Occasionally it is good to consider the past, assess the present and project the future. Curriculum, enrollment, matriculation of graduates and changes in industry which influence mineral education are all relevant for determining what changes will be needed in educational institutions to support growth and development in the United States. It would appear likely that with environmental pressures, energy needs with present stress in fossil fuels and general societal needs for metals and minerals that mining and metallurgical engineering faces a period of growth and may be on the threshold of a new era with a vitality that has not been enjoyed for several decades. The following information is based on material obtained through questionnaires received from twelve schools accredited in mining or mineral engineering (out of 18 in the U.S.), 2 not accredited and 5 which no longer have mineral engineering disciplines. The schools presented do not include the smaller nor larges of the undergraduate programs in mining engineering.

In industry and power production and distribution large quantities of fine wastes are produced. These are above all fly ash and phosphogypsum. Attempts are made to use them as secondary raw materials in industry and construction. Since they contain dangerous and harmful components or are nonhomogeneous their direct application is limited so that they are treated as waste. This paper reports on tests conducted with the aim of agglomerating the mentioned fine industrial wastes by pelletisation. The aim of this resarch was to obtain agglomerated product suitable for handling, transport and dumping. At the same time efforts were made to incapsulate harmful components by producing pellets with protective shells. Next, pellets without binders and with different binders were produced. Strength, resistance to freezing and solubility of pellets were tested. All the fine industrial wastes under survey were found to be suitable for pelletisation. The utilisation of appropriate binders ensures pellet strength required for safe handling and ecologically sound deposition of pelleted Material.

Robotics is topical for mining owing to deterioration of miner's safety as a depth of winning, limited functions of traditional mechanization and automation, rise of miner's labor cost. Mining robot is an autonomous mining machine with a free programmable control that provides a multifunctional use of working head. After analysis of world publications the database “Technological applications of robotics in mining" has been built. In most cases robots are suggested for imitation of miner's motions. The following shapes of robotics had been classified for mining: technological robot as a flexible controlled mining machine, remote manipulator, mine rescue robot. The problems of both non-repeated environment recognition and telepresence without direct visibility must be solved. The more a robots integration is the less investments and the more efficiency are. Computer simulation of robotics-based mining is founded on a base of 6 robots functional models, Petri nets and library of 30 robotized technologies. There are some examples of mine robotization in the paper.

ALTHOUGH much effort has been devoted to the problem, the nature of plastic flow in bcc metals is still not fully understood. Some of the difficulties encountered stem from the scarcity of information on orientation effects and the uncertainty as to the glide system in these metals. In an attempt to provide some of this information, the present investigation was carried out, using zone-refined molybdenum single crystals deformed in tension and in direct shear. Considerable evidence exists to indicate that the primary slip system for molybdenum is (110) <111>.1,2 Figs. 1 and 2 indicate that this is, indeed, the case for direct shear at room temperature (see Ref. 3 for a description of the shear-testing equipment and procedure). Moreover, from Fig. 2, the shear stress on the (123) is lower than that on the (112). This would be the case if, as has been suggested,4,5 slip on these two planes is in reality com-

Due primarily to the publication of the Fitzgerald Report the impact of taxation on the mining industry and the amount of taxes actual- ly paid by the industry have become items of intense debate. However, the discussion has been governed more by impassioned rhetoric than considered logic. It is equally as wasteful to the economy for the mining industry as a low cost efficient export earner to be punitively taxed, as it is for the industry to be given excessive taxation assistance. A comparison of the effect of five tax- ation policies on the cash flow of a capital intensive mining project is presented. The policies considered are Liberal 1969, Liberal 1976 with and without the coal levy, Labor 1975 and Labor 1976. The mining project used in the analysis is modelled on published estimates for the proposed Nebo coal project. The analysis is equally applicable to any large mining or petroleum development.

In a paper recently read before the Institute by Mr. W. A. Goodyear, a useful presentation was made of the subject of the production of&apos; water-gas on a large scale, by the use of a regenerative form of apparatus. By way of supplement to that paper, a brief statement of the details of a plan which was carried out at the works of the Elgin National Watch Company at Elgin, Ill., may be of interest, &apos;although the ultimate result of the working of the producer was not successful or satisfactory. This company had decided to build a gas-works for the supply of illuminating gas to their factory, on a much larger scale than that of the petroleum-works which had very successfully supplied the smaller buildings for many years, and in March, 1882, the material for a gas-making cupola furnace was purchased. This paper describes some experiences in the design of flotation reagent schemes for the efficient flotation of complex gold ores containing free gold and/or gold associated with easily flotable sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite and bornite. Historically, the design of gold flotation reagent schemes has been based primarily on experiences using high dosage levels of water soluble charged collectors such as xanthates and dithiophosphates and carefully controlled regions of pH. This approach has been effective with gold associated with complex sulphide minerals, in particular gold associated with iron sulphides such as pyrite. An alternative two-stage reagent approach is presented that is applicable to certain types of gold ores. This approach involves using very small dosages of uncharged water insoluble collectors at natural ore pH followed by a modified bulk flotation reagent approach for the second stage. The reasons for utilising this approach, when applicable, are discussed and illustrated with examples.

In the past two decades the global metalliferous mineral industry has trended away from pyrometallurgical (pyromet) and towards hydrometallurgical (hydromet) technologies including biometallurgical (biomet) processes. Pyromet, biomet and hydromet technologies have all developed considerably over this period. New projects have been biased or directed by legislation towards supposedly cleaner and greener hydromet and biomet technologies. The environmental cost and energy cost of pyromet production processes for copper and cobalt are compared with comparable hydromet processes using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The æreal costÆ of the global warming obsession and negative public perception of pyrometallurgy include greater carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption per unit, associated with current hydromet technologies. Specific examples for copper and cobalt produced via the different routes are provided. The poor science involved with the global warming hypothesis is discussed. The use of LCA with sensitivity analysis as a decision making tool for mineral processing projects and technology developers is discussed.

Despite the large areas of sedimentary basins in Western Australia, the coal resources are very meagre., This is a serious problem for the State, which-at present-lacks any other alternate source of fuel-for power production.. Located coal deposits are all poor in quality and mostly brown coals of little importance. The best..coal suitable for extraction is at Collie, where a black=sub- bituminous non-coking coal is mined. Most other coals recorded are low grade or lignite, with high ash&apos;and moisture content and a low calorific value. Coal was first discovered in Western Australia in the bed of the Irwin River, 50-miles south-east of Geraldton, by the Gregory brothers, explorers, in the year 18+6,. but although investigated, it has never been developed. The most noteworthy discovery of coal was in the Collie River, 26 miles east of Bunbury, by Arthur Perrin in 1883. Production commenced in 1898 and ever since, Collie has continued to be the State&apos;s sole producing coalfield.

Africa (communication to the Secretary*) :—About fourteen years ago, in southeastern Missouri,I used a method for the wet determination of lead which closely resembles the modified sulphate-chromate method described by Mr.. Guess. The principal difference, however, is, that after dissolving the lead chromate in hydrochloric acid, the chromic acid is determined by means of a standard solution of ferrous sulphate. The method, which I believe is still in use in southeastern Missouri, was found to be convenient and accurate for the determination of lead in the ores and various products of the mills and furnaces in that district, but it was never used for complex ores. USE of autoradiography in diffusion studies offers the advantage that no repeated sectioning is necessary and that the analyses are performed in a simple manner over the continuous range of penetration depths. As part of a program of solid-state physics, it was desired to develop the autoradio-graphic method&apos; quantitatively for use in diffusion studies. Results are reported here for the self-diffusion of silver. Silver was chosen because the existing data are good enough to evaluate the technique." The silver used in this investigation was obtained in the form of ¼ in. diam rods of polycrystalline material, 99.99 pct purity. The radioactive silver, Ag110 (ß, y), was obtained as the nitrate and converted to the chloride for use in a standard cyanide plating bath. The diffusion specimens were 1/2 in. lengths of the rod. With the coming of the month of &apos;October the various sections are beginning active work for the winter. The Colorado, Washington, Montana, and New York Sections are all doing good work in raising funds for the hospital bed at Rheims which is to be a memorial to the members of the A. I. M. E. who gave their lives in the great war. We hope that all the other sections will begin to work with this object in view and will make even a better record than they did with the Belgian Relief Fund. It was with much regret that the President, Mrs. James F. Kemp, and the Secretary, Mrs. Sidney J. Jennings, were obliged to forego the pleasure of attending the Chicago meeting in September. They were, however, ably represented by Mrs. Arthur S. Dwight who gave an informal talk after which was formed the Illinois Section, which has our best wishes for all success-" Over the top and the best of luck!"

Macroscopic characteristics of a complicated mine ventilation is remarked to build an expert system for mine safety in the Taiheiyo coal mine, Hokkaido, Japan. To gain the characteristics a large number of simulation were performed with varying aerodynamic resistance of the branches with regulator in mine ventilation network. The principal results of the study are as follows, (1) Pressure loss diagram for ventilation network with main and auxiliary fans enables capability of air circulation in the network. (2) H-Q (pressure-quantity) diagram gives capacity of air quantity In a network with main and auxiliary fans. (3) When airflow rate, [] through branch qi is changed by opening/closing regulator set in the branch, air flow rate, [], through branch p can be represented by the empirical formula. [ ] where Api and Qp,o are the constant coefficients. (4) Macroscopic characteristics mentioned above are available to make rules in an expert system for escaping route at emergency.

The Department of Control Systems and Instrumentation, VSB - the Technical University Ostrava, has been involved in a project dealing with utilization of landfill gases, when the methane gas utilization and minimization of its release into the atmosphere was the main concern. The landfill site is generally a place, where technology for energy production can be built. The conditions for this technology implementation vary and depend on various factors. This paper is presenting findings and experience gained regarding a method of methane gas utilization for energy production. This method is concerning building bioreactors at the landfill sites, which are already operated. Every bioreactor can be thought of as a process, which is controlled in order to maximize energy production and minimize the methane gas escape into the atmosphere. The bioreactor landfill can represent a number of environmental and cost savings and, at the same time, is able to comply with all legislative issues.

The reaction mechanism for the manganese dioxide reductive dissolution in acidic chloride media in the presence of ferrous/ferric ions are based on theoretical delineation and dual cell experiments. In terms of the Buttler-Volmer equation and chemical kinetic principles, a electrochemical kinetic equation was deduced, which successfully provided a theoretical basis for describing the role of Cl-, Fe2+, Fe3+ and H+ in solution, as well as their interrelationship in manganese dioxide reductive dissolution. Dual cell experimental studies indicate that the increases of Cl- and Fe2 in solution are helpful to accelerate the couple process; while, Fe3and Mn2+ hinder the coupled reaction to some degree. Higher acidity in solution is beneficial to the dissolution of MnO2. All the dual cell experimental results are consistent with the theoretical deduction. This study will be useful to understand the mechanism for the leaching of manganese nodules from the deep ocean, as well as the leaching of manganese dioxide ore from land.

Shotcrete, a useful support material in underground openings, is a sprayed concrete, and, when used with fast-setting agents, is immediately self-supporting. Although shotcrete has been used extensively for tunnel support, the technique has not been readily accepted by the mining industry because of the lack of essential information on such basic items as material properties and rock interaction. The Spokane Mining Research Center (SMRC) of the Bureau of Mines has been active in the field for the past 2 years, including research on fibrous reinforced shotcrete. IIT Research Institute, Chicago, under Bureau of Mines contract, is investigating physical properties of shotcrete as affected by (1) type of process (wet or dry) and (2) fast-set agents and controlle-dset cements. Already the contractor has shown the advantage of a regulated-set cement over normal cement and fast-set additives for the dry process. The regulated-set cements can produce high early strengths with no decrease in ultimate strength.

The final purpose of exploration is to esti- mate the grade and tonnage of the various qualities of ore contained in a given mineral deposit. This estimation cannot be directly carried out on the whole of the ore body. It usually requires four steps: Core Drilling Campaign The ore body is represented by a series of cores further divided into core sections of equal or unequal length. Core Splitting The core sections are longitudinally split into two halves: the first half is kept for various examinations and physical measurements, and stored for further reference; the second half (core sample) is used for determination of the chemical analysis. Core Sample Reduction The chemical analysis cannot be directly per- formed on the core samples. It requires the constitution of assay portions usually weighing from a few decigrams to one gram (more in precious metals assaying) and passing through a 100 or 150 mesh screen.

This report briefly reviews the measurements and interpretation of adhesion forces measured between microscopic probes and substrates having micro- and nanoscaled roughness characteristics that were recently conducted at Michigan Tech using atomic force microscopy. The laboratory study concentrated on both rigid and deformable materials, with the probes larger than the size of roughness features of interacting surfaces. For such systems, a detailed surface characterization in terms of roughness parameters, asperity size and shape, and spacing between asperities, as well as analysis of deformation of materials is required. Analysis of the experimental data can be done with theoretical models, which are suitable for rough surfaces and therefore allows to normalize the measured forces. Alternatively, loading of the probe during adhesion force measurements can be managed properly to control deformations of the nano-scaled surface irregularities. Controlling the deformation reduces and even eliminates the effects of nano-roughness on the probesubstrate contact area, promoting conditions described by the contact mechanics models for the sphere-smooth substrate system.

An important part of underground mine planning and operations involves the reclamation of working areas after blasting before the mining cycle can continue. This is especially true for mining that must use large blasting operations in the vicinity of extensive underground workings. In an effort to develop a rational procedure for estimating mine damage produced by blasting, underground rock fall has been assessed for a large-scale blasting operation in oil shale. The amount of mine damage has been quantified in terms of manshifts of effort required to reclaim underground working areas after blasting. This has been further broken down into the three main phases of reclamation, i.e., scaling and excavation, rockbolting, and miscellaneous repairs on ventilation, utilities, etc. Different types of openings have also been assessed including level tunnels, incline drifts and rooms. The effect of repeated blasting on mine damage has also been documented with initial blasts producing more damage than subsequent blasts.
