This report describes the development and underground operation of a semi-automatic, raise climber, Man and Supply Hoist System designed for stope access in underground metal and nonmetal mines. Demonstrated capabilities of the system include a 4000-lb payload capacity, control from the traveling cage and from up to five remote stations, operating in vertical or inclined raises 5 ft in diameter and up to 300 ft in length and a travel speed of 50 ft/min. The 'system has the capability of operating in crooked raises because the conveyance climbs two stationary wire ropes suspended down the raise. The drive unit is electrically powered with power and control signals supplied to the drive unit through an armored cable also suspended down the raise. The system has been designed for portability, ease of installation and minimum raise development. The system can be installed by two men in five shifts. The hoist has been demonstrated successfully in two underground applications. The first demonstration was in a 5-ft diam, 60 deg inclined raise over a 2-month period. The second demonstration utilized a vertical 5-ft diam borehole to access a blast-hole stoping area. The system successfully provided two shift-a-day service over a 7-month duration demonstration. This report provides a detailed description of the hoist design and its demonstrated performance in two mine applications.

This is one of a series of papers being published by the Federal Bureau of Mines for the dissemination of information on methods and practices used in the mining and preparation of crushed stone for market requirements. Performance in terms of units of work or tons produced per machine and per operator man-hour are given whenever that information is available. Direct operating costs are useful for comparing different methods, and are, therefore, included if possible. In addition to the factual description of equipment and methods used, it is desirable to discuss the engineering reasons for the choices that have been made. This paper is particularly concerned with the opertions at the Columbia plant of Palmetto Quarries Co. of Columbia, S.C. The plant is about one-half mile east of the Congaree River and adjacent to the southwest corner of the city of Columbia. Rail access is by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, and by a spur strack of the Seaboard Airline Railroad.

The electrode in a slag-resistance electric furnace is the central factor in the design and operation of the furnace by its role of conveying the smelting power, i.e. heat needed for the operation. The control parameters are the size and positioning in the slag bath which are defined by slag resistivity, furnace resistance, cell constant and power input sequence all of which are closely interrelated. The flow of heat generated by the electrode current determines the energy distributions and thus the furnace dimensions. Heat flow models concerning vertical, horizontal and combined two-dimensional flows are discussed. All these considerations are based on the experimentally determined slag properties such as its resistivity.

Polarization phenomena associated with the use of an agitated bed of particles as an electrode for metal deposition were studied. The concentration polarization at this type of electrode is much smaller than that occurring at a fixed or moving electrode surface. Agitated particle electrodes can be used to electro-reduce copper from solutions over a wide range of concentration and at cur·rent densities up to 2000 AIsq. ft. of bed cross section.

Salinity in Effluents carries a high penalty as a result of toxic­ity, corrosion, limited re-use potential, scaling and environmental impact. Although the high TDS, such as Calcium sulfate, other than metals are still being dealt with a low key non issue basis, they are receiving more and more attention from regulators. Traditional solutions to solve these problems are costly and inefficient and create therefore severe constraints on the prof­itability of mining operations and out-price in general the finan­cial resources for environmental clean up operations. Going up the technology versus cost curve the most econom­ic solution to pollution is dilution but which is difficult in a coun­t1y shoti of water. If this can't be done, the second best, at least in sunny areas, is, to pump the whole effluent on a tailings dam for evaporation. Depending on the contaminants, one may have to pond the efflu­ent to avoid re-dissolution and seepage into the ground. The next most common solution to pollution is the addition of lime to remove and concentrate any dissolved metals and then dump the product, hidden in a mass of gypsum in a convenient place. Again ponding may be required to avoid ground pollution. However the treatment costs start to rise steeply if it is not allowed to discharge the limed overflow solution because of its high calcium sulphate content. Further treatment is then required in the form of high cost and high tech membrane process tech­nology such as reverse osmosis or dialysis or even mechanical driven evaporation.

This paper is a description of the opera-tion and results of a Humphreys Spiral Silt Cleaning Plant at the Powderly Colliery 01 The Hudson Coal Co. during the first nine months of operation and follows a preliminary description given at the .Institute cite Institute in May, 1947, in a paper titled "Preparation of Anthracite Silt for Boiler Fuel in a Humphreys Spiral Test Plant" by H. H. Otto, V. H. Wilson and W. L. Dennen. This plant is considered a full size op-erating test plant and, like all new plants, numerous minor changes in the methods of operation have been made from time to time to secure the results desired. Views of the silt preparation plant and of the screening house are given in Fig I and 2. This plant consists of 48 spirals in 8 batteries of 6 spirals each, 36 of which were to be operated as primary spirals and the remaining 12 as secondary spirals. A brief description of the plant and its operation follows. The only material cleaned at the plant during 1947 was that carried in the underflow from the Thickener which han-dles the Breaker waste water. This under-flow, amounting to approximately 2000 gpm of water and containing 12.6 pct of solids, is pumped to vibrating screens where the plus 3/16-in. material is removed. (Fig 3). This oversize material drops into a pocket from which it is trucked to the run-of-mine tipple for re-preparation.

The increasing demand for pure aluminum and aluminum compounds of industrial quality from kaolinite ore cannot be overemphasized. Nigeria is one of the African countries endowed with abundant solid mineral resources that have not been sufficiently exploited to assist its indigenous industries. A wide array of applications of pure aluminum and its compounds are available, such as paper filling, refractories, adsorbent, catalysis, and paint additives. In this study, the upgrading of a Nigerian biotite-rich kaolinite ore by a hydrometallurgical route was investigated in oxalic acid media. During leaching studies, the effects of parameters including reaction temperature, lixiviant concentration and particle size on the extent of ore dissolution were examined. At optimal conditions (1.0 mol/L C2H2O4, 75 °C), 92.0% of the initial 10 g/L ore was reacted within 120 min. The dissolution curves from the shrinking core model were analyzed and found to conform to the assumption of surface diffusion reaction, and the calculated activation energy of 33.2 kJ/mol supported the proposed model. The unreacted product (~8.0%) analyzed by XRD was found to contain siliceous impurities and could serve as a valuable by-product for certain industries.

This paper describes a technique which permits visual observation of oil displacement processes througlrout the interior of a porous structure as thick as 2 in. A model having glass walls is filled with finely powdered glass. Such a model becomes completely transparent if the powdered glass pack is saturated with an oil having the same refractive index as the glass. When water or gar, with a refractive index different from that of the oil (glass) is injected, the model becomes opaque in the space occupied by the water (gar). visual observation and photography of these displacement processes are thus rendered possible. The following processes have been studied: (I) displacement of oil by water (linear drive) in a homo-geneous formation and in a stratified formation, (2) water flooding (five-spot well pattern), (3) solution gas-drive process, and (4) oil-bank formation. INTRODUCTION Most of the scaled model experiments heretofore carried out in the Koninklijke/Shell Laboratorium, Amsterdam, have been done in steel containers, in which oil-saturated sand packs represented the oil-bearing formation. In such experiments, for instance those on the displacement of oil by water, the cumulative oil production was measured as a function of the cumulative water injection. In order to interpret the measured production data, a need has for some time been felt for a means of observing visually what happens in the course of such experiments. Some information of this kind was obtained earlier by observing the water-oil distribution in various cross sections of the sand after the conclusion of the experiment.' However, the technique used did not guarantee that the fluid distribution remained undisturbed. Moreover, the procedure was somewhat elaborate and the information obtained limited. Therefore a new technique has been developed, which is described below. DESCRIPTION OF EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE AND APPARATUS Glass models simulating part of an oil reservoir are filled with ground Pyrex glass of a specific grain size, representing the porous structure of the prototype. Before an experiment is started, the porous formation has to be saturated completely with an oil having exactly the same refractive index as the Pyrex glass powder. All light-scattering surfaces of the glass grains become invisible and the formation is then transparent. If the oil is displaced by another fluid (e.g. by water in a water-drive experiment, or by gas liberated from the oil in a solution gas-drive experiment) the formation becomes opaque in the region where the oil is expelled from the rock.* The back of the apparatus is painted black and illumination is from the front; therefore, in the photographs of the experiments, the oil-bearing formation appears black, whereas the water- or gas-invaded areas are white.

"The South African Mineral Resource Committee (SAMREC), a Working Group of the SAMREC/SAMVAL Committee (SSC), under the joint auspices of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) and the Geological Society of South Africa (GSSA) developed the SAMREC Code. The Code sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting of exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves in South Africa. It is applicable to the reporting of all styles of solid mineralization or economic deposit. However, certain commodities, namely coal and diamonds, have specific additional reporting requirements. The Code does not apply to oil, gas or water."

A new and unique logging tool, called the Borehole Televiewer (BHTV), has been developed to inspect boreholes and to evaluate formations. Even though geologists and engineers have had only about 3 years' experience with the BHTV, the thinking of many of them has been radically influenced by the fascinating and revealing "log-picture" recorded with the tool. The BHTV fills a need for a logging tool that can produce a direct and descriptive record of the physical properties of the borehole environment. Although primarily developed to evaluate fractured reservoirs, the BHTV has been used successfully to solve a variety of problems related to formation evaluation and borehole inspection. Geologists and petroleum engineers have been confounded for many years by the problems of locating and evaluating fractures. Interpretation of the usual resistivity, acoustic or radioactivity logs, as well as the analysis of cores, for evaluation of fractured reservoirs is extremely difficult and often not definitive. This is understandable since analysis of cores from fractured formations has reported variously: (a) low porosity, (b) no effective permeability, (c) lack of any matrix oil saturation and (d) oil stains on fracture planes as the only indications of potential production.14 In recent years acoustic amplitude logs have been introduced and used with varying degrees of success to locate fractures.8'9'11"13 Conventional amplitude logs at best give only qualitative answers where quantitative ones are desired. The logs reveal nothing of the orientation of the fractures. In addition to these logs, various types of cameras, television, and rubber impression packers have been used for borehole inspection. (See Appendix.) The BHTV logging tool supplies both the quantitative and the orientation answers about fractures. The borehole can be filled with any homogeneous, gas-free liquid such as fresh water, saturated brine, crude oil or drilling muds. This tool takes an "acoustic picture" of the borehole wall. The resulting log is a representation of the borehole wall as if it were split vertically and laid flat. The log is oriented with respect to magnetic north. Any physical changes in the borehole wall are seen as changes in picture intensity. In this way, fractures, deformation or pits are reflected on the log. Tool Description The fundamental parts of the BHTV are shown in Fig. 1. A piezoelectric transducer probes the borehole wall with bursts of acoustic energy. A flux-gate magnetometer senses the earth's magnetic field and provides the means for determining the orientation of the log. A motor rotates the transducer and mag-

"Gondwana coal deposits are widespread and are known to occur in four continents. They are present in Brazil, India, South Africa, and Australia. From coal petrographic examinations and a detailed literature survey, it is interpreted that Gondwana coals are present also in Canada and the United States. Laurasia, or Northern Hemisphere, coals occur in the United States, Canada, and Europe. They form the main coal producing fields of the world. Megascopically, Gondwana coals have a uniform, micro-banded appearance, with a dull lustre; Laurasian coals are bright and have distinct bands of vitrain and clarain. Petrographically, Gondwana coals, compared to Laurasian coals, are lower in vitrinite, but higher in inertinite, particularly in semifusinite. Mineral matter averages 16% in Gondwana coals and 5.7% in Northern Hemisphere coals.Gondwana coals are characterized by thick seams that terminate through lithification (Versteinerung), whereby coal passes laterally into shale. Laurasian coal seams are thinner and terminate by splitting and digitation.Vitrinite/inertinite ratio data indicate deposition of the Gondwana coals in dry marshes under strong oxidizing conditions. The Laurasian coals originated in wet marshes in a reducing environment. As deduced from fossil plants and fossil spores, temperate and near arctic conditions apply for the Gondwana coals. A tropical and subtropical climate is indicated for the Laurasian deposits. The Gondwana coals were formed under allochthonous conditions. They derived from vegetation that drifted into the peat bogs. The Laurasian coals are autochthonous and originated from vegetation that grew and was buried in the peat bogs. The Gondwana coals are Late Carboniferous and Early Permian. The Laurasian coals are entirely Late Carboniferous."

The paper relates to the laboratory and pilot plant studies that have been carried out by Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd., Metallurgical Research Div., in developing the ammonia pressure leach process for extracting copper, nickel, cobalt, and sulphur from high grade nickel concentrate produced from Lynn Lake ores, and describes in some detail the chemistry of the process. IT is well known'.' 2 that copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, ferrous iron, and a number of other metals combine with ammonia in aqueous solution to form complex ions of the form [Me(NH,)x]"+. The stability and solubility of these ions depend on the concentration of the metal ion in solution, on the amount of NH, present, and on the amount and type of anions present, e.g., OH-, C0;-, NO,, C1-, SO;-. If ammonia is partially or completely removed from such solutions, for example by boiling, the soluble ammines tend to decompose and the metals precipitate as basic salts. These properties of metal ammines have found practical application in the commercial recovery of copper, nickel, and cobalt from a variety of ores. In an operation formerly conducted at Kennecott"" the mill tailing containing 0.80 pct Cu as copper carbonate was leached by percolation with an ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution to dissolve the copper as the ammine. At Calumet and Hecla0-" With a mill tailing containing about 0.4 pct Cu as metallic copper, it has been found necessary to aerate the ammonia-ammonium carbonate leach solutions between stages to oxidize the solubilized copper. At Nicarol"-" where nickel and cobalt occur as oxides and silicates which are not soluble in ammonia, the ore is heated to decompose silicates and to selectively reduce the nickel and cobalt to metal, leaving the iron as Fe,O,, and is then leached with ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution accompanied by aeration to dissolve nickel and cobalt as ammines. In each of these leaching operations, the anion present is CO, and the metals can be precipitated from the leach solution as oxide (copper) or hydroxide and carbonate (nickel and cobalt) by boil- ing off NH, and C02 both of which are recycled to treat a subsequent ore charge. The products-—oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate—can be treated by conventional smelting, calcining, or electrolytic methods to convert them to refined metals. Thus the procedures mentioned utilize the properties of the ammines to extract copper, nickel, and cobalt from nonsulphide ores and separate them from the leach solutions. These processes have the advantage that they can be carried out in closed vessels at atmospheric pressure, that the leaching solutions are specific for the desired metals, that the metals can be recovered as relatively pure compounds by the boiling operation, and that the NH, and CO, can be recycled. Also, as the leach solutions after boiling and filtration are substantially free of metals, NH,, and CO,, they can be discarded, thus facilitating the control of the water balance in the leaching circuit. When, as is the case with Sherritt Gordon concentrates, sulphides are treated with ammonia solution in the presence of oxygen, the leach solution contains SO,--, and an entirely different set of conditions is encountered. The ammine sulphates (of nickel, for example) are more soluble than the carbonates and can be only partially decomposed by boiling. The SO, and NH, in the solutions can not be recovered by boiling. Thus, despite the more favorable leaching conditions resulting from high solubility of the ammine sulphates, the recovery of metals, NH,, and SO, from the solutions must be effected by other means. Sherritt Gordon Nickel Concentrate Treatment The Ni-Cu-Co flotation concentrate produced at Lynn Lake'" contains 12 to 16 pct Ni, 1 to 2 pct Cu, 0.2 to 0.5 pct Co, 33 to 40 pct Fe, 28 to 34 pct S, 8 to 20 pct insoluble, and less than 0.02 oz per ton precious metals. The nickel is present chiefly as pentlandite, the copper as chalcopyrite, and the iron as pyrrhotite and pyrite. Most of the cobalt is thought to be present in pentlandite, although it is known that a small amount occurs as Co-Ni-pyrite.

The development of a new gar lift valve has removed many of the obstacles limiting over-all gas lift efficiency. The valve is pressure charged in place in a well, and operating pressure can be changed without pulling. Temperature and gas gradient compensation have been eliminated. Intermitting and constant flow installations, using conventional pressure-charged valves, are compared with designs incorporating the new automatic stabilizer controlled valve. Specific well performance data are presented. The means of obtaining and controlling multiple-point injection of gas are explained and contrasted with single point injection. The effect on small diameter strings and multiple string installations is discussed. The effect of flowing temperature gradient on a design using conventional pressure-charged valves, the limitations imposed by such temperature, and the obvious benefits which result from the use of automatic stabilizer controlled valves are shown. Reduction of gas requirements is stated mathematically and demonstrated with specific examples which are identified as to oil company and well. Increased fluid recovery resulting from greater drawdown is illustrated. The economic advantages are mentioned with emphasis on reduction of capital expenditures, as well as reduction in operating expenses. INTRODUCTION Much of the engineering and research work performed with gas lift has been based upon the supposition that under producing conditions gas would be injected at a single point in a well. Many tests were performed in determining the optimum size of the opening through which gas would be passed and the exact placement of the valve equipment. The objectives in a gas lift installation are to unload the well and to efficiently produce the well after it is unloaded. Until recently, the function of upper valves was simply to unload the well. An operating valve located at a proper place in a well served as a single injection point for lifting liquid to the surface. The basic problem in using such equipment is to arrive at operating depth with sufficient operating pressure to efficiently lift the liquid. Few gas lift installations are designed with all required well data available. However, regardless of the quality and availability of data, and regardless of the accuracy of the design, there is the practical problem of preparing and placing gas lift equipment in the well in exact accordance with the plans and intentions of the engineer. In recognition of these and many other problems, attention was directed toward a means of removing the need for temperature and gas gradient compensation, a way to change the gas lift installation to meet the changing requirements of the well itself, and a manner of compensating for changes in oil-water content, fluid volumes, PI, and bottom-hole pressure resulting from flood or repres-suring activity. A device which could actually set and change the operating pressure of gas lift valves in the well would meet most of these needs. There now exists a new gas lift valve which fulfills the original objectives and in so doing actually accomplishes much more. With this device, called an Automatic Stabilizer Controlled valve, there is an exact matching of valve operating pressure and well conditions. Gas is injected at more than one point in the well, thereby making controlled multiple-point injection of gas a reality. Installation calculations are materially simplified and the need for basic temperature and gas gradient data no longer exists. Section I—The Automatic Stabilizer Controlled Valve The operation of the ASC valve is more easily understood by first studying a conventional pressure-charged valve and then inserting the stabilizer element to observe the changes which result. Fig. 1 is a schematic of a conventional precharged pressure-operated valve. The pressure in the dome pd, acts downward, against the area of the bellows A,, to hold the valve closed. The resulting force Bf plus the spring effect of the bellows Sf represents the total force acting to close the valve. Correspondingly, the tubing pressure ptbg works upward against the port area Atbg and the casing pressure pc works upward against a portion of the area of the bellows

A back- reflection precession-type X-yay camera for determining the crystallographic orientation of the crystallites of both phases in small areas of thick specimens of polyphase alloys is described ad the geometry, advantages, and limitations of the apparatus are discussed. Metallographic obseg-vations of interfacial angles (or habit planes or growth direction are made on the same specimen so that the crystallographic and metallographzc orientation data call be directly correlated. An example of the application of tile technique to a unidi-~~ectionally solidified CuA12-A1 eutectic specimen is presented. The interfacial planes ad growth directions of each phase were established, and the orientation relationship between the phases was observed and found to be approximately intermediate between two previously reported relationships. The crystallographic interfacial relationship between two solid phases is an important parameter in a variety of metallurgical phenomena because of the energy associated with the interface and because this energy is at least partly associated with the way in which the two space lattices are in contact along the interface. In order to describe the interfacial planes in the crystallites of both phases it is necessary to determine the crystallographic orientation of each phase in a specimen relative to each other, and to directly correlate these data with met-allographic measurements from which the interfacial planes can be determined on the same specimen. The back-reflection Laue technique is the easiest way to determine the orientation of thick single crystals or large grains and the method can be combined with metallographic techniques to provide the necessary data, provided the reflections from each phase can be distinguished from one another. However, if the crystallites are small or of varying orientation or if one or both phases has a unit cell with less than the maximum symmetry, many overlapping and complex Laue patterns are recorded simultaneously and it becomes impractical if not impossible to interpret the photographs. All of these complexities were present in a unidirectionally so- lidified A1-CuA12 eutectic alloy1 for which a crystallographic analysis was desired. Consequently the method described here was developed since no known X-ray or electron diffraction technique had all of the following attributes which were required. 1) Method should yield data from which the crys-tallographic orientation of every crystallite or diffracting unit in the irradiated area can be determined. 2) Method should be adaptable to the study of small areas. Depending upon the degree of preferred orientation in the specimens, it should be possible to obtain reliable data in a reasonable length of time on irradiated areas as small as 1.0 or even 0.1 mm in diam. 3) Method should permit direct correlation of crystallographic data with microscopic orientation data pertaining to crystallite axes, habit, morphology, and growth directions as determined by optical microscopy. 4) method should be such that selected areas of large specimens can be easily studied. Trepanning of a small specimen (such as an electron microscope specimen) from larger specimens was undesirable since it would greatly increase the problem of correlating the crystallographic and microscopic directional data. Requirements 3 and 4 dictated that an X-ray back-reflection pinhole technique should be used on large samples, such as metallographic specimens which had previously been examined and analyzed for their microscopic characteristics. Similarly, requirement 2 could be satisfied by choosing a collimator of appropriately small diameter. Exposure times would not be excessive provided the detector were close enough to the specimen. Because of space limitations film was chosen in preference to a Geiger counter. Requirement 1 was fulfilled by using monochromatic radiation and providing enough additional degrees of freedom in specimen rotation to compensate for Bragg law restrictions on diffracted beams. DESCRIPTION OF APPARATUS The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 consists of a pin-hole collimator, (a), projecting through a rotatable circular film in a holder, (b), which records X-ray reflections in the back-reflection region. "High speed compressible jets are used in a number of steel-making applications. In the case of the BOF, a compressible oxygen jet reacts with a carbon-rich iron bath to reduce carbon levels and produce steel. The intensity of the process is governed by the speed of the jet and by the size and shape of the depression created in the metal and slag by the force of the jet, i.e. by the corresponding free surface. This is a difficult CFD problem, since there are compressible and incompressible regions in the flow domain, which need to be handled differently in a finite-volume (FV) pressure-correction scheme. Also, standard turbulence models do not account for compressibility, or the large difference in density between the cold oxygen jet and the hot reacting surroundings. Corrections are introduced to the k-E model to remedy this deficiency and the results are validated against experimental data. The compressible/incompressible boundary is handled through a transition region, based on Mach number.IntroductionThe deformation of a free surface by a compressible high speed jet is of paramount engineering interest, particularly for understanding the physical processes within a Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF). In a BOF, a supersonic oxygen jet impinges on a molten iron surface, thereby creating a cavity. Oxygen penetrates the bath and removes carbon, resulting in low carbon steel [1].The challenges in modelling such a process lie in coupling a solution domain with distinct compressible and incompressible regions and in dealing with large density differences between the modelled gas and liquid. The modelling of compressibility within the jet is crucial, since the correct velocity profile in the jet is required to determine the cavity depth with accuracy."

In this paper, the interaction mechanism of these flotation reagents with the copper atom on chalcopyrite has been systematically investigated by first principle DFT (density functional theory) calculations. Thirty-four specific common functional groups linked with the same hydrocarbon chain (ethyl) are optimized at a B3LYP/def2-TZVP level, the solvation effect was included with the SMD solvation model. The analysis of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and nature bond orbital (NBO) charge of these reagents reveals their potential applications to other types of copper-bearing mineral. Further investigation of the thermodynamics calculations gives more reliable data to screen collectors or inhibitors for copper-bearing mineral. The flotation results from carefully reviewed literatures are in good agreement with the calculation results. This work might also shed new light on the development and discovery of highly efficient and selective flotation reagents with low cost based on the computational methods.INTRODUCTION Froth flotation,(Shean & Cilliers, 2011) a mineral processing approach, is applied to efficiently enrich valuable minerals from the mixture, which is achieved according to the dictinctive surface properties of minerals. In the past century, researchers have develped an aboundant of flotation reagents by extraction or synthetize, and many carefully selected reagents might die in the bench tests or the pilot tests before the pratice.(Bulatovic & SrdjanM, 2007) Generally, it involves a lot of cost and tedious works by conducting flotation tests to screen flotation reagents. Flotation reagents have been boomed robustly with the developing of the organic synthesis.(Liu, Yang, & Zhong, 2017) Reseachers found the specific properties of a reagent are determined by its functional groups and the length of the hydrocarbon, where the functional group is assigned as the adsorption site to adsorb onto mineral surfaces and the hydrocarbon chain is called as a hydrophobic group."

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 16,927-acre Pryor Mountain Wilderness Study Area (MT-067-206), part of the 3,955-acre Burnt Timber Canyon Wilderness Study Area (MT-067-205), and part of the 4,550-acre Big Horn Tack-On Wilderness Study Area (MT-067-207) to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The Burnt Timber and Big Horn Tack-On study areas contain 3,430 and 2,550 acres, respectively. The three areas are in Carbon County, MT, and Big Horn County, WY, about 13 miles north of Lovell, WY. No identified resources exist in any of the study areas. Bureau of Mines personnel reviewed literature, searched county mining records and examined prospects, claims, and mineralized areas to determine whether identified mineral resources existed. The three study areas are within the Pryor Mountain unorganized mining district. U.S. Department of Energy production records indicate there were 223,000 pounds of uranium oxide (U308) and 236,000 pounds of vanadium pentoxide (V205) produced from 19 properties within the mining district. The average ore grade was 0.36 percent [3,600 ppm (parts per million)] U308 and 0.416 percent (4,160 ppm) V20S. Only the Pryor Mountain study area has current claims, the 50 claims of the S0S group.

Crosshole Sonic Logging (CSL) of drilled shafts requires 1.5-in (38-mm) or 2-in (51-mm) I.D. sonic access tubes to be installed inside the steel reinforcement cage. The sonic access tubes do not contribute to the structural capacity of the drilled shaft. The proposed use of Ischebeck TITAN T73/56 CSL/Hollow Threaded Rebar for Cross Hole Sonic Logging Access Tubes Combined with Longitudinal Concrete Reinforcing in Drilled Shafts (patent pending) is discussed as an alternative method of construction and CSL probe access. The T73/56 hollow threaded rebar/sonic access tube performs as a high strength rebar while at the same time creating a 2.2-in (56-mm) I.D. sonic access tube. The deformed high strength hollow bar provides better adhesion to concrete thus reducing the problem of debonding associated with smooth PVC and steel pipe. A cost comparison using conventional rebar with added sonic access tubes is discussed. The use of T73/56 CSL/Hollow Threaded Rebar as a value engineering alternative can reduce both material and labor costs for drilled shaft construction and can provide an advantage where anchor bolt cages and longitudinal reinforcing create congestion.

One area of study in the Coal Mine Injury Analysis project was to illustrate and enhance the ability o mine safety management personnel to apply analytical techniques to Injury experience data and to justify requests for funds for safety enhancement actions on a cost/benefit and other quantitative basis. Four volumes of this final project report detail (1) the objectives and scope of the mine safety management research, (2) the results of literature review, and case studies, and (3) models developed for mine safety management. The four volumes are titled as Volume III: Mine Safety Management, Volume IV: Analytical Techniques for Mine Safety Management; Volume V: Mine Safety Management Case Studies and Volume IX: Training Cost Model. In this volume, the application of the quantitative procedures to mine-specific accident/injury experience data is discussed in detail in the form of case studies. The accident data from three mines are analyzed, and recommendations for training are proposed for each of the mines on the basis of this analysis. The procedures to apply cost-benefit analyses are described along with the cost benefit ratios for the training program/policies for the mines.

The results of using a simple analytical solution and a relatively complex numerical model to estimate ground-water inflow to an open pit mine are compared. The analytical solution assumes lateral, radial flow to a fully penetrating pit in an idealized confined aquifer, whereas the numerical model simulates fully three-dimensional flow to a partially penetrating pit from a water table aquifer. The latter is obviously a more realistic simulation of the problem, but the former method is significantly easier to use, Comparison of the results obtained with the two methods for some typical hydrogeologic conditions encountered in mining yields ratios between them in the range of 0.15 to 0.60. These values can be used as a coefficient in the Pit Flow analytical solution to produce reasonable estimates of in-flow even when there are significant differences from the idealized conditions implicit in its application.
