Al mes de mayo de 2022 en nuestro país se han reportado 205 conflictos sociales, de los cuales 130 son socioambientales y se encuentran vinculados al sector minero energético; este alto número nos ha llevado a analizar los procedimientos y mecanismos que los actores dan a estas demandas sociales y verificar su efectividad. El articulo además propone la aplicación de la gestión de riesgos en los conflictos sociales como una herramienta que podría mejorar la adecuada gestión de la conflictividad social.

Esto se produciría a partir del inicio de operaciones del citado proyecto, cuyo titular es la empresa Macusani Yellowcake S.A.C, subsidiaria de American Lithium PLC, con sede en Toronto, Canadá. Este proyecto aspira a convertirse en uno de los mayores depósitos de litio en roca (el sexto en el mundo), cuya extracción se realizaría a tajo abierto y su procesamiento a través de métodos tradicionales (chancado y lixiviación).

The four elements fluorine (F), chlorine (C1), bromine (Br), and iodine (I) form the most intimate family in the entire system of elements and are grouped under the name "halogens" or salt formers (by derivation from the Greek). The first member of this family, fluorine, is the most chemically active element known; and fluorspar, and to a less extent cryolite, the chief sources of fluorine, are important commercial minerals. Fluorine occurs in nature chiefly in combination with sodium as common salt, but it also appears in other natural compounds in sea water, salt-well brines, and bedded deposits. In addition to common salt, various compounds containing chlorine (chlorides) have long been consumed by industry on a large scale, and within the last two decades that element itself has come rapidly into prominence as one of the leading industrial chemicals. Bromine and iodine, the two retaining members of the family, are less abundant in nature and less readily isolated and in consequence of their relatively high price have found few industrial uses, being consumed chiefly in medicine and in photography. Bromine, however, is now entering the industrial field to a considerable extent, due to the rapidly growing use of ethylene dibromide in anti-knock compounds for gasoline. The present paper is devoted to bromine and iodine, but in order to compre- hend the physical and chemical characteristics of these two elements (and hence their potential economic significance) it is convenient to consider them as members of the family series to which they belong. The family relationship of the halogens is illustrated by the following:4 (1) The similarity in the chemical and physical properties of the elements and their corresponding compounds is such that the prop- erties of any one member of the family can be said to summarize or rather to typify the properties of all the other members, although fluorine diverges a little in some of its properties. (2) The gradual transition of chemical and physical properties is such that if the elementa are arranged in order F, Cl, Br, I the variation in any particular property in passing from fluorine to iodine nearly always proceeds in the same order, and that is the order of their atomic weight. Taxing almost any property and comparing its magnitude in passing from the element fluorine to iodine, or from the fluorides to the iodides, a similar graiation will be observed. Thus, take the melting point of the cadmium, calcium, barium, sodium, or potassium salts, in degrees.

Progressively more stringent emission limits and advances in regulations and enforcement have made air compliance more difficult for metallurgical facilities. This has historically required improved collection and treatment of stack sources. Fugitive emission reductions are now increasingly required to achieve compliance. Typically small in magnitude, fugitive emissions have a disproportionate impact on ground level concentrations, can be visible to the public and can influence workplace health and safety. Moreover, these emissions are complex, as they are spread over multiple sources, distance and time and are affected by various activities and conditions. As such it is difficult to find, define and monitor these emissions and their impacts. This difficulty translates to the design of emission reduction measures and operational requirements. This paper presents an overview or ‘heuristic’ of fugitive emissions management for compliance in existing operations. This includes aspects such as the impact of regulations on project scope, approaches to developing a comprehensive emission inventory, considerations for solution development and the plant’s role in sustaining compliance once achieved. Case studies are presented to demonstrate how portions of this approach have been applied.

The first step in the mining and processing of nearly any mineral ore is comminution. Since the oil embargo of 1979, the mining companies have been striving to reduce energy consumption and costs. The first serious step was the introduction of in-pit crushing in the early 1980s. With in-pit crushing accepted as a standard design mode, the energy saving emphasis turned to comminution practices. A great deal of attention has been focused on blasting and grinding. The one step that has not been addressed is the primary crusher. This paper will address the opportunities for comminution improvement through optimisation of the primary crusher.

In many occasions during the Mining operation life, blasting engineers find different and controversial results of fragmentation, dilution or wall control for the same geotechnical domain and blast design (pattern and explosive charge). Most of the times, the difference between same blast designs is not measured, not controlled. Once a blast designed is defined, the most important part of the process after that is the implementation of every step of the blast on site. Almost nobody is measuring it, controlling it, but just controlling implementation is possible to relate blast design with results in a consistent way, to optimize the full process of D&B. Controlling implementation not only per event but also to check and change trends and decision-making is paramount for optimization and saving millions of extra costs every year. The lack of resources and the hardness to manage all the info created every day in a blast make this process very tough and difficult to maintain in long term. The use of new technologies on site and software that allows a best, more consistent and continuous control of blast implementation have been proved to be the key for optimizations and cost saving. This document shows the evolution of drilling and blast digitization process, savings and trends in a mine, using new technologies that creates business opportunities and general improvement of D&B process.

A major difference between electronic and pyrotechnic detonators is that, in almost all but the simplest of blast layouts, computer software is required to plan a blast using electronic detonators. While it may be possible to program delay times without software, using only the manufacturer’s control hardware, the full potential of electronic detonators can only be realized through software. Until recently, the only software available has been provided by the suppliers of the electronic detonators. These usually have just enough features to create a hole layout and to assign times to the detonators in the holes. The software is also able to communicate only with the manufacturer’s detonators. This means that the client may be compelled to change several parts of the blasting process when a different delay system is adopted, from design through to implementation and reporting, even though these may be sub-optimal at the client’s mine. While many authors have demonstrated improvements in blasting outcomes using electronic detonators, very few have discussed how the delay times were calculated. Where the calculations are discussed, it is also obvious that the delay times must be monitored and re-evaluated as conditions in the mine change. For example, the principles of superposition and scaled distance, burden relief and energy cooperation between holes should be checked constantly for different locations within the mine, changes in rock properties, or even for differences between design and actual hole positions. The most common methods in blast design software to calculate delay times are inter-hole interval, relief contour and direct editing. Although they are simple in concept, they can result in fundamental errors if they are not applied correctly. The software for electronic blast designs should be capable of not just a timing calculation, but also of showing, to some degree, the impact and interaction of the calculated times.

The concept of metal zoning has long been recognized (Spurr, 1907, 1923; Emmons, 1924, 1926; Lindgren, 1933; Rateman, 1950), although it has been considered indistinct for most epithermal districts. The geometric relation of barren zones of hydrother-mally altered rock to ore deposits was emphasized in the work of Lovering (1941, 1949, 1950), Sales and Meyer (1948, 1949, 19501, Burbank (1941, 1950), Schwartz (1939, 1950), and Kerr (1947). Lovering (op. cit.) and Sales and Meyer (op. cit.) emphasized the consistent presence of barren alteration envelopes enclosing individual ore bodies, particularly of the vein type. Schwartz (1950) noted a difference between the distribution of alteration zones described by Lovering and by Sales and Meyer, as compared with those associated with the porphyry copper deposits of the Southwest. The disseminated deposits of the Southwest usually occur within large bodies of altered rock whereas most veins do not. In the following discussion the mineralization process is conceived of consisting of two distinct phases: pre-ore nonmetallic alteration and metallization. In the present investigation the position, size, and shape of all known hydro thermally altered areas and the position, size, and metal type of all known ore deposits were plotted on base maps of southwestern and west-central Colorado (Figure 1). The maps indicate a generally consistent geometric relation between altered and metallized areas. The addition of alteration to the pattern of metal deposits establishes a temperature zoning pattern of much greater clarity than that formed by the epithermal metal deposits alone, and allows a more precise definition of mineral belts. The center of strongest mineralization is indicated to be the area of greatest barren alteration, and metal deposits are grouped about it both under structural control and crudely in response to temperature zoning. The combination of an area of strong alteration and associated marginal clusters of metal deposits is defined as a mineral district. The strong similarity in individual deposits, in groups of different types of deposits, and in the alteration-metallization relation in districts throughout the region implies that a single metallogenic province is represented in southwestern and west-central Colorado. The occurrence of deposits in Tertiary voi-canics indicates a late Tertiary metallogenic epoci., although an early Tertiary epoch is known locally as at Ouray. Dowsing is really IESG which inductively locates electric gradients (dv/dx) on the flanks of SP anomalies. "Sensors" are in one?s head. The "meter" consists of one?s body, limbs, and two $.69 welding rods. The method was calibrated near Mamainse Point, Ontario, where IESG-negative chalcopyrite-bornite-chalcocite-native copper ores reveal mineral zoning related to the IESG-positive Keweenaw fault, down which oxidizing solutions moved. In Michigan, the IESG-positive Keweenaw fault suggests that oxygen-bearing solutions from the Jacobsville Sandstone moved downward to oxidize hydrothermal sulfur to produce native copper, and to supply sufficient water to satisfy Walter White.

The foundation solution for a data centre building in Sydney, Australia comprised two alternatives, the first of which incorporated the use of CFA piles founded in rock at approx. 27m depth to support column working loadings of approx. 7.5MN, and the second utilising rapid impact compaction with a raft foundation of 1.0m thick concrete slab. Soil conditions comprised 1m of fill over 3 to 4m of sands varying from loose to dense consistency, underlain by very stiff clays overlying the rock. A creative solution incorporating Rapid Impact Compaction to improve the loose soils in conjunction with a piled raft solution was proposed. Piles proposed under the raft were Atlas Drilled Displacement piles which offered advantages of displacement pile performance and savings in time and material costs. The piled raft solution was developed in consultation with the consulting structural engineer, combining the skills of the piling contractor and consulting engineer to the benefit of the project. This paper describes the development and design aspects of the piled raft solution adopted for the project.

"Steel making technology poses strong potentials for environmental protection in three direction. One is pollution control on steel making process itself. Japanese steel industry has cut down various type of emission drastically since 1970's. Secondary, those process technology can be applied to reduce environmental burden in other industrial sectors. One of the successful examples is municipal waste treatment facility. Thirdly, development of high performance steel products, such as high strength steel for automobile body, can contribute to improve environmental performance during their use, based on the concept of life cycle assessment. Some examples of the successful development and future task is discussed.IntroductionsStack and smoke used to be a symbol of energy intensive industry such as steel making. But, scenery of steel works and its surroundings have been completely changed, and steel products have been changing, as well. The steel making industry consumes huge quantities of energy and resources. Variety of technical development have been carried out to reduce the pollutant release. This report describes the results of a survey of current blast area guarding procedures at surface and underground metal/nonmetal mines. It features five case histories (two surface and three underground mines) of blast guarding methods considered to represent the best systems in use in the U.S. Mining Industry. Elements of an effective blast guarding system are presented along with recommendations for improvements in current blast guarding practices. Industrial and military surveillance and detection technology was reviewed to determine if parallel technology exists for immediate application to blasting site security. While it is concluded that immediate transfer of industrial security technology will be limited, a number of recommendations are advanced for new research to adapt some of that technology for application to the mining environment. Two research areas considered to offer the most potential for improved blast guarding are presented. They are, computerized personnel tracking and blast area intrusion detection using infrared, microwave or E-field type detection systems.

Production of oil from a narrow shoestring sand presents problems unique in the oil industry. Especially important, from both an engineering end an economic standpoint, are the limitations imposed upon well patterns and spacings by the shape of the field. This report concerns a study of the Paola shoestring, Miami and Franklin Counties, Kane., where well density of 0.85 acre per well was not uncommon to insure profitable primary recovery in a reasonable time. However, such a great number of wells increased the operator's investment and reduced his profit considerably. It was the purpose of this study to investigate various well patterns and spacings applicable to water-flooding a shoestring reservoir and the effect of these factors upon recovery of oil and the most profitable operation of the pool. The designer of well patterns for a shoestring sand should evaluate carefully the edges of the shoestring, even though they may be considered too thin to drill. These comparatively thin edges contain large quantities of recoverable oil; moreover they are resaturated with oil as the pool is water-flooded.

Work that has culminated in the manufacture and testing of a old-selective resin on a pilot-plant scale is dcscribed. Following a brief discussion about the nature of commercially available resins which identifies them as poor candidates for a gold extraction application, the improved properties of the new type of resin are illustrated using results from comparative loading tests. Further results from continuous countercurrent extractions using synthetic leach liquors and elution work using thiourea as the eluant demonstrate the superiority of the new resin over commercial resins and hence, its potential for use in a resin-in-pulp process for gold.

The metallurgical response of a difficult to treat coal and an easy to treat coal orebody were investigated in terms of the coal yield and the coal quality in a basic coal recovery flowsheet. The purpose of this paper is to show trends and derive principles for the treatment of different coal types. This investigation entailed using the LIMN simulator to simulate the metallurgical response by varying the plant operational parameters. The controllable plant variables investigated were: ?Cyclone size ?Screen and hydro-cyclone cut points ?Medium cut density ?Feed particle size distribution.

MF is the semi-blast furnace which has been developed at Mitsui Miike Smelter in the 1960's to treat vertical retort residue. The MF has also been tested for treatment of various recycling materials and wastes. Now various secondaries and wastes (steel dust, zinc leaching residue, Cu-Ag sludge, spent catalyst and spent rubber, etc.) are mainly treated. Powder materials are briquetted with reductant before being fed to the furnace. Products are crude zinc oxide, matte, non-hazardous slag and steam. Zinc and lead are recovered in oxide dust, and copper and silver are recovered in the matte. The MF furnace can be widely applied to many kinds of materials which contain such non-ferrous metal-valuables. In addition, the improvement in operation and technology has effectively made the unit capacity much larger. The MF furnace now has many advantages for these treatment processes.

In August 2006 a technical alliance was formed between Orica Mining Services and Century Mine to provide blasting solutions. The alliance is in the form of a Rock to Specification (R2S™) service, one of Orica’s Blast Based Services (BBS™). The ultimate goal was to facilitate the rapid expansion of material movement from 26 to 41M m3 (34 to 53M yd3) per annum while maintaining a reliable ore supply to the mill.
