This report describes the engineering work leading to the design of an underground coal mine piping system to transport approximately 2,000,000 cubic feet per day of methane gas to the surface from degasification holes drilled horizontally into the coalbed in existing coal mines. Safety instrumentation for detection of gas leaks and provisions for automatic emergency shutdown are included in the design. It also includes specifications for a safe system of handling gas, water, and drill cuttings during drilling of the horizontal holes and recommendations for compressor and metering facilities at the surface. The main pipeline is recommended to be constructed of polyethylene plastic pipe joined by a butt fusion method while lateral lines and separator and meter piping at the horizontal holes are recommended to be screwed steel piping. The materials used are to be resistant to the forces of impact exerted by falling rock. The pipelines are to be suspended from the ceiling with pipe hangers. All steel components are protected from chemical corrosion by applying protective coatings and the vertical casing to the surface is protected from electrolytic corrosion by a rectifier station. Methane gas detectors monitor the mine atmosphere to detect the presence of gas leaks and a pneumatic plastic tubing line provides for control of the safety shutdown system. Both the recommended design and the required construction procedures are in compliance with the applicable Federal codes for coal mine safety.

There are many reasons why the US mineral and primary metals industry is in its present state. Undoubtedly, a flood of imported goods in all sectors is playing a major role in the plight of our raw materials industry. Domestic industry is becoming increasingly aware of the importance of its international competitiveness. And we are beginning to wonder what is happening to our technological edge. A number of factors affect the international competitiveness. Engineers cannot do much about some of these factors - labor costs, tax policy, government relations, interest rates, dollar strength, and labor-management relations. Something can be done about technology, however. Some say technology is so easily transferable today. But I would like to believe that we have the ability to apply it better than others. Not too many years ago, "made in Japan" meant cheap and shoddy products. Today, Japan has completely changed its image. The US is beginning to feel the threat from Japan's low-cost, defect-free products with dependable delivery. With worldwide recession and the strength of the dollar, we were shocked at the sudden weakness that developed in America's industries, not only in the international market, but domestically as well. What went wrong and what can we do about it? Senior executives from 300 large American manufacturing companies were surveyed. These executives believe US companies must: • invest in more efficient plants and equipment (27%); • invest in more research and development (23%); • improve the quality of service to customers (23%); and • adopt more aggressive marketing tactics and strategies (14%). Are we not doing enough research? The US has nearly four times as many people engaged in research and spends four times as much for research as Japan (Fig. 1). There is little doubt about the excellence of the US performance in basic science as indicated by the number of Nobel prize recipients. Japan has produced only four winners since World War II. Look at technology trade of five countries (Fig. 2). Again, US performance has been remarkable. An interesting observation here, is that the United Kingdom, another country with economic woes, is also in the black, West Germany and Japan, both with trade surpluses, are net technology importers. It is apparent that the US' performance in the commercialization of new knowledge is much more in question. Japan had $50 billion of trade surpluses with the US last year, which led to some friction between Washington, DC and Tokyo. Comparing the technology trade of Japan and the US in more detail, Japan imports disproportionately large amounts of technology from the US and Europe. This data is rather old, 1978, but the general trend is not too different even today. It is generally believed that scientific research leads to innovative technology, then to economic payoff. But, after seeing the current technological challenge by Japan, we are forced to change this traditional view. Investment in research may eventually lead to economic payoff, but not directly. There is a middle ground between new knowledge and its commercialization. This is an area where the Japanese have been successful. Until the 1970s, many western companies licensed patents to Japan for quick profits. But, in recent years, these companies have become more discrete about the terms of technological transfer. As a result, a number of scientists and engineers are expressing deep concern over the future of technological developments in Japan. Based on the investigation and study of the topography, microstructure and composition of the buildups which form in the surface of carbon sleeve in continuous annealing furnace for lowand medium-grade non-oriented silicon steel produced by CSP process, combined with production process of silicon steel, the mechanism and major causes for forming buildups of carbon sleeve are discussed from the factors such as CSP process, the quality of carbon sleeve and so forth. Meanwhile, some countermeasures to reduce the formation of the buildups are put forward.

INTRODUCTION Referring to a ground support system as a 'band-aid' borders on getting cute, but the application of cable slings in U.S. mining is somewhat analogous. Where problems in the roof or rib require additional support, the versatile cable sling is the answer in a variety of conditions. To fully understand how and why cable slings are used today we must briefly review their development history. Much of the thrust over the last five to seven years in ground support fixtures has been the development of hybrid systems. Taking the best of two or more existing roof bolt fixtures and marrying them into a new fixture which exhibits the good characteristics without the bad of the parent systems. Resin point anchored mechanical bolts, continuous threaded rebar bolts, and others have all be- come important fixtures in rock mass stabilization. HYBRID GROUND SUPPORT SYSTEM The cable sling system is also a hybrid, both in its parentage and in its ground support characteristics. See figure 1. The studies [1-3] have revealed that in case of electrically conducting media the influence of electromagnetic body forces on the liquid can be a rather effective mean of such a control. The current paper investigates some physical conformities governing the behaviour of binary liquid metal systems with a immiscibility region under electromagnetic processing designated to produce ingots with homogeneous structure.The main idea of the proposed method rests upon a concept that the electromagnetic forces in the melt are similar to gravity forces due to buoyancy effects in space and have a selective ability to influence the melt components dependent on their conductivity. In crossed electric E and magnetic B fields (fig.I) each component of the medium is influence by the force density f = jXB, where the current density j is determined by the conductivity a of the component j = -oE. When this force is directed parallel or non-parallel to the gravity vector, the buoyancy of suspended particles can be controlled accordingly.This phenomenon allows one to create a situation in binary system, when the sums of all mass forces (gravity and electromagnetic) affecting every component are equal, and two components are under conditions of equilibrium with respect to each other. These conditions are called quasiweightlessness, which is generated in the melt by the electromagnetic forces."

The Miami In-situ mine of BHP Copper is located in Globe-Miami, Arizona. The mine leaches mineralized leach capping over a supergene enriched sulfide deposit, and has produced over 500 million lbs of copper during the last 50 years. The Miami unit has identified several opportunities to enhance and expand in-situ production. A computer block model consisting of strict geologic controls, mineralogy, and metallurgical data was developed to assist in the determination of the leachable copper resource. An understanding of the accessibility and solubility of the resource to leaching solutions and the integration of hydrogeologic and hydrometallurgical information was necessary for completion of this project.

Use of Impact Crushing for the Enrichment of Low-Grade Colemanite Concentrates This paper presents the results of an investigation into the enrichment of -25+3 mm low grade colemanite concentrates exploiting differential breakage properties of various minerals associated within the ore sample. Boric acid production process requires concentrates containing at least 42 per cent B2O3, hence concentrates below this grade either stock piled or further treated to increase B2O3 content. The low grade concentrate is obtained as a by-product of Emet Colemanite Concentrator and the B2O3 content may vary around 37 - 38 per cent. The sample used in the experimental studies assays 37.52 per cent B2O3. In the experimental procedures the sample was crushed using a laboratory size horizontal shaft impact crusher and the products were classified into different size fractions by screening so that any improvement by size could be observed. In the tests the effects of parameters such as the revolution speed of the crusher and heat treatment was checked. Test results prove that boron contents show a tendency to increase as the particle size decreases. As a result of the experimental studies a colemanite concentrate assaying 42.13 per cent B2O3 is produced with 76.55  per cent recovery. Arsenic content is seen to change inversely proportional with the B2O3 content of the concentrate such that it drops from 1016 ppm from the as received sample to 676 ppm in the concentrate.

A fundamental study was conducted with the purpose of establishing an environmentally sound recovery process for recycling of valuable metals, by combining scraps containing such metals. As an example, direct extraction and recovery of neodymium (Nd) in magnet scraps was investigated by utilizing liquid metal as an extraction medium. It was found that liquid magnesium (Mg) is a suitable extraction medium and can extract Nd from iron alloys with high efficiency at around 1100 K. The newly developed extraction apparatus for Nd is a mechanically simple and static device without moving parts, where the Mg extraction medium circulates due to differences in the temperature inside the reaction vessel. This developed device can simultaneously accomplish continuous extraction of metal Nd from scraps, re-extraction of Mg from Mg-Nd alloy and the eventual recovery of pure Mg. As a result, metal Nd with 98 % purity was directly recovered from magnet scraps under certain conditions. It was also shown that the extraction agent Mg could be reused. The results of this investigation show the possibility of establishing a new process for the direct extraction of Nd in pure metal form without oxidization.

The past several decades have seen the rapid expansion of multinational mining companies? exploration and production activities around the globe. This trend has resulted from a number of factors, including increased demand for resources as a result of worldwide economic growth, the diminishment of known and proven reserves, rising commodity prices, technology improvements, and the liberalization of investment regimes in developing countries with significant natural resources. With those opportunities, however, come associated risks and significantly increased legal compliance obligations that may be imposed by various bodies. That includes domestic regulations, as well as foreign civil and criminal laws with extraterritorial reach. A failure to adhere to those laws can have dire consequences, including substantial monetary fines and penalties, severe damage to a company?s reputation, and even jail time for individual company employees.

Micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) is an X-ray imaging technique that produces high-resolution 3D computerised ‘virtual’ models of geological specimens based on the X-ray attenuation of different materials in the specimen. The ‘virtual’ specimens are made up of voxels, the 3D equivalent of pixels, each assigned a gray value based on X-ray absorption. Micro-CT has enormous potential for allowing non-destructive, digital analysis of structure and composition when the mineralogical phases can be digitally separated. However, variation in X-ray flux between scans results in highly variable grayscale values for identical materials. Consequently, materials usually have to be segmented manually, which is subjective, inaccurate, labour-intensive and time consuming. Here we present a protocol and imaging software package that can be used to accurately and precisely extract quantifiable information in a repeatable and objective fashion. The software will allow the separation, visualisation, measurement and analysis of spatial and volumetric distribution of different mineral phases without damaging the specimen. This paper explains the potential use of this protocol and software package to ultimately allow automatic segmentation and quantification of gold in drill core samples, removing subjectivity and inaccuracies from data processing.

"The Code was developed in 2004 through the Collaboration Agreement between Institution of Mining Engineers of Chile (IIMCh) and the Ministry of Mining (Chile) in Dec 2002. It is an amalgamation of current practices with respect to standards and procedures for exploration prospects, mineral resources, and reserves for the purpose of public reporting. Certification is required to prepare and issue information on mineral assets according to the guidelines that regulate the technical, economic, and environmental aspects that satisfy the conditions set by the Chilean capital and financial markets.The Mineral Resources Committee of the Instititution of Mining Engineers of Chile (IIMCh) is pleased to introduce theCode for the Certification of Exploration Prospects, Mineral Resources and Reserves which is the result of a Collaboration Agreement between the IIMCh and the Ministry of Mining established in December, 2002.This code synthetizes the present practice of the mining industry in regard to standards and procedures applied to exploration prospects, mineral resources, and reserves with the purpose of reporting publicly on financial instruments based on these mine assets in the capital markets. These standards follow general criteria already adopted and applied by capital markets in those countries characterized by a very dynamic and well developed mining sector such as Australia, Canada, Southafrica, United Kingdom, and others. The work done by the Mineral Resources Committee of the IIMCh has had the recognition of the Combined Reserves International Reporting Standards Committee (CRIRSCO) that leads the establishement of an international code in these matters. CRIRISCO is an entity formed by representatives of the countries previously mentioned, a representative of the Society of Mining Engineers of the UStates and a representative of the IIMCh. "The traditional investment casting foundries use batch melting and chunky running systems to produce casting components. This method leaves the energy saving issue as subsidiary one. In our research project, one of the partners, the AEROMET international PLC provides the thin wall aluminium component ""filter housing"" for test. The AERO MET uses traditional casting route to produce the filter housing, which only gives 5% --10% yield. In this paper, numerical simulation method is used to analyse filling and solidification of the casting running system. The CRIMSON running system of the filter housing is designed by using casting simulation software, MAGMAS and Flow3D. By working with AEROMET, various configurations of the casting running systems were tested and analysed. Using them ultiple life cycle approach, the energy content of new process is compared with traditional one. It indicates that the CRIMSON process only uses 36% of energy consumed by the traditional route.IntroductionThe investrnent casting is a metal for ming process using expendable patterns, which is a standard casting technique and is widely used to produce quality parts. Its accuracy, versatility and integrity tie itself to important and precious engineering components in Aerospace industry. However, traditional investrnent casting process usually uses chunky runner system and gravity filling method. It not only reduces the casting yield of the product but also causes the pouring defect during the casting. As author's previous research showed that gravity filling method pouring basin and down sprue are two main resources of entraimnent defects generation. No matter how good the running system is, entraimnent defects such as double oxide films (DOF) and bubbles will I get into the casting to cause problem."

"Molten salt electrolysis is a proven technology for the extraction of metals -- all· the world's primary aluminum is produced in this manner. The unique properties of molten salts also make them excellent media in which to treat a variety of forms of waste. Of special note in this regard is electrolysis in molten oxides, a concept put forward by the author, initially as a ""clean technology"" for producing primary metal. However, in the context of waste treatment, electrolysis in molten oxides is a process offering the prospect of changing the-valence of dissolved heavy metals while making pure oxygen gas as the main by-product. Laboratory tests conducted at a temperature of 1550°C on chromate sludge dissolved in an melt composed of Al2O3, SiO2; CaO, and MgO have confirmed electrochemical production of oxygen on a carbon-free anode. IntroductionMolten salt electrolysis is the electrolytic decomposition of a compound dissolved in an ionic melt. The prime example of this process can be found in the production of aluminum. The compound, alumina (Al2O3)' derived from the mineral bauxite, is dissolved in an ionic melt comprising a multicomponent solution of cryolite (Na3AlF6)' aluminum fluoride (AlF3)' and calcium fluoride (CaF2,). The products of electrolysis are molten aluminum and carbon dioxide, the latter due to the attendant consumption of the carbon anode. Primary aluminum is produced in a reactor known as the Hall cell.' Alternatively, the compound undergoing electrolytic decomposition can be derived from waste. Processing in molten salts, with their capacity to dissolve materials to very high concentrations compared to those attainable in aqueous solutions, can be rather advantageous. High solubilities lead to high limiting current densities, and this, in tum, results in high productivities: For a primer on molten salt electrolysis and a review of the basic literature in the field of molten salts the reader is directed to an earlier publication of the author (1)."

SIDOR has developed a setup model for a roughing mill with edger that optimizes the position of the edger for a better control on the width, optimizes the efficiency of the mill for controlling of the profile of reductions and increments of the speed rolling and improves dimensional performance. This model consider as data entry, the number of passing, incoming and finish thickness and width, hardness and temperature of the material. The setup model is based on the equations of Ekelund for the width spread calculation and estimates of the rolling force. Additionally this model employ a Newton's algorithm for resolving the optimal position of the edger. The preset values calculated by setup model is the horizontal screw position, vertical screw position (edger), threading and rolling speed, some parameters calculated for the correction of ski. In the revamping of the roughing mill of hot rolling of SIDOR, C.A, carried out in January of 2005, it was implemented this setup model and the coefficients and parameters were adjusted for the first 15 days. Starting from there the values of preset, send to roughing mill are calculated by this setup model. The current indicators show an enhancement of 18% in the roughing mill effectiveness and a decrease about 37% in the mill stop by overload in the motors.

Sampling protocols and metallurgical flow sheets should be designed to suit the style of mineralisation in question. In support, the a priori need for evaluation programs is the characterisation of the mineralisation type(s) and domain definition. The proportion and size of gold particles has a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling protocols and metallurgical processes employed. Within the coarse- to-fi ne gold spectrum, the samplability of a deposit ranges from relatively simple for fine-grained disseminated particles, through to difficult for coarse gold mineralisation. Conversely, metallurgical processing may be relatively simple for coarse gold ore and more difficult for very fi ne gold ores. Most deposits contain a proportion of both particle size types. The nature of mineralisation, mineralogy and associated gold particle sizing can only be determined by preliminary sampling to facilitate testing. Mineralogical studies, focussing on ore mineralogy and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required as part of wider paragenetic and geometallurgical investigations. This paper discusses key issues and presents a methodology for the determination of gold particle size in coarse gravity-gold ores to support sampling optimisation and which also contributes to metallurgical characterisation.

CrusherMapperTM - A New Tool for Crusher Condition Monitoring The efficiency of mineral processing plants is entirely dependent on the availability of the plant equipment critical path. This typically concerns comminution circuits consisting of primary crushers and primary grinding mills. Crusher and mill availability are determined by the frequency and duration of maintenance shutdowns, which are primarily driven by the need for replacement of sacrificial liners. The change of crusher and mill liner shape over respective life cycles also strongly affects plant efficiency. It is therefore highly desirable to accurately monitor the condition of mills and crushers in order to optimise plant efficiency through maximised availability and targeted liner shape. Traditional comminution liner and other production parameter condition monitoring has been attempted through ineffective methods which prevent satisfactory management of crusher and mill maintenance and reduce operational control. This situation has recently dramatically improved for grinding mills through the development and commercial deployment of MillMapperÖ, a technology based on three-dimensional laser scanning data and dedicated software (Franke, Lichti and Stewart, 2006; Franke and Lichti, 2007; 2008; Franke, 2008; Franke, Redman, Johnson and Michalek, 2009). At the time of writing in late 2009, MillMapperÖ is in successful use at a rate of approximately 170 surveys and associated reports per annum at processing plants in Australasia, South America, North America and Africa. This paper presents the introduction of CrusherMapperÖ, the MillMapperÖ equivalent for crushers. CrusherMapperÖ also utilises high density, high accuracy laser scanning data, and features dedicated algorithms for three-dimensional monitoring of wear on crusher concaves and mantles. This facilitates the detection of wear hot spots or zones or localised liner failures, and accurate forecasting of reline tonnages and dates. It also for the first time provides the means to establish optimised concave and mantle shapes in order to achieve production targets. In contrast to any other currently utilised condition monitoring method, CrusherMapperÖ data collection can occur remotely and does not require any shutdown or crusher isolation. This method therefore does not interrupt crusher production while at the same time eliminating any confined space risk normally associated with taking measurements inside the crusher cavity.

The industrial processing of ores containing precious metals such as gold is generally very mining site specific, e. g. McQuiston and Shoemaker (1985), vanZyl et. a1. (1988), Fuerstenau and Hendrix (1990), and Hausen et. a1. (1990). The variety of various mineral processing techniques employed is extensive and includes size reduction, size classification, gravity separation, roasting, cyanidation, chemical and/or bacterial leaching, ion exchange and/or solvent extraction, and froth flotation. Gold occurs in the earth's crust on the average in very low concentration estimated by various sources to be between two and five parts per billion. For a specific ore deposit to be considered as an economic source of gold, generally a concentration of near one part-per million (one gram / Mton) or more is required. From a mineralogical viewpoint, gold often occurs in its native or free form. However, it can also occur as gold compounds of telluride, antimony, and selenium contained within either sulfide minerals such as pyrite, arsenopyrite. and pyrrhotite or, to a less extent, within silicate, oxide, and carbonate minerals. In many locations, alloying of gold with silver is found. The optimal processing method for recovering gold is determined by many factors such as the mineralogy of the gold bearing minerals as well as the associated mineralogy of the gangue minerals, the type of liberation profile of the gold bearing minerals upon' size reduction, and the particle size of the gold itself. Free or native gold particles can vary in size from the extreme of large nuggets to very finely disseminated gold associated in a complex sulfide mineral matrix. Typically free gold particles of several hundred microns or larger are efficiently recovered by one or more of a number of gravity based techniques due to the large specific gravity differential of gold (19.3 to 15) versus typical gangue minerals (5 to 2.7). When gold is associated with a sulfide (usually pyrite) matrix, historically most industrial plants involving size reduction and subsequent liberation have operated in a size range of 50 to 80 percent less than 75 microns. Grinding finer than this has been normally not economical unless the ore has a high gold content in the feed ore.

This study introduces a machine learning strategy to optimize icy regolith extraction from the Shackleton-de Gerlache Ridge using autonomous mining equipment. The model incorporates key parameters—distance, road gradient, vehicle load, speed, recharge logistics, and regolith water content—into a cost framework for excavation, hauling, and dumping. Regression models estimate energy and time requirements; classification predicts terrain navigability; clustering groups craters for efficiency; and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) determines optimal routing and scheduling. The system adapts to a six-month daylight cycle to maximize productivity and minimize costs, enabling intelligent planning for sustained lunar resource extraction under extreme environmental and logistical constraints.

Reclamation of surface mined lands has two basic objectives: (1) the elimination or abatement of undesirable environmental conditions, and (2) the restoration of mined land to its former or more productive uses. This paper addresses some of the planning concepts and site factors that influence the selection of suitable land uses for surface mined lands. Three planning concepts included in the discussion are: (1) mine land planning, (2) comprehensive land use planning, and (3) environmental site planning. The site factors that will influence the selection of an appropriate land use have been grouped into three categories: (1) legal, (2) geographic, and (3) natural. The natural factors are further subdivided into three groupings: geomorphology, soils, and climate.
