to minimize these losses has in recent years received another impetus, from the fact that the gradually diminishing occurrence of high-grade ores makes a more intense recovery of values from existing resources absolutely necessary for profitable operation. The results of such attempts are found in the appearance of a great number of machines and appliances which make it profitable to-day to rework old clumps, containing the tailings of older processes. A constantly growing difficulty of obtaining skilled labor and the increase in wages made it prohibitory to employ those types of machines which required much attention, and in the middle of the ninieteenth century the various concentrating tables of the percussion type, which automatically discharge their products, began to take the place of the intermittent tables, on which, when the bed had reached a certain thickness, operation had to be stopped in order to allow the skimming by hand of the separate layers formed on the table. In the course of years, two general types of machines evolved for the treatment of fine sands arid slimes: The so-called concentrators and vanners, on the one hand, and the buddles and round tables on the other.' "The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the causes and methods for control of cutter roof failure in underground coal mines. This hazardous ground control problem exposes miners to the danger of falling roof rock and frequently results in massive roof failure. This report outlines the probable causes of cutter roof failure, which are proposed based on field investigations, numerical model analysis, and in-mine observations. Traditional methods of control are presented, as well as innovative methods based on mining concepts developed during earlier years of coal mining history. The report can be useful to a mine operator for assessing the causes of cutter roof failure on a site-by-site basis and for predicting the probability of its occurrence. A process is presented for selecting an optimum control method that includes both traditional and innovative control techniques for each of the various causes of cutter roof failure. INTRODUCTIONGround control research conducted by the Bureau of Mines is designed to develop technology that will aid in reducing the frequency of accidents associated with poor ground control conditions. Cutter roof failure often poses a safety hazard to miners and causes delays in production while massive roof falls are cleaned up and unstable roof is resupported. Implementation of control measures reduces the threat of injury to miners and prevents production delays.The definition of cutter roof failure used in this report separates this unique type of failure from other ground control problems, to aid in the analysis of the causes and in the development of control methods. The definition is as follows:Cutter roof failure in mine roof rock is a failure process that initially begins as a fracture plane in the roof rock parallel to, and located at, the roof-rib intersection. The fracture propagates upward into the roof over the mine opening at an angle usually steeper than 60° from the horizontal.The mappable extent of cutter failure may range in length from only a few feet to several hundred feet and may traverse entry-crosscut intersections without change in direction. Once initiated along the roof-rib line, a cutter may propagate away from the roof-rib line of one side of a room, cross the roof span, and continue along the other side of the room. It is important to note that this definition excludes a similar type of failure (sometimes referred to as ""kink roof') that has comparable characteristics but occurs in the center of the entry. (The reasons for this distinction are discussed in the ""Background"" section.) Researchers refer to the cutter failure discussed in this report as ""classic"" cutter roof failure; except for short deviations across intersections and entries, initial failure is confined to the roof-rib intersection."

Large lateral forces on bridge foundations due to extreme events such as vessel collisions, earthquakes, and wave forces on storm surges during hurricane events are often the controlling design condition for bridge foundations. A review of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) vessel collision analysis and design codes used in the United States for highway bridges will be presented. The paper includes the background and development of the AASHTO Guide Specification and Commentary for Vessel Collision Design of Highway Bridges (1991) and vessel collision provisions of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (3rd Edition 2004 and the approved 2005 Interims). Experience in using the AASHTO codes will be discussed and observations on the adequacy and gaps, comparison with the European Standard Code, and recommendations for immediate and long term needs will be presented.

A series of studies of emissions from large coal-fired steam generators have included measurements of the concentrations of oxides of sulfur and oxides of notrogen. The sampling equipment, method of sampling, and analytical techniques used for processing of these samples are detailed. A method based on the precipitation of benzidine sulfate was developed for determining both SO3 and total oxides of sulfur in the presence of interfering acidic components in the stack gases. In addition, difficulties encountered with sampling and analytical techniques are also described.

Building on work completed in earlier papers, the current paper presents a techno-economic evaluation of two recently demonstrated technologies for treatment of arsenic containing refractory gold concentrates. Using defined project parameters and inputs, the authors compare capital and operating cost estimates for pressure oxidation (POx), and the Albion Process™. The paper incorporates data now publicly available from the Albion Process™ plant, which has operated at the GeoProMining Gold (GPM Gold) project in Armenia since 2014, as well as recent POx circuits.
