The research reported here characterizes ultrasonic ranging sensors for autonomous navigation on underground mine mobile equipment. Because ultrasonic rangers are inexpensive, have no moving parts, have no lenses to clean, are small and unobtrusive, and can measure distances in dusty environments, they are especially sui ted to underground mi ne environments. The investigation began with laboratory tests of field of view, angle of incidence, intersensor variation, and ranging accuracy of individual rangers and a ring array of 24 sensors. The results showed the sensors have good accuracy and low variability. Additional experiments at AHAX' s Henderson mine Showed the sensors could accurately and reliably measure rib features, convex and concave corners, and drift intersections. The results showed that when used and analyzed properly, the sensor data may be used reliably for underground mobile equipment navigation.

The adsorption kinetics of AuBr4 on Dowex ® -21K ion-exchange resin were studied and found to be independent of the initial gold, bromine, and base metals concentrations. A commercially-available undivided hypochlorite generating cell was used to generate bromine from simulated mixed halide (Br-/CI-) solutions. Electrolyses were performed with solutions containing very low Br' ion concentrations. The current efficiencies were 80-90%, and Br- ion utilization was maximized. A detailed economic assessment was made considering the capital and the operating costs for a 1000 mtpd gold ore processing plant. The toxicity and discharge levels of bromide, bromine, and cyanide were compared from a detailed analysis of the published literature data. Comparing bromine vapor with hydrogen cyanide gas for a given length of exposure, the lethal concentration of bromine is about 3 times less than hydrogen cyanide. The toxicity of sodium bromide is similar to that of sodium chloride. Acute poisoning to bromides and chlorides is rare because of their low toxicities. The allowed discharge levels of Br-, Br2, and CN- in fresh water are 250, 0.1, and 0.005 mg dm-3, respectively.

The Bureau of Mines experimentally burned Pittsburgh Seam coal and other combustible materials found in mines in order to obtain a better knowledge of their emission products. These experiments were conducted in the Bureau's intermediate-scale fire tunnel, which simulates environ-mental conditions in underground mines. Smoke characteristics, gas concentrations, mass loss, and ventilation were measured. From these values, heat-release rates, particle sizes, obscuration rates, combustion yields, and production constants were calculated. This information was sought as part of a comprehensive study of combustible materials that will ultimately advance the design of more efficient fire detection and suppression systems. The coal combustion measurements presented in this report, together with previous analyses of wood and transformer fluid fires form a data base by which future studies of other mine combustibles can be compared.

1his paper presents a modified ordinary kriging technique referred to as the "Nearest Neighbor Kriging" (NNK). The method is a simple and practical tool to use when the ordinary kriging (OK) results are unreasonably smooth, especially when estimating recoverable ore reserves for deposits with skewed grade distributions. NNK is robust and globally unbiased like OK. However, it is more advantageous over OK because it can control some of the smoothing and conditional bias which have been the major pitfalls of OK in many grade estimation cases. The paper details the methodology of NNK and its application to a gold deposit.

The distribution of persistent organic pollutants in the environment is studied using the multimedia environmental fugacity model, and environmental health risk assessment of POPs nearby a copper smelt enterprise is carried out. The result indicates that all are in an agreeable risk level without exception. The annual individual chronic risk index of HCB is 7.50×10-11. The annual individual risk index of 3,3',4,4'-TCB is 1.57×10-9, and the annual individual risk index of 2,3,7,8-TCDD is 6.57×10-9.

This publication is intended to be of value to the mineral industry in establishing and maintaining effective programs for preventing noise-induced hearing loss. Factors involved in this loss and the need for and the requirements of an effective hearing conservation program are discussed. The legal and legislative history of compensation for hearing loss is briefly reviewed. A review of statutes is not attempted since several States have recently modified) or are in the process of modifying their laws regarding permissible noise exposures) required hearing protection) and/or compensation for hearing loss. A review of other aspects of the problem of industrial noise in terms of medical, physiological) and psychological frames of reference is included. A hearing conservation program is described in detail. Appendixes detailing the names and addresses of a few equipment suppliers are included. References are provided for those who may wish to delve more deeply into the medical, technical, and scientific considerations of noise and its effect on man.

In this two-year study, an evaluation of mining and reclamation practices at 159 randomly sampled surface coal mines in the United States was conducted. It is concluded that reclamation practices in most of the 22 coal-producing states were adequate during 1975, but that improvement in reclamation performance was desirable in the acid area of the central U. S. and in mountainous southwestern Virginia. Productivity improvements should result from research to determine efficient or optimal operating procedures for dragline stripping of single and multiple seams, surface mining of lignite, multicut and multiseam haulback mining on steep slopes, mountaintop removal, and surface mining in swampy or deeply glaciated areas. Specific candidate research projects are discussed in this report.

Driven by an increasing need for water conservation, coal mine operators in the upper Isaac River catchment have placed significant emphasis upon the reuse of water. This initiative led to an overall increase in the salinity of mine waters. The ionic composition of this water differs from local stream water in that concentrations of sulfate are higher than average stream concentrations by ten per cent, while concentrations of bicarbonate and calcium are lower. When this water is discharged into ephemeral streams in semi-arid environments there is potential for this increased salinity and altered ionic composition to impact upon the ecosystem processes mediated by micro-organisms in river sediments.We have measured nitrification, denitrification and methanogenesis rates in a series of lab experiments using sediments from Isaac River catchment streams and found that salinity affects these processes in different ways and to different degrees. Process rates were shown to differ seasonally between samples taken from the same location and habitat type and also between different habitat types at the same time and location. Both aerobic and anaerobic process rates were higher in surface sediments and it is likely that this activity is associated with surface biofilms. Furthermore, we have shown that the ecosystem processes we have measured are limited by the availability of carbon in the sediments.The management implications of these findings for mine releases into ephemeral streams will be discussed.CITATION:Kerr, J L, Vink, S and Beyer-Robson, J, 2013. The growth of computer and ground control technology in recent years, combined with an urgent demand for low-cost fossil fuels and mineral resources, has set the stage for full-scale utilization of computers in mine planning. Steeply rising production costs and the need to preserve the environment are placing great demands on engineers to improve their mining efficiencies, which can best be accomplished by applying the full capabilities of the computer. Pressure to develop and perfect programs with an immediate potential for improving mine de- sign, reducing mining costs and extending the viable coal reserves of the country has already come to bear in the form of exploding energy requirements, environ- mental considerations and the visible limitations of other energy sources. The computer program discussed in this paper, RAMPLAN (Rock Mechanics Applied to Nine Planning), was constructed as part of a continuing effort at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University under the sponsorship of the Office of Coal Research to develop a suite of programs to benefit the mining engineer in improving mine design and evaluation techniques. This program averages out structural data values obtained from randomly placed or gridded point sources across a mining property and uses these values in structural design equations. The basic purpose of the program is to provide accurate estimates of mineable tonnages, based on a realistic assessment of structural conditions existing in the deposit, for use in subsequent evaluation programs. Program output, however, also provides sound engineering data for the mine planner to use in planning and laying out new properties. Mining dimensions produced by the program provide a good starting point for initial layouts; and as more refined procedures are developed for increasing and improving the quality and quantity of information from boreholes, this information may be used with increasing confidence. The rock mechanics principles utilized in the program are generally well-established with full details provided to the user. To produce meaningful results extensive input data, obtained from exploration borehole core data, outcrop sampling points, or mine samples, are required. To assist the engineer, details of the types of tests that should be conducted have been listed. By including all of the ground control equations in the program the otherwise long and tedious calculations can be performed easily and quickly, and the work can provide the basis for a more detailed ground control study. The program is written in Fortran IV Level G to run on an IBM 3701155 ASP and requires 156K storage.

Coal-mine haulage ranks second as a cause of coal-mine fatalities, and the prevention of such accidents will materially improve progress in safety in the coal-mining industry. Beginning March 1950, Federal coal-mine inspectors were made responsible for completely investigating all fatal accidents in and around coal mines. During these 10 months, Federal coal-mine inspectors investigated 447 fatal accidents. This is a study of 121 of the fatal haulage accidents investigated, which constituted 27 percent of fatalities from all causes. Haulage employees represent only 12 to 15 percent of mine personnel, but, on the basis of accident frequency, their work is the most hazardous in coal mines. Fatal haulage accidents occurred in 53 bituminous coal-producing counties representing 14 States and Alaska. The physical conditions represent a cross section of' producing coal beds. Mining and transportation methods vary, from those of small hand-loading mines to those of modern mechanized mines.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents an overview of ground control considerations associated with floor heave. Factors affecting heave, such as in situ stress, floor characteristics, and mine geometry, are described. Floor-displacement monitoring and data analysis methods are outlined. Finally, floor heave remediation is discussed. The remedial techniques are divided into four categories: mine maintenance, supplemental support, mine structure, and techniques for multiple-seam operations. Other subjects covered in the report include laboratory and in-place testing of floor rocks, U.S. and international case studies, effects of mine layout, determination of excess horizontal pressure, and types of heave failure. The emphasis of this report is on practical considerations; theoretical discussions are kept to a minimum.

In this paper, we present design and implementation details of a fuzzy-behavior-based controller for an automated excavator. This robotic excavator must be equipped with sensors, actuators and an embedded control system. The excavator controller uses neural-networks to interpret forces and torques gathered from bucket mounted force sensors during the excavation process. Implementation details and experimental results using the fuzzy behavior based excavation controller are given for several excavation tasks. These excavation tasks demonstrate some of the complex skills that are essential for an autonomous mining excavator controller.

Lihir Gold Mine is situated in a dormant volcanic caldera on a small island off PNG. Not æextinctÆ but dormant. Current ground temperatures are up to 150 degrees Celsius with active geysers in the workings of the mine, pools of boiling ground water adjacent to low-grade dumps and hydrogen sulphide gas emissions. It is a unique mining environment by world standards. This paper will deal with the following issues encountered and managed by the operation:blasting in hot and reactive ground; management of sulphide gas emissions; disposal at sea of all mining waste rock; one dear to all Australian minerÆs hearts û dealing with landowner groups; and unusual human resource issues.

Some observations on 'ancient' mining at Phalaborwa C. E. MORE. B.A. (Pretoria) (Visitor) A brief account is given of historical references to the Phalaborwa area, the first being to the mountain of copper and iron sought by Francois de Cuiper in 1725. These are followed by a description of several finds in the area, which are related to finds described in the literature and to Bantu tradition on the subject. Phalaborwa is one of the earliest known mining sites in the Republic of South Africa, Loolekop having been a mining centre, as shown by carbon-14 dating, since 770 A.D.

A study was made of the physical and chemical nature of silica minerals found as natural impurities in bentonites and montmorillonitic Fuller&apos;s earth clay products as well as in <10 micron dust from eight processing plants. The results show that the silica minerals present in these clay materials are totally encapsulated or encased in clay. No "free" silica minerals could be observed in SEM images of either granular or powder products or in dust samples collected for MSHA crystalline silica analysis. Silica minerals, such as quartz, are identifiable by SEM and EDS analysis only after removing the clay coatings by vigorous washing. After washing it can be observed that all crystalline quartz grains also have diagenetic overgrowths of what is probably opaline silica. The clay and opaline silica encapsulation of quartz plus the strongly hydro scopic nature of montmorillonite are believed to be responsible for there not being a single confirmed case of silicosis among workers in the subject plants after more than 65 years of production.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines study comparing the construction costs, leakage measurements, and predicted performance of different types of large stoppings built and tested in a room-and-pillar oil-shale mine. The six full-sized structures (30 ft high by 55 ft wide) included both permanent and temporary stoppings and were fabricated using materials ranging from structural steel to coated brattice cloth. Leakage across each stopping was measured at differential pressures ranging up to 1.0 in w.g., using both the brattice window method and sulfur hexa-fluoride (SF6) tracer gas. Blast air pressures resulting from a full-scale face blast of approximately 1,800 lb of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosives were measured across two of the stoppings and the pre-and post-leakage rates were compared for all the stoppings. Overall performance of the stoppings for production applications was evaluated using an operational model of a two-panel oil-shale mine. Different combinations of temporary and permanent stoppings were evaluated based upon ventilation performance and construction and operating costs.

The performance of a novel prototype kerf-cutting impact mining machine was evaluated under a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and RAMEX Systems, Bellevue, WA, while operating under conditions typical of normal tunnel entry development. Selected operating parameters were monitored concurrently to determine baseline operating conditions and to study relationships between operating parameters. Using the data obtained, the specific energy requirements of the impact mining machine were calculated and compared to specific energy requirements of tunnel boring machines cutting in rock having similar hardness. Tests results indicate that the kerf-cutting impact mining machine can provide a mechanical means for mining very hard rock that cannot be effectively mined using commercially available mechanical excavators.

This report is the 21st in a series summarizing research and technologic work on coal and related investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines - the Chard of the series published on a calendar-year basis 2/ Subject publica¬tions of the Bureau during 1956 are cited, and pertinent Bureau work is described briefly. The most effective method of conserving our important coal reserves is through improved technology of production and utilization. Associated problems form the program of the Bureau.3 4 5 6/ Potential production is depend¬ent on a knowledge of the quantity and quality of the reserves, and the Bureau continues to contribute information on this subject. Many problems are being studied that relate to improvements in current production, including mining methods and health and safety measures. Preparation of mined coal is necessary for its most efficient utilization. Preparation by conventional methods is being studied, as well as the development or new methods. Fundamental studies on the structure and properties of coal are necessary to insure full advantage of the special qualities of different coals. Controlling factors in the efficient use of coal in combustion, carbonization, gasification, and direct and indirect hydrogenation of coal are being studied continuously, and new processes are being investigated. The many advances in all these fields are discussed.

"Abstract -The common style of gold mineralization in the Basal Reef and other auriferous conglomerates of the Witwatersrand Supergroup comprises clusters of gold grains occurring interstitially to quartz and pyrite pebbles as well as gold accumulations attached to the surface of and infilling hairline cracks and fractures in round, compact, detrital pyrite. The latter textural association is generally interpreted as a result of remobilization of originally detrital gold during regional metamorphism and related hydrothermal fluid circulation. There is general agreement that, although gold solubility was Iow, ore modification occurred during the metahydrothermal event, but uncertainty exists about the magnitude and scale of gold remobilization .Micro-textural and chemical investigation of compact round pyrite and associated gold accumulation has established that gold is preferentially deposited on chemically heterogeneous pyrite surfaces. Combinations of alternating high- and low-As zones in pyrite result in mixed np-type conductivity accompanied by electron exchange and the reduction-driven deposition of gold at the cathode. This mode] does not explain gold accumulations which are not immediately linked to chemical heterogeneities and it is inferred that an additional control on the deposition of gold was exerted by physical defects which lead to zones of increased charge density and/or areas of focussed conductivity. The inferred precipitation mechanisms suggest that submicrocopic physical and chemical controls are the important factors that determined the sites of gold nucleation and that precipitation mechanisms based on physicochemical changes of the hydrothermal system were not involved. The Basal Reef contains on average close to 5% of round, detrital, chemically zoned pyrite which provides a large number of electrochemically active pyrite surfaces. The extremely effective electrochemical precipitation mechanism together with the low solubility of gold in Witwatersrand fluids is the main reason for the spatially restricted remobilization of gold in the conglomerate reefs."
