ABOUT three miles west of Fontana San Bernardino County, California, and fifty miles east of Los Angeles, the Kaiser Co., Inc., has built an integrated steel plant. By integrated, I mean that from its wholly owned iron ore and coal supply, the Kaiser Co. is producing in its own mills iron and steel products. Pig iron to meet the West Coast needs has been produced at Fontana since Jan. 1, 1943; steel ingots were first poured there May 14, 1943; and steel plate for ships was first rolled Aug. 15, just sixteen months after ground was broken. Briefly, the plant consists of: (I) Two batteries of by-product coke ovens, totalling ninety ovens, carbonizing about 1740 tons of coal per day at capacity; with by-product facilities for the production of tar, ammonia, and ammonium suIphate, light oil distillates, and tar distillates. In a deep, gassy predrained coalmine, ventilation and goaf drainage systems act as critical controls to manage longwall (LW) panel return gas levels. The goaf capture efficiency of most LW panels ranges from 45 to 85 per cent based on the gas domain at respective workings. Recent operational experiences have indicated that 50 m goaf hole spacing is optimal for management of high production retreat gassy LW panels, where the probability of goaf hole failures are frequent. Due to the horizontal stress direction geotechnical issues, goaf hole failure just behind the LW face is a recurring challenge resulting in significant and immediate increases in LW panel return gas levels. This paper presents a successful implementation of an innovative LW tailgate (TG) road cut through seal goaf fan/venturi system. The system incorporated a 17' (400 mm cased) hole drilled to 320 m deep in a perimeter roadway on a retreating LW TG road drawing the working seam horizon goaf gas behind the perimeter of seals. The surface goaf fan/venturi system was aimed to safely exhaust the LW deep goaf gas and thus withhold the goaf stream spillage to TG drive area and reduce the panel gas load by controlled operation of the system using continuous monitoring of CH4, CO and O2 levels. This control philosophy was made operational without impacting the use of the perimeter inbye ventilation shaft used for mine cooling and providing additional ventilation dilution capacity. The instantaneous reduction in TG gas levels of up to 0.3 per cent was observed even when the LW was 300 m away from the c/t seal goaf hole. Success of this concept TG seal goaf gas control system used even when the LW was 1300 m outbye has become an inventory of additional control for future deep and long LW blocks. The oft-repeated expression that the taproot of safety lies in the attitude of the management toward accident-prevention work is indisputable and has become almost an axiom. Trite and somewhat timeworn though the statement may be, it is nevertheless true that the supervisory force must earnestly support a policy of safety and maintain at all times a con¬ siderate regard for the welfare of the employee if that high degree of cooperation of the employee, so vital to the successful prosecution of any safety program, is to be expected. The responsibility for preventing accidents rests upon the management, and in the case of the Spring Canyon Coal Co. such responsibility is recognized and accepted with little or no reservation. This company, aside from the humanitarian aspects involved, believes that safety is good business and not a matter to be treated passively or in a perfunctory manner. The problems with respect to safety that have been met and wholly or partly solved can best be appreciated when some of the natural conditions, adverse and otherwise, existing at this operation are taken into consideration. Mine 1 is about 1 mile north of the town of Spring Canyon, Carbon County, Utah, and is served by both the Denver & Rio Grande Western and Utah Coal Route railways. During the year 1931 the mine produced 312,397 tons, approximately 10 per cent being derived from pillar workings. The normal daily output during the summer months is about 2,000 tons, and during the peak of production in the winter season the daily production varies from 2,500 to 3,000 tons. The number of miners varies from 87 in summer to 220 in winter, and the day men vary in number from 66 in the winter to 45 in the summer; 12 company men are employed the year around. Murphy, superintendent, David Brown, assistant superintendent, and John Sullivan, mine foreman, all of Spring Canyon, Utah.

The practical concern of economic minability of large, high-grade manganese nodule deposits in the northeast Pacific Ocean is addressed in this Bureau of Mines report. Principal objectives are to (1) estimate tonnage and grade of deposits with significant potential and (2) describe and estimate profitability of operations designed to mine and process deposits with greatest apparent potential. Analysis of data from over 800 ship stations identified three areas for detailed study. Average metal contents of these areas range from 1.30 to 1.45 wt pet nickel, 1.00 to 1.24 wt pct copper, 0.21 to 0.26 wt pct cobalt, and 26.8 to 27.8 wt pct manganese. Estimated recoverable nodule resources are 67.0, 66.9, and 148.8 million dry metric tons (t). A system to mine, transport, and process nodules from the three sites is described and costed. Although hypothetical, the system utilizes hydraulic mining and Cuprion (Kennecott) processing, which have been successfully tested at pilot scale. Nickel, copper, and cobalt are the three primary products, but ferromanganese is a considered option. Estimated capital requirements are approximately $1.5 to $1.7 billion for three-metal production. If ferromanganese were recovered, an additional investment of about $130 million would be required. Operating costs range from $71 to $83 per dry metric ton of nodules without manganese, and from $103 to $123 per dry metric ton with ferromanganese. Discounted cash flow analyses predict low returns, ranging from 2.7 to 5.2 pct with ferromanganese and from 4.1 to 6.0 pct without.

This paper deals mainly with the modernization in the coal loading system at the loading piers of the Dominion Coal Company, Ltd., Sydney, Nova Scotia. The history of the operation is briefly outlined, and the construction of the Company's new pier is described in considerable de-tail. Particular attention is paid to the bins and conveyors, and to the loading tower. The paper concludes with a description of the S.S. Cape Breton Miner, built specifically for the coal trade, and the unloading facilities at Lakeview, Ontario. Coal Shipping at Sydney C OAL from the mines operated in Cape Breton by the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, has been shipped from the International Piers, situated on the east side of Sydney Harbour, for over sixty years. There were three piers, of which two were active-ly used in the shipping of coal until 1964. Nos. 2 and 3 were high piers about 600 feet long, of wooden construction throughout. They were founded on' rock-filled cribs and creosoted piles driven into the harbour bottom, and each had two decks which carried standard-gauge railway tracks.

The gas producer actually dates back far beyond the period from which we first find recorded data. A partial production of producer gas can take place in any type of solid fuel grate equipment, such as a boiler, or even a fireplace if a sufficiently deep fuel bed is provided. Those of us who have watched a coal fire burning in the hearth, have no doubt noticed at times, the gases liberated by the heat burning on or near the surface of the fuel bed. So far as we know, the first gas producer was built by Bischof in Germany in 1839, followed by Ebelman in France in 1840, and Ekman of Sweden in 1845. The first large industrial development in the use of gas producers was When the two Siemens brothers of Germany patented their first combined gas producer and regenerative furnace in 1861, thus opening up the field for the use of raw, crude producer gas in heavy furnace work. In the years 1879-1881 J, E, Dowson, of England developed a producer gas cooling and cleaning plant, which extended the scope of application of producer gas to make possible its use in small furnaces and gas engines.

This report is principally concerned with the engineering and economic feasibility of area surface coal mining systems other than draglines. This analysis evaluates shovel/ trucks, shovel/crusher/conveyors, and shovel/rail excavation and haulage systems for an assortment of geologic environments and production rates in the Powder River Basin (PRB) Shovel/trucks, front-end loaders/ trucks, and shovel/crusher/conveyors were studied in a multi-seam, dipping geologic area of the Four Corners Region. The Texas lignite engineering and economic research involved bucket-wheel excavators (BWE), BWE/backhoes, and scraper/backhoe combinations for overburden and coal excavation. The PRE truck/shovel study utilized the most recent computer simulation available in both the design and cost analyses. Detailed engineering analysis, followed by in-depth operating costs (operating and depreciation) result in a complete evaluation of each mining system. Cost comparisons of the different mining systems under similar geologic and production constraints are presented in the report to illustrate the estimated capital investment and production costs per ton of coal and bank cubic yard of overburden.

While refuge chambers are common place in most underground mining projects, there are different philosophies as to what life support systems are to be considered and how these systems are to be applied. Case studies in the underground mining industry have examples of emergencies where the external compressed air and power supply to the refuge chamber were compromised due to proximity of services to the fire location. In 2005, The Department of Industry and Resources, Western Australia, drafted guidelines that listed specific requirements for refuge chambers which included a secondary life support system that would operate independently of external sources. The objective of this document is to examine what critical life support systems are essential for safe entrapment in the event of an emergency and to examine considerations for their application.

This paper examines the fire life systems implemented in two existing tunnels and discusses whether the standards used were appropriate. It focuses on the Terrace Tunnel as this upgrade and refurbishment is complete.The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) manages six tunnels on the State Highway network with two of these built in the last seven years. The Terrace Tunnel, opened in 1978, was refurbished with modern fire life safety systems in 2010–2012. An interim upgrade of the Mt Victoria Tunnel, opened in 1931, was also carried out at this time.In present times, few existing tunnels have undergone significant upgrades and refurbishments. The Terrace Tunnel required: new power supplies, control buildings, lighting, wall panels and jet fans, a deluge system, emergency exit lights and way-finding lights, a public address (PA) system, a radio rebroadcast system, lane control sign (LCS) and variable message sign (VMS), an over-height detection system (OHD) and a new tunnel management system.In the absence of suitable guidelines, various standards were used to carry out the refurbishment. The Austroad Guide to Road Tunnels and AS4825 Tunnel Fire Safety, although designed for new tunnels and not specifically intended for existing tunnels, provided a framework. A multi-criteria assessment of risk (MCAT) was carried out to determine the systems to be provided.The Terrace Tunnel has perhaps set a benchmark for refurbishing existing tunnels as few projects of this type have been completed recently. Around the world many potash mines experience brine inflow problems. The presence of brine in underground excavations may induce structural and stability problems. A study has been carried out to simulate the effect of brine on the performance of pillar support. The testing program consisted of loading potash specimens in a creep frame, and simulating inflows by continuously pumping brine into an experimental cell. Brine temperatures and load conditions were varied to simulate several mining and inflow conditions. Specimens were fitted with acoustic emission transducers to monitor energy emissions during an eight-hour test duration. Samples of brine were also collected to provide K+ and Na+ concentration data necessary for an accurate assessment of the dissolution process. Test results indicated that dissolution rates are highly dependent on brine temperature and load conditions. Loads approaching 50% UCS tend to generate very high rates of energy emissions, often leading to the failure of the simulated pillars. This study demonstrated that acoustic emission could be effectively used for predicting the performance of pillars when exposed to inflow brine.

Consumption of plastics has been growing in both the U.S. and world markets since the mid-1930s. This growth is due to plastics being used to make new products and as a replacement material for existing products. This paper develops an understanding of the replacement process by looking at the use of plastic, specifically PVC, in the construction pipe industry. History details the growth of the plastics industry and a discussion of the material selection process indicates the advantages and disadvantages of plastic pipe. Analysis shows that the use of plastic, as an alternative material for pipe, is having a significant effect on the cast iron, copper, clay, and steel industries. For the purpose of understanding the replacement process, three example residential systems were examined with a lifecycle cost analysis being performed. PVC was the material of choice in 1988 for all systems. Even though disposal cost was the one area where PVC was not the most cost effective, disposal costs were not sufficient to offset the overall advantage of using PVC on an economic basis. That plastic competes effectively with other materials, in terms of material properties and cost, indicates that further work should be performed to understand the impact plastics have on other material markets.

"An underground environment with high air temperature and humidity conditions generated from various heat and moisture sources can significantly affect the thermoregulation processes of the human body. This can lead to a series of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat stroke. The majority of the metabolic energy of a mine worker results in the production of heat. If the human body is to maintain thermal equilibrium, then this metabolic heat must be transferred to the ambient surroundings at the same rate. The heat loss from the human body occurs through a combination of heat transfer processes, such as respiratory heat exchange, convection, radiation and evaporation. If the heat loss from the human body to the ambient surroundings is less than the metabolic heat produced, the excess will be accumulated within the human body, which will result in a rise in the core and skin temperatures. This can ultimately lead to a heat-related illness or a combination of heat-related illnesses. This paper aims to discuss major heat-related issues and provide an overview of various mine ventilation and cooling systems, which can be employed to overcome high levels of heat and humidity in underground mines. In this paper, the effects of heat exposure on the health, safety and productivity of the mine workers are also highlighted. IntroductionMining in the United States remains one of the most hazardous industries, despite significant reductions in fatal injuries over the last century (Coleman and Kerkering, 2007; Saleh and Cummings 2011; Jacklitsch, Musolin and Kim, 2016). Occupational health hazards within the mining industry include hazards that are physical, such as traumatic injury or hearing loss; chemical, such as silica or diesel particulate matter; biological; ergonomic; and psychological (Donoghue, 2004; Saleh and Cummings, 2011). The effects of some of these hazards can be diagnosed immediately, while many, like black-lung and silicosis, will have long-term effects on the health, safety and life quality of mine workers (Donoghue, 2004; National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, NIOSH, 2000). Among these hazards, exposure to heat and humidity can significantly affect the safety, health and productivity of mine workers, particularly in deep and hot underground mines (Roghanchi, Sunkpal and Kocsis, 2015). Short-term acute heat exposures can cause a rise in the core temperature of the human body, which can result in a heat-related illness or combination of heat-related illnesses. Adverse long-term chronic heat exposure can generate serious occupational heat-related illnesses, such as cardiovascular diseases, mental health problems and chronic kidney diseases. High core body temperatures coupled with dehydration can generate negative behavioral effects such as physical fatigue, irritability, lethargy, impaired judgment, loss of dexterity and loss of concentration (Xiang et al., 2014)"

The National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) is a partnership program to stimulate innovative research and workplace interventions. In combination with other initiatives, the products of this program are expected to reduce the occurrence of injuries and illnesses at work. Unveiled in 1996, NORA has become a research framework for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the United States. Diverse parties collaborate to identify the most critical issues in workplace safety and health and develop research objectives for addressing those issues. NORA entered its third decade in 2016 with an enhanced structure. The 10 sectors formed for the second decade will continue to prioritize occupational safety and health research by major areas of the U.S. economy. In addition, NORA’s seven cross-sectors will continue to focus on the major health and safety issues affecting the U.S. working population. While NIOSH serves as the steward to move this effort forward, it is truly a national effort. NORA is carried out through councils comprised of members with many diverse interests that are developing and implementing research agendas for the occupational safety and health community over the third decade (2016-2026) of NORA. Councils address objectives through information exchange, partnership building, and enhanced dissemination and implementation of evidenced-based solutions. NORA groups industries into 10 sectors using North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. The Mining Sector encompasses NAICS code grouping 21xxxx where “xxxx” represents the different subcodes of the mining “21” classification. Mining encompasses the extraction of solid mineral and mineral-like substances from their place in the Earth’s crust and supplies them to processing industries that produce economically valuable materials. It does not include oil and gas extraction. The Mine Safety and Health Administration, MSHA separates mining into coal, underground and surface, and metal and nonmetal, underground and surface.

THE Great War forced the peoples of the world to recognize the importance of the wise development and use of the world's natural resources. Not the least, and perhaps the most, important, is the world's fuel supply- solid, liquid, and gaseous. Without fuel our civilization would be impossible, and mankind would of necessity have to congregate in the torrid zones of the earth's surface for at least six months of every year. Of the three classes of fuels the solid ones are the most plentiful, as well as being the most widely distributed, since few countries are entirely devoid of solid fuels of one kind or another. Until a hundred years ago wood was the fuel most generally used in this country, but since then coal has supplanted wood as a fuel in all its uses, except in the outlying districts and among the farming communities. For many years the supply of coal was thought to be unlimited, but as years went by more thought and study were given to the world's coal resources, until today not only are the limits known, but in one instance at least their depletion is predicted to be almost within the age of living men, unless more provident methods are put into practice for their winning and utilization.

The drilled shafts that support transmission lines and substations have been increasingly subject to testing to assess the integrity of placed concrete. Cross-hole Sonic Logging (CSL) has been used, but large diameter shafts with challenging site access are generally more favorable to Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP) testing. TIP testing assesses the shafts based on measurements of the concrete temperature during curing. The TIP results provide assessment of integrity both within and outside the cage, along with information about the alignment of the cage and concrete cover. This data has allowed shafts with imperfect results to be subject to more detailed structural evaluations. However, it may not be well understood how to use this additional information by designers and engineers. The purpose of this paper is to present TIP results of transmission line foundations, both with and without issues with integrity, including cage shifting, minimal concrete cover, or soil inclusions. The intent is to provide general guidelines of the issues that merit additional investigation and those that should be recognized as inconsistencies inherent to underground construction. BACKGROUND This paper is intended to discuss some of the drilled shaft evaluations made when TIP testing is performed. The authors of this paper were recently involved with a transmission line project that was designed and constructed for a Confidential Utility Client located in the Midwest United States. The project was delivered as an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract with the electrical line construction company as the prime contractor. The contractor then subcontracted several parts of the work which included engineering for transmission line and foundation design, foundation construction, and third-party testing intended to evaluate the concrete homogeneity and integrity of the place concrete in the deep foundations. The testing method selected was Thermal Integrity Profiling Method B, which uses thermal sensors embedded in the concrete. The TIP testing was administered by Mr. Travis Coleman with GRL Engineers, Inc. Mr. Ryan Weaver with Burns & McDonnell served as the owner’s engineer and technical consultant for the utility and was responsible for reviewing submitted TIP reports and providing recommendations to the utility on their acceptance, and if there were any issues that would warrant further discussion and analysis.

The paper gives a synthesis of research work performed in the department during the last ten years and dealing with cobalt , copper and manganese electrodeposition in chloride aqueous solutions. Special emphasis is given to electrocrystallization. For copper, properties of the electrolyte such as solubility limits, electrical conductivity and complex ions stability are discussed in connection with leaching, purification of the electrolyte, and metal recovery. When possible, kinetic parameters and probable electrode mechanisms are given. Problems that are still to be solved are also listed.

This report gives the results of 26 tests of a four-pass Edgemoor boiler fired with powdered coal at the Lakeside station of the Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Co. The tests were made by the fuel section of the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the research department of the Combustion Engineering Corporation and the operating department of the Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Co. The object of the tests was to determine the thermal efficiencies and capacities obtainable by burning powdered coal under large central-station boilers, and the possibility of operating such boilers continuously at high efficiency and capacity without destructive effect on the furnaces and without difficulties in refuse removal. In any system for burning pulverized coal the furnace is the most important part because, to justify the cost of pulverizing, the powdered coal must be burned with higher efficiency than coal fired with mechanical stokers. In other words, it is the furnace that by giving higher thermal efficiency must pay for the installation, maintenance, and operation of the pulverizing equipment. No matter how simple the apparatus for the preparation of pulverized coal may be, or how simple the pulverizing process, unless the furnace is so designed that it can be operated continuously with high thermal efficiency, the whole system is a failure. For high thermal efficiency the coal must be burned almost completely with low excess air. But low excess air and complete combustion give high furnace temperature, which in turn causes erosion of the furnace lining and fusion of the ash; and removal of the fused ash is difficult. The necessity of complete combustion with low excess air thus brings with it these two important problems in the design of a furnace for burning powdered coal: 1, Prevention of erosion of the furnace lining; 2, easy removal of refuse from the furnace. For the purpose of solving these problems, the boiler tested was equipped with a furnace having hollow walls, through which about 60 per cent of the air needed for combustion passed before it entered the furnace. By passing through the hollow walls, the air cooled the furnace lining and prevented excessive erosion. A water screen was placed in the furnace about 3 feet above the bottom to keep the refuse deposited at the bottom from fusing and to make its removal easy. The design of the furnace, water screen, and burners was based on the experience gained in the previous cooperative tests1 with a smaller furnace, experimental water screen, and burners at the Oneida Street station of the Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Co. The boiler tested had 13,057 square feet of heating surface. It was one of eight boilers fired with powdered coal, and was designated as boiler No. 8. The Lakeside station is the largest central station in the world that burns powdered coal exclusively. The coal used in the first five tests came from Illinois. The fuel in the other tests -:vas a mixture of Illinois and Pittsburgh coals.

"The agitator design for nickel high pressure acid leach autoclaves (HPAL) is critical with regard to the process result, i.e., the recovery rate. Further considerations during the design phase are the avoidance of acid hot spots which reduce the lifetime, due to corrosion of the wetted parts, including components manufactured from titanium. Besides the process knowledge to design HPAL autoclaves, tools such as, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) supplemented by lab testing allow the design of optimized agitation systems. This paper describes the effect that different feed point locations have on instantaneous blending of the reactants. Furthermore, experiments and CFD show where abrasion issues might occur and how to obtain information about the static and dynamic forces acting on internals. We show how simulations can be validated by lab testing to ensure that the CFD models are applied in an appropriate way.INTRODUCTIONAgitated systems in hydrometallurgical processes have to comply with multiple process tasks and in many cases have to withstand extreme operation conditions such as pressure up to 50 bar, elevated temperatures of up to 250°C and exposure to very acidic or alkaline environments and abrasive ores. The process tasks range from instantaneous mixing of reactants, homogeneous suspensions of up to 65% wt. solids with coarse and heavy particles, enhancing the solid-liquid mass transfer for leaching, dispersing large volumes of reactants (gas-liquid, liquid-liquid mass transfer) and moreover to transport generated heat e.g., from exothermic reactions through the vessel walls or internal heat exchangers if required. For economies of scale, agitator systems have reached sizes of 5000 m³ for large open leach tanks with impeller diameters of approx. 6 m, while autoclaves nowadays have exceeded 5.5 meters in diameter with a power demand for a single compartment drive between 300 - 400 kW. In parallel all process industries require a more efficient use of resources, to generate less by-products and higher yields, while ore-bodies tend to be less qualitative and new process routes (e.g. direct leach) are developed. Besides all these facts the mixing solution must be robust and economic. In this paper we want to address our approach in the development and designing of HPAL agitation equipment."
