"Current interest in the distribution of mercury in the natural environment comes from quite different, though not unrelated, sources. Mercury has long been an important metal in many industries and has, therefore, been much sought after by mining interests. The presence of mercury traces in the various media of the natural environment, namely soil, rock, air, water and vegetation, is exploited by geochemists not only to find mercury and polymetallic ore deposits, but also to find most other types of economic metal mineralization. More recently, however, mercury has caught the attention of health authorities and environmental scientists who are becoming increasingly concerned over the hazards of mercury wastes and the danger these present to the environment and to man. It is now apparent that the trace quantities of mercury, considered so important and helpful to exploration geologists, can be concentrated in the biosphere to such levels as to present considerable problems for ecologists. This article summarizes most of the available data on mercury contents in materials of geological interest and presents average normal values for rocks, ores, minerals, soils, sediments, waters and plants. The geoch.emical cycle for mercury in nature is presented and the mechanisms of mercury migration around the cycle are discussed."

This report presents a discussion of the spectra of 39 condensed thiophenes in which the structure includes at least 1 benzene ring. The vibrational bands present in three regions of the infrared spectra of these thiophenes were interpreted by comparing the similarities of the spectra of condensed thiophenes with the spectra of substituted benzenes. In the overtone-combination region 23 of the 39 condensed thiophenes had spectra which contained sufficient detail to be usable for correlating this region of the spectrum with the appropriate benzene spectrum. In the in-plane deformation region it was possible to make correlations for the vibrations of 18 of the 39 condensed thiophenes whose infrared spectra were studied. In the out-of-plane deformation region the C-H out-of-plane vibrations for hydrogen on benzene rings in the condensed thiophenes can be correlated using known data from substituted benzenes.

Washington State has a variety of industrial minerals and although not many are produced currently (1982) most have a history of production (table 1). The value of industrial minerals produced in the state exceeds by several times the production value of metallic minerals. In 1981, 15 minerals - cement, limestone, clay, gemstone, pumice, sand and gravel, stone, diatomite, gypsum, olivine, peat, talc, garnet, silica, and dolomite - were produced. Combined value of nonmetallic production for 1981 is estimated at $218,999,000. Cement had the largest estimated value at $102 million, followed by sand and gravel at $47 million, and crushed stone at $29 million. These figures are from the US. The traditional approach to mineral resource development is to identify the resource and then to undertake an environmental impact assessment of the effects of developing the resource. However, the traditional approach tends to ignore or underestimate cumulative, indirect and synergistic effects (Therivel et al., 1992). Moreover, traditional environmental impact assessment puts the project proponent in a position where the environmental impact assessment is used to defend on environmental grounds, a decision which has already been taken on technical and economic grounds. An alternative approach is to undertake an area-wide or strategic environmental assessment, (United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, 1981; Kelly et al., 1987). Strategic environmental assessment consists of the compilation and analysis of environmental data and information on an area. The data and information includes physical and chemical oceanographic data, biological surveys, social and economic parameters such as recreation and resource use, and ecosystem stressors such as dumping areas and sewage outfalls. Strategic environmental assessment is being increasingly used in the U.S. to provide scientific information to evaluate national or regional objectives for development and conservation of coastal and oceanic resources (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 1991). The strategic environmental assessment process lends itself very well to an evaluation of offshore sand and gravel re- sources in Atlantic Canada, because although the potential resource is widespread, the environmental constraints on development are potentially serious, but highly variable. The approach has the merits of identifying areas which are least susceptible to environmental damage, and of concentrating the exploration efforts on that part of the resource which is most viable from the perspective of integrated resource management and marine conservation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted underground tests and computer analyses to study coal mine roof behavior. Southern Ohio Coal Company provided test sites it) their Heigs mines located near Athens, Ohio. Testing apparatus was adapted for monitoring roof behavior at the face of mining from a remote surface location. Finite element analyses were applied to study the structural conditions present. Test sites were located at three different intersections of entries and crosscuts of the room-and-pillar mine. Electrical read-out instruments were used to record roof bolt loads, roof sag, and roof-floor convergence. They were installed during the roof bolting cycle of a conventional mining section and data was recorded for several months. Normal mining operations continued throughout the test period with minimal interruptions due to the installation and monitoring of the instruments. A computerized data acquisition system, partly underground, partly on surface, permitted continuous monitoring of data and its retrieval, display, manipulation, and storage. The finite element code used to model the test sites accounted for three-dimensional geometry, nonlinear material behavior, and the mining excavation and bolt installation sequences. Results of the test are highly variable. Comparable values between test and analysis results were obtained by applying statistical averaging of. roof test data. Results of the analyses indicate that bolts have a lesser effect on the gross behavior of mine roofs than has been indicated and that bolt load changes are strongly influenced by mining excavation sequence, bolt-placement sequence, and face distance

In this study, the effects of heat treatment on phase formation and surface morphology of the Cr-Pt coated system are investigated using X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy techniques. The CrPt andCr4Pt (Cr3Pt - A15 type) phases were formed after heat treatment of the coated samples. Heat treating at 1000°C renders a distinct island coating morphology that is non-continuous in nature. A diffusional model is proposed for this coated system with regards to the surface morphology formation after heat treatment.

This report describes the operation and maintenance of the Mobile Inert Gas Generator for use in the Remote Sealing System for fighting underground coal mine fires. Seals are emplaced in mine passageways between the fire zone and the rest of the mine isolating the fire zone from the mine. The seals consist of fly ash that has been pneumatically conveyed via inert gas through a borehole connecting the surface and the passageway, Inert gas is used as the fly ash seal transport medium (instead of fresh air) since the introduction of large volumes of fresh air in the vicinity of the fire zone would be undesirable. The inert gas generation equipment is mounted on two flatbed trailers, the "hot" trailer and the "cold" trailer. The hot trailer contains the combustion and cooling equipment. The cold trailer contains the moisture removal and compression equipment necessary to convey the fly ash. The system is self-sufficient and requires only fuel and fly ash deliveries. The Inert Gas Generator has been thoroughly performance tested and has been operated in the field for approximately 200 hr. The system was employed in the demonstration of the entire Remote Mine Sealing System at the Jenney Mine in the Fall of 1978. The system is currently available for fighting any future underground coal mine fires.

The importance of understanding the phenomena associated with rock fracture has long been fully appreciated in rock mechanics. This is clearly apparent from the special attention paid to rock fracture in the comprehensive papers published within the past four years. These papers present a picture of how the knowledge of brittle fracture of rock was gradually enriched and also show that what was often taken for granted three or four years ago is no longer considered as valid today.

Exploration budgets are commonly determined by "rules of thumb" such as a percentage of earnings or other fiscal measure. An appropriate exploration budget is the amount needed to achieve the goals of the company. It can be determined by discounting the income expected from achieved goals. Budgets for individual projects are determined in a similar manner except that risk of failure is included in the computation.

His family on the paternal side settled on land in Western Australia in the middle of the last century. His family on the maternal side were part of the W.A. goldfields scenc, including places such as Kanowna, and the Great Fingal mine, near Cue, where his grandfather lies buried.The combination of land and mining environments may perhaps have contributed to an innate interest in geology shared by Tim and his two brothers, all of whom became geologists.Tim showed an early liking for mathematical and geometric subjects, and in his B.Sc. studies at the University of Western Australia he took a major in mathematics along with geology in 1940.His first job was on the Kalgoorlie Golden Mile, and then at Norseman. After serving as a flying boat navigator in the north and south Pacific theatres in World War II he returned to Kalgoorlie and thence to Broken Hill.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a discussion of the statistical approach to the design of experiments and indicates, by concrete examples, how and when statistical design is essential for obtaining meaningful data with a minimum number of experiments. Every research worker plans his work and designs his experiments in a manner which, based on his experience, seems most rational to him and which he believes will produce the information essential for resolving the problems. If the results obtained are open to multiple interpretations and are not of definitive reliability, the failure of the experiment design to produce the desired information may be due to several causes, These include faulty judgment in selecting the factors to be tested, ignoring the importance of interaction between factors, failure to adequately control test variables, and assuming that meaningful trends in the results can be identified without comparison to a predetermined experimental error. An experienced researcher probably will deduce from the nature of the data obtained that the design is faulty and may by trial and error ultimately arrive at the correct solution to the problem. Statistical methods of planning research minimize the chance of faulty experiment design, embody concrete procedures for testing the validity and reliability of the test data and for indicating mandatory changes in the design, and enable the researcher to obtain meaningful information with the least number of tests.

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations. New Mexico leads U.S. domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica and decorative stone. New Mexico also has the potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REEs), niobium and zircon, and other REE deposits are being explored. REE-thoriumuranium veins have been found in the Gallinas, Capitan and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Exploration for beryllium has occurred in the Ojo Caliente No. 2, Cuchillo Negro and Victorio mining districts. Companies also are examining high-calcium limestone and high-magnesium dolomite for potential development, while aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. IntroductionIndustrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life. They are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics to refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate nearly every aspect of daily life, their presence and their roles are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the nonmetallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a byproduct of cleaning natural gas, one of the world’s major energy fuels.Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 41 percent of the more than $3.1 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2014 (Table 1). Low-density cellular concrete (LDCC) was first introduced to the market in the early 1900s and since then has made continuous technological advances. There are two primary types of LDCC: permeable and non-permeable. Both types of cellular concrete offer advantages in different types of geotechnical engineering applications. Because of its unique characteristics of low density, high compressive strength, and high fluidity during placement, LDCC offers an effective solution for a wide variety of engineering applications, and in many cases provides a more cost-effective, labor saving alternative to traditional fill materials. This paper will review the history, characteristics, and technological advances of LDCC, highlighting multiple real-world case studies that showcase the high-performance capabilities of both permeable and non-permeable LDCC.

"Recent interest in the pipeline transport of solid mate-als has been sparked by the idea that, in an inflationary onomy, pipeline costs are more stable than the costs of any other transport systems. Pipelines have proved over 1e years to be dependable, records indicate that main-•nance and operating costs are comparatively low, and 1eir amenability to automation is of considerable im->rtance.The concept of hydraulic hoisting of solids from under-round, or cross-country hydraulic transportation of con-~ntrates and ores, is currently of prime interest to the ining industry. In general, this paper deals with a preliminary investi-ation of energy losses incurred while transporting a rela-vely heavy, crushed mine product, namely magnetite, oth vertically and horizontally. The basis and validity of everal equations derived by other experimenters to com-ute these losses is discussed. A theoretical analysis of ydraulic hoi:,,ting is made, and, based upon test results, calculation of horsepower requirements for hoisting an re under a given set of conditions is presented. Results indicate that:n vertical transport, the friction head losses are identical to those of clear water, and the total energy requirement for hydraulic hoisting then becomes a function of height of lift, concentration and specific gravity of the solids being hoisted. .-In horizontal transport, friction head losses can be calculated with reasonable accuracy using Bonning-ton's correlation curve. Losses computed utilizing Durand's correlation (K = 85) result in estimates which are too low by 10 to 30 per cent, an<l those calculated using Newitt's correlation (K = 1,100, K = 66) give friction loss values which are too high by 10 to 30 per cent . . -The theoretical horsepower (RMS-hp.) required for hoisting hydraulically is approximately half of that required for conventional double-drum skip hoisting."

The conventional low temperature process for extracting' helium from natural gas involves liquefying the whole gas stream in order to remove the relatively small fraction of helium. A process based on the selective diffusion of helium through a semi-permeable barrier is, in principle, more economical and flexible, particularly for the treatment of small re-serves and low concentrations. The well-known permeability of glass to helium offers the possibility of such a diffusion process and McAfee of the Bell telephone Laboratories showed in 1958 that practical separations could be achieved by passing natural gas over bundles of fine capillary glass tubing. Developmental studies have been carried out involving larger units and more extended field tests than those of McAfee. Fine capillary tubing of Pyrex glass 0.0035 in. diameter was prepared by drawing ordinary 6 mm. laboratory tubing in a furnace. A research program to aid development of better petroleum-recovery technology is in progress at the Appalachian Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, Morgantown, W. Va. The work is part of the overall effort of the Federal Bureau of Mines to effect true conservation of the Nation&apos;s natural resources. Knowledge of the magnitude of the interstitial water content of oil-bearing formations is important to petroleum-reservoir engineers because of the influence of water on fluid flow during oil production and because of the significance of water volume in oil-reserve evaluation. Such information on Appalachian oil-bearing formations is needed to aid in planning secondary oil-recovery projects. Generally, the interstitial water content of oil sands can be estimated by one or more of the following methods: Analysis of cores obtained with oil-base drilling fluid, electric logging, restored-state or capillary-pressure tests, centrifuge tests, evaporation tests, or mercury-injection tests.

The Bailey mining complex is located in Greene County, PA in the valley of Talley Run, a small stream tributary to the Enlow Fork of Wheeling Creek as shown on the location map insert found on Figure 1. The Bailey complex includes two Pittsburgh No. 8 Seam deep mines (Bailey and Bailey #2), a coal preparation plant, and two refuse areas (for disposal of coarse and fine processing waste). Clean coal is shipped from the complex via a 24.15 km (15 mile) rail spur, which connects to the Monongahela Railroad in Waynesburg, PA. In early 1981, Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) began a permitting effort aimed at beginning construction of Bailey, the largest underground coal mining complex to be built to date in the United States. Construction of the Bailey Mine began in December, 1981, less than six (6) months following the first application submittal. Clean coal was produced by the Bailey Preparation Plant in September, 1984. Effective project planning, including early formulation of a project planning team, identification of "red flag" issues, innovative responses to environmental questions and development of environmentally sound project designs, all contributed to the relatively quick permitting at Bailey.

GENERALLY speaking, the Industry lost ground in 1941 in its accident experience. Though the frequency of compensation accidents was but slightly higher than in the previous year and well below past experience, our fatality rate shot up to that obtaining in 1938, and the average cost per man employed was the highest for some time. The number of fatalities was 56 in 1941 as against 33 in 1940. The average cost of compensation per man employed was $34.25 in 1941 as against $28.43. There was but a slight increase in the number of men employed. Accident prevention efforts were maintained, as shown by our frequency, but our accidents were of a more serious nature. In a period of considerable labour turnover, with many new men entering the Industry, especially the base-metal division, and much mental distraction, we might well have expected a high rate of accidents. That this did not occur is a tribute to managers, supervisors, and workmen alike. We all regret the high fatality rate and one must consider why this occurred. So far as it is possible to determine, there is no apparent explanation. There were no disasters. The accidents occurred to the same class of work-men, both in respect to jobs and age groups, and from the same age-old causes that we all know so well. Luck is a big factor in the seriousness of an accident; the solution lies in preventing accidents, even first-aid cases. Generally speaking, if minor accidents do not occur, major accidents do not occur.
