Explosive properties are typically summarised on manufacturers’ technical data sheets. The values most commonly referred to are the density of the explosive, the energy it is expected to release and its velocity of detonation (VOD). This information is provided so that blasting engineers can make a considered selection of the most appropriate product for a particular blasting application. As an example, a lower VOD and energy product is better suited to blasting in soft, weathered material. In contrast, blasting hard, competent material generally requires a higher energy product which is usually characterised by higher VOD and energy.A review of the technical information supplied by manufacturers shows a wide range of methods of reporting both VOD and energy. A meaningful comparison between products from different suppliers is almost impossible to achieve based on these data. For a similar product, one supplier may have a VOD range of 2800–5800 m/s and a relative bulk strength of 1.34 while a corresponding product from another supplier is quoted with a VOD range of 3100–6300 m/s and a relative bulk strength of 192. In the end, the user has to rely on the level of confidence available from their experience using a certain type of explosive in the type of rock to be blasted at that mine.This paper reviews some of the technical and supporting information that is freely available in the literature and attempts to provide some clarity as to what the numbers that are reported actually mean for the end user. "According to the geometrical characteristics of triangular meshes, Triangular Mesh Split Model (TMSM) based on a finite element method is proposed to simulate cracks propagation of fractured rock. With TMSM, stress intensity factors at the tip of cracks are obtained by far-field contour integral. Meanwhile, vector cross multiplication is adopted to fix the cracking unit, and maximum circumferential stress criterion is used to determine the crack propagation angle. Then crack dynamic propagation simulation is realized through local mesh split or node movement at crack tip. With this method, the crack can split apart a unit or extend along the mesh boundary, so the crack could extend along an arbitrary path and is not restricted by the initial mesh. The applicability of the mesh split algorithm is verified by the crack propagation examples of wing crack and multi-fractured rock mass with holes. The results show that this method not only has higher accuracy of fracture parameters calculation, but also can accurately simulate the crack initiation and propagation of rock under complex stress state such as tension, compression and shear. In addition, the far contour integral is introduced to determine the crack tip stress intensity factor and there is no need to reconstruct a singular element at the crack tip or to intensify the meshes. Compared with the existing mesh reconstruction algorithm, this method significantly improves the computational efficiency.INTRODUCTIONGenerally, rock is neither the full continuum, nor entirely discrete body, but rich in geological defects, such as joints and cracks. A large amount of geotechnical engineering practice shows that most fracture of rock is closely related to the internal joints, cracks and crack expansion (Horii et al., 1985; Wong et al., 1998). Although the classical theory of fracture mechanics established the theoretical foundation of crack initiation, propagation, so far it is still extremely difficult to characterize the propagation of airfoil-typed crack and the interference problem of multiple cracks. Up to now, the micromechanics mechanism research of crack propagation of fractured rocks has still been a hot research topic of rock fracture mechanics."

"The design of the tunnels at Bond Street Station includes a final sprayed concrete fireproofing layer. The performance of this layer was verified by a program of testing to Crossrail’s KT24 specification, which proved that a dosage of 1kg/m³ polypropylene fibers and a layer thickness of 50mm would be sufficient to limit spalling in the event of a fire. Application of this thin layer was achieved using a state of the art spraying robot, with the ability to scan the profile and automatically apply a uniform layer of concrete. To provide assurance and calibrate this spraying robot, BFK developed a bespoke survey system for checking SCL thicknesses in the field. This provided an instant independent check of the spraying robot and allowed areas of inadequate thickness to be rectified without risk of cold joints. This paper describes the practical application of the fireproofing layer and how design compliance was ensured. INTRODUCTION Fire is one of the most serious risks to a tunnel. The nature of tunnels — being long enclosed spaces — can increase the intensity of a fire, and make fire-fighting and rescue operations difficult. The damage that can be caused has been demonstrated by a number of historic tunnel fires, such as the Channel Tunnel fires of 1996 and 2008, and the Mont Blanc Tunnel fire in 1999. Without any intervention, the high temperatures in a fire create thermal stresses and a build-up of vapor pressure within the pores of concrete, which eventually exceed the tensile strength and trigger explosive spalling. Spalling exposes the core of the section to severe temperatures, leading to a loss of concrete and steel reinforcement strength or further spalling of successive layers. The concrete used in tunnel linings is particularly susceptible to explosive spalling, due to its low permeability achieved by the addition of microsilica (Bailey 2011). The sprayed concrete lined (SCL) tunnels on Crossrail have been designed to resist the worst anticipated fire in operation, in order to prevent collapse and minimize damage to the structure. The design called for a system of passive fire protection, the efficacy of which was validated by the contractor through a testing regime. It was critical that the application on site reflected the test conditions, which demanded special control of the profile and thickness of the lining. In order to meet these constraints on tolerances and quality, BAM Ferrovial Kier joint venture (BFK) developed a reliable method of working with the Meyco Logica spraying robot, and a bespoke survey system for accurately checking thicknesses in the field. It is globally recognised that existing and emerging mining activities should be conducted in a æsustainableÆ manner for the entire life of mine. Many companies annually publish corporate sustainability reports to demonstrate their actions in accordance with international expectations. This concept of sustainable mining practices also applies to mine water management, with influences often extending beyond site operations, affecting surrounding catchments and community users. This paper explores differences in conceptual and operational terms of æsustainableÆ mine water management within the Philippines. Outcomes of a review of corporate sustainability reports, governance documentation, research programs, and stakeholder knowledge acquired through action-research workshops are presented. The paper aims to inform and support future capacity building exercises delivered by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC), with outcomes tailored to government officials and policy makers of developing countries. Danieli Linz Technology has been honored at 4.1.2013 with the first contract for the exchange of a 350 t BOF converter for ArcelorMittal Poland Dabrowa Gornicza on a turnkey basis. This paper describes the new design features of this converter based on the development of a new Danieli converter suspension system. The issue was to install a new converter (incl. trunnion ring, suspension system and bearings) with maximum volume but keeping most of the existing equipment unchanged. So, the big tilting drives on both sides had to be reused and the existing foundation, pedestals as well as the bearing distance had to be maintained. Further on the welded coreequipment (vessel shell, trunnion ring, pedestals, slag shields, etc.) was manufactured in-house within the pressure vessel division of Danieli Thailand. Due to the huge dimensions of these parts the delivery had to take place in parts which had to be welded together on site under full production conditions of the steel plant. But also the erection had to be applied under this condition. Additionally the main support bearings, parts of the screening (doghouse) as well as an upgrade of the existing relining machine had to be delivered.

The Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 provides few specifics to assist the non-fuel mining and mineral processing industries of the United States in achieving pollution prevention (P2) compliance. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) recognizes the absence of specific information to reduce pollution impacts from mining and mineral processing of hardrock and industrial minerals. Therefore, the USBM has prepared this publication to help reduce or eliminate environmental pollution and to assure the viability of these segments of the domestic mining industry. This report includes worksheets designed to help operators of mining and milling facilities to establish a P2 program. The report can also be used by citizen and environmental groups, State and local governments, and academia to gain an understanding of P2 as it relates to mining and mineral processing.

The use of dewatered mine tailings as backfill material (commonly referred to as ‘paste’ backfill), is the most practiced form of backfill in Canada providing significant environmental benefits by reducing the size of external tailings facilities and improved economics through enhanced resource recovery. Paste backfill operations reuse filtered mine tailings with a cementitious binder and water to create a slurry that is hydraulically transported to refill underground stopes, later forming a structural network of cemented tailings in the mine stopes. Unlike typical structural applications that utilize General Use (GU) Portland cement; modern paste backfill operations maximize strength performance by blending Portland cement with ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) or other supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). GGBFS and other SCMs offer key performance benefits and carbon reductions; however, the availability of these SCMs is rapidly dwindling in today’s carbon-constrained economy. This paper examines the development of an alternative binder system that provides similar performance and carbon reduction to that of GGBFS for mine backfill operations. The binder utilizes the chemical reaction between a reactive source of aluminosilicates and available calcium from calcium oxide or calcium hydroxide to replace between 50 to 100% of GGBFS. The performance of the binder is examined with insights into the hydration mechanisms that generate mechanical strength in the cemented paste network. Paste backfill slurries require precise engineering to create a material that maintains flowability during pipeline transport and generates enough strength to meet operational targets once placed in the stopes. Engineering of such slurries requires large amounts of water to be added to the binder-tailings matrix, far exceeding the typical water to binder ratios used in concrete mix designs. This characteristic of paste backfill warrants great emphasis on understanding the hydration mechanisms of the binder used in the paste backfill system. GU cement is typically composed of 50-70% tricalcium silicate and 15-30% dicalcium silicate.  The hydration mechanisms of these compounds consume 4 to 6 units of water to mineralize into calcium silicate hydrate cemented phases that result in compressive strength development. Cementitious aluminate and aluminosilicate phases make up 5-20% of GU cement and aid in secondary performance characteristics such as set time. Certain calcium aluminate hydrate phases such as monocarboaluminate and ettringite mineralize 10 to 32 units of water into their crystalline structure. Hydration products such as ettringite are traditionally avoided in construction applications due to their propensity for volumetric expansion after cement setting, leading to micro-fissures and subsequent strength degradation (known as ‘sulfate attack’). This paper proposes that such hydration products benefit the strength development in paste backfill slurries with the aforementioned characteristics due to their greater potential to mineralize free water. The newly developed calcium aluminosilicate binder is designed to replace 50-100% GGBFS or other SCMs used in paste backfill systems and meet operational strength requirements by providing exceptional hydration characteristics through cementitious reactions. Additionally, the aluminosilicates used have a minimal carbon footprint and a secure supply outlook, thereby allowing mine operators access to a low-carbon binder option throughout the mine’s lifespan.

The development of the Seminole area into one of the major oil-producing sections of the country has been accompanied by many innovations and departures from former methods of development. On July 1, 1929, two years and nine months from the date of discovery, 20,490 acres were considered proved, and additional acreage is constantly being developed. Because of its peculiar conditions, extent, and rapid rate of development, the Seminole area provided numerous problems, the solution of which necessitated research in connection with practical field operation; as a result, there was a radical departure from methods usually employed in the development of a new field in the Mid-Continent area.

"PURPOSE OF REPORTMany bituminous coal-mine officials realize that coal dust presents an ever-present coal-mine explosion hazard, and that persons forced to breathe large quantities of it may be more subject to respiratory infection than persons working in less dusty atmospheres. As an outgrowth of the realization that coal dust should be allayed at its source, many mining companies have expressed the desire to install dust-allaying equipment, and in a number of mines, water or wetting solution is being applied on the cutter bars of mining machines, on mobile loaders, belts or conveyors underground, and tops of mine cars. Spraying equipment also has been installed on dumps to allay dust during dumping operations. Dust-allaying equipment has not been standardized, however, because manufacturers have found that many prospective purchasers of such equipment have different ideas. These manufacturers wish to standardize, so far as feasible, the types and placement of such equipment. Many mine officials, although interested, do not know the best or most effective methods for allaying dust.For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has advocated allaying dust by applying water or, more recently, water modified by a wetting agent on the cutter bar of mining machines and by applying water to loaded and empty mine cars in order to keep as much dust as possible from spilling onto the haulage roads. In recent years this Bureau has also advocated applying water with or without a wetting agent during mechanical loading of coal and during unloading of coal from trackless cars or buggies and from elevating conveyors. It has now become apparent that specific arrangement of pipes, hose, and nozzles should be standardized to at least some extent. It is the purpose of this report, therefore, to give in detail suggested arrangement of dust-allaying equipment in the hope that both manufacturers and mine officials will have available dust-allaying equipment with maximum efficiency to do the desired work."

The Office of Coal Research Program has been outlined in our Annual Report for a number of years and reported on by various members of the OCR staff as well as by our contractors. The program is national in scope and is intended to develop new and improved uses for our Nation's coal resources and to maintain coal in a favorable economic position, vis-a-vis, the other energy forms. A program has been developed that includes conversion of coal to gas, gasoline and other petroleum-type products, and to electricity. These projects are only one facet of the OCR program albeit an important one. In many of the conversion projects we have underway, original development work has been done with bituminous and sub-bituminous coal. It is the intention of this paper to present a general outline as to how lignite might fit into one or more of these projects as a raw material. Our national lignite reserves are vast in scope and this has been recognized in the OCR program by development of a project specifically for lignite and by including lignite as a test raw material in many other projects. Project Lignite is intended to develop the Cop Acceptor Process for conversion of lignite to a high B.t.u. gas. In this effort we have included the design, construction, and operation of a lignite gasification plant at Rapid City, South Dakota. The work is being conducted by the Consolidation Coal Company and is an outgrowth of their laboratory development of this process. The first portion of our effort included a detailed economic study of a somewhat arbitrary grouping of States designated Market Area A that could be expected to use gas manufactured in a lignite gasification plant. The area included the Dakotas, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Iowa. This geographical area could readily be served if a process could be developed for converting North Dakota's lignite reserves, estimated at 351 billion tons, to high B.t.u. gas. Our study showed that Market Area A had a potential commercial- industrial market of one trillion cubic feet of gas a year. To meet this demand, we believe that part of the load can be obtained from commercial lignite-to-gas plants. At the time of our original study, we concluded that gas could be delivered to the city gate in Market Area A at about 45¢. As a result of price escalation in the interim, our estimate today might be slightly higher, but not significantly so, since some parts of the process appear better today than they did at the time of the original projection.

This examination of Pacific Northwest (Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington) ferrous scrap-industry operations, principally those in Oregon and Washington, points out factors influencing the supply and consumption of scrap materials, such as the complete dependence of steel ingot producers in these States on scrap as a metal raw material and the sizable quantity of scrap exported from Seattle and Portland to Japan. The pattern of the industry is presented as a movement of materials from their diverse sources to the consuming market. The geographic locations of the consuming industries in relation to the areas generating scrap materials and the movement pattern of the supply from source to destination strongly influences the cost of the commodity. The best measure of the scrap supply available in an area is experience in terms of how much scrap was withdrawn at a given price. Scrap availability is not finite, because the return of materials as scrap is secular and influenced by constantly varying market conditions. Steel ingot producers use 75 percent of the approximate 500,000 tons of scrap consumed in Oregon and Washington; steel foundries take 15 percent of the total; and iron foundries, ferroalloy plants, and other miscellaneous consumers utilize the remainder. Also, from 1955 to 1960 an average of about 200,000 tons has been exported annually from Oregon and Washington. The foreign exports are supplemented by lesser shipments to other steel producing States, principally in the western United States. From 1955 to 1960 the preferred and higher value heavy melting scrap grades accounted for about 60 percent of total withdrawals which varied between 600,000 and 950,000 tons annually. Total crap withdrawals from Oregon and Washington are projected to 1.8 million tons by 1985, 60 percent (1.1 million tons) of which will be heavy melting grades. No. 1 heavy melting scrap is most attractive to scrap consumers at $35 per ton or less. Price-supply relationships compared with projected scrap requirements indicate future prices possibly over $35 per ton. High prices over a long period could motivate the Pacific Northwest scrap consumers to produce steel from iron ore. However, technologic changes taking place at integrated steel plants could reduce scrap withdrawals from the Pacific Northwest, which might keep the scrap price sufficiently attractive to obviate production of competitive iron products by the Pacific Northwest scrap consumers.

Anthracite preparation developments, particularly in the early days of the anthracite industry, formed the basis for the modern coal preparation plants that have become so essential to the coal industry today. The anthracite industry, from early in the 19th century until relatively recently, was a leader in mining, preparation and marketing of coal, and played a leading role in the development of the industrial America we know today. Anthracite was discovered in America in about 1760--the story of Necho Allen is well known--but the rediscoveries leading to mining operations took place about 50 years later. The Wurtz brothers in 1815 at Scranton, the Smith brothers at Wilkes-Barre in 1807, Beach in Hazleton in about 1814, and Boyd in 1816 at Shamokin were all instrumental in promoting early mining and marketing of anthracite (J3. The early canals and railroads were built for the specific purpose of moving anthracite to the market areas. Eventually, the industry grew until, in 1917, it reached a production zenith of a little over 100,000,000 tons, representing about 20 percent of the total coal output in the United States. Almost half of the anthracite produced that year was consumed for domestic heating, a utilization that had dominated the industry for almost 100 years. Initially, anthracite had to be used by gunsmiths and blacksmiths, after which had followed the consumption of extensive quantities for railroads, blast furnaces and foundries, and electric power generation. Most of the markets have been lost to coke, oil, and natural gas. Near the anthracite regions, however, significant quantities are still used for domestic heating, power generation, carbon black manufacture, blending with bituminous coal to make metallurgical coke and fuel, and for other industrial purposes. Thus, anthracite production has not been entirely committed to history, but remains an active industry that follows modern practices in the mining, preparation, shipping, and utilization of a fuel that is still a valuable adjunct to the national economy. In fact, its inherent low sulfur content may make it an important fuel of the future. Estimates indicate there are reserves of anthracite to last for 300 years at a consumption rate of 50,000,000 tons/year. Anthracite Preparation Yesterday A 170-year history of the anthracite industry obviously is not the purpose of this discussion. A complete history of anthracite preparation, the rather unglamorous step in the processing of "mine run" hard coal to make it suitable for the user, is also not practical. Hence, the purpose of this report is to trace the development of some of the most important processes used through the years to meet a part of the demand for energy developed by our modern society. Anthracite preparation in the early days of the industry consisted solely of separating slate from the coal, by hand, underground (Z). This method prevailed for almost 20 years until wrought iron hand rakes were introduced to separate the large and small sizes. Shortly thereafter, the first attempts were made to size and clean the coal aboveground. The coal was dumped on a perforated cast iron plate, and men used sledge hammers to break the larger pieces into smaller sizes suitable for the market. The smallest sizes--that is, the material that went through the plate--were thrown away because they had no value at that time--a concept that existed for many years and actually was the basis for the subsequent "river" coal production and the many silt banks which are landmarks in the anthracite region. The larger sizes, at that time, sold for 50 cents per ton. The Batten breaker, or roll crusher, was invented in 1844, followed soon thereafter by the Snell-Diehm breaker (A). The latter had disadvantages, including excessive waste and fixed product size, but it later was improved in these respects. A breaker was also developed at Minersville, Pa., at about the same time that processed 200 tons of coal per day, using roll crushers and circular screens (1). Handpicking, from the beginning of anthracite preparation, was an important part of the cleaning process and was still being practiced as late as 1950. It was this process that involved the "breaker" boys of coal region lore. How much good handpicking accomplished depended on how much impurity was present in the coal--the more the impurities, the greater the reduction in ash. Thus, high-impurity streams were significantly improved, whereas picking of relatively clean coal was mainly to show an effort to make a quality product. As indicated, picking is largely a visual operation. It was and is wasteful of coal in the larger sizes since some good coal is always associated with the bad. However, it was probably much more effective' in the larger than the smaller sizes.

This paper stems from research and development in sensor and sorting technologies towards future sustainable mining undertaken by the UBC Mine-Mill Integration group in collaboration with MineSense Ltd. Sensors and sensor-based technologies such as ore telemetry and sorting are envisioned to be a significant component in achieving such ‘invisible’ future sustainable mining. Such technologies offer high flexibility and power in use: delivering valuable information from the very preliminary stages of mining exploration through to final upgrading of the ore preceding the fine comminution stages. This paper reviews sensors and sorting as enabling technologies towards a future smart mining operation and introduces a model in which sensor-based exploration (down-the-hole sensing), ore exploitation (smart-shovels), transportation (smart-conveyors) and preconcentration (sensor-based sorters) are effectively integrated to increase the present value of operations. It is anticipated on the basis of several case studies that an effective use of sensor technologies through tomorrow’s ‘smart mine model’ should lead to several positive impacts ranging from increased mining production, to reductions in transport costs, overall energy use and waste generation. In this way sensors can be used to maximise the profitability and present value of the mining operation from the exploration stage through to mine closure.

Crude Minnesota taconite was charged in the Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace so that smelting characteristics of such highly siliceous raw materials could be studied and smelting costs compared with those of a standard Mesabi ore. The Bureau recognized that the highly siliceous nature of the crude ore and its relatively low metallic content would be serious economic deterrents to commercial use of the raw taconite, but compensating factors would be low capital investment in production facilities, large tonnage available on short notice, high recoveries of iron, and low delivered cost. Crude taconite smelted readily in the experimental blast furnace. Coke consumption per ton of metallic product was very high, compared with the average established requirements for smelting normal grades of metalliferous raw materials. Slag rates were also inordinately high. Metal quality was erratic as to silicon, and sulfur contents were objectionably high.

Blasting operations can use a bulk emulsion explosive (EE) with a formulation based on used oil as a replacement for refined fuel oil. The most commonly employed used oil for making EE is a mineral based used engine oil that passes an impurity content standard. It is known that not all types of used oil are easily incorporated into EE formulations. Impurities in used oil can disturb EE stability resulting in crystallization and phase separation and consequently led to poor detonation quality. In 2024, a poor blast result occurred at an Indonesian mine due to utilization of used oil that was not within specification. A research project conducted from February to April 2025 found that used transmission oil differs from used engine oil in hydrocarbon composition. Transmission oil contains more additives that affect EE stability due to polarity differences and the disruption of colloidal state stability. Lab tests including stress testing and crystal growth observation aided the development of a stable EE formulation based on used oil and used transmission oil. In mid-April 2025, blast evaluations were conducted using the EE that was formulated using used engine oil and used transmission oil. Measurements of velocity of detonation, fragmentation, and digging time, demonstrated high quality EE was produced. Application of used oil in EE revolutionized the capability of mining operations to improve blast sustainability and cleanliness. Through comprehensive research, robust testing, and effective supply chain management, it is possible to replace some portion of refined fuel oil with used oil without compromising blasting performance. The inclusion of used transmission oil broadens the overall used oil specification and increases the volume of recycled used oil available for blasting. Despite the recent pullback in metal and mineral prices, and the associated market adjustments, the mining industry is still facing a serious issue with the declining availability of graduate expertise. This is due to a combination of an aging workforce, retirements and retrenchments, coupled with a lack of suitably qualified graduates entering the workforce. The issue has certainly improved since 2004 when the industry picked up the rates of hiring graduate engineers and mining/mineral school enrollments picked up in response. This hiring effort has helped to cover the ?gap? years from about 1985-2000, when industry demand for graduates was particularly poor. However, the recent market pullback is likely to set back this progress, as recruitment and hiring wavers as a result of cost cutting measures and economic uncertainty. A key issue for the mining industry is how to ensure the survival and growth of relevant ?core? degree programs. Such programs include mining, metallurgical, mineral processing and geological engineering. The mining industry needs a healthy, high-level education program to ensure an adequate supply of appropriately qualified graduates for the mining industry. Two-thirds of the professionals entering the minerals industry who graduated within the past 40 years graduated prior to 1985. Since 1985, we have been living off the legacy of graduation classes from the mid-1970s and early 1980s. It is estimated that we have been producing graduates at approximately 40 to 50 percent of the sustaining rate since about 1985. Further growth in the domestic industry would increase graduate requirements significantly, and the export of U.S.-graduates to other parts of the world (as is currently occurring) also impacts the total graduate requirements.

It is believed that many of the problems encountered in the operation of gold cyanidation plants are difficult to resolve due to the lack of sufficient and reliable in-formation regarding the variations and actual values of operating variables at any given time. The application of instruments to monitor the more important variables in the cyanidation process should result in more efficient plant operation and a better understanding of the process. The use of pH and conductivity sensing devices for alkalinity measurements, a monitor to determine the dissolved oxygen content of plant solutions, a continuous cyanide titrator and sonic control of grinding circuits are discussed. Although the discussion is oriented toward the cyanide process, much of the paper is applicable to other ore treatment operations.

"Environmental control structures for an existing fossil-fuel power generating plant near Pascagoula, Mississippi faced several design and construction challenges due to space limitations. Conceptual design calculations indicated drilled shaft foundations would likely be needed to accommodate the higher lateral and compressive loads expected under some structures. A maximum drilled shaft diameter of 60-in was preferred due to various space constraints. Smaller diameter drilled shafts were deemed acceptable under structures with more moderate loading conditions. Furthermore, augercast piles were considered where lateral loading was not a governing design criterion.A series of SPT borings and CPT soundings revealed a subsurface profile consisting of soft to firm clays to depths of about 25 feet, underlain by fine to coarse sands. The apparent relative density of the sands was loose just below the clay, with increasing density noted with an increase in depth.Analysis of conventional drilled shafts indicated needed capacities could not be achieved unless shaft lengths exceeded 100 feet. Post-grouted drilled shafts were therefore evaluated to decrease shaft lengths by taking advantage of increased base capacity. Analyses showed the higher predicted capacities needed for some structures could be achieved with this approach. Final design for the project incorporated 90-ft long, 60-in diameter post-grouted drilled shafts; 60-ft long, 48-in diameter post-grouted drilled shafts; and 60-ft long, 48-in diameter conventional shafts. Both post-grouted and conventional trial shafts were installed as part of the detailed design phase of the project. Each trial shaft included CSL integrity testing and Osterberg-cell bi-directional load testing. Load test results revealed that additional base capacity was, in fact, achieved through the post grouting process. The 60-in diameter post-grouted production shafts and the 48-in diameter conventional production shafts have been installed at the site, with the project that would utilize the 48-in diameter post-grouted shafts deferred at this time."
