"Contrary to the way it is often portrayed, the average organization or company is far from being a cold, calculating machine. It is actually a highly emotive place where interaction with people is a fundamental part of its ability to perform satisfactorily.The company, through its employers, expects employees, including new graduates, to have the ability to cope adequately with this emotive environment. The graduate is frequently unable to meet this expectation because he/she has not been developed to do so. Technical knowledge is his only asset. This deficiency manifests itself in leadership shortcomings, both intrapersonal and interpersonal. Further analysis reveals a deficiency in three elements of leadership - self-awareness, oral communication, and an ability to work cooperatively in teams.To address these three elements of leadership, Sasol Coal, a subsidiary of the big petrochemical company in South Africa, sponsored a leadership programme at the University of Pretoria for their final-year bursary students in the faculty of Engineering. This programme, the Sasol Engineering and Leadership Academy (SELA), consisted of a number of interventions designed to address the three areas of self-awareness, oral communication, and cooperative behaviour in teams. These interventions varied from an intrapersonal nature to interpersonal aspects. Psychometric assessments were followed by experiential modules dealing with the three constructs.SELA was evaluated at the end of the year. The results showed a positive shift in the main constructs of self-awareness, communications, and cooperation. This was measured quantitatively and qualitatively. Conclusions were drawn and recommendations for improving the programme were proposed."

"Computer simulations of structural and compositional development in equiaxed dendritic alloy solidification are performed using a recently developed multi phase model. The model not only accounts for the transport phenomena occurring on the macroscopic (system) scale, but includes also the grain nucleation and growth mechanisms taking place at various microscopic length scales. In this paper, a numerical technique consisting of a fully implicit control-volume based finite difference method and a multiple time step scheme is developed for accurate and efficient simulations of both micro- and macro-phenomena. Sample numerical results are presented to reveal the effects of liquid now and crystal sedimentation on segregation and the final grain size distribution. In particular, the importance of the interplay between the dendrite microstructure and multiphase now patterns is shown.IntroductionIn recent years, modeling of equiaxed dendritic solidification without convection has experienced considerable progress (1,2]. Nucleation and growth kinetic laws have been coupled with transient heat conduction calculations to determine the solidification microstructure. However, modeling of equiaxed dendritic solidification with melt convection and solid movement has not been attempted so far, largely because of the complications associated with the transport of free equiaxed crystals in the melt. The gravity-induced transport of free crystals is fundamental to the development and extent of the equiaxed zone and also greatly affects the columnar to equiaxed transition. Another possible effect of crystal sedimentation or floatation is to cause severe macrosegregation as well as structural inhomogeneities. The only study available in the literature that accounts for both liquid convection and solid transport is by Ni and Beckermann (3], but deals with globulitic structures (as opposed to dendritic)"

The Bureau of Mines has reviewed those portions of the "Tariff Schedules of the United States Annotated 1963" that are of interest to the minerals industry. This study shows to what extent rates of duty were altered (increased of decreased), and provides a bridge where possible from the old Schedule A classification system to the new TSUS system of statistical reporting of import data. In general the new tariff has corrected previous classification defects and inconsistencies, but the rates of duties have not been materially changed.

The chromite deposits along the Stillwater complex in Stillwater and Sweetgrass Counties, Mont., have at various times been studied and reported on by the Federal Geological Survey, the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, other Government agencies, and private interests, Several of the deposits were explored to a mall extent by the owners during the World War of 1914-17, but no production resulted. The importance of these deposits and the urgent necessity of developing large domestic sources of chromite were realized shortly before the beginning of the recent World War. These deposits were therefore investigated and developed by Government agencies and., as a result, now afford the largest known reserves of chromium in the United States. In 1939, under the authority of the Strategic Minerals Act, the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey made preliminary investigations of these deposits. As a result, the Bureau of Mines conducted an extensive program of trenching, diamond core drilling, and sampling. This work was begun in August 1939 and continued to April 1943. The Bureau of Mines also performed numerous metallurgical tests on the beneficiation of the chromite ores and concentrates and for the production of chromium metal there from. Research continues as a means toward utilizing these ores.

It is the nature of mining to reshape the landscape. Mining is an earth moving process with many of the same activities associated with the regrading of a site for a shopping center, drainage channel, housing project or ballfield. The difference exists only in purpose and duration of activity. The purpose of mining is to, produce a valuable product. The purpose of regrading for construction of a project is to create a predetermined landscape for a specific end use. In both situations the objective is to move earth materials as efficiently as possible. The question is then raised, if similarities exist, can mining operations be directed to shape predetermined landscapes as an integral part of its earth moving activity. This paper will explore the opportunities and issues of shaping sand, gravel and hardrock construction aggregate sites for productive end uses. It is based upon the premise that, as an earth moving operation, the process of extracting sand and gravel includes an inherent capability to shape productive lands as an integral part of the mining operation. In the course of any mining operation non-commercial materials, including overburden, fines and excess sand are handled to extract and process the commercial products. This activity exists regardless of whether or not there is a plan to reclaim the land. Moving this dirt is a basic operational cost. This cost need not be significantly increased when the material is deposited to shape land rather than be stock- piled just to clear the way for mining the deposit. Moving of dirt to create useable land can be guided by the same criteria used to remove the dirt from the deposit: for example, limiting the- hauling distance. Over a period of time earth handling costs can be reduced by minimizing the need to transport the stockpiled material a second time to the new landform location.

Electrical resistivities 01 liquid Cd-Bi, Cd-Sn, Cd-Pb, In-Bi, and Sn-Bi alloys were measured using an electrodeless technique. The resistivities ranged from 50 to 160 microhm -cm, temperature dependences were positive, and no sharp peaks in the composition dependence of the resistivity were observed. On the basis of these observations, it was concluded that the alloys are typical metallic liquids. The electron con-cent9,ation was calculated from the measured resis-tizlity and available thermodynamic data using a model which attributes electrical resistivity to scattering by density and composition flzcctuations. A correla-tion was shown between the departure of the electron concentration from a linear combination of the pure component valences and the value of the excess integral molar free energy. Calculation of the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity showed a need for more detailed thermodynamic data in these systems and led to suggestions for improvement in the concept of residual resistivity in the fluctuation scattering model. THE electrical resistivity of liquid metals provides information regarding interatomic interactions and their effects upon structure. In this experiment an electrodeless technique was used to measure the electrical resistivities of liquid alloys of Cd-Bi, Cd-Sn, Cd-Pb, In-Bi, and Sn-Bi, and the results were used with thermodynamic data to calculate a parameter which reflects the tendency toward localization of electrons due to compositional ordering. It was found that the resistivities of these alloys are generally metallic in magnitude and temperature dependence. The electrical and thermodynamic properties are discussed in terms of the fluctuation scattering model'22 which supposes that the electrical resistivity arises from scattering due to a static average structure and departures from the average due to fluctuations in density and composition. Further, this model is compared with the pseudopotential scattering model of Ziman et al.3-5 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloy samples were prepared from 99.999 pct pure elements obtained from American Smelting and Refining Company (except tin which was obtained from Consolidated Smelting and Refining Company.) Manuscript submitted May 31, 1968. EMD Weighed portions were sealed inside evacuated silica capsules, melted, and homogenized before the resistivity was measured. The resistivity of a liquid alloy was measured by placing the sample inside a solenoid and noting the change in Q. According to the method of Nyburg and ~ur~ess,~ the resistivity of a cylindrical sample may be determined from the change in resistance of a solenoid measured with a Q meter as T7--5--W =R7JT^ ='Kc-lm(Y) [1] where L, R, and Q = wL/R are the inductance, series resistance, and Q of the solenoid. The subscript s refers to the solenoid with the sample inside; the subscript 0 refers to the empty solenoid. Kc is the ratio of the sample volume to coil volume and y = 2 [bei'0(br)-j ber'o(br)~\ br\_bero(br) +j bei0 (br) expressed with Kelvin functions which are the real and imaginary parts of Bessel functions of the first kind with arguments multiplied by (j)3'2. The argument of the function Y is hr where r is the sample radius and b2 = po~/p, i.e., the permeability of free space times 271 times the frequency divided by the resistivity in rationalized MKS units. Since Eq. [I] cannot be solved explicitly for p, values of Kc. lm(Y) were tabulated at increments of 0.1 in the argument by. A measurement of Q, and Q, determined a value of Kc . lm (Y) and the corresponding value of br could be read from the table. From the known r, uo,, and w, the resistivity, p, was determined. The change in Q was measured after letting the encapsulated Sample reach equilibrium inside a copper wire solenoid. The solenoid was contained in an evacuated vycor tube in order to retard oxidation of the copper while operating at high temperatures and heated inside a 5-sec-tion nichrome tube furnace capable of obtaining 900°C. Temperature was determined with two chromel-alumel thermocouples, one in contact with the solenoid 30 mm above the top of the sample and the other inserted in an axial well at the other end of the solenoid and secured with cement so that the junction was 2 mm below the bottom of the sample. Temperature readings were taken with respect to an ice water bath junction, and the voltage could be estimated to the nearest thousandth of a millivolt. The lower thermocouple was calibrated by observing its voltage and the Q of the coil as the temperature passed through the melting points of samples of indium and tellurium. The upper thermocouple reading was systematically different from the lower thermocouple reflecting the temperature difference due to a displacement of 60 mm axially and 6 mm radially. Calculations show that the gradient over the sample was less than 2 deg. Q was measured by reading a voltage related to Q from a Boonton 260A Q meter with a Hewlett Packard

Recent structural interpretations based on historic stope shapes were used to develop a rapid and innovative method to domain and simulate structurally complex, high-grade gold veins at depth in the Edna May deposit. This involved ‘implicit’ modelling of drill hole data using Leapfrog software, which allows complex wireframe domains to be built and updated rapidly, compared to ‘explicit’ manual wireframing methods that are too subjective and time consuming. Conditional simulation was used for resource estimation, in order to simulate the highly variable gold grades associated with the veins. Similar modelling methods could be used to determine the mining potential of other historic gold deposits that are receiving renewed interest because of the high gold price.Gold at Edna May is hosted in the Edna May Gneiss, which is a WNW-striking tonalitic intrusion along a shear zone that dips approximately 45° towards the NNE. Gold occurs in multiple 0.5 - 5 m thick arcuate quartz veins that plunge steeply towards the west. Two phases of historic underground mining at Edna May (1911 to 1922 and 1935 to 1947) produced 360 000 ounces of gold at an average grade 19.5 g/t from seven ‘reefs’ to a depth of 240 m. This established Edna May as one of the highest grade gold mines in Western Australia at the time.Recent drilling by Catalpa Resources confirmed the potential for down-plunge continuity of high-grade veins. New structural interpretations, based on historic level maps and wireframe re-constructions of the arcuate stope shapes, were used as ‘structural trends’ in Leapfrog to model the mineralisation. The resulting wireframes capture the complex distribution of gold in the deposit and were used as domains for resource estimation.Conditional simulation using the Turning Bands method was used to simulate the expected variability of gold grades associated with this mineralisation style and the median of the 100 realisations was used to report an inferred resource. Results of this modelling method are being used to target vein extensions at depth, to consider different underground mining scenarios, and to assess the risks associated with developing and mining this high-grade and high-nugget gold deposit.

ANDREW FLETCHER, newly elected Treasurer and Director, has spent his entire mining career in the employ of the St. Joseph Lead Co. and brings to the Institute Board a career rich in financial experience and varied in interest and accomplishment. "Drew" Fletcher was born in New York City on Feb. 6, 1895. After graduating from the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale in 1916 as a mechanical engineer, he became a shipyard mechanic in Wilmington, Del. The next thirteen years saw. him gradually enlarging his responsibilities until he ultimately became the head of the W. & A. Fletcher Co., in Hoboken, N. J., ship repairers. In 1929 his program for merging the Fletcher plant with five other New York shipyards was finally consummated in the formation of the United Dry Docks, Inc., which subsequently was purchased by Bethlehem Steel, with the result that today the old Fletcher yard and organization has been expanded into one of the finest ship repair units in the United States.

In recent years, with the increase of the number of high-rise buildings that are proposed and being built in Central Florida especially in Downtown Orlando, Augered Pressure Grouted Displacement (APGD) piles became a pronounced foundation option. The APGD pile is a bored displacement pile that does not result in drilling spoil. APGD piles are mostly suited for loose to medium granular soils and slightly silty/clayey sandy materials, such as those encountered in Central Florida. The case history presented in this paper involves the APGD piles recommended for a 35-story mixed-use condominium in Downtown Orlando. The subsoil condition was typical for the region; that is loose to medium fine sands underlain by thin layer of plastic sandy clays and plastic clays followed by mixed clayey sands and sandy clays with phosphates and traces of shells transitioned to the weathered limestone. Four APGD test piles were installed and were, statically, tested. Three of the tested piles failed to support the design load. Analysis of load test results showed that the bottom half of the test piles, below the plastic clay deposits, was not effective, which was attributed to structural deficiency resulted from possible pile necking due, in our opinion, to the increase of the porewater pressure within the plastic clays. Three additional test piles were constructed with modified reinforcement cage; that is to extend beyond the plastic clays with tighter stirrups. The additional test piles were, statnamically, tested and were able to sustain the design loads. The construction of the APGD piles through subsoil conditions similar to those of Downtown Orlando, where plastic clayey deposits are encountered, should account for the high porewater pressures that mostly will be developed within the plastic clay, hence, may cause pile necking. Extending the cage to penetrate through and pass the plastic clays reduced the necking potential and improved the test piles performance.

"Electrochemical studies were performed to silver recovery from industrial wastes (radiographic films) on litanium flat electrode using a filter press-type electrochemical reactor with vertical orientation (known as REOV-01), as counter electrode was used a mesh-type DSA. Voltammetric studies were employed to fmd the current range under which silver reduction occurs. Using chronopotentiometric studies with controlled current, homogeneous deposits were obtained on the surface of the Ti electrode, to a current of -210 mA during 120 minutes to a constant linear flow velocity of 15 Lmin-1 was achieved 97% of silver recovery from industrial wastes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy studies corroborated the presence of silver on Ti flat electrode. In addition, the silver concentration in the solution after the experiments was 1 ppm below environmental requirements. This indicates the viability of a filter press-type electrochemical reactor with vertical orientation (REOV-01) for silver recovery from radiographic filmsIntroductionIn recent years, the industrial sector has shown an increase in the use of silver due to new applications in different areas. In sectors such as photography, the consumption of silver has declined as a result of the boom in digital photography. However, the use of silver in radiographic applications has not shown greater variation (47.16 Moz), as the image quality is essential for diagnosis in various fields, such as medicine. All the silver used in photographic applications is discarded completely (solid or in effluent). At the present, several countries have been involved in silver recovering from industrial wastes due to the economic value and environmental impact they represent. The main source of silver recovery is the wastes generated by the photographic sector. Various technologies have attempted to recover silver contained in these wastes. However, they have not fully satisfied the requirements of maximum recovery, nor environmental level (less than 5 ppm) of silver in effluents [1,2]."

In the recent past there have been dramatic advancements in the development of remote sensing platforms (satellite, aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles – UAVs) as well as sensor systems (multispectral, hyperspectral, thermal, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and radar). However, selection of the appropriate remote sensing technique for a mining application is complex and requires scrutiny on multiple scales including spatial, temporal and imaging capabilities. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated CaF2-assisted H2SO4 leaching to extract Mn from domestic silicate manganese resources. A pyroxmangite ((Mn,Fe)Sio3) ore containing, in pct, 34 Mn, 23 Si, 3 Ca, and 1 Fe was leached at 90° C for 3 h in a solution containing, in g/L, 12 Mn, 140 H2SO4, 130 (NH4)2SO4, and 5 CaFz. Manganese extraction of 92 pct was achieved. Manganese of greater than 99 pct purity was prepared by electrolyzing the purified pregnant solution at a current density of 50 mA/cm2. The current efficiency was 65 pct.

A new filtration model based on porous media transport theory is presented. It predicts capacity and final moisture content in the filtered cake as a function of design and operational variables at the plant. FilterSim® is the computer code where this new model is programmed. Application of FilterSim® to ten-month operation of an industrial copper concentrate filtration plant is shown on a daily basis and using a single set of internal parameters for the whole period. Average error is less than 5%, both in capacity and moisture estimation. FilterSim® abilities to optimize industrial filtration plants as well as to estimate future budgets are illustrated with several real examples.

"Los Bronces had two ROM dump leach operations designated Leach I and Leach II. Leach I was commissioned in 1998 and stopped in 2014 due to the mine requirements. Leach II plant, commissioned in early 2002, was built to treat around 700 million tons of marginal ROM ore averaging 0.45 % total copper. The mineralogy of this material was estimated to be 70% chalcopyrite, 20% chalcocite/covellite and the balance oxides.The original electrowinning plant design capacity for copper production was nominal 19,500 tonnes per year at a current density of 276 A/m2 and a current efficiency of 92%. Presently, Los Bronces San Francisco plant typically operates at current densities between 390 and 440 A/m2, much higher than the average in the industry, with current efficiencies around 93% and a maximum copper cathodes production of 37,200 tonnes per year.In order to accomplish these achievements, a number of modifications in the process conditions, in the cell hardware and in the operational procedures have been implemented. In the first case, the specific flowrate, copper concentration and temperature of the electrolyte were modified to accommodate the operational requirements facilitating the increased current density. Associated with the cell hardware, a six cells expansion was added, upgraded equipotential inner cell busbars were installed and the cross section of the cathode hanger bars was enlarged for increased current carrying capacity. Documented operational procedures like short circuit detection and cathode weight control were improved.The modifications implemented and the results obtained are discussed in this paper.INTRODUCTIONLos Bronces Division of Anglo American Chile is located up in the Andes Mountains, northeast of Santiago. It had two cathode plants, Los Bronces at an altitude of 3500 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.) commissioned in 1998 and closed in 2014 and San Francisco at an altitude of 2800 m.a.s.l. and in operation since 2002.The process is leaching run off mine (ROM) low grade copper sulphide ore in dumps. The mineralogy of this material was estimated to be 70% chalcopyrite, 20% chalcocite/covellite and the balance oxides. The average grade is 0.45% total copper (Cut).At Los Bronces dump, Leach I plant, the pregnant leach solution (PLS) was collected and stored in an underground reservoir. From there, it was fed to a solvent extraction plant with a series-parallel configuration in two extraction stages and one stripping stage. The electrolyte produced was fed to the electrowinning plant having 30 cells and 60 cathodes per cell. Maximum capacity of this plant was 12,000 tonnes per year (tpy)."

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known measured and indicated recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and (3) to study the carbonizing properties of coal and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making. This is the tenth of a series of reports giving the results of studies by counties under part (1) of the investigation. (See appendix.) This report covers Knott County, Ky., which comprises parts of the Salyersville, Prestonsburg, Troublesome, Hindman, Pikeville, Cornettsville, and Whitesburg quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A base map for each bed in each quadrangle was made to the scale 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, locations of drill holes, bed and total coal thicknesses, and the outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds up to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and over 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into "measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and category, mined-out areas, areas excluded from the estimate but which may contain reserves based only on geologic inference, and areas outside of the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps. Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

"An LHD teleoperation and guidance system, developed at the Ontario Division of Inco Limited, has been demonstrated in operation at Copper Cliff North Mine (CCNM) since late September, 1993. The tests performed to date have evaluated the feasibility and production viability of multiple LHD operation, from surface by one operator.The systems technology required to accomplish this consists of an electronic monitoring and control package mounted on the LHD; a high bandwidth mining computer network capable of providing radio frequency coverage; and an operator control console which provides an operator workstation for multiple LHD operation.This paper discusses the systems required to accomplish the task of LHD teleoperation and guidance, the benefits of multiple machine operation and future research and development directions. IntroductionSince underground mining began, persolU1el have entered the mine workings to mine ore. Today, however, the rapid advancement of modem telecommunications, computer hardware and software technology has opened the door to remote mining technology that was considered unfeasible a few years ago. This paper discusses the ingredients of remote mining technology that have been developed at Inco Limited.Figure I represents an historical view of the application of electronics to LHD operation at Inco Limited. In 1980, the first radio remote controls for the operation of LI-IDs in large open stopes were tested. The successful application of this technology at Inco went hand-in-hand with the development and application of the Vertical Crater Retreat mining method. The combination of these two advances had a very positive effect on the productivity in the mid-eighties at Inco. In 1991, the Mines Research Department of the Ontario Division advanced remote control technology by developing a high capacity underground mining telecommunications system. This system is capable of moving voice, data and video information throughout the mine workings. The system is based on broadband communication technology found in most automated factories, with the added benefit of providing the information to and from mobile equipment through radio interfaces. The first test of the system consisted of an operator teleoperating a single LHD (on the 3000 ft level) from the surface. Rotary kilns have been in service in the gold industry to regenerate carbon for 65 years. At the time oxide ores with gold head grades of 8 to 10 g/t were being treated. Carbon could be regenerated adequately at 650°C and solution losses were less than 1%. Forty years ago, research indicated that heavily fouled carbon from flotation circuits had to be held at 750 to 850°C for ten to twenty minutes for full reactivation (Avraamides and La Brooy, 1987), gold head grades were typically 5 g/t and solution losses typically 0.02 ppm – still less than 1%. In 2017 it was determined (Claflin et al., 2017) that a residence time of less than 1 minute at 750°C can be adequate to reactivate carbon fouled with organics sufficiently to achieve 0.005 ppm solution losses in a flotation tailings leach plant.With the potential for discovery head grades to drop below 0.6 g/t, solution losses of 0.02 ppm represent over 3% loss. Tight operation of the whole carbon circuit is required to keep gold solution losses below 1% going forward.There are alternatives to a rotary carbon kiln, e.g. vertical kilns of which the Minfurn, Rintoul and Combustion Air kilns are examples. The alternative kilns can be heated using electrical heating elements, induction, and microwave. These kilns can operate successfully under the right conditions, however, they are almost exclusively for small carbon throughputs and are not suitable for the large carbon advance rates that are required to process low head grade ore deposits. Large throughput carbon kilns are are almost exclusively fossil fuel fired rotary kilns and the subject of this paper. In the view of the principal author, a fossil fuel fired vertical carbon kiln is preferred to a rotary kiln, however, it is not currently used in the industry.Thermal regeneration of activated carbon has a major impact on gold recovery in the carbon circuit. The carbon kiln and associated equipment constitute 3 to 5% of the capital cost for an oxide processing plant and up to 10% of the capital cost if flotation tails are leached. Despite the capital cost and impact on recovery, the carbon kiln is often poorly selected, operated and maintained.Six years ago Ausenco embarked on the Carbon Kiln Initiative to reduce solution gold losses. This body of knowledge has been published in a series of papers culminating in this paper on how to:1. Select a kiln appropriate for the flowsheet;2. The Bureau of Mines performed a study of the availability of cobalt from market economy countries. The study entailed the detailed analysis of 97 deposits which contain 3.9 billion lb of cobalt at the demonstrated level; in 94 of the deposits cobalt is recovered as a byproduct, and in 3 it is considered the primary product. Since 97 pet of all recoverable cobalt is derived as a byproduct from copper and nickel deposits, the report focused on these two sources. At an assumed market price of $0.89flb for copper, $3.45/lb for nickel, $475/tr 021 for platinum, and $7/lb for cobalt, 1,330 million lb of cobalt at the demonstrated level are potentially available. This total includes 1,105 million lb of cobalt from copper properties, 190 million lb from nickel, 29 million lb from platinum, and 6 million lb from primary cobalt. This analysis indicates that the production cost for 589 million lb of cobalt can be totally covered by the revenues obtained from the other metals produced. The impacts of increases in capital investment and energy costs are also discussed.
