We have had studied CO oxidation on unsupported Au powder (mean particle size, ca.100nm) manufactured by evaporating ultra high purity gold metal (>99.99%) in inert gas and reported that it showed some activity after oxidizing pretreatment in O2 at 423 K?453 K. However, recent XPS analysis of the Au powder revealed that it contains much amount of impurity metals such as Ag and In at levels which far exceed those expected from the impurity level of raw gold metal in the bulk. Several samples of Au powder containing different amount of impurity metals were prepared to examine whether the activity depends upon the existence of surface impurity or not. Activity measurements were performed at 273 K after undergoing the powder under various pretreatment conditions. Although the activity of Au powder varied to some extent according to the pretreatment condition, it is strongly correlated to the surface concentration of Ag. Such dependence was not found for In, indicating that the activity of unsupported Au powder is mainly due to the existence of Ag in the surface layer. The activity attributable to ?particle size effect? was not recognized for Au powder with a mean particle size larger than 80 nm.

Introduction In the following discussion, boiler-feed and mine waters will be considered from the point of view of the problems arising from the chemical nature of the mineral and gaseous impurities they contain. The theories underlying some of these problems will be reviewed for the purpose of getting a clearer concept of the problems themselves. Certain terms of a chemical nature, necessary to the discussion, will be explained on the assumption that they are not generally familiar to mining engineers. Finally, an attempt will be made to correlate theory and practice, with the abject of establishing certain limits to factors relevant to the problems, and to show that these limits are justified by practical experience. The general problems occasioned by the presence of mineral and gaseous impurities in boiler-feed and mine waters are: (1) Scale formation and corrosion in boiler systems. (2) Corrosion of mine pumps and pump fittings. These will be discussed separately. Boiler Scale Typical analyses of waters available for use in steam power-plants are given in the accompanying Table (Table I). All analytical data are expressed in grains per Imperial gallon. The bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium in the raw waters are shown as normal carbonates in the Table. Substances in the first five rows constitute the encrusting solids. All the waters listed in Table I would be classified as 'very good' in the schedule of classification for boiler waters adopted by the American Association of Railway Chemists in 1887. In spite of this classification, however, the waters contain sufficient encrusting solids to cause serious scale trouble after prolonged evaporation.

"This paper discusses a new methodology for defining and measuring mine planning software utilization in the South African gold mining sector within an evolving data-set framework. An initial data-set showing the mine planning software providers, their corresponding software solutions, as well as the software capabilities and information on the number of licences was collected and compiled in 2012 in an online database for software utilized in the South African mining industry. Details of the database development and implementation were published in the Journal of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgyin 2013. In 2014 the data-set was updated with additional and new information. Using the 2012 and 2014 timestamps, a methodology for estimating the software utilization was developed. In this methodology, the three variables of commodity, functionality, and time factor were used to define and measure the software utilization in order to ultimately inform decision-making strategies for optimal software utilization. Using six different functionalities, namely Geological Data Management, Geological Modelling and Resource Estimation, Design and Layout, Scheduling, Financial Valuation, and Optimization, utilization in the gold sector was measured. This paper presents the methodology employed for measuring the mine planning software utilization. The methodology is useful for stakeholders reviewing existing software combinations or intending to purchase new software in the near future and who want to estimate the comparative attractiveness of a certain software package. These stakeholders include mining companies, consulting companies, educational institutions, and software providers. The work presented in this paper is part of a PhD research study in the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand."

"The platinum group metals (PGMs) and associated minerals are particularly refractory to most traditional direct leach processes. However, the remoteness of many new ore deposits, socio-political risks, the scarcity of skilled labor and constraints on the availability of water and electrical power makes it increasingly more difficult to implement the conventional mill-float-smelt-refine process routes to extract and refine PGMs in remote areas. This paper discusses a process to extract PGM’s from low grade ore and concentrate using a sequential stage heap leach process entailing heap bioleaching and high temperature cyanide leaching, and evaluates the feasibility of implementing a carbon-in-pulp process to recover the PGMs from the pregnant leach solution. The heap bioleaching extracts the base metals in an acidic sulfate medium using a mixed culture of thermophiles. After heap bioleaching the heap is reclaimed, rinsed, agglomerated and restacked for high temperature cyanide leaching where the cyanide liquor is directly heated via solar energy in panels. Palladium, gold and platinum are recovered during the cyanide leaching stage. The pregnant leach solution was evaluated for potential carbon-in-pulp adsorption and subsequent elution similar to gold processing. The kinetics of adsorption and elution compared well with gold adsorption and elution."

The laboratory tests evaluated the bag?s effectiveness to contain dust and the effect on canister filter loading in both a bag and bagless condition. The dust emissions from the collector?s exhaust were also measured in each condition during laboratory testing and show that nearly 100% of the test dust fed into the collector was captured by the dust bags. Loading and pressure drop on the dust collector?s canister filter is greatly decreased when using the bags, enabling longer periods of drilling without filter removal/cleaning. The field results showed that, even though dust standards were met, respirable dust in exhausted emissions was reduced around the bolter. Sustainability of the hydrometallurgical industry requires the development of processes for effective water recovery; if process water is recovered and recycled, fresh water intakes will be reduced. Forward osmosis (FO) is an innovative membrane process that promises to recover water from industrial process aqueous streams or seawater with less energy input compared to reverse osmosis (RO) and evaporation; the energy efficiency relies on the spontaneity of the process (no energy input required). The driving force of the process is the osmotic pressure gradient between a dilute feed solution (process water) and a concentrated draw solution. The draw solution is an engineered aqueous solution that contains a highly soluble chemical reagent that is able to osmotically "draw" only water from the dilute stream, through a semi-permeable membrane, leaving behind a small volume of concentrated brine. The draw solute is separated and recovered for reuse, leaving behind water. The main energy requirements of the FO process arise from the separation and the regeneration of the solute chemicals from the diluted draw solution. This work focuses on the evaluation of aqueous carbonated trimethylamine (TMAH:HCO3) as the draw solution and reports recent findings on the separation efficiency of TMA and CO2 from the solution.

"FOREWORD (By O. P. Hood, Chief mechanical engineer).During the war certain suggestions concerning power production were made by Mr. Walter E. Trent to the War Inventions Board, and at the request of the War Department facilities for experimental work were provided on the grounds of the. Bureau of Standards.The experiments were along the line of controlling the conditions of combustion in a closed space. In order to reduce slag troubles, experiments were carried out for removing ash from powdered coal. After the war, work along this line was continued, resulting in the Trent Process, which agitates or beats together powdered coal, water and oil.A new technology had previously been given to ore preparation by the use of small quantities of oil in water with froth flotation, and although the methods, results and mixtures of the Trent Process were quite different, yet the same physical phenomena of differential wetting used, and the possibility of there being interesting results in fuel technologic was evident. A cooperative agreement was entered into, whereby the Bureau of Mines was to investigate the underlying physical and chemical facts and make them public, and the Trent Corporation was to pay the cost of the investigation.The several reports as made have been available to any one interested, and are now to be published. While the Bureau of Mines felt justified in investigating the physical phenomena so far as might be done in a laboratory, and so far as public interest might reach, no attempt was made to discover the commercial possibilities which development might bring. The question of commercial possibilities must be left for commercial enterprise to answer."

Compliance with Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) exposure regulation is currently performed using timeweighted average (TWA) sampling on underground mine workers. These samples are collected in the span of an entire shift and the resulting concentrations are compared to a legislated exposure limit. While this is very useful to determine the exposure level of an individual to DPM, it fails to clearly identify causes of exposure and highlight opportunities that could help reduce the exposure of workers in the course of the work shift. Real-time DPM monitoring measures the worker?s exposure as a function of time and helps identify circumstances where corrective actions can be taken or design changes can be made by the individual or the employer to reduce the overall exposure of the worker and peers. This work focused on obtaining DPM concentrations using a real-time polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) monitor. The aim was to demonstrate that this instrument, while not a direct DPM analyzer, was able to provide a concentration profile that could easily be linearly correlated to standard TWA elemental carbon measurements. In addition, several instances of improvements that could be implemented to reduce the exposure of underground employees were demonstrated.

There are many types of filters designed to separate a solid from a liquid, including plate and frame presses, pressure leaf filters, gravity filters and vacuum filters. This discussion will be limited to continuous vacuum filtration and, specifically, to continuous rotary vacuum disc filters, drum filters and horizontal belt filters. The use of vacuum filtration can be advantageous in that: 1. The feed slurry can be delivered to the filter either by gravity or by a simple, inexpensive low pressure pump that only has to overcome the resistance of the feed piping system. 2. The filter equipment does not have to withstand high pressures. Consequently, a wide range of materials of construction, including plastic and fiberglas reinforced polyester (FRP), can be used in the fabrication. 3. After the form time, the filter cake is exposed to the atmosphere and the cake is accessible for further operations such as mechanical or physical dewatering, washing, and sampling on a continuous basis. 4. The discharge of the dewatered solids is continuous for directly feeding to the next operation; for example, a dryer. 5. Various methods of discharge can be fitted to the filter to effect optimum discharge of the dewatered cake solids. The principal of operation of a vacuum filter, regardless of type, is basically the same. The filter incorporates a filter medium supported on a drainage system and arranged so that the mixture to be separated (feed slurry) can be introduced to one side of the filter medium on which the solids are trapped and through which the liquid (filtrate) flows due to the applied vacuum.

Direct transfer, or community translocation, comprises salvage and replacement of intact æsodsÆ of vegetation together with underlying soil. It has been applied to New Zealand mine sites restoration of native grasslands, wetlands, scrub lands, and forest. It is an equivalent technique to æinstant lawn or tree gardenÆ, commonly used in urban landscaping. Two to six m2 scoops of vegetation, with up to 0.7 m of soil attached, and including root plates of trees and shrubs, are relocated from stripped areas ahead of mining to sites prepared for restoration. Direct transfer uses hydraulic excavators or face shovels and dump trucks, possibly with the aid of bulldozers and other earthmoving machinery. The main advantages of direct transfer, compared with sowing or planting systems for mine site restoration, are the recycling of plant and soil materials which were often wasted by burying under overburden materials, a significantly faster revegetation process, and restoration of the whole ecosystem (plants, animals, birds, invertebrates, and microbes). The main disadvantages are higher costs of stripping and dumping, a greater degree of machine operator skill required, and scheduling becomes critically important. To illustrate the key principles, this paper gives examples of successes and failures of the technique for a variety of New Zealand mining situations. Direct transfer has been successful for a range of communities, from fern wetland and sub-alpine tussock grasslands to 5 m-tall beech forest under storey and seral shrub land, and from temperate to sub-alpine climates. Successful examples show both rapid recovery of indigenous vegetative cover and conservation of habitat for birds and invertebrates. Failures have resulted from excessive death of plants because of inadequate soil salvage depths, acidic leachates, inappropriate handling of stripped sods by inexperienced machinery operators, or prolonged drought conditions immediately following relocation. Change in plant species composition has occurred where clumps of vegetation are too far apart, or shifted plants were too small - in both cases invasive weeds have smothered the original vegetation. Changes in hydrology can also have significant impacts. Our experience indicates that the advantages of direct transfer far outweigh the disadvantages and is now used as the preferred restoration method, where practicable, at mines where it has been trialled.

This paper is a collection of thoughts and frameworks. It addresses a simple question: æIf we are to believe the large number of people and institutions indicating that humans are destroying the Earth and that the end is nigh, why do we bother trying to be sustainable?Æ The paper lays out evidence for the existence of multiple hazards to global society. The existence of a hazard alone is insufficient to make an assessment of risk. Risk estimates are required to support decision-making. An approach to assessing risk is provided and some limited data are presented. A new ædefinitionÆ or statement of what sustainability (in a broad sense) might have become is then given. A decision framework for guiding decision- making about the risks is developed. This framework includes a definition of leadership with inherent implications for what determines whether a leadership position by title is actually leading. The paper concludes by offering a view of minerals industry sustainability and considerations around maturity in the current economic situation. It is hoped that by placing this collection of frameworks around sustainability, a supporting structure emerges that will facilitate action. It is proposed that action taken in this way will be more effective than reaction to regulation or even social license to operate imperatives because it is driven by a more holistic view of the challenges and the potential roles of individuals û all of whom are potential leaders at some scale of action.

THE mechanism of the martensitic transformation has been the subject of a remarkable number of papers in recent years.' Because the task of evaluating all the available theories is a formidable one, the authors will confine themselves merely to the presentation of results of an experimental investigation of the habit orientation, lattice relations, magnitude and direction of average transformation shear strain, and orientation of subband markings for a single variant of the possible habit systems in an 11 pct Mo-Ti alloy. It is hoped that these data will assist in the establishment of a rigorous theory for the mechanism of the martensitic transformation. Experimental Procedure Specimen Preparation: A sample, approximately 1/2 x 1/4 x 1/4 in., was cut from a double arc-melted ingot composed of commercial-process A titanium and high purity molybdenum (nominally, 11 pct Mo). It was capsuled in evacuated Vycor at 10.-3 mm Hg subsequent to a double argon wash and homogenized for 48 hr at 1100°C. After a direct quench into H2O at room temperature, a large-grained specimen resulted, which, by X-ray diffraction and metallographic means, was subsequently shown to be in the body-centered-cubic phase, ß. Two adjacent, approximately perpendicular faces were polished and the ends of the specimen were ground parallel in a V-block. Fiducial lines were inscribed at 45" to the common edge of the polished surfaces in order that they would be perpendicular to the habit traces of the subsequently formed a plates.2 The specimen was then compressed between the ground ends in a Buehler press to stress induce the transformation ß to a'. Experimental Measurements: The habit-plane orientation, the orientation of subband markings, the orientation relation between the parent ß and the product a', and the transformation strain for the same plate were determined. To further establish the nature of the subbands, one surface was repol-ished and etched. The bands in the a' were still visible and were found to be optically anisotropic under polarized light. Back-reflection Laue patterns were obtained from the ß matrix and from a region comprising both a' plates and adjacent ß matrix (a Cu target was used). By superposition of the two X-ray diffraction patterns, it was possible to obtain a tentative orientation relationship between the two phases. This result was confirmed by a pattern taken after the specimen was rotated to make the basal-plane pole of the hexagonal a' phase strike the film. This necessitated cutting the specimen to expose the a' plate in the new position relative to the X-ray beam. Measurements of the quantity of entrained air within processes have challenged instrumentation developers for years. This is particularly true in the unique and demanding operating environment and applications seen in minerals processing. In minerals processing applications, entrained air plays a role in errors seen within nuclear density gauge measurements and in pumping efficiency. It is also the major component of flotation processes. The measurement of the quantity of entrained air, known as the gas void fraction, can now be performed from the outside of a process pipe through CiDRA?s patented passive sonar array-based technology. Within column cells, the need for a robust, no maintenance, accurate means of measuring the entrained air, known as gas holdup, has resulted in a submersible version of this technology. CiDRA?s meter technology calculates the gas void fraction by first measuring the speed at which naturally occurring sound in the process slurry propagates past an axial array of sensors. These sensors are incorporated in a band that is wrapped around the outside of the pipe, resulting in no process downtimes for installation and unprecedented reliability. A known relationship between this speed of sound and the entrained air captured in the form of bubbles within the slurry is then applied in CiDRA?s meter to calculate the gas void fraction. This paper will present the measurement technology, its operation, its calibration and its application in a variety of gas void fraction and gas holdup measurement situations such as pumping efficiencies, hydrocyclone operation, external sparging, and column cells.

In a review of so 40 papers on damage to residential structures resulting from blasting, only 3 were found that present data on the observed amplitude and frequency of the vibration levels produced by blasting together with an observed degree of damage to a residential structure. The data from these three reports have been analyzed statistically to determine if one of the quantities, displacement, velocity, or acceleration, is more reliable than the others for estimating the degree of damage to a residential structure. From this analysis the conclusion is drawn that a given degree of damage to a structure is most closely related to the magnitude of the particle velocity of the wave motion passing thru the earth at the structure location. On the average, only minor damage it observed for peak particle velocities of 5.4 inches per second, and major damage is observed for peak particle velocities of 7.6 inches per second. When the spread of the data is taken into consideration, the following statement can be made: Wave motions that have a peak particle velocity in excess of 2 inches per second have a fair probability of producing some damage to structures, whereas wave motions that have a peak velocity less than 2 inches per second have a very low probability of causing any damage. Therefore, the recommendation is made that vibration levels in the vicinity of residential structures should be maintained below a peat particle velocity of 2 inches per second. The above criterion for safe blasting is considered to hold over a wide variety of soil and rock conditions because the original data were obtained for a wide range of soil and rock conditions and on various types of residential structures. Silver Bell produces about 22,000T of fine copper annually from low-grade chalcocite and oxidized copper ore that is recovered by sulfuric acid leaching and SX-EW processing. The current mineable reserves are 146 million short tons averaging 0.39% Cu, at a 0.15% cutoff. Silver Bell utilizes two types of mining methods to develop the low-grade reserves: (1) a conventional blast, load and haul method for run-of-mine leach ore, and (2) rubblization of material on the margins of existing pits. Rubble leach ore is blasted, terraced with a bulldozer, and leached in place. Mining and/or rubble leaching is currently active in four separate pits. Laramide-age intrusive rocks host porphyry copper mineralization at Silver Bell. Quartz monzonite porphyry dikes and stocks, mafic-poor equigranular granite (alaskite), and sub-volcanic dacite porphyry are the predominant host rocks. Most of the ore currently mined comes from near-horizontal enrichment zones containing veinlets and disseminated grains of pyrite and chalcopyrite rimmed by chalcocite. Conversion from a milling operation to a leach only operation allowed for a much lower cutoff grade than was historically used at Silver Bell. Mine geologists were able to increase copper resources by drilling exploration targets that were previously interpreted to provide lower-grade mineralization below cutoff-grade for milling. Geologic parameters that effect the distribution of rubble and mineable leach ore include: ore grade and thickness, variable alteration styles in intrusive host rocks that affect fragmentation during blasting, acid consuming carbonate wallrocks (reactive skarn) which influence leach solution pH, solution flow paths and drainage, presence of leachable oxide mineralization in non-reactive skarn, and depth to hypogene mineralization which is currently uneconomic. Geologic parameters are used to predict rubble bench limits, vary blast hole spacing for consistent fragmentation, and correct errors in mineral zone classification based solely on blast hole assays. An expansion-drilling program has identified approximately 150 million tons of new leachable copper resources with an average grade of 0.35% Cu.

Current practice for the recovery of platinum group metals (PGM) from flotation concentrates is by energy-intensive smelting processes followed by separation and refining of the base and precious metals. Energy costs are rapidly increasing in South Africa and this trend is forecast to continue in future years. Moreover, the smelting operations are highly susceptible to deleterious constituents, particularly chromite; and the increasing tonnages of UG2 chromititic ore being mined results in an increasing chromite content of smelter feeds. Hence there is a substantial incentive to assess and implement alternative processes to smelting for the treatment of PGM concentrates. The Kell process is a patented hydrometallurgical alternative to smelting that is totally insensitive to the chromite content of the feed concentrate and comprises three commercially proven unit operations (pressure oxidation leaching of base metals and sulfur, roasting and chlorination of precious metals). The Kell process provides the opportunity for existing and new PGM producers to significantly reduce their energy consumption, and in particular their consumption of electricity, by removing the need to smelt PGM concentrates. Energy costs, greenhouse gas emissions and installed power requirements are also much reduced. Compared with smelting and refining these reductions are calculated as: ? Total energy consumption-50% reduction ? Electrical energy consumption-84% reduction ? Energy consumption costs-76% reduction ? C02 emissions-70% reduction ? Installed power requirement 92% reduction. The data obtained from simple laboratory batch amenability testing can be readily applied to the Simulus mass and energy balance simulation procedure to determine energy and reagent consumptions, equipment selection and process optimization. The applicability of Kell to treating low-grade 'dirty' concentrates with high UG2 content as well as to polymetallic concentrates containing base metals as the major payable metals with subordinate PGM means that these savings can also be expected when the process is used for treating a range of concentrate types and grades. Water is important commodity in the mining industry. Water is used in the many stages of mining from the exploration stages and drilling, to mine development and operation and finally throughout mine rehabilitation and post mine activities. With the use of water throughout the life span of a mine, its management is an important component in the operation of any mine. Unfortunately the use of water within the operations can be one of the major sources of pollution generated from a mine. Such contamination can occur via numerous mechanisms including ground water flow, over land flow and accidents. Contamination may occur in any stage of mining operations, for example a leaking or failed tailings dam. With the above in mind, the paper presented will focus upon the use and management of water in the mining industry: ownership rights of water û common law as well as legislative rights; a review and analysis of the existing Queensland legislation and its mechanisms for the protection of water pollution from mining operations; and conclusions drawn from the paper relating to the Queensland legislation.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the hydraulic stimulation of a gob-degasification borehole to determine if this procedure would aid in degasifying a longwall panel. The stimulated borehole did not degasify the longwall panel as expected either before or after mining of the panel started. It reduced the underground methane emission only 11 pct, considerably less than the reductions effected by two unstimulated boreholes in the same panel. Some probable reasons for the reduced methane flow from the hydraulically stimulated borehole are very low reservoir gas pressure, location of hydraulically stimulated zones within the grouted casing, a casing break caused by lateral shifting, possible vertical movement of rock strata during caving, grouting of a 4-inch pipe blocking three stimulated zones, plasticity of shales, and possible hole damage by swelling of water-sensitive minerals. The borehole was also located between two second-mined areas, which may have allowed partial degasification of the overburden and the coalbed in advance of mining. Finally, a period of 3 months is probably not long enough for the borehole to degasify the overburden before mining.
