The Masbate Province, Philippines, has been a gold producer for many years. Several gold properties were profitably operating until the outbreak of World War II in 1941. One of these properties was the Masbate Consolidated Mining Company that at the time showed an impressive production rate of more than 4,000 metric tons of ore per day and one of the lowest milling costs on record in the country at that time. Interesting enough, t was the milling equipment left abandoned at Masbate that gave birth to one of the giant copper producers in ASIA. In 1955, Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corporation started a new operation at its copper property in Cebu with the seven 2.4m 0 x 3m long (8'0 x 10' long) ball mills left abandoned at the old Masbate Gold Mine. Now, 25 years later, Atlas is processing over 100,000 metric tons of copper ore per day through its three copper concentrators, and, the seven old mills are still grinding, copper ores now.

"A study of processing pyrite cinder and metallurgical slag using “one step” technology in strand grate - rotary kiln is presented, which aims to efficiently recover the valuable metals of iron, lead, zinc and copper. The effect of chloridizing roasting parameters including roasting time and temperature on the removal rates of nonferrous metals was investigated. It is shown that copper and zinc are difficult to remove and lead is removed more easily. The preheated pellets were reduced in a rotary kiln, where zinc and lead can be removed easily and high iron grade and good metallurgical performance prereduced pellets can be obtained. Furthermore, the chlorination and the reduction mechanisms of copper, lead and zinc are discussed. It is revealed that the phases of copper, lead and zinc in slag are complex and ferrite and silicate of metals are difficult to remove.IntroductionAs two kinds of significant secondary resources, metallurgical slag and pyrite cinder contain not only abundant iron but also considerable copper, lead, zinc and so on. Several tens of millions of tons of metallurgical slag and pyrite cinder are discharged in nonferrous metal and chemical industries annually in China [1, 2]. In addition, the accumulated waste slag in storage is more than one hundred million tons, which not only occupies much land but also pollutes the environment [3]. However, because the metallurgical slag and pyrite cinder are treated by high temperature processing, the properties are distinctly different from the properties of natural ores, and iron is in close association with copper, lead and zinc. So, metallurgical slag and pyrite cinder are difficult to efficiently utilize and only a small amount is used as additives in cement, paving, brickmaking and auxiliary additives [4-7]."

The microstructural features produced in friction stir welded AZ31, AZ80 and AZ91 alloys are examined when different welding parameters are applied. The microstructures primarily consist of a-Mg grains with a-Mg + Mg17A112 colonies, however melted films of Mg17A112 are produced in AZ91 alloy when high rotation speeds are applied. When the rotation speeds are slow, or the travel speeds are fast the Mg17A112 were incorporated into the stir zone, however they do not exhibit an elongated lamellar morphology associated with melted films. In the case of AZ80, the extruded base material contains a smaller fraction of Mg17A112 and few of these phases are observed in the stir zones. The results are explained based on the dissolution rate and melting temperatures of Mg17A112 controlling the overall morophology and fraction of phases in the stir zone.

Ferric (Fe3+) ions are omnipresent in flotation circuits. Depending on pH and the nature of the ore body, Fe3+ ions may play a role in the adsorption of thiol collectors on sulfide minerals. To investigate this possibility, a two-compartment galvanic coupling cell was designed. This cell was used to monitor changes in contact angle of a sulfide mineral in one compartment, while varying concentrations of the Fe3+ ions in the other. The results showed that Fe3+ ions promote xanthate adsorption as indicated by the increase in contact angle. Implications of this finding in sulfide mineral flotation in general will be discussed.

"This paper begins with a brief discussion of the geology of the Newfoundland Zinc Mine area. The results of groundwater studies and pumping tests are then presented. It was decided that groundwater in the mine could best be controlled by conventional sump pumping and grouting. The system is fully described, as well as plans for improvements on the method. LocationThe Newfoundland Zinc Mine is located in the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, six miles northeast of Daniel's Harbour. The mine is situated at an elevation of approximately 350 feet above sea level, 5 miles farther inland , west of the long range of mountains which rise abruptly with elevations of over 2,000 feet above sea level.GeologyThe ore deposits occur in lower Ordovician carbonate rocks that form part of the stable St. Lawrence platform, which is mainly composed of (1) the lower Cambrian Labrador group, (2) the upper Cambrian to lower Ordovician St. George group, (3) the disconformity overlying Middle Ordovician limestones and shales of the Table Head formation and, (4) two overlying klippen composed of Cambrian and lower Ordovician rocks.The ore deposit is a Mississippi Valley type of the Tennessee variety, having proven are reserves of 5.3 million tons averaging 9.70/0 zinc from eleven ore zones which exist in an area of 5.5 square miles.Among these ore zones, the L zone is the major underground mining area, and is by far the largest of the known deposits. It has proven are reserves of 3.4 million tons with 11.5% zinc; this underground development has been inprogress since 1974.Stratigraphically, the orebody, which occurs about 300 feet below the disconformities between the Table Head and St. George formations, is situated in the upper St. George formationof lower Ordovician age.The upper St. George formation of the L zone is divided into three main units (Fig . I) : the underlying lower limestone the middle grey dolomite pseudo breccia unit and the overlying siliceous dolomite unit. In this area of the mine, the beds of the St. George formation dip gently west to northwest to 10 to 15 degrees. The orebody, which is generally strata controlled with a southwesterly plunge and which has the form of thin, narrow, but elongate, en-echelon ore bed s, is contained in grey dolomite pseudo breccia. Its dimensions vary from 50 to 900 feet in width and 8 to 120 feet in thickness, and the over-alllength exceed s 6,000 feet.The surficial deposit of the area is a till comprising a heterogeneous mixture of sand, gravel, cobbles and boulders, with an average depth of 20 feet."

Shales from 14 locations in Indiana were sampled , tested , and evaluated to determine feasibility of producing lightweight aggregates by rotary - kiln and sintering methods . Sampling procedures and the geology of the significant shale units are discussed . Preliminary testing was conducted in a muffle furnace , and continuous tests were made in a 16 - inch by 14 - foot rotary kiln . The aggregate weighed 37.0 to 47.2 pounds per cubic foot . Concrete cubes employing the aggregate were tested to determine the qualities of the concrete . Compressive strength of the concrete using seven bags of cement per cubic yard , after autoclave curing for 6 hours , ranged from 3,600 to 5,850 pounds per square inch . Four samples made suitable lightweight aggregate in the laboratory rotary kiln . Four samples tested by sintering methods made unsatisfactory aggregate .

This paper describes Mohave Mining and Milling Co. methods of mining and milling manganese ore in Arizona. It is one of a series of publications prepared by the Bureau of Mines on methods and costs in various mining districts in the United States. Production of manganese ore, as such, in Arizona began in 1915. Before this time manganiferous ores had been mined primarily for silver content and used as a smelter flux. From 1916 to 1918 approximately 69,000 long tons of manganese and mangsniferous ores were mined. After World War I production dropped to almost nothing until World War II, during which period more than 24,000 long tons were produced. A lull in mangonese mining occurred after World War II, having production rates of only a few hundred tons annually through 1952.

The White Pine Mine is situated in Ontonagon County, approximately six miles south of Lake Superior, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (Figs. 1 and 2). The ore body mined by White Pine Copper Company occurs in the lower - most 20 to 25 feet of the Nonesuch formation, a series of middle - to upper Keweenawan shales, siltstones, and sandstones. This paper elaborates on the solution of problems in ore grade control and mine planning arising from the presence of an essentially barren sandstone stratum within the ore body.

Fracture toughness of oil shale is an essential property in fragmentation to optimize particle sizes and permeability distributions in in-situ processes. Fracture mechanics of oil shale has been based on conventional fracture mechanics using notched samples and assuming the material to be isotropic and elastic. Oil shale is a layered material more accurately characterized as transversely isotropic. The senior author proposes to use a semi- circular core specimen with a center crack subjected to three point bending. Singular crack tip elements with isoparametric elements are used. The precracked semi-circular disk is modeled under displacement loading. The effect of crack length on the non-dimensionalized stress intensity factor is investigated by strain energy method, ellipse method, and stress method. Very close agreements are found. The fracture toughness is obtained by compressing the specimen in to failure. Parameters such as oil yield are investigated.

International mineral disclosure standards and guidelines aligned with the CRIRSCO (Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards) template were developed to inform stakeholders about the relative accuracy and confidence levels of publicly reported information and to support investment decisions, particularly when advancing projects through different development stages. The traditional stages range from early to advanced exploration, through pre-development (with Mineral Resources and pre-feasibility and/or feasibility levels of study) before the final development stages, where a decision to proceed with construction or production (or both) is made. The traditional definition of Mineral Resource and Ore/Mineral Reserve classification categories and techno-economic study levels (including Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA), Scoping Study (SS), Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) and Feasibility Study (FS)) were defined with pre-development project assessment in mind. As such, these definitions are not necessarily well aligned to the reporting structures required by operating mines which need to consider a range of timelines spanning short to long-term operating conditions. However, the same terminology and definitions are used, or expected to be used, by both project developers and mine operators when reporting resources, reserves and techno-economic study outcomes. This paper discusses how various stakeholders in the minerals industry (including competent/qualified persons, mining company leaders, investors, lenders and regulators), generally interpret the definitions of Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve categories in terms of the relative accuracy of the estimates, their link to techno-economic study levels and their contribution to life-of-mine (LOM) schedules. The paper examines the degree to which mining companies recognise, and apply, enhanced operational knowledge to reflect short-term views of the relative accuracy and confidence levels associated with publicly reported Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates and forecasts. Furthermore, this paper explores how this knowledge is applied to support ongoing Mineral Resource, and particularly Ore Reserve, generation and reporting. This paper is informed by public data and responses to an internal survey prepared by the authors and completed in 2021 by several mining companies.

The South Island Line (East) will be a medium-capacity railway covering approximately 7 km from Admiralty Station to South Horizons Station on the south side of Aberdeen Harbour in Hong Kong, with intermediate stations at Ocean Park, Wong Chuk Hang and Lei Tung.South Island Line (East) Contract 904 project is located on the island of Ap Lei Chau at the southern side of Hong Kong island and requires extensive construction works to be completed in close proximity to the existing residential estates of South Horizons and Lei Tung. The project also has areas of significant cultural heritage, including 18th and 19th century temples and historical gravesites. Owing to the site access constraints and location for the project, detailed planning and methodology innovations have been required to ensure the most effective and responsible means of delivering the project works. To excavate the tunnels using drill-and-blast techniques in these restricted locations, the maximum instantaneous charge weight that could be fired while blasting was severely limited. To overcome these restrictions, the project team developed and pioneered the use of ‘deck loading’ in Hong Kong to minimise the impact of blasting operations and has successfully implemented double- and triple-deck blasting operations during the completion of tunnel excavation works.Upon completion of the drill-and-blast excavation, the tunnel lining works were completed using both in situ concrete lining with travelling forms and permanent shotcrete works.CITATION:Curlewis, W, Cuthbert, Z and Hake, D, 2014. Operating experience with the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell showed that under conventional operating conditions, although the thermal efficiency of the plant was very' high, the physical quality of the char produced was extremely poor. By variation of operating conditions to produce the slow drying rate developed by the laboratory research at the University of Melbourne, an improvement in the size of the char was achieved. A similar approach in the carbonization stage where severe breakage of the briquettes still occurred was not possible due to insufficient control over the heating in this stage. Theoretical analysis of the heat exchange process has shown that severe heating of the briquettes entering the carbonizer is a characteristic of the Lurgi system and cannot be controlled by modified operation. The plant has been closed down for reconstruction of the heating system to enable it to be used to produce hard char.INTRODUCTIONAn experimental carbonization plant was operated at the Morwell Works of the 'Gas and Fuel Corporation from November 1958 until July 1959. This plant was built as a pilot plant by the Corporation to designs supplied by the Lurgi Gesellschaft fur Warmetechnik and had the nominal capacity to carbonize 25 tons of brown coal briquettes and to produce 11 tons of char per day. The briquettes were supplied from the· normal production of the Yallourn briquette factory and the 2t in. "Rotary percussion" implies two types of energy, rotary and percussion. Into these categories fall rock' drills of varying sizes. The larger ones drill above 6" diameter holes; the medium size, 2 3/4" to 4 1/2" holes; and the smallest, 1 1/4" to 2" holes. Essentially, the larger holes are drilled with doom-the-hole drills using tri-cone bits. Percussion energy evolves from the drill piston and rotation power from the rotary table or overhead drive, using drill collars or pull down mechanism to preload the bit.

"Lonmin Platinum has experienced several cases of large-scale hangingwall instabilities during the extraction of the Upper Group 2 Chromitite Layer (UG2) at a number of the Marikana operations along the Western Limb of the Bushveld Complex. These instabilities were all attributed to the presence and interaction of prominent geological features and highlighted that assumptions made in the design of the stable pillars and stable span were potentially overly simplistic in these areas. Investigations into the various case studies over the past ten years have resulted in the identification and classification of the rock mass characteristics of the geological structures causing the instabilities.In order to get a better understanding of these instabilities, it is important to understand the structural geology in general, and the sequence of events that led to the formation of the Bushveld Complex in particular. The tectonics involved in the formation of the various layers around the economic mineralized layers has been investigated, and the influence of these tectonic events on the stability of the UG2 stopes hypothesized.Following this investigation, the behaviour of the various layers in the hangingwall of the UG2 is better understood. This paper presents a description of the ground conditions being experienced in the underground stoping environment, the possible source of the associated structures and the resultant behavioural mechanism of these structures causing the rock mass instabilities."

O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do tempo de recozimento na resistência à corrosão do aço inoxidável duplex UNS S32205 laminado a frio. Quando o aço duplex é submetido a deformações intensas, a austenita transforma-se parcialmente em martensita, elevando a resistência mecânica do aço. Já quando é feito o recozimento essa transformação é revertida, ou seja, a martensita se transforma em austenita. Porém, esses aços apresentam forte tendência à formação de fases secundárias quando expostos a determinadas temperaturas por certo intervalo de tempo, que levam à deterioração das propriedades mecânicas e corrosivas dos mesmos. O aço estudado foi submetido à laminação a frio até 60% de redução da espessura, e posteriormente recozido a 850°C, temperatura na qual a cinética de precipitação de fases é máxima, nos tempos de 300, 600, 1800 e 86400 segundos. Para a análise microestrutural foram utilizadas as técnicas de microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e a difração de raios-X. A resistência à corrosão foi estudada por meio da técnica de impedância eletroquímica (EIE), utilizando solução de NaCl 3,5% à temperatura ambiente. O aumento do tempo de recozimento aumentou a precipitação das fases secundárias, o que leva ao aumento de regiões empobrecidas em Cr e Mo. Com o aumento do tempo de recozimento, essas regiões são parcialmente recuperadas pela difusão desses elementos, melhorando a resistência à corrosão.

A casca de arroz é um resíduo amplamente gerado no mundo, é o principal subproduto do beneficiamento do arroz, e tem sido utilizada como biomassa para geração de energia, o que reduz o impacto ambiental causado pela destinação. No entanto, gera outro resíduo, a cinza de casca de arroz (CCA). A CCA é composta basicamente por sílica e carbono. Sendo os elementos traço mais comumente encontrados o sódio, potássio, cálcio, magnésio, ferro, cobre, manganês e zinco. Pelo elevado teor de sílica, é um resíduo com potencial para ser transformado em coproduto para diversas indústrias, porém, dependendo da aplicação pode ser necessária maior pureza. Assim, diversos estudos utilizaram a lixiviação ácida para reduzir o teor de contaminantes ou melhorar propriedades da CCA. Neste sentido, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o beneficiamento de uma CCA residual através do processo de lixiviação ácida. Para isso, foram utilizados diferentes ácidos/concentrações, relações CCA/ácido e tempos de contato. Após estes testes utilizou-se análise elementar por FRX para caracterização química. Os resultados mostraram que o ataque ácido foi efetivo na redução ou eliminação de Fe2O3, K2O, CaO, P2O5 e ZnO para todos os ácidos e concentrações testadas. Sendo que as diferentes concentrações não afetaram a eficiência de remoção.

A indústria siderúrgica possui aspectos ambientais associados ao seu processo produtivo ligados em grande parte à emissão de material particulado, efluentes líquidos e geração de resíduos. A emissão de material particulado ocorre durante diversas etapas do processo produtivo, cabendo a estes a aplicação de sistemas para o controle ambiental. Em especial, a planta de sinterização possui como característica emissões primárias ligadas à exaustão da máquina, e secundárias referentes aos sistemas de captações em linhas de peneiramento, retorno de finos e pontos de transferência de correias transportadoras. Para o tratamento das emissões secundárias, a ArcelorMittal Tubarão possui um sistema de despoeiramento. Em virtude de melhorias de processo e alterações na produção, o sistema necessita de uma maior vazão para atendimento à demanda atual. Neste contexto, este trabalho se propôs a avaliar e testar a técnica de supressão de pó em pontos de transferência entre correias transportadoras para verificar sua aplicabilidade. Como conclusão, constatou-se que esta técnica é aplicável em regiões específicas com bons resultados na redução de emissão visível. Além disso, o uso do supressor reduz a quantidade de captações necessárias ao sistema complementando o controle do atual sistema de despoeiramento.

A fabricação de matrizes para forjamento a quente vem sendo estudada com maior atenção nos últimos anos devido à necessidade de fabricação das ferramentas com maior rapidez e menor custo, estudo do processo de usinagem, com melhores propriedades mecânicas a fim de aumentar sua vida útil. Para atender as atuais necessidades do mercado são utilizados softwares de CAD e CAM e principalmente de máquinas CNC, que além da rapidez garantem a qualidade da usinagem das matrizes. O objetivo deste artigo é demonstrar, através de um estudo de caso, as etapas para a fabricação das matrizes superior e inferior, para forjamento a quente. Foram utilizados sistemas de CAD e CAM, o SolidWorks para modelagem da peça e das cavidades da ferramenta, e o software Edgecam para a programação e simulação da usinagem. As facilidades obtidas com a integração entre os sistemas CAD/CAM e máquina CNC conferem a manufatura de ferramentas muitos benefícios, dentre eles destaca-se a rapidez com a qual se pode fabricar uma matriz.

Los aceros para armaduras de hormigón tienen que exhibir una buena relación entre resistencia y tenacidad que se ve reflejado en la performance del producto en servicio al ser aplicado a esfuerzos exigidos. Acerbrag es una empresa que produce aceros para la industria de la construcción teniendo en su gama los aceros de medio carbono para la fabricación de barras conformadas de dureza natural para armaduras en estructuras de hormigón. El objetivo de este trabajo es encontrar criterios de ventanas de trabajos operacionales y de control para la manufactura de aceros con buenas propiedades mecánicas en términos de resistencia y tenacidad. Este paper muestra los resultados de los trabajos realizados en las diferentes áreas productivas para conseguir un producto final con mayor resistencia a altas exigencias en servicio, además, reporta diferentes aspectos del proceso de manufactura del producto que van desde el ajuste de la composición química del acero, incluyendo criterios de propiedades mecánicas objetivos, criterios de calidad interna mostrando la microestructura de la barra antes y después de los cambios y finalmente la calidad dimensional y superficial de la barra nervurada, este último potenciando la falla prematura del material. Todos estos cambios, se ven reflejados finalmente en la performance de la barra, sometida a los nuevos criterios de exigencia en los ensayos mecánicos.

Zinc-vapor pressures in equilibrium with bcc solutions of zinc and iron at 703.5", 757", 793", and 900°C were measured by an isopiestic method. Thermody-na?nic properties of zinc in these solutions were derived directly and those of iron with a Gibbs-Duhem integration. Zirzc and iron exhibit large, positive, and moderately temperature-sensitive deviations from ideality. Excess enthalpies and Gibbs energies are positive in the ranges studied. It has been establzshed in relating published phase equilibria to the Gibbs energies of forming solid solutions that positive departures from ideality also exist in the fcc solutions. Tlze stability, as defined by Darken, of the bcc solutions is small but positive at 703.5"C. Its decrease with decreasing temperature indicates that a miscibility gap may exist in the stable or metastable bcc solutions at lower temperatures. The changes of thertnodynanlic properties relatable to changes in magnetic state are minor compared to other changes due to alloying. The accuracy with which the relation between lattice parameter and composition of the bcc solutions is known has been improved. Zinc increases the lattice parameter of a iron by O.ZOZA per unit atom action zinc to at least NZn = 0.25. TO our knowledge, only Ciganl has previously investigated thermodynamic properties of the bcc solutions of the Fe-Zn system. He measured zinc-vapor pressures in the temperature range from about 320" to 360°C by an effusion technique. We have measured the vapor pressures of zinc in equilibrium with bcc solutions of zinc and iron at 703.5", 757", 793", and 900°C by an isopiestic technique. This investigation and the pursuant thermodynamic computations are part of a program for studying several properties of these solid solutions. In the appendix we report a remeasurement of the relation at room temperature between the lattice parameter and zinc content. Related work not reported herein embraces measuring the diffusivity2 of zinc in ferrite at 700" to 900°C and the Curie point temperature3 as functions of composition. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD AND APPARATUS Purified iron at a series of constant temperatures was saturated with zinc at a series of constant zinc-vapor pressures, the range of conditions being so limited that the equilibrated solid solutions were ferri-tic. The equilibration was conducted in long capsules, Fig. 1, that had been evacuated, gettered with titanium, and sealed. The purified iron, part of a vacuum-melted ingot of electrolytic-iron stock (Glidden Co. 1044-grade), had the impurity contents listed in Table I. It was used in the form of millings about 0.001 in. thick. A zinc of 99.999 pct purity (United Mineral and Chemical Corp.) and later one of 99.9999 pct purity (Cominco Products, Inc.) were used, with no observed difference in results. Sufficient zinc was placed in the capsule (separate from the iron and kept at a different temperature) to supply the vapor phase and the iron alloy, while leaving a pool of pure liquid zinc throughout the run. The imposed temperature of the residual zinc pool fixed the vapor pressure of zinc throughout the capsule; condensation was avoided at other locations by making this the lowest temperature in the capsule. Two common complications of nonisothermal systems were, we believe, effectively absent from ours: first, molecular species other than monatomic have no appreciable concentration in zinc vapor at 700" to 900~~: second, the development of zinc-pressure differentials in the capsules was suppressed by use of relatively large-diameter tubing and the absence of diluents in the zinc vapor other than desorbed impurities. The specimens and zinc pool were located at two isothermal zones (each ranging within 1°C over several inches) of a wire-wound, 37-in.-long vertical-tube furnace. The required temperature distribution was achieved by external adjustment of the currents in three electrically isolated windings.
