The purpose of this talk is to report the answers to the-'two following questions: I. What unique services does the mining industry expect of mining and mineral processing engineers? II. What suggestions does industry offer to educators to help revamp curricula to meet the needs of a changing industry? As the result of many questionnaires filled out in person by presidents, managers, superintendents, chief engineers, metallurgists, and other responsible individuals in operations and management of large and small metal and nonmetallic mining companies in the U. S., and to some extent abroad, we now have some, specific answers to the above questions. Although answers to questionnaires continue to arrive at this writing (February 10) the volume already received is sufficient to clearly justify certain conclusions and observations. A copy of the tally of the first 117 questionnaires received accompanies this report, and I am certain that a compilation of additional questionnaire data will merely reinforce, the trends in thinking that have been' established thus far. No lingotamento contínuo a busca pelo aumento de produtividade tem sido realizada com sequências longas, ou seja, várias corridas e muitas vezes com aços de diferentes composições químicas. Isso resulta na geração de placas de mistura e vários trabalhos buscam entender este processo. Este estudo tem como objetivo validar o modelo matemático de mistura existe no lingotamento da Gerdau Ouro Branco para garantir a correta aplicação da região de mistura, visando atender às especificações dos produtos, norma ASTM A36. Os resultados encontrados nas placas amostradas confirmaram a eficiência do modelo para estimar a zona de mistura. Além disso, para garantir a aplicação dessas placas na norma estudada foi utilizado o modelo de previsibilidade de propriedades mecânicas existente na laminação de chapas grossas. Finalmente, os resultados reais de composição química, limite de escoamento e resistência encontrados nas chapas avaliadas confirmaram as previsões dos modelos e atenderam às especificações do aço.

A otimização da matriz energética na produção de metais tem sido um dos tópicos predominantes mundialmente. Um dos principais consumidores ineficientes de energia, em alguns casos impactando inclusive no consumo de fornos elétricos são os sistemas de aquecimento de panelas. Buscando novas alternativas de redução de custos de energia, e redução de emissões, a White Martins encontrou uma alternativa técnica aos convencionais Pré-Aquecedores de panelas ar-gás. É o Sistema de Aquecimento de Panelas Oxicombustão com queimador Optifire, que utiliza oxigênio puro como comburente ou ar enriquecido. Comparado ao sistema ar-gás convencional, é possível promover uma economia de combustível de até 50% e redução de emissões de carbono e NOx. A tecnologia do equipamento consiste em realizar a queima estequiométrica balanceada, através da medição precisa dos gases, utilizando queimadores avançados com maior eficiência e melhorando a distribuição de calor, de forma a não gerar diferenças de temperatura entre seções. Com a tecnologia Optifire é possível inclusive o remanejamento de combustível mais nobre, como gás de coqueria em processos como aquecimento de regeneradores de altos-fornos. Este trabalho descreverá o estudo da oportunidade e dimensionamento para aquecedores de panela.

Atividades industriais, especialmente relacionadas ao segmento de MMM, têm força econômica considerável além de significativa relevância no cotidiano da população. Neste contexto a disseminação da importância do uso sustentável dos recursos energéticos vem sendo um grande destaque. Diante da necessidade em se atingir a eficiência energética de forma plena, a indústria tem investido em infraestrutura e equipamentos que tem o objetivo de disponibilizar as informações de consumos e demandas de equipamentos e linhas de produção através de medidores inteligentes e conectividade entre as "ilhas" de informação espalhadas no site. A fim de relacionar e disponibilizar os dados obtidos e transformá-los em informação existem diversos softwares com a capacidade de gerar e correlacionar KPIs e análises, evidenciando gaps, direcionando melhorias e até mesmo dar suporte à priorização de investimentos. Esse tipo de abordagem é de extrema importância para que se possam alcançar economias significativas para todas as operações do segmento de MMM.

Rejeitos de mineração descartados na forma de polpa possuem, geralmente, grande quantidade de água e reutilizá-la no processo, por meio de operações de desaguamento mais eficientes é de grande importância para a implementação de projetos de menor impacto ambiental. O presente trabalho visa estudar as operações envolvidas no desaguamento de um rejeito de níquel, com o objetivo de principalmente a maximizar a recuperação de água de processo. Para tanto, foram avaliados: a influência da concentração de sólidos, uso e dosagem de floculante, pressão no filtro, o processo de filtração com e sem prensagem e a influência destas variáveis na umidade da torta e na recuperação de água. Os resultados mostraram que quanto maior a dosagem de floculante menor é a recuperação de água na filtragem; por outro lado, quanto maiores a concentração de sólidos e a pressão, maior a recuperação de água. Verificou-se a importância do uso da prensagem para maximizar a recuperação da água contida no sedimento, sendo possível comprovar que o rejeito de níquel floculado e filtrado com ?P de 6 bar com o uso de prensagem promoveu a recuperação de até 77% de água.

Os aços galvanizados são amplamente utilizados devido à sua excelente resistência à corrosão. Além disso, esses aços apresentam alta qualidade superficial, o que é um requisito importante para aplicações exigentes como as da indústria automobilística. Dentre os parâmetros de processo importantes para a qualidade dos revestimentos está o teor de alumínio no banho de zinco. Nesse estudo, foi utilizado o simulador do processo de galvanização a quente (HDPS), para investigar a influência do teor de alumínio efetivo do banho na qualidade superficial do revestimento galvannealed (GA), sendo avaliados os teores de 0,09% e 0,14%. Para acompanhar os estágios de formação das fases Fe-Zn foram realizadas interrupções do ciclo de galvanização ao longo das etapas de imersão no banho e de tratamento térmico de galvannealing. Utilizando a técnica GDOES, foi possível acompanhar as variações da concentração de alumínio ao longo do revestimento durante a formação das fases Fe-Zn. Os resultados das simulações mostraram que o alumínio efetivo mais baixo no banho favoreceu a cinética de formação das fases Fe-Zn durante o tratamento térmico e diminuiu a ocorrência de regiões com aspecto brilhante no revestimento, melhorando a qualidade superficial.

Visando melhorar a distribuição de micropartículas de diamante (MD) na formulação de compósitos, foi desenvolvida, através da emulsão do sistema epóxi/poliamida em água, uma técnica de encapsulamento de MD. As MD foram pré-recobertas com um polímero baseado no sistema epóxi-poliamida e posteriormente utilizadas como carga na produção de um compósito com matriz da mesma composição do revestimento. A matriz epóxi/poliamida e compósitos com carga de MD encapsulados e sem recobrimento foram avaliados. As propriedades mecânicas foram avaliadas por ensaio de flexão em 3 pontos e por análise de tenacidade à fratura e as propriedades térmicas por DMA. Por MEV foram observadas a microestrutura das MD encapsulados e a superfície de fratura dos corpos de prova após ensaio de flexão. Não foram observados aumentos nas propriedades mecânicas do compósito com carga MD encapsulados em relação ao compósito com carga de MD não modificados. Esse resultado foi devido à adição ao sistema de defeitos estruturais como bolhas e ar e porosidade provenientes do uso das MD encapsulados. Foi observado porém, melhor distribuição das MD no sistema e uma melhor adesão à matriz para a carga de MD encapsulados em relação à carga de MD não revestidos, em função dos resultados obtidos por DMA.

O acirramento da competição no mercado de aço tem exigido esforços de inovação e redução de custos. Por sua vez, as técnicas agrupadas como ICME - Integrated Computational Materials Engineering vêm acelerando o desenvolvimento e a otimização de materiais e processos de fabricação. O emprego destas técnicas tem sido uma ferramenta extra para assegurar a competitividade na indústria. Neste trabalho o uso da termodinâmica computacional no desenvolvimento e processamento de aços elétricos é revisado através da discussão de exemplos. Cálculos de equilíbrios mais relevantes para o processo de fabricação destes aços (tanto de grão não orientado-GNO como orientado-GO) permitem obter informações sobre as transformações de fases, solubilização de precipitados (sulfetos e nitretos) essenciais para a obtenção de texturas cristalográficas ideais. Os cálculos são discutidos e comparados com resultados reais. Discutem-se ainda, cálculos no sistema aço-gás, e os efeitos da composição da atmosfera na formação de óxidos na superfície do aço. Tais cálculos são importantes para descrever previamente as transformações que ocorrem durante as várias etapas de fabricação, assim como os efeitos dos parâmetros de processo sob os aços elétricos. A aplicação da técnica permite otimizar o processamento e o desenvolvimento dos aços elétricos em diversos aspectos. As vantagens e limitações do método, assim como o potencial de outras técnicas de ICME, na área, são discutidas.

Nos últimos anos a indústria automotiva vem conseguindo avançar de forma contínua em relação ao controle da emissão de CO2 e no tocante à segurança veicular. O aumento da utilização de aços de alta resistência mecânica se constitui num dos principais sustentáculos destas melhorias. Além disso, na manufatura de certas peças, em especial as de geometria complexa, é fator crítico de sucesso a capacidade do material em absorver intensas deformações localizadas, tipicamente encontradas em operações de expansão de furo. O aço desenvolvido pela Usiminas é um produto laminado a frio, com revestimento eletrogalvanizado, da classe de 600 MPa de limite de resistência, com boas propriedades de flangeamento de bordas e de alongamento em tração. Neste trabalho, é apresentado o desenvolvimento deste aço. São descritas as suas principais características e os resultados de sua aplicação em uma peça de geometria complexa.

Current production costs and market conditions in the potash industry of the Carlsbad area were studied to determine the potential values of the potash mineral resource that would be lost or foregone if the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) facility is constructed on the proposed site in that area. The purpose of the WIPP project is to investigate the possibility of developing a nuclear waste disposal plant in the salt formations at the site. Analyses were made of all potash deposits determined to be in the site. Mining and processing under the most favorable recovery systems were considered. Value determinations were based upon estimated operating and capital costs of current mine-mill operations in the Carlsbad area. This study was made for the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) by members of the Federal Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability System staff.

"Ground deformation and support response was monitored in a longwall gateroad as part of a research project into gateroad stability under changing loading conditions. In this study, instrumentation was installed in a gateroad located between two active longwall panels. The first panel to pass was the second panel in the district, and the second panel to pass the instrumentation sites was the third panel in the district. All of the panels in the district were right-handed. All of the instrumentation was installed in the number one entry, the tailgate, the second panel to pass the instrumentation sites at a mid-pillar location, and at an outby intersection location under about 600 feet of cover. The instrumentation included roof extensometers, cable bolt load cells, hollow inclusion cells, borehole pressure cells, standing support load cells, and convergence sensors, and a multipoint borehole extensometer. The roof extensometers measured roof convergence and sag. The cable bolt load cells measured the roof load applied to the cable bolts in the secondary support array. Hollow inclusion cells measured the magnitude and direction of the principal and shear stresses. The borehole pressure cells measured the stress on a pillar in the entry nearest to the second panel to pass the instrument site. The instrumented wood cribs in the entry nearest the second panel recorded the closure and load on the cribs, and the multipoint borehole extensometer in a pillar closest to the second panel recorded the location and width of cracks that occurred and total expansion of the pillar. This paper describes the effects of the changing stress caused by the first panel as it approached and passed the locations of the instruments on the opposite side of the gateroad system and the later effect caused by the second panel as it approached and passed the mid-pillar instrument location. The first panel passing caused significant loading at the mid-pillar instrument location, but not at the intersection location, while the second panel had passed the mid-pillar location and just arrived at the intersection location when the dataloggers needed to be removed."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the conversion, at both laboratory and pilot plant scale, of a low-grade ilmenite to chlorination-grade feedstock that could substitute for imported rutile used to produce titanium tetrachloride. The concentrate was derived from the Tahawus, NY, lode deposit of ilmenite-magnetite in rock that contains anorthosite and gabbro. Charges of the ilmenite concentrate, containing 46.6 wt pct Ti02 blended with soda ash, were carbothermically reduced in an electric arc furnace, which separated most of the iron and left a high-titanium slag. However, the slag contained Ca, Mg, and Mn constituents that rendered the material unsuitable for continuous chlorination by causing plugging problems. After being ground and pelletized, the slag was reacted with S02 and air at 7000 to 9000 C, which selectively converted the harmful impurities to soluble compounds that were removed in a subsequent water or dilute HCI leach. In laboratory tests, the combined levels of harmful impurities were decreased from 5 to as low as 0.5 wt pct in leached slags. In pilot plant tests, leached slags sulfated at a rate of 10 lb/h averaged 85.5 wt pct Ti02 with pertinent impurity levels averaging 1.86 wt pct. The leached slag was successfully chlorinated in a laboratory fluidized-bed reactor at 9500 C to extract titanium as TiCI4.

Computation is believed to be a powerful tool in scaling-up chemical processes and in designing materials, however, is being challenged by low predictability and limited scalability. This presentation will discuss the promising future of multi-scale computation in solving these two problems to realise the real-time simulation of industrial processes. Multi-scale structures are a common nature of most chemical systems and the meso-scale phenomena are believed to be the road blocks not only in improving the predictability of physical modeling but also in extending the scalability of computation. Focusing on the meso-scale phenomena, a series of research has been carried out at the Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, for the past three decades. Starting with a simple idea of modeling the meso-scale clusters in gas-solid two phase flows, the so-called EMMS (Energy-Minimisation Multi-Scale) model was established. In verifying the stability condition of the model, the pseudo-particle approach was proposed to explore the micro-mechanisms in particle-fluid systems, and the strategy of the EMMS model was extended to other six different multi-phase systems, resulting in a unified conceptual formulation of multi-phase complex systems expressed by a multi-objective variational problem. In applying this model to different multi-phase systems and to industrial problems, it was recognised that the EMMS model defined a new paradigm of multi-scale computation by realising the structural similarity between software, hardware and the problems to be computed. This paradigm of computation was implemented on a multi-scale supercomputer with a capacity of 1.0 petaflops by integrating CPUs and GPUs (Graphic Processing Units), showing high efficiency and low cost. Running the EMMS model on this computer, the simulation of hydrodynamics of multi-phase systems can be speeded up very much, indicating a promising future of virtual reality of process engineering. The presentation will review this series of work, introduce successful applications in industries, and will be concluded by emphasising the critical importance of the meso-scale phenomena as the bridge between macro-dominants and micro-mechanisms. "The diverting of men from industry to combat in the world's war focused the attention of the operators in this country upon mechanical means of doing things. The demand for man-power -was so insistent that every available agency for multiplying it had to be employed. It was during the 1period of the war and immediately thereafter that development of the use of underground loading devices made most rapi4 progress. In all parts of the United States, mining engineers and mine managers were diligent in their efforts to develop mechanical loaders. The mining engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines in every section of the country have secured, with the cooperation of the mine operators, data on the actual performance of the mechanical shovels in their districts, and have made them available to the author of this paper.No effort has been made to discuss exhaustively the subject of underground loading devices. It has been the object to collect together in one paper, records of the performance of all machines now in actual use. Improvements in the design of machines are constantly being made the performance records given in this paper relate to operation prior to March 1 1 1921. The records prior to 1920 cay not fully represent the work that could be accomplished with the present models of the same machine.The data secured are given exactly as reported by the mine operators. Since this data were collected there have been two underground loaders, of a different design, put into operation in the iron mines of the Lake Superior District. One is the John Mayne Sub-level loader, being tried by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., Ishpeming, Mich., and the other is the Cole-Goudie shovel, being tried by the Oliver Mining Company, at Ironwood, Mich. No information has been secured regarding the performance of either of these machines."

High silica (SiO2), alumina (Al2O3), and phosphorus (P) contents in iron ore adversely affect the quality of iron products. The removal of those impurities from iron ore is an essential point in further iron ore processing. In this paper, the removal of P, SiO2 and Al2O3 impurities from iron ore by alkaline drying followed by reverse cationic flotation is discussed. The reverse cationic flotation experiments are performed using the iron ore samples without and with alkaline drying pretreatment. All other flotation conditions except pulp pH (4–12) and particle size distributions (-45 to -250 μm) are held constant. A typical collector and frother, such as dodecylamine acetate (DAA) and methylisobutylcarbinol (MIBC), are used in the flotation experiments. Alkaline treatment is conducted before flotation using sodium hydroxide at fixed conditions. The impact of alkaline drying on the performance of iron ore flotation is evaluated based on the removal rates of P and SiO2 + Al2O3, iron grade, and iron recovery compared with the iron ore flotation without alkaline drying (direct flotation). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicates hematite and goethite are the main minerals in the iron ore, which assays 62.8 mass per cent Fe, 0.232 mass per cent P, 7.1 mass per cent SiO2 + Al2O3 (total) determined by X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF). Results indicate that a combined approach is more effective for removing P and SiO2 + Al2O3 impurities from iron ore than the direct processing technique because the maximum removal rates of P and SiO2 + Al2O3 are 48.2 per cent and 66.5 per cent from the alkaline dried iron ore when 8.4 per cent and 13.1 per cent from the non-alkaline dried iron ore.

"Mogale Alloys operates two alternating current (AC) submerged arc furnaces (SAFs), and two direct current (DC) open bath furnaces. These furnaces are capable of producing two products, silicomanganese (SiMn) and ferrochrome (FeCr), with a total production capacity of 110 000 t/a. This paper focuses on the silicomanganese process specific to Mogale Alloys, with a two-furnace operation facility that produces 55 000 t of SiMn per annum.IntroductionMogale Alloys is situated in Krugersdorp in the West Rand District Municipality in South Africa’s Gauteng Province. The Krugersdorp facilities were initiated by Palmiet Chrome Corporation in February 1963 to produce charge chrome (Basson, Curr, and Gericke, 2007). Mogale Alloys bought the Palmiet Chrome facilities in 2005 from Samancor Chrome. The Afarak Group currently owns 90% of Mogale Alloys.SiMn is produced in two 20 MVA submerged arc furnaces (SAFs), which were originally built for chromite processing, and ferrochromium (FeCr) in two DC open bath furnaces rated at 40 MVA and 10 MVA. When this paper was compiled, the 10 MVA furnace was not operational due to the high cost of production, and one of the 20 MVA SAFs was recently converted to produce FeCr due to market constraints. Mogale Alloys has 290 permanent employees with four contracting companies on site. The paper presented here focuses on the production of SiMn at Mogale Alloys.The high-level process flow at Mogale Alloys is summarized in Figure 1, which details the raw material input and the products produced by the two 20 MVA furnaces. SiMn is produced by carbothermic reduction of manganese-bearing raw materials from four different sources, namely Wessels, Mamatwan, and UMK ores, and BHP sinter feed. The carbon sources are bituminous coal from Forzando and Msobo, local suppliers in Mpumalanga."

Heap leach processes can encounter diverse flow conditions, such as infiltration into dry ore material, drainage, perched water tables and heterogeneous materials, leading to large variations in permeability and the creation of preferential flow pathways. Climate and meteorological conditions, such as precipitation, evaporation, and temperature, can also have a significant effect on the hydrodynamics of the heap. Nonuniform and adverse flow behavior within the heap contributes to reducing the leaching efficiency of the heap leading to lower metal recoveries. The variability of flow within the heap can result in solute transport problems, which limit the leach reaction kinetics. Therefore, understanding the flow and transport phenomena within the heap is critical in its design and optimization. A comprehensive heap leach model, developed within a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) framework, employs robust algorithms to solve diverse variably saturated flow conditions. The model allows for a wide array of complex thermo-fluid physics to be represented and captures suites of very complex reactions that are closely coupled with thermal conditions and key microbial populations. Employing a three-dimensional heterogeneous ‘test’ heap, a number of flow conditions are investigated and the sensitivity of metal recovery is discussed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the magnetic susceptibility of minerals as a function of mag-netic field strength to determine how it might affect the potential for high-field magnetic separation as an alternative to other separation technologies. Single-mineral concentrates were prepared from specimens from the same deposit to compare magnetic susceptibilities of minerals that occur together and from specimens from different deposits to compare magnetic susceptibilities of like minerals. A vibrating-sample magnetometer with a superconducting magnet capable of producing a magnetic field of 7.16 x 106 Aim (90 kOe) was used to measure the magnetic moment of the samples. The data were then converted to specific magnetic susceptibility data and plotted as a function of magnetic field strength. Cursory studies were also completed on the effects of iron content and oxidation roasts on magnetic susceptibility in high fields. The results showed that magnetic susceptibility is essentially constant in magnetic fields above those needed to saturate ferromagnetic constituents. Although magnetic susceptibility is influenced by iron content and by thermal treatment, the changes are not large enough to influence separations in fields above 1.59 x 106 Aim (20 kOe).
