The intrinsic value of iron ore depends on its physical and chemical characteristics. For example, silica and alumina are unwanted elements, downgrading iron grade and adversely affecting high temperature processing, attracting penalties in smelter contracts. For this reason, an informed knowledge of processing characteristics and product quality of the ore is valuable and cost effective during mine planning and processing.Ore variability is a significant factor that affects metallurgical behaviour and efficiency of ore processing equipment. Ore of sufficient chemical and physical quality needs to be modelled, mined, processed and usually blended. Feed and product assays are commonly used to assess potential ore upgradability. However, assays alone cannot be all informative of actual processing response given the variability of the physical properties of the ore.This study investigates the potential benefit of implementing a geometallurgical approach during the commissioning stage of the Kings deposit, part of the Solomon Iron Ore project in Western Australia. Kings drill hole database information, ie geological, textural and geochemical data, together with the results of metallurgical test work were used for geometallurgical analysis and modelling. Three main ore types were identified at Kings, namely channel iron deposit (CID), bedded iron deposits (BID) and Detrital Iron Deposit (DID). Additional classifications were utilised to better characterise these units in terms of their physical properties.Bulk sampling for each ore type was carried out across the deposit for metallurgical testing. Multivariate statistical models were developed for prediction of product quality for each geometallurgical unit. A new approach for modelling yield based on ore upgrade factors is introduced. An improved experimental procedure to measure contact angle has been consolidated with coal surface preparation involving polishing with abrasive paper, alumina powder, and a cloth, followed by ultrasonic and mechanical cleaning. Specifically, the captive-bubble measuring technique has been compared with the sessile-drop technique and the former has been recommended for the examination of the hydrophobic properties of coal surfaces. Results of the research program, which is currently under way, on the examination of the effect of the nature, amount, size, and distribution of mineral inclusions in coal, on its wettability are briefly reviewed.

The Minera Candelaria concentrator was commissioned in August 1994, and in October 1997 it doubled its grinding capacity. The concentrator was designed to treat 56,000 metric tonnes of copper ore with a primary crusher, two grinding circuits, pebble crushing, and flotation. The grinding circuit includes two 11.2 m (36 ft) diameter by 4.6 m (15 ft) long semi-autogenous (SAG) mills, each fitted with a 12 MW motor. Throughout the history of Candelaria, different strategies have been developed to maximize the plant's operational time, strategies that include increasing the life of the SAG mill liners and reducing the time involved in changing these elements. This work describes the improvements made in the design of the liners, the change planning, and a new strategy to change the liners with the purpose of increasing their use and throughput.

Four taconite plants were studied to establish the extent of hazard to plant personnel which exists based on long-term exposure to noise. The criteria for evaluation include the 90 dBA and 85 dBA summations of partial exposures. Data from extensive interviews were used to determine all work stations or locations which employees occupied and how much time they spent in ach location in a typical working day. Noise level measurements at every designated location were then made. By means of a computer program, these time and noise level data were us d to find the optimum noise reductions which would be required throughout each plant to meet both noise criteria. Subsequently, each plant was examined in detail so that the apparent sources of noise for each of the locations requiring noise reduction could be delineated. In tabular form, this report presents the hazardous locations for each plant, the existing noise level, the optimum noise reduction which would be required to meet the current and proposed laws, and the sources of noise which produce the existing noise level.

The manufacture of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is not only energy-intensive but also releases a significant volume of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere. In addition, OPC in concrete often causes premature deterioration that affects the durability of concrete structures. This paper explores an alternative to OPC concrete called geopolymer concrete.The present research utilises low calcium (class F) fly ash as the source material to produce geopolymer concrete. Several factors that affect the mix design process such as mix proportion, curing time, and curing temperature have been studied. In addition, the long-term properties such as drying shrinkage, creep, and exposure to sulfate attack are also being investigated.The test data presented in this paper reveal that geopolymer concrete possesses high compressive strength, undergoes very little drying shrinkage and moderately low creep, and shows excellent resistance to sulfate attack. The result is extremely promising and demonstrates the sustainability of geopolymer concrete as a construction material for a sustainable future.

Much has been published concerning the subject of coal preparation as related to electric power generation however it is always a most vital topic for both utilities and coal producers, It also constitutes a field of study that is never finished since new concepts and changing demands continually require altered perspectives. One graphic illustration that has been used to emphasize the rapidity with which times are changing is the fact that during World War I, a station that consumed 1000 tons per day was looked upon as a large central station, while today some single generators require 1500 tons during the same period, For further emphasis, at that time a 20,000 horsepower turbo-generator was a mighty large machine; today, a unit of this size is planned for driving the boiler water feed pump required for a single large main unit. During the past ten years alone, electric utilities have more than doubled their percentage of coal consumed as compared to the total market. They now account for approximately 40% of the United States consumption and one-third of all production including export, Conversely, approximately 70% of all U. S. steam electric generation is by coal and this percentage is expected to increase. It is further predicted that utility consumption will increase from the current 160,000,000 tons per year to between 400 and 500 million tons in 1975 which is approximately equal to todays total production

In an underground coal mining environment, a frictional ignition may be defined as the ignition of an explosive air/ methane/coal dust mixture by mining machinery. As the use of power loading equipment has become more widespread, frictional ignition incidents have increased. There have been many fatalities and injuries from this cause including the death of eleven miners in Sydney coalfield of Nova Scotia, Canada in 1979. This paper reports on the findings of a preliminary study carried out under the auspices of the Coal Research Laboratories, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada. The objective of this study has been to identify a Longwall face cutting system that is inherently safer than the conventional shearer loaders used in Nova Scotia.

Existing classifications of mining and construction equipment have had major deficiencies. They often lack organization, balance, and have remained obscure. Particularly when proceeding to great.er resolution these deficiencies have proven crippling. By adopting "Classes", "Groups" f "Types" and "Kinds" at successive degrees of refinement, a "Taxonomy" is developed based on clear visual differentiation or on a "Morphology??. This symbiotic application, adopted from the Biological Sciences, yields clear, simple and unambiguous results. Supporting this effort are guidelines for easily and credibly sketching equipment which are also distinctive. Numerous illustrative examples are provided. Communications are improved and the engineer obtains a confident feel for the equipment at hand.

THE use of copper sulfate for improving the flotation behavior of sphalerite is probably at least 15 years old. The original discovery of its activating influence is somewhat obscure. The story goes that in the mill at Mascot, Tenn., its favorable action was discovered by accident, early in 1914, as follows: The original laboratory test work on a sphalerite ore gave favorable flotation results, but after a mill had been built the flotation concentration of the ore was very unsatisfactory. In diagnosing the probable reasons, one fact pointed out was that the laboratory test machine had been constructed of bronze whereas the commercial machine allowed pulp to come in contact only with wood and iron. A plate of sheet copper was hung in the flotation machine and results immediately improved. At first fanciful explanations of electrolytic and electrostatic behavior were given credence, but when the copper plate was removed and a small amount of copper sulfate substituted in the pulp an even more favorable result was obtained. Toward the end of 1914 copper sulfate was also adopted in the acid flotation circuit of the Butte and Superior Copper Co. Just who is responsible for the original discovery the present writers do not know: It seems strange that in that era of flotation litigation this discovery was not patented. While for pragmatic purposes it may be sufficient to know that the mere addition of copper compounds to a flotation pulp is sufficient to activate the flotation of the sphalerite, for scientific purposes it is quite desirable to know more about how the action takes place. It is the purpose of this paper to present certain evidence dealing with the mechanism of the beneficial effect. The description of the effect as activation in contradistinction to depression is now common in both the English and German languages. It makes no assumptions as to whether the zinc sulfide surfaces have been filmed with copper compounds. In fact, the principal differences of opinion expressed in the literature deal with whether there is an actual formation of CuS (or even Cu2S) on the surface of the sphalerite.

Most copper refineries use conventional wheel systems to cast anodes. over a period of time the copper moulds that are used become warped and cracks develop. To control mould warpage, the mould's are either rejected after a certain warpage is reached, or the shape is restored by mechanical means. The cracks, unless they are very severe, are repaired by a peening process. Even with regular maintenance to control warpage and cracks, the moulds have a limited useful life. If warpage and cracks are not controlled, anode quality deteriorates and tankhouse operations are seriously affected. -An intensive study was initiated to develop means of controlling mould warpage which culminated in the d?evelopment of technology to control mould warpage to within ±1. 5 mm, and at the same time effectively contr0l: cracking and significantly increase the mould life-. The warpage control has been achieved by using a unique mould design. Mould cavities are present on both sides of the mould and periodic inverting controls the wa-rpage in the cavities. The mould casting procedure has been developed and all production wheels have been converted to the new mould design. The performance characteristics of these moulds will be detailed. 21

An in-depth process model was developed for the pyrometallurgical, off-gas systems and water balance of the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter. This model was used to assess plant capacity with changing concentrate grades, increased throughput and tighter environmental emissions under a range of potential future operating conditions. Comparison of modelled results allowed for flow sheet optimisation across a range of metrics including sustainability, processing capacity and costs. Process modelling software, METSIM® (ver 2020.06 by METSIM International), was used to simulate the flash furnace, integrated electric slag cleaning furnace, Pierce-Smith converters, matte granulation, waste heat boiler, hot gas handling equipment, wet gas cleaning plant and acid plant. The METSIM® model was divided into three separate, yet interconnected models: metals, off-gas and water balancing. This allowed for improved modelling efficiency and traceability while minimising manual error. The METSIM® model was supported by inputs from other specialised software. Chemical thermodynamics software, FactSage™ (ver 8.2 by GTT Technologies), was used to establish relationships for the flash furnace fluxing strategy and determine the operating temperature. Arena® (ver 16.0 by Rockwell Automation), a discrete event modelling software, was used to simulate material movements within the aisle as well as Pierce-Smith converter operation, allowing for integration with upstream and downstream systems. A dynamic data exchange (DDE) was used to connect the results of each software package, interfacing through Excel® (version 4203 by Microsoft). The integration between models provided a streamlined approach to test capacity, bottlenecks, water consumption and emissions under a range of operating conditions, enabling a more robust process. Further downstream modelling techniques were used to assess mechanical equipment. METSIM® outputs provided key parameters for combustion assessments using computational fluid dynamics and finite element analysis for the furnace mechanical design.

Crushing plants are widely used around the world as a pre-processing step in the mineral and mining industries and as standalone processing plants in the aggregates industry. Despite automation and different advanced model predictive control, a lot of the process is still managed by operators. The operators affect a lot of the performance. The numbers of the improvement they can achieve are at least as big as the advanced control algorithms?, today. Therefore, it is also important to train the operators so they know how to behave in different situations. Models for crushers and other production units have been developed during the years and the latest add is the different units? dynamic behavior being brought in, which gives the crushing plants dynamic time dependant performance. This can be used as a simulator for operators training. By connecting a Human Machine Interface (HMI) to a dynamic simulator with the models incorporated, a training environment for operators can be achieved. In this paper, a dynamic crushing plant simulator implemented in MATLAB/SIMULINK has been connected to an HMI via a PLC. The HMI is placed in a control room at the university and complemented with monitors showing sequences from the process connected to the simulations, thus creating a realistic control room for training. In the created training environment, the operators can be trained under realistic conditions. Simple training scenarios and how they could be simulated are discussed. Apart from the increased level of knowledge and experience among the operators, the time is an important factor. While a real crushing plant is still being built, the operators to be can already be trained, saving a lot of the commissioning time. "(1) The radiological appearances of pneumokoniosis on the Kolar Gold Field is described in detail. The characteristic abnormality is the. presence of a diffuse, fine annular and punctate mottling. (2) The frequency of symptoms could not be determined with any degree of accuracy, but it is believed that symptoms are absent and there is no incapacity until profuse radiological mottling is present, i.e., after long exposure to dust. (3) There is an increased predisposition to tuberculosis, which, if it occurs, affects the prognosismost unfavourably.(4) Pathological examination shows that the radiological mottling is due to the presence inthe lung of numerous small dust-cdll aggregates (up to T5 mm. in dia.) deposited around the smaller bronchioles and blood-vessels.(5) The dust-cell aggregates are relatively acellular but when tuberculosis is superadded thereis an excessive cellular and fibrotic reaction.(6) The difficulties of defining the radiological and pathological appearances of early pneumokoniosisare discussed.(7) The incidence of pneumokoniosis in 7,653 workmen with 5 or more years’ undergroundservice was 43-75%, but it is suggested that in future the incidence will be appreciably lower.(8) The methods of- dust production and the chemistry of mine dust are described. It isshown that the free silica-content of air-borne mine -dust is relatively low.(9) The aetiology'of the pneumokoniotic lesion is discussed."

The Sentinel open pit copper mine, operated by First Quantum Minerals Ltd, is located in the North West province of Zambia. The Sentinel orebody is a sediment-hosted, structurally modified deposit in which mineralisation is contained in the phyllite formation, which occurs as a series of layered, continuous sheets having a northerly 20 to 30⁰ dip. The persistent nature of the geological structure can lead to the generation of large slabs when joints are relatively close together or very large blocks when joints are more widely spaced. With standard blasting methodologies, the challenging fragmentation most commonly occurs in the stemming zone and blast interfaces, reducing excavation rates and increasing the risk of crusher bridging events and reduced throughput. A generalised approach to increase powder factor would increase in drill and blast costs and would not be sufficient to target the specific cause of the challenging fragmentation. Implementing differential blast energy based on post blast requirements for different material type, such as ore and waste, and rock mass characteristics is not new in the mining industry. High-energy blasts for ore aim to produce finer materials, enhancing downstream processes such as crushing and grinding, while reducing power consumption and increasing throughput. Conversely, waste rock often requires less energy in order to deliver optimised fragmentation for loading and hauling efficiency. Identifying and applying optimum blast energy to specific material type and geological domains will not only ensure smoother and efficient operations throughout downstream processes, but will have a direct impact on overall profitability of the entire operation. This paper will describe the methods used to model and implement differential blasting across a range of material types in order to deliver the required blast outcomes for ore and waste and the impact on downstream processes and drill and blast unit cost.

The mining sector has been a leader in investing in safety improvement initiatives, yet relatively few mining organisations can accurately track the positive effects of these initiatives or identify areas that may require more attention. The consequences of not taking safety seriously are severe, and unfortunately injuries and fatalities are continuing to occur across the mining sector (Brady, 2019). There is a tendency to turn to lag indicators such as All Injury Frequency Rate (AIFR), Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (TRIFR), and Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) to track these outcomes. As outlined below these approaches are inherently flawed and a renewed focus is needed on indicators within the control of leaders, indicators that have high predictive validity for future events and data that is used in a way to enable learning and change.
