[THE BUREAU OF MINES receives many requests for information regarding the low-temperature carbonization properties of American coals. This report presents in collected form the results of Fischer-Schrader bench-scale, low-temperature carbonization assays at 500° C. made by the Chemistry and Physics Section at the Pittsburgh station of the Bureau of Mines. Most of the assays were made of coals tested in connection with a survey of gas and coke-making properties of American coals,4 which was started in 1928 by the Bureau in cooperation with the American Gas Association. Other coals were assayed in connection with miscellaneous investigations. Since 1930 about 400 samples of coal were assayed from nearly every coal-producing State, Alaska, and British Columbia, Canada. The results of the tests on about two-thirds of the coals are scattered through more than 50 separate publications. This paper summarizes the data in the published reports as well as all unpublished data obtained to January 1, 1956. The report also includes a detailed description of the procedure used in making the assay.]

"VIBRONICS, INC. instrumented and monitored a residential structure for response to,blasting at aMidwestern surface coal operation. The residence was owned by the mining company and was extremely close to the operation. Blasting was conducted within 120 feet (36.5 meters) of the test structure. Up to seventeen (17), four (4)-channel seismographs were used during the monitoring period. The basement walls and floor were monitored. VIBRONICS, INC. also monitored a brick chimney in the basement and attic. Structural responses were then compared to outside vibration measurements taken in the soil near the foundation."

The development and operation of "combination wells"5/ have created new and unusual problems, many of which can he solved only if information is available concerning the properties of the fluids produced. Data as to the characteristics of the fluids at the relatively high pressures that exist in the reservoirs are especially important, and there is growing economic concern to know what part, if any, of the liquid recovered at the surface was liquid in the reservoir, As an extension of this problem, it is important to know, whether liquid will be formed in the reservoir as a result of isothermal retrograde condensation when the reservoir pressure is reduced. The pressure range of such condensation, if it occurs, is significant in the design of gas-recycling plants for maintaining reservoir pressures. In connection with the operation of such plants, it is particularly important to know how pressure and temperature will affect the yield of the liquid phase and the composition of the gas to be returned to the reservoir. It has not been possible to predict the behavior of these fluids that have high ratios off gas to liquid by comparing them with the behavior of low gas-liquid ratio fluids at identical pressures and temperatures. Such comparison fails because the proportions in which a component will be distributed between the phases of a system at any given temperature and pressure depend increasingly on the composition of the mixture as the critical temperature and. pressure of the system are approached. Because many combination wells are producing from reservoirs that have temperatures near the critical point, experimental date on the properties of the Fluids under reservoir conditions are particularly important at this time, To meet the immediate requirements of the industry for such experimental information, an equilibrium cell has been constructed at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Bartlesville, Okla. When adequate experimental date have been accumulated, it may be possible to make dependable estimates of the phase relations for high gas-liquid ratio fluids at the pressures anti temperatures characteristic of "combination-well? reservoirs.

WHEN this Government was founded, the framers of the Constitution wrote into that instrument a provision that Congress should "coin money and fix the value thereof;" and the Constitution prohibits making anything but "gold and silver" lawful money. So silver is written into our basic law. Shortly after President Washington took office in 1789 the Congress passed the first Mint Act, setting up the U. S. Mint. In that Act, signed by President Washington on April 2, 1792, the weight of the American dollar was fixed, and it was provided how much silver should be contained in a silver dollar and how much gold should be contained in a gold dollar. It was decided that 371 1/4 grains of pure silver was to be the standard dollar of America. That standard with respect to the pure silver content of the dollar has never changed.

This paper details the extensive underpinning required to hold up the 39th street Bridge while demolishing its massive support piers and building a 30ft deep Cut/ Cover RR tunnel beneath it. The underpinning/SOE support required the construction of 16 large hand dug pits 36ft deep that were reinforced and concrete filled. In addition, an extensive steel support system was tied into the bridge super structure. All of the underpinning/tunnel construction was done while a 110ton crane sat directly atop the heavily trafficked – 66 ft. wide bridge. The tunnel excavation, concrete lining and final bridge pier support work will also be presented. All work was done within 5ft of active mainline tracks and that required tight grouting behind all lagging to eliminate any track settlement.

The RiverRenew Tunnel System project in Alexandria, VA forms part of a CSO scheme aimed at reducing overflows of combined stormwater and sewage into the Potomac River during storm events. A major piece of the project is a 12-foot internal diameter tunnel of approximately 12,000 feet length lined with a single-pass precast concrete segmental liner and excavated by an Earth-Pressure Balanced Shield TBM. The tunnel lies between 120 to 140 feet below grade in the clays of the Upper Potomac Formation with occasional dips of more granular, saturated soils of the Terrace Formation and the Alluvium. The TBM is launched from a figure-8 configuration Pumping/Screening Shaft located within AlexRenew’s operational Water Resource Recovery Facility. This paper discusses the challenges encountered during the launch of the TBM in short mode within a highly congested site and from narrow deep shafts.

Ore microscopy has been applied to the complex lead-zinc-copper-cobalt-nickel ores from the Madison Mire in the Fredericktown subdistrict of the Southeast Missouri Lead District to predict potential beneficiation problems. It has been found that in some portions of the ore deposits, textures are present which may result in metal losses. In ores from the Bonneterre Transition Zone the intimate association of siegenite with chalcopyrite may result in cobalt and nickel losses to the copper concentrate. In ores from higher stratigraphic horizons, this association is relatively uncommon, and siegenite is commonly associated with bravoite. This latter association will increase the recovery of the cobalt and nickel in bravoite, even though some of the fine-grained bravoite will not be recoverable. Other textures which may result in potential beneficiation problems include coatings of covellite on chalcopyrite and inclusions of sphalerite in galena.

During longwall mining in the Bowen Basin, open tension cracks formed by overburden subsidence occur to a height of about 175 m above the mining horizon. Within this zone, water in aquifers or inundated workings will flow into the mine.At the Oaky Creek mines Aquila seam, open cut pits containing pit water overlie German Creek seam longwall panels at a height of about 105 m. The highly saline water is classified as contaminated and cannot be discharged off-site. Because alternative water storage facilities were not available, innovative water management solutions were needed to allow longwall mining to proceed without underground flooding.Computer modelling and underground inflow measurements have been completed to accurately determine inflow rates into longwall mines from overlying water sources at increasing overburden heights. Research work has also included determining cost-effective blanket treatment of final voids and reshaping spoil piles to minimise downward seepage.Ponded water overlying the Aquila low, Grasstree south and A6 pits required remedial works prior to longwall undermining to prevent flooding. In the Aquila low pit it was necessary to partition the pit and remove water overlying longwall 32. Two in-pit bridges were constructed by dozing and track compacting low wall spoil. The final void above the longwall panel was kept dry during undermining. Maximum recorded underground inflow rate was 30.0 L/s.The Grasstree south pit final void, part of the ramp and much of the spoil piles were inundated prior to undermining of 308 panel. A bridge and blanket were required to prevent ponding above the longwall. Maximum recorded inflow during undermining was 23.2 L/s.The pit A6 south final void, which contained dumped, saturated rejects and inundated highwall mining entries was undermined by longwall 36 at the Oaky No 1 underground mine. Because mapping of highwall entries was not available, the maximum calculated inflow rate of 73.0 L/s was based on all design entries being fully inundated. The actual inflow rate during longwall mining ranged up to 20.0 L/s.Water management improvements that have been implemented include greater use of contaminated pit water to wash coal, use of evaporation fans, and installation of a 6 ML/day reverse osmosis plant for water purification.CITATION:Klenowski, G and Winter, S, 2017. Leonard and Newman (1989) describe concepts and plans of their forthcoming project designed to increase the bulk density of broken coal at various stages of its production and handling. This is an excellent idea and something that will certainly be useful to the coal mining industry worldwide. The authors seek to achieve bulk density increase by "reducing oreliminating, through chemical additives and engineering design, particle voidage and enhance particle consolidation trickling between the point of breakage (at the face) and loading (in the shuttle car) to increase coal bulk density and productivity." In the paper, they present some supporting results of bulk density versus moisture, with or without oil addition, from the steel industry research. Unfortunately, the paper contains many misconceptions and half-truths that detract from an otherwise excellent objective of the project of increasing bulk density by reducing particle voidage -"the bottom line evaluator." Lightweight mechanically self-deploying posts designed to safely support a load of 10,000 pounds each. ? Golden Sunlight Mines Inc. operates an open-pit gold mine and cyanidation plant about 11km (7 miles) northeast of Whitehall, MT. Golden Sunlight is a subsidiary of Placer Dome US Inc. Mining is accomplished with conventional open pit drilling, blasting and hauling methods. The mining rate is about 102 kt/d (113,000 stpd). Gold occurs as fine-grained disseminations in a pipe-shaped breccia and in immediately adjacent country rock. The ore body is low grade, averaging 2 g/t (0.059 oz per st) of gold. The metallurgical plant uses conventional carbon-in-pulp (CIP) technology. Daily throughput averages 6.5 kt (7000 st). Recoveries are enhanced through a sand tailing retreatment facility while a preaeration process reduces operating costs. The low grade ore dictates that maximum mill throughput at the desired grind size be maintained. Therefore, in October 1988, an Armco Autometrics (now Denver Autometrics) particle size monitor (PSM) 400 was commissioned. The PSM 400 is an on-line instrument. It measures particle size and percent solids in a slurry stream. The PSM pulls its own sample, deareates the sample and passes it through diametrically opposed ultrasonic sensors. The unit uses ultrasonic sound to measure the deareated slurry stream's particle size and percent solids.

The most fundamental feature of fracture is that it involves separation. Such separation can arise by either separation of molecules, more or less along the line joining their centers (tension), or by d sliding separation roughly perpendicular to that line (shear). Theoretically, a perfect crystal could never be broken by the application of perfectly axial compressive stress (until some sub-molecular actions occur). In tension fields the calculated forces between molecules are extremely high. Consequently, calculations based on the forces known to exist in materials at the molecular and crystalline levels always lead to strengths which are two or three magnitudes higher than the strengths obtained in service or in the laboratory. It has been a major problem, therefore, to explain: (a) How fracture can occur in compressive stress states. (b) Why the observed strength of a material is always much lower than its calculated strength.

"In seeking to supply the ever increasing needs for raw materials, the mining industry has been required to develop lower grade resources in increasingly remote regions of the world. This has resulted in the extension of many frontiers, both technologically and geographically.The accent of mineral processing research over the last few decades has been to “do existing things better”. There have been many breakthroughs in equipment and processes; however in general the accent has been to increase capacity of existing unit processes, often by orders of magnitude, or to refine the process itself by basic research and development. This has lead to added sophistication, enabling the process engineer to maintain optimum performance of his equipment while reducing the cost, and the amount of labour needed to operate the plant.While much of the increased requirement for resources is handled by the development of ever larger, lower grade orebodies, a significant portion still comes from the small miner - even the artisanal miner - operating in remote and often politically sensitive parts of the world. For them, innovation and simplicity are the keys, not sophistication.The tension between sophistication and simplicity - or research and reality - is specially evident in the area of gravity concentration of rare metals, such as tin and tantalum. This paper looks at this tension, primarily from the eyes of an operator and seeks to put into perspective the two paradigms."

An understanding of the nature of yield zones surrounding coal mine excavations is fundamental to the design of mine support systems. Various methods have been designed for investigation of underground rock masses and an extensometric technique, the Magnetic Rod Extensometer, has been developed to overcome inherent design limitations in existing equipment of this type. This paper refers to the prototype form of the extensometer and details changes designed to overcome a variety of drawbacks indicated by routine use of the equipment. The principal change has been one of manual to computerised data acquisition and presentation in the laboratory phase of the system. This has dramatically reduced the time taken to process underground measurements and produce numerical and graphical results. The revised Magnetic Rod Extensometer represents an integrated instrumentation system that combines speed and accuracy in all areas of data handling.

"Potassium is one of the three basic plant nutrients along with nitrogen and phosphorus. There is no substitute for potassium compounds in agriculture; they are essential to maintain and expand food production.Potash is extracted from buried ancient evaporites by underground or solution mining. This accounts for most of the potassium produced. Another important source is brine from landlocked water bodies, such as the Dead Sea, Salar de Atacama or Great Salt Lake.About 95% of potash produced worldwide is used in agriculture. The rest is found in several other industrial uses, including glass manufacturing, soaps, plastics and pharmaceuticals.Currently, three producers: IMC, PCS and Agrium operate 8 conventional and two solution mines in Saskatchewan, five of which run froth flotation circuits, two heavy media-flotation, two run forced crystallization and one natural crystallization.Potash in SaskatchewanPotash was discovered in Saskatchewan in the early 1940’s while drilling for oil. The deposits lie diagonally across the southern plains of Saskatchewan sloping southerly from a 1,000m depth at Saskatoon to more than 1,600 m depth at Belle Plaine and up to 3,000 m in depth in North Dakota. The known deposits are massive, accounting for more than 40% of the world’s known reserves."

THIS REPORT give's the results of a study of the central and south parts of the Cushing oilfield, including a description of the geology, a review of the production history, and estimates of oil reserves available by secondary-recovery methods. Each of the major producing zones of the field is treated separately. The report, which is one of a long series of field studies the Bureau of Mines has conducted over the past 40 years, was prepared to aid operators to increase oil recovery and to help prevent underground waste in the Cushing field, in the State of Oklahoma, and in the United States. The geology and production history are presented not as a review of past behavior of the Cushing field but rather to interpret the possibilities for increased oil recovery by future development of this and similar areas. The field, which is in the northwest corner of Creek County, Okla., was discovered in 1912 and developed during 1913 and 1914. For several years it, was one of the most important areas producing high-grade crude oil in Oklahoma. Although some oil has been recovered from each of 10 separate reservoirs, nearly 98 percent of the total recovery of oil in the area studied was from 4 major producing formations (table 1). "The McClean Lake operation is located in the Eastern Shore of the Athabasca Basin in northern Saskatchewan some 700-air kilometers north of Saskatoon. It is operated by Cogema Resources Inc., the major share holder of the joint venture consisting of Cogema Resources Inc., Denison Mines Limited and OURD, a consortium of Japanese utilities.The JEB mill is the first uranium mill to be constructed and licensed in North America within the last 15 years. The mill uses conventional uranium unit process but employs innovative techniques unique to the JEB mill.This paper presents brief descriptions of the various unit processes, the innovations and the commissioning strategies developed to achieve the designed production capacity in the shortest possible time.INTRODUCTIONThe McClean Lake ore body was discovered in 1979, followed by the discovery of the JEB ore body in 1982. From 1985 to 1990, a cluster of deposits named Sue A, Sue B and Sue C were discovered. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIS) of the McClean Lake project began in 1990 under a joint federal-provincial process. Following the public hearings in 1993, the governments gave approval to proceed with the construction of the project, subject to fulfilling licensing requirements.The McClean Lake ores are located in the uranium-rich geological region of Saskatchewan known as the Athabasca Basin, 700 air kilometers north of Saskatoon. The JEB mill is located near the mined out JEB open pit that is now used as the tailing depository.The approved mill has a production capacity of 6,000,000 pounds of U3O8 annually and is capable and licensed to process JEB, Sue A, Sue B, Sue C, McClean Lake, and Midwest Lake deposits. Although the EIS has been approved, Mining of the Midwest Lake deposit has not been approved at this time."

"Abstract The present study proposed a new liquefaction countermeasure to improve sandy ground and conducted a trial execution. The new method is a floating-type and lattice-shaped cement treatment method, where cement-treated soil is not fixed to a non-liquefiable stratum. A fixed structure such as treated soil should be formed at the side of the floating-type treated soil to reduce its lateral displacement. In the study, one-dimensional dynamic response analyses were first conducted to confirm the mechanism of the new method. Then, a series of centrifuge model tests were performed to demonstrate the effect under a stress condition at the prototype scale. The analyses and model tests confirmed the effect of the liquefaction countermeasure. Finally, trial executions were carried out to confirm high-quality vertical execution.INTRODUCTIONLiquefaction induced by an earthquake generates sand boiling and ground settlement. Other problems have also been reported, including a decrease in bearing capacity and an increase in the horizontal earth pressure against retaining walls. To prevent these problems caused by liquefaction of the ground, various countermeasures have been proposed, such as cement deep mixing and high-pressure jet mixing methods. These methods have the big advantage of being applicable to ground that contains soil with a fine-grain fraction. Furthermore, the unnecessary displacement caused by the construction can be reduced. In Japan, a lattice-shaped cement-treatment method has frequently been used at many construction sites to prevent liquefaction, where cement-treated piles are intersected to form a lattice, as shown in Fig. 1. The lattice-shaped walls can reduce the shear stress generated by an earthquake, restricting the liquefaction at that location. However, the construction cost of the cement treatment is relatively high compared to other methods such as the sand compaction pile (SCP) method, and needs to be reduced. In particular, the cost of the high-pressure jet mixing method, which can be applied to the liquefiable ground under existing structures, is significantly high. Therefore, decreasing the total volume of the cement treatment is necessary to reduce the construction cost."

The Bureau of Mines determined total sulfur and sulfur forms for coal in 283 counties in 29 States and 2 fields of the State of Alaska. Specifically, organic, pyritic, and sulfate sulfur were measured of approximately 2,900 samples, and they include most of the coalbeds in the United States.

INTRODUCTION The honor of being the recipient of the Mining Society's Daniel C. Jackling Award for 1966 imposes on me the responsibility to search for the subject that I would be best qualified to discuss. It seems that my experience in the mineral industry — nearly 15 years in private and 30 years in public employment — should uniquely qualify me to comment upon the relationships between the mining industry, mineral engineering as a profession, and government, and the changing economic, technologic, political and social changes that dictate their relationships. Such conditions, the increasing knowledge of the world mineral resource base, the greater demands of an expanding population with a rising standard of living, shall be evaluated with respect to our profession — mineral engineering. In all of these forty or so years, I have been in close touch with many phases of the mineral and energy resource industries, especially those of the United States. Particularly during the past 10 years, I have had a ringside seat at the "goings on" in Washington. During all of this period I have observed and analyzed many of the problems of the industry and its relations with the government. During the past few years, I have had increased opportunity for doing research and have found a need to learn something about the mathematical techniques that are undergoing such a revival since electronic computers were developed. One of these techniques is multivariate analysis, which is a system for correlating a large number of complex variables. By applying this technique to the seemingly chaotic present-day situation, there emerges a course of steady improvement in the minerals resource industries that wars, depressions, and political strife have failed to obstruct for long. In short, I advocate a need for new concepts in mineral engineering to cope with the changes, pos- sibly adding many more specialized areas on one end of the spectrum, and broad engineer-generalist approaches at the other. The meeting place shall be where the intricate mineral resource problems at the frontier of knowledge merge into the socio-techno-logical problems of the world. HISTORICAL INVOLVEMENT OF GOVERNMENT IN MINERAL RESOURCE PROBLEMS Involvement of government in mineral resource problems undoubtedly is as old as government itself. But passage of the Mining Act of 1866, superseded by the Act of 1872, was the first major entry of our Federal Government into the problems of mining. Passage of the law was necessary to resolve many conflicting claims and disputes in mining. The General Mining Law of 1872 and the Mineral Leasing Laws of 1920 apply to millions of acres of public lands and to certain privately owned land on which the mineral rights have been reserved to the Federal Government. The extensive involvement of government in the mineral industry business today often comes as a shock to the mineral engineer who has begun to climb the ladder to the top in his company. He is often poorly prepared to cope with the situation and becomes frustrated and even hostile. Better knowledge of the role of government perhaps would ease his situation. In our political system, private industry is responsible for producing minerals. To make certain that the production is adequate for a peace-time economy, and to guarantee the Nation's security in an emergency, the Federal Government finds it expedient to develop policy and engage in regulatory, educational, and research activities. A few examples will illustrate the varied role of government in relation to mineral problems. In varying degrees many agencies of the Executive Branch of Government have responsibilities that influence the functioning of the mineral and energy industries. In addition, of course, Congress, the Judiciary, and State and local governments exercise great influence.
