The project involved design, construction, and testing of hydraulic models of culverts, decant and open channel spillways which are typical drainage structures used for protecting mine waste embankments. MSHA (The Mine Safety and Health Administration, U. S. Department of Labor) made a motion picture of the tests. Tests results and products in the forms of graphs, tables and films, demonstrate the principles and factors which govern the function and performance of the three types of drainage structures.

Early stage design of driven piles primarily relies on static analysis based on one or a combination of total and effective stress approaches, the latter known as the method to estimate axial capacity. A database of 85 piles driven in the Puget Sound Lowland region and monitored at End of Driving (EOD) and Beginning of Restrike (BOR) was compiled along with capacities estimated using the CAPWAP procedure. Established soil profiles based on borings with standard penetration tests (SPT), cone penetration tests, and geologic maps were matched with their corresponding unit shaft resistance profiles from the CAPWAP procedure and resulted in more than 1,200 observations. In this study, eight new models were developed to predict the coefficients at EOD and BOR, based on the corresponding USCS categorization. Each coefficient model is formulated using a three-parameter exponential function, calibrated to capture the profile of coefficients with depth. These models could benefit the designer by providing them with a simple, empirical model that accounts for soil type and setup in a smooth, continuous function with depth. A parallel analysis was performed to assess the accuracy and variability of the formulated prediction models to facilitate implementation in load and resistance factor design (LRFD). INTRODUCTION The design of the axial capacity of driven piles during the planning stages of a project is typically based on a static analysis approach. The goals of this approach are to predict the components of capacity, consisting of the shaft and toe bearing resistances, and to assess project concept feasibility and preliminary lengths. In most cases, this analysis is based on empirically-developed methods, such as the total stress method, also known as the method (Tomlinson 1987) or the effective stress method known as the method (Esrig and Kirby 1979; Fellenius 1991). Many other methods, such as those based on in-situ test results exist and rely on correlations of blow counts from the standard penetration test (SPT), and cone tip and sleeve friction resistance from the cone penetration test (CPT), to shaft and toe pile resistances (Schmertmann 1978; Meyerhof 1976; Nottingham and Schmertmann 1975; Nordlund 1963; Eslami and Fellenius, 1997; De Ruiter and Beringen 1979). Although these methods were generally developed using data from specific geological regions, they are often recommended in national design manuals (e.g., FHWA, Hannigan et al. 2006).

"Zinc dust is used for the removal of primary impurities by cementation from the zinc sulphate electrolyte before electrowinning of zinc. However, the industrial zinc electrowinning plants has been reported that the zinc dust consumption is in large excess than the stoichiometric requirement. In the present investigation, morphology of the zinc dust has been altered by ball milling and utilized for the cementation of cadmium, which is one of the major impurity and compared the change in the rate of cementation with original zinc dust. Initially, 325 mesh size zinc dust was used for the optimization of the excess quantity of zinc dust to be used at a temperature of 50 °C. The chemical analysis of zinc dust before and after ball milling and morphology were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the solution was characterized by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The rate of cementation increased with increase in ball milling time. The residual precipitate obtained after filtration was also characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. Finally experiments were conducted to study the effect of temperature and kinetics of cadmium cementation using first order reaction kinetics. Based on the integral method, the calculated activation energy for the cadmium cementation with 4-hours ball milled zinc dust was found to be 3.39 KJ/mole. INTRODUCTION Primary production of zinc in the world is carried out by hydrometallurgical route. The primary impurities in the neutralized zinc sulphate solution that cause negative effect on electrowinning are copper, cadmium, cobalt, and nickel. Copper diminishes the current efficiency and cadmium contaminates the cathode zinc (Morgan, 1977) while electro winning. Nickel and cobalt lead to perforation in the zinc deposit and prevents the electro winning process (Abrasheva et al, 1984). Due to higher electro positivity of these metal impurities than zinc, they can co-deposit with cathode zinc at the time of electrolysis. In addition to that, some possible impurities (including cobalt) in the electrolysis may lower the hydrogen overvoltage, allowing deposition of hydrogen at cathode resulting in fall of current efficiency. The deposition of zinc on the cathode is possible only at higher hydrogen overvoltage which is practicable in the absence of such impurities (Raghavan et al., 1999). Cementation is one of the prominent purification technique, and in that less reactive metal can be replaced by highly reactive metal by allowing them into precipitation. Cementation of cadmium from zinc sulphate electrolyte is being done by the addition of zinc dust."

Flinders Mines is an iron ore explorer and developer with a tenement package located in the Hamersley Ranges region of Western Australia, approximately 70 km north of Tom Price. Exploration over the past five years has identified a Global Resource in excess of 900 Mt at a grade of 55.2 per cent Fe (+50 per cent Fe cut-off). This resource is spread across multiple deposits and has been divided into a number of mineralisation type domains. These domains are comprised of transported hematite rich detrital iron deposits (DID) and goethite dominant channel iron deposits (CID) as well as in situ bedded iron deposits (BID). The BID at PIOP is low in alumina and silica with a high calcined iron content making it an attractive exploration target. BID exploration techniques include a combination of mapping, structural analysis, downhole gamma logging and 3D geological modelling. Relationships identified between existing BID mineralisation, geology and structure has aided in targeting additional mineralisation across the tenement and highlighted other previously untested areas that warrant further investigation.CITATION:Tylkowski, L N, Corlis, N J, McDonald, G D, Petts, A E, Jennings, M F and Thomas, B J, 2013. Introduction Salt (sodium chloride) occurs naturally either in the solid state as rock salt or in solution as a component of natural brines. It is the major saline constituent of sea water, which contains about 4 percent salt-roughly 164 million tons, or enough to meet world salt demands for five years, per cubic mile. The great rock salt deposits of the world are generally regarded as having been formed by the evaporation of sea water over long periods of rime in wholly, partially, or periodically cut-off bays of ancient oceans. History and Occurrence of Salt in Canada We can speak today of the vastness of Canada's salt resources, but it was not always so. Settlement of our Atlantic seaboard and the Sr. Lawrence valley began in earnest in the early 1600's. The first small commercial salt works in Canada did not come into operation until 1866. Thus, for some two and a half centuries, the inhabitants of this growing country were entirely dependent on foreign sources for every pound of salt they consumed. The record shows that from at !east 1800 onward, the need for a domestic salt industry was clearly recognized by the governments of the day. It was during the Western Ontario oil-boom of 1866 that the initial discovery of rock salt in Canada was made, not far from Goderich, at a depth of 1,000 feet. A salt company was promptly organized, and with their operations there began the gradual and still uncompleted conquest of the Canadian salt market by the Canadian salt industry. Over the next thirty years many holes were drilled into the Salina formation both in Ontario and Michigan, and encountered rock salt. A vast salt-basin was disclosed, approximately outlined, and given the name Ontario-Michigan Salt Basin. The Ontario portion of the basin extends over at least 3,500 square miles, is met with at a depth varying between 800 and 1,600 feet, and has a thickness of 50 to 250 feet. No attempt has ever been made, so far as we know, to calculate the total salt reserves of this basin, but the minimum indicated in the Ontario portion by the figures just cited is just under thirty-five cubic miles. The specific gravity of rock salt is 2.2. From these data, those so inclined may calculate the tonnage.

THE conservation of strategic materials during war rime gives rise to many problems not commonly encountered in times of peace. During normal times, when world trade is unrestricted, we are apt to become lavish to a point of extravagance in our use of those materials which, during rime of war, become scarce owing to inadequate transportation and production facilities or because the enemy may be in position to control sources of supply. It becomes necessary, then, to enforce rationing of available sup-plies, and in some cases, where such supplies are wholly inadequate, we find we must resort to the use of substitute materials. We are now confronted with such a problem to an extent never before experienced, with the result that many of the commodities upon which our civilization depended are now either shut off completely or, because of the heavy demand occasioned by war production, are not available in sufficient quantities to meet requirements predicated on peace-time standards and manufacturing methods. It has become necessary, therefore, to make many changes, some of them very drastic indeed, to enable us to carry on our war effort effectively. This? discussion will deal briefly with one phase of this problem, namely, the conservation of alloys required in the making of steels necessary for war production. In line with a request from the War Production Board, the Technical Committee on Alloy Steels of the American Iron and Steel Institute made a study of experimental steels embodying the !east amount of alloying constituents, with the objective in mind of substituting these steels wherever possible for the standard alloy steels used heretofore. This study embraced the following phases: (1) The availability of silicon and manganese; (2) The average quantity of alloying elements recoverable from scrap; (3) The effect of increases in manganese and silicon contents on the general properties of steel; ( 4) The elements and ranges of elements which might be used to duplicate the hardenability of the steels now in use; (5) The effect of combining several elements in small quantities upon the properties of steel at various hardness and strength levels; (6) A determination as to whether or not the steels selected would suffice for general application. Working on this basis, the Committee arranged for the manufacture of several heats of steels containing various combinations of different amounts of such elements as silicon, manganese, chromium, nickel, and molybdenum. The steels thus produced were compared by hardenability tests.

"Chelopech concentrator (part of Dundee Precious Metals) is located in central-western Bulgaria. The current process plant utilizes conventional primary crushing and SAG mill grinding, copper and pyrite rougher and cleaner flotation stages to produce a marketable gold-rich copper and pyrite concentrates. As in the most processing plants, the pyrite depression is carried out alkaline media using lime. The subsequent activation of pyrite mineral is achieved by adding sulfuric acid, which has an adverse effect on the flotation equipment. Therefore, a series of laboratory flotation experiment for activation of lime depressed pyrite by ammonium salts, such as ammonium chloride (NH4Cl), ammonium sulfate (NH4)2SO4 and ammonium bicarbonate (NH4HCO3), have been conducted. The obtained results showed that ammonium bicarbonate proved to be the most appropriate reagent choice for pyrite mineral activation. These results are confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), performed to determine the surface chemistry of pyrite in its natural state, after lime treatment and subsequent treatment by NH4HCO3. The registered XPS spectra indicate that the hydrophilic phases on the pyrite surface could be efficiently removed by using the ammonium salt NH4HCO3. The industrial use of NH4HCO3 as an activator of lime-depressed pyrite is a possible alternative for sulfuric acid replacement as a most widely used pyrite activator. Flotation experiments with addition of 200, 400, 600 and 800 g/t from each of the studied ammonium salts have been conducted. Furthermore, the impact of the flotation pulp pH within the scope of 9.00 – 10.50 was also investigated. The obtained results from the laboratory flotation experiments, showed that the pyrite activation with ammonium bicarbonate is an excellent possibility for replacing the sulfuric acid as main pyrite activator reagent, in order to eliminate the gypsum accumulation during the flotation of pyrite in Chelopech concentrator.INTRODUCTION The Chelopech deposit, located about 60 km east of Sofia is one of the largest Cu-Au deposits in Europe. The ore have complicated mineralogical and chemical composition. The main ore minerals are represented by pyrite, enargite (luzonite), tennantite, chalcopyrite and bornite. The average copper content of the mined ore is about 1.1 % and the gold content is about 4.0 g/t."

This paper investigates the use of backfill zones and yielding pillars for subsidence control. The investigation begins by choosing an appropriate subsidence predictive technique to simulate the proposed subsidence-control schemes. Two case studies are performed in order to delineate the accuracy and utlility of the chosen predictive technique and then the results of these case studies are used to establish appropriate sets of regional site parameters. Next, a detailed analysis of the major variables affecting the outcome of the subsidence-control simulations is conducted and graphical displays of the exact sensitivity of the surface subsidence to these variables are given. Finally, alterations to the surface subsidence that are expected from using two major subsidence-control techniques are presented. The first technique to be assessed is a backfilled pillar centered longitudinally in a panel. With this arrangement, a minimal amount of backfill material can produce substantial decreases in vertical displacements. The second technique to be assessed is the use of yielding gate pillars to reduce the sinuosity of the transverse subsidence over adjacent panels. With proper design, this technique can greatly curtail surface strains and help minimize remedial drainage control.

DECISION to build a mill at the Bayard property was made in May 1942. Western-Knapp Engineering Co., of San Francisco, assisted by engineers of U. S. Smelting, handled the design and construction. Much of the milling equipment was moved from the Company's mill at Goldroad, Ariz. Wartime restrictions necessitated wood construction and paper sheathing except for structures adjacent to the Bullfrog shaft. Construction started in September 1942 and milling in March 1943. Bayard ores are processed in a single-ection mill. About half of the ore treated during the past year was hoisted through the Bullfrog shaft and the rest was trucked from other shafts. Coarse storage includes four bins, two of 120 tons each for Bullfrog ores and two of 85 to 120 tons each, served by a truck ramp. The low capacity figure refers to

An AIME transaction by P.L. Allsman (1960), "Analysis of Explosive Action in Breaking Rock," contains many useful concepts applicable to blast design. Of special interest was the derivation of a heave blasting burden formula, which is important in establishing the maximum burden. Unfortunately, its derivation contains a fundamental error and then a compensating one. This formula was: [bImpulse _P d At max =nwuwu where: bmax = maximum burden in m (ft). P= average detonation pressure in N/m2 (lb per ft2). A= duration of the average detonation pressure in sec. n= 3.1416. w= specific weight of rock in N/m3 (lb per ft3). u= minimum velocity that must be imparted to the rock in m/sec (ft per sec). d= borehole diameter in m (ft).] The derivation used the impulse-momentum principle, with a 0.3 m thick (1 ft thick) radius of rock mass being acted on by an explosive impulse. However, the rock weight was not converted to mass by dividing by the gravitational constant. This mistake can be verified by checking the units in the formula, which resolve into m1/2-sec instead of meters. Adding the gravitational constant corrects this: [P d Atbmax =gu g = gravitational constant equal to 9.81 m/sect (32.2 ft per sec2).] If the minimum velocity is now taken as 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec), as was recommended, excessively large burdens result. Any appropriate rock velocity should be capable of throwing the rock mass a minimum distance so that the swell needed for breakage can occur. Unless the burden is extremely small and the bench height is very high, it is unlikely that a velocity of only 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec) will be sufficient. A review of the literature indicates that average rock velocities observed by camera studies typically range from 15 to 30 m/sec (50 to 100 ft per sec) (duPont deNemours and Co., 1977; Tansey, 1979). On this basis, a minimum rock velocity of about 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) would be expected and not 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per see). When a velocity of 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) is inserted into the corrected formula, the results approximate those of the original formula with a velocity of 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). The economical recovery of the valuable constituents from the effluent of gas-con-densate wells has developed into a problem of balancing the cost of recovery against the cost of compressing the residual gas back into the formation. A possible method of extracting the gasoline and distillate from the natural gas is by oil absorption at high pressures. In order to design and evaluate an absorption plant, fundamental data on the composition of the coexisting hydro- carbon vapor and liquid phases at various temperatures and pressures are essential. A review of the literature indicated that the necessary data for the design of such plants are lacking. The nearest approach to desired published data is that of Katz and Hackmuth,~ who experimentally deter-mined the composition of the coexisting vapor and liquid phases in a natural gas-crude oil system at pressures up to 3000 lb. per sq. in. and at temperatures from 40' to zoo°F. This paper presents the results of the experimental determination of the equilib-rium distribution of the hydrocarbons methane through hexane between natural gas and a typical absorber oil. The ranges of temperature and pressure chosen were from 33' to r8oUF. and from 100 to 5000 lb. per sq. inch. Materials The absorber oil was a typical naturally occurring, Straw-colored distillate that had previously been steam-distilled to an initial boiling point of 300 F. The physical and chemical properties, including the results of an Engler distillation, are presented in Table I. Relatively few metal-metal systems exist that would permit the creation of fiber-metal composites consisting of mutually insoluble constituents. It is anticipated that most high strength-to-weight ratio and high -temperature fiber composites ultimately to be produced will utilize high-strength fibers embedded in a highly alloyed matrix. An investigation was conducted to determine the effect of alloying on the tensile Properties and micro-structure of tungsten-fibey-reinforced composites. Composites were made of tungsten fibers infiltrated with copper binary alloys that contain elements of varying solubility in tungsten. Room-temperature tensile tests were made on the composites, and a metallographic study of the microstructure of the fiber-metal-matrix interfaces was conducted. It was shown that, as the depth of penetration of some alloying elements into the fiber increased, a decrease in both tensile strength and ductility of the composite results. A notch effect, due to the formation of a brittle alloy zone with the tungsten fiber, was observed and gave rise to greater reductions in tensile properties and ductility behavior than would be Predicted by a law-of-mixture relation alone. In recent years, investigators have considered combining fibrous materials with relatively weak binder materials. The interest in fiber-reinforced composites results from the fact that fibers or wires may be exceedingly strong and exhibit mechanical properties superior to those of the bulk materials from which they are derived. For example, tungsten wires drawn to less than 1 mil in diameter may have strengths of over 600,000 psi,' while steel wires ranging from 10 to 3 mils in diameter may have strengths of the order of 300,000 to over 600,000 psi.2 Both metallic and ceramic whiskers are known to have very high strengths. For example, iron whiskers have been shown to have strengths of 1.9 million psi3 and sapphire whiskers have been reported to have strengths of the order of 1.7 million psi.4 If all or part of the strengths of such fibers could be retained, subsequent to the incorporation of the fibers in an engineering material, a superior material could result. In previous work done at the Lewis Research Center, McDanels, Jech, and weeton5 demonstrated the feasibility of fabricating metal-fiber—metal-matrix composites that utilized the full strengths of the fiber and matrix materials. Tungsten fibers were combined with a copper matrix by a liquid-infiltration method such that the tungsten fibers were uniaxially oriented parallel to the tensile axis of the composite. A linear relation was established that related the tensile strength of the composite with the volume percent of the fibers. Mutually insoluble constituents were selected for the study so that the strength of the composite could be quantitatively related to the strength of the individual constituents. The fact that there are only a few metals that are mutually insoluble with tungsten, e.g., copper, silver, gold, and zinc, and that these either have low melting points, high vapor pressures, or poor oxidation resistance, makes it necessary to utilize other metals that are soluble in tungsten, where high-temperature applications are ultimately contemplated. It was anticipated that, for most practical fiber-reinforced composite materials, it would be necessary to use a fiber and metallic matrix that would have varying degrees of solubility for each other. A logical extension of the earlier work was thus felt to be a study that would determine the effects of elements that had mutual solubility with the tungsten. Numerous investigators have found that tungsten fibers may be damaged by thermal treatments or contamination of the surface of the fiber by alloying elements.6-10 On the other hand, surface treatments may improve the strength of such fibers."-" Relatively little work with composites containing tungsten fibers have been reported. The work of parikh14 has shown that kinked, short-length tungsten, steel, and molybdenum fibers could str'engthen such matrices as silver, gold, and copper. This report describes the work done to develop a coal mining machine to increase productivity and recovery from thin seams beyond the highwall, in addition to decreasing the miner's susceptibility to to highwall hazards First, radar transducers were adapted to measure coal thinkness and detect rock and coal interfaces; Then, the radar was incorporated into a cutterhead with steering controls. Next, visual displays were designed to show cutter position in the coal seam, and anticipated change in coal seam inclination, Finally, development of a telemetry system made remote control of the cutterhead possible. Simultaneously, a high-performance extended depth (HPxD) auger machine was designed with an automatic system to handle 600 ft of 36-in, diameter dual spiral flight conveyor sections. A two man crew controls all operations from a weather conditioned cab outside the VDZ, either at night or day time. As a primary mining tool, working 4000 hr/yr (2 shifts/day) recovering 60% of the coal 600 ft beyond the highwall, productlon to 500,000 ton/yr can be achieved. Gold, silver and palladium may be separated from the other base metals and sulphur contained in copper sulphide precipitates derived from the Sherritt-Gordon nickel process using a process involving an oxidation roast, a reduction roast and a Cu(II)/acetonitrile leach. Sulphur is removed as SO, in an oxidation roast and the hot calcine is reduced with carbon, or with carbon plus cuprous chloride. The resulting product contains metallic copper which is readily dissolved with cupric ions in aqueous acetonitrile solution. Copper powder is recovered by thermal disproportionation. The residue contains the bulk of the iron and precious metals and may be treated by a number of methods, including direct cyanidation or melting with suitable fluxes. Melting the residue will produce a copper alloy containing the precious metals and remove the iron as a slag. The alloy can be recycled to the copper leaching stage or sent for toll refining depending on the precious metal content. Impurities from the leaching circuit are controlled by a bleed circuit which in one approach utilizes the SO, from the calciner to produce Chevreul's salt and separates copper from the soluble cobalt and nickel. Alternatively, the bleed may be directed back to the main refinery copper boil stage or oxydrolysis stage.

The application of simple methods of statistical analysis, coupled with geostatistical analysis and geographic information systems, can only summarise and give an outline of the spatial distribution of the parameters measured. Spatial analysis of the components or factors calculated, through principal component analysis or factor analysis, allows assessment of the geographical distribution of the dominant processes contributing to soil composition and/or contamination. Neither of these tools, however, distinguishes between the different sources of pollution. The application of canonical correlation to the data, driven by expert appraisal of the potential pollution sources, allows their quantitative and spatial assessment while GIS provides the environment in which to organise and present the results. The methodology is illustrated by its application to soil-contamination data from the Lavrio area in Greece, where silver-bearing orebodies have been mined for more than 25 centuries

The work covered in this report was done to meet the requests from many Government agencies for information on alleviating sludge difficulties in No. 6 (Bunker C) fuel-oil storage tanks. Accumulated sludge at times caused serious loss in tank capacities; pumps became overloaded or lost suction; strainers often required very frequent cleaning; fuel-oil heaters in some instances became fouled and inefficient; and gobs of sludge that passed the strainers interfered with good combustion. The requests also included questions regarding the usefulness in general of oil "additives" for preventing sludge and the relative merits of the many trade-named additives being marketed. Realizing that preventing such difficulties would result in substantial savings to the Government, an investigation was begun with the limited funds avail-able. Although various claims are made for No. 6 fuel-oil additives other than preventing sludge, only an investigation as regards the storage tank-sludge problem has been possible.
