The electrolytic reduction of uranium dioxide to molten uranium in fluoride baths at approximately 1,200° C was demonstrated. Electrolyte constituents were BaF2, UF4, and either MgF2 or LiF. Preliminary laboratory-scale experiments were made in which the uranium oxide was added continuously for 3 to 5 hours to the cell during electrolysis. Over 1,000 grams of metal of 99-8 percent purity was made in some tests, Major impurities were aluminum, barium, iron, silicon, carbon, and oxygen. The effects of cell design, geometry, and bath composition were investigated. Electrode arrangement was the most important factor in cell performance.

EGAT Mae Moh Lignite Mine in Thailand produces about 16 Mt of lignite annually from open-cut mining. The coal is used to generate 2400 MW of electricity. In the near future, however, the coal must be extracted from underground at 400 - 500 m deep from the surface. The problem is the thickness of the coal seams. There are two coal seams that are about 25 m thick with 20 - 25 m of interburden between them.In order to investigate thick seam mining systems and propose a new mining system in ultra-thick coal seams in Thailand, a joint research group was established by Japanese and Thai researchers and mining engineers in early 2009. This paper describes conventional underground mining systems and underground coal gasification for thick coal seams and discusses the applicable coal mining systems to this mine. Then, this paper proposes an innovative underground coal mining system for thick coal seam, ‘eco-friendly underground coal mining system which consists of the utilisation of flyash and CO2 storage’.

The definition of the working sections that will be used in a mine is usually initially made in the field by the geologist supervising the drilling program. These initial definitions are often made on the basis of rules of thumb such as æcoal less than 30 cm thick cannot be mined separatelyÆ; æpartings more than 30 cm thick will be mined separatelyÆ; and æif a coal seam is less than 50 cm thick and the parting above or below is thicker than the coal, the coal will be wastedÆ. These decisions are also often made based on the requirement for a minimum sample mass for analysis, and the desire to collect data at the minimum resolution to conserve the exploration budget.In many cases the geological models based on this data are produced at a resolution that is inadequate to allow the mining engineer to produce a mine plan that will maximise project value. This problem is generally unrecognised.Where data is collected to a higher level of resolution the subsequent processes employed in the production of geological models and mine plans often discards the inherent value that is hidden in this data. Again this problem is generally unrecognised.This paper highlights this problem and then presents a methodology that ensures that the optimal working section is selected and compares the outcomes of applying this methodology versus adherence to the usual rules of thumb.

IT is very difficult to arrive at exact figures for the cost of maintaining excess capacity of coal mines, but we can approximate the various items. To do this, I will take the Pittsburgh district of Pennsylvania and the other districts can be compared to this one. I believe we can take the depreciation item of plant ac- count as a whole and discount it over a period of 20 years; while this is high for some items it is low for others and I believe it is not far from a safe basis. This equals 5 per cent per year, and this depreciation will take place about as rapidly when not in use as when in operation. A fair value in the Pittsburgh district to- day for plant and houses is close to $4 per ton per annum. At 5 per cent this will equal 20 cents per ton per year. The item of keeping the mine in condition, free from water, etc., will be close to an average of 2y2 cents per ton per annum.

The rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of 17 chemical (metallic) elements which appear in the periodic table. The group consists of 15 lanthanide elements along with yttrium and scandium (Table 1). They share many similar properties, which is why they occur together in geological deposits. Although commonly referred to as rare, they are really quite common; the reason they are perceived as rare is because it is not common to find them in commercially viable concentrations. These metals are critical to advanced technology, ranging from smart phones to global positions system (GPS) receivers, medical devices and jet engines. They are critical in green, high-tech and defense industries (Fig.1 and 2). Although there have been increasing efforts to find alternative supplies, these efforts have been complicated by the pollution that rare earth mining and processing creates. To extract rare earths minerals from mined ore is a complicated and costly process. The ore is first mined through normal mining process, the bastnaesite, which generally contains a number of minerals of little value, is first removed through a floatation process. The bastnaesite containing the REEs is further separated into their respective pure forms in a separation plant using acid and various solvent extraction separation steps. Each element has its own unique extraction steps and chemical processes. At times, these elements, in the form of oxides, will require reprocessing to achieve ideal purity. The last steps would be to further process into metals first, then alloys for various applications. The entire process takes approximately 10 days. The mining and processing of REEs, if not carefully controlled, can create environmental hazards. This is one of the reasons the Mountain Pass Mine in California was closed down in the 1980s.

At high formation pressures the distillate produced from a gas-condensate reservoir may be black in color. In this event the dense gas phase existing above the dew point is correspondingly dark. Volumetric phase data and an analysis of a reservoir fluid exhibiting these characteristics, together with a description of the visual equilibrium cell in which these observations were made, are presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION Previously the author, like many others in the oil and gas industry perhaps, tacitly assumed that the expressions black or dark oil system, crude oil system and bubble-point system were synonymous. Crude oil reservoir fluids are bubble-point systems and yield a black or dark stock-tank oil of relatively low API gravity. Conversely, a clear or amber colored trap distillate of high API gravity is assumed indicative of a dew point system or a gas-condensate reservoir fluid. This broad classification appears satisfactory for shallow reservoirs, but as the following study demonstrates, may be misleading when applied to deep reservoirs. Theoretically, there is no reason to exclude the possibility of producing a dark, low-gravity distillate from a gas-condensate reservoir. At sufficiently high values of pressure and temperature, heavy, dark-colored hydrocarbons may exist in the vapor state of a multi-component system. If enough dark-colored components are present in the reservoir vapor phase, the resulting condensate will be dark. The reservoir fluid investigated in the present study supports this contention. Stock-tank production was black in color and measured 29" APT gravity. From outward appearances, the liquid closely resembled a medium gravity crude oil. Experimental measurements proved the reservoir fluid was in reality a gas-condensate system. Volumetric phase data for this high-pressure system and a description of the visual cell in which the study was conducted successfully are presented in this paper. THEORY Phase behavior of a reservoir fluid can be predicted accurately with reference to a pressure-temperature phase diagram. If the reservoir temperature is lower than the critical temperature of the hydrocarbon fluid in place, bubble-point behavior will be observed. If the reservoir temperature lies between the critical and cricondentherm temperature, dew point behavior and retrograde condensation will occur. For reservoir temperatures above the cri- condentherm, only a single gas phase can exist in the reservoir regardless of pressure. Providing the composition of the reservoir fluid were known, it would be possible to predict the critical temperature and estimate the phase behavior from equilibrium relationships. However, the usual practice is to obtain a sample of reservoir fluid, subject it to varying pressures at the reservoir temperature and observe the phase behavior experimentally. The latter method was used to obtain the data reported here. WELL AND TRAPPING INFORMATION A summary of pertinent data for the well from which the reservoir fluid was sampled is presented in Table 1. This well is located offshore Louisiana. Except for the pressure which substantially exceeds hydrostatic pressure, the information does not appear unusual. Prior to the sampling program, the well was produced for 22 hours at a stock tank oil rate of 139 B/D. Average trapping conditions and gauging data for the six-hour test period that followed are summarized in Table 2. Samples of the first-stage trap gas and liquid were obtained during the latter portion of the test period. Ambient temperature remained 5 to 10F below trap temperature and presented no problem for sampling. Surface wind and moderate foaming of stock-tank oil presented some difficulty in obtaining accurate stock-tank gauges. SAMPLE ANALYSIS Compositions of the gas and liquid samples are shown in Table 3. The trap gas was analyzed by isothermal chromatography which revealed only a trace of heptane in the stream. The trap liquid was initially analyzed by low-temperature fractional distillation, yielding a bottom product of heptane and heavier components. "Uranium occurrences are widely distributed in tuffaceous-argillaceous beds and abundant rhyolitic volcanic rocks of the upper Aillik group, which is more than 3 km thick and over 125 km by 40 km in areal extent. They include partially developed Kitts and Michelin deposits, containing 1560 and 7366 t U respectively.Uranium occurs mainly as disseminated fine pitchblende grains in beds and lenticular stratabound zones, and rarely as coarse pitchblende aggregates and thin veinlets. The Kitts deposit and ten other occurrences are in the argillaceous-tuffaceous beds within a steeply dipping stratigraphic zone, less than 50 m thick and over 20 km long, at the base of the upper Aillik group. The occurrences hosted by the rhyolitic rocks, numbering over fifty and including the Michelin deposit, are in elongate structural-stratigraphic belts or zones, and are characterized by a pronounced enrichment of soda and depletion of potash associated with mineralization. The mineralized zones are affected to a varying degree by Hudsonian deformation, metamorphism and granitic intrusions.The uranium mineralization is interpreted as genetically related to the felsic volcanism, involving syngenetic deposition in argillaceous-tuffaceous beds and epigenetic emplacement in rhyolites. The volcanic activity occurred 1855 ± 5 Ma ago according to a preliminary U-Pb zircon date on porphyritic rhyolite. Pitchblendesfrom the Kitts and Michelin deposits and a few other occurrences in rhyolites have yielded nearly concordant dates in 1810 to 1730 Ma range. They reflect resetting of isotopic equilibrium at the time of Hudsonian deformation. Other isotopic data on pitchblendes and galena from veins and aggregates .in the south near the 'Grenville Front' indicate local redistribution of uranium and radiogenic lead at the time of Grenville Orogeny approximately 1100 Ma ago."

"Economic Mn-oxide ore deposits of commercial grade occur in the Rhodope massif near Kato Nevrokopi in the Drama region, Northern Greece. The Mn-oxide mineralization has developed by weathering of continental hypogene rhodochrosite-sulphide veins. The vein mineralization is con-?ned by tectonic shear zones between marble and metapelites, extending laterally into the marble astabular, pod or lenticular oreshoots (up to 50 m x 20 m x 5-10 m). Supergene oxidation of the hypogene mineralization led to the formation of in-situ residual Mn-oxide ore deposits, and secondary infills of Mn-oxide ore in embryonic and well developed karst cavities.Whole rock geochemical pro?les across mineralized zones con?rm the role of thrusts and faults as solution passageways and stress the importance of these structures in the development of hydrothermal and supergene mineralization at Kato Nevrokopi. Three zones are recognized in the in-situ supergene veins: (A) a stable zone of oxidation, where immobile elements form (or substitute in) stable oxide mineral phases, and mobile elements are leached; (B) a transitional (active) zone in which element behavior is strongly in?uenced by seasonal ?uctuations of the groundwater table and variations in pH-Eh conditions; and (C) a zone of permanent ?ooding, where variations in pH-Eh conditions are minimal. Zone (B) is considered as the source zone for the karst cavity mineralization. During weathering, meteoric waters, which were CO2-rich (PCO2~10-3.8 to 10-1.4) and oxygenated (fO2~10-17 for malachite), percolated downward within the veins, causing breakdown and dissolution of sul?des and marble, and oxidation of rhodochrosite to Mn-oxides. Karst cavity formation was favored by the high permeability along thrust zones. Dissolved Mn2+was transportedinto karst cavities in reduced meteoric waters at the beginning of weathering (pH~4-5), and as Mn(HCO3)2in slightly alkaline groundwaters during advanced weathering (pH~6-8). Mn4+-oxide precipitation took place by fO2increase in ground waters, or pH increase by continuous hydrolysis and carbonate dissolution. In the well developed karst setting, some mobility of elements occurred during and after karst ore formation in the order Na>K>Mg>Sr>Mn>As>Zn>Ba>Al>Fe>Cu>Cd>Pb."

"During recovery operations following a recent coal-mine explosion, 12 small fires were encountered near the break line of pillar extraction in a large panel. All of the fires except one were quickly extinguished by the rescue and recovery parties. This fire had found its way into a large quantity of loose material at a corner of the cut-through between two rooms, about 100 to 150 feet from the break line of an extensive goaf; had it been necessary to seal the fire, the inclusion of this break line not only would have made the work difficult but would have made the section hazardous as it probably would have given off gas. The fire covered a floor space of about 100 square feet and when discovered was burning briskly, with the flame extending to the roof at a height of 3 or 4 feet; it was the cause of much apprehension on the part of those in charge of the recovery operations and resulted in delaying the work considerablyThe object of this article is to describe in detail the method by which the fire was brought under control and finally extinguished, so that other persons encountering similar conditions may have the benefit of the experience.When the fire was discovered a request for rock-dust, fire extinguishers, and other fire fighting equipment was telephoned to headquarters on the surface. The promptness with which fire fighting equipment and material was provided was a big factor in finally extinguishing the fire and illustrates one of the many advantages of a good organization for fire-fighting. Material was transported in mine cars to a point on the main hauling road about 1,200 feet from the fire. It was then carried to the scene of activity by workmen. The first material to be delivered at the fire was a number of fire extinguishers of various types. The contents of 30 to 35 of these were discharged on the fire and with the aid of a small quantity of rock-dust were sufficient to smother the flame temporarily. It was the opinion of several persons who were present when the fire extinguishers were used that the acid-soda type of extinguisher gave more effective results than the two or three other types used.When the contents of all of the fire extinguishers had been exhausted the fire was temporarily smothered, but as there appeared to be danger that the flame would burst forth again, means for completely extinguishing the fire were"

Rock-breaker automation and remote operation improves the safety and efficiency of mining operations. This article presents an overview of the Rocklogic rock-breaker automation system architecture that provides collision avoidance, automated parking, and remote operation functionality. The system consists of a distributed computer control system that interfaces with sensors attached to the rock-breaker, the rock-breaker hydraulics, and the site infrastructure. We present results of an automated Transmin rockbreaker installed in a production environment at an underground Australian mine site. The system has been in production use for over 900 days during which there have been no reported collisions, and 100% adoption of the remote operation technology. As a result, Rocklogic has significantly improved the safety of rock-breaking operations and reduced the rock-breaking cycle time, thereby improving the sites overall throughput.

The competitive market potential for solvent refined coal is estimated. Market advantages of solvent refined coal are enumerated. Markets are possible in combustion, railroad locomotion, and carbon electrodes. The combustion characteristics are consistent with expected air pollution restrictions on the emission of sulfur and particulate matter. A market potential of sufficient size exists to support the initiation of solvent refining in the United States. The market analysis should help fuel producers determine the advisability of their undertaking the solvent refining of coal.

Placer Dome is learning from experience in Latin America, Asia and Africa, as well as in North America, that contributing effectively to sustainable human progress in the areas of its operations presents unending challenges to think creatively, communicate effectively and remain culturally sensitive. People must be better off in terms of their economic circumstances, their social conditions and the quality of their natural environment not only during the life of the mines, but after mines close. Stakeholders, all those who are directly or indirectly affected by a mining project, should be able to participate in decisions which affect them. The development of sustainability strategies, the monitoring of sustainability performance and the implementation of sustainability programs are best done in partnerships with governments, communities, nongovernmental organizations and multilateral development institutions. Ultimately, the success, if not the survival of mining, will depend on our ability to get the sustainability equation correct.

This paper presents the unique design and construction challenges for the Technoparc Station, located in downtown Montreal as a part of Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM), a light rail rapid transit system. The station is located 15 m below the street with rock-bearing secant pile wall as the primary structural system working as both the retaining and gravity structure. The paper highlights the challenges related to the support of excavation structure, invert slab resisting high hydrostatic forces, waterproofing tightness etc. It also focuses on the importance of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in underground tunneling projects for effective coordination, clash-free, optimized design and costs.

"Stoppings in coal mines serve, important and. vital functions, such as coursing the ventilating current, sealing off abandoned or dangerous workings, sealing fire areas, and separating mines at boundaries. Stoppings may hold back water, but normally that is not their function; their design is, or should be very different from that of a hydraulic dap which is designed to a definite load, often a very heavy one, from one direction over an indefinitely long period. Hence, a dam usually requires an arched structure to resist hydraulic pressure, and it must be massive to meet vertical stresses due to heavy ground pressure.Stoppings are designed primarily to resist a pressure applied laterally through air or gases. Their strength cannot be stated without specifying the direction of applied load. A stopping may be placed in stress by proof pressure subsequent to erection, through extraction of pillars in the vicinity which may act direct, or by squeezing the ribs or heaving the floor. These forces act more or less parallel to the faces of the stopping and may be very great but measures must be taken suitable to each case, and it is impossible to allow for these in general specifications other than to call for normally good construction. A stopping is principally designed to resist the action of forces at right angles to its face, such as the shocks of blasting, the pressure of gas from instantaneous violent out bursts such as have occurred in certain British Columbia coal mines, sudden compression of the air by great falls of roof in closed spaces, and at time pressures that accompany an explosion of either fire damp or coal dust or both. The “BIOMOre” project aims to prove the technical feasibility of indirect in situ bioleaching of sulfide minerals contained in a deep underground deposit, by bringing together the disciplines required to make a success. The underground location in Poland was provided by project partner KGHM inside an operating copper mine. Key components of this project were the design and construction of a pilot plant, and its operation in an underground environment. This project also included a ∼250 t (100 m3) fragmented rock reactor hydraulically connected to the pilot plant. The pilot plant consisted of several tanks and pumps, a fluidised bed ferric iron generating bioreactor containing immobilised acidophilic iron oxidation biomass, and all the required instrumentation and utilities. Before the bioleaching phase could start, the rock reactor had to be flushed continuously firstly with water to remove chloride salts that are corrosive and also harmful for the bacteria used in the bioreactor, and secondly, with sulfuric acid solution to react with the carbonates present in the ore matrix. This paper summarizes the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of the pilot plant.

The purpose of this paper is to present the key elements in a system; study of the electrical system for a timing and/or tilling operation. The ability of an electrical system to function in a reliable fashion at its proper levels is essential for an operation to be successful. A system study consists of a load study for determining the capability of the electrical network to provide power to the various loads and a short circuit study for determining the capability of the electrical protective equipment to properly protect against fault conditions. The sequence of events in a system study is data acquisition, determining the electrical parameters and analyzing the ability of the system to meet these requirements. If the system is small, herd calculations will be the manner in which the study will be conducted; if it is large then commuters will be used. A load study has as its objectives the determination of the capability and reliability of the source of power, transformers and conductors to satisfactorily deliver power to the loads at an acceptable voltage level. The Information required is a single line diagram showing the source, transformers, conductors and loads.

Novel rare earth boron icosahedral compounds are investigated as potential high temperature thermoelectric materials. REB50-type compounds and REB22C2N compounds were synthesized and the thermoelectric properties measured. Seebeck coefficients in excess of 200 V/K are observed at temperatures above 1000 K for the REB50-type compounds. Strikingly, n-type behavior was observed for REB22C2N. Up to now, non-doped B12 icosahedral compounds have all been p-type. The discovery of an n-type compound is extremely important in terms of the potential development of this class of compounds as viable thermoelectric materials. Low thermal conductivities of < 0.03 W/cm/K at room temperature was observed for these rare earth boron cluster compounds.

Pneumatic stowing is commonly employed in European coal mines, but is not used in the United States. This paper reports a study conducted to analyze the conditions under which pneumatic stowing might be advantageously used and the techniques and costs involved in order to effect this. Although stowing may reduce the subsidence in a mining area, this does not entirely eliminate the surface damage. Besides, the cost of stowing will run about $1.50 to $3 per ton of coal mined not including the cost of fill material, if it has to be bought and transported to the mine. Stowing my, however, be economically viable under special circumstances such as in thick, steep, or contiguous seams.

"The redevelopment of the World Trade Center (WTC) provided an opportunity for the Port Authority of NY and NJ to complete a long sought underground connection between all of Lower Manhattan’s transit lines, the World Trade Center and the World Financial Center (WFC) (Figure 1). Creating this connection was a challenge because the WFC lies west of the heavily trafficked Route 9A, also known as West Street. The previous connection was a bridge that required pedestrians to make significant level and directional changes to navigate the crossing. The positioning and elevation of the Route 9A pedestrian tunnel was established to provide pedestrians with a clear, single level, climate controlled corridor from the new WTC Transit HUB to escalators leading into the WFC Winter Garden.As the most direct link to the WFC, tens of thousands of people a day will use the pedestrian corridor. To accommodate this large number of pedestrians and provide an obstruction free passage, the tunnel has a clear width of 50 ft (15.2 m). Although only 250 ft (76.2 m) long, that short length presented many technical challenges.Here I describe how the challenges were overcome during the construction. However, some of the truly problematic issues arose from coordinating the phasing of this project with adjacent construction activities at the WTC, the reconstruction of Route 9A, and the WFC’s redevelopment program. The limited access to the excavation areas and confined site logistics were further complicated by having to maintain six lanes of traffic on Route 9A at all times. The efforts were so intertwined that, well into the underpass construction, the Port Authority Construction Department decided to merge a portion of that work into the WFC redevelopment."
