The equilibrium ratios CO/CO, of. a gas pharse coexislitrg with selected oxide phase assemblages of the system "FeO"-MnO-SiO2 and metallic iron have been determined at 1150°C. The data obtained are combined wilh the thermodynamic data on fayalite (Fe2SiOi) and "FeO"-MnO solid solutions to derive the actiuity-coiHpQsiUon relations for the various oxide components of the olivine (Fe2SiO4-,lIn2Si04) and pyroxenoid (standard free energies of formation of ferrosilile (FeSiO,), tephroite , and rhodonite from their oxides have been evaluated. In the Appendicc~s by Darken and Schivcerdtjeger the ideal solution law for solid deri oed. THE quaternary system Fe-Mn-Si-0 is of interest in many important phases of iron- and steelmaking. For instance, reduction in the blast furnace of ores containing Fe-Mn silicates, deoxidation of liquid steel with Mn-Si alloys, formation and subsequent alterations of oxide inclusions in steels, and the oxidation of manganese- and silicon-containing steels during processing are all governed largely by the thermodynamic relations existing in the system Fe-Mn-Si-O. Although the equilibria between liquid iron and Fe-Mn silicates have been studied in detail previously,' experimental data are lacking for equilibria among the solid phases. The present paper provides such data for a selected temperature, 1150°C. I) PREVIOUS WORK The general feature of subsolidus phase relations in the system iron oxide-manganese oxide-silica under strongly reducing conditions is known.' Fig. 1 represents an isothermal section at 1150°C. The phases present, in addition to silica, are three solid-solution series, viz.. the oxide solid-solution series "Fe0"-MnO (manganowiistite), the orthosilicate solid-solution series Fe2SiO4-Mn2SiO4 (olivine), and the metasilicate solid-solution series FeSi03-MnSi03 (pyroxenoid). The "FeO"-MnO solid solution is continuous between the two end members wustite and manganositeV3 as is the orthosilicate series between the two end members Fe2SiO4 and Mn2 SiO4. 4 The metasilicate solid solution, on the other hand, extends only part way from the MnSi0.l end member toward FeSiO because the latter end member is unstable relative to the phase assemblage fayalite + silica. The letters a through m in Fig. 1 identify end members of the individual solid phases dealt with [for instance, c designates fayalite (FeZSiO4) in equilibrium with wustite, e designates fayalite in equilibrium with silica, and so forth]. In addition to the phase relations there are some thermodynamic data available for the end members of the silicate solid solutions and for the "FeO" -MnO solid solution. The free energy of formation of fayalite (Fe2Si04) from its oxide components has been studied by several investigators. Unfortunately, the data obtained show considerable discrepancies. Experimental analysis of diffusion samples covering the entire Cu-Ag-Au system at 725°C has been carried out. Experimental coefficients are computed at twenty-eight points in the lermary system. It is found that the direct coefficienl for copper is nearly independent of the silver, content for 1ow-silver alloys and that the cross coefficient for silver correlates with the ther-nzodynatnic properlies. This lalter observalion leads to the conclusion that the mobililies of copper and gold are nearly equal. Thermodynarmic actiuilies for Cu-Ag-Au were computed from binary data and adjusted to be consistent with neasured tie lines across the two-phase region which extends into the ternary diagram at 725°C. Application of these therknodynarnic calculaliorls to the dijftcsion data terifies the Onsager reciprocal relations to the extent that experimental uncertainlies will allow. It is jound that diffusion neav the critical point of the 1200-phase field in the isothermal section at 725°C causes the composition gradients for copper and silver to approach infinity while the direct and cross coeficients become equal. From the standpoint of experimental Procedures, it has been shown that microanalysis of ternary samples may be carried out using a simple expression for the conversion of X-ray zntensily to composilion. The accuracy of' this method has been demonstrated by the analysis of standard alloys and by the reproducibility of composition determinations using differed X-ray lines. DIFFUSION in a ternary alloy system is basically and significantly different from diffusion in binary alloys. When only two elements are present there is just one independent composition variable, and the diffusion profile of composition vs distance across a sample must change monotonically through all solid solutions bracketed by the terminal alloys. If two-phase regions are stable for compositions between the terminal values, these must appear as planar interfaces in the diffused sample, with the composition profile exhibiting sharp discontinuities. Adding a third element may alter this picture completely. Because of the additional degree of freedom in the composition, we may see composition profiles which do not change monotonically through solid-solution ranges, and stable, nonplanar phase interfaces. Even though two-phase regions may lie between the terminal compositions of a diffusion sample on the constitution diagram, they will not necessarily appear in the diffusion profiles. In binary diffusion only one coefficient is needed to describe the interdiffusion process. From Fick's law this coefficient relates the diffusive flux of one component to its own composition gradient. In ternary diffusion we must allow for cross interaction between the two independent species. By a linear extension of Fick's law we introduce "cross" or "off-diagonal" diffusion coefficients which relate the flux of one component to the composition gradient of the other independent constituent. Thus, we require four interdiffusion coefficients to describe the transport process in a ternary system. In its most general form,1,2 the rate equation for mass transport by isothermal diffusion in a system of s components states that the diffusive flux of component i, Ji, is a linear summation of all driving forces, Xk, each force being multiplied by an appropriate compliance coefficient:

Northparkes Mines is located 27 km northwest of Parkes in central west New South Wales. The E26 deposit is the largest of all defined to-date in the area, containing over 50 per cent of Northparkes' resources and reserves. The combination of orebody geometry and geotechnical characteristics provide ideal conditions for the block cave method of mining of the first lift of the E26 deposit. Although this method of underground mining has been used for decades in other countries, E26 is the first example of its use in Australia. Copper-gold mineralisation at Northparkes is related to quartz monzonite porphyries that have intruded coeval Ordovician volcanics. Sulphide mineralisation (dominantly bornite and chalcopyrite) occurs principally within quartz veins associated with the porphyry intrusions. Veining and mineralisation occurs within both the porphyries and volcanics. To optimise the recovery of a resource within a block cave mine, a good understanding of the rock mass and ore flow characteristics is essential. These have a significant effect on the fragmentation size and range and on parameters such as the drawzone spacing, height of interaction zone and dilution entry. As ore within a cave column moves and mixes when material is extracted from below and beside it, the total reserve extracted is unique for a particular draw strategy/production history. Until recently, reserve estimates and production schedules were based on the application of a uniform dilution factor to the tabulated resource. However, given the complicated flow and mixing within the cave column, such a simplistic approach can produce erroneous results. Northparkes Mines purchased and sponsored the upgrading of a commercially available software package specifically developed for modelling removal of resource blocks under caving conditions. This Gemcom software package, PC-BC, has been used for mine planning, reserve reporting and production scheduling. Blocks within it resource block model are converted into a mineable reserve taking into account mixing and dilution during depletion of drawcolumns (by horizontal and vertical redistribution of insitu tonnage and metal). As PC-BC gives individual drawpoint reserves, it can be used during the planning stage to determine whether or not a drawpoint is economic. For E26 Lift I an optimal layout containing 130 drawpoints has been developed based on a nominal 14 m x 14 m drawpoint spacing and a 0.8 per cent equivalent copper (eCu) cut-off grade. Annual production schedules for the depletion of material above this layout are based on: I higher tonnage removal from higher grade drawpoints in the early years of production; and 2 drawpoint production rates proportional to the total tonnage of orr remaining in the drawcolumn up to the optimal height of draw tier subsequent years. The reserve is tabulated from the combined annual production schedules over the life of the lift. The pre-mining reserve for Lift I of E26 is 26.6 Mt at 1.43 per cent copper and 0.39 g/t gold, of which approximately 23.4 Mt will be extracted under caving conditions. By scaling down the annual production schedule, weekly drawpoint tonnage calls can be given for short-tern production scheduling.

Introduction Will cogeneration be a major power source in the future? The location of electric power generating plants has changed. In 1900, more than 50% of electricity was generated by industrial plants. Since then, industrial plant generation of electricity greatly decreased to 17% in 1950 and to only 3% in 1980. Changing economics in electric power generating costs, though, may allow cogeneration to reverse this trend. Cogeneration has been defined as the simultaneous production of electric (mechanical) and thermal energy from a single energy source. Some applications are considered to be byproduct generation of electricity from industrial, thermal operations. Cogeneration is not new to the mining and minerals industry. Smelters and steel mills have used waste heat to generate electricity. Public Utilities Regulatory Policies Act of 1978 The potential for increased industrial cogeneration of electricity is related to the March 9, 1978 enactment of the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act (PURPA). The US Supreme Court ruled that PURPA is constitutional. The court upheld requirements that utilities interconnect to cogenerators. It also ruled that 100% of avoided costs be used as the guideline for electricity sales by a qualifying facility (QF) to a utility. The state of New York established a floor price $0.06/kWh for electricity sales from a QF to a utility. It is obvious, then, that a cogenerator must first establish price and then become a qualifying facility in order to sell electricity to a utility. Proposed cogeneration plants The estimated industrial cogeneration potential for the years 1986 to 2000 is 9500 to 25,000 MW. Industries represented in this cogeneration estimate are pulp and paper, petroleum, chemicals, food, textiles, rubber, plastics, steel, lumber and wood, cement, glass, metal fabrication, and industrial parks. A cogeneration plant has been proposed for the Union Carbide chemical plant in Institute, WV. A steam turbine/generator would be installed to replace the pressure-reducing valve in the 2.7 MPa (400 psig) header. Scott Paper Co., Mobile, AL, proposed a cogeneration plant using a coal- and wood-fired boiler and a turbine/generator to produce process steam and electric power. A cogeneration system has been proposed for a large oil refining plant. A pulverized coal boiler would produce high-pressure steam to operate a turbine, generator. The exhaust steam from the turbine will go to the process and an existing turbine. Kansas City, MO's Armour meat-processing plant has proposed a cogeneration plant. This proposal is to use a natural gas or oil-fired, gas-driven turbine and a generator. The waste heat from the gas turbine would go to a heat recovery boiler for use as process heat. Dade County, FL is implementing a central energy system to supply electricity, air conditioning, and domestic hot water for five buildings in downtown Miami. The cogeneration system is to provide flexibility, to optimize fuel use efficiency while serving the variable thermal demands. Generation of electricity from municipal waste is not considered to be a cogeneration process but is covered by PURPA. Special considerations are provided for waste/electric power generation to encourage the development of these systems. ?

This is the fourth annual tabulation that gives mineral royalty information. The table presents previous information plus about two dozen new entries. In addition to the royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. Last year's tabulation appeared in two issues, to accommodate all of the information. This year the format has been changed slightly so the table can be printed in one issue. This year's table presents the commodities in the same sequence as last year. Sand and gravel information appears first, followed by: crushed stone for aggregate; other stone; industrial sand; other industrial minerals; energy minerals (coal, oil shale, uranium); and finally metals. As always, a caveat relates to factors that influence the reserve values. The data should serve only as a general reference. The table is not intended to present an absolute scale of reserve costs. Several factors influence the value of mineral commodities. These factors include: • location and transportation costs (especially significant for most industrial minerals); • market conditions for both the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine it; • quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing and beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; • and legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will influence reserve costs of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity; the location (either by state, US geographic area, or Canadian province); the cost (R for royalty and P for purchased cost); and the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred. The last column offers either comments or gives a footnote number for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. The units may refer to cubic yards (/yd), cubic feet (/cuft), tons (/T) (2000 lbs) or acres (/A). 1 cu yd = 0.76m3 1 cu ft =0.28m3 1st = 0.9 t7 1 acre = 0.40 ha or m2 In several cases the royalty is a percentage of the finished products, sale price and is levied against either the amount produced or the amount sold. "Discrete event simulation is a stochastic mathematical modeling tool with applications in queuing systems. Many mining operations, both surface and underground, can be simulated in the context of queuing theory , for example open pit loading and haulage operation, underground level and vertical transportation, and mineral processing circuits. A computer simulation model of the operation is an invaluable tool to study both the system’s dynamics and conducting sensitivity analysis on different effective elements on system performance. In this paper, merits of discrete event simulation in decision making in mining engineering is discussed. Moreover, a stochastic simulation framework for selection and sizing of shovels and dump trucks in surface mining is presented to elaborate one example for applicability of the method in mining operations. INTRODUCTION Mathematical modeling is a valuable tool in design, optimization, and decision making in both surface and underground mining operations. Several researchers have tried to study different aspects of mining operations using a wide range of mathematical techniques such as linear programming[1], analytical hierarchy process [2], non-linear programming[3], genetic algorithms[4-5] ,mixed integer programming [6], machine repair model[7], queuing theory [8], and conventional spreadsheet calculations based on experience and engineering judgments. There are different uncertainties in typical mining operations (e.g. material loading and haulage, drilling, and blasting). For example, in a truck-shovel operation, different governing activities such as loading, haulage, and dumping cycles are stochastic variables. Moreover, analytical modeling of a large truck-shovel operation is very complicated. Thus, application of analytical and/or deterministic techniques cannot guarantee a solution for different problems that are encountered in daily mining operations. Discrete-event system simulation (DES) is a modeling method for such time discrete and probabilistic phenomena [9]. DES has been employed by different researchers in mining engineering through available software and languages such as GPSS, SIMAN- ARENA, and SLAM [10-14]. Most of the studies so far, tried to evaluate some “what-if” scenarios, to understand the possible effects of changing different input variables on overall mine economics. For instance, Baffi and Ataeepur (1996) used Arena to simulate a truck-shovel operation [10]. Also, Sturgul has conducted extensive studies in the application of DES in the mining engineering field [15- 17]. A very good background review of application of this technique in the industry can be found in [15-16]. Previous studies have shown that, different approaches including deterministic, stochastic, and experimental methodologies result in considerable differences in outputs [18]. These techniques lead to different solutions, regardless of the quality of technique/software itself or knowledge of the modeling team. Hence, the first step is to develop a comprehensive simulation framework to obtain nearly the same optimal results for the same input variables, regardless of the employed technique."

"Foreword by Lisa SchlinkSuperintendent, operations, Freeport-McMoRan Inc.,Green Valley, AZ, USAThe sixth annual Student Poster Contest hosted by the Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration was held during the 2015 SME Annual Conference and Expo in Denver, CO. The contest had another record-breaking attendance of 31 entries: 27 graduate and four undergraduate. The universities represented were: Colorado School of Mines, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, University of Wyoming and West Virginia University.The competition began with an extended abstract review by a panel of judges selected from MPD members. At the SME Annual Conference, all students displayed their posters, highlighting their research. The students with the top abstracts from the graduate and undergraduate divisions presented their research at the MPD Student Poster Session Wednesday morning. The panel of judges then provided tallied scores for the abstract, poster and presentation to determine the winners of the 2015 Student Poster Contest. The first- and second-place winners of both the graduate and undergraduate divisions received $1,000 and $500 scholarships, respectively. The third through seventh places received $200 each, and all other entrants received $100 each and were invited to join the MPD Luncheon.In the undergraduate division, Annette Hein of the University of Wyoming received first place for her research on “Solvent Extraction of Europium from a Nitric Acid Solution.” Second place went to Jennifer Galvin of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology for her research titled “Solvent Extraction of Neodymium Using PC88A.”In the graduate division, Caelen Anderson of the Colorado School of Mines received first place for his research titled “Fundamentals of Rare-earth Flotation Surface Chemistry: Hydroxamate Adsorption on Bastnasite”. This is Caelen’s fourth year placing in the top finisher. Second place in the graduate division went to Seyed Hassan Amini of West Virginia University for his research on “Ultra Clean Coal Production for the Solar-cell Industry.”The 2015 Student Poster Contest was chaired by Lisa Schlink (Freeport- McMoRan Inc.) and Emily Sarver (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University). "The aim of this research work was to produce biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters, FAME) from canola oil using KOH loaded on y-Al203 support as a heterogeneous catalyst. Different parameters such as effects of the molar ratio of methanol to oil, catalyst amount and reaction time on the yield were investigated. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used for characterization of the catalysts. A biodiesel yield of 86.67% was obtained under catalyst preparation and transesterification conditions of calcinations temperature of 773 K, 4 h of reaction time at 338 K, and using 3.5 wt% catalysts and molar ratio of methanol/oil of 15:1. The leaching of potassium species in the spent catalyst was observed.1. IntroductionBiodiesel is an eco-friendly and alternative energy source for diesel engines that can be synthesized by transesterfication of vegetable oil or animal fat with alcohols [1 ]. There are four principal approaches to the synthesis of biodiesel involving the transesterification of the triglycerides of the plant oils and animal fats: base catalysis [2], acid catalysis [3-5], employing supercritical alcohol conditions [6] and enzyme catalysis [7]. The commonly used homogeneous catalysts are NaOH, KOH and their alkoxides. Homogeneous alkali-catalyzed transesterification is much faster than acidcatalyzed transesterfication [8]. However, a large amount of water is required to transfer the catalysts from the organic phase to a water phase after the reaction. Therefore, it is considerably more costly to separate the catalyst from the produced solution [9]. These disadvantages could be removed by use of a heterogeneous catalyst [10]. The use of heterogeneous catalysts eliminates the neutralization step, hence it results much easier to separate from liquid products. Also, they can be designed to give a higher activity and selectivity and to have longer catalyst lifetimes [11]. A large number of different heterogeneous catalysts have been synthesized for biodiesel production. For example, calcined Mg-Al hydrotalcites [12], zeolite and metal catalysts [13], metal oxides such as calcium oxide (CaO) [14], magnesium oxide (MgO) [15], zirconium oxide (Zr02) [16], and supported catalysts [17] have been investigated as heterogeneous catalysts. CaO and MgO are most frequently used heterogeneous catalysts for biodiesel production [18]. In this present work, we aimed at developing an efficient catalyst for transesterification of canola oil. We have prepared KOH/ Al203 by impregnation and applied to determine the optimum conditions for biodiesel production. Three different variables including reaction time , alcohol to oil molar ratio and catalyst loading with may influence the quality of the produced biodiesel were optimized. Moreover, SEM (scan electron microscope), XRD (X-ray diffraction) and XRF were used for characterization of the catalysts."

"According to research presently being conducted on selective lithium recovery in seawater, inorganic adsorbents with high selectivity and capacity for capturing lithium ions from liquid lithium resources are called lithium ion-sieves (LISs). Their low toxicity, low cost and high chemical stability make LISs suitable for lithium recovery from seawater. In the present study, the ultrathin LMO nanofibers with controlled diameter were successfully fabricated by an electrospinning technique with a hypothesis that greater aspect ratio (i.e., smaller diameter) would lead to the enhanced recovery of lithium ion from seawater. Design of Experiment (DOE) and dimensionless analysis were performed to systematically optimize the diameter and morphology of nanofibers. Several complementary techniques including FE-SEM and XRD were used to evaluate the physical/physicochemical properties of the nanofibers. Lastly, the lithium ion recovery was tested for the nanofibers with different physical properties using lithium ion solution. INTRODUCTION Demand for lithium resources is increasing in many industries across the world.1-2 However, the conventional resources for lithium is very limited, and it even gets worse to secure the resources due to low grade and/or complexity of feed materials. Much effort has been, therefore, devoted to obtaining lithium from aqueous lithium resources. Several methods such as solar evaporation3-4, co-precipitation5, and solvent extraction6 have been proposed for recovering lithium from an aqueous lithium source, but there are limitations on its use; It takes a very long time or conditions such as temperature, pH and Mg/Li ratio are severe. Lithium ion-sieve (LIS) materials are considered as a good lithium adsorbent because of their unique chemical structure that can selectively separate lithium ion from brine and seawater.7- 10 Furthermore, their low toxicity, low cost, and high chemical stability make LIS suitable for lithium recovery from aqueous lithium resources. Spinel hydrous manganese oxide (HMn2O4) derived from spinel lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4) after topotactically extracting lithium from the spinel structure by acid treatment is most widely investigated LIS.10, LIS materials have been actively studied in various forms for easy handling and high efficiency (i.e. membrane11,12, foam13-14, granular15,16). Among them, the 1-D nanostructure LIS with high specific surface area is excellent in efficiency.9 In this study, we present the part of our recently submitted work17. Specifically, we fabricated systemically lithium manganese oxide nanofibers with different diameter as a lithium ion adsorbent using electrospinning technique through design of experiment (DOE). Enhanced lithium ion adsorption properties of the HMn2O4 nanofibers with different diameter were investigated in lithium liquid resources."

"Printed circuit boards are potentially recyclable materials. Developing suitable methodologies for proper disposal and better utilization, brings major environmental and economic benefits. A methodology for copper recovery using heat treatment before conventional leaching is carried out. A comparison between conventional methodology and the one that includes incineration treatment is presented. It concludes about results and differences in terms of the percentage of copper leached over time. INTRODUCTION The rapid proliferation of electronic devices in the past two decades, has forced researchers to find a solution for one of the most toxic and hazardous materials, the printed circuit boards (Ghosh et al, 2015). For this, countless techniques have been developed, the methodologies includes hydrometallurgy, pirometallurgy, electrometallurgy or a combination between all of them. The amount of precious and base metals in its composition are very attractive and usable to implement methodologies that allow maximum recovery and recycling. This subject has been extensively studied and researched in order to provide solutions to the great problems generated by incorrect final disposal of this waste. Over 150 articles have been widely published in the last 15 years, covering large areas such as characterization of discarded printed circuit boards, health risks associated with processing and different routes of recycling have been analyzed to provide an overview understanding this issue (Ghosh et al, 2015). (Oh et al, 2003) performed a selective leaching of valuable metals from waste printed circuit boards by size reduction, magnetic and electrostatic separation, also leaching with sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide, achieving 95 \% of copper extraction. (Chaverra Arias, 2014) proposed a similar methodology to extract copper from electrical and electronic waste, performing similar processes and applying metallic copper electrowining as well as copper oxychloride precipitation. (Silvas et al, 2015) used hydrometallurgical processes for recycling printed circuit boards applying physical processing and copper extraction by selective leaching. (Kumar et al. 2014) conducted a leaching of metals from waste printed circuit boards using sulfuric and nitric acids. Also there have been proposed various methods for recovery of different metals including applying multiple metallurgical techniques that involve both living organisms and high temperature processes such as pyrometallurgical. The printed circuit boards are a very important source of copper, according to several authors mentioned above, the amount of copper on a printed circuit board can reach about 20 \%, because copper is responsible of establishing a conductive layer that will enable the connection between electrical and electronic components. This document proposes a methodology for recycling printed circuit boards and extract copper by selective leaching. The process that is carried out consist in a preliminary characterization and mechanical separation which will condition the material for further hydrometallurgical treatment that includes leaching in nitric acid media 3M."

In April, 1873, No. 2 furnace at the Glendon Iron Works being out of blast, it was decided to alter it from an open to a closed top. The three side flues, through which a part of the gas was formerly taken off, were 15 feet below the top, and as, for various reasons, it was not convenient to cut new flues through the brickwork at the top, as is commonly done with closed-top furnaces, a modification of Coingt's charger was employed. This apparatus, as figured by De Vathaire,* consists of a cup or hopper, like that used with the cup and cone, and a central pipe for taking off the gas, which descends some distance into the furnace, and has a projection around it forming a seat for a ring of a triangular cross-section, which closes the opening between the cup and the central gas-pipe. The charge is put into the cup, and by lowering the ring, is thrown into the furnace, a part going outside of the ring toward the walls, and a part through the inside toward the gas-pipe. In this form the apparatus was not applicable, for: 1st. With a gas-pipe three feet in diameter, in a top eight feet in diameter, the openings left by lowering the ring would not be large enough to let lump coal pass through. 2d. For the charger to shut tight, the ring must bear equally against the projection made for it on the gas-pipe, and against the edge of the cup. This would not be difficult to effect when the apparatus is first put up, but a comparatively small change in the relative position of the parts, such as is almost certain to occur from expansion, would cause the ring to touch the pipe or the cup, whichever happened to be the lower, first, and leave a leak between it (the ring) and the other. In the plan adopted (Figs. 5 and 6, Plate I), the central opening in the ring is closed by the bottom of the gas-pipe, whereby more room is left for the passage of the stock when the charger is open, than if the pipe descended into the furnace; and the pipe, instead of being rigidly supported, rests on the ring, when the charger is closed, and follows it for two or three inches as it opens, until stopped by the counter-balance lever C. When the ring is raised to close the furnace top, it comes in contact first with the bottom edge of the gas-pipe, then both are raised together, until stopped by the ring touching the edge of the cup. In this way a good joint is made at both places.

This information circular presents data for 1960 on individual coke plants in the United States. All oven-coke plants in existence, whether active or idle at the close of the year, are listed in this report. With two exceptions, only beehive plants on which reports were submitted to the Bureau of Mines are included. Although the Bureau was unable to obtain reports from these two active plants in 1960, the number of ovens and annual coke capacity are estimates, based on previous reports filed with the Bureau of Mines. Accordingly, there were 73 oven-coke plants in existence at the end of 1960 of which 70 were active. Reports were received on 44 beehive plants of which only 13 were in operation at year end. Oven-coke plants are listed alphabetically by States in table 1 which shows the name and address of the company, location of plant, classification or type of ownership, number and type of ovens, annual coke capacity, and coal-chemical materials produced. The terms "furnace" and "merchant" plants used in this and all other reports of the Bureau of Mines designate the type of ownership. Furnace plants are those owned by iron and steel companies whose main business is production of coke for use in their own blast furnaces. Merchant plants are those associated with chemical companies, gas utilities, as well as those that produce for sale on the open market metallurgical, industrial, and residential-heating grades of coke and coal-chemical materials. The annual coke capacity shown for each plant in this table is based on the minimum coking time necessary to produce coke with qualities suitable for its intended use. Therefore, the annual capacity of a plant may change from year to year, depending on age and condition of ovens, the character and quality of coal carbonized, the grade of coke required, and other factors. For example, annual coke capacity of a coke plant primarily making foundry coke with longer coking cycles would be lower than one making blast-furnace coke. Also some ovens must be operated at slightly lower than normal flue temperature because of the condition of the refractories and maximum capacity would be somewhat lower than designed capacity. For this reason, the capacity reported to the Bureau of Mines may differ from the designed or rated capacity estimated by the coke-oven builders at the time of construction. For example, if the generally accepted standard coking rate of one inch per hour were used on all ovens to calculate total annual capacity, it would have been 80.4 million tons or 2 percent higher than the capacity reported to the Bureau. Because of the factors mentioned above, the annual coke capacity shown in this table is believed to be a reliable measure of the practical operating capacity of the industry.

The Construction Aggregates Corp. operates a plant for processing sand and gravel from two deposits in Ottawa County, Mich. The bulk of the sand is obtained from a sand dune on the shore of Lake Michigan, and the gravel is dug from a glacial-drift deposit farther inland. Mining is done with draglines, and the material, both at the digging site and in the plant, is moved mainly by systems of conveyors. The Ferrysburg plant serves customers along the Great Lakes, which is unusual for a business normally local in character. Annual production exceeds 1-1/2 million tons of sand and gravel as concrete aggregate and 200,000 tons of core sand for foundry use.

"A new backfill plant was constructed in 1966 adjacent to the mill of Giant Yellowknife Mines. The reasons for the addition were to increase the storage capacity for sand fill, provide facilities for mixing cement with the fill for mine stope floors and provide a system for pumping fill to B -3 raise, a horizontal distance of 4700 feet from the mill. At the same time it was hoped to increase the density of the fill pumped underground.The plant consists of two only steel storage tanks of approximately 400 tons capacity of sand fill each. They are 17 feet in diameter and have conical bottoms. The cylindrical section is 28 feet high and the conical section 14 feet high. Each tank is fitted with water nozzles around the conical sections to remove solids at the required density. The water pressure on the nozzles is 150 lbs per square inch. The cyclones used to produce the sand back fill are located on top of the storage tanks. Five model Dl0B Kreb cyclones are used for this purpose. The vortex finders are 2 1/ 4 inch and the apex 1 1/4 inch. The cement silo or storage tank is located in the same building. It is a steel tank 17 feet diameter by 41 feet high with a conical bottom. The silo holds 250 tons of bulk cement, which is unloaded by air from a bulk highway carrier using 12 to 15 lbs air pressure. The cement is conveyed to the top of the silo, a distance of 70 feet from the ground by 450 lbs. of air.The mixing tank is a rubber lined steel tank 14 feet in diameter by 14 feet high. It is equipped with a Lightning Mixer supplied by Greey Mixing Equipment Ltd. The mechanism is driven by a 40 HP motor. The lower shaft is unsupported and is equipped with two 36 inch diameter axial flow turbine type rubber covered impellers. The backfill is discharged from the storage tank into the mixing tank by a 5"" x 4"" SRL-C pump powered by a 20 HP motor. A level control in the mixing tank regulates the rate of discharge of this pump through a Grinnell-Saunders automatic control valve. The cement silo is situated at such a height above the mixing tank to allow for a Rota-Lock, a small hopper and a cement feeder. The feeder is an Omega gravimetric belt type dry feeder with a Sensogram controller. The capacity of the cement feeder is 20 tons of cement per hour. The cement and backfill are mixed in the mixing tank at whatever ratio is required for the mine stope floors."

A field procedure for determining graphite in drilling mud is presented which is sensitive to 0.25 lbs/bbl and accurate to 20 per cent. The method, utilizing oil flotation principles, is suitable for use in all oil-free water base muds except those containing ligno-sulfonates, lignites, or surface active agents. INTRODUCTION Graphite was proposed as a drilling lubricant as early as 1940, but has not been used extensively until recently.' Graphite has been substituted for oil in certain instances to avoid oil contamination of core samples since it has been found that graphite does not interfere with routine core analysis. A major difficulty in using graphite is the lack of a satisfactory field test for determining the concentration of graphite in mud. DISCUSSION OF METHOD Several possible methods of analysis were investigated, including chemical separation, density fractionation, radioactive tracers, and oil flotation.', ' The investigation indicated that a satisfactory method for field use could be devised using an oil flotation method. It was found that toluene shaken with a highly diluted mud sample would recover sufficient graphite to be apparent in the oil phase. Refinement and standardization of technique made it possible to detect as little as 0.25 lb/bbl graphite and to estimate graphite content to within 20 per cent by using a visual comparison method. The test is limited to oil-free water base muds. Quebracho, phosphates, or barytes in the mud do not interfere with the test but surface active agents, lignosulfonates' and lignites evidently render !he graphite water-wet so that none may be recovered by oil-flotation. PROCEDURE Instructions for determining graphite in mud: 1. Collect representative one gallon sample.- from mud stream. Transfer immediately 350 ml portions of this Sample into four mixing cans labeled A, B, C, and D. Measure out graphite (same as is used to treat mud) for addition to cans as indicated below, using either a specially designed scoop or a balance. Can: A B C D Grams Graphite to Add: none 2 4 6 Stir samples B, C, and D for 15 minutes with propeller type mixer. 2. Clean and rinse well with water four 250 ml volumetric flasks labeled I, 11, 111, and IV. MANGANESE has long been considered one of the United States' most important strategic raw materials. Its indispensability in steel manufacture makes it vital to the nation's industrial life. Coupled with this indispensability is the fact that domestic producers have not been able as yet to supply more than a small part of the nation's manganese needs; consequently the United States has had to depend upon such distant foreign sources as the U.S.S.R., British India, the African Gold Coast and Brazil for the major portion of its ore. The great bulk of the mineral is consumed in the form of ferromanganese, an alloy that averages 8o per cent manganese and 20 per cent mainly iron and carbon. Manganese is used as a deoxidizer and desulphurizer in steel manufacture. By combination with the residual oxygen and sulphur of the bath, it helps to produce a clean, sound metal. Approximately 14 lb. of manganese, it is estimated, is used in making one ton of steel. For standard-grade ferromanganese, the ore should have a minimum of about 48 per cent Mn and preferably more. Beneficiation methods have not yet been developed for making the immense low-grade deposits in the United States salable at prevailing prices. Dependence upon foreign sources thrust the United States into serious difficulties during the World War. At the start of hostilities in 1914, the nation was obtaining about four-fifths of its ore from the Eastern Hemisphere. Domestic production had been negligible, amounting to only 3000 to 7000 tons a year. As the war continued, shipments from the East, endangered by sea attack and blockade, dwindled rapidly. Imports from Brazil mounted. In this grave emergency, the United States, starting almost from scratch and under the stimulus of high prices, succeeded by 1918 in producing a peak of 311,000 tons, about 3 5 per cent of its consumption that year. Since the war, the United States has depended upon foreign sources for more than nine-tenths of its high-grade ore. During 1936, 1937 and 1938, imports for consumption averaged 736,000 tons a year. During the same period, domestic shipments averaged 21,000 tons a year. Of the imports, the U.S.S.R. accounted for an annual average of 280,000 tons, the Gold Coast 208,000 tons, India 74,000 tons, and Brazil 72,500 tons. But India and Brazil, which in 1936 ranked third and fourth in the list of importers, were displaced in 1937 and 1938 by a new and much nearer source-Cuba. From less than 1 per cent of United States imports in 1931, the island republic increased its shipments to more than 27 per cent in 1938. Cuba's average for this three-year period was 97,000 tons, and its total for 1938 was 131,000 tons.

THIS note reports the results of some attempts to metastably extend the primary solid solubilities of tin, antimony, and silicon in silver by rapidly quenching these binary alloys from the melt. The procedures employed for alloy preparation, quenching, and Debye-Scherrer X-ray diffraction measurements have been described elsewhere. The lattice parameters obtained for the fcc structures in Ag-Sn and Ag-Sb alloys are presented in Fig. 1, together with the results of Owen and Roberts.4 Alloy compositions are believed to be within ± 0.2 at. pct on the basis of negligible weight losses during preparation and reproducibility of the lattice spacings. Diffraction lines from hcp phases were also detected: the relative visual intensities of the fcc (200) and hcp (10.2) lines were estimated as shown in Table I. The intensities were m for the (200) and w for the (10.2) in a quenched 13.6 at. pct Sn alloy: a lattice spacing for the fcc structure could not be reliably obtained, however. As seen from Fig. 1, the lattice parameters vary linearly with composition up to 8., at. pct Sb and 13." at. pct Sn, respectively, which may be compared with the maximum equilibrium solid solubilities5 of 7.2 at. pct Sb and 11.5 at. pct Sn, respectively. The presence of the hcp phases, which were found together with the fcc phases, is a consequence of the competition1,3 in the nucleation and growth processes during solidification. Both the fcc and hcp phases must be of the same composition for those alloys in the range where lattice parameters increase linearly with solute concentration. Despite much effort with quenched alloys of several silicon concentrations, it has not been possible to obtain lattice spacings of sufficient precision to establish the variation of lattice parameter with composition or the maximum metastable solid solubility: the equilibrium data5 suggest little primary solid solubility of silicon in silver. For alloys containing less than 16 at. pct Si, the Si (111) diffraction line was not observed. For alloys containing 10 to 25 at. pct Si, faint low-angle lines were detected and these could be indexed as the (10.0), (00.2). and (10.1) reflections of an hcp structure with a = 2.87 + 3A. c = 4.52 ± 3A, and c/a = 1.57 ± 2. The 16 at. pct Si alloy was quenched to, and examined at. liquid nitrogen temperatures without any change observed in the proportion of the hcp phase. AS you and anyone else can understand, a great expense and a large supply of things are necessary for parting a quantity of silver by means of aqua fortis. First, as you have seen, it is necessary to have a great abundance of every kind of cucurbit and alembic, of charcoal and wood, and a large number of pounds of a vigorous, well-purified aqua fortis, because for every pound of silver there are of necessity [71v] at least four pounds or more employed from the parting to the coloring of the separated gold. It is also necessary to prove its fineness and to granulate or beat it, to have furnaces and supplies, and to provide for a thousand other necessities which need not be repeated now. The most important thing in this art seems to me to be that it requires continual working night and day with extreme watchfulness and care. For this reason another way, much quicker, less dangerous, and less expensive than the aforesaid one was found by some clever men (alchemists, I believe) in order to avoid such laborious and heavy methods. It produces the substance of the thing exactly as the acid does. If you wish to make use of it in conjunction with the acid it is possible to render great aid to this work although there is a great difference in the techniques of the two. The method used in this parting is as follows: First, make a round or square wind furnace for melting, below ground or above, and of height and size in proportion to the work and as it comes out best for you. Then take a large clay crucible and fill it almost up to the edge with that silver which contains the gold, cut into pieces, and put it to melt with the silver on top of a piece of brick cut to the size of the bottom of the crucible and resting on a grate in the middle of coals that are burning well. When you see that the silver has been made so hot by the fire that it looks white and that it wishes to begin to liquefy, take a little stick of sulphur or a small piece of antimony and put it in. When this is melted, lifting away the charcoal that covers it, put in more sulphur or antimony (for the method is the same with either one) until the silver is very well melted and these materials properly incorporated. Then for every pound of silver that you put in add half an ounce of sheet copper. When this is melted take your crucible out with tongs or pincers and strike the bottom gently on the coals two or three times so that the gold may make a residue on account of
