Aluminum phosphide was synthesized and grown in solution of excess aluminum using a modified two-temperature technique. An inversion in the density difference between ALP and molten aluminum takes place at about 1100°. Dispersed nuclei can act as sources for further crystal growth in a manner resembling ripening. Advantage was taken of this phenomenon by introducing a stirring motion into the molten liquid. This was done with a split-phase 10-kH2 rotating magnetic field produced by four horizontal coils placed symmetrically about the furnace at the level of the molten metal. The method also prevents the formation of a surface film which would impede the reaction. By this technique vastly improved yields were obtained and flat crystals 5 by 5 by 0.5 mm were grown at lower temperatures and at greater rates than heretofore. THE family of III-V intermetallic compounds has received much attention since the prediction of their semiconducting properties in the early 1950s. Of the family, A1P has perhaps the highest band gap of those compounds normally possessing the zinc-blende structure. But it has been least studied because it is difficult to handle and grow. The handling difficulties have been dealt with elsewhere and it is sufficient to say here that, by various techniques, many of the difficulties can be overcome.' The difficulties encountered in crystal growth can be related to the refractory nature of A1P and in turn to its high band gap. Because of the anticipated high melting point of the material and the accompanying high phosphorus vapor pressure, the reported work on synthesis and growth was done by epitaxial synthesis-growth via chlorine2 and iodine3 transport and from solution of excess aluminum by the two-temperature technique.4'5 The transport-grown crystals take on the dimensions of the substrate but do not grow easily in thickness. In the usual two-temperature technique as applied on the synthesis of Alp, the temperature of the molten aluminum is kept at 1000° to 1250°C while the phosphorus is maintained at 1 to 20 atm. A thin film of aluminum phosphide and oxide form immediately, impeding the reaction and affecting the yield. Attempts to grow the Alp from such solutions by the methods used to grow Gap and InP from excess gallium and indium have not been successful. EFFICIENT handling of large tonnages in open-pit mining demands, primarily, an abundance of well fragmented rock. To accomplish this, a drilling and blasting department composed of a well-knit, versatile group of workers and supervisors must be established. Some costs will remain relatively on the same level over a period of years, while others can be greatly lowered as will be shown. The Utah Copper Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., Bingham Canyon, Utah, has been ever alert for improvements in operating methods and equipment to gain increased efficiency and lower costs. BINGHAM CANYON MINE The greatest dimension of the mine is 8000 ft northeast-southwest with a width of 5000 ft southeast-northwest. From the lowest level, at an elevation of 6040 ft above sea-level, the mountain rises in 27 benches on the west side to W level (elevation 7800 ft) and 21 benches on the east side to Q level (elevation 7460 ft). At the inception of open-pit mining in 1906, the overcapping of leached porphyry had to be removed to reach a commercial grade of sulphide ore. The overcapping or waste now remaining is quartzite with intercalated limestone beds. The limestones are usually soft in nature except in the south-middle portion of the mine where they have been metamorphized along the contact zone. This area usually gives drilling and blasting operations a great deal of trouble. Here occurs the greatest amount of secondary blasting, as the well-established fracture planes cause the altered beds to break into large boulders. Several massive quartzite "ribs" occur in the overburden, and as a result, the uniform breakage is difficult to obtain. The major quartzite areas have been subjected to complex folding, fracturing and faulting because of the intrusion of the underlying stock. The monzonite porphyry, which carries the commercial values, presents no serious drilling problem because of its softness and extensive minute fracturing throughout the mass. A series of major slips or faults pass through the ore body which, although of considerable advantage to the drilling and blasting department, sometimes works to the disadvantage of the track department. Drilling and blasting of the porphyry apparently becomes easier as depth is attained, but highly siliceous streaks throughout the pit still present difficulties. At no place is the rock of such character as to allow excavation without preparations. On certain higher elevations or levels, old fill material can be dug by the shovels, but only at some risk to equipment because of bank slippage. Results of the application of geo1ogic knowledge to grade control have been remarkable. Grade reduction from dilution has been diminished from greater than 9% at the time of the program's beginning to about 2% at present. This has resulted in an increase of about 1.8 lb of copper per ton of ore mined and has made a substantial contribution to earnings at White Pine during the past two years. Even more improvement is expected in the future. The White Pine orebody, situated in the southwestern portion of the Keweenaw peninsula of upper Michigan, is a gently dipping stratiform or bedded deposit. Copper distribution is stratigraphi-cally controlled with higher values being confined to specific beds in the ore column. Room-and-pillar mining is practiced. Mining technique and geologic characteristics present a special array of problems in controlling the grade of ore. A routine program of grade control was started in the White Pine mine in August 1961. The program is based upon development and application of geologic knowledge to assist mine operating personnel to increase the grade of ore, primarily by accurate stratigraphic control and selection of areas for development on the basis of grade distribution trends. Geologists work closely with mine supervisors to offer the necessary geologic guidance. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION OF COPPER The important rock series in the White Pine area is comprised of three formations of late Precambrian age. In descending order they are the Freda sandstone, Nonesuch shale, and Copper Harbor conglomerate. The Nonesuch shale is about 600 ft thick. Economic copper concentration occurs only in the lowermost 20 to 25 ft of the formation; however, within a restricted area along the southwest side of the mine the uppermost 1 to 7 ft of the Copper Harbor conglomerate (lower sandstone) contain sufficient quantities of copper to be included in the ore column. The ore consists primarily of chalcocite with subordinate native copper disseminated in shales, siltstones, and sandstones. MINE BOUNDARIES AND STRUCTURE The mine area is bounded on the west by the sub-outcrop of basal Nonesuch at bed rock surface and on the southwest by the White Pine fault (Fig. 1). The south and southeast limit of the orebody is reasonably well delineated by thinning or pinch-out of favorable host beds. Northern, northeastern, and eastern limits have not been established. The White Pine fault is actually a wide zone of shearing which strikes approximately N 40° W. It is downthrown on the southwest side and dips steeply to the northeast. Maximum vertical displacement is about 1500 ft.

The study of flotation kinetics was first reported by Garcia-Zuniga1 in 1935. Since then, literature on the subject has grown with the time. 2-19 Although there is an abundance of flotation kinet¬ics models available in the literature to describe flo¬tation systems, they are mostly of academic interest and are seldom applicable for use in the industrial environment. Several reasons contribute to the wide gap in the industrial -application of the academic models. These include: 1) the lack of generality in the model, e.g., the model is limited to certain size ranges; 14 2) the academic models involve complicated mathematics; 5,6,10,11 3) confusion about the order of the flo¬tation rate, e.g., several authors proposed a first order rate model, 1,15,16 whereas the others propagated a second order rate model: 2,17,18,194) the use of an unrealistic rigid value, such as the use of a maximum recovery of 100%, 5,8,19 which is unrealistic in industrial operations; and 5) the use of graphs that confuse the reader rather than interpret information. 2,3,10 This paper intends to introduce a simple and easy to understand empirical flotation kinetics model along with a way of presenting the model in an informative graphical form, which should stimulate the interest of other practical engineers to become concerned with practical application within the mineral industry.

"A typical Chilean producer in the Large Copper Mining Industry today is characterized by high production level with economical results decreasing but still attractive. Operational activities are developed within a low-productivity environment, with high cost and complex relationship between the company and communities, government authorities, providers, clients and their own workers. Decreasing copper grades and limited availability of energy, water and workforce are structural problems which require the State intervention in collaboration with the relevant actors and benefits would be evident in the middle or long term. Main opportunities in the short term are found in the sub optimal conditions we have at many plants today. Robust solutions to control existing operational management system as well as to supply systematic optimization options are needed. These should be oriented toward effective fulfillment of specific operational set points and also to reduce variability in crosscutting tasks. Solutions should include easy connectivity to existing information systems as well as to a suite of simulation and optimization tools settled in a highly interactive communication platform. Relevant issues include minimization of specific energy and fresh water consumption, maximization of the use and performance of critical equipments, minimization of damage to environment and control of effective application of good operational practices. Several specific examples are given."

"A non-local formulation of the classical continuum mechanics theory called peridynamics is used to study driven dynamic fractures in the near wellbore region. The controlled application of pressure on the inner walls of the borehole can create multiple fractures that initiate from the borehole and propagate radially outwards. The number of fractures and their final length is primarily controlled by the loading conditions and the in-situ stress state. It is the objective of this study to use a novel numerical technique called peridynamics to investigate: 1) the influence of loading conditions on the fracture pattern, and 2) the effect of in-situ stress anisotropy on fracture propagation. In peridynamics, the momentum equation from the classical theory of solid mechanics is replaced with the integro-differential momentum equation of peridynamics. As a result, discontinuities in the body, such as fractures, occur spontaneously. The material is represented by a continuum body with material points that interact non-locally with all other points within a specified distance. Fractures evolve using a damage evolution law, wherein, damage at any point is represented as the ratio of the number of broken bonds in the current configuration to the total number of bonds in the undeformed configuration.Simulations are performed on simplified test cases and the results are compared to relevant experimental and numerical studies found in the literature. It is shown that the loading rate significantly influences the number of fractures initiated from the borehole as well as their extent. Low loading rate produces fewer fractures, whereas, high loading rates produce longer and a greater number of fractures from the borehole. The numerical method successfully predicts the fracture pattern obtained from a wide range of loading conditions. Predictions also indicate that the resultant fractures are shorter when in-situ stress is applied. Numerical results show that the fracture extension is largest in the direction perpendicular to the minimum compressive stress for the range of loading rates used in this study."

Topaz is a fluorine-bearing aluminosilicate mineral of the kyanite-sillimanite group. The formula has been given as Al2SiO4(F,OH)2, [Al(F, OH)]2SiO4, or 2Al2O3?2Al(F, OH)3SiO2. Topaz is generally considered a semiprecious-to-precious gem mineral, but it is a fairly common minor constituent of granites. In 1937 the U.s. Geological Survey reported an occurrence of massive topaz in the 3 Brewer gold mine, Chesterfield County, S.C. Over the next 8 years considerable research was done on topaz to establish its properties and to determine possible end uses The first reported shipment of ore was in 1939 Peak production was reached in 194412, and output then began declining until the mine closed in 194913? During World War II topaz was used in refractories, as a flux in steel mills, and in the manufacture of borosilicate glass 14. The main advantage of using topaz over kyanite and sillimanite in refractory use was that calcined topaz converted to over 95 percent mullite (3A1203 .2Si02) while calcined kyanite or sillimanite contained only 88 percent mullite15. However, a major draw-back to utilization of topaz is the evolution of fluorides during calcination. In 1973 the Geological Survey reported that topaz occurred in probable commercial quantities in at least two domestic locationsl6: the Brewer area of South Carolina and a location in Colorado. The literature also indicated that progress had been made in controlling fluorine-bearing fumes. This research has progressed to the state where valuable fluorine compounds are being recovered on a commercial scale 17. Thus, a major obstacle to utilization of topaz appears to have been resolved. The Bureau of Mines under its program of advancing minerals technology initiated a project to study techniques for the concentration of topaz from disseminated materials. The objective of the study was to determine those techniques that would be used to produce topaz concentrates that could be utilized as a source of fluorine and mullite.

Slurry rheology affects autogenous grinding performance by changing the rock's breakage characteristics. In this study pilot scale batch autogenous grinding was carried out to observe the effect of viscosity on the breakage characteristics of the rocks (the media), and on the overall specific energy consumption. Clay/fines content, and temperature of the initial charge, were varied to alter the viscosity of the slurry. Results showed that at higher slurry viscosity, rocks became more difficult to break, resulting in an overall increase in the specific energy consumption of the mill. Also, it was observed that viscosity had a significant effect on the amount of critical size material present in the grinding circuit, where the critical size material is the material which is too large to be effectively ground in the mill, and too fine to act as grinding media.

A series of flotation experiments was carried out to study the interaction between the parameters of pulp density (mass per cent of solids in feed slurry) and frother addition (on the basis of solid mass feed rate). It was found that certain combinations of pulp density and frother additions caused large losses in yield. The interactive effect of these parameters can be primarily attributed to the total amount of frother added per unit of water. Consequently it is suggested that frother additions be made on the basis of water flow rate. As frother addition increased, in terms of the amount of frother per unit of water, yield increased rapidly but above an addition rate of about 10 g/tone it reached a plateau. Such results correlated well with qualitative visual observations of changes in bubble size and dispersion, with increasing levels of frother addition.

Discussion of the paper of LAWRENCE ADDICKS, presented at the Salt Lake meet-ing, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 91, July, 1914, pp. 1671 to 1674. JAMES H. PAYNE, Baltimore, Md. (communication to the Secretary*). -Mr. Addicks's account of the behavior of the nodulizer at Chrome on blast-furnace flue dust leads me to outline what has been done so far upon the application .of the same apparatus to fine sulphide concentrates. As Mr. Addicks states in his paper, the conditions prevailing in the test kiln at Yorktown in the demonstration I made for him upon Chrome material were strongly oxidizing; so much so that the sulphur was roasted down to less than 1 per cent. It is therefore to be expected that the first test made upon sulphide ore a short time after this, in which Ducktown green ore fines were used, did not show very promising results. Although the Ducktown ore contained only 13.52 per cent. of sulphur its gangue was quite fusible, and the intense heat generated by the oxidation of. the extremely fine sulphide particles slagged the mass, bringing about a condition approximating that of a Brückner roaster in distress. During the spring and summer of 1912, the writer kept working upon different schemes to cut clown this slagging. Two successful methods were finally worked 'out embodying opposite principles, one promoting oxidation of the finer particles and the other retarding. their oxidation. In the early part of the present year the writer succeeded in interesting the Braden Copper Co. in nodulizing, with the result that an extensive series of tests were made at Yorktown upon oil-floated concentrates covering quite a wide range in analysis. These tests led to trials in the Chrome rotary on the part of the U. S. Metals Refining Co. of Minerals Separation concentrates which they had in stock, and later to test runs to check up the Yorktown runs on Braden concentrates. The large-scale tests checked up with the Yorktown tests in every way (except fuel consumption, which was, however, correctly predicted), and led to the Braden company's decision to adopt the process at Braden. The fuel consumption upon oil-floated concentrates is not over 6 gal. per ton and in many cases is less. The action in the furnace is independent of the sulphur content, and there is actually less tendency to form nose rings in the Chrome rotary than upon flue dust. It is believed that the improvements entering into the design of the Braden kilns will cut down the nose-ring trouble to where it will no longer be a drawback to the process.

Body breakage usually involves breakage of particles by compression between two surfaces or impacted against a rigid surface, with the latter of interest in this current study. This mode of breakage has been identified to be the most elementary size reduction process and the most effective breakage process in comminution devices. It has been found in the literature that the progenies produced from this form of breakage possess a residual velocity at which they move, after the breakage event. In the pursuit of efficiently utilising applied comminution energy, a laboratory-scale breakage device has been developed to deliver precise specific impact breakage using the concept of a fast-moving hammer and a slow-moving particle to effect breakage. The residual velocities of the progenies from the breakage event may be used to generate secondary breakage without further addition of energy if the particle encounters a stiff obstacle such as a steel plate at right angles to its path. To measure the extent of secondary breakage, the steel wall of the device was lined with a rubber material to suppress the second set of breakage events. The performance of the new device is analysed, based on calculated t10 values and measured residual velocities of the moving daughter particles. Testing involving anvils showed a much finer PSD and higher t10 compared to the test involving rubber lining. This finding is corroborated by the measured residual velocities of the progenies. The resulting energies calculated from the measured residual velocities of the progeny were found to be approximately 42-88% of the primary specific impact energy. Chemical alteration of the compressive strength of sandstone has been investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM). Successful development of this technology would offer an attractive alternative to the methods now used for stress control in mines. Sandstone cores were stressed to failure under uniaxial compression at two different strain rates. Specimens saturated with either distilled or tap water showed an average 14% reduction in stress at failure compared with those dried in vacuum. Samples saturated with dilute solutions of aluminum chloride, hydrochloric acid, and polyethylene oxide showed no statistically significant difference in failure stress compared with those saturated with water. By contrast, compressive strength of the cores was increased some 7% by saturation with the nonpolar solvent carbon tetrachloride. No correlation was found between zeta potential and compressive strength.

Objective To reduce equipment operator exposure to respirable dust in enclosed cabs by examining the effectiveness of retrofitting air pressurization and filtration systems on existing cabs. Background Many types of heavy equipment are used in mining, construction, and agriculture. Most have enclosed cabs to protect the equipment operator from excessive dust and noise exposure. When the equipment is new, controls are normally implemented into the cab to keep these exposures at acceptable levels. However, as this equipment becomes older, many components of the enclosure deteriorate, such as gaskets and seals. This causes the effectiveness of the enclosed cab to be greatly reduced. Once this occurs, the equipment operator's dust exposure can increase to hazardous levels. In surface mining operations, elevated exposures to crystalline silica have caused an excessive incidence of silicosis. Approach A cooperative research study with a mining operation and a cab filtration company was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of retrofitting an older surface drill with two controls to lower the drill operator's respirable dust exposure. These two controls were: (1) A good air filtering and pressurization system to ensure that clean air was delivered into the enclosed cab. Ideally, the incoming air filter should be 99% efficient in removing particles with an aero- dynamic diameter of 0.3 pm or greater from the airflow. (2) Sufficiently sealing the cab to develop a positive static pres- sure and ensure that dust was not leaking into the cab. This was done by plugging all holes and cracks and maintaining good gaskets and seals. To prevent wind from forcing contaminated air through holes in the cab, the cab's static pressure must be greater than the wind's velocity pressure. During the course of this research, it was found that a floor heater fan used in the drill during the winter months greatly increased the operator’s Respirable dust exposure. Problem Identification Four days of background dust levels were measured as a baseline for this research. These baseline measurements were taken in May 2000 when air temperatures ranged from 60° to 70° F. When this was completed, the two controls were implemented. The first control was to install an improved air filtering and pressurization system on the enclosed cab. This was composed of a two-stage prefilter, a blower, then the respirator-medium secondary filter. Since the secondary filter was on the positive side of the fan, all air delivered into the enclosed cab had to pass through this secondary filter. After the filtering system was installed, the cab was pressurized to a static pressure of0.01 inches of water (w.g.), which is still very minimal. The second control was to seal the cab. New door gaskets were installed, and all cracks and holes in the shell of the enclosure were plugged. This increased the cab pressurization to approximately 0.1 inches w.g.

"Drying (water removal) prior to smelting is always economically feasible. Unnecessary heating of vapour can thus be eliminated resulting in savings of5-15 MUSD every year.Thermodynamically removal of one ton of water out of copper concentrate at 100 °C (with 10 % moisture) requires approximately 3150 MJ/tH2o, consisting of heating of the water (377 MJ), heating of the concentrate (509 MJ) and water evaporation (2260 MJ). This is quite independent of the selected drying technology. In reality some more heat is needed as higher temperature is practiced to enhance the drying performance and to reduce the equipment size.Major nominator in drying energy efficiency is amount of gases, which depends greatly on the drying technology. Dryers based on direct heating with fossil fuels have high gas flow rates, and thus they require additional energy of about 1400-1600 MJ/tH2o, compared to indirect modemsteam drying at 250-400 MJ/tH2o.Significant benefits in energy consumption (900-1300 MJ/tH2o) with additional potential for a bonus profit of 2-4 MUSD/y year, together with full elimination of some 40 000 tpy CO2 per mid-size dryer is available by selecting sustainable, energy efficient steam drying.IntroductionRemoval of water from the concentrate is very energy intensive thus having a significant environmental impact. However, drying prior to smelting is always economically feasible and very often viable also from the perspective of process operations. This environmental impact of drying can, however, be decreased or even fully eliminated with proper selection of the drying technology.Energy incorporated in drying consists always of a number of phases like liquid (water), solids (concentrate) and gases (water vapour, purging I dilution air, combustion gases). Each phase is heated to a specific temperature during the drying process.Heating of water, heating of the concentrate and water evaporation consumes more or less the same amount of energy despite of the drying technology (3150 MJ per ton of water). In conventional drying this amount of energy is achieved by combustion of fossil fuels wirg subsequent CO2 emission. Alternatively, chemical energy derived from sulphide smelting can be utilized in a form of steam thus generating zero emission ofCO2, in modem steam drying."

"The selection of a site for plant facilities is a function of several factors and has as its objective the maximization of profits, given fixed markets and sources of raw material locations. In practice there are several sites, any one of which or a combination of two or more would be suitable to meet the basic requirements of source of supply of raw material and labour and still fulfill market demands. The model used to select the optimum profit combination utilizes both computer programs and traditional financial analysis techniques. Of the three computer programs used in the mode), one is a linear program and another is a transportation simulator. Basic cost and price data are required. In examining costs, three levels are used: (a) distribution costs of raw material to the plant and finished goods to the market; (b) direct production costs at the plant, such as labour and locally supplied material; and (c) capital and overhead costs at the plant, such as construction costs, taxes, insurance, and federal and provincial cost allowances. The direct costs generally depend on the scale of operations, so that a large plant in one location may have a lower unit cost than two smaller plants. This, of course, must be balanced against distribution costs. In examining profit, it is necessary to think in terms of the price and volume of sales at each of the market locations. Given basic data and relationships, the model can be used to optimally locate production facilities or, alter-natively, optimally structure a transportation network given existing locations of plants and markets. It is dynamic to the extent that it can react to changes in volume, price and cost to optimally locate an additional plant, the expansion of existing plants, the shutting down or cutting back of plants, or the restructuring of distribution networks."

The measurement of acoustic signals produced by a tumbling mill has been previously used to determine the operating state of the mill and correlate the variations of the sound intensity with the operating conditions of the mill. Separately, the discrete element model (DEM), a software simulation of the mill, was developed to provide insight into the operation of the mill. Presently, there has not been much work reconciling the DEM simulation of the mill with the acoustic signal. Working from basic principles of linear, time-invariant systems, agreement between an acoustic DEM simulation and the measured signal is sought. First, the impulse response function of the mill is measured. The DEM provides the forces applied to the mill shell as a function of time. A convolution of these simulated shell forces and the transfer function gives the simulated acoustic signal. This signal is compared to the measured acoustic signal, both in the time domain and the frequency domain. Finally, a discussion of the results is given.

Electrical resistance heating to effect thermal fragmentation of semiconductive rock was examined by the Bureau of Mines. Tests were carried out on copper-bearing ores of the Nonesuch Shale Formation in the laboratory and in the the field at White Pine, Mich. Fieldwork included primary and secondary breakage tests. Heating tests on in situ rock failed to produce thermal dam-age to an extent considered useful; however, boulders up to 30 ft3 were effectively broken by the method. Power input to the test rock was taken from a 50-kV, 5-amp dc power supply.

THE manufacture of nickel-clad steel plate and the fabrication of articles from it has progressed far enough to permit a general description of the working methods used. The manufacture of sheets made up of layers of nickel and steel is not new as a sheet of this character was patented in Germany in 1893. Present development differs mainly in the size and finish of the product. The earlier light-gage highly finished products have been limited in their application due to their similarity, in certain respects, to electro-plated and highly finished alloy sheets. The new product is a relatively heavy plate 1/4 or 3/s in. thick and heavier, with one side coated with nickel, the weight of nickel being of the order of 10 per cent of the whole. The finish is that of hot-rolled steel plate.

The DuBois fluorite property in the southwestern part of Hardin County, Ill., has been active intermittently since 1904 and has produced an estimated total of 1,000 to 2,000 tons. The persistence of the vein and the stratigraphy suggested extensions of the ore body formerly mined. The Bureau of Mines investigated the property by core drilling early in 1944. Four holes were bored which totaled 1,106 feet and extended along a strike length of 1,150 feet. The data obtained in the course of the investigation are presented in this report.

Os compósitos produzidos a partir de Nitreto cúbico de Boro (cBN) são utilizados nos processos de usinagem de materiais ferrosos, tais como, peças fabricadas a partir de ligas ferrosas, ligas a base de níquel e materiais ferrosos com dureza de 45 HRc. Os compósitos a base de cBN são produzidos sinterizando cBN e seus ligantes sob condições de altas pressões e altas temperaturas (APAT). O presente trabalho tem como objetivo a caracterização microestrutural dos compósitos nanoestruturados de cBN, processados sob altas pressões e altas temperaturas, com parâmetros de pressão de 6,6 GPa e 1800oC e tempo de processamento cíclico e acíclico. Os compósitos produzidos foram testados na usinagem de aço 4140. Os resultados mostraram que uma melhor densificação e uma menor perda de massa dos compósitos durante a usinagem tem relação com os parâmetros de sinterização e com o tempo de processamento.
