"The selection, evaluation, and modification of contractor mix designs for self-hardening seepage barriers, completed by the slurry trench excavation method, can be one of the most critical and challenging tasks to ensure the cutoff wall meets the design performance criteria. Contractor mix designs should incorporate all available geotechnical data, including subsurface soil characteristics, groundwater information, and potential site contaminates. However, the pre-construction mix design can have limitations if subsurface data is limited or shows variability from initial investigations. Placement of the seepage barrier material needs to be evaluated during construction to identify in-situ performance. In one particular case study, the self-hardening cutoff wall mix design was evaluated over a one year period followed by a year and a half installation period, in which, a number of adjustments were made to the laboratory mix design during construction due to performance in the field. Installation for the selected mix was monitored on a real-time basis, using quality control data, as well as early strength and permeability results to determine if adjustments to the self-hardening mix were necessary. Evaluation of early results and relationships between strength and permeability were used to make adjustments prior to achieving the final test results for 28-day strength and permeability. Test results of the installed mix illustrated a direct correlation between strength and permeability. Achieving a minimum unconfined compressive strength was necessary to meet the minimum permeability of the seepage barrier. Other determinations conclude that the thorough development of a pre-construction mix design can have limitations even when all geotechnical data and site conditions are taken into account. Understanding early indicators and key strength and permeability relationships are necessary to determine seepage barrier performance and limitations.IntroductionThe evaluation of contractor mix designs for self-hardening seepage barriers was reviewed for one particular case study where a mix was developed using available geotechnical background information, including considerations for impacted groundwater. Following development of the laboratory mix design, the seepage barrier wall was installed over a one and a half year period, where the contractor mix design was evaluated and modified to accommodate field conditions affecting performance. The objective of the project was to cutoff and collect impacted groundwater and prevent the migration of contaminants to the creek running adjacent to the project. The self-hardening seepage barrier wall was installed using the slurry trench excavation method along 4700 ft of alignment and extended to depths ranging from 20 to 85 ft below ground surface, where it tied in with a low permeability stratum or competent bedrock."

This Bureau of Mines report describes an automatic and continuous transducer-drift compensator. The compensator formed a part of the instrumentation used to indicate the saturation by hydrogen of a cryogenic, adsorption column. It has a variable delayed-response characteristic and will respond only to signals having rise times faster than component drift times. Zero drift due to varying ambient conditions and component aging is nullified. Equations relating the output as a function of the input signal are given.

During harsh weather conditions, the presence of fog, dust in the environment degrades the image’s quality, which affects the visibility of drivers of heavy earth-moving machinery in opencast mines. Due to low visibility, mining operations cannot be carried out as drivers are easily prone to accidents. This paper proposes a technique that includes developing a vision enhancement system called perceptive driving assistant system for increasing visibility of real-time video of the road in front of the vehicle for operators of heavy earth-moving machinery at opencast mines during harsh weather conditions to overcome the problem. The system consists of high-quality Internet Protocol cameras and thermal cameras for real-time image processing and other well-defined devices, which is quite capable of enhancing the visibility of the image, outlining edges of the road, and detecting obstacles present on the path of operators for smooth driving and reducing threat of accidents. A high-speed graphical processing unit has been used for quality-performance parallel computing, which is well suited for real-time operations to empower fast real-time operations. The calculated frame per second (fps) of image enhancement, object detection, and edge detection is 17.91, 15.91, and 25.09 fps, respectively. The actual frame rate is 26.07 fps, and after applying the algorithm, the final frame rate is 19.65 fps. The calculated accuracy of the object detection model is 81.23%. Field trials indicate that the developed system has performed adequately during foggy weather.

Durhm has a well earned reputation for supplying some of the finest coking caals in the world. The caals, in general, vary in rank from 301 to 501/2. Durham has traditionally produced foundry coke for the major proportion of the foundries in Great Britah. Durham coals can be described as clean, soft coals, which yielded, with the old hand methods of coal getting, low ash small coal because the extraneous shale was normally harder than the coal and occurred in larger pieces. Under these conditions, with a plentiful supply of cheap labor, it used to be sufficient, at most collieries, to hand clean the large sizes of coal which could then be remixed with the untreated small coal to produce carbonization coals, ready for the coke ovens, at under 5 pct ash. With the introduction of mechanical methods of coal mining, the coal gradually required more cleaning. The first method adopted to resolve this problem was the introduction of pneumatic dry cleaners for the small coal. Although such machines had little effect on the fine coal (say below 1/8 in.), they could clean the intermediate sizes of coal. This, coupled with hand cleaning the larger sizes above 1-1/2or 2 in., resulted in a combined run-of-mine mixture below 6 pct ash, capable of maintaining the quality and reputation of the cokes produced. In more recent years, the intensification of mechanization and power loading, coupled with gradual exhaustion of the cleaner seams, has created the need for a more complete method of coal cleaning. This particularly applies in the fine sizes (say below 1/50 in.) which normally vary, under present day conditions, between 15 and 35 pct ash and are much too dirty to be included in the raw state in a carbonization mixture. This pronounced change has been accelerated because legislation controlling the dust conditions of mine airs for the prevention of pneumoconiosis has resulted in tk~e extensive use of water underground and a consequent increase in moisture content of the run-of-milie output. The presence of damp fine coal decreast the efficiency of prescreening and dry cleaners, so that this type of preparation for low ash coking coals is decreasing, although it is still used satisfactorily for industrial coals in the medium ash range. Table I shows the gradual increase in mechanization, the reduction in manpower, the increased use of explosives per ton of coal extraction, and the increase in the proportion of coal cleaned by mechanical means in Great Britain. Although similar figures are not available for Durham Div. until after the date of nationalization of the coal industry, it is probable that the increase in mechanical cleaning, particularly by dry cleaners, was more marked in the Durham collieries than elsewhere in the country. As dry clealiers were replaced by coal washeries in the Gritish ccal industry, no special attempts were made to recover the slurry, with the result that large outflows of dirty water were allowed, deposits of slurry came in to lagoons and neighboring streams, and a proportion of fine material was lost from the coking coal. This position, coupled with the higher moisture of the washed coking coal, resulted in adverse effects on coke oven throughputs and coke quality. It is now realized that the natural coal fines are an essential ingredient of coking coals in obtaining the correct coke structure in metallurgical cokes. This, together with economic pressure, led to the introduction of flocculation and filtration plants for the recovery of slurries, and later, when the ash contelits of the filter cakes were too high, to the introduction of froth flotation equipment. After this position had been reached, the tailings from the froth flotation pIants were, in many cases, still allowed to constitute an undesirable effluent. Recent legislation on river pollution has changed this picture; it is now necessary to provide a circuit which is completely closed so far as solids are concerned. The gradual increase in the coal cleaned by wet methods and froth flotation in Durham Div, is shown in Table 11. It is now an accepted feature of new Washeries that. froth flotation should be an integral part of the washing process from the initial installation of the plant.

Project approvals are the key mechanism to balance the environmental, social and economic aspects of a project. The assessment approaches vary significantly between states, with some having a strong emphasis on social, economic and environment, while others focus primarily on the environmental issues. There are a number of approaches which proponents and governments should consider which not only deliver better project outcomes, but can save proponents time and resources in delivering the project.   These approaches are not new but are often poorly implemented. This paper considers a number of these approaches and outlines the benefits they bring.

The Bureau of Mines electrowon hafnium metal with an average oxygen content of' 150 ppm at 700°C from an electrolyte containing 27 wt pct LiCl, 62 wt pct RbCl, and 11 wt pct HfC14. The average anode and cathode current efficiencies were 90 pct at anode and initial cathode current densities of 86 amp per sq ft. Haf-nium metal with an average oxygen content of 440 ppm was electrowon at 800oC from an electrolyte containing 90 wt pct KC1 and 10 wt pct HfCl4. The average anode and cathode current efficiencies were similar to those obtained in the LiCL-RbCl-HfCl, electrolyte. The chlorine gas given off at the graphite anode was vented through either a silica or a graphite tube to prevent cell corrosion. THE current method for the commercial production of high-purity hafnium is the thermal decomposition of Hfl4.1 The iodide method is not adaptable to continuous process techniques. Nettle, Hiegel, and Baker2 studied the electrorefining of hafnium from hafnium sponge containing 800 ppm oxygen. They failed to obtain hafnium with 600 ppm oxygen in their initial deposits and obtained AEC specification for oxygen only after 75 pct of the soluble hafnium had been removed from the electrolyte. Calculations using their data indicated this was approximately 4 lb of hafnium. The electrolyte was then used to produce approximately 3 lb of hafnium with a low oxygen content. However, no data are shown concerning the amount of anode material initially used or what percent of it was dissolved, therefore, results are not suitable for evaluation of a continuous operation. In general, it was not possible to consistently obtain low oxygen content metal with the electrolytes described by Nettle, Hiegel, and Baker. Wong, Hiegel, and Martinez3 investigated the electrorefining process for hafnium and showed that even by strict control of electrolyte composition only relatively low oxygen reduction could be obtained. The oxygen contained in the hafnium anode material tended to transfer to the cathode deposit and only a limited purification was possible. Both the "iodide" and the "electrorefining" processes depend upon hafnium sponge as a starting material. The sponge is normally produced by magnesium reduction of HfC14 ' and does not meet AEC specifications for hafnium metal. Since only 30 pct of the anode feed could be utilized3 in the electrorefining cells, the Bureau of Mines developed an electrowinning process. HfC14 was used as the feed material for the electro-winning process described in this report. Many of the electrolytes used in the electrorefining studies3 ap- peared to be suitable carrier-electrolytes for HfC14. However, in the initial studies on electrowinning, it was desirable to use electrolytes that had low solidus temperatures and could be operated over a wide temperature range to investigate parameters of the process. Therefore, electrolytes containing LiC1, NaC1, KC1, RbC1, CsC1, and HfC14, in various combinations were explored. EQUIPMENT Chlorinator. Hafnium carbide was chlorinated to produce HfC14 in the batch-type chlorination shown in Fig. 1. Chlorination temperatures were measured with a thermocouple placed in the center of the HfC charge. A flow meter was used to monitor the helium and chlorine. The exhaust side of the silica chlorina-tor tube was equipped with a flask for collecting organic material released during the initial heating of the HfC. The temperature of an internal heater, which extended from the HfC14 condensing flask to the hot end of the chlorinator, was adjusted to prevent the HfC14 from condensing before entering the collection flask. Helium and excess chlorine were exhausted through the lid of the collection flask to an aqueous NaOH solution. Sublimer. Initial studies were conducted using a sublimer, Fig. 2, made by placing a 13/8-in. OD nickel thimble 11 in. long, inside a 11/2-in. ID nickel bell 12 in. long, and locking it in place. This unit was loaded with HfC14 and partially immersed in the molten electrolyte for sublimation directly into the electrolyte. In another sublimer shown in Fig. 3, the HfC14 was contained in a "resin reaction flask". Quartz wool, previously heated to 600aC, secured between two nickel wire screens, was placed just above the HfC14 powder. The lid contained a vacuum outlet, a gage, an argon inlet, and an air-cooled pipe for condensing the HfC14. This sublimer was evacuated and heated. The sublimation temperature was not critical and the sublimer operated satisfactorily at all temperatures between 250" and 350°C. Electrolytic Cell. The electrolyte chamber, Fig. 4, was made of mild steel 8-in. schedule 20 pipe, 30 in. long. The exterior was metallized with a Ni-Cr alloy. The electrolytes were contained in a 16 gage nickel or iron liner with a nickel heat shield on top. The cell was heated by a resistance furnace. A 21/2-in. ID by 25 in. long air lock was connected to one port of a two-port cell cover assembly through a slide valve. The cover assembly of the air lock was electrically insulated from the cell and was equipped with a rubber sleeve that provided for the passage of the cathode lead. This allowed the cathode deposits to be removed and a new nickel cathode to be introduced without allowing air to enter the cell. Abstract - The Horne mine was truly a world class Cu and Au deposit. Between 1927 and 1989, it produced some 260 t of Au and 1.13 Mt of Cu from 53.7 Mt of ore that averaged 2.22% Cu, 6.1 g/t Au and 13 g/t Ag. The total value of Au and Cu production from the Horne deposit at metal prices of US$300/oz Au and US$1.00/lb Cu is an outstanding US$5.2 billion. The Horne mine was also a company builder. After optioning the property from Ed Horne (Tremoy Syndicate) in 1922, the Thomson-Chadbourne Syndicate discovered the deposit in 1923 and quickly grew to become Noranda, one of the world’s premier mining companies. This discovery fuelled exploration and, along with subsequent discoveries in the Val d’Or-Cadillac camps, led to the "economic development" of northwestern Quebec. The Horne deposit influenced and continues to influence genetic models for volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits. Early observations at Horne contributed to an epigenetic replacement theory for VMS deposits. The most recent genetic model for the Horne, invoking sub-seafloor sulfide replacement of silicified and sericitized volcaniclastic host rocks within a graben, has subsequently been proposed for another giant VMS deposit, the Kidd Creek mine. The Horne and Kidd Creek deposits show many similarities, such as localization within synvolcanic grabens, long-lived hydrothermal activity uninterrupted by volcanism, sub-seafloor replacement sulfides, stacked sulfide lenses, zone refining, silicified footwall rocks characterized by high positive ?18O values, and association with FIII rhyolites. Notable differences between the two deposits include the lack of andesitic, basaltic or komatiitic flows at Horne, different inferred water depths, high Au content at Horne versus negligible Au, but sub-economic to economic concentrations of Sn, In and Cd at Kidd Creek.

In an increasingly environmentally conscious world, mining's importance to society has often been misunderstood and even maligned by the public. Extreme and impractical ideas have often been presented to children because of the lack of accurate, timely resource materials available to educators. In the late 1960s. two mining engineers, S.P. "Pi" Warren and C.L. "Lindy" Barker, became aware of this situation. They proposed to develop a summer field course to provide a factual overview of the minerals industry for teachers. The pair believed that teachers could become better informed to educate students, and future generations, about mining. These two Colorado Mining Association (CMA) members felt that such a course could reduce much of the misunderstanding about this vital industry. This could be done by providing a balanced perspective of mining, not only for kindergarten-through-grade-12 teachers, but also for the students they would be teaching during their careers. Students who better understood the minerals industry could better formulate an unbiased view of it. The course would seek recognized authorities from industry, academia and government who would lecture in their respective fields of expertise. The course would provide a total concept of the coal, aggregate, metals and industrial minerals industries. It would include geology, geophysics, exploration, mining, processing, marketing, product applications, economic, mining history, careers, and environmental responsiblity. When possible, site visits would permit educators to view operations and to meet the men and women who are industry leaders. Teachers would pay a small tuition fee. The balance of the program expenses for each teacher would be paid through scholarships provided by industry and individuals. The "total concept" idea obtained the support of the minerals industry. The support of CMA's Education Committee and the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) was obtained in 1968. Colorado's Commission on Higher Education approved teacher recertification credits through CSM's Office of Special Progams and Continuing Education for those successfully completing the program. The first six-week series of classes presenting the total concept of the indus¬try was held at CSM in 1969. In 1977, the CMA Education Foundation Inc. (CMAEF) was established as a Colorado nonprofit corporation. The "Total Concept of the Mining Industry" (Total Concept) course was placed under its sponsorship. CMAEF is dedicated toward this continuing education program (Table 1). In 1994, the course was streamlined to four-weeks for six hours recertification credit.

This paper will explore the technology behind and applications of smart motor control centers (MCCs) being used today in mineral processing facilities. The two technologies to be discussed are solid-state motor controllers that can be installed in MCCs and the complementary digital communication networks that can transmit operational parameters of the solid-state devices to the supervisory system. The toughness and reliability of solid-state technologies have led to a dramatic increase in their usage throughout the mining industry. Products such as solid-state motor protectors, controllers, and variable frequency drives have demonstrated greater flexibility and performance in a variety of applications than their electromechanical and mechanical counterparts. The three key trends apparent in the solid-state devices are: 1. A shift to smaller, smarter, more integrated devices, which allows a single solid-state device to serve the purpose of multiple electromechanical devices but in a much smaller form factor. 2. Distribution of control logic in motor control devices rather than conveyed through a hard wired connection to a central automation system. 3. Embedded network communication that allows supervisory systems to have an expanded view into critical loads and sensors. In applications, the use of smart actuators and sensors with integral local intelligence and communication allow a supervisory controller to send high level commands and let the smart device coordinate its own work The ability of smart field devices to return noncontrolled, nonpoled information opens a whole array of new capabilities for preventive maintenance and diagnostics and forms the basis for an effective motor management program. The smart motor control devices this paper will explore are the smart motor protectors (SMP), smart motor controllers (SMC), and variable frequency drives (VFD).

"During construction of a 9.5-ft. diameter sanitary sewer tunnel, the City of Edmonton encountered a large pocket of flowing sand that flooded their TBM and caused significant surface subsidence, stopping further tunneling by the TBM through this zone. A unique collaborative effort ensued between the authors representing the city, consulting engineers and academic researchers to develop the optimal strategy for grouting the problematic soils. The site has a layer of very find sand between 20 and 30 ft. in depth with fines contents ranging from 5% to more than 40%. The collaboration extended from requesting additional site investigation efforts to shipping samples to the UT-Austin laboratories for grout testing plus ground and grouting characterization tests resulting in field recommendations for a full scale ground improvement program. New research information on the grouting of fine sands along with a collaborative framework for the design of in-situ grouting projects are the key topics presented. INTRODUCTION Encountering a large unexpected pocket of flowing sand with an open-faced TBM while excavating a tunnel below the groundwater table is never a good thing. This was certainly true for the City of Edmonton when one of their Lovat TBM’s became inundated by flowing sand while excavating the 9.5-ft. diameter Millwoods Double Barrel Replacement Tunnel in September 2013. However, since the City of Edmonton self-performed this work, a rare situation existed where the site could be investigated objectively, without the prejudice of contending parties selectively influencing how information was gathered and presented, to accurately examine site conditions with a goal of identifying the best remediation measures."

In this study, for the first time, to confirm the effect of bacterial growth phase on the malachite flotation were investigated in a well-controlled Hallimond tube system. The test results showed that the bacteria in the stationary phase exhibit two-fold greater floatability than those in mid-exponential phase. To understand the observed flotation behavior, complementary cell characterization tests and cell attachment tests were conducted. Interestingly, the bacteria at both phases exhibited similar surface properties as well as almost identical amount of cells attached onto the malachite, suggesting that the growth phasedependent flotation behavior cannot be attributed to the variation of cell surface properties and the extent of cell adsorption. On the other hand, cell detachment tests revealed that the amount of cells detached from the malachite surface is greater for the mid-exponential phase than the stationary phase due to the higher fluid drag applied to the cells at the mid-exponential phase, which was explained by the differences in the size and shape of attached bacteria onto the malachite surface. These morphological characteristics were found to cause the bacteria of mid-exponential phase to be separated highly sensitive and easy from malachite surface due to the fluid flow. Second, scale-up selective bioflotation tests were carried out in a 1 L Denver cell in malachite–silica binary mixture systems. Through the tests, we optimized the cell concentration and the malachite fraction in the feed. Overall, high malachite selectively was observed under optimized conditions (both recovery and grade showed more than 90%). The trend was in agreement with classical DLVO interaction energy profiles, which show the relative magnitudes of the adhesive forces between the mineral and the attached cell under equal hydrodynamic conditions.

Different Au/MgO catalysts modified with Mn, and Fe were prepared by precipitation-deposition. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, FTIR, Temperature Programmed Reduction (TPR) and CO chemisorption and were tested in CO oxidation in the temperature range of 243-523 K. The catalytic tests using both Temperature Programmed Oxidation (TPO) technique and time on stream (TOS) experiments revealed the high activity of catalysts prepared. In TPO experiments the modification by Mn significantly increased the activity above 300 K, however in the subambient temperature range the activity decreased considerably. Catalysts modified by iron did not show any decrease in the activity below 300 K, while the activity at high temperature increased significantly. Catalysts modified by Mn, Fe showed higher activity, selectivity and stability in preferential CO oxidation, carried out in the presence of hydrogen than the unmodified Au/MgO catalysts. Results of in situ FTIR spectroscopy on both the base Au/MgO and the iron modified catalyst unambiguously revealed the formation of ionic gold in the presence of CO/O2 mixture. The formation of this species was strongly hindered in catalyst modified by manganese. Results obtained strongly support the need for the formation of "metal ion - metal nanocluster" ensemble sites. These sites are involved in the activation of the CO molecule prior to its reaction with atomic oxygen. It is suggested that at subambient temperature these ensemble sites contain mainly ionic forms of gold, while at higher temperature iron or manganese ions are involved in CO activation.

This paper deals with concentration of hematitic-limonitic iron ores. The ore sample obtained from Karakuz (Turkey) contain:. about 40-46 I Fe. First, a low intensity magnetic separation process was employed to separate the strongly magnetic particles cf "-10+2 mm" and "-2+0.075 mm" size fractions and magnetic concentrates with 59.1 % Fe aid % 58.0 Fe were obtained respectively. The non-magnetics of both fractions were then fed to a nigh intensity permanent magnetic separator. The Fe contents of "-10+2 nun" and "2+0.075 mm" size fractions were increased from 28.2 to 51.13 and from 35.4 7. to 43.25 respectively after single pass. Easing on these results, it was concluded that the high intensity permanent magnetic separator could he used as a pre-concentrator f.7.1- hematitic-limonitic Karakuz iron ore.

Historical-From the beginning of time, all ingenuity of mankind has been concentrated upon the methods of finding gold and unusual deposits in the earth. An illustration (Fig. 1) from the old treatise by Agricola, "De Re Metallica," published in 1580, will serve to show the im-plicit faith of that generation in divining methods. However, it was not until 1920 that real progress was made in prospecting by using the latest advances of the physical sciences. The public interest was stimulated by the successes of these methods on the part of commercial oper-ators, and governmental agencies received many requests for information concerning their relia-bility. There were also, in the late 1920's.high- pressure mine-promotion schemes which used geophysical methods in a very questionable manner, symbolized in Figure 2 as of 1928 by an elec-trified forked stick. Authoritative information concerning such practices for public protection was needed to curb such notorious undertakings. Dr. Scott Turner, then Director of the United States Bureau of Mines, thoroughly understood the situation and was first in the governmental de-partments to recognize the possible value of a study of modern prospecting methods. The Bureau of Mines began this investigation by employing Drs. A. S. Eve and D. A. Keys of McGill University for short periods in the summer in 1927. Their first publication [see 1 of "References" at end of paper] served to illustrate the fundamental scientific principles which underlie geophysical prospecting. This was followed by a second publication [21 giving the results of field-tests. In the light of the rapid improvements during the intervening ten years, these two papers take a historical position. Later a full-time position under Civil Service was planned by the Bureau of Mines for con-tinuous investigations and research concerning geophysics and its applications to prospecting. It was Turner's idea that. since the oil-industry had been making very rapid progress with good results, if mineral mining could also benefit to the same degree, it would be of great help to that industry.

Reduction of the emissions of greenhouse gases, such as CO,, is currently the subject of extensive research. A novel strategy is put forward here, based on a biomimetic approach providing accelerated deposition into carbonate form for long-term sequestration. It offers the advantages of a process that: does not require concentration of CO, from flue gases; could potentially be used in an on-site scrubber to provide a plant-by-plant solution to reducing CO, emissions; is an environmentally benign procss with an environmentally benign product; and is based on readily available, low-cost reagents (except perhaps the catalyst).

"The primary features of ViroMine™ Technology are introduced and applications of ViroMine™ Technology to mine site remediation and the treatment of a variety of intractable waste-streams, including a technical discussion of acid neutralizing capacity, metals binding capacity and longterm stability of results. Outcomes from four applications at high-profile international mine sites are presented: 1) the superfund site at the Gilt Edge Mine, South Dakota, USA (four years of data on the treatment of acidity, TDS and metals such as Al, Co, Fe, Mn and Zn); 2) one of Australia’s most polluted sites at King River Delta in Tasmania (treatment of TAA and TPA, and metal and metalloid contaminants such as As, Cr and Hg); 3) The Aljustrel “Aqua Forte” mine site in Portugal (high acidity, metal and metalloid contaminants such as Al, As, Cu and Zn) and 4) the Ulsan Iron Ore Mine at Ulsan, South Korea (treatment of metal and metalloid contaminants such as As, Cd and Ni).IntroductionThe commercialisation of ViroMine™ Technology has resolved some of the most intractable pollution issues associated with historic mining ventures on a global scale and has facilitated the neutralisation of Acid Rock Drainage (ARD), remediation of acidic and metal contaminated impoundments (including tailings dams) and promoted revegetation on tailings deposits and waste rock dumps. ViroMine™ Technology also enables current mining ventures to manage effluent simply and efficiently to meet increasingly stringent environmental standards and is enabling the mining sector to reconceptualise the management of mine spoil. The abilities of ViroMine™ reagents to neutralise the actual and potential acidity of sulphidic mine spoil coupled with the ability to bind metal and metalloid contaminants into non-bio-available forms are the key features delivering environmental and economic benefits to the mining sector and the broader community. There are various methods currently in use to determine detonation performance of bulk explosive products including velocity of detonation (VOD), high speed photographic analysis, fragmentation analysis and unconfined detonation of samples. For assessment prior to detonation the current practice is limited to a measurement of cup density. This paper presents additional techniques that have been developed to provide measurement and assessment of bulk explosive products. Techniques applicable prior to detonation include a mobile laboratory to allow on-site chemical and physical analysis of sensitised products and ‘in-hole density’ measurement to monitor the in-hole density during sleep time. Assessment of detonation performance is achieved using detonation pressure sensors. Rare Earths: Understanding The United States complete failure of status and relevance in Rare Earth Oxides, Elements and Alloys. Although rare earth oxides are strategic and critical in their own right, elements and alloys are even more important for the development of "Green Technologies" and advanced weapons systems. America does not have an active domestic source of rare earth oxides. America does not have any Heavy Rare Earth Elemental or Alloy capabilities. The magnitude of this failure continues to become more apparent as the manufacture of REO based electronics and magnetic components moves eastward towards China. China has succeeded in outmaneuvering The United States and the world in its quest to control the Rare Earth Oxides, Elements and Alloys, and the many industries dependent upon REO. Blackwater Mine is in the central-southern Bowen Basin, immediately south of the township of Blackwater on the Capricorn Highway. The current open cut operation extracts coal from three main seams, designated Top, Middle and Lower, in the Late Permian Rangal Coal Measures cropping out on the eastern flank of the Comet Ridge. Complex geological structures, dominated by E-W normal faults and N-S reverse faults, have significant detrimental effects on coal mining operations. Historical exploration before 2010 involved several types of drilling only to understand structure, coal quality and washability. Hence, although drilling data was combined with limited pit mapping and observation, unknown structures were still often encountered during excavations and led to mining surprises. In 2010 BHP completed 200-line km of closely spaced 2D seismic survey to capture gross and detailed structures followed by fit for purpose structural drilling to confirm major structures in the northern part of the mine. In 2018 a high density 9.2 km2 3D seismic survey was completed in the southern part of the mine. Subsequently, a 17.2 km2 survey was completed in 2020 to cover the northern active mining area. It allowed geoscientists to successfully map previously unknown major faults and seam splits, which could potentially impact the mineability of the area. It is important to note, that faults interpreted using modern high-density 3D data can be interpreted with dramatically higher confidence in the fault dip and azimuth orientation in comparison to the legacy 2D data. Along with targeted drilling, pit mapping and structural interpretation, the outcome adds value to mine planning and operations. This paper outlines recent successful seismic 3D data acquisition and interpretation. In detail, the paper presents case studies on how the data can be incorporated into a structural model to improve geological knowledge, enable geotechnical assessment, and support safe and efficient coal mining in a large and structurally complex mine.

Net Present Value (NPV) derived from Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis remains the dominant metric for evaluating mining projects despite its well-documented inability to capture managerial flexibility under uncertainty. DCF assumes that all risks are perfectly priced by financial markets. This is an unlikely assumption for volatile commodity prices, geological variability, or the array of mining technical and operational risks present on all mine sites. Real Options Analysis (ROA) was developed to remedy this limitation by explicitly valuing the ability of managers to defer, expand, scale, switch, or abandon investments as new information emerges, and to capture upside and mitigate downside risks. While ROA is philosophically correct and routinely shows an uplift in project value compared with DCF, its practical application at industrial scale is severely constrained, ROA faces the reality of a combinatorial explosion in complexity of decision trees, Monte Carlo simulations and other models required when multiple interdependent or sequential options exist across numerous mining zones and time periods. The AMC Hill of Value® (HoV) process adopts the same intellectual foundation as ROA, that flexibility has economic value, but operationalizes it through a far more robust and scalable architecture. It is built on parametric relationships, rapid scheduling, and multi-objective evolutionary optimisation. HoV can evaluate millions of compound, interdependent real options in a single optimisation run, delivering resilient, adaptive strategies that preserve managerial flexibility while simultaneously optimising NPV, mine life, risk exposure, and other corporate objectives. This paper demonstrates that HoV is the practical, industrial-scale embodiment of real options thinking in mining: it discovers, ranks, and translates the most valuable real options into strategic mine plans, overcoming the scalability barriers that have prevented widespread adoption of classical ROA.
