Planning for flooding and assessment of flood impacts are important requirements for mining projects, as they are also for other types of development. With more intense development and concern from the community, supported by government regulatory requirements, assessment of flood concerns and impacts has become of increasing importance. To ensure that flooding issues are fully understood and results presented in an appropriate format, advanced hydraulic analysis procedures have been developed and are beginning to be applied. These procedures must be rigorous in an engineering context but the results must also be readily understood by the community and government agencies. Advanced two-dimensional hydraulic modelling is becoming accepted as an important means of assessing flooding issues for mining projects. With presentation of results from hydraulic models with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), flood impacts can be analysed rigorously and presented clearly. This paper discusses the application of advanced hydraulic modelling in the planning and impact assessment of a major mining project located on a floodplain where there is extensive inundation. The analysis provides for both input to the planning of the project and for detailed assessment of potential impacts. This case study illustrates some important aspects of the application of hydraulic modelling using a two-dimensional modelling to a critical flood design.

Part 1: Description Of Geology & Reserves System Introduction The Ore Evaluation and Reserve programs have been developed to aid in the evaluation of coal deposits, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The "Weighted Moving Average" technique used provides considerable flexibility in dealing with diverse parameters with differing distribution characteristics. Determination of Model Constants "a" and "k" - Unit 1 The flexibility of the method in dealing with diverse value parameter distributions lies in its ability to cater to the individual characteristics of each. These characteristics are embodied in the values determined for constants "a" and "k", namely, local and regional variations in value distributions, respectively. The empirical method used attempts to optimize the "a" - "k" combination. Realistic values for "a" and "k" are entered into the program together with sample values for the required parameters and their respective coordinate location values. All the values within a specified radius from the point being evaluated are used to interpolate a value at that point. (Note, the interpolated point is the location of one of the boreholes, values of which are not used in the calcula¬tion.) 3n a similar manner, interpolated values are calculated for each borehole location and for each parameter. This is done for each possible combination of "a" and "k".

The Bureau of Mines investigated palygorskite, a natural asbestiform material, to accumulate knowledge that might serve as a foundation for future synthesis of a similar material. Unit cell, chemical analysis, DTA, TGA, optical constants, and electron microscopy data were obtained. Selected palygorskite samples of bettor than 97-percent purity were used to obtain this information. Chemical analysis revealed the following formula: (OH2)4 (OH)2 Ca0.01Fe0.02K0 .c3Mg2.10A12.00Si7.93020.3.91 H2O. The optical constants for sodium light are a = 1.522; S = 1.530; ?=1.533; biaxially (-). The following orthorhomibic unit cell constants were determined: ao = 12.690 A, Z = 2, bo = 17.857 A, Dx = 2.327. co = 5.207 A, Identical diffraction patterns resulted from the three palygorskite samples that were studied. X-ray, chemical, DTA, TGA, and optical data were compared with literature values for similar fibrous materials. X-ray diffraction lines were indexed. Several electron micrographs were made to compare the structures of palygorskite and attapulgite with that of chrysotile. The micrographs revealed extremely short laths for attapulgite, very long flexible laths for palygorskite, and tubular structure for chrysotile.

The article, as written, represents a short account of the treatment of the base bullion from the Broken Hill ores, as carried on at Port Pirie, for the recovery of lead, silver, and gold, and for the treatment of by-products. Appended is a short description of the chief facilities of plant which have been adopted to overcome the main difficulties in the refining of lead the Howard press and stirrer. The article is within the limit prescribed by the regulation for the prize offered by the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, comprising 30 pages, containing an average of about 200 words per page, exclusive of analyses, photographs, and sketches.The writer desires to thank those to whom he is indebted for their- kindness in affording him every facility possible to obtain the information which he required for the success of such a paper-viz., Messrs. Robertson, Leavens, and Gronow, of the Broken Hill Propritary Co. Limited, at Port Pirie, and Mr. Crowther, of the Adelaide School of Mines, to whom he is indebted for photographs. The difficulty of obtaining fair samples of gold drosses, and the inability to obtain particulars of fuel consumptions, prevents the paper from being as complete as one would wish. The limited length precludes detail, except in more important parts.

"The paper presents the engineering design and experience gained so far with a dewatering system for an open-pit uranium mine planned at Key Lake in Northern Saskatchewan.The results of hydrogeological investigations preceding engineering exhibit an extensive unconfined overburden aquifer hydraulically connected with the underlying Athabasca Formation and basement rocks, both of relatively low hydraulic conductivity. The overburden aquifer is embedded in a bedrock trough, with the deepest depression between the planned pits. The hydrogeological data were used in a numerical dewatering model simulating groundwater flow atdifferent stages of the pit development.Based on the model results, the engineering design had to provide for different pumping rates, varying between 1.0 and 0.21 ms/sec. This problem was solved by using a double line pressure system. The design concept for the complete peripheral discharge system and the well design used for 26dewatering wells are discussed.Experience with reverse-circulation techniques applied for the construction of the dewatering wells is presented. Theoretical and practical considerations which led to the constructionof wells of different diameters are discussed.The design of the in-pit dewatering system provides for seepage ditches, horizontal drains, pit-bottom sumps and inpit dewatering wells where required."

Traditional methods of project procurement of have remained virtually unchanged in the U.S. infrastructure construction industry for more than 50 years. The traditional method, Design-Bid-Build (DBB), uses a two-step process that separates planning and design from construction. Design is generally done by the public agency and their consultants and the subsequent construction contract is procured from the private sector, almost always by a “low-bid” approach. This method has worked well for many projects, delivering quality work for the lowest bid price. This is particularly true for those projects where the work, and the public agency’s management procedures, are well understood by the contracting community and there is relatively low uncertainty in the work or conditions, particularly geotechnical conditions for underground construction. However, concerns exist with the DBB process. It is time consuming because all planning and design work must be completed prior to beginning any construction work and it is of concern for complex or large projects, plus those with significant risk, where the separation of design and construction, in conjunction with pressures resulting from the low-bid environment, often result in substantial cost and schedule increases. Frequently, these increases occur in a non-productive, inefficient, adversarial work environment leading to claims, disputes and costly litigation (Quick 2002).

Abstract: To excavate oil-gas pipeline ditches in a rocky region or area the explosive method is needed. When a parallel ditch is to be dug by blasting near or in the vicinity of an existing pipeline, a safe criterion must be determined to ensure safety for the latter. In this investigation, with the construction of the second phase of the West-East Gas Pipeline Project, we carried out real blasting tests and numerical simulations to explore the safety criteria for the existing pipeline. Through this investigation, we obtained the safe strain elasticity threshold es2000µe, blast vibration velocity calculation formula, and the maximum vibration velocity Vmax=14cm/s(5.51in./s) for the pipe under blast shock loading, and worked out how to determine the charge size in the follow-up blasting excavation. These results can be used to determine the maximum explosive weight per delay and decide delays for the initiation circuit network in blasting a parallel pipeline ditch, and to make safety assessments for the existing pipeline in service. Having successfully been applied in the second and third phases of the West-East Gas Pipeline Project, China-Russia Oil Pipeline Project and China-Myanmar Gas Pipeline Project, these findings are very significant for other similar pipeline construction.

The heap leaching of base metal ores can be applied within a number of different scenarios, each requiring its own set of parameters to be determined during the metallurgical testwork programme. The occurrence of acid-gangue reactions and its concomitant precipitation reactions is a factor common to all cases, and requires that the optimal irrigation acid strength be found that optimises the combination of extraction kinetics, acid consumption and possible premature blinding of the heap due to precipitation reactions. For the heap bioleaching of base metal sulphide ores the oxygen requirement needs to be determined for the design of the aeration system, and the operating conditions employed need to also facilitate bacterial growth over and above the acid strength optimisation mentioned above. For the heap bioleaching of chalcopyrite, the need to preserve heat in the heap becomes yet a further parameter of critical importance. For the heap leaching of uranium ore a choice is required between either chemical or bacterial oxidation, based on economic and processing factors. Frequently the operating parameters need to be determined for a circuit in which heap leaching is combined with tank leaching and/or pressure leaching. The processing implications and metallurgical testwork approach for each case is discussed.

1. A NEW CONTEXT FOR METAL INDUSTRY Producers and owners of industrial extractive sites are living hard times due to Environmental pressure and liabilities. This is valid whatever the region in the world, it is just a question of time. On one hand, the normative environmental pressure is increasing through more severe regulations and controls on all pollution sources and production materials. [ ] Furthermore, more impurities are extracted and captured, more the volume of the related wastes is increasing. But disposal costs are increasing, disposal areas for wastes are restricted, markets for wastes are limited and technologies for waste treatment are, most of the time, not available. On the other hand, for most of the extractive industries, the costs required to get access to refine primary raw material are killing the profitability of the industry. Definitively, a technological and economical breakthrough is ongoing: extractive industries have to increase their feed from secondary material and to be involved more and more with the recycling business.

Australia is not capitalizing on the raw gems and precious minerals that it produces in abundance. In particular, there is an unrealised value for diamonds due to lack of processing after mining. Australia could enhance the value of its raw jewellery products by developing and integrated jewellery industry. For instance, initiation of a diamond industry would require training programmes to educate people in the requisite skills, such as diamond sorting, cleaving, sawing, bruting and polishing. Equally important would be the training of people in design jewellery, manufacturing, and appropriate diamond grading and sales techniques. Future technological advances in diamond processing will decide where the major diamond processing centres of the world will be. Australia, for a relatively small investment, could develop a highly productive diamond processing capacity using the new technology available. Australia's geographical position, and advanced banking and communication facilities provide the potential for this country to become a major trading centre for diamonds. Estimation of the cutter life and cost is a part of evaluating performance for a hard rock TBM in any project. Various approaches has been proposed for calculation of disc cutter life in various rock types based on machine specifications and rock strength and abrasivity. Cutter change time is a parameter that is used in some of the estimates and is defined as the average time required for changing a cutter on the cutter head and cutter life is the number of cubic meters of excavated rock per each disc cutter. Analysis of cutter life information of several tunnel projects from around the world has revealed that the published models for estimation of cutter consumption require some revisions to offer a more accurate prediction. The preliminary analysis of data shows that the average cutter change time is approximately 66 minutes for different cutter sizes and there is a minimal difference between corresponding cutter change times of the large (e.g. 19 or 20 in) versus smaller cutters (e.g. 15.5 to 17 in). This paper reviews the available and published cutter life data from various projects. It also introduces new models for estimation of cutter life and cutter change time as part of TBM down time and utilization analysis.

The future of the world's minerals industries is often painted as bleak. Peter Drucker has repeatedly proposed that the demand for minerals has become "uncoupled" from world economic growth.' This implies that, while mineral demand was in the past linked to the growing demand for and consumption of goods and services, further world development will not require substantial mineral inputs. Lester Thurow noted that for these reasons the US minerals industry is diminishing in scale and economic importance.2 There is some documented evidence of such uncoupling, and the demand for minerals may indeed diminish in the future. But such announcements are, to this point, no more than speculation. For instance, is it not just as likely that renewed environmental concerns will cause increased demand for the relatively innocuous environmental properties of metals, replacing plastics? And even if the prophesied demand decreases do occur, a sufficient fall in metal prices due to technological advances could increase the quantity of minerals demanded above current levels, in spite of leftward shifting demand curves. Thus, worldwide mineral production activity may increase or decrease in the future and no one can say whether more or fewer of the earth's citizens will become involved in the extraction and processing of minerals.

Determining ventilation system model inputs from the field test work has been produced in the working oil shale mine which has been in production since the early 1970s. At this mine room-and-pillar with drill-and-blast methods are used. The mine has a complicated ventilation system to supply fresh air for the eight mining production areas on the radius of about 12 km. The main purpose of the experimental test works was to obtain data for estimation of an optimum cross-section area for a new ventilation shaft. Experimental test works included measurements of air volume and fan pressure using five different modes of intake air through the ventilation shafts system. Measurements of airway friction factors were obtained during the ventilation surveys to determine characteristic friction factors for the intake airway. The results of the measurements will be used for further air flow simulation processes required for design of new additional ventilation shafts in the oil shale mine. Results of the study can be useful in estimation of frictional pressure drop in oil shale mine conditions.CITATION:Sabanov, S, 2017. Environmental desulphurization is an attractive alternative for the management of acid generating tailings. Bulk sulphide flotation is the most commonly used method to produce desulphurized tailings, as shown from many previous works. This process can reduce the volume of problematic tailings to manage by making a sulphide fraction concentrate. The desulphurized tailings can then be used as construction material for an engineered cover to prevent acid mine drainage. In this paper, the results from different laboratory and pilot scale flotation tests are presented. These results confirm that low sulphide non-acid generating tailings can be produced by froth flotation. It is also demonstrated that sulphide concentrates obtained from desulphurization mixed with the appropriate binders can be used as feed material for paste backfill. From previous work on the evaluation of operating and capital costs of the desulphurization process for different ore types, the use of desulphurization as a tailings management approach was studied for several scenarios. The desulphurization process was then compared with other technologies (underwater disposal, engineered soil cover) currently used to prevent acidic drainage (AD) for a new mining operation. Results show that partial or total desulphurization are technically and economically viable options to manage tailings during mine operation. Mine waste managers should consider desulphurization as an efficient technology.

In New South Wales, development applications for major coal mining proposals are determined by the Minister for Planning and Environment and applications for mining leases and other mineral titles are dealt with by the Minister for Mineral Resources. The environmental conditions placed on the development consent, the coal mining lease and the approvals and licences under the pollution control legislation, amount to a substantial component of any new project's planning and commissioning considerations.An outline is presented of the framework within which various approvals are granted and conditions for environmental management are imposed upon mining projects. The principles and concerns, as perceived by the regulatory authorities, on which the majority of approval conditions are based are also outlined.No attempt has been made to analyse the extent to which these principles or standards are achieved in practice, nor to discuss the degree to which some of the conditions are achievable with the current status of technology and economics in the coal industry.

Societal expectations about how the industry operates and treats its people will be a key driver in the development of the Australian mining industry over the next 20 - 30 years (Moffat, Mason and Littleboy, 2009). Understanding these expectations will be critical in maintaining what much of the minerals industry calls its 'social licence to operate', or its public acceptance or approval. Yet what constitutes this social licence is poorly articulated, with little published research exploring the concept at a local operational level or at the national level in Australia or internationally. This research aimed to explore the societal expectations of the mining industry in Australia and test a participatory methodology to articulate them. Three workshops were conducted with a sample of 24 members of the 'Australian voting public' to explore community objectives for the onshore exploration and mining industry, and the underlying expectations for how the industry should operate in the future. Qualitative analysis of this data revealed three overarching objectives for the onshore mining industry held by participants. They thought that the industry should: advance Australia's national interests (including social well-being); minimise environmental impact, and; act in a socially responsible manner. Within each of these three key themes, or objectives, a number of tensions were evident in the views of participants regarding the trade-offs they are willing to make to secure economic benefit from mining, as well as the basic conditions for socially acceptable mining. These data provide an insight into the conditions for a national social licence in Australia for the mining industry, and the means for its realisation.

More than a decade ago, CANMET management recognized the need to make better use of existing technological information in mining and extractive metallurgy-two fields basic to the economic well-being of Canada. There were at that time no indexes or files dedicated to disseminating technical information for the many minerals mined and processed in Canada, including coal. CANMET, with the nation's largest research and library resources in the minerals field, was in a unique position to fill this need. Initial efforts were concentrated on building a mining file, beginning with identification of world sources of published information, development of a special thesaurus of terms for language control and adoption of a manual indexing/retrieval system. By early 1973, this file held 8,300 references, with source, abstract and keywords given for each reference. In mid-1973, operations were computerized. Software for indexing and retrieval by batch mode was written by CANMET staff to utilize the hardware facilities of EMR's Computer Science Centre. The resulting MINTEC file-one of the few files of technological information produced in Canada-is the basis for the national literature search service in mining offered by CANMET. Attention is now focussed on building a sister-file in extractive metallurgy using the system already developed. Published information sources have been identified and a thesaurus of terms is being compiled and tested. The software developed for CANMET's file-building operations has several features, including the selective dissemination of information and production from magnetic tape of photo ready copy for publication, as in a bi-monthly abstracts journal.

The material origin of various plastics, methods of manufacturing and specifications applied to leaching solutions are discussed, including availability and costs. Examples of select plastics are considered for use as alternatives of other materials under severe environmental requirements.IntroductionHydrometallurgical processes applied to gold recovery, as well as other metals, require the use of strong solutions of alkaline, acidic or organic nature, and may also include a variety of materials with extraneous characteristics and complications for handling in storage.The technology of leaching has been in use for more than 100 years, but the applications of leaching processes in metallurgy have become more commonly used in the last 15 years. Suitable materials for the construction of containers, launders, piping, and various accessories, to be used in the handling of leach solutions or slurries, have become a serious problem. Various metals such as brass, lead, stainless steel, etc., and non metallics including wood, clays, glass, rubber, ooncrete, tars or miscellaneous compounds have been tried in the past with serious limitations in workability and resistance to wear and corrosion. High-grade iron ore may be derived from banded iron formation (BIF) through four fundamentally different processes:1. syngenetic precipitation of chert free BIF,2. residual enrichment by removal of gangue minerals from BIF to form bedded (residual) ironore,3. mechanical erosion of iron oxide and chert from bedded iron ore or BIF and re-deposition andupgrading as detrital iron ore, and4. chemical removal of iron from BIF and precipitation elsewhere as a secondary (channel) irondeposit.Finally, the BIF itself may constitute iron ore if a high-grade concentrate utilised for pellets or sinters can be derived from it through mechanical (industrial) separation of iron oxide by means of crushing/milling and mineral separation.Historically, exploration for high-grade BIF hosted iron ores was focused on the residual (bedded) deposits and driven by supergene concepts. Exploration for detrital and channel type iron ores was mostly secondary to exploration for bedded deposits, but recently, a more focused exploration effort has led to the discovery of enormous moderate to low iron grade deposits in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Exploration for high-grade iron ores using syngenetic concepts has been limited,but together with exploration using hypogene concepts offers the best hope of fi nding concealed deposits. Exploration for BIF sources suitable for concentrate ores commenced in the ‘old’ iron ore provinces after the high-grade resources were depleted and has only recently gained importance in Australian BIF provinces, mainly as a result of high iron ore prices in the last decade.
