"Hydraulically jacked piles, herein referred to as jacked piles, are commonly used for underpinning existing structures to arrest settlement or augment an existing foundation for higher loads. They consist of steel pipe segments coupled together and jacked into the ground using a hydraulic ram. Pipe sections can vary in size from 3"" diameter to 18"" diameter or larger. Jacking resistance is typically provided by dead loads of existing structures. This type of piling system has been utilized for foundation underpinning, repair, and augmentation for more than 120 years, yet little has been published on the capacity, installation standards, and reliability of these systems. Pile load tests from a number of projects are presented and analysed. The data show that previous methods of jacked pile capacity and depth prediction are crude at best. Empirical relationships between capacity, depth, soil type, and standard penetration resistance blow count contain a high degree of scatter. Scatter in the data indicate capacity prediction for jacked piles needs further research and refinement.INTRODUCTIONPush pier, resistance pile, steel pier, and jacked pile are some of the names often applied to hydraulically jacked piles used for underpinning. The term ‘jacked pile’ is more common in building codes and will be used herein. Although jacked piles can be installed for new construction, this paper is focused on piles used for support of existing structures.Jacked piles consist of short segments of pipe or structural steel tube that are coupled together and forced into the ground using a hydraulic ram fastened to or beneath a footing, stem wall, or grade beam of an existing structure. In this way, the weight of the structure provides the resistance necessary to force the pile into the ground. A factor of safety can be achieved in design by redundancy, which is consecutively installing more than one jacked pile to support the same portion of foundation. Installing jacked piles consecutively using the same dead load and then releasing the load after each pile installation allows one to continue adding piles to the same general area until a total aggregate capacity is achieved to account for anticipated dead plus live loads and a desired factor of safety for that area.An engineering schematic of an example jacked pile connected to a footing foundation is shown in Figure 1. Modern jacked piles typically incorporate a steel bracket. There are many sizes and styles of brackets available. Some categories include plate brackets that bolt to the outside of an existing foundation wall, wide and narrow angle brackets that extend under existing footings, pin brackets for attachment to structural steel, and reverse angle brackets for attachment to footing and wall. The environmental problems arisen from ground vibration and air blast have been faced and discussed frequently in various industries such as mining, construction, quarry, pipe line etc. where blasting is unavoidable operation. Structural damage due to ground vibrations creates great socio-economic problems for mine and quarry management as well as for the people residing in its vicinity, therefore in bench blast design, not only the technical and economical aspects, such as block size, uniformity and cost, but also the elimination of environmental problems resulting from ground vibration and air blast should be taken into consideration. With the general trend towards larger blasts in mining and infrastructure excavation, ground vibration and air blast problems and complaints have significantly increased. With increasing environmental constraints on the levels of disturbance induced by blasting operations upon nearby residents, there is an increasing need to be able to design cautious blasting with greater precision, therefore determination of maximum amount of explosive per delay for a certain distance especially in large blasts is of great importance for the elimination of these environmental problems. In another word, prediction of ground vibration components is extremely important for the minimisation of the environmental complaints. Estimating of particle velocity and other components of ground vibration with reliable approaches will give important facilities to the blasters. Although many studies had been carried out to isolate environmental problems induced by blasting in the past, a general reliable formulae has not been established yet. Due to restrictions on the complexity of ground motion, blasting and test site factors, experimental studies are still necessary for each site to minimise environmental issues. This paper presents the results of ground vibration measurements carried out during the excavation activity for contruction of an organised industrial region located nearby Istanbul in Turkey. The major rock type is granite that is encountered at this site. Within the scope of this study, in order to predict peak particle velocity level and produce a site-specific propagation curve for this site, ground vibration components were measured for blast events during bench blast optimization studies over a long period. In blasting operations; ANFO (blasting agent), gelatine dynamite (priming) and delay detonators (firing) were used as explosives. While the parameters of scaled distance (charge quantity per delay and the distance between the shot and the station) were recorded carefully, the ground vibration components were measured by means of two different vibration monitors for every event. Then, the data pairs of scaled distance and particle velocity were analyzed. The equation of scaled distance extensively used in the literature was taken into consideration for the prediction of peak particle velocity. At the end of statical analysis and evaluations an empirical relationship with good correlation was established between peak particle velocity and scale distance for this site.

INTRODUCTION Phosphatic resources may be quantified in terms of ore tons and phosphate analyses; however, to quantify phosphate reserves it is necessary to estimate the tons and quality of phosphate rock that can be extracted from the ore. The yield and grade of phosphate rock that can recovered from sedimentary phosphate deposits are usually difficult to estimate because of variations in stratigraphy and/or mineralogy. Prospecting phosphorite ores for purposes of estimating reserves and preparing mine plans requires considerably more effort than defining ore thickness and P205 content. In Florida, for example, it is standard practice to prospect by core drilling and to subject each strata (split) to beneficiation testing, and to perform detailed chemical analyses on the beneficiated products from each strata. For a completed drilling pattern the area of influence of each hole is 2.5 acres. The number of strata per drill hole typically varies from two to five, and thus complete prospecting of a 40acre tract requires drilling 16 core holes and beneficiation testing of about 48 ore samples. Florida practice is not appropriate for all phosphorite deposits. Functional drill rigs and trained drillers may not be readily available. Water for core drilling may be unavailable and the characteristics of either the overburden or ore may require careful attention and excessive cost to obtain representative core samples. Alternate ore sampling methods include auger drilling, rotary drilling to obtain cuttings, and the excavation of trenches, pits, and shafts. Drill cuttings samples are generally the least expensive to obtain, but they are usually unsuitable for beneficiation testing because of particle size reduction during drilling. Ore samples from surface trenches and pits are expensive and may not be representative of deeper ore. Ore samples from shafts are the most expensive to obtain, but if taken properly they are reliable for use in laboratory and pilot plant testing. Regardless of the prospecting technique used, reliable estimates of the yield and grade of phosphate rock that can be extracted from an ore deposit are required: • to justify capital expenditures for a new mine • for mine design and mine planning • for beneficiation plant design • for production forecasts, quality control, and marketing. This paper describes models that predict the beneficiation response of ores from three phosphate ore deposits. The purpose of these models is to obtain maximum utilization of available prospect data with the least cost. ORE DEPOSITS Simple beneficiation models have been developed for ores from three sedimentary phosphate deposits around the Mediterranean area. The first deposit, herein described as "A" ore, is located north of the Mediterranean Sea. The second deposit, designated as "B" ore, is located east of the Mediterranean Sea, while the third deposit, "C" ore, is located south of the Mediterranean Sea. Ore "C" is from the Sra Ouertane deposit in northwestern Tunisia.

CORUNDUM, little publicized as an industrial abrasive, has, in its small way, contributed greatly to the production of many specialized items vital to our war program and to our allies. Optical elements of the highest quality for range finders, bombsights, and scientific instruments; precision metal parts for torpedoes and airplane engines; quartz crystal plates for military radios; armorplate and malleable castings for tanks and guns; and eyeglasses for everyone; these are some of the products that corundum has helped to produce in the quantities needed and on time. Unlike metals and many other raw materials, corundum is not incorporated into any of these finished products. It is simply a grinding medium used to produce the desired finish or precision; an operating supply or tool, so to speak. With a Mohs' scale index of o, corundum ranks next to the diamond in hardness among the natural minerals and is superior to emery and garnet. The gem varieties of corundum, including the Oriental ruby and sapphire, are frequently more highly prized as jewels than the diamond. It is the intent of this paper to deal only with a description of the corundum industry, the administration of wartime control, and certain economic aspects as seen by the author. Several references are listed to assist anyone who wishes further information on the geological occurrence of the mineral. ORE PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION For the past two decades, South Africa has been the world's sole producer of corundum ore. A possible exception is Russia, where, it is understood, there was considerable production during the thirties for domestic consumption but for which statistics are lacking. The United States is the world's principal consumer of corundum ore; imports for the period 1934 through 1940 averaging 3000 short tons per year. The years 1935 and 1936 were close to the 5000-ton mark, and imports during 1941, the last prewar year for which statistics have been released, were approximately 6000 short tons. Again lacking statistics on Russia, the United Kingdom ranks second, but far below the United States in consumption of ore. Historically, corundum has been found in some 35 countries throughout the world, but the principal deposits are in South Africa, Canada, Madagascar, Russia and the United States. Deposits are generally small and subject to rapid exhaustion. Thus, the United States was the principal world producer for the period 1870 to 1900, when operations ceased except for two years during World War I. India was a producer of ore from 1898 through 1921, with peak output in 1916 through 1918. Canada came into production in 1901 with substantial output of ore and finished grain until 1914; the production thereafter was smaller until 1921. Madagascar has produced ore since 1910 but has had important output in only a few scattered years. South African production started in 1912,

A METHOD for the chemical differentiation of oxidized cobalt from sulphide cobalt in complex mine and concentrator products is of considerable interest to a number of mining companies throughout the world. At Rhokana Corporation, in Northern Rhodesia, for instance, cobalt is found chiefly in the sulphide form, as carrollite, but a cobalt oxide mineral also occurs irregularly underground, and relatively small quantities in the mill feed from time to time are difficult to detect it visually at the concentrator. The oxide cobalt is not amenable to the sulphide flotation process used at Rhokana and nearly all of it passes into the tailing. The occasional. period when high tailing losses occur with no appreciable change in the cobalt content of the mill feed has naturally been disturbing to the concentrator staff, who had no means of determining whether an influx of cobalt oxide ore or laxity on the part of the mill flotation operators were responsible for these results. A procedure for determining oxidized copper minerals, based on their solubility in dilute sulphuric acid saturated with SO2, has been used for many years in the copper industry. In the presence of cuprite the procedure fails, but otherwise it gives results quite satisfactory for control purposes. Empirical methods for determining oxidized forms of zinc and lead have been proposed, but they are generally unsatisfactory except in isolated cases of a very simple ore. No published procedure for determining oxidized forms of cobalt or similar elements has come to the authors' notice. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE There are obviously two alternatives in attacking a problem of this nature. One is to employ a solvent for oxide cobalt that will not dissolve cobalt sulphide. The other is, to find a substance capable of oxidizing the cobalt sulphide to sulphate, which of course is water-soluble and can then be leached from the water-insoluble oxide cobalt. A representative sample of Rhokana cobalt oxide ore was secured, ground to minus 200-mesh, and carefully rolled to furnish a standard sample for this work. The analysis of this material gave the following percentages: Co, 0.55; Cu, 1.64; Fe, 2.98; S, 0.08; SiO2, 41.42; A1203, 11.20; CaO, 13.82; MgO, 3.80. As a source of cobalt sulphide a similar large sample of carrollite was prepared, analyzing Co, 23.36 per cent; Cu, 27.32; and S, 31.13. This sample of course was not pure carrollite, but was the best obtainable in quantities sufficient for a standard intended for considerable work. It was a pure sulphide sample, microscopic examination showing only carrollite, a little bornite, and gangue, with no visible sign of oxidized ore present. In the case of plastic deformation by slip, von Mises&apos; showed that an arbitrary shape change of a crystal generally requires the activation of five independent slip systems. The selection of the five active systems was worked out by Taylor ,&apos; who hypothesized that, among all combinations of equivalent slip systems which are capable of accommodating a given imposed strain, the active combination is that one for which the sum of the absolute values of the glide shears is a minimum. Taylor analyzed the case of {lll}( 110) slip for fcc metals and applied the analysis to crystals undergoing axisymmetric flow, which approximates the shape change of an embedded grain in a polycrystalline aggregate deformed in tension (or compression). For the twelve equivalent (111) (110) slip systems, there are 384 independent combinations of five slip systems that satisfy the imposed strain.&apos; Taylor laboriously calculated the value of M = ZjIyj /E for each combination (although some were missed) and obtained the minimum M, hence the active combination, for a number of axial orientations distributed throughout the stereographic triangle. (yj is shear from slip on the th system and e is the tensile strain). Detailed contours of constant minimum M were recently obtained by Hosford and Backofen using a simplified but equivalent Bishop and ill&apos; analysis. Due to the numerous combinations of slip systems involved in the calculations, however, the full potential of the powerful Taylor analysis has not been exploited. For this reason, we have recently utilized techniques of linear programming to obtain solutions of the Taylor analysis for axisymmetric flow, for slip on {110)(< 111), {112)(111), and {123)(111) systems as well as mixed slip composed of these three systems. These slip modes are of obvious importance in the deformation of bcc crystals. Some of the salient results are summarized below. 1) Stress-Strain Data for Polycrystal. The value of M averaged over all axial orientations is the ratio of the tensile flow strength of a randomly oriented aggregate to the critical resolved shear stress for slip. This value enters importantly in theoretical deductions of the polycrystalline stress-strain curve from single-crystal data.2&apos;3&apos;5 Table I lists the values of Ma,, for the several cases of slip, as obtained by the present computer work. 2) Texture Hardening. Since the value of M depends on the axial orientation, the (tensile) flow strength of a specimen may be increased through texture control.&apos; An example of the computer results is shown in Fig. 1, where contours of minimum M have been computer-plotted for the case of mixed slip on {110}(111), {112)(111),and {123}(11 1) systems. It may be seen that, under axisymmetric flow, wires of (111) and (110) axial orientations are 50 pct stronger than those oriented at (100) .

"A t remote locations typical of mines and associated ore processing plants, diesel electric generators are ideally suited for power plants due to their inherent operating flexibility, efficiency and reliability. In recent years rapid escalation in fuel and related transportation costs has made extensive waste heat recovery from generating sets financially attractive to a much greater extent than previously.The paper outlines key considerations during planning and design stages for utilizing the various waste heat sources available to best advantage. Based on two /980 mining projects built in the Canadian Arctic, data is presented on potential operating and capital costs savings. A review of heat balances, engineering flow diagrams and major equipment selections for process and building heating systems utilizing waste heat is included.IntroductionResource projects increasingly occur in remote areas requiring on-site self sufficiency in electrical power generation. For such projects, the low- or medium-speed turbo-charged diesel engine is very often the preferred choice as a prime mover for the generating sets . It is inherently reliable, has good response to load changes and has comparatively high fuel efficiency over a wide load range . From a project execution standpoint, It is capital cost- competitive and procurement lead-time normally &apos; fits &apos; within tight schedule constraints. In addition, its potential for waste heat recovery is excellent , particularly in northern climates where space heating requirements are usually substantial, and also where there a re requirements for heat for process and plant services.The high cost of fuel , with add-on transportation costs , provides a major incentive to fully exploit the available waste heat recovery potential o f such installations.As a result of the rapid escalation in the price of petroleum products following major crude oil price increases in 1973 and again in 1978-79, liquid petroleum fuels, having the desirable properties of comparatively high heat content and transportability, are no longer &apos;cheap&apos; commodities and have become so valuable that industry has widely undertaken serious conservation efforts.Currently, it appears that petroleum cost trends of the 1970s may not continue, at least in the near term, and that we may see somewhat reduced energy costs for a time. In the longer term , and certainly within the life spa n of major projects, however, it is generally believed to be inevitable that these fuels will be increasingly expensive . Energy costs are today a major operating cost for remote minerals processing plants and will remain so for the foreseeable future.In order to meet the economic challenge posed by high energy costs, future projects should be thoughtfully planned from the outset with the goal of minimizing energy requirements and maximizing the use of waste heat recovery to meet such requirements. There is also considerable potential for significant energy savings by retrofitting of existing installations."

It is shown that factors associated with conditions whIch are thermodynamically favourable for the formation of CuS04 in roasting lead to high copper recoveries on leaching. One of these factors is the ratio of the air to solids used for roasting. This can be varied widely without loss of temperature control in the sulphating roasting of many Australian copper concentrates.Thus, the prediction of the air to solids ratio corresponding to a maximum p(SO3) value, for a given concentrate and temperature, is of importance in fluidized bed roasting, since this could be associated with the formation of a maximum quantity of CuS04. Calculations are presented which predict this air to solids ratio, not only for a given concentrate composition, temperature, and pressure, but also for air which is enriched with sulphur dioxide or oxygen.

Deterministic and stochastic simulation were combined to develop a computer model of an open pit mining system using bucket wheel excavators and related materials handling equipment. The model is closed and dynamic in the sense that information is fed back to control activities at various levels and reservoirs. The results of interaction between unit operations in one time interval determines overall system behavior for the next interval. Equipment performance curves and system profile characteristics rather than time studies are applied to determine the operation of each activity at any time period. For that part of system where performance is dictated by a random variable~ subjective probabilities are employed. Two stages of research were considered to formulate this model. Stage one involved the formulation of equipment sub-assemblies for the sequence of equipment moves along with related assignments and routines for information retrieval. The second stage of research combined all sub-assemblies into an integrated open pit mining simulator. The model is not tailored for any specific open pit operation but is readily adaptable to any system of surface mining including operations having a high degree of complexity. "After industrial sand has been mined and processed, the finished product is typically loaded into small bags of 45 kg (100 lb) or less, large bulk bags of 454 to 1,361 kg (1,000 to 3,000 lb), or vehicles such as trucks or trains for transport to end users. As the sand is being transferred and loaded, dust can be released into the work environment, potentially exposing workers to respirable crystalline silica. A number of control technologies have been developed and utilized in an effort to reduce dust liberation during loading operations. For bulk loading into trucks or trains, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated one of these technologies, the Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH), at two industrial sand processing plants. Results from these case studies show that the DSH reduced airborne respirable dust levels by 39 to 88 percent, depending upon the product size being loaded.IntroductionInhalation of respirable crystalline silica dust can lead to the development of silicosis, a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease. Once contracted, there is no cure for silicosis, so the goal is to prevent the development of the disease by limiting exposure to respirable dust containing crystalline silica at or below the exposure limit of 50 µg/ m3 recommended by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH, 2002). At industrial silica sand operations, the product contains high levels of crystalline silica, so effective control technologies are needed to minimize the respirable dust exposure of workers.NIOSH, in partnership with the Industrial Minerals Association–North America, published a dust control handbook (NIOSH, 2012) focused upon control technologies for industrial- mineral mining and processing operations. One chapter in this handbook discussed technologies for controlling dust liberated during bulk loading, including telescoping loading spouts, dust collection systems for loading spouts, enclosures for load-out areas and a newer technology known as Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH)."

During 1928 the United States consumed 73,270 long tons of virgin or primary tin, which was approximately 7.5 per cent more than the 68,198 long tons con¬sumed in 1927 and equaled 41 per cent of the world&apos;s production in 1928 (approximately 178,000 long tons). Consumers&apos; stocks amounted to 9,268 tons on January 1, 1928, and 8,587 long tons on December 31, 1928, a net reduction of 681 tons. In addition to the virgin tin accounted for above, 12,106 long tons of secondary metallic tin were used by manufacturers of tin products in 1928. These figures are the result of an inquiry addressed by the Bureau of Mines to manufacturers to determine the amount of metallic tin used by them; in reply, 1,307 establishments reported consumption in 1928. The distribution of the amount consumed by various uses, as shown in the allowing tabulation based on Bureau of Mines canvasses for 1927 and 1928 in comparison with consumption by uses reported by the War Industries Board for 1917, emphasizes the fact that new uses for tin have been developed in only minor or insignificant amounts. Furthermore, although the studies for recent years show that some older uses have been discontinued, the amounts involved were all small and insignificant. Variation in consumption from year to year parallels the fluctuations in demand for the already well-established tin products. For example, the manufacture of bearing metals and solders for motor cars and trucks required 19,000 tons in 1928 compared to 16,000 tons in 1927; the canning industry continues to require the greater portion of the tin plate and also much solder. Growth in the electrical and the more recently developed industries (aeroplane, refrigerators, radio, etc.), while affecting total consumption of bearing metals, solders, etc., has made little change in the proportions required for these basic methods of using tin.

"The distribution of the wettability of coals of different rank was determined by measurements of contact angles for individual particles. The contact angle was estimated from the equilibrium partitioning of a particle at the water/air interface. Using this technique contact angles were determined for a larger number of particles from a given sample and a frequency distribution of contact angle was obtained. The contact angle distribution was broad for all the coals tested with included an anthracite, a hvA bituminous and a sub-bituminous coal. In comparison, spherical particles of polymethylmethacrylaie gave a much narrower distribution. The distribution for irregular polyethylene particles was somewhat broader than that for the polymethylmethacrylate spheres but broader than that for the polymethylmethacrylate spheres but considerably narrower than that for coal. The broader wetting distribution for coal was attributed to differences in surface chemical properties.INTRODUCTIONA knowledge of the wetting properties of coals is very useful in coal cleaning by flotation and other processes in which separations are based on differential surface properties. The various methods available for measuring wetting characteristics include: contact angle, 1-2 time, time, 3-5 bubble attachment, 6 film flotation,7 displacement pressure, 8-9 penetration rate, 10-11 bubble pick-up, 12 induction time, 13 imbibition time, 14 and calorimetry. 15-16 Of all these methods, however, the measure¬ment of contact angle by the sessile drop and captive bubble techniques have been most widely used. Brady and Gauger"" demonstrated through the use of the contact angle method that the natural hydrophobicity of coal varied greatly from sample to sample. Subsequent experiments showed that this difference correlated well with rank, the larger contact angles generally being associated with the higher rank coals. 18-19 More recent studies by Aplan and co-workers' show that the wettability of various ranks of coals as determined by sessile drop and captive bubble methods is a more complex function of rank. The hydrophobicity of coal usually increases with rank up to about 80% fixed carbon (dmmf) and then decreases."

"While the National Academy of Sciences has stated that gravimetric sampling technology for compliance purposes is adequate, research into various aspects of respirable dust control require data on many other parameters of airborne dust. These, in turn, have created the need to use many instruments, other than personal gravimetric samplers, in mi ne environments for dust measurement. There is a need to evaluate the performance of these instruments under conditions of potential use.As part of research in the Generic Technology Center for Respirable Dust, cascade impactors, gravimetric personal samplers and gravimetric samplers collecting dust using isokinetic sampling principles were employed for dust measurements under identical conditions in a mine airway. During the course of the experiments, 8-stage cascade impactors and gravimetric samplers drawing air isokinetically were located in the center of a mine airway at various stations. Two types of data were examined - concentration of dust and size distribution of the dust collected in the samplers. The data show that the amount of dust collected by an impactor is less than half the amount collected isokinetically. The size distributions of the dusts collected from the two instruments, though comparable, show a consistent difference in median diameters. The cause for this bias is examined.The paper presents and discusses the results of the tests, including the concentrations and size distributions obtained from the two instruments for different experimental conditions. There is a need to document the performance of various dust measuring devices in mine airflow conditions.INTRODUCTIONThe sampling of airborne dust in mines can be done for several purposes. Traditionally, dust sampling has been restricted to the gravimetric measurement of airborne respirable dust to comply with the regulations governing the mining industry. Instruments such as the MRE gravimetric sampler, and personal gravimetric samplers that have collection characteristics similar to the human respiratory system have been in use for the last two decades. Presently available instrumentation for the purpose of regulation have been considered adequate by the Committee on the Measurement and Control of Respirable Dust in Mines (National Academy of Sciences, 1980),"

There is, as yet, no PEL recommended for diesel exhaust aerosol (DEA), nor is there a standard method for sampling this aerosol.The University of Minnesota and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have collaborated to develop a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS) which utilizes size-selective inertial impaction and gravimetric analysis. During the field tests of this sampler, numerous air quality measurements were made in underground coal mines that use diesel equipment.The mine mean DEA concentrations for the five mines surveyed, determined with the PDEAS in the haulageway, was 0.89 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.44 mg/m3. DEA contributed 52 % of the respirable aerosol at this location.In three of the mines filter samples were collected for DEA-associated polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and biological activity determinations. Two of the mines were also monitored for the major gaseous constituents found in diesel exhaust. In general, the PAH and biological activity levels were similar for all three mines, and indicate that up to 25 % of the haulageway concentrations may be contributed by outby diesel vehicles. Measured concentrations of CO, CO2. NO, NO2, and SO2, were well below regulated levels.INTRODUCTIONDiesel exhaust contains pollutant gases, such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and gas-phase hydrocarbons, as well as DEA. Much of the health-related concern focuses on DEA and associated organic compounds (Watts, 1992a). A wide variety of these PAHs have been identified and some are known carcinogens and/or mutagens. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has proposed new PELs for these and other contaminants (MSHA, 1989). MSHA has also published an advance notice of proposed rulemaking to establish a separate PEL for diesel particulate (MSHA, 1992)."

The most promising near-term alternative to fuel cell driven vehicles is probably Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV or EV) technology. HEV technology combines the best characteristics of fuel-driven engines, electric motor drives, and energy storage components. It is designed with a combustion engine that functions as the primary power source, and an electric power storage system that functions as the secondary power source. The presence of the secondary power source allows designers to size the combustion engine for cruising power requirements. A new energy source for HEV or EV market will become lithium ion batteries (LIBs) in the near future. LIBs for HEV or EV has large scale about more 10,000 times than small size one for IT devices in order to achieve high electric density/capacity and high efficiency, etc. In those reasons, physical treatment of the batteries is more difficult for stable dismantling in comparison with the smaller one. Hybrid vehicle sales will grow by nearly 400 percent during the next seven years, according to a new report from analyst firm ABI Research. By 2013 hybrids will make up 6 percent of annual U.S. auto sales. The traction battery pack will become air-cooled LIBs which consists of several modules of Li ion battery and connected in series/parallel configuration to provide about >450 VDC, >150 kW peak power, and >80 Ah capacity. As the use of these batteries tends to increase significantly for the next years, it is relevant issues that development of new recycling methods as well as optimization of existing processes to treat spent LIBs for HEV have being addressed in order to obtain sustainability. In this study, physical treatment containing stable electrical discharge of spent LIBs for HEV was carried out for recovery of valuable metals from the batteries. Also In order to increase the yield of valuable metals through physical treatments such as electric discharge of spent batteries, crushing, and classification, we also focused on the recovery of cobalt from +8 mesh fraction due to its large portion in crushed intermediates.

"Ribbon-growth-on-substrate is a casting method, which offers a possibility to control heat flow, nucleation and subsequent crystal growth at the liquid-substrate interface. This technology allows for low-cost and high throughput shaping of silicon sheets with controlled crystal grain size and orientation for use in solar cells. In this work, sheets of silicon- metal silicide composite materials were produced and their microstructure was studied. It was shown that depending on the relevant phase diagram and casting conditions, a micro/nano-sized eutectic structure of the casted sheet can be formed. Such composite materials possess properties promising for various applications in energy generation, storage and conservation. The advantages, potential and challenges of the ribbon-growth-on-substrate technique for production of composite sheet materials as well as novel areas of application for such materials are discussed.IntroductionThe Ribbon Growth on Substrates (RGS) process is well known in the solar industry as a process to produce multicrystalline silicon wafers. An industrial size pilot production line for continuous casting of silicon wafer was developed by RGS Development B.V. in the Netherlands (Figure 1). A comprehensive review of this technology and properties of the produced silicon wafers were reported by Schönecker et al [1]. The principle of the RGS process is explained in Figure 2. The relatively cold substrate extracts the crystallization heat from the liquid silicon in the casting frame. This results in the growth of a silicon ribbon (Vc) in contact with the substrate. When the substrate (Vp) is transported from the casting zone into the cooling section, the crystal growth stops, the wafer can be removed and the substrate can be re-used. Last few years large work was done on the industrialization and market development of RGS wafers for the solar industry. Part of this work was discussed by Schönecker et al [2]. Although there is still a good perspective on the middle and long term solar market for the RGS wafers, the current market situation was found to be unfavorable for new entrants."

THE following article covers the history of a metallurgical campaign, commenced in March, 1905, at the mines of the Socorro Gold Co., in the so-called desert region of Yuma county, Arizona. The results obtained were simply a function of necessity, as will be seen from the description of the local economic conditions and the character of the ores treated. The mines and mill of the Socorro Gold Co. are located near the small village of Harrisburg, about 60 miles from Congress Junction, Arizona, which, at the time this work was undertaken, was the nearest railroad station, and from which all supplies were brought by wagon through the desert, at a cost varying from $10 to $15 per ton in addition to the railroad freights. Wood, the only available fuel, cost $7 per cord. Water for all purposes was pumped to the plant from a well in the valley about 4 miles away. Under the Arizona law, a working-shift is 8 hr. Wages were $6 per day for foremen and mill-men, $4 per day for blacksmiths and engineers, $3.50 per day for miners, and $3 per day for shovelers and trammers. The ore consisted of quartz, in which, above the 250-ft. level, the iron-minerals were largely oxidized and some free gold was visible; below that level few traces of oxidation occurred, and pyrite constituted the principal mineralizer in the quartz, together with occasional pockets of galena and a few eccentric specks of covellite. The 20-stamp mill was equipped with plates for amalgamation, and three Standard tables for concentration. The tails from the tables were elevated by a centrifugal pump to a launder, by which they were conveyed to a 60-ton cyanide-mill for further treatment. The cyanide-mill was erected at so great a distance from the stamp-mill that a separate crew of workers and a separate power-plant were necessary. "8.1. IntroductionThe stoichiometry of most named platinum-group minerals (POM) is known (cf. Cabri, 1981b, in Chapter 7), but, because these minerals are subject to a wide range of element substitutions, representative analyses require treatment in a separate chapter (section 8.2). The analyses, in all cases done by electron microprobe, are grouped in sections according to the principal platinum-group element (POE) for each POM, and then follow sequentially with increasing amounts of the principal POE starting with the ideal composition, when known. In order to facilitate reference to specific POM by name, an alphabetical listing is also given (Table 8.1). A range of compositions, in addition to one or several ""representative"" analyses, is given for some POM when more than one analysis has been reported for a particular locality. The tables of POM analyses (Tables 8.2 to 8. 76) include at least one analysis for every locality for which data have been published, to the best of the authors' knowledge. All analyses are referenced for locality and publication source, and include several unpublished analyses (all but one done at CANMET). Most analyses have been rounded off to one decimal place for amounts more than one per cent and their formulae calculated on the basis of an even number of total atoms. In all tables, ''n.d.'' stands for elements sought for but not detected and a dash signifies elements not sought, or when these haven't been specificed in the publication source.Section 8.3 contains tabulated analyses and, in some cases, also includes a critical assessment of POE-bearing minerals in which the POE occur in trace or minor quantities. The organization of the data in this section is by mineral groups; e.g., sulphides, sulpharsenides, silicates, etc. Some of these data are also discussed in Chapter 4 by Crocket (1981) and are discussed briefly in Chapter 6 by Crocket and Cabri (1981)."

"Ecstall Mining is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Texas Gulf Sulphur at Timmins, Ontario. The mill tonnage is 10,000 tons per day of two different ores, a copper zinc ore and a silver lead zinc ore, producing about 2400 tons of concentrates per day. These are as a copper concentrate, a high silver zinc concentrate, a low silver zinc concentrate and a silver-lead concentrate. For flotation recovery a very fine grind is required, about 80% minus 325 mesh and the concentrates produced are 40% minus 10 microns.The thickened concentrates are pumped to the filter floor for filtering and drying. The filtering and drying section is separated from the flotation section by a wall and is controlled from a dryer control room by one operator.Two operating panels are located in this control room. One contains stop-start controls for the thickeners, filter motors and vacuum pump motors, and stop-start controls for dryer feed conveyors and dryer product conveyors to concentrate load-out bins, as well as ammeters for conveyor drive motors. Dryer throughput is regulated by Merrick Type L weightometers located on the dryer discharge conveyors and recorded on tons per hour strip charts.The second panel contains the temperature strip charts, furnace drive ammeters, scrubber and exhaust gas controls, burner controls and panel alarms for the four dryers.Filtered concentrates are dried in Nichols-Herreshoff, multiple hearth, dryers consisting of nine hearths (zinc) and seven hearths (copper and lead). There are two dryers for handling zinc concentrates and one each for copper and lead concentrates. The dryers are heated by burning natural gas. Each zinc dryer handles 1,000 t.p.d. and the copper and lead dryers 750 t.p.d. each.Multiple hearth dryers are unusual in the base metal mining industry and the reasons for selecting them in preference to rotary dryers are as follows:1) The concentrates could only be filtered to 15 to 17 percent moisture. These sloppy filter cakes would be extremely difficult to handle in rotary dryers."

The House Committee of the Engineering Societies Building has lent to he members of the three welfare committees a room on the ground floor of the building where they can carry on some of their war activities. Two sewing machines and two knitting machines are installed there and ladies are invited to sew for the Foreign War Relief Committee and knit for the Emergency Committee, which is working for the 27th Engineers, a special mining regiment. The Emergency Committee, Mrs. H. Norman Spicer, Chairman, reports the formation of a committed of 21 members. The organization meeting was held March 7, and plans were made for future activities as follows: A letter was read from Mr. Ingalls asking for 72 sweaters, 72 helmets, 66 pairs of wristlets as well as 772 pairs of socks, 272 being for immediate delivery. To meet this request it was decided to secure the helmets and wristlets from the Navy League, and to undertake the making of the sweaters and socks ourselves. Accordingly Mrs. H. N. Spicer and Mrs. J. H. Devereux were empowered to buy wool in sufficient quantities, and woven material for the 72 sweaters, sending the bills to Mr. Ingalls, who had guaranteed the money from the Engineering and Mining Journal. This was attended to promptly, and the materials were ready for distribution to the committee on March 13. After considerable difficulty, knitting machines for the socks were discovered and the agent came to demonstrate them. Mrs. Spicer gave one to the Committee and Mr. Ingalls has guaranteed the money to buy two when the manufacturers can deliver them. Up to April 6, 130 pairs of socks, machine and hand-knitted, have been handed in-also 68 sweaters, 80 helmets and 90 pairs of wristlets. It has been calculated that it needs five women knitting behind each man at the front to keep him continuously supplied with knitted garments.
