The Sheep Creek iron deposits, Meagher County, Mont., were investigated by the Bureau of Mines in 1943 and 1944. Work undertaken included exploratory trenching, churn drilling, petrographic studies, and detailed beneficiation tests. It was determined that the Sheep Creek ores occur both as fissure filling and bedding replacements in thin-bedded shale and arenaceous limestones of the Algonkian Belt series. At least five stratigraphic horizons were found to be mineralized. Metallurgical studies indicate that the ores are not amenable to beneficiation by present-day low-cost methods. Details of geology, sampling, and beneficiation tests are presented in this report.

A indústria automobilística é um dos maiores mercados para aços de aplicações de conformação criticas, exigindo contínuo desenvolvimento de novos materiais e tecnologias. Dentre estes, destaca-se o revestimento metálico (GA) que é composto por diferentes fases Fe-Zn com boas propriedades de aplicação, mas o seu comportamento em processos de conformação é sensível à fragilidade das fases intermetálicas, podendo resultar na fragmentação por powdering. A presença da fase ? na superfície é prejudicial à tribologia do revestimento, pois eleva o coeficiente de atrito, a ausência desta fase pode significar transformação excessiva e maior fragilidade do revestimento, reduzindo a resistência ao powdering. A aplicação de filmes de pós-tratamento de pré-fosfatização sobre o GA, com ganhos de conformação através da redução do coeficiente de atrito, tem sido desenvolvido pela ArcelorMittal. Este trabalho objetiva avaliar a tribologia e resistência ao powdering de diferentes condições de superfície do revestimento. A evolução do coeficiente de atrito é determinada por ensaios de desgaste, além de ensaios de powdering e análises metalográficas via MEV-EDS para avaliação do pós-tratamento.

Um estudo visando à caracterização metalográfica e metalúrgica foi realizado em um aço ARBL (alta resistência e baixa liga) tipo X80, soldado com o processo arame tubular (FCAW) robotizado, com três diferentes níveis de energia de soldagem. Para tal foram utilizadas técnicas de metalografia óptica e microdureza Vickers (Hv). Foram depositados cordões de solda em forma de camadas sobre chapas do aço X80, variando a energia de soldagem e sem pré-aquecimento, no estado como soldado. Os resultados mostram que a técnica de sobreposição utilizada, com baixa e média energia de soldagem, não foi suficientemente adequada para melhorar as propriedades metalúrgicas dos cordões depositados anteriormente, inclusive da ZTA do metal de base.Os cordões depositados com alta energia de soldagem promoveram crescimento do tamanho de grão da GGZTA do aço X80 com a consequente diminuição da resistência ao impacto.Este trabalho da subsídios para uma melhor compreensão das soldas multipasses.

The Kilmar dolomitic magnesite deposit~ in sourhwesr Quebec lie in Grenville Province sedimentary rocks that strike north and dip steeply west. The sediments comprise quartzitic, carbonate and argillaceous members. The middle or carbonate member hosts the magnesite and, like the two other members, has been intensely mewmorphosed. Magnesite occurs as lenticular shaped zones of altered limestone and is mixed with 5 to 30% dolomite crystals. Diopside, serpentine and mica are common accessory minerals. Magnesite appears to have formed from merasomarism of all or part of the carbonate member due to intrusion of hot magnesia-rich solutions. Magnesite is mined from a 490 m vertical shaf1 and is milled and burned into clinkers, which then are shipped 10 pyroprocessing industries around the world.

ROASTING is usually thought of as a process in which finely crushed or ground ore is heated with air in a suitable furnace in which the ore is rabbled or agitated in such a way as to insure complete reaction between the oxygen of the air and the oxidisable constituents of the ore. Roasting in this sense is used only to a very limited extent in the iron and steel industry. This is because, in most iron ore deposits mined today, the ore is of a type that does not require roasting. Where this process is used, it is usually because of some special circumstance, such as a peculiar economic condition, that warrants it. If roasting is looked upon in the broader sense as a gas-solid chemical reaction carried out at an elevated temperature in which both gaseous and solid products are formed, then the process is used in the iron and steel industry to a greater extent

Mine planning at Cassiar consists of an annual cycle of projection, control, evaluation and revision following completion of annual diamond drilling during the summer months . The inherent difficulty in evaluating fibre grade and distribution, combined with a high-wall phase or push-back mining system, requires continuous modification to designs and schedules based on a cumulative evaluation of equipment performance and prediction versus production. To expedite the planning sequence, a mini-computer system has been introduced which allows emphasis to be placed on optimizing designs, exempting personnel from manual calculations and tabulations.

The complexities that exist in the nature of the basic feedstock to the metallurgical process call for a high degree of ingenuity from the extractive metallurgist in seeking the best possible treatment method for a particular ore. Drawing from personal experience the author presents four case studies that demonstrate the value of creative thinking in addressing the challenges typically encountered by the extraction metallurgist. It is concluded that creative expression most often occurs in response to a perceived strong need within an organization. By deliberately laying down meaningful challenges management can stimulate innovative thinking and achieve extraordinary results.

This paper presents recent case study data collected by field portable x-ray fluorescence spectrum analysers (FPXRF) as part of grade control activities at three separate (nickel, copper and copper/gold) mining operations. FPXRF has been under utilised for grade control in recent years, largely because the success of early versions of FPXRF was limited to a few metals (eg tin). Efforts to utilise these early versions for other metals was largely unsuccessful and created a perception that FPXRF could not be utilised more broadly within the mining sector and specifically the area of grade control. The structural setting of the analytical function within mining operations has also contributed to the under utilisation of more recent FPXRF instrumentation. The concept of FPXRF as a grade control tool straddles the boundaries of the geology and laboratory departments. As such, this option is often not considered as part of an assessment of grade control procedures for new and existing mining operations. This paper assesses data collected by Australian and New Caledonian miners using FPXRF technology as part of the grade control function and concludes that FPXRF can provide operational and cost benefits to certain mining operations.

Recent regulatory and policy initiatives under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), will have a significant effect in risk reduction requirements for the mining and minerals processing industry. For example, Congress is considering regulating 20 special wastes from the processing of ore and minerals through RCRA Subtitle D and TSCA. The performance of risk analyses and environmental planning at mining projects is often driven by Federal and state regulatory standards. Recent regulatory and policy initiatives by the Environmental Protection Agency under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), will have a significant effect on environmental planning and risk reduction programs for mining and minerals processing. Regulatory programs implemented under other Federal laws including the Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Water Act, and Clean Air Act will also impact industry practices. This paper provides: 1) a brief overview of mining waste and mining waste management, and 2) a description of these regulatory initiatives and a discussion on the impacts of new requirements on environmental and risk reduction programs in the mining industry.

The volume fraction of ß phase was determined in a Ti-6Al-4V alloy by measurements of integrated diffraction intensities. The (0002), and (100)ß diffraction lines were chosen because this combination minimizes the errors resulting from preferred orientation. The difficulties arising from fluorescence radiation were eliminated by use of a diffracted beam monochromator. A specimen quenched from 1475OF (800°C) contained approximately 5 pct ß, but in specimens quenched from higher temperatures no ß was found. The ß phase formed during aging, and in specimens solution treated at 1570oF (855oC) approximately 10 pct ß was present after aging at 1000°F (540°C) for 24 hr. This ß appears to form by decomposition of martensitic a'. ThE kinetics of the reactions which occur during the heat treatment of titanium alloys are complex ' and not completely understood. It has been proposed that hardening occurs in some alloys' on aging by the precipitation of a transition phase w followed by the formation of the stable a and ß phases. It has been proposed for other alloys2 that the a' marten-site decomposes by precipitating finely dispersed a particles. Most investigations have been hampered by the difficulties of determining quantitatively the amounts of the various phases present. This paper is concerned with the measurement of the amount of ß phase by an X-ray method, similar to one developed for the determination of retained austenite. The principal new feature was the use of a mono-chromator in the diffracted beam in order to reduce the fluorescence arising from the sample. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experiments were carried out on an alloy of nominal composition Ti-6Al-4V (actual weight percentages: 6.2 Al, 4.1 V, 0.02 Mn, 0.17 Fe, 0.005 H, 0.03 C, and 0.02 N). The material was received as 5/8-in.-diam centerless ground rods in the annealed condition. The heat treatments were carried out in a vacuum of approximately 0.03µHg. The X-ray intensity measurements were made on 3/8-in. thick discs. The surface was prepared by grinding off about 0.060 in. and electropolishing in a solution af 60 ml (70 to 72 pct) perchloric acid in 1000 ml glacial acetic acid with a current density of 0.5 amp per sq cm.q The X-ray determination is based on the proportionality of the diffracted intensity of each line to the volume fraction of the corresponding phase. In calculating the intensities for a powder sample it is assumed that a large number of grains con- tributes to the diffracted intensity and that the grains are oriented at random. The presence of preferred orientation introduces serious errors in the relative intensities. The material used in this investigation exhibited a strong preferred orientation, which could not be removed by heat treatment. Other investigators have also found that preferred orientation may be retained after phase transformations. Glen and pugh5 performed a detailed analysis of the randomness expected after several allotropic transformations, but stated that this is not observed. Burgers,6 and Burgers and Ploos van Amstel,7 found that, in zirconium, the original orientation is retained after two phase transformations. Newkirk and Geisler8 observed similar behavior in titanium. On the basis of this evidence, it appears that, in the absence of plastic deformation, textures present in annealed titanium alloys are retained. Heating an a-ß alloy to the all-ß region and subsequent cooling to room temperature do not make the orientation of the mar-tensite different from that of the original a phase. In the present investigation it was possible to take advantage of the crystallographic relationships involved in the martensitic transformation to minimize the errors associated with preferred orientation. The relative orientation for titaniu-m marten-site9 takes the form (0001), 11 (110)ß; [1120], 11 [lll]ß. The same relationship has been proposed for zirconium' and certain titanium-base alloys.10-12 Additional sets of approximately parallel planes have been determined for titanium-nickel alloys." The influence of preferred orientation can be minimized by comparing intensities from parallel planes in the two related phases. If it is assumed that each family of planes in a given phase is equally well populated, the effect of preferred orientation can be eliminated by using the normal multiplicity for the family of planes since each set of parallel planes is equally preferred for any orientation of the sample relative to the X-ray beam. INTRODUCTION Surface mining and in situ leaching of uranium have the potential to alter ground-water quality around mines and leach sites. Of particular concern is the fate of uranium and its associated trace elements: molybdenum, arsenic, and selenium. We wish to under- stand the natural processes that control trace element concentrations in ground water and how these processes will influence dispersion of the elements from a mineralized zone, both naturally and during and after mining or restoration. For example, it is commonly recognized that the trace elements are soluble in oxidizing ground water but are insoluble, and can be precipitated, in reducing ground water. Thus oxidizing, metal-bearing water leaving a deposit could re- enter reduced ground, causing the water to be re- reduced and the trace elements to be, reprecipitated. In a sense, this is recreating the original mineralization process. To accomplish the above goals, we have (1) examined the theoretical controls of concentrations based on the available geochemical and thermodynamic data, (2) determined the major ion composition and oxidation-reduction status of Oakville waters because of the influence of these factors on trace element solubility, and (3) determined trace element concentrations and distribution in Oakville ground water. The last approach is used to evaluate how well actual behavior follows predicted behavior. This report focuses on two elements, uranium and molybdenum, because they exemplify the results obtained. The report also is restricted to a regional study of Oakville ground water. Results of more de- tailed study in and around major uranium districts in the Oakville and much of the raw data that support the conclusions in this report are presented in Galloway, Henry and Smith (1980). This report is part of that larger study, which concerned the depositional systems, hydrology, and geochemistry of the Oakville. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency funded the study, under grant numbers R-805357-01 and R-805357-02. Theoretical controls were determined by reviewing the available literature on aqueous chemistry and behavior of uranium and molybdenum. To aid in under- standing water chemistry, Oakville water analyses were run through a modified version of the computer model WATEQF (Plumer, Jones, and Truesdell, 1976). WATEQF calculates speciation of dissolved ions and determines saturation with respect to a variety of minerals. In the discussion below, ion activity products (IAP) are compared with the equilibrium constant (KT) for various reactions and mineral products. Values of log IAP/KT near zero indicate that the water is in equilibrium with a mineral. Values less than -1 indicate considerable undersaturation and values greater than +1 indicate oversaturation. Galloway, Henry, and Smith (1980) give a more complete discussion of the application of this approach to Oakville water chemistry. Eh-pH diagrams have been constructed or adapted from the literature to predict what form -- dissolved ion or stable mineral species -- uranium and molybdenum assume under various conditions. Construction of the diagrams has followed procedures described by Garrels and Christ (1965). This approach is particularly appropriate because the solubility of the elements is Eh-dependent, and Eh varies greatly within the Oakville aquifer. A number of assumptions or approximations are inherent in the use of Eh-pH diagrams and chemical models such as WATEQF and in the interpretation of water chemistry in general. Both Eh-pH diagrams and chemical modeling rely entirely upon available thermo- dynamic data, including free energies of formation and dissociation constants for various reactions. These values are known to varying degrees of accuracy. Most major ions and minerals are relatively well control- led; however, data for trace metals are much poorer. Thermodynamic data are not available for some minerals, and for other minerals, two or more divergent values exist. By necessity, we have relied on the judgment of others to evaluate thermodynamic data. Calculations by WATEQF and constructions of Eh-pH diagrams are based on an assumption of equi1ibrium. Equilibrium may not be comnon in low-temperature aqueous environments; at best, ground-water composi tion may be in a state of dynamic equilibrium, continuously changing due to changes in environmental conditions. Eh-pH diagrams show what phases are stable at equilibrium under given conditions; they do not prove that the phases actually exist. Many minerals persist or form metastably under conditions outside their equilibrium stability field. The kinetics of reactions, which cannot be evaluated here, are important in determining what phases occur. Kinetics may be less of a problem for ground water that travels and evolves slowly through a semihomogeneous matrix than for many other natural systems. Eh-pH diagrams show equilibrium fields only of phases included. They do not indicate anything about stability relative to phases not included in the diagram. WATEQF, obviously, cannot calculate the degree of saturation of a mineral not included in the program or for which the appropriate ions were not analyzed. Thus, a mineral that was not considered may be the most stable phase under a given set of conditions and may control the solubility of a trace element. Exploration activities were maintained at a high level throughout 1966. Numerous significant discoveries and developments in which geologists played an important part were announced. Although the complete results of exploration activities carried out during the year by private companies have not been announced, the following are among the more important developments that have been made public knowledge. In the western states, exploration for practically all of the metals continued at a high rate. Substantially increased interest in uranium occurred this year, and it is felt by many that a real boom in the demand for uranium may come about in the near future. The reasons have been the more rapid acceptance of atomic power than had been anticipated, and that uranium producers can now sell their product to private interests and even foreign countries. A tremendous demand for uranium is anticipated by many, and this has rekindled exploration activity. On the Colorado Plateau, in Wyoming, and in the area around Grants, N. M., a number of companies have undertaken uranium exploration programs, among which are Kerr-McGee, Homestake, Anaconda and Utah Construction. A new uranium orebody in Texas was brought into production early in 1966 by Susquehanna Western.

The copper extraction yield from thermophilic bioleaching of chalcopyrite depends on temperature, pH, and the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), as well as the activity of the microbe used. We studied copper extraction yields obtained from chalcopyrite with three thermophiles, Acidianus brierleyi, Sulfolobus metallicus, and Metallosphaera sedula, under various pH and temperature conditions and with different initial amounts of ferric iron. The results indicated that the capacity of each thermophile strain to leach iron as Fe3+ differed, which affected the influence of pH, temperature, ORP, and microbial activity level on the yield of copper. Microbial activity can cause ORP to be close to the critical value (450 mV) at which copper extraction at 65 °C can be higher than that at 80°C. An initial pH of 1.5 retards the precipitation of jarosite, allowing temperatures as high as 80°C to result in copper extraction yields close to 100%. However, if a thermophile with a poor capacity to form Fe3+ is employed, 100% copper extractions can also be obtained at pH 2.5, because ORP is low as result of low amounts of Fe3+ in solution. Optimum temperatures for the growth of thermophiles did not always mean high copper extraction yields. Conversely, high biomass concentrations depending on the capacity of the thermophile strain to leach iron as Fe3+, can result in excess Fe3+ in solution, leading to the precipitation of large amounts of Fe3+ as jarosite. The bioleaching capacity of A. brierleyi was reduced or suppressed when insufficient initial Fe3+ was pro-vided to trigger the leaching reaction, whereas S. metallicus and M. sedula were less sensitive to the initial availability of Fe3+. This result confirmed that a direct enzymatic attack on the mineral surface could initiate the leaching reaction, but later ORP governed the leaching rate of chalcopyrite.

A generalization of Gy?s model for the fundamental sampling error introduced the new ?parameter for the dependent selection of particles?, denoted as Cij. This allows for modeling deviations from the ideal situation where the selection of a pair of particles is composed of two independent selections. The generalized model potentially leads to more accurate variance estimates in the case of clustering of particles, differences in densities or sizes of the particles or repulsive inter-particle forces. A straightforward and practically applicable method is needed for the determination of this parameter for miscellaneous mixtures in industrial settings. In this contribution, the feasibility of using digital image analysis to determine this parameter Cij, will be demonstrated. Line transect sampling of a digital image was used to construct a transition probability matrix. A new algorithm to derive quantitative estimates for Cij will be presented and discussed. The applicability was verified by a photograph of zirconium silicate particles of sizes typical for industries dealing with pharmaceutical, food/feed, and environmental applications. Conditions affecting the practical applicability are identified and potential pitfalls will be discussed, including e.g. how a potential unrepresentative surface can affect the quality of the estimate of Cij.

Thermal treatments of five different types of non-ferrous metallurgical wastes, under controlled atmosphere, were carried out at temperatures lower than 800 °C. The aim of these treatments was to reduce the toxic elements content and to increase that of valuable metals in the residue. <Best results were obtained by their treatments in air or hydrogen or successively both of them. Simple treatments using air or hydrogen of three samples allowed the elimination of more than? 95 % of their toxic elements and&apos; almost doubled their valuable metals&apos; concentration. For the rest two samples, combined treatment was necessary for their efficient decontamination and the concentration of valuable metals, in the treatments residue, to a reasonable value. Most of the solids issued from these treatments can be recycled in .the current non-ferrous metallurgical processes.

The purpose of this article is to describe briefly the operation of a 6-ton blast furnace on a charge of bauxite, limestone, iron ore, and cast-iron turnings and to point out the bearing which smelting such a charge has upon the production of alumina cement. One object of the experiment, conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Aluminum Co. of America, was to determine whether tae so-called Pedersen process3 can be applied to the blast furnace. This process consists of smelting a charge of bauxite, iron ore, and. limestone, and results in to products. One is a slag containing about 50 per cent of A1203 and is intended for use in manufacturing aluminum, and the other is iron low in sulphur. Complete details of the test are published in other reports4. Blast-furnace slag is now recognized as a satisfactory and economical raw material for making Portland cement, Wm. A. Forbes5 has recently reported that in 1926 an important steel interest used well over 1 million tons of slag in producing about 24 million long, tons of cement. This is equivalent to about ½ ton of slag for each ton of cement. Alumina cement can be made direct in the blast furnace. Its physical character would have to be changed by grinding, but no change in its chemical composition would be necessary.

"A novel carbonaceous adsorbent for recovery of nickel from nickel plating waste solution was prepared from rice straw using sulfur impregnation. The rice straws were cut to 1 cm pieces, and then immersed in 0.01 - 3 M K2S solution to prepare sulfur-immersed materials. The immersed-materials were heated at 100-700 ºC in nitrogen gas to produce the sulfur-impregnated carbonaceous adsorbent by pyrolysis. The contents of carbon and sulfur in the adsorbent and abilities of adsorbent to recovery nickel from aqueous solution were examined. The contents of carbon and sulfur in sulfur-immersed materials are almost same as those in raw material. In pyrolysis, with increasing the heating temperature to 200 ºC, the contents of carbon and sulfur are almost constant, and then above 300 ºC those increase. The recovery for nickel using raw material, sulfur-immersed material and the product pyrolyzed at 100 - 200 ºC are almost same, and with increasing the heating temperature to 400 ºC, that of the product increases, and above 500 ºC that of the product decreases. In immerse step, with increasing K2S concentration, the carbon content of the product at 400 ºC gradually decreases, the sulfur content of the product increases, and the recovery for nickel using the product gradually increases and then above 1 M K2S decrease. The product prepared from material immersed in 1 M K2S solution at 400 ºC indicates a maximum recovery for nickel ion. The product can adsorb nickel ion in nickel plating waste solution coexisting with phosphate ion, and adsorbed nickel ion in the product was deposited as nickel metal after heating at 1000 ºC under N2 atmosphere.INTRODUCTIONRice is the second world’s largest cereal crop after wheat, but produces large amount of straw residues, of about 330 million metric tonnes. Rice is a widely grown crop in Asia, and rice straw is produced as a by-product of rice production. In most parts of rice fields, open-field burning of rice straw is commonly practiced in the region when there is limited time to prepare a field for the next crop. However, open-field burning of crop residues is an uncontrolled combustion process during which air pollutants are emitted into atmosphere. These air pollutants have significant toxicological properties and are potential carcinogens (Gadede et al., 2009). Although wildfires are prohibited in cultivation fields of most countries, farmers usually keep on burning their crop by-products. Biomass burning is an important source of aerosol particles which may affect local and regional air quality (Gao et al., 2011), and also contribute to global climate changes."

An estimated capital investment of $76,499,800 will be required for a plant designed and built to produce 90 million standard cubic feet per day (std.c.f.d.) of synthetic pipeline gas through Lurgi gasification of bituminous char. This investment figure does not include the pretreatment plant, the cost of which is assumed to be reflected in the cost of the char fed to the gasification system. Shift conversion, C02 removal, and methanation are required after gasification in the Lurgi unit to make a gas suitable for pipeline transmission. The Izmit Bay bridge, a 3-km-long suspension bridge crossing of Izmit Bay, Turkey is planned to be constructed in one of the most seismically active places in the world. The site, which has the potential to experience significant earthquakes associated with the relative motion accommodated on the North Anatolian Fault, is underlain by deep deposits of soft soils, and areas of unstable and liquefiable soils. Characterizing the seismotectonic setting, foundation soil conditions, potential fault locations, as well as other geohazards was a critical component for the project concessionaire to finance the project and obtain meaningful bids for bridge design and construction. Given the Build Operate Transfer (BOT) funding mechanism, executing this work in the least possible time was critical to the concessionaire?s financing scheme. Fugro was retained to provide geotechnical, geological, and seismological evaluations for the project region, and to generate data for contractors to develop reliable designs and bids. The uncertainties in these data made it difficult for the BOT concessionaire to finance the project and tender Bridge design and construction. The investment in an early and comprehensive site characterization program to evaluate and quantify those uncertainties allowed the concessionaire to save schedule, provide a robust bid basis to bridge contractors, and persuade banks to finance what was perceived to be a relatively high risk project.
