The Bureau of Mines investigated the application of a diffusion model to sintering rate data developed for lithium titanium ferrite. The data were obtained by sintering pressed pellets under identical conditions for various times up to 11 hours. Stereological measurements were made on polished sections, and sintering rates were calculated. A model for intermediate stage sintering was fitted to the stereological data. This procedure produced a method by which these type data could be used to study the relative importance of volume and grain-boundary diffusion under a variety of sintering conditions.

Ore reserves are inadequately defined. Geological reconnaissance and pre-feasibility mining work generate a broad range of valid tonnage estimates, many published for the benefit of various interests, who may view all figures as reserves. This work reviews the regular estimation of tonnages, grades and relevant factors for single deposits. A consistent framework of definition is suggested which, by conforming to the known structures of feasibility studies and long-range plans, avoids the pitfalls of over-categorisation and of unrealistic promises. Legislation and Government Programs.-The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) accepted written comments until July 23, 1976, and held an informal hearing on August 24, 1976, to receive oral testimony regarding an economic and inflation impact statement prepared by OSHA on the proposed standard for occupational exposure to inorganic arsenic. These written and oral submissions were to be used in conjunction with information supplied at 1975 hearings to promulgate emission standards. An in-depth study for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) assembled and interpreted comprehensive information on arsenic and its compounds and the effects of these substances on people, animals, and plants.2 Another study for EPA assessed the role of arsenic and its compounds in the environment and in the economy of the United States and evaluated the need for and the projected effect of controlling its production, use, dissipation, and emission.3

This paper describes some of the results of a project for the design and demonstration of subsidence monitoring systems for underground coal mines. The project was designed to test monitoring systems described in an earlier feasibility report (O'Rourke and others, 1979). General objectives of the project were to develop reliable cost- effective monitoring systems for use above caving- type mining operations, over supported mines, and in urban undermined areas. Topics selected for discussion in this paper include a description of the instrumentation systems, the site conditions, problems of installation, resulting recommendations and an over- view of subsidence performance data obtained. There were some particularly difficult problems of installation to overcome at this site. Some of these could be experienced at any surface or under- ground project, others are probably more directly related to Western coal fields. "Accounting for changing duty cycles in equipment matching maximizes equipment utilization and productivity. The objective of this study is to investigate if the optimal number of shuttle cars for a particular panel width is optimal in different segments of the panel. In this study, discrete event simulation (DES) is used to determine the optimal number of cars that maximizes productivity in each segment. Data from a real-life mine is used to validate the model. The study shows that the optimal number of cars for the entire panel may not be optimal for some of the defined segments. INTRODUCTION Fleet optimization is important for efficient mine management. Deploying the optimal fleet minimizes the capital and operating expenditure for particular operating conditions and production targets. In an operating mine, with an already existing fleet, deploying the optimal fleet maximizes productivity or minimizes production cost with the available resources. Hence, a lot of research has focused on how to determine the optimal fleet size for a mining operation, given particular operating conditions. Mine managers and engineers have successfully used discrete event simulation (DES) to determine the optimal fleet size in mines (Michalakopoulos, Roumpos, Galetakis, & Panagiotou, 2015; Awuah-Offei, Osei, & Askari-Nasab, 2011; Ben-Awuah, Kalantari, Pourrahimian, & Askari-Nasab, 2010; Govinda Raj, Vardhan, & Rao, 2009; Yuriy & Vayenas, 2008; Kwame Awuah-Offei, Temeng, & Al-Hassan, 2003). In most cases, the published work on this topic involves determining the number of hauling units to be matched to a loading unit. Many of these examples involve truck-shovel optimization. There are, however, some underground mining examples. For instance, we recently concluded work that involves fleet optimization in underground room and pillar (R&P) coal mining (Awuah-Offei & Anani, 2015). Generally, when DES is used in fleet optimization it involves three steps: (1) Build a valid model of the mining system capable of predicting the required outputs with varying fleet composition; (2) Design and conduct experiments that vary the fleet composition across all feasible options; and (3) Determine the optimal fleet based on the results of the simulation experiments. A major decision in the first step is which outputs should be modeled. Some examples in the literature include productivity, unit cost, loader utilization, queue length, and hauler waiting times (Awuah-Offei et al., 2011; Govinda Raj et al., 2009; Kwame Awuah-Offei et al., 2003). Often, more than one of these outputs are simulated and considered as the objective function of the optimization."

"The angle of draw (in Germany, referred to as Limit Angle) plays a significant role in the field of mining subsidence engineering. This applies both to the assessment of the affected area by underground mining activities as well as applied methods for the prediction of ground movements.Recent observations using remote sensing show that ground movements outside the affected area defined by the angle of draw have been detected in German hard coal mining. Since the affected area by underground mining activities also plays an essential role regarding claims of landowners with damages to their houses and infrastructures, possible solutions for limiting the size of the affected area will be presented in this paper.Ground movements which exceed the affected area of an underground coal mine, as defined by the angle of draw will be shown in an exemplary manner. Present knowledge indicates an expectation that ground movements outside the affected area will not cause damage of major significance.This paper outlines the consequences for all affected parties regarding ground movements due to underground coal mining that exceed the extent of the area defined by the currently assumed angle of draw. This will be visualized in a case study.INTRODUCTIONGermany has a long tradition of coal mining, especially in the mining area of the Ruhr district. Following a long period of mining activity, the area is now highly populated and densely developed. In such an environment, it is of utmost importance to calculate and predict ground movements initiated by mining activities; therefore, the research here focused on the prediction of ground movement for the last decades. Special attention was given to the development of accurate ground movement models, which can be utilized in all mining areas. These models are based on different influencing factors such as depth of mining, worked thickness and the angle of draw.Depending on these models, the mining companies calculate the area of land subsidence; the predicted results are used for financial calculations and planning. For structures on top of zones with a high risk of deformation, structural measures can be applied, construction warnings can be given and, in cases of damage, compensation can be planned. The technical and economic planning was performed for all areas of mining subsidence. The most important factor for the outer limits of mining subsidence is the angle of draw (Ger. Grenzwinkel), which plots the border of the area of mining subsidence."

"During the period 1958-1980 seven deep shafts were sunk from the surface in the UK. From 1977 until 1989 sixteen deep shafts were sunk in the UK, all concrete lined. Subsequently from 1989 up to the present day no deep shafts have been sunk in the UK, a period of 30 years. Developments in the design and construction of deep shaft linings in the UK therefore were predominantly carried out throughout the period 1977–1989. This knowledge is recorded in several published papers by the author over that period which will be referred to in the paper. INTRODUCTION The paper includes a review of past precedent for the design of deep shaft concrete linings in the UK and sets out the principles for future designs, including the design load to be adopted and Factors of Safety (SFs) to be used in the design. Hydrostatic pressure increases with depth from the surface and therefore the concrete lining must increase in thickness and strength throughout its depth to resist the pressure. High strength concrete mixes were developed to enable economic linings to reach greater depths and these will be detailed. The ground conditions to sink through in the UK consist of predominantly competent (self-standing when excavated) rock, which can be water bearing, and hence a hydrostatic pressure resisting lining is required. The paper describes the construction measures needed to produce a dry shaft by way of pour length, joint detail, backwall grouting and joint sealing details. PAST PRECEDENT FOR UK DEEP SHAFT SINKING AND LINING Seven deep shafts were sunk from the surface in the UK from 1957–1977 over a 20-year period (Auld, 1987). These are listed in Table 1. Three shafts were for British Coal, two were for Cleveland Potash Ltd and two were for the Central Electricity Generating Board. The British Coal shafts were 5.486 m and 7.315 m internal diameter to depths of 550 m and 780 m, respectively. At 5.5 m internal diameter and a depth of 1150 m, the two Boulby Mine shafts for Cleveland Potash Ltd are currently the deepest shafts in the UK. The two Central Electricity Generating Board shafts of 5 m and 10 m internal diameter, to depths of 255 m and 440 m, respectively, were ventilation shafts for a pumped storage scheme. Six of the shafts were sunk by Thyssen (GB) Ltd and one by Cementation Mining Ltd."

"For the Hollywood International Airport Runway Expansion Project at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the structural fire durability analysis was completed for a series of tunnels formed by roadway and railroad cells located under the runway structure. A systematic design approach was developed to mitigate structural damage during a fire event and arrive at a practical method to structural fire engineering that is compliant to NFPA 502. To ensure the NFPA 502 requirements are satisfied, the performance based approach was implemented and the engineering analyses were performed for the adopted design fire event. The analyses considered the facility’s unique features including its fire safety systems to determine applicable design fire curves for structural durability analyses. The paper also outlines the process of defining the project specific fire curves for a specific design fire scenario and summarizes the results of heat transfer and structural fire durability analyses. This approach was aimed to assist the owner and Authority Having Jurisdiction to achieve practical decisions to the tunnel facility fireproofing.INTRODUCTIONFort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in Broward County, Florida is a major hub facility serving more than 23 million passengers annually. As part of the Airport Expansion Program, the South Runway (9R-27L) Expansion project aimed to meet ever increasing service demands via an increase to runway lengths. This necessitated the placement of one of the reconstructed runways on bridge structures over the existing U.S. Route 1 (US 1), a major north–south U.S. Highway that serves the East Coast of the United States, and the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway, thus effectively creating multiple tunnel cells beneath the subject runway. For this project, HNTB suggested a tunnel fire damage mitigation system that would protect the runway major structural elements from the design fire event that may happen within the tunnel cells. This paper addresses the issues related to the fire event originating within the tunnel encompassing the US1 highway only, and deals with requirements of NFPA 502 [5] exclusively. Therefore, while approaching the structural fire protection issues for the specific tunnel cells beneath the runway structure, the requirements of the American National Standard NFPA 502 (Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways, 2008 edition) were followed. "Electric arc furnace (EAF) stainless steel dust has been classified as a hazardous waste by various government regulatory agencies as it releases heavy metals to environment. The solidification of EAF dust is to stabilize the hazardous components to the amorphous silica-alumina-based clays. The process of solidification is investigated and the softening temperatures of dust and additive clay mixtures are measured for economical thermal treatment. The results indicate that the mixture of dust and local clay with the ratio of 1:1 has the lowest softening temperature 1100 °C and it could pass the toxicity characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP) test for the environmental regulatory limits after thermally treated at softening temperature for 15 min. Major phases of thermal solidification product clinker are CaAl2Si2O8, (Fe, Cr)2O3, (Fe, Mg)(Cr, Al)2O4 and Al6Si2O13.IntroductionThe yield of stainless steels in China arrived to 10 million tons in 2006 and more than 0.2 million tons of stainless steel dust are produced annually. Approximately 1-2 wt.% of scrap charged to an electric arc furnace (EAF) enters the off-gases and then is converted into the dust and reported to the bag-house. The disposal or landfill of the dust becomes a serious environmental problem in China due to the increased production of stainless steels in recent years. The dust contains elements such as chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd) and their solubility in leaching media exceeds the environmental regulatory limits [1]. Even though easily feasible for low-grade MgO, it is not appropriate to stabilize the heavy metals from the heavily contaminated soils after the dust landfill [2]. Several dust treatment technologies have been developed and they can be divided into two types. One is to recover the metals from the dust [3, 4] and another is to stabilize hazardous components present in the dust [5, 6]. Recycling of the dust generated in EAF is a remediation option for cleaner production. Direct recycling of EAF stainless steel dust was developed to recover the metal value from the dust and protect the environment [7], but it was only suitable for the dust with high contents of Ni, Cr and Fe. As for the dust with low valuable metal content, thermal solidification is an appropriate choice for the dust treatment."

"Agglomeration processes and agglomerate characteristics are largely controlled by the forces of interaction between particles. The nature and typical magnitude of these interaction forces are evaluated relative to the external forces commonly present in agglomeration systems. The specific roles of the interaction forces in the various stages of agglomerate formation and growth and their effects on the integrity and mechanical strength of agglomerates are briefly reviewed. Because the interaction forces affect different aspects of agglomerate development in different ways, conflicting requirements can arise. Examples of such conflicts are given and used to demonstrate the importance of evaluating the effects of interaction forces etc., in the context of the overall agglomeration process and its ultimate objectives.INTRODUCTIONThe term agglomeration is generally used to refer to processes whereby discrete particles are caused, or allowed, to associate into clumps in which the individual particles retain their identity but are held together by relatively weak, usually physical forces. Various other designations are given to these processes, depending on the specific circumstances under which agglomeration occurs. The terms balling and pelletizing are often used to describe agglomeration in dry or semi-dry powders; coagulation and flocculation are used to refer to agglomeration of particles dispersed in fluids. Common to all of these cases is the fact that the formation, growth and integrity of the agglomerates depend primarily on the forces acting on and between particles. The same forces are, of course, responsible for manyaspects of the behavior of colloidal systems and their study and evaluation constitute the,basis for colloid and interface science.FORCES ACTING ON FINE PARTICLES AND AGGLOMERATES It is convenient to classify the forces acting on and between particles into two general types: external forces and interaction forces. It should he recognized, however, that a sharp distinction is not always possible.External Forces Gravity and inertial forces act on all particles and their magnitude is proportional to particle mass, i.e. they vary with the cube of particle size. Such forces are oftensignificant for large agglomerates but may be negligible for individual, fine particles.Hydrodynamic (""drag"") forces are important, for particles suspended in fluids. For very small particles, the drag force is directly proportional to size (Stokes' Law) while for very large particles or agglomerates it varies with approximately the square of size (Newton's Law). A useful procedure for estimating drag forces over a broad range of particle sizes and physical conditions has been given by Concha (1)."

Australian underground mines produce in excess of 60 mtpa of coal. Most of these use the longwall method, and they require the use permitted explosives (which are called “permissible” in other countries) for challenges that appear during the day-to-day activities. To obtain the approval for these explosives, they should pass Testing Memorandum #2 (TM-2), which sets out the test required for each category of permitted explosive. These categories are P1, P3, and P5. With P5 being unrestricted use and P3 and P1 have conditional use in underground mines. The TM-2 test was originally set up for NG-based permitted products around 1900. With the closing of NG plants around the world, ammonium nitrate explosives were the natural replacement, and therefore these explosives need to pass the TM2. Australia does have a P1-emulsion based explosive available. For high-risk scenarios (like blasting coal), no P5 explosives are available. The lack of P5 explosives has been prolonged for more than 25 years, since the phasing out of nitroglycerine-based permitted explosive products around the world. The main problem has been that when emulsion based permitted products are tested in the deflagration cannon, the results obtained were not considered in the TM2 criteria and therefore the tests were invalid. A research work on permitted explosives began in 2005 funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP). The aim of the project was to address the lack of P5-type permitted explosive (and, potentially develop them further, i.e., develop safer explosives) and understand the behaviour of emulsion explosive and the results they presented in the tests. Both bureaucratic and technical barriers appeared along the way. On the bureaucracy side, the facility was shut down, reopened, and shut down again. In view of these difficulties, assistance was sought overseas. On the technical side, from the very start the results of the tests when using emulsion-based permitted explosives were not established in the criteria, ignitions occurred for trial samples that were expected to be P5-type, etc. The aim of this document is to present the painful journey in the Australian industry to have a P5-type emulsion-based permitted explosive, for use in UG coal. Also, the technical learning acquired about emulsion explosives and the ignition path of mixtures methane / air will be shown.

"Communities near sand mines and processing facilities in Wisconsin have raised concerns regarding possible exposure to ambient respirable (PM4) crystalline silica. Fenceline PM4 (particulate matter captured with a 50 percent cut size of 4 micrometers aerodynamic diameter) crystalline silica concentration data were compiled at Fairmount Santrol Inc., Mathy Construction Inc. and U.S. Silica facilities. The long-term average PM4 crystalline silica concentrations ranged from 0.05 to 0.45 micrograms/m3 when sample values below the limit of quantification were treated as zeros. All of the long-term average concentrations were less than 20 percent of the Minnesota Department of Health’s and California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment’s PM4 crystalline silica chronic reference exposure level of 3.0 micrograms/m3. The measured concentrations were consistently within the local background concentration range.Air Control Techniques P.C. compiled the sampling data using Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. Partisol 2000i PM2.5 samplers meeting the requirements of 40 CFR Part 50, Appendix L. These samplers were adapted to capture particulate matter with a 50 percent cut size of 4 micrometers. The use of polyvinyl chloride filters allowed for crystalline silica X-ray diffraction analysis by NIOSH Method 7500. The combined use of adjusted PM2.5 filter-based samplers with Method 7500 crystalline silica analyses provided for a highly sensitive limit of quantification of 0.31 micrograms/m3 of PM4 crystalline silica.BackgroundIn 2005, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA, 2005) adopted a 70-year chronic reference exposure level (REL) for PM4 (particulate matter having aerodynamic diameter of 4 micrometers or less) crystalline silica. The REL was extrapolated from occupational hygiene epidemiological studies, essentially all of which were based on in-plant PM4 crystalline silica measurements. No well-established ambient sampling technique for PM4 crystalline silica was available at the time that OEHHA adopted its REL. The personal samplers used for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Method 0600 in-plant sampling of employee exposure were designed for concentrations higher than ambient levels. The limit of quantification (LOQ) of PM4 crystalline silica on NIOSH 0600 filters was too high for the effective sampling of ambient air."

"The DIOS process has been developed for eight years since 1988. The research project was started with the element studies carried out by each of the five integrated steel making companies in Japan, the final two and half years were spent for the pilot plant studies. Operation were conducted in the entirely closed and pressurized system successfully as planned. From the result, the DIOS process was proved to be viable as a future iron-making process substitutable for the conventional blast furnace. In addition, a lot of findings were obtained. Hot metal productivity was primarily determined by a oxygen flow rate, and a coal consumption varied depending on the productivity. The post combustion ratio was a little lower than expected from the result of the element study. It was supposed to relate the gas-reforming with coal or volatile matter in the free space of the furnace. Hot metal carbon content seemed to depend on the char content in slag.INTRODUCTIONThe JISF's DIOS pilot plant (DIOS=Direct Iron Ore Smelting Reduction Process) has finished its last campaign of the operations in January 1996. The project was started in 1988 as a joint research of the Center for Coal Utilization, Japan and the Japan Iron and Steel Federation (JISF) with a subsidy for promoting coal productions and utilization technologies from the Agency of National Resources and Energy, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry(MITI). Throughout the pilot plant test, a total of over 20,000 tons of hot metal was produced for more than 2,000 hours of the operation. Recorded production rate was 538 ton/day for 3 days at a specific coal consumption of approx. 1,000kg/hmt. Long-term operation was carried out in the fifth campaign for 18 days, which has proved that the entirely closed and pressurized DIOS process works well as planned. In Figure 1 is shown the representative operational performance obtained in the first five campaigns. The project is going to be finished by the end of March this year after investigating the technical viability and economic potential of the process, and completing the conceptual design of the DIOS commercial plant. In this paper, the system and facilities of the DIOS process are first introduced and some of the results of the pilot plant test are detailed later."

WHEN during the war the Navy Department decided to build an armor-plate and gun-forging plant of its own at South Charleston, W. Va., one of the most important units of the equipment proposed was a 14,000 gross ton forging-press to be used for forging, bending, and rectifying battleship armor-plate and making hol¬low forgings for large caliber guns. A press suitable for doing this kind of work was put into operation in the fall of 1921 and was operated successfully on armor-plate and large forgings until the closing down of the ordnance plant following the Limitation of Armament Conference held in Washington, February, 1922. PURPOSE OF THE PRESS There are three methods by which armor-plate can be made, namely, hammering, forging, and rolling the ingot. Each method produces a different result in the mechanical working of the steel. The hammer was eliminated as impractical from an operating standpoint. The first armor-plate made in this country was worked under a hammer at the Bethlehem Steel Co., between the years 1891 and 1893, but was superseded by forging when the large press was completed in 1893. Harry T. Morris of the Bethlehem Steel Co. informs me that the 1.25-ton steam hammer began operations in 1891 and was in operation for about two years. The Carnegie Steel Co. and the Midvale Steel and Ordnance Steel Co. also forged armor-plate. Certain European manufacturers rolled the plates from large slab ingots, after removing the sink-head and giving the body of the ingot a light pass under a hydraulic press. While rolling accomplished more mechanical work on the surface of an armor plate, forging, on the other hand, resulted in a greater amount of work in the interior of the plate. Either type of equipment involved an enormous expendi¬ture, so it was deemed advisable to adopt the method which would make it possible to use the equipment for more than one purpose. Since g large rolling-mill could be used only for the single operation of rolling armor-plate, a press was decided on, for the reason that it might be designed so as to forge armor, as well as bend and rectify it, and also be used in the forging of ingots for large caliber guns, both in the form of hollow forgings and also solid shafts.

If it was all so clear I would not have been "asked" to write this article. For those of us on the contractors’ side of the fence, joint venture business relationships have been a part of life for a long time. But even for contractors, there can be a bit of confusion, and it normally begins on bid day.How often have you received bid results and wondered (out loud, usually), "Who the hell are the Lake Mead Intake Constructors"? or the "Regional Connector Constructors"? Once you get past the name, you see that there is nothing behind Oz’s curtain other than a couple of contractors bidding and building work in an attempt to make a profit. So take a few minutes to read the rest of this, and I’ll do my best to dispel a few mythWhat is a joint venture?In some form or fashion, joint ventures are as old as industry itself. In the United States, some of the earliest (and largest) joint ventures involved the railroads and oil companies in the late 1800s. In the United States’ underground construction industry, joint venture names such as, Healy-Greenfield, Green and Winston, Gates & Fox and Walsh, Shea-Ball, Kenny-Paschen and S&M-Traylor bring back memories of successful joint ventures that operated over many projects.There are nearly as many definitions for joint ventures (JVs) as there are attorneys. A short and simple definition is, "an association of two or more companies engaged in a singular, for-profit business enterprise without actual partnership or incorporation." That’s it. Two or more contractors decide to partner up for one or more projects. One benefit of the JV relationship is that the partners typically do not need to file incorporation documents, or articles of organization within the state where they intend to operate. So it is a relatively easy business arrangement to pull together. Other benefits of the JV arrangement include: • Oportunities to gain new expertise and capacity.• The ability for firms to move into new geographic markets.• JV agreements are not long-term commitments.• Sharing of financial support for a project.• Sharing of financial risks within a project. between the partners.• Can complicate dispute resolutions with the owner and between partners"

"Selection of the optimum support system for underground openings such as tunnels is a complex process. In this paper a new approach, based on a combination of the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) and the Preference Ranking Organization METHod for Enrichment Evaluations (PROMETHEE), is introduced. For this purpose, the selection process is assumed to be a multi criteria decision-making problem. First different support systems using FLAC3D numerical code, based on technical safety and stability parameters of the tunnel are specified. Then taking economic and performance parameters as the decision criteria by using the combination of Al-IP, TOPSIS, and PROMETHEE the optimum support system is selected. As a real mine case study this approach is used in the main access entry to the C, coal scam of Tabas collieries. Results clearly demonstrate that the proposed support system selection method is more advantageous than other alternatives.INTROD CTIONGenerally, the support system for a tunnel is selected primarily with the aid of design engineers experience. In other words personal judgment instead of intellectual and scientific criteria is mostly the main basis (Oracc. 2005). However since various support systems can be applied in any particular situation, accurate selection of the optimum support method depends on the integration of many technical, economical and performance parameters, and also on the analysis of the intensity of influence by each of the criteria.In this paper an applicable approach for se lection of tunnel support systems based on Multi Attribute Decision Making (MADM) techniques including: Al IP (Orace et al.. 2009a; Saaty, 1980), TOPSIS (Hwang and Yoon, 1981: Yoon and Hwang, 1995), and PROMETHEE (Brans and Vincke. 1985; Brans and Mareschal. 1992) is introduced. As a field study, this approach was applied to tunnel C1 as one of the main entries in the Tabas coal mine which is the major collieries in the central pan of Iran (Hosseini, 2008).Due to the coal seam conditions coal is mined by mechanized longwall mining (Hosseini 2008). This method requires the 58 excavation of several entries some of which will be used for many years and even for the entire life of the mine (Peng, 2006). Therefore the selection of the support system in these entries is·very important in mining design."

The Government of India started its deep seabed exploration programme during 1982. This programme was started as one of national importance and several national laboratories were involved to realize the development of requisite technologies for deepsea mining and processing. After a concentrated effort on surveying, using its own as well as hired ships, India succeeded by mid 1980s in identifying a prospective site in the Indian Ocean as an exclusive claim for development. India was registered as a Pioneer Investor and became the first country to obtain this status on 17th August 1987. India has been allocated an exclusive mine site of 150,000 km2 in the Central Indian Ocean. Our country also developed considerable expertise in the metallurgical processing for extracting metals from these nodules. The Department of Ocean Development, Government of India, the organization which is designated as the nodal agency responsible for implementing the deep seabed mining programme has drawn up a long term plan which will enable it to fulfill its obligations as a Pioneer Investor. The work toward the design and development of a mining system has been entrusted to the Central Mechanical and Engineering Research Institute, Durgapur. As a part of this programme they have developed a nodule collector and a riser system which have been tested in very shallow waters only. Since this technology development for deep sea mining applications is highly time consuming and very expensive, this programme is also being used to develop components for intermediate applications. In view of the long timeframe required for perfecting a deepsea nodule mining technology, the Government of India is also keen on developing shallow water mining systems for utilizing the placer deposits. One of the richest heavy mineral deposits in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone is available on the west coast of South India in the state of Kerala. The coastal stretch between Kanyakumari, on the southern tip of India, and Alleppey along the west coast at a distance from the tip of approximately 210 km, there is a good multimineral reserve. The initial survey indicates that the estimated reserves in the surveyed areas are approximately as follows: Ilmenite 1.4 million tonnes Rutile 0.14 million tomes Zircon 0.13 million tomes Sillimanite 0.53 million tonnes

"Introduction.Sixty years ago, M. Berthelot found that ethylene could be selectively absorbed from gaseous mixtures by concentrated sulphuric acid, and that the compound formed by the chemical union of the gas and acid was readily decomposed by heating with water, yielding ethyl alcohol. Only within the last few years has there been any attempt to make use of this discovery technically.Bury*, working in England at the Skinningrove Iron Works and on a commercial scale, developed a technical method for converting, the ethylene of coke-oven as into alcohol. With a gas containing less than 3 per cent of ethylene, he obtained a yield of 1.6 gallons of alcohol per ton of coal carbonized.De Loisy** perfected a technical method for treatment of coke-oven as for alcohol. Evidently this work was carried out on a semi-commercial scale. His method is based on the use of catalytic agents for hastening the absorption of ethylene by sulphuric acid. He uses part of the spent acid for drying the gases and pact for the manufacture of ammonium sulphate. Excess acid is reconcentrated by waste heat. Others have worked on the problem, but so far there has been no large recovery of ethylene from coke-oven gases. The chief difficulty seems to lie in the low efficiency (about 50% of methods and tae relatively low concentrations of ethylene in the gases treated. These proceedings consist of papers presented at two Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminars for the purpose of disseminating recent advances in mining technology related to coal mine fire and explosion prevention. Primary, although not exclusive, emphasis is placed on underground coal mining. The papers address research accomplishments ranging from methods for detecting mine fires to remote sealing systems for extinguishing coal mine fires. Each paper represents the current state-of-the-art in the respective research categories. Presentations include research occurring from both Bureau in-house and contract efforts.
