The West German Ruhrkohle AG and the engineering company BEDIA have developed an emission control system for diesel engines that is suitable for use in underground coal mining, consisting of a granular catalytic converter and a dry cooling system. Its first ever application was to a diesel mining locomotive. In the catalytic converter the exhaust gases pass over porous, platinum-covered ceramic balls in a double tube, oxidizing CO to CO2. Simultaneously, soot particles in the gases are subjected to afterburning. Laboratory tests carried out by BEDIA and at Aachen University of Technology showed that there was a reduction of over 80% in the CO content of the exhaust gases and over 30% in soot emission. The dry cooling system fulfills all the requirements demanded of exhaust cooling underground and does not have the disadvantages of conventional systems. It needs little maintenance, and it is light and compact. The most important components are a waterjacketed exhaust manifold, a tube and shell heat exchanger, a new type of flame arrestor in a stacked crimped ribbon design and a Venturi diluter. The system has its own thermostatically-controlled cooling circuit to keep the exhaust temperature between 120° C and 150° C, thus effectively preventing the tubes becoming blocked up.

If the economic situation in the Western World evolves on a path similar to that of the past decade, then we Mining Engineers must accept that one of the major cost factors in the production of deep mined coal is going to be that of labour. Whilst not trying to over-simplify matters it does appear that one of the ways of maintaining acceptable coal costs is by obtaining more coal without increasing manpower. One such way could be an increase in the use of the retreat method of mining. The paper theorises and illustrates case studies to show that as the Mining Industry extends the use of Longwall retreat mining systems in coal seams where the risk of spontaneous combustion exists, then the use of bleeder entries should be questioned. In addition to the spontaneous combustion risk, bleeder entry systems where the ventilation flow is not fully controllable cannot be construed as a safe and reliable method of controlling high rates of methane emission. These two major aspects alone should be sufficient ground for Mining Engineers to re-consider the practice of using bleeder entries. An alternative "The Back Return System" appears to offer most of the advantages for controlling the environment, without the disadvantages of the other system.

Past investigations into the possibility of concentrating the low-grade iron ores of the Gogebic Range in Wisconsin have been hampered by the complex association of the constituent minerals. In part the problem arises from the fact that the iron occurs essentially as two minerals, hematite and goethite, having nearly the same chemical composition but exhibiting different physical properties. Individual grains of these minerals are usually so small that the ore must be ground to a size finer than 325 mesh if substantial liberation of the minerals is to be secured. Appraisal of beneficiation tests on this iron ore requires, therefore, some method of determining quantitatively the contents of constituent minerals in the various products of the beneficiation. Because of the chemical similarity of the two iron minerals, chemical analyses do not provide a means of differentiation. Although the minerals are different physically, they are both opaque and friable, and as the ore must be ground to a very fine size for liberation to be secured, quantitative microscopic methods of analysis are extremely difficult at best. In an effort to overcome these analytical problems, a quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis method has been developed at the University of Wisconsin for the research program on iron ore beneficiation.

"This paper shows how simple reliability concepts such as mean time between failures and mean repair time can be used efficiently to help increase equipment availability and so reduce the economic losses associated with unreliability.More specifically, the paper shows how these simple concepts can be used in maintaining an appropriate balance between fleet failure and repair rates and how they can be used for setting up priority repair rules f or queuing equipment.IntroductionA profitable mining operation must handle large quantities of ore and waste at the lowest possible cost. To achieve this objective, the operation must optimize the productivity of its fleets of equipment by efficient management of the time element. Figure I shows some basic equipment activities in an open pit operation while Figure 2 shows a tree diagram describing some time elements of these activities.It should be noted that the only time a piece of equipment can generate a profit is when it can be found in the operating status. In order to maximize this time element, the sum of the other time elements must be minimized because the total time is always fixed.This paper shows the application of simple techniques capable of reducing the waiting time for repair (maintenance delay) by using simple reliability concepts."

Many Third World countries of Third World Africa are well-endowed with minerals, especially gold. Political and economic conditions discouraged interest by Western capital for the several decades since colonial rule. Influence from Eastern Block countries has gone and the left wing orientation widely favored by Third World countries has almost disappeared. Under International Monetary Fund influence, these countries now solicit Western finance to expand their industries. Mining is especially encouraged. The paper describes the financing of some recent developments and examines trends and opportunities in some of the more attractive countries.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines assessed mineral resources of the BLM Malheur-Jordan Resource Areas (MJRAs) in southeastern Oregon in 1993 and 1994. The study relied heavily on acquiring and analyzing existing data. In order to efficiently handle and analyze a large quantity of data, a minerals information management program, informally called MINFO, was developed as a frontend for three databases created to store basic information gathered during the minerals resource assessment. The MINFO program will also provide the BLM with a method of tracking and updating minerals information in the future because program modules in MINFO allow the addition of new data and the correction of errors, creation of print files, transfer of data to other database formats, exportation of data to other software packages, and creation of AutoCAD script files to be used in conjunction with AutoCAD to produce maps. The report specifically identifies significant past and present mineral exploration and development activities and possible areas of future mineral exploration and development. These areas are informally designated as areas of development interest or ADIs. The report contains a scenario of what mineral development might reasonably occur in the foreseeable future if the BLM does not substantially change its present resource management plan, and it shows the possible socioeconomic impacts of that development. The uncertainty of the political and economic situation makes it extremely challenging for the USBM to accurately predict a reasonably foreseeable development scenario. The reasonably foreseeable development (RFD) scenario developed by the USBM for the BLM indicates short-term RFD of minerals should have a negligible socioeconomic impact, and longer-term RFD of minerals should have a slight socioeconomic impact on the MJRAs. The mining industry is facing a rapidly changing business and regulatory environment in Oregon. Several signal changes have occurred recently, including State regulations that require significant bonding prior to the startup of "chemical process" mining, an initiative by a special interest group to stop all chemical process gold mining within the State, and an opinion by the Oregon Attorney General (AG) banning all forms of placer mining without exemption. In the AG opinion, not even gold panning is allowed, and the prohibition applies to mining claims on Federal lands. The State legislature may amend the statute to allow small scale placer mining to occur, as was allowed under an AG opinion issued in 1982. These and other changes occurring at the local, State, and National levels are making it more challenging for the mining industry to operate in the United States. Several epithermal gold properties in the MJRAs attracted the mining industry's interest. Only the Grassy Mountain Project of Newmont Grassy Mountain Corporation may be developed in the next few years. It is probable that at least two other properties will be developed if Grassy Mountain is successful. Mining companies are waiting to see the effect recently promulgated State mining regulations and more stringent proposed regulations, particularly bonding regulations, may have on Grassy Mountain. Resources of bentonite, diatomite, and zeolite are abundant. The almost Ubiquitous stone, sand and gravel, and semiprecious gemstone resources also were examined. Little environmental or socioeconomic impact is expected from reasonably foreseeable development of these mineral resources.

For the roadway design in the German hard coal mining industry, an advanced combined planning system has been applied during the past 20 years. The German mining industry is working with single entry roadways system. After first longwall passage the roadways will be stabilised with side wall building material packages. Later this roadway will be used again for the second retreating longwall. The intention of the implementation of several different design methods for the planning of the roadways is to enhance the reliability of the results. On one hand the planning system uses numerical simulation and physical modelling in addition to analytical and empirical methods. On the other hand in-situ monitoring and analysis during the roadway development will be used to verify and calibrate the numerical and physical models. Especially before the implementation of new support elements in underground, this system is suitable and reasonable because the new support elements will be tested in the physical and numerical simulation prior to cost intensive underground tests. The interaction between the numerical and physical modelling in comparison with underground monitoring and analysis during development and the later use of roadways will be shown with some examples. The first example shows a rock bolted rectangular roadway which will be mined at both sides of the roadway. Different support and roadway building material package systems are investigated under various stress conditions. The results are utilised to optimise the roadway support and the roadway side package systems. The influence of different points in time of the installation of several support elements in a combined arch and bolted roadway is shown as another example. Two different types of support systems are compared within the physical models. These models are used as a base for ongoing numerical analysis and simulation to find out the ideal point of time to assemble the different support elements. The last example handles the influence of slickensides in the roof of arch shaped roadway on their stability. Different slickenside positions and densities are investigated and classified.

"The paper presents a analysis of the history and the trends of development of flotation apparatus. The laws of their evolution are stated and the place and role of column flotation are indicated. It is demonstrate development and different design of column apparatus. The major parameters of column cell such as diameter and height are discussed. Options are proposed on optimization of hydrodynamic characteristics of columns with large-capacity cells. High efficiency of columns with cell height of 4-6 m is shown on examples of coal preparation. A new generation of multi sectional column cells has been developed. In the cells are zones with different aerohydrodynamic parameters: combined in the machine are co-and counter- counter flows of phases. The transition from single-chamber column to multi-sectional apparatus makes it possible to create favourable hydrodynamic and aeration regimes in each section of the column dependent on the pattern of material distribution by floatability. Efficiency of application different designs column apparatus uses shown on the example of enrichment of various non-ferrous metals ores and coal. The principles of mathematical simulation of the flotation process are developed. A scaling-up procedure for column cells was based on flotation macro- and micro- dynamics simulation.INTRODUCTIONColumn flotation is considered to be one of the most significant achievement in the field of mineral processing in the end of last century. We cannot but agree with this statement but would like to understand what underlies this success. History of the flotation column can not be considered in isolation from the development of flotation apparatus on the whole. It can be argued that the first attempt to switch from oil flotation to the use of bubbles during flotation was performed Bessel brothers in 1877 (Berlin patent 42 class 22, July 2) and in 1886 (Berlin patent 39,369 May 12). According to these patents, the crushed ore was mixed with oils , hydrocarbons and water. Then the pulp received in this way was heated up to boiling . Air bubbles and steam formed during boiling facilitate the flotation of ore particles coated with oil (first patent) or bubbles been generated by the reaction of lime with acid (second patent). The evolution in the design of the flotation apparatus incorporates the following key stages. Further development is connected with the Francis Elmore’s idea to use gas bubbles received at water electrolysis (UK, 13578; 1904). This method was not introduced then, but much later, in our time and on the essentially new technical basis it found a use for sewage treatment (electroflotation). Gas bubbling under vacuum patented also by Elmore (UK, 17816; 1904) obtained a practical use. It should be noted that the method did not lose its importance till now. The design of the camera has been surely optimized (Glembotskii etal, 1963). A year later A. Macquisten (UK, 26712) developed pressure (compression) flotation. Thus, the H.Sulman, H.Picard, D. Bell’s (US, 853120, May 29, 1905) basic patent and the adjoining T. Goover’s patent 1910 (US, 953746) formed the basis of the first and most important element of modern flotation: flotation with air bubbles sucked in from the environment. In 1914, J.Callow received a patent for on an apparatus where air was sparged through the porous false bottom of the cell ( US, 1104755). Woolen fabric folded four times was fixed on a perforated metal frame to be used for air sparging (Gaudin, 1932). The following year Durrel created the prototype of the injection (ejector) apparatus. The jet aerator made it possible to significantly reduce the size of the bubbles, in comparison with the filter cloth. An apparatus with slurry pre-aeration in an airlift prior to feeding into separation cell was developed Wagner in 1917 (US, 1235083). And finally, the first column apparatus with a counter-current of slurry and air was developed by M. Towne and S. Flynn in 1919(US, 1,295,817). ("

Widespread high-calcium limestones in New Mexico region are low -in magnesium, but some units include shale interbeds deleterious for sulfur removal usage. Thick limestones in Mississippian Escabrosa, Lake Valley, and Leadville, Pennsylvanian Madera and Hermosa, Pennsylvanian-Permian Horquilla, Permian Hueco and Capitan, Cretaceous U-Bar, and some Cenozoic travertines are high-calcium units. Significant outcrops are in mountains of southwestern, south-central, central, southeastern and north-central New Mexico, southeastern Arizona, southwestern Colorado, and northwestern Chihuahua. Coal-fired powerplants are mainly in northwestern New Mexico and eastern Arizona, thus transport is mainly by railroad.

The Front Range portion of the Colorado Mineral Belt is an extensive area of mineralization with mining activity dating from 1859 with the discovery of large gold deposits. After an initial boom period and gradual diminishing production, present activity is restricted to molybdenum in Clear Creek County, uranium in Jefferson County, and several small operations extracting gold and silver in Clear Creek and Gilpin Counties. Gold and silver have dominated the production in the Front Range, though the complex mineralization created milling and smelting problems and it is postulated that considerable amounts of precious metals remain in the mine dumps. This area is plagued by a severe mine drainage problem, with Clear Creek most impacted by many draining mines and tailings in the basin. Boyles et al. Moran and Wentz, Wentz, Wildeman et al., have examined various aspects of the impact of mine drain¬age in the Clear Creek basin. The primary objective of this study was to collect data on the tailings, drainages, and leaching experiments in order to make preliminary suggestions for reducing the impact while recovering metal values to offset treatment costs. A variety of leaching experiments were performed on tailings from the Nevada Gulch area in the Central City mining district. Leachings were performed in vertical tubes indoors and wooden boxes exposed to the outside environment. In the leaching experiments, the leaching solution, grain size, and residence times were varied, while forced aeration was used in some experiments. Bacterial nutrient 9K° and mine drainage were used in some of the experiments. A total of 14 additional tailings samples were analyzed for base and precious metals. The composition of the mine drainage and tailings used in the leaching experiments, as well as data on the additional samples are shown in [Table 1]. Leachate samples were taken periodically for analysis until compositions leveled off. Results and Discussion Leaching with distilled water was used as a control and best illustrates the basic behavior of the leaching process for zinc in a vertical tube [(Fig. 1)]. More acidic leachings increased concentrations of metals as did smaller grain sizes, though the time required increased significantly. Mine drainage with its high concentration of dissolved iron sometimes decreased the heavy-metal concentration in the leachate due to oxidation of Fe 2 and precipitation of Fe(OH)9 which absorbs some of the dissolved heavy metals. In the larger scale experiment carried out in the simulated leaching pad, substantial concentrations of metals were attained in the final leachate after one month. In this experiment the leachate was not recycled, but allowed to saturate the tailings continually with evaporation loss made up by additions of Quartz Hill drainage and nutrient 9K. The concentration of the metals in the leachate and the increase over the input solution are given in [Table 2]. Heap leaching of low-grade copper and uranium ores is successfully carried out in many districts, enhanced by the metabolism of autotrophic bacteria of the Thiobacillus-Ferrobacillus group. These ubiquitous organisms enhance metal leaching, and general aspects of heap leaching are discussed by Malouf, Trudinger, Pings, and Duncan et al. Conclusions and Recommendations Returning to the primary objective, how to reduce the mine drainage impact and recover metal values, we need to consider how the data may suggest avenues toward this objective. The kinetics of precipitation deoxidation is considered from a theoretical point of view. The size distribution and the total content of deoxidation products are estimated statistically as a function of time, taking into account Stokes and gradient collisions between the particles and separation at the top surface of the bath. The assumption is made that two particles coalesce into one larger particle as a result of a collision. General expressions are derived and calculations are carried out numerically for the case of silica particles in liquid iron. The analysis predicts a three-stage behavior for the removal of oxygen, an incubation stage, a stage of rapid separation, and a slow final stage where the content approaches the equilibrium value. The agreement with experimentally determined size distributions and deoxidation times is considered to be good. A quantitative estimation of such growth mechanisms as diffusion from the melt and redistribution of oxygen from small particles to large ones shows that these latter mechanisms cannot explain the experimentally observed gvowth of inclusions. This also indicates that collisions provide the important growth mechanism. OXIDE inclusions precipitate when a deoxidizer like silicon or aluminum is added to a steel bath. The inclusions grow and the large particles tend to separate from the bath. For each type of oxide the growth determines the sizes of the final inclusions as well as the total inclusion content of the steel. The mechanism of growth is controversial, however. It has been suggested that an inclusion grows principally by diffusion of atoms through the melt to the inclusion particle or principally by collisions and coalescence with other inclusions. Diffusion growth is always present to some extent but recent experiments and calculations by Torssell,' Kniippel et 'a1.,2 Sano et al. and Miya-shita4 indicate that collisions may be more important than previously realized. A detailed analysis has so far been lacking. The present paper is a quantitative, statistical analysis of the growth and separation of inclusions and is based on a collision theory. Nuclea-tion is not considered. The numerical estimates are based on the experimental conditions of Torssell's' investigation and comparisons are made with his observations. Torssell' studied the growth and separation of silica particles in liquid iron. Samples were taken from a 0.6 kg iron bath at various times after the addition of silicon. By a particle-counting technique developed by Bergh and Lindber~the size distribution of the inclu- sions was determined. The number of particles at the first sampling, 10 sec after silicon addition, was of the order of 3 x lo7 to 10' per cu cm, the largest particles having a radius of 2 to 4 pm. The volume fraction was 0.001 to 0.004; i.e., the dispersion was very dilute. During subsequent holding the largest particles increased their radius by a factor of 10 after about a minute, and the whole size distribution was displaced toward larger values. These results were obtained with allowance for precipitation of the equilibrium concentration of oxygen during solidification. The bath contained less than 0.01 pct of C. Figs. 1 and 2 show the typical appearance of the inclusions. Most particles are very closely spherical and appear to have been liquid or semiliquid in the melt. The observed number of inclusions, about 5x 10' per cu cm, is of the same order of magnitude as found by ~er~h.' This is a large value. The effect of cathodically charging zone-refined iron with hydrogen and the resultant yield stress-grain size relationship has been investigated by tensile testing at -31°C. The resulting Petch plots (using a least-squares analysis) reveal a significant reduction in the slope and an increase in the intercept for specimens cathodically charged with hydrogen, regardless of whether the hydrogen is present during testing or is removed by evacuation. Other than surface blistering, the major effect of cathodically charging this material is to create occasional grain boundary cracks and thus presumably a large number of free dislocations at grain boundaries. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the slope of the Petch plot is related to the stress required to activate dislocation sources at or near pain boundaries. While there is no significant effect of the presence of hydrogen on the lower yield stress of this material, the ductility is considerably reduced. After hydrogen removal by evacuation, the ductility recovers substantially and almost complete recovery of ductility is experienced by the smaller grain size specimens. THE influence of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of ferritic materials has received much attention throughout the history of the metallurgy profession. This interest has stemmed from the obvious importance of preventing the catastrophic failure of parts in service, and from the desire to determine what mechanism is responsible for the observed behavior. The various mechanisms proposed for hydrogen em-brittlement have been discussed in detail by Tetel-man,'who concludes that a combination of the applied stress and hydrogen pressure within voids best accounts for the many experimental observations reported. From a quite reasonable correlation of the strain aging and delayed-failure behavior of a variety of materials,2-7 Troiano and coworkers are of the opinion that the delayed-failure mechanism (slow strain rate embrittlement as well) is better explained as a lattice effect; solute elements diffuse to regions of high triaxial stress, form uncondensed atmospheres there, and effect a reduction in the cohesive strength of the lattice. Since hydrogen yield points8,9 have been observed in ferritic materials, and since the hydrogen embrittlement process may be related to strain aging, one further contribution to embrittlement could be hydrogen-dislocation interactions which make crack blunting by plastic deformation a more difficult process. The etch" relationship offers a means of comparing the relative ease of initiating and propagating plastic deformation in metals and alloys. In the present study, this relationship was used to compare the behavior of zone-refined iron in three conditions: uncharged, cathodically charged with hydrogen, and cathodically charged with hydrogen and evacuated. These Petch plots and the observed ductility parameters allowed a separation of the effects of the very presence of hydrogen and the act of cathodically charging hydrogen into this material. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE An ingot of zone-refined iron was obtained from Battelle Memorial Institute which contained the following (typical) interstitial impurities in ppm: carbon, 10 * 5; nitrogen, 1; oxygen, 22; hydrogen, 0.9. The ingot was cold-reduced to a 1/2-in.-sq cross section, recrystallized 1 hr at 575°C, and then straight-rolled to a thickness of about 0.105 in. Sedimentary deposits such as sandstone are formed by the aggregation of cemented sand grains. Phosphates and laterite present similar aggregation of mineral grains. Grains and cement have different mineralogy and chemical characteristics. During size reduction through crushing or coarse grinding, the rocks are crumbled. Mineral grains and cement are then liberated, and the produced size distribution reflects their ?natural size distribution?. Mathematical modelling of these concomitant effects of crumbling and mineral liberation necessitates a specific material description and the adaptation of the commonly used theories of breakage kinetics and population balance. The coarse particles are mainly agglomerates made of mineral grains and cement particles whereas the fine particles are grains and cement with a natural grain size distribution. The population balance between the different particle size and particle types during size reduction takes into account the breakage rate and the progeny size distribution. The breakage rate can be described by a simple probability function or by a first order kinetics whereas the progeny size distribution is described by a breakage matrix. The model proposed here considers that the agglomerates will produce other agglomerated particles, liberated grains and cement particles; the two latter having their natural size distribution. The liberated grains and cement particles are subject to size reduction and follow the most commonly used theory of breakage. The present paper describes the theoretical approach of the concomitant crumbling and liberation effects. The application to a mathematical model for the cone crusher is presented. The importance of the heavy mineral sands to southern African economic well-being cannot be over emphasized. The value of the worldwide titanium dioxide industry is estimated at $7 billion. Six out of eight of the world?s proposed new project areas are in southern and eastern Africa, and a seventh at Tamil Nadu in India is partly owned by a South African company, Kumba Resources. The HMS industry can be highly lucrative; its return on capital is the best in the mining industry. There are, however, problems, particularly in the smelting technology. The often considerable affect of mining on environmentally sensitive coastal dunes is also becoming increasingly important. The medium-to long-term demand for Ti-dioxide pigment and ceramic grade zircon appears very healthy. If, as predicted, the costs of producing titanium metal can be reduced, then there is huge potential for the metal. In summary, the HMS industry is an attractive one to be in, with good returns and generally manageable risks. New business opportunities and their economic implications for Africa are discussed.

Mineral sands represent an important new resource being developed in the Murray Basin, including parts of western Victoria. This paper will outline a simple methodology for mineral sands characterisation, developed as part of the AMIRA-managed project P777 æThe Development of Heavy Suspension Techniques for High Density Separations (Replacement of ClericiÆs Solution)Æ. This project is currently sponsored by three multinational mining companies (De Beers Consolidated Mines, Iluka Resources Limited and Rio Tinto Limited) and is developing an innovative laboratory mineral characterisation procedure that will allow the replacement of the currently employed highly-toxic chemicals.Mineral sand resources almost always contain more than one valuable (and relatively heavy) mineral. Titanium minerals are found with a large range of titanium contents, giving rise to density variation and often subjective mineralogical descriptions. Companies tend to rely on laboratory heavy liquid separation in the evaluation of samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes. Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of high density (æheavyÆ) liquids and these tend to be more toxic as their density increases. Low-toxicity inorganic solutions, based on tungsten compounds, have been developed that can be utilised at relative densities (RD) up to 3.0. However, beyond this value currently only organic liquids can be used. Diiodomethane (methylene iodide) having a relative density of 3.31 is commonly used; however, this presents significant health and safety hazards. Mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate were found in the early 1900s by Clerici to provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0, hence æClericiÆs solutionÆ. For the characterisation of the heavy components of mineral sand deposits (eg anatase sg 3.9, rutile sg 4.2, ilmenite sg 4.4 û 4.7 and zircon sg 4.6 û 4.8) there is currently no heavy liquid alternative to ClericiÆs solution. ClericiÆs solution is highly toxic and testing is now conducted by very few laboratories worldwide with costs reflecting the chemical costs (though extensive efforts are made to recover and reuse the liquid, plus the requirement of its removal from the mineral samples), the infrastructure costs and health and safety regimes (eg blood testing of exposed staff, inventory management). A simple laboratory technique of density fractionation is being developed, employing suspensions of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstate (LST) solutions, that can replace ClericiÆs solution in the evaluation of fine mineral sands samples (eg -250+150 microns). The developing methodology that can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separations at relative densities above 5.0 will be outlined and the comparison of results with ClericiÆs solution presented.

ChEap power is essential to large-scale mining and metallurgical operations, particularly where fine grinding of large tonnages has to be resorted to, as is the case with an increasing number of mines treating disseminated copper ores, or low-grade gold ores, in the grinding of which considerable power is consumed. A comparison of the cost of generating power with Diesel engines and steam turbines and a brief discussion of the different factors governing the profitable use of either type of prime mover may be timely in view of the importance of a cheap supply of power to the mining industry, and the prominence that has lately been given to Diesel engines in America. As many of our most important mines and largest producers of metals are located in sections where neither cheap coal nor water power is available, and the price of oil fuel is increased by long hauls, the Diesel engine will become a prime mover of increasing importance. This applies particularly to the Southwestern States, where an ample supply of cold water for condensing purposes is unusual and local climatological conditions interfere in securing the high vacua essential to high turbine efficiency. About 12 times as much water will be required for condensing purposes with steam turbines under general conditions as is needed for jacket-cooling of two-stroke cycle Diesel engines; four-stroke cycle Diesel engines require only one-twentieth of the cooling water. Another condition favoring the use of Diesel engines is the high load factor at which most mine power plants operate. The influence of load factor on the cost of generating power is shown in Tables 1. and 2 and in Fig. 1. The higher the cost of fuel and the load factor, the greater will be the proportion of the fuel to the other costs making up the total cost of generating power. Capital charges (interest and redemption), maintenance, operating labor, and lubrication are practically constant amounts regardless of the load-output of the station; the fuel consumption and its cost are practically the only variables with the load. The costs here given are based on conditions as generally found in the Southwestern States, and on Diesel engine operating experience in European countries, where this type of prime mover has reached a high state of perfection, units upward of 4,000 hp. having proved entirely successful in operation.

"The tunnel sector is excavated into a rock mass heavily affected by tectonics, defined as a regional fault. The rock around the tunnel support undertakes the non – elastic deformation and gradually detaches from the rest of the non affected rock mass, moving inside of the excavated area and tending to fill up the whole space. The initial solution of using stiff support consisting in double steel ribs I12 with circular shape in the upper part and straight vertical pillars in the lower part has proved to be inadequate. Based on the calculations of the subsidence phenomena and a mathematical model, the proposed alternative support was provided by special circular steel ribs – SG-23 –that allows a limited rib deformation (by relative slip between the arch segments) in order to mobilize the contact between the rock contour and the inner face of the rib - not only for the deformed rib but also for the neighboring ribs. 1. Hydropower parameters).The Livezeni intake reservoir is provided by a gated dam located 1250 m downstream of merging point between Jiul de Vest river and Jiul de Est river. The dam is equipped with three radial gates with flap gates with a span of 12 m each and the height of (6 + 3) m. As part of a program to investigate technology for the extraction of studied HNO3 alumina from abundant domestic ores , the Bureau of Mines leaching of calcined Georgia kaolinitic clay . In this investigation , iron impurities were removed from the aluminum nitrate pregnant leach liquor by solvent extraction , and the purified liquor was evaporated to prepare a suitably concentrated crystallizer feed liquor . Aluminum nitrate nonahydrate was crystallized from the liquor to separate the aluminum from undesirable trace elements and excess water . Continuous crystallization at 40 ° C in a pilot plant vacuum evaporative unit was performed for 5 days to observe the effects of impurity buildup under minimum bleed- stream conditions . Liquor feed rate was 26 lb/h and AAll (( NNOO33 )) 33..99HH22O0 ((AANNNN)) crystal production rate was 17 lb/h . Fe 203 and Cr203 were not effectively separated from the crystals , and P205 , MgO , and K20 impurities must be removed by recrystallization . Other impurities did not excessively contaminate the crystals . Washing the crystals with water or aqueous HNO3 gave an equivalent increase in crystal purity levels by displacing mother liquor . Theoretical equations , applicable to any continuous evaporative crystallization of developed to produce material balances for engineering ANN , were applications .
