The mechanism by which age-hardening takes .place is still not completely understood. The principal theories range from the extreme of "precipitaiion-hardening" to that of "order-hardening," with many intermediate gradations. In the hope of obtaining new data on which to base a choice among the many theories, the authors have made electron micrographs of formvar replicas taken from metallic specimens at various stages of age-hardening. The results so obtained on an alloy of 2 per cent beryllium in copper and one of 20 per cent molybdenum in iron will be described in the following pages, as well as the technique used in preparing the replicas. Preparation of Formvae. Replicas of Metallic Specimens This section is concerned with the techniques that have roved successful in preparing formvar replicas for studying the microstructure of metals with the electron microscope. Because of its simplicity and accuracy, the formvar replica1 method developed in the General Electric Research Laboratory has been used exclusively, since it is much simpler than the silica replica method of Heidenreich and Peck2 and produces as good results. The formvar method to be described requires a technique acquired only by practice, and no foolproof set of rules can be given. it is a rapid method and a replica can be obtained in less than five minutes under favorable conditions. This does not mean that perfect replicas can be produced every five minutes, but rather that one can well afford to take several strippings* in order to produce a replica of high quality. The metallographic technique required for replica work—very fine polishing and etching with very dilute solutions—is described here. It can be said, in general, that almost any surface that has been carefully prepared for a photomicrograph at 1000 or more diameters can be used to obtain a replica for the electron microscope. Preparation of Metallographic Specimens The preparation of the metallographic specimens is somewhat more exacting than that usually given to samples to be used for inspection under the light microscope. After much experimentation, it was concluded that the best method consists in polishing the metal through to the coarse cloth, then etching and repolishing on final cloth until the layer of distorted metal is removed. "Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines are conducting research on cable-type ground supports to assess their material and support properties and to provide design criteria for implementing cable supports as a workable roof control system under various underground mining conditions. Much of this work involves laboratory assessment of the material and support properties of cable supports using both conventional and birdcage steel cables. Included in this assessment are single and double cables, effects of changes in embedment length on support strengths, water-cement ratios, use of breather tubes, and pumpability and water-bleeding properties of grouts.IntroductionSince cable supports were introduced in the early 1970s, considerable research has been conducted in laboratories and at mine sites to understand their behaviour. The U.S. Bureau of Mines began a laboratory evaluation project in 1985 at the Spokane Research Center (SRC) to study the behaviour of cables supports under uniaxial loads so that the effects of various cable support components, such as grout and breather tubes, could be identified. Other objectives were to compare the behaviour of various types of cables and grouts and to collect meaningful data for numerical analyses. Pull tests were conducted to determine how cables supports reacted under uniaxial loads and how they failed when ultimate loads were exceeded. Such data are essential for the development of numerical models for analyzing rock mass behaviour when the rock is supported with cables.Test ProgramBecause each cable support can be composed of either single or double cables as well as a breather tube, pull tests were designed to include a variety of samples containing these components. A series of samples containing a single conventional cable, a neat cement grout having a water-cement ratio of 0.45, and no chemical additives was selected as a standard (Table I). Then one component in the system, such as the presence of a breather tube, was changed, and results of tests compared to results obtained for the standard samples to determine what influence that component might have on the behaviour of the support system. If significant changes in test data occurred, they could be attributed to that one component. To control the quality of the samples, the physical condition of the cables and tubes were monitored closely, and compressive and tensile strengths as well as flow properties were determined for the grout used in each test series."

The principal object of an underground coal mine transportation sys- tem is to move coal from the face where it is produced to the outside of the mine where it is prepared for market. In addition to the movement of coal, a transportation system must also move supply materials to the inside; it must move men in and out of the mine; and it must move rock and other debris out of the mine for disposal. Usually, mine haulage is divided into three categories named for the various areas of the mine served : 1) Pace Haulage. This is used at face from the mining machine to the intermediate transport system. 2) Intermediate or Secondary Haulage. Generally this is used between face haulage and main haulage. Sometimes this is merely an extension of the main haulage. 3) Main Haulage. This extends from the secondary haulage to the outside and is usually either a track or conveyor system, sometimes a combination of both. Transportation modes of coal in the various areas pose different problems, but the whole system must be synchronized. For instance, at the face the coal should be removed quickly from the various places to facilitate the movement of machines, whereas the intermediate system just passes the same coal on to the main transportation system. Selection of the transportation system must be based on the seam height, mining methods used to extract the coal, capacity required, ease of coal handling, and haulage efficiency. When driving rooms, mine cars can be used. They often simplify supply haulage and rock handling because they can also handle these items. Conveyors could be used and would have a greater haulage capacity but they cannot handle supplies easily or segregate the rock. When using a different mining method, such as longwall, mine cars cannot be used because there is not sufficient space to move the cars at the face nor can the cars haul the coal without delays which would cause excessive losses in production. As for ease of handling at a longwall face, conveyors are convenient because of their low height, ruggedness, and ability to operate while being advanced. Similarly, in low seam heights, conveyor systems are easier and more economic to operate than the regular track haulage because roof has to be taken down for handling mine cars of adequate size.

"The design, development, and verification of the Lovat 7.6metre diameter full-face tunnel-boring machine is reviewed. Programmatic and technical challenges are outlined with a review of the specifications and the design to meet these requirements. Subsystem designs are presented for the waste material removal, ventilation, cutter head, structural support, advance technique, water removal, and interfaces with the Donkin-Morien Mine. The techniques used to verify that the design meets the requirements is by testing in the Lovat factory and in the field. Certification of the machine for use in a methane environment is discussed.IntroductionStudies have concluded that the average annual worldwide tunnel construction is 500 kilometres at an estimated average co st of $3,400 U.S . per linear metre. The total market value of the tunnelling industry is estimated as approximately $1.7 billion U.S. per annum. Of this, the current market for tunnelboring machine excavation is approximately $270 million U.S. per annum worldwide with a further potential of $250 million if more contractors are convinced that Tunnel-Boring Machines (TBM) are more suitable than conventional techniques. The worldwide civil tunnelling market has the potential to double each year in the next 5 to 15 years. Growth has been identified in the energy and mineral resources sectors of the economies of many nations and a significant volume of machine tunnelling studies and trials are presently underway for the extraction of coal, uranium , heavy oil or oil sand fuels, metallic and non-metallic industrial minerals and base metal or rare earth ores. Further tunnel projects for regional transportation, waterpower, irrigation , high density urban transportation, storm water sewers and water supply purposes are continually being implemented with new concepts like military security facilities and underground storage schemes being considered.Lo vat Tunnel Equipment of Rexdale, Ontario, the only Canadian manufacturer of TBMs was incorporated in 1973 to manufacture so ft ground tunnel-boring machines to satisfy this growing market demand. Lovat has produced an average of 5 machines per annum during the period 1972 - 1982 and has established an international reputation for competitive costs, quality of construction, after-sales service, and reliability. "This paper presents a preliminary assessment of the technical and economic feasibility of a caustic leach - electrowinning process for the recovery of zinc and lead from electric arc furnace baghouse dust at a mini-steelplant. Recent studies and literature are referenced briefly as they pertain to the formation and characterization of dust, toxicity considerations and alternative dust treatment and disposal options.Laboratory testwork results, published data, pilot plant experience and anticipated influences resulting from recycling residues are used for the purpose of developing a conceptual design for a caustic leach - electrowinning plant to treat 15,000 tonnes/year of dust at a one million tonnes /year capacity steelplant in Canada.Target economic studies, comprising preliminary estimates of capital and operating costs, revenues and rate of return are presented. Economic and commercial considerations concerning the relative merits of dust treatment at a centralized facility compared with an on-site plant are discussed.IntroductionThe treatment or disposal of mini-steelplant electric arc furnace (EAF) baghouse dust has been given increasing attention in recent years for two principal reasons. Firstly, the dust is now classed as a hazardous waste material under V.S. EPA regulations which prohibit its disposal in dumps other than controlled landfill sites. Secondly, the dust contains certain metal values, notably zinc and lead, which may be economically recoverable, depending on the costs associated with disposal resulting from enforcement of the EPA regulations. Other metallurgical dusts and waste materials, from both ferrous and non-ferrous operations, may require the same considerations as EAF baghouse dust.Several studies have been carried out to examine various aspects of dust treatment but few commercial plants are in operation. Technology employed uses pyrometallurgical techniques. Commercial-scale hydrometallurgical plants are not known to exist although small-scale plants are frequently more economically attractive than their pyrometallurgical counterparts which generally require economies of scale to be viable.The concentration of mini-steelplants in northeast V.S.A. and southeast Canada merits study to determine whether or not dust treatment for metals recovery is a commercially feasible alternative to disposal.This paper examines the technical and economic feasibility of a caustic leach - electrowinning process for the recovery of zinc and lead from EAF baghouse dust at an on-site ministeel plant processing carbon steel scrap and discusses economic and commercial considerations pertaining to dust treatment at a larger, centralized facility."

This report presents a mathematical model for the propagation of UHF radio waves in the large cross-section tunnels of a room and pillar limestone mine, and describes the analysis of a small amount of propagation data obtained in a limestone mine. The model and analysis is based on the waveguide mode theory developed earlier for the transmission of UHF waves in coal mine tunnels, with allowance for propagation losses due to refraction into the tunnel walls, to scattering by wall roughness, and to long range random tilt of the walls. Propagation around corners and through pillars is also examined based on a ray theory approach, together with the beneficial effects of placing reflectors at intersections to significantly reduce corner losses. The theory is found to be in fair agreement with the data; however, additional in-mine measurements are needed to provide a more conclusive test of the model.

"An estimated 600,000 tons of bentonite clay are used annually in the U. S. as binder for production of iron ore concentrate pellets. Since this is a significant cost item for the plants, and the addition of bentonite to the pellets contributes undesirable silica into the finished pellets, there is considerable incentive for finding methods to reduce bentonite use. One way to reduce bentonite levels is to selectively use those bentonites that are most effective in this application, so that a lower dosage will still produce a sufficiently strong pellet. Unfortunately, there are no satisfactory methods available for accurately predicting which bentonites are actually most effective, short of using them to actually make pellets. One of the popular methods for attempting to evaluate bentonites is the “Plate Water Absorption” (PWA) test. While some plant operators accept the PWA results as indicating the relative quality of bentonites, others disagree and claim that, over a fairly broad range of values, PWA does not correlate with bentonite performance.Since both Ca+2 and Mg+2 ions are known to reduce the swelling and water absorption capacity of bentonite, it was believed that the presence of these ions in plant recycle water could be changing the bentonite performance. Since the standard PWA test uses only distilled water for its measurements, it could not detect these effects. Experiments were therefore carried out on a number of different bentonites using a modified PWA tests, with plant recycle water replacing the distilled water. These experiments showed little effect of the plant water on the PWA value, and chemical analysis of the water showed that the levels of dissolved salts were quite low.Water and accompanying salts were then extracted from a magnetite concentrate filter cake by rinsing with distilled water. Analysis of this water showed an extremely high level of dissolved salts, particularly salts of calcium and magnesium. When concentrations were compared with the recycle water from the plant filters, it was determined that levels of Ca+2 and Mg+2 retained in the filter cake were over 500 times higher than levels in the recycle water. This extreme elevation of soluble salts in the filter cake is believed to be due to adsorption of these ions into the electrical double layer of the magnetite particles."

Because of the lack of a universally accepted definition or standard for RCA, we are left to our own conventions in the marketplace as to what is most ?effective? or a ?Best Practice? for our own facilities or organization. This lack of uniformity in the application of RCA produces an equal lack of uniformity in the measureable outcomes of RCA on the bottom-line from site to site and industry to industry. What is the definition of success for an RCA? Is it regulatory compliance? Is it some quantifiable measure of bottom-line performance? Is compliance and bottom-line performance the same thing? Can we measure the ROI we receive by doing compliant RCA? These questions must be adequately addressed if any definition of RCA is to be effective on the bottom-line. Like our various Corporate Vision and Mission Statements, what would be our Vision and Mission for RCA? When pondering the answer to this question, we should consider: ? What Key Performance Indicators will the Success of RCA be Linked to? This provides a direct correlation to the corporate dashboard and therefore garners support for the RCA effort when implemented at the sharp end. Not until we know what KPI?s will effectively measure our maintenance and reliability objectives can we begin to establish which opportunities will afford the greatest returns1. ? What Bottom-Line Metrics will be Tracked to Measure the Effectiveness of Our RCA Effort? Will it be increased production, profitability, regulatory compliance, etc.? Will it be decreased injuries/fatalities, claims, customer complaints, risks, etc.? We should be specific about these metrics and their correlation to the metrics on our corporate dashboard. ? What Will Trigger an RCA Investigation? Normally companies will establish quantifiable thresholds to be surpassed before an RCA will be conducted. Examples may be an OSHA recordable injury, a failure event in which production losses exceed $250,000, an equipment failure in excess of $50,000 or a regulatory violation. This is the norm. However, we should realize this is using our RCA skills totally on a reactive basis. High Reliability Organizations (HRO) strive for proaction and they also use RCA proactively. Why can?t we use RCA to analyze why unacceptable risks from an FMEA are so high? It is perfectly applicable yet rarely implemented in this fashion.

Introduction Mechanical classifiers consist of a settling tank with parallel sides and a sloping bottom equipped with a mechanism which continuously agitates the pulp and removes the settled solids. The functions served by mechanical classifiers include the following: (1) allow the particles larger than the desired size to settle in the tank and provide an overflow product with a minimum of oversize particles, (2) produce an overflow product of sufficiently high solids content to meet the requirements of the subsequent processing steps, (3) agitate the pulp and permit separation of the entrapped undersize particles so they can report in the overflow product, and (4) drain and remove the underflow solids from the settling pool. Various types of mechanisms have been used to agitate the pulp and remove the settled solids, which include: (I) endless belt and chain drags, (2) reciprocating rakes, (3) helical flights mounted on a rotating shaft which extends through the settling pool, (4) helical flights inside of a rotating drum which contains the classifier pool, (5) troughed conveyor belts forming the settling pool in the concave curve of the belt closely following the tail pulley, and (6) low-speed impellers agitating the underflow settled in the apex of cone-type mechanical classifiers.23 The principal use of mechanical classifiers has been in closed¬-circuit wet grinding; however, this application has been widely displaced over the past few decades by the hydrocyclone. The hydrocyclone installation, including its feed pump, offers lower capital costs and requires less floor space. Nominally it produces an overflow prod¬uct of higher solids content, compared with a mechanical classifier, for comparable classification size up to 400µm (35 mesh). However, these advantages of the hydrocyclone are being gained at the sacrifice of some of the advantages of the mechanical classifier. The mechanical classifier requires less power and has lower maintenance costs than the hydrocyclone and its feed pump. The underflow product from the mechanical classifier can have a higher solids content and contain less entrapped undersize particles than the comparable product from the hydrocyclone. Consequently, it is capable of operating at a higher classification efficiency. A reduced circulating load24, 25 results under these conditions in a closed-circuit grinding application. Other applications for mechanical classifiers include desliming, dewatering, and washing operations. Sand-slime separation may be achieved using one or more stages of mechanical classifiers. Typical applications would include washing and deslimining of concrete aggre¬gate or sand; glass sand; abrasives; oyster shells; phosphate rock; iron, nickel, and chromium ores; alumina; zeolites; solar salt; and precipitates from chemical processing. As an example for the latter, Bitzer26 recommended the use of mechanical classifiers for countercur¬rent cementation-in-pulp of copper from the leach liquor. Similarly, mechanical classifiers are used in uranium processing27 for separation of the barren sands from the pregnant leach solution. Depending on the particle size and the effectiveness of the sand¬slime separation, the sand product from mechanical classifiers may be drained to solids content approaching 84%. Thus, mechanical classifiers are frequently used as dewatering equipment for various applications, such as: 1) Make a product having suitable solids content for subsequent transport by belt conveyor. 2) Provide a drained product to reduce cost of drying. 3) Provide a drained, washed, heavy sand product for return to the circuit. 4) Recover fine values from dilute plant effluents from coal, sand, phosphate-rock, and iron-ore washing plants and from steel-mill flue¬dust scrubbers. 5) Drain residual reagents of a preceding process stage prior to conditioning with reagents of different characteristics, e.g., cationic¬anionic flotation of phosphate rock, iron ore, etc. Design and Operating Features The proper selection of mechanical classification equipment re¬quires that the properties of the solids and liquid are adequately de¬fined. The following descriptive information regarding the solids is desired: feed rate, chemical and physical composition, density, tem¬perature, size analysis, and desired separation size. For the liquid used, the following data would be needed: feed rate, density, viscosity, pH, and temperature. Settling Area. The pool area required to permit a particle larger than the separation size to settle depends on the density and shape of the particle and on the density and viscosity of the pulp within the classifier pool. These criteria of the solids and pulp determine the settling rate which, in turn, determines the settling area required. Determination of the settling rate by long-tube batch tests can be used to calculate the settling area. A theoretical approach for estimat¬ing the settling area requirements is discussed in Chapter 1, Classifica¬tion Theory. This procedure can be used when neither test data nor empirical data from similar operations are available. Data on settling-area requirements and settling rates have been compiled by the manufacturers of mechanical classifiers. The approxi¬mate settling area required for a particular separation size can be estimated by using the curve shown in Fig. 65. This curve applies for closed-circuit grinding applications. For dilute velocity classification in open circuit, desliming, the length of the overflow weir, W, multiplied by the weir's mean distance from the feed opening, E, is used as the design criterion, instead of the settling area, in sizing the classifier. The area requirements, W X E, for dilute velocity classification can be expressed in terms of volumetric flow, Q, and settling rate, Rs, as follows: W x E = Q/(18.06 Rs) where W and E are feet, Q is gallons per minute, and Rs is inches per second. Overflow Weir. The hydraulic head, and thus the velocity at which the overflow crests the overflow weir, is one of the factors controlling the particle size of classification. Consequently, the length of the overflow weir must be designed to provide the overflow velocity which allows the particles larger than the desired size of classification to settle in the working area of the pool. "It is safe to say that the coal industry, in the United States and globally, is currently suffering through one of the hardest times in its history.A perfect storm of competition, changing energy demands, politics and public perceptions have collided, inflicting significant harm to the industry that many say is irreparable. This, in turn, has led to massive job losses in some regions, heavy cuts in production and even bankruptcy filings from two of the largest coal mining companies in the nation.Cheaper natural gas can certainly take a large share of the blame for the struggle of coal, as utility companies switch from coal to natural gas for power generation. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) the amount of coal used for electricity generation in the United States is at a 45-year low.November 2015 marked the fifth consecutive month that natural gas was the leading source of power generation in the United States. EIA said generators produced 101,866 thousand megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity with gas in November versus just 87,789 thousand MWh with coal, the lowest monthly level since May 1980 when monthly coal use was 84,884 thousand MWh.According to Robert Godby, director of the Center for Energy Economics and Public Policy at the University of Wyoming, there are a number of factors playing a role in the decline of coal, but he points to the advances in fracking as the tipping point.“A lot of people will argue that regulation is the cause of the decline, and it has played a part, for sure, but the story of the recent past is more about what competition has done to the energy market,” Godby told Mining Engineering. “The war on coal was originally declared by natural gas in 2008.”The price of natural gas, which was at $13 per million Btu before the gas fracking boom, has fallen to as low as $1.68 in December 2015. Likewise, Godby said the cost of wind generation is now lower than the cost of generation from coal and the cost of solar generation is coming down as well. In addition to that, the demand for energy has changed in the past five years with more efficiencies in everything from building design to lightbulbs."

Accurate measurement and evaluation of hand-transmitted vibration from a power tool is an important issue for tool manufacturers, because they are obliged to develop low-hazard power tools for workers. The International Standard ISO 5349(1) dictates a systematic procedure for the measurement and evaluation of hand-transmitted vibration. However, the uncertainty in this measurement is too large for manufacturers to apply such data to the design and modification of power tools. There can be several sources of this uncertainty in such measurements; e.g., operator-dependent, power tool-dependent, and operational conditions (see Table 1). For a manufacturer to characterize the exposure of a power tool’s use to a given level of vibration, the relationship between these uncertainty factors and the measured vibration must be elucidated. In this study, we investigated the effect of several factors on the uncertainty in measurements. [ ] Methods In this study, some of the factors in Table 1 were selected for examination, and their effect on the measured variation was quantitatively investigated. Three tools from the same manufacturer were sampled at random in our experiments, and each of five of the same type of insert (disks or tips) was installed into each tool. Although each of the tools and inserts were of the same design and were made by the same production process, they differed from one to another, which can be a source of the variation in the measured vibration. Three human subjects participated in our experiments, which were carried out as stated in ISO 5349. The subjects were asked to maintain their posture, and the applied force was kept as constant as possible. The applied force was monitored using an indirect method, where vibration energy was displayed in real time during the experiment using a three-axis accelerometer attached to the work piece at a specified point. The appropriate range of the applied force was predetermined to cover the range of real work operations. The engineering tolerance between the inner diameter of a grit disk and the outer diameter of the tool shaft leads to an eccentricity of the mass at the center of the disk. The degree of eccentricity varies with installation, and this is another source of uncertainty. In our study, the effect of this eccentricity was investigated by carrying out repeated assembly and disassembly of an insert.

Any discussion of outside support to Latin American mineral industries must concede at once the pre-eminent role of U. S. industry and business. American capital has developed the great copper resources of Chile and Peru, the lead-zinc of Peru and Mexico, the bauxite of Surinam and Jamaica, the petroleum and iron ore of Venezuela. American consumers have provided the market for their products. U. S. companies operating south of the border have trained Latin American geologists, engineers, chemists, and skilled labor—including metal, mineral, and fuel technicians—to new and greater competence. The industrial demands of World War II drastically altered world economics and concepts of U. S. foreign mineral requirements. In this country discovery of vital mineral resources fell far behind the alarming depletion rates, and there was new appreciation of the actual and potential importance of the world's less extensively explored areas. During the war and afterward, the task of supplying the nation's mineral requirements became greater than private industry could carry alone, and the Government assumed a position of continuing support. In Latin America, as elsewhere, this support applies in three categories: banking, procurement, and technical assistance. The first two are now generally accepted as necessary Government functions; the third has often been misunderstood and misinterpreted, although it has given rise to legitimate controversy. There have been major accomplishments in all three categories, as well as some errors of judgment. Since the beginning of World War 11, U. S. Government financing, procurement, and technical assistance have been applied on a large scale to a wide range of commodities and services throughout the free world. The present discussion—under the separate headings mentioned—will concern only the support related to a single industrial group in a single geographic area. During the War Federal banking was conducted on an emergency scale by temporary agencies created to meet the abnormal circumstances. Unfortunately, there are no readily available data on these activities that would permit evaluating loans and credits extended for mineral projects in Latin America. The only agency operating in this field since World War II is the Export-Import Bank, under its own authority and to some extent from credits authorized by the Office of Defense Mobilization. The Bank can offer more capital—on more favorable terms—than is available from most Latin American banks, and its staff of engineers evidently can appraise loan applications more favorably than commercial banks in this country are willing to do. The risks seem to be justified, as defaults have been well under 1 pct of total loans. From V-J day 1945 to the end of 1957, mineral loans to Latin America have been authorized for projects totaling $541.63 million in eight countries. In order of magnitude of credits, they have been made to Brazil, Peru, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Guatemala, and Bolivia. In order of magnitude by industries. they are for development and expansion of steel mills, copper, manganese, nitrate plants, iron ore, zinc plants, sulfur plants, cement plants, tungsten, coal, and lead. Loan Distribution: By far the largest loans have been $307.9 million for iron and steel projects in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, and Peru: $100.4 for developing the great low-grade copper deposits of southern Peru; and $55.3 million for developing manganese deposits in the Territory of Amapa, Brazil. Others range from $20.8 million for a zinc smelter in central Peru to $19 thousand for iron-mine trucking equipment in Chile. It has been noted that 59 pct of the loans have been to foreign companies, 14 pct to companies of mixed foreign and American capital, and 27 pct to American mining companies. Introduction Chloride leaching of sulfidic ores has been known about for 100 years. It is recognized as a highly efficient process to produce concentrated leach solutions. Despite this, chloride leaching found little practical application until recently because of the highly corrosive nature of concentrated chloride solutions. This situation changed with the advent of modern construction materials such as GRP, polypropylene, butyl rubber, etc. And in the past 20 years, research has burgeoned in the area of chloride hydrometallurgy. The research impetus stemmed from the belief that chloride leaching can provide an alternative to smelters for treating conventional copper concentrates. In addition, chloride leaching was thought to be suitable for on-site refining of copper at small tonnage operations located in remote areas. And chloride leaching was seen as a logical choice for treating unusual or complex concentrates that smelters could not handle. Underpinning these beliefs is the attraction of chloride-based hydrometallurgical processes for sulfidic ores. Sulfur is liberated in the environmentally acceptable elemental form rather than as sulfur dioxide. Consequently, sulfidic copper ores have received much attention. A review of Edmiston in 1984 describes 12 chloride-based processes. All managed to progress past the "laboratory beaker" stage of evaluation. In nine of these processes, copper is recovered electrolytically. Key features of these processes are summarized in Table 1. Table 1 shows that the processes must include a copper solvent-extraction step. Only these processes produce a clean copper electrolyte capable, with no further refining, of directly producing high quality cathode copper. The ICI/Elkem process is the exception here. The rest of these processes use o-hydroxyaryloxime reagents for the solvent extraction of copper and are constrained by the performance of these reagents. This is governed by hydrogen ion concentration (Equation 1). The practical result is that only relatively dilute copper solutions can be treated (Canmet, Phelps Dodge), or careful pH control or adjustment is necessary (Minimet Recherche, B.H.A.S.). This negates one of the attractive features of chloride leaching - its ability to produce very concentrated copper solutions, up to 40-45 gl-1. [ ] In all four processes using o¬hydroxyaryloxime extractants, solvent extraction transfers the copper from the chloride to the sulfate medium. To minimize cross-contamination of the two anions, the loaded organic solvent has to be scrubbed to remove the chloride ion. Anhydrous zirconium tetrafluoride can be used as a precursor for the manufacturing of nuclear-grade zirconium metal. This can be done by fluorinating plasma-dissociated zircon with ammonium bifluoride in a batch reactor. This paper describes the batch process. It was proved that anhydrous zirconium tetrafluoride can be manufactured by this route as confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The process shows potential for scaling up to the kilogram scale and possibly the tonnage scale.

THIS note reports on a continuation of a program on the thermodynamics of Fe-S-X systems in the "steel-burning" temperature range begun by Bock, Barloga, and parlee.' Small coils of 0.039-in.-diameter pure iron (Ferrovac-E) wire were equilibrated with Fe-S-0 melts in ingot iron crucibles under argon at 1324°C in the assembly shown in Fig. 1, the lower part of which was heated in a large Globar furnace. Fig. 1 shows (R) the coiled iron wire sample, (M) the Fe-S-0 melt prepared from desired proportions of ferrous sulfide and ferric oxide, (K) the iron crucible, (I) a mullite guide tube, (J) an alumina crucible, (L) alundum sand, (N) crushed mullite, (Q) hollow cylinders of K30 brick, (C) a steel rod, (B), (El, (F), (G), (P), and (O), details of brass water-cooled head, and (H) a mullite tube 2-3/4 in. ID and 26 in. long. The rod (C) bearing the sample could be removed at will and be replaced by a tube for sampling the melt, or by a thermocouple for comparing the melt temperature with a control thermocouple not far from the 2-3/4-in. mullite tube. After equilibration the iron coils were treated with acid to remove the outer layer of metal and then they were analyzed for sulfur by a standard combustion method. The melt samples were analyzed for oxygen by a variation of Lander's2 hydrogen-reduction method for mattes, and for sulfur by the ASTM combustion-iodometric method NO. E 30-47. When the results of some forty-two runs were examined it was found that the sulfur and oxygen contents of the equilibrated melts showed good consistency, in that the plotted compositions fell along the smooth curve shown in Fig. 2. The points on this curve represent the experimental compositions of melts in equilibrium with ?-iron (Fe-S-0) solid solutions. These solid solutions are saturated with sulfur and oxygen with respect to the melt and therefore have the same sulfur and oxygen activities as the melt. The Faculty of Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) offers a core first-year engineering design and innovation course, ENGG1000, undertaken during the first and second semesters. This course is highly regarded in the sense that it provides an introduction to many concepts and activities that students will experience over the four-year minimum for which they are undergraduates at UNSW. Approximately 1400 students enrol in the semester 1 course across the Faculty, typically 80 of which undertake the Mining Engineering stream. Students in teams of between six and eight design and construct a physical model to represent an aspect of their chosen discipline. For example, in 2013 the mining engineers designed and built a model dragline. This paper concentrates a major aspect of the course ? the involvement of team members in group activities and the development of the associated skills of peer assessment and peer review as the course progresses over a period of 12 weeks. The term ?peer assessment? in this paper refers to the requirement for students to assess the design components of their peers. This course has a structured requirement in terms of how a successful design is a result of a sound design process rather than a ?try and see? approach. Each student must describe in detail the process they undertook to achieve their final design ? hence the approach is independent of the discipline and/or project selected. Peer review is a process whereby students review the contribution of their team members to the overall design. This activity encourages team involvement and interaction. The final assessment mark can be moderated by the outcome of this peer review, although it is run twice during the semester. The first ?run? is for feedback only during week six and hence no moderation is undertaken. It was found through consultation with students and from questionnaires that both processes are well accepted and highly regarded by students, as they give them a degree of ownership of the assessment process. In addition, the processes provide rapid and relevant feedback on the progress of individual students. Peer review and peer assessment are also considered to be very valuable tools for use in courses in succeeding years. For instance, many of the courses in mining engineering rely heavily on group assessment tasks.

"The consequences of ineffective mine closure in South Africa are evident from the number of abandoned mines and operations on extended care-and-maintenance, the on-selling of mines to less well-resourced companies to close, and increasing illegal mining activities. However, the data to substantiate these observations and provide insight into the underlying issues has not been available. Through the Promotion of Access to Information Act, a list of mine closure certificates applied for between 2011 and 2016 and a list of certificates granted over the same period for all nine regions of South Africa was obtained. From the analysis of this data, we show that the mine closure system as implemented in South Africa is largely ineffective. Although closure certificates are being granted, these are for prospecting sites and small-scale mines, which have a relatively small environmental impact. No large mines of any environmental significance were relinquished over the period under review, with very few applying for closure certificates. Furthermore, the issuing of closure certificates varies significantly between regional offices, with the success rate for applications being generally low and issuing of certificates taking an extended period. IntroductionThere are a number of concerns with the mine closure process as practiced in South Africa, and these have largely been laid at the door of government. Alberts et al. (2017) stress that the legislation generally conforms to international best practice. However, the system is ‘complex and unwieldy’, involving various pieces of legislation and different government departments with overlapping requirements and different interpretations of the law. A further area of concern is the capacity and competence of government to implement legislation. The ‘shortage of relevant mine closure skills and knowledge within the regulator’ was identified by van Druten and Bekker (2017) as a key contributor to unsuccessful closure. Lack of capacity and resources within the regulator has also been highlighted by Botham, Kelso, and Annegarn (2011) and Milaras, McKay, and Ahmed (2014). A recent study of the mineral application process by Corruption Watch (2017) indicates that positions in the regulator have been frozen for many years, leading to a shortage of staff, and that unqualified individuals have been appointed. There is also the perceived reluctance of government to grant closure in order to limit transfer of the liability to the state and delay the inevitable job losses."

The adverse health impacts from diesel particulate matter (DPM) exposure are a well-known global concern. The building evidence has triggered underground mining operations to review existing atmospheric conditions and assess the scale of the challenge faced. South32’s Cannington Mine (Cannington) evaluated the ability to provide a healthy atmosphere from a whole mine approach, taking into account existing preventative controls including: maintenance strategies, fuel quality, mining operations, ventilation provisions, monitoring protocols and effective education and training programs.During the evaluation process, Cannington gave due recognition to the advice and guidance provided in the Queensland Guidance Note 21 (QGN21), the Guidelines of New South Wales’ MDG29 and Mining Industry Advisory Committee (MIAC) of Western Australia. Each of these documents advises a dilution rate of >0.06 m3/s/kW is best for reduction of DPM exposure in underground mines.Achieving the prescribed mine ventilation rate typically results in the need to directly invest significant capital into increasing ventilation infrastructure in order to further dilute contaminants. In today’s economic market of volatile metal prices and increasing pressures to meet regulatory requirements, it can become challenging for established metalliferous operations to create a balance between optimisation of current ventilation infrastructure and capital outlay.In order to obtain and correctly justify the requirements for capital investiture Cannington conducted a ventilation operational analysis for the life-of-operation, identifying the existing air volume envelope was adequate for current and future production rates by optimising existing primary ventilation infrastructure through the implementation of a modified ventilation on demand (VoD) and air conservation system.This process achieved sustainable operating and capital cost reductions without compromising delivery of adequate ventilation to work areas. The process also recognised that engaging mine workers’ ownership of their work areas is crucial to maintaining a technically efficient and operationally robust ventilation system.This paper will concentrate on Cannington’s existing preventative controls, their implementation and their management for the prevention of increased DPM exposure; reducing the risk of both short and long-term health impacts to ‘as low as reasonably achievable’ (ALARA).CITATION:Black, J and Reid, D, 2017.
