The North Texas district, as herein defined, includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Coolie, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita, and Wilbarger. This area covers generally the crest and south flank of a system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift. The oil and gas accumulations along this feature are in traps, which, although localized by structures incident to the regional uplift, are usually modified by stratigraphic changes in the sediments. Excepting the fields in southeastern Baylor, southern Archer, and southwestern Clay Counties, all the fields within the district are on this Red River uplift. These exceptions, which have the same type of oil and gas accumulation as the other fields, are on the extreme north end of the Bend arch, which is a broad anticline plunging northward from the Llano uplift in central Texas to Archer County. The larger part of past oil and gas production has come from Pennsylvanian strata, with less important amounts from the Permian, and minor but increasingly important quantities from the Ordovician. DevELopments during 1941 Nearly 1600 wells were drilled in the district during 1941 as compared with more than 1700 in 1940. However, the ratio of successful drilling operations was higher and some 1200 oil wells were completed. Production held about even with the previous year, as did the number of producing oil wells. Known oil reserves increased slightly throughout exploration, which generally was carried on at greater depths than in former years. The average depth of discovery wells was 300 ft. deeper than in 1940. Although discoveries were evenly divided numerically between horizons above the base of the Strawn series and those below the Strawn, the deeper horizons, including the Bend series of the Pennsylvanian, the Mississippian limestone, and the Simpson and Ellenburger of the Ordovician, furnished most of the increase in oil reserves. The largest single addition to the reserves was in the Ellenburger formation in the K.M.A. field. During the year 112 wells were completed in this horizon, bringing the total developed acreage to some 4600 acres. The Straan series in K.M.A. also received considerable development in 1941, with 114 completions. At the end of the year, 99 wells were being used for input and total monthly volume of gas returned to the reservoir reached a high of 340,548 M cu. ft. in December from a low of 208,853 M cu. ft. in February. Total volume of gas returned during 1941 was 3,306,052 M cu. ft. This paper describes of processing tests of 8 flotation concentrates containing precious and base metals by pressure oxidation (POX) method. Concentrates 1 and 2 were gold-copper concentrates. Zinc and silver were by-products in these concentrates. These concentrates were processed by POX with following cyanidation of POX solid residues, copper solvent extraction and zinc carbonate precipitation. The recoveries of gold, copper, silver and zinc from these concentrate were 98, 99, 30 and 99%, respectively. Concentrates 3 and 4 were lead-zinc concentrates. Silver was by-product in concentrate 3. Gold, silver and copper were by-products in concentrate 4. Concentrate 3 was processed by POX with following reduction smelting of POX cakes for primary lead recovery and zinc carbonate precipitation from POX solution. The recoveries of lead and silver into ingot were 96 and 98%, respectively. The recovery of zinc was 99%. Concentrate 4 was processed by POX with following zinc carbonate precipitation and reduction smelting of POX cakes. Copper was precipitated from the POX solution using sodium sulphide prior zinc precipitation. The recovery of zinc into carbonate concentrate was 99%. The recoveries of lead, gold and silver into lead bullion were 95, 99 and 98% respectively. The recovery of copper into sulphide concentrate was 99%. Concentrate 5 was gold-pyrite concentrate, and concentrates 6-8 were double refractory gold-arsenopyrite concentrates. Silver was by-product in these concentrates. These concentrates processed by POX and CIL. The recovery of gold from concentrate 5 was 98%, and from concentrates 6-8 was 85-90. Low gold recovery from concentrates 6-8 was associated with preg-robbing factor. The recovery of silver from gold-sulphide concentrates did not exceed 10-20%. The low silver recovery was associated with argentojarosite formation that is resistant to cyanidation. The flowsheets for complex processing of precious and base metals sulphide flotation concentrates based on this test work results were proposed.

Highly fertile magmatic conditions for porphyry copper formation, such as high water content, can be recognized in zircon trace element chemistry using proxies as the 104(Eu/Eu*)/Yb ratio. Due to their resistance to alteration and long-distance transport, zircons hosted in sedimentary sequences can be used to assess fertility over large detrital source areas. Herein we present a study based on LA-ICP-MS analyses of zircons derived from post-Oligocene sedimentary sequences cropping out across the Paleocene-Eocene Cerro Colorado district of Northern Chile. U-Pb dating on individual detrital zircons yielded ages ranging from Jurassic to Miocene, concordant with the district geology. Subsequent fertility assessment recognized several peaks in the magmatic hydration over time.

This did not come easily for although blessed with a unique mineral deposit at Broken Hill large in size and rich in values much courage and daring was needed in the development of processes whereby they could yield the best results.The resultant development of the flotation processes at Broken Hill is one of the most important inventions of the 20th century.

The east span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge (SFOBB), which is one of the most heavily traveled bridges in the world, will be replaced due to seismic safety concerns. The majority of the new bridge will be founded on large-diameter (1.8 to 2.5 meters), approximately 60- to 100-meter-long pile foundations The large-diameter steel pipe piles and soil conditions are similar to those used/encountered in many offshore structures. Thus, the design methods used are based on site-specific modifications to the procedures recommended by the American Petroleum Institute rather than the conventional procedures that have been formulated and used for the design of much smaller piles. Pile foundations will experience their maximum loads during the design earthquake. For the Safety Evaluation Earthquake, tension loads of up to approximately 80 to 90 meganewtons (MN) and compression loads of up to approximately 120 to 140 MN were calculated. Due to the economic importance of the SFOBB and the consequences of catastrophic failure in both economic and human terms, the design and analysis of the pile foundations supporting the bridge consider a number of aspects of pile-soil behavior that are normally ignored. Those aspects include: 1) the effects of consolidation and setup, 2) the behavior under dynamic loading, 3) the losses of resistance under cyclic loading, and 4) the load-settlement behavior of the piles under severe cyclic loading conditions. Since the treatment of complex aspects of pile foundation behavior is not codified in any guiding documents, several project-specific methods were developed for design and analysis of the foundation piles.

"The major importance of liners in grinding is their role in providing an appropriate trajectory for the charge. Since it is not possible to study the charge movement by direct observation in operating industrial mills, this task is accomplished by physical (laboratory), and/or, mathematical (software) methods. Because of the high cost and a longer time required for a physical analysis, mathematical simulations have become more common. Simulation of the effect of liner shape on the charge movement has provided a means to select a proper design based on the operational objectives and conditions. Furthermore, the liner shape changes due to wear and impact during operation, which will influence the charge trajectory. This adds more of an incentive to use simulation. These changes in liner could be predicted through liner profile measurements during operation and/or simulation. In this research, an inhouse developed DEM software called KMPCDEM © was used to simulate the charge movement in industrial plant SAG mills. A geometrical method of implementing the shell liners on SAG mills at the Sarcheshmeh (9.75×4.87 m) and the Gole-E-Ghohar (9×2.05 m) operations facilitated the software simulation. Point by point implementation of the measurements of liner profiles of these mills enabled the study to trend the change in the charge movement as the liners wear. Comparison of the simulation to a laboratory mill (1 m diameter) showed that the difference between the measured and predicted charge impact point, shoulder angle and toe angle were 6, 4 and 3°, respectively.INTRODUCTIONComminution is the most energy intensive operation constituting the major portion of operating and capital costs of a mineral processing plant. In the last decade, a vast number of research was aimed at studying various aspects of grinding with the aim of performance improvements (Davis, 1919; Mishra & Rajamani, 1990; kalala, Breetzke, & Moys, 2008). Mill liners transfer the input power to the charge and play a significant role in affecting the motion of the charge (Mclvor, 1983; Mishra & Rajamani, 1990; Radziszewski, 1997; Van Nierop, Glover, Hinde, & Moys, 2001; kalala et al., 2008). Lifters are usually used with mill liners to extend their life and to enhance the grinding and impact breakage efficiency. Mill lifters are used to raise the grinding media and ore to transfer the energy from the mill to the load (Rezaeizadeh, Fooladi, Powell, & Weerasekara, 2010)."

Clay sorbents from the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin represent important but still some-what neglected accessory raw material. Submitted paper is concerned with relation between mineral structure, sorptive efficiency and reclamation exploitation of these rocks. Characters and localities of main clay sorbents from the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin are shortly evaluated in an introduction. In next part, methodology of mineralogy survey for these accessory raw materials is stated, it is based on diffract analyse with D 5000 Siemens X-ray diffracto-meter. At the conclusion results are stated of mineralogy analyses from several clay sorbents. The determination of the zeolite and montmorillonite localities was accentuated. The paper presents also possibilities of practical clay sorbents utilization, especially by reclamation works.

The deep South African gold mines rely on refrigeration to provide a safe working environment. Chilled water, which is produced in large central refrigeration plants, is distributed throughout mines In insulated pipes. In view of the high cost of the insulation materials and recent regulations which prohibit the use of certain insulation materials, a careful examination of the actual benefits of insulating chilled water pipes was undertaken. The objective of the investigation was to produce general guidelines regarding the use of insulation, but the results of numerous studies have shown that the use of insulation is extremely site specific and thus no general guidelines can be given. To assist ventilation engineers with studies on insulation requirements for their cooling systems a computer program has been developed. This paper describes the personal computer program which contains the same user friendly interface as developed for other COMRO programs. Is fully menu driven and incorporates a comprehensive HELP facility which provides background information and assistance with the selection of input data. The effects on the ventilation air and chilled water temperatures from not insulating chilled water pipes in certain areas are calculated. Air leakage, heat flow from the surrounding rock to the ventilation air and heat flow from the ventilation air to the water flowing in chilled water pipes are taken into account. A simple cooling system is considered in which cold water is distributed over a distance of 1 000 m through pipes to a single air cooler. The influences of changes in the temperature of the chilled water and ventilation air, as well as air leakage on the insulation requirements are determined.

An important factor in the design and operation of a lignite-gasification plant is knowledge of the thermal requirements. These not only vary with different-size plants but also with the operating conditions for a plant of given capacity. Thermal data have been collected since 1945 from a commercial-scale lignite-gasification pilot plant operated by the Bureau of Mines at Grand Forks, N. Dak. The description and operation of this plant and a study of the gas-composition data have already been described in previous reports (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).2) / This investigation was made to review the thermal data taken in tests and to correlate them in terms of the fraction of undecomposed steam and the H2:CO ratio.

Inclines and tunnels can extend from ground surface to considerable depths traversing a wide range of lithologies. The strata encountered may be affected by loosening and induced stresses at different locations along the route. It is suggested that Phase I of the pre- driving assessment process should include study of the geology, hydrogeology, rock material and rock mass characteristics. A rock mass disruption factor is used to express the ratio of the unconfined strength of intact rock material to the unconfined strength of in situ rock mass. It is suggested that there is a relationship between in situ (secondary) permeability values and the disruption factor, since the permeability of the rock mass is governed by parameters which influence strength. In Phase I1 of the pre-driving assessment, consideration should be given to the prediction of primary loosening which results largely from disturbances to the rock mass arising from the driving process. Also in Phase 11, preliminary assessments are made of the effects of induced stresses and of the geodurability characteristics of the rocks. In Phase 111, the mechanics of various secondary loosening pro- cesses are considered along with their relevance to estimates of stand up time and support requirements. Yield-line analysis is introduced for the study of plastic and brittle type bending deformations. Stand up time and support characteristics are also assessed. In Phase IV, the effects of induced stresses are analysed. It is suggested that even for broken rock in the Yield Zone, the rock mass disruption factor may not often increase above lo which is equivalent to an in situ permeability of 10-1 m/s.

Underground mining for gold began in Beaconsfield in 1877 and development of the Tasmania Mine saw the sinking of multiple shafts, including the Hart Shaft over the ensuing 35 years. The mine closed in 1914 at a depth of 455 m due to prevailing economics, eventually reopening in 1999. The modern mine closed in 2012 after extending the mine from a historical depth of 455 m to the exhaustion of the modern Ore Reserve at a depth of 1210 m. West Tamar Council took over the lease for the immediate area around the Hart Shaft as an extension of the adjacent museum. The Hart Shaft and above ground structures became a significant drawcard for visitors. Tasmania was affected by sustained wet weather during May, June and July of 2016 which caused severe flooding and significant Statewide damage. This uncharacteristically intense wet weather caused saturation of the ground surrounding the Hart Shaft. Eventual shaft failure was first identified in August 2016. The failure of the shaft occurred at approximately 50 m below surface and resulted in a plug of material completely blocking the shaft. Significant surface subsidence affecting the surface infrastructure ensued. Due to the unstable nature of the surrounding material, it was determined that addressing the failure above the blockage would not provide a permanent solution to prevent the continued flow of material into the shaft. Many options to stabilise the shaft were considered, however it was assessed that a concrete plug in the shaft in competent ground at a depth of 100 m below surface and well below the blockage, would provide the only long-term solution. Man-entry was considered unsafe. The solution to access ultimately entailed filling the entire shaft with granular fill up to 100 m depth to act as formwork for a concrete plug. The rising mains at 400 mm and 250 mm diameter, which remained in place in the shaft, provided the avenue for placing the fill and ultimately, the concrete plug. Once the plug was in place the remainder of the shaft up to the underside of the blockage and over the top of the blockage to the surface was successfully filled with a combination of more granular fill and flowable cement stabilised sand. Pyrometallurgical products from lime roasting of refractory gold ores, pyrite, and arsenopyrite have been examined for their mineralogy, porosity, permeability, retention of contaminant sulfur and arsenic, and potential effectiveness of gold extraction. Cathodoluminescence microscopy, supplemented by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive analysis study, has shown that the products phases have characteristic cathodoluminescence properties as follows: anhydrite (CaS04), deep blue; unreacted portlandite (Ca(OH)2), deep purple; oldhamite (CaS), light yellow to rarely pink or orange; a sulfur-rich, arsenic-poor phase, violet; an arsenic-rich, sulfur-poor phase, non-CL. Within the temperature range examined (400-850°C), hematite exhibits greater porosity and permeability at the intermediate roast temperatures of 600-650°C.

The Jabiluka uranium mine was constructed in the Ngarradj catchment, a right bank tributary of Magela Creek in the Northern Territory. The Jabiluka Mineral Lease is adjacent to Kakadu National Park, near an area listed as Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention and recognised under the World Heritage Convention. In the late dry season of 1998 and prior to the 1998 - 1999 wet season, a stream-monitoring program was implemented in the Ngarradj catchment to collect baseline data on sediment transport within the catchment to assess and proactively manage associated impacts caused by mining at Jabiluka. Stream suspended mud concentration, stream discharge and rainfall data were collected for four wet seasons (1998 - 2002) giving an almost continuous data set. The stream system has high natural variability dependent on rainfall intensity and subsequent discharge and pre-wet season fire distribution and intensity. In general, mud concentration is elevated at the commencement of the wet season until about February. This is caused by first-flush removal of surface material detached during the dry season by agents such as bioturbation (including anthropogenic activity), wind erosion and surface desiccation. Water quality trigger values downstream of the mine were derived using upstream percentiles and the before-after-control-impact, paired site design. Both analyses showed no observable impact from mine construction in 1998 or during the study period. However, the impacts of dry season fires could be clearly detected. The data set provides good baseline information for future assessment at Jabiluka and demonstrates the need to view measured parameter values on a catchment-wide basis with knowledge of rainfall, discharge and fire distribution.

Problem: Incident investigation reports do not usually contain enough information to aid in studying boom arm vertical speed for roof bolting machines to determine the impact that appendage speed had on an operator's risk of experiencing a contact. Laboratory experiments with human subjects are also not feasible because of safety and ethical issues. Method Researchers successfully developed a three-dimensional computer model that uses virtual human simulation software as the primary means to gather contact data when the boom arm touches the operator's hand, arm, head, or leg. Results: Data analysis of roof bolter simulations shows that the speed of the boom arm is the most important factor in determining the risk of an operator making contact. Regardless of other variables, contact incidents were always greater when the bolter arm was moving up, greater on the hand, and greater for the boom arm part of the machine. The reason why the subject experiences more contacts when the boom arm is moving up rather than down is that more risky behaviors occur during drilling and bolting when the boom arm is ascending. Based on the data collected, boom speeds greater than 13 in/sec result in a substantial increase in risk to the roof bolter operator of making contact. Speeds less than or equal to 13 in/sec are associated with a more modest relative risk of making contact, which represents a decrease in potential hazard. Impact on Industry: The use of such information can be quite helpful in making recommendations to machine design and task procedures to reduce the likelihood that roof bolter operators will experience injury due to contact with a moving roof bolting machine's boom arm.

The steady state shape of a shrinking cylindrical grain boundary of miform boundary energy is shown to be circular. This is based on the principle of either the minimum rate of entropy production or the minimum thermokinetic potential. The circular shape corresponds also to a state of minimum (not maximum) velocity. The steady state shape of a grain boundary moving between two inclined surfaces is a circular cylindrical arc whose position and curvature will be afjected by the nature of the surfaces. The minimum thermokinetic potential is the only valid criterion in this case. THE preceding paper1 reports an interesting experiment in which it is shown that a grain boundary moving between two inclined surfaces assumes a circular cylindrical arc whose axis nearly coincides with the line of intersection of the two surfaces. The driving force is well defined since it is the energy of the grain boundary itself. The velocity of the grain boundary is found not to vary linearly with the driving force. Several interesting questions arise: 1) What principle determines the shape of a moving grain boundary? 2) What is the effect of the inclined surfaces? 3) How do we understand the nonlinear velocity-driving force relationship? It is attempted in this paper to discuss the first two questions based on irreversible thermodynamics and in a following paper to discuss the third question based on dislocation theory. STEADY STATE SHAPE OF A SHRINKING LOOP (A CYLINDRICAL GRAIN BOUNDARY) In irreversible thermodynamics, there are two criteria for the steady state. One is the minimum rate of entropy production2 which is based on the symmetry of phenomenological coefficients and is applicable to linear force-flux relations with constant coefficients. The other is the minimum thermokinetic potential3 which is based on the integrability of a certain Pfaffian differential equation and is applicable to nonlinear systems with variable coefficients. In the case of a shrinking grain boundary loop (a two dimensional version of a cylindrical grain), the flux of atoms across the grain boundary can be taken as the local boundary velocity v measured perpendicular to the boundary (the number of atoms transferred per unit area per second is equal to the product of atom density and the velocity of the boundary). The local thermodynamic driving force can be taken as y/p with y being the grain boundary energy (invariant with respect to the orientation and curvature of the grain boundary) and p being the radius of curvature. Such driving force can be understood by considering the loop as an elastic string with tension y. As shown in Fig. 1, across a length ds along the loop, the direction of y changes by an angle d@ which is ds/p. Because of this change of direction, the tension exerts a force perpendicular to the curve equal to yd@. The force per unit length is then y/p. According to the experimental observation, the velocity v is a power function of y/p, where M is the velocity at unit driving force and 'n is a constant. The rate of entropy production per ds along the loop is vyds/pT, where T is the temperature. For a given length L of the loop, the total rate of entropy production is The thermokinetic ptentia13 has only a differential definition and its existence depends on the integrability of this definition. In this case, Eq. [3] happens to be a total differential and the thermokinetic potential can be defined as which turns out to be the same as the rate of entropy production, Eq. [2], except for a constant factor n + 1. Strictly speaking, since the flux-force relation is not linear, the rate of entropy production may not be a minimum at the steady state. However, because of the proportionality between Eqs. [2] and 141, the state of minimum thermokinetic potential happens to be the same as that of minimum rate of entropy production. The steady state shape thus can be obtained by minimizing either integral [2] or [4] for a given L.

Since 1963, Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8179 has served the mining industry as a fundamental safety guide in the field of blasting agents. In the intervening 14 years, many changes have occurred, and this report presents revised and new recommendations which recognize these changes. For example, AN-FO is now supplied mostly premixed, whereas in 1963 much of it was mixed by the blaster; aluminum metal (A1) and other fuels are now often added to AN-FO to increase strength, and flake aluminum powder is used as a sensitizer in water gels; and water gels or slurries that are now extensively used were just coming into practical use in 1963. To provide the widest possible margin of safety, some of the Bureau's recommendations are more stringent than existing regulations,
