"Mill feed materials that are not run-of-mine ore are often a challenge for mineral processors and tend to accumulate in stockpiles, where they remain unprocessed for many years and become “slow moving inventories”. During a complete re-evaluation of the Clarabelle Mill operation (38,000 ton/day capacity) in 2000, it was concluded that there was an opportunity to assemble a 5,000 ton/day custom circuit to treat such stockpiles in the equipment that remained available during regularly scheduled maintenance shut-downs.This project was part of the larger Mill Redesign Project and involved testing the intended flowsheet under a number of operating scenarios for the first material to be treated: spent refractory bricks. The laboratory focus was on how to maximize returns using the available equipment and reagents.The circuit was successfully commissioned in the fall of 2000. As the brick stockpile was depleted, other potential feeds were evaluated at the laboratory, as well as in the new custom circuit itself. Processing of the spent refractory brick has yielded a significant contribution to the profitability of INCO. Significant opportunities lie ahead for generating more value from other slow moving inventories.INTRODUCTIONIntegrated mining operations tend to have slow moving inventories along the path from the mines to the finished products. Spent refractory bricks from furnaces and converters and furnace bottoms are materials that often end up in long-tern stockpiles. Such stockpiles are a challenge, although they represent small tonnages on an annual basis, because they are unique materials, which cannot be readily brought into the process at a rate anywhere near that at which they are produced, due to the high contents of deleterious components such as chromite or magnesia. Accumulation over years will eventually yield a metal inventory worthy of consideration given the right opportunity, such as availability of spare equipment or peak metal prices."

Gas management practices across the Australian underground coal industry have evolved significantly since the early nineties with the introduction of hazard management plans, directional drilling techniques, surface gas predrainage methods, and the widespread use of ventilation and gas reservoir simulation software.The improvements are evidenced by a substantial reduction in the occurrence of outbursts and gas related delays during a period where coal production rates have increased three to four fold. The development of effective gas predrainage strategies have been afforded by the use of reservoir simulators and a significant increase in the availability of measured gas reservoir data, in particular gas content and composition, adsorption isotherms and permeability. That said significant opportunities remain to optimise gas drainage designs and increase certainty in the gas predrainage design process through an enhanced understanding of coal seam permeability and how it is applied in the gas drainage design process.This paper describes the discrepancies between measured and actual seam permeability found during the recent assessment of two pilot predrainage programs executed in the coal measures of Queensland’s Bowen Basin. The results of those programs illustrate the need to better understand the validity of measured permeability data. The history match method employed in the pilot well assessments is proposed as an integral step in the routine gas drainage design processes that will ultimately lead to increased certainty and flexibility in gas predrainage practices.CITATION:Blanch, M, 2017. "Abrasive wear and corrosive wear of carbon-steel grinding balls occurred simultaneously during the wet-grinding of hematite iron ore, and Ni-Cu sulphide ore, in laboratory ball mills. Two corrosion control methods, the use of corrosion inhibitors and pH control, were investigated and found to be effective means of reducing or preventing corrosive wear. Up to 50 % reduction of total ball wear resulted from the use of these methods.Corrosive wear is caused principally by the reaction of oxygen in air with the carbon-steel grinding balls, probably by the following reaction: 2Fe + O2 + 2H20 - 2Fe2 + 40H-.IntroductionA survey of corrosion problems in Canadian sulphide ore mines was completed and the findings were published in 197l(l). The corrosion survey was used to develop the present research program with the objective to find more economical and effective ways and means to reduce the corrosion that occurs in the mining and metallurgical industry. The purpose of this presentation is to review the projects being done by staff members of the Corrosion Section, Extraction Metallurgy Division, on corrosive wear and its control in wet-grind ball mills.Both abrasion and corrosion contribute to metal consumption during wet grinding of ores. The total wear of grinding media in this study is assumed to be equal to the sum of corrosive wear and abrasive wear. A great deal of research and development has been reported in the literature on ways to improve the abrasion resistance of grinding media but only a small number of studies has been reported on the corrosion resistance of conventional grinding media."

The Bureau of Mines surveyed unit trainloading and storage installations in the midwestern, eastern, and southeastern coalfields. Nine individual operations were studied in detail as a representative cross section of unit train operations in these areas. Of the nine operations studied, three were in Illinois, two in Kentucky, and one each in West Virginia, Tennessee, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Information was obtained from coal producers, coal sale agencies, railroads, construction and equipment companies, and power companies.

The Tecnored process is a new ironmaking technology, developed on a unique approach that combined empirical and theoretical knowledge backed by extensive tests carried out in a dedicated pilot-plant and with close support of universities and research centers. Campaigns in the pilot-plant focused on operate different reactors of different sizes, including a full size slice of the industrial furnace. This approach provided actual conditions to develop the main features of the process such as the internal dimensions, raceway pattern, thermal and gaseous profiles, etc, besides provide reliable data to feed and calibrate a specific mathematical process modeling. This paper presents the first computer model used by the Tecnored technical staff, focusing the behavior of a self reducing agglomerate in the upper shaft of the furnace (zone of solid state reduction). Some results of this model are given and discussed.

Experiments measuring the kinetics of oxidation and making visual observations of the oxidation of approximately 6 g static lead baths containing arsenic, antimony and tin were conducted in the temperature range from 500 to 600 oC. A range of repeatable behaviours were observed, notably: the formation of a coherent, solid oxide layers on pure lead and lead-tin alloys; the formation of liquid oxide droplets during the initial oxidation of lead-arsenic and lead-antimony alloys and the eventual formation of a complete oxide layer covering the entire free surface of these alloys. Thermogravimetric measurements revealed that the rate of oxygen uptake was strongly influenced by the form of oxides being generated at the melt/gas interface. Compared to the rates of oxidation of pure lead, arsenic increased the rate of oxygen uptake throughout the temperature range via the formation of liquid oxidation products. The presence of antimony resulted in a moderate increase in the rate of oxygen uptake as compared to arsenic. Tin was effective in lowering the rate of oxidation even in the presence of arsenic because the oxidation product was always a coherent layer that acted as a physical barrier to oxygen transport to the underlying alloy.

"Flotation circuit of the Sarcheshmeh copper mine, which processes 40,000 t/d of ore at 0.9% Cu, consists of rougher, cleaning and recleaning stages. To study the stage recovery of copper, one of the eight identical flotation banks was selected for sampling. It was observed that 17% of copper goes to the tailings and the lowest copper recovery was for particles coarser than 105 microns. The third five-cell unit of this bank not only did not recover appreciable amount of copper but also decreased the concentrate grade. The grade of the last five cells was lower than the feed grade suggesting that mixing of the concentrates of the three units was not beneficial. To alleviate the problem, the concentrate of the first four-cell unit was directed to the cleaners feed box (i.e., by- passing the regrind mill). This increased the overall copper recovery by 1.7 %. Also rather than the current practice of adding the reagents only at the feed tank (i.e., 100-0-0%), various combinations of stage addition were examined. It was found that 75-25-0% addition regime could increase the total copper recovery by 1.3%. At the recleaning stage in order to increase the final copper concentrate grade, a froth washing system was used. To ease the maintenance of the system, a shower type washing system was installed. The optimum wash water superficial flowrate was found to be 0.06 cm/s. Continuos sampling of the recleaners with and without wash water over a period of two months showed an increase of 1.5% in the final copper concentrate grade at constant overall copper recovery.INTRODUCTIONThe Sarcheshmeh copper ore body that may rank as third or fourth largest in the world contains 1 billion tonnes averaging 0.9% copper and 0.035% molybdenum. It is located in southeastern Iran and has been processing 40 000 t/d of ore since 1982. The mine produces 100 000 tonnes of copper and 2200 tonnes of molybednite concentrate per year.After three stages of crushing, the ore with a F80 (80% passing size) of 12.7 mm is fed to eight parallel ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones to produce a product 70% finer than 75 microns. The concentrate of rougher flotation circuit is ground; rougher tails constitute the main component of the plant final tailings. A concentrate with an average grade of 31% Cu (chalcocite and chalcopyrite) is obtained after cleaning and re-cleaning stages. Total recovery of the plant varies between 83% and 87%, depending on operating conditions and ore type."

Natural lignocellulosic fibers are successfully replacing synthetic fibers in many engineering applications. In addition to well-known conventional lignocellulosic fibers, others with promising properties are now being considered. The present work investigated the mechanical and structural characteristics of a relatively high strength fiber, curaua (Ananas erectifolius) from the Amazon region of Brazil. The results obtained from tensile tests confirmed the superior strength while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis displayed features that justify the possibility of using the curaua fiber as an effective reinforcement for polymeric composites.

"Difficulties with the sizing and operation of centrifugal froth pumps are common and the underlying fluid dynamics are complex. Design and selection often relies on previous experience, offering unreliable guidance for novel applications or unexpected problems. The current paper describes a program of extensive laboratory testing on froth handling centrifugal pumps, covering a range of flows, heads, speeds, viscosity, air content and froth stability. Variations in impeller vane design and the effectiveness of an airlock venting apparatus were also examined. The program resulted in a better understanding of centrifugal froth pump dynamics and insight for the troubleshooting of field applications.INTRODUCTION The Challenge of Pumping Froth In pumping mineral processing froth, the handling of large quantities of air within the fluid is often unavoidable. Efforts to reduce the amount of air present at the pump suction, while always recommended for improving pump performance, may have limitations. Some strategies may also carry an economic penalty, such as unwanted process dilution (e.g. due to water spray or injection), or increased capital cost of equipment due to oversized pumps, sumps and/or piping. Froth pumping losses fall into several categories, as described below and represented graphically in Figure 1. • Density effects: Entrained air reduces the pressure created by the centrifugal pump in direct proportion to the reduction in bulk density. This is not a true “loss”, since the head produced by the pump (in meters of froth), may remain unaffected. However, the reduction in pressure often leads to a corresponding increase in pump speed required to drive the system, which itself leads to increased NPSH required by the pump (NPSHR). Furthermore, by adding a gas phase, the overall volumetric flowrate is increased, assuming a fixed quantity of de-aerated liquid being handled. This leads to increased suction velocity which further reduces the NPSH margin by simultaneously increasing pump NPSHR and decreasing system NPSH available at the pump suction (NPSHA). • Viscosity effects: Increased viscosity introduces an additional factor in some froth pumping applications, such as oil sands bitumen froth. Losses result from increased shear stress within the fluid flow, which increase with flowrate. Viscosity also facilitates the formation of airlock by reducing turbulence and allowing individual bubbles to coalesce more easily within the flow stream. Finally, it increases pump NPSHR by increasing local pressure drop in the vicinity of the vane inlet edges. • Airlock effects: Also known as air binding, it occurs when air or gas coalesces within the pump suction or impeller passages and begins to collect there, held by buoyancy forces within the rotating flow field. In essence, the liquid “floats upwards” towards the pump suction against the outward directed centrifugal forces. The airlock acts as a blockage, with corresponding reductions in flow, head and efficiency. NPSHR also increases, due to increased velocity and distorted streamlines in the flow circumventing the blockage."

The ores treated at the concentrating plant of the Mahoning Mining Co. at Rosiclare, III., come largely from the blanket replacement deposits of the northeastern part of Hardin County, Illinois, and consist of complex mixtures of galena, sphalerite and fluorspar in a gangue of quartz, limestone and sandstone. The several minerals are so intimately inter-grown that they are not liberated at the sizes usually treated by gravity concentration in the usual fluorspar plant. For this reason, an all-flotation method of concentration was developed in cooperation with the station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo.1 This flotation separation made possible the commercial production of four concentrates: (I) lead, (2) zinc, (3) acid-grade fluorspar and (4) metallurgical-grade fluorspar.2,3 Although fluorspar had been floated in Canada in 1921 and a plant at Rosiclare had been floating fluorspar since March 1929, fluorspar flotation was given considerable impetus by the Mahoning developments, since some features of the separation were quickly adopted by other fluorspar companies. The Bureau of Mines6 reports that in the 10 years preceding 1938 only 50,552 tons of fluorspar flotation concentrates were produced in the United States. The rise from this almost nominal figure to 153,750 tons (largely acid grade) in one year (1944)6 is indicative of the activity in fluorspar flotation occasioned by the war. The industry thus proved to be in a position to expand and keep up reasonably well with the requirements imposed upon it by such developments as occurred in high octane aviation gasoline alkylation, in the use of Freon as a refrigerant and as carrier in the Aerosol "bug bomb," and in the atomic bomb project as well as in the expansion of other activities requiring hydrofluoric acid; for example, the aluminum industry. Despite the fact that the greater portion of acid-grade fluorspar produced in the last few years went directly into war uses, the future of the acid-grade field still appears bright. As a result of the activity in fluorine chemistry during the war, it seems likely that in the relatively near future almost every phase of human endeavor will find some fluorine compound involved. The other three concentrates produced deserve some attention in these introductory remarks. The lead concentrates first produced contained both zinc and fluorspar but these did not interfere with their marketing. As will be pointed out later, the quality has steadily improved until today it is a relatively high-grade product. Although some zinc smelters accept concentrates containing limited quantities of fluorspar, it is a very objectionable impurity. In this study, the cobalt oxide precursor was prepared in open-style reactor in the condition of high reactant concentration, and then the precursor was decomposed to obtain the cobalt oxides (Co3O4). The effects of some factors on the cobalt precipitation, the particle size and size distribution, and the micro-morphology were addressed. The factors studied include cobalt concentration, initial pH of solution, temperature and time for the reaction, the charge amount of urea, and the temperature for decomposition. It is determined that the precursor particle is in the chemical composition of Co2(OH)3Cl with fine crystalline. By calcinations under proper conditions, the mono-dispersed cobalt oxide particles were prepared with fine crystalline, about 2 µ m in particle size and regular shape in morphology.

M-30, Madrid’s inner ring, covers 42 sq km of the city centre where one million people reside. It was constructed in several phases during the sixties and the eighties. The design criteria applied to those phases were different and were not always homogeneous with urban roads with lighting regulation as well as speedways. These areas had a heavy concentration of access and exits and there had been made many changes on the number of traffic lanes which has caused heavy traffic congestions and high accident rates. The environmental impact and noise pollution in residential areas are also consequences of M-30. The Madrid Major took a decision at the beginning of the present legislation, based on socio economic and environmental evaluation; rebuild the M-30 with the following sustainable mobility principles: Underground transfer of a considerable portion of the main ring and some of its links replacing some parts of the surface with new green areas in order to reduce the environmental impact. Increase the traffic capacity, improving the traffic continuity and fluidity and eliminating the lighting regulation areas, which is one of the main congestion problems currently. Increase the traffic safety with clear signalling information panels and avoiding difficult maneuvering. Redesign the links with the high capacity radial highways and other connecting lanes of the city. The project is worth 3.7 billion Euros. In 2007, when the construction is completed, it is expected will save 14 million of journey hours that represent 4.5 million Euros saved in fuel consumption per annum, There will be a very significant reduction of 35,000 tons of CO2 in terms of pollution and 400 less car accidents. Those values will increase even more in the following years. The areas beside Manzanares River, running parallel to the M-30 on the western side of Madrid, will be highly enhanced. Better water quality and the recovering of the green areas existing in old times will also return for the citizen’s enjoyment. TUNNEL CROSS SECTION OF CALLE 30 SOUTH BY PASS One of the major challenges of the new Calle 30 is actually not only the related to the main road but also to the link with the A-3, with highway to Valencia. This link is currently the most congested area and has one of the highest traffic densities of Spanish roads, with more than 250,000 vehicles/day. The remodelling of this area is the principle objective of the South by-pass. The tunnel is the only answer for this by-pass as the road alignment will go among buildings. In view of the developments and recent interest in recovering heavy oil , this report was prepared to present general information on more than 2,000 heavy oil reservoirs in more than 1,500 fields in 26 states . Information given on each heavy - oil deposit includes the following items : Field and formation , location , average or range of depth , average API gravity of oil , average thickness of formation , areal extent of field , total productive wells drilled in field , discovery date of field , field status in 1963 , cumulative production to Jan. 1 , 1964 , and all known types of secondary - recovery operations initiated ( active and terminated ) in the reservoirs . The geographical location of heavy oil accumulations in the United States is shown by a map , and a brief discussion of 14 different areas is given in the text . As of Jan. 1 , 1964 , 75 percent of the heavy oil reservoirs in the United States had produced more than 10 billion barrels of oil and are estimated to contain over 90 billion barrels of oil in place . It is also estimated that if the deposits which have had little or no production history , such as the one in Missouri , were included , the total remaining heavy oil in place would be in excess of 150 billion barrels . To find economical ways of recovering this vast reserve of heavy oil , industry is developing technology in several types of thermal - recovery methods . Some of the general considerations and more suitable limitations in selecting a prospect to study for thermal - recovery techniques are : Lithology , depth , viscosity of reservoir fluids , gravity of oil , reservoir thickness , oil in place , and permeability and porosity .

Supply and Demand After a dismal first half, the industry saw a marked improvement in its markets during the final six months of 1983. Domestic consumption was 17.6% higher in the second half of the year, primarily due to a surge in electric power requirements. The sharp increase in demand for electric power during the third and fourth quarters afforded utilities the opportunity to lower stocks that had accumulated to record levels during 1982. Consumer stocks were reduced from 179 Mt (197 million st) at the end of June to 153 Mt (169 million st) by the end of the year. That is the largest inventory drawdown on record during a six-month period without a major coal strike. Despite the huge depletion in inventories, coal production in the second half of 1983 rose 1.3% above output in the second half of 1982. However, because of the disappointing first half, production in 1983 totaled only 712 Mt (785 million st), 6.4% less than the 760 Mt (838 million st) produced in 1982. Demand The extent to which the economic recovery affected coal markets in 1983 varied: • total domestic coal consumption increased 4.2%; • electric utility coal consumption increased 5.3%; • exports declined by about one-fourth; • coal consumption at coke plants declined 9.5%; and • coal consumption in the other industrial sectors increased 2.9%. Domestic coal consumption totaled 667 Mt (737 million st) it 1983, 27 Mt (30 million st) more than 1982. Electric utility consumption increased from 539 M1 (594 million st) in 1982 to 567 M1 (625 million st) in 1983. Coal consumption at coke plants declined from 37 Mt (41 million st) to 34 M1 (37 million st). Residential and commercial use increased 181 kt (200,000 st) - from 7.4 to 7.6 Mt (8.2 to 8.4 million st). Electric Utilities: Electric power generation increased 3.1% in 1983. Demand for electric power increased in all major consumer categories. Residential and commercial use rose 2.7% and 3.3%, respectively. The most striking increase, however, and indicative of the economy's strong upturn, was the increase in industrial electric power use.
