Electricity, as normally thought of by a layman's definition, is a manmade force that has no color, no odor, is not visible, cannot be heard, yet man can control it and make it perform his work for him. A person dare not cheat on it, for it then will master him. It has laws, rules, and regulations that must be strictly adhered to if it is to perform in the safest, most reliable, and economical manner. In the early days of coal mining the power source was man himself. Later man employed steam and compressed air to reduce his muscle power requirements needed in the extraction of coal. By the turn of the 20th century, electricity had become the most common source of power for the coal industry. Steam and compressed air are still found in use in isolated cases today for specific applications; however, they are rapidly being replaced by electricity. Electrical laws and regulations are quite extensive and somewhat complex for the proper generation and use of electricity. Man-made laws, rules, and regulations for the care and handling of electricity, designed for man's safety, are rigidly enforced by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, as well as the various state departments of mines. BACKGROUND Until recent years most underground coal mines used direct current exclusively for all movable and for some stationary equipment. Exceptions were for permanent pumps, tipple, fan, and outside buildings where alternating current was normally employed. However, over 60 years ago there were mines with dual systems. Alternating current was used for cutting machines, drills, and pumps, direct current for locomotives. There were no other machines as these were hand-loading mines. A recent Nevada Gold Mines research program focused on the pressure oxidation (POx) pretreatment of a Carlin-type double refractory ore from the Turquoise Ridge Mine. The research team found that both arsenian pyrite and carbonaceous matter were highly oxidized within an hour at 300 °C using a bench-top autoclave reactor and that the gold recovery from the residues after cyanide/carbon-in-leach (CIL) approached the technical limit set by the amount of gold encapsulated by silicate minerals. Although the 60-min pretreatment at 300 °C yields robust performance when treating a whole ore, copper additives can catalyze the oxidation rate of carbonaceous matter and reduce the residence time needed at elevated temperatures. Certain gangue minerals are susceptible to dissolution in acidic solutions at 300 °C, and this may cause poor gold recovery. This recovery challenge is mitigated by keeping free acid in the discharge solution below a key threshold.

During coal mine operations, roadways may be located close to faults. When designing these roadways, it is important to determine the width of the rock mass between a roadway and a fault area to prevent water inrush. In this paper, the Xintian Coal Mine in the northern Guizhou Province of China is selected as a typical case. Through numerical simulation based on orthogonal tests, range analysis, and multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis, the process of water inrush from faults in excavation roadways is studied. The results show that the influencing factors of the safe width of a rock mass preventing water inrush (RMPWI) can be ranked according to the degree of influence from large to small as follows: the hydraulic pressure of the fault, the surrounding rock grade, the overburden depth of the roadway, the cross-section height, and the dip angle of the fault. Among them, the dip angle of the fault, the cross-section height, and the surrounding rock grade are negatively correlated with the safe width, while hydraulic pressure of fault and overburden depth of roadway are positively correlated with safety width. The predicted value for the safe width based on MLR is greater than the measured value of the width of the RMPWI when water inrush occurs, but less than the calculated value based on the empirical formula in the standard, which proves the accuracy and practicability of the prediction method. This research provides a certain basis and reference for the prevention and control of water inrushes in mines.

A 1/20 scale experimental dozer push test rig was designed and constructed to quantify the expected production rates (loose cubic meters per hour) for dozers operating in hard-rock bulk push applications. The particle size distribution of the material employed in the test rig was modeled on a fragmented muckpile representative of that for a typical surface copper/gold mine overburden. Buckingham Pi theory was applied to mathematically develop factors for scaling up dozer productivity parameters, including blade loads and push times. Dozer production rates were investigated for various dozing distances and slope angles. A series of instantaneous productivity curves were produced which are applicable for use in hard-rock dozer push operations. The productivity curves produced demonstrate that dozer productivity declines rapidly over the range of 10 to 40 m.

The freezing and subsequent solidifying of unstable, weak (sands, silts and clays) and/or wet soil to form a desired-shape frozen barrier around a construction area are possibly the main features of the freezing method for shaft sinking. The barrier, along with strengthening the soil, provides a dry environment to ensure sustainable subsurface construction work before placing a permanent lining. The freezing method requires the installation of freezing pipes in boreholes around the construction area and the circulation of chilled salt water through these pipes and has long been a proven technique for dry shaft sinking through unstable and water-bearing seam around the world. As removing heat from the ground is the main feature of the method, an efficient thermal design of the freezing process is mandatory to ensure success of the shaft sinking operation. This applies to both the sustainability and economy of the intended structure. The design presented in this paper is aimed at figuring out the heat-removing ability and operating time of the refrigerative equipment using some simple formulae. The authors adopted a theoretical approach to determine the quantity of heat to be removed from the ground. The amount of energy for the equipment was found to be greater than that for freezing, which proved the validity of the design. The active freezing period was calculated to be 121 days. The authors followed the structural design of the freezing process they proposed in their previous work (Farazi and Quamruzzaman, 2013). Though the first coal seam in the coalfield was encountered at a depth of approximately 352 m in the subsurface, the target depth for cooling and freezing was decided to be 162 m. The formation demands extra care to nullify its risk of the temporary structure collapsing and water rushing in (Farazi et al., 2012). Discussion on the determination of refrigerative equipment parameters was excluded from the scope of this work.

Ammonia leaching of copper sulfide concentrates, matte, scrap or other sources of copper yields copper amnine sulfate solutions which are converted to metal in a two-stage process involving precipitation of inter- mediate sulfites and their thermal decomposition to copper powder of high purity. Processing details and results are given. Considerable simplification in circuitry and cost savings are indicated. Energy requirements are reduced by substitution of copper powder precipitation and ammonium sulfate crystallization for solvent extraction, electrowinning and lime boil.

The underwater concrete technology has historically evolved largely through a trial-and-error process of constructing marine works. Many outstanding examples exist of high quality concrete placed underwater. However, failures also occurred and led to excessive cost and/or schedule overruns. These failures were largely due to improper concrete mix design or improper placement. The problems may have occurred because proper underwater concrete construction techniques and experience have not been widely disseminated. This section focuses on technical issues of underwater concrete mix design, concrete production and placement, and quality control.

GENERAL GEOLOGY OF THE LAKE SUPERIOR IRON-BEARING AND COPPER-BEARING SERIES. THE geology of the Lake Superior region is of general interest, both from an economic and a scientific standpoint. The presence of large and rich iron- and copper-deposits has made a knowledge of the geology of the region necessary for purposes of exploitation and exploration. The ores of the region are contained in rocks of pre-Cambrian age, 'pith for most of the country up to recent years have usually been referred to as « crystalline schists " or " crystalline complex;" and regarded principally as metamorphosed basement-unit upon which the sedimentary rocks, beginning with the Paleozoic, were laid down. In the Lake Superior re¬gion this pre-Cambrian complex presents an unusual variety of rocks with determinable relations. It has been possible, with the large expenditures which-the magnitude of the iron-mining industry warrants, to work out their stratigraphy to a larger extent than has been possible in almost any other area of pre-Cambrian rocks. The real complexity of Lake Superior geology, the confusion of names and the multiplicity of reports covering small parts of the region, are such that interested persons, other than. geologists directly engaged in the work, may well hesitate to attempt to comprehend the geology of the region as a whole. The following paper is a somewhat elementary outline of the geology of the Lake Superior region with special reference to new developments not yet covered in published reports. Geological information concerning the region has been gath¬ered by mining companies, and by the geological surveys of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ontario, Canada, and the United States.. Perhaps in no other part of the country have the mining men themselves spent such large sums in purely geological work. This has made possible the publication of ,reports and maps by the State and Government surveys in much less time and at far less cost than would have been otherwise possible. The. U. S. The current design standards for the use of anchors in slopes is based on two-dimensional (2D) limit equilibrium analyses. Anchors are considered as discrete loads and the 2D anchor, factored based on the spacing distance, corresponds to extending anchors indefinitely in the third dimension. A three-dimensional (3D) analysis offers a more realistic representation of the problem, including the true discrete nature of the anchor point loads. This paper explores the typical differences between analyzing anchors in 2D and 3D, using four typical conceptual models. Slopes with constant cross sections were shown to be adequately represented by the traditional 2D approach. The maximum difference between 2D and 3D models was 21% and becomes negligible for lower anchor spacing values, as expected. A slope with an external load was analyzed to evaluate critical slip surfaces with lower aspect ratios. Slip surfaces with lower aspect ratios presented higher edge effects that contributed to the stability of the slope. The results indicate that optimum design requires the 3D evaluation of field conditions inducing low aspect ratios, such as concave and convex surfaces, weak layers, and external loads. INTRODUCTION Slopes may be stabilized using a variety of solutions, including anchors. When performing an analysis, geotechnical engineers often follow the traditional two-dimensional (2D), Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM). It is important to understand the consequences and limitations of the assumptions on which the 2D LEM is based. There are numerous studies on anchors that show the importance of considering the actual three-dimensional field conditions. Desai et al. (1986) proposed a three-dimensional procedure based on the Finite Element Method and considering elastoplastic behavior and interface elements, to account for stress and displacement distributions, the relative motion between the anchors and the soil mass, and nonlinear soil behavior. Several important stabilization mechanisms were explained. The role of grout injection was evaluated in terms of the produced normal stresses along the anchor-soil bounding surface. The approach was shown to reproduce adequately experimental tests on a sand, proving realistic stress distributions around the anchor. Nonlinear soil behavior influenced to a large extend relative interface motions. Michalowski (1989) applied an upper-bound limit analysis in 3D to slope stability analyses. Anchors were not specifically considered in this study, but the consideration of locally loaded conditions shed light on important modeling aspects. The manner how the slide mechanism becomes three- dimensional as the slope is locally loaded was demonstrated. This emphasizes the fact that anchors should produce field conditions that require 3D analysis approaches.

"ON NOVEMBER 15th, 1950, the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys announced the discovery of vermiculite near Perth, Ontario. The announcement followed nearly a month of study to determine so far as possible the potentialities of the deposit and quality of the material from surface indications. The mineral was identified by the writer in the field among samples submitted by Mr. Arthur Powers of Stanleyville or, September 22nd, 1950. Within a week of the announcement, mining rights to properties covering a major portion of the deposit had been acquired by commercial interests.Hitherto, Canada has had to import her entire requirements of vermiculite. Prospects of .a domestic supply gave promise of considerable benefit to many industries, particularly the building industry, and to the consumer public. Should the deposit •prove large enough there was also the possibility of exporting to centres in the United States.Field and laboratory studies were continued at the Mines Branch during the winter of 1950-51 as opportunity occurred. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the results of these •preliminary investigations, to attempt to present the Stanleyville occurrence in its proper perspective with regard to similar occurrences elsewhere, and to review the salient features of the vermiculite industry.Properties and UsesVermiculite is a hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. In appearance it resembles mica, having the same micaceous cleavage, but it differs from that mineral in being very soft, pliable, and inelastic. Colours range from black through dark olive-green and brown to almost colourless."

The current interest in sulfur recovery from coal measures is indicated by a recent report prepared for the Public Health Service (1) It was noted that the concentration of pyrites to a product containing 42-48 percent sulfur should be relatively easy with present equipment. It was also pointed out that a utility potential exists for the high-grade iron concentrate which results as a by-product of the consumption of pyrites in the acid-making process. However, economics, marketing characteristics, location, transportation, pyrite levels and coal characteristics all strongly influence the feasibility of fostering industrial development of such processes. The extent of pyrite recovery and product quality is intimately related to pyrite particle size and its degree of liberation, a consideration usually given greater emphasis in metal ore preparation than in processing coals. Consequently, fine crushing to nearly 20 mesh probably will be essential for maximum practical processing. It appears that any process separating pyrites from a coal must involve a reprocessing of the normal preparation plant refuse, although some yields can be attained from certain existing operations as products from, a shaking table or a jig. Further, the existence of millions of tons of coal refuse cannot be ignored as a mined source of raw materials. The recovery of saleable products from such wastes, although untried on a large scale under current conditions, not only offers a realistic source of sulfur but also would achieve a secondary refuse with the minimal contents of substances which incite and propagate the burning of organic and inorganic combustibles. These silicate materials, thus beneficiated, also offer some potential for economic utilization. Some significant tonnages of pyrites have been produced from coal measures in the past, but the experience was, in general, not consistent with current coal preparation practice. The processes involved did not include cyclones and heavy media; nor were they carries out under the sociological environment concerned with pollution as exists today.

The global coal industry has changed significantly in recent years. In this paper we analyse the coal production and consumption, imports and exports, and coal prices in China and other major coal-producing countries during the past four decades. The analysis shows that global coal production and consumption have declined over the last three years, in striking contrast to the continuous growth for most of the past 35 years. Australia, Indonesia, and Russia have become the world’s major coal providers, while China, India, and the USA, and Germany are the major coal consumers. The world’s, and China‘s, coal industry can be classified into four stages of development: the stable growth phase, stable phase, rapid growth phase, and high-quality phase. Coal prices rose in the world’s four major coal markets in 2016 after four consecutive years of falling prices. The elimination of overcapacity and production-optimizing operations in China could assist in achieving a demand and supply balance.

"Samples from seven test wells distributed throughout the surface-mineable area of the Athabasca Oil Sands have been evaluated to determine the amounts of heavy minerals present and the titanium and zirconium contents. The samples were treated to yield the size distribution of the titanium and zirconium minerals as well as their spatial distribution. The study has shown that heavy minerals are found throughout the surface-mineable area; concentrations range from 0.24 to 2.29 per cent (by weight), with a mean of 1.02 per cent. Titanium and zirconium contents vary throughout the area, and are found preferentially in the finer size fractions. •on the basis of preliminary calculations, the tailings streams from an oil sands plant would provide sufficient feed for a large-scale titanium pigment plant, and the tailings from one plant would provide sufficient zircon feed to satisfy Canadian demand for. metallic zirconium. Variability of the heavy mineral content and composition is such that the heavy mineral potential must be evaluated in detail for each mine site."

"One of the major issues that the Rare Earth Elements Mining Industry has to deal with is the legislation vacuum that exists in many countries around the world. Among these, are countries which have long history and tradition in mining. In many cases the lack of direct legislation for REE mine management as well as for other potentially polluting industries can be a barrier to sustainable development. Moreover, the case of lax legislation in China has led to environmental pollution problems and extended smuggling of rare earth elements. This paper looks into the current regulatory status on the mining of REEs, identifies the loopholes and suggests some elements for a new global legislation framework for sustainable development in the REE mining industry. The setting of this regulatory framework will be in line with the present and future challenges of the rare earths market as well as with the policy strategies that are defined internationally. The aim of such a legislative framework will be to strengthen the global rare earth elements supply chain, appease social concerns and ensure the preservation and conservation of the environment. INTRODUCTION The general public received their first introduction to rare earth elements (REEs) in 2010, when the previously inconspicuous commodities became the subjects of front-page headlines. It was when China created a furore in global high-tech markets after imposing an embargo on Japan following a minor marine dispute (Barakos et al. 2015b). Soon enough the Chinese embargo was extended on REE export restrictions all over the world and thus aroused concerns to many countries over potential supply disruptions. The world had suddenly realized that these wonder materials underpin products that they care about. Governmental and industry executives, policymakers and material scientists voiced concerns and conducted numerous reports stating the situation and the risks of a supply crisis. The price spike of 2011 intensified the crisis and the public turmoil, yet the drama did not last for long as the prices declined significantly in 2012. Nevertheless, the world was nonplussed by the fact that China has the total control of the market with more or less the 90% of the global production. More potential entrants became interested, thus initiating an exploration boom during the recent years that has resulted in a significant increase in known global REE reserves that could have potentials for exploitation."

"Oxidation of pyrrhotite prcxiuces sulphuric acid which in turn leaches out heavy metals, resulting in acidic contaminated seepages. The establishment of a marsh on top of the pyrrhotite would result in an anaerobic sediment, which should prevent further oxidation of the pyrrhotite. Initial data indicates that concentrations of sulphates and heavy metals in the seepage water are greatly reduced. As the pH decreases, heavy metals become more soluble resulting in contaminated seepages to ground and surface waters.By creating a marshland on top of the pyrrhotite, an anaerobic intermediate layer should form between the organic covering and the tailings, preventing the oxidation process from progressing.In September 1986, Falconbridge Limited implemented a tailing reclamation project that involved creating a marshland on top of pyrrhotite tailings. The following paper will discuss and illustrate the preliminary results obtained during the sampling period of May to September 1987."

"One of the most essential problems associated with the treatment of EAF dust is its high content of halogens. For most thermal processes for zinc recovery, such as the plasma processes with a zinc condenser, the halides in the gas stream will form a dross phase that results in a low zinc yield. For those with zinc oxide as main product, such as Waelz oxides, the high halogen content in the product implies a great degradation of the product quality and the product can only be sold at a low price. Further processing of zinc oxide with high halogen content either by pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical processes will also result in process problems.This paper will review the pre- and post-treatment alternatives for halogen removal based on the comprehensive characterization work that has been carried out at MEFOS and the preliminary experimental results.The experimental results show that chlorine and fluorine content could be reduced to 450 ppm and 50 ppm respectively by selective sulfation, and to about 200 ppm by soda leaching. Selective sulfation of zinc oxide in the EAF dust will also be discussed."

Approximately 1.5 million tonnes of ammonium nitrate are transported annually across Queensland, Australia—equivalent to nearly 100 truckloads per day. This is in the form of both AN prill and ammonium nitrate based emulsions (ANE). In a recent incident, a collision involving an ANE tanker resulted in a detonation that caused extensive blast-related damage and led to the closure of a major highway. Had this event occurred within a populated area, the consequences would have been catastrophic. For over a century, investigations into the causes of such spontaneous detonations have been inconclusive. A recently completed industry supported research project has made a pivotal discovery: a surface reaction mechanism leading to hydrogen generation has been identified as a precursor to detonation. If sufficient hydrogen accumulates and subsequently ignites, it can release enough energy to initiate the detonation of bulk ammonium nitrate and ANE. Controlled experiments conducted during the project successfully demonstrated hydrogen-driven detonation events. Previous work by Proulx and Scovira, presented at the 2000 ISEE Conference, described spontaneous detonations in hot, reactive ground and the mitigating effects of buffered emulsions and ANFO. Building upon their observations, this study reproduces similar incidents under laboratory conditions, confirming that hydrogen generation also results from reactive ground interactions. Importantly, the findings challenge traditional assumptions, demonstrating that ammonium nitrate and ANE detonation in reactive environments does not require an ignition temperature threshold, confinement, or a classical chemical decomposition pathway.

"Abstract - The Louvicourt Au-Ag-Cu-Zn-Pb sulfide deposit is hosted by a Middle Ordovician calc-alkaline sequence of aphyric rhyolite flows and associated fragmental rocks at the top of the Flat Landing Brook Formation. The Zr/TiO2 (average = 0.110) and Y/TiO2 (average = 0.021) ratios in the footwall felsic volcanic rocks are consistent with known values for the Reids Brook member. The deposit consists of two concordant lenses of semi-massive to massive sulfides, approximately 150 m long and up to 9 m thick, which represent a fold repetition of a single exhalative horizon. The deposit contains a geologic resource of 136 000 tonnes grading 1.2% Pb, 1.0% Zn, 0.4% Cu, 90.9 g/t Ag, and 0.96 g/t Au; the deposit locally contains elevated Au (2.9 ppm) and Ag (320 ppm) contents. A laterally continuous iron formation that contains barite caps the deposit, and is gradational vertically and laterally into laminated siltstone. The exhalite confirms the stratiform nature of this deposit, but a large percentage of sulfides occur as late replacements of altered felsic fragmental rocks in the footwall. Abundant examples of colloform pyrite and perlitic and spherulitic textures in volcanic clasts are well preserved. The base- and precious-metal content of the Louvicourt deposit is atypical of the Bathurst Mining Camp (BMC). Reported assay data (n = 27) indicate an average Pb/Zn ratio of 2.6, the highest in the BMC (average = 0.39). Lead exhibits a strong Spearman Rank correlation (r' = 0.92) with base metals throughout the sequence, indicating a preponderance of galena in both the stockwork and stratiform zones. The Ag and Au contents in this deposit are among the highest in the BMC and exhibit a Au-Ag- Cu-Pb association. Barite-rich exhalative pyrite exhibits a moderate Au correlation with Ag (r' = 0.77; n = 10) and Cu (r' = 0.76) and occurs in portions of the exhalative sulfides that are enriched in Pb. Chemical exhalative rocks are conformably overlain by trachy-andesitic volcaniclastic (possibly pyroclastic) rocks that are assigned to the Little River Formation. These are enriched in Nb (average = 38.4 ppm) and P2O5 (average = 0.17 wt.%), and have much lower Zr/TiO2 (average = 0.056) and Y/TiO2 (average = 0.0062) relative to rocks higher in the hanging wall. The intermediate volcanic rocks are conformably overlain by massive to pillowed basalt flows and related hyaloclastite that have Nb/Y = 0.60 and high TiO2 contents (average = 2.8 wt.%). This chemistry is consistent with rocks of the Brunswick Mines member (Little River Formation), except that these rocks are considerably enriched in P2O5 (average = 0.82 wt.%). This syngenetic exhalative deposit is unique for the BMC with a high Pb/Zn and elevated Au and Ag contents, as well as an epithermal signature (Sb-Ag-Au-Tl-Hg), analogous to high sulfidation volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Its intimate relationship with an emergent felsic dome (Flat Landing Brook Formation), chlorite-silicate-oxide-sulfide exhalite (locally hematitic), and the abundance of barite are classical features of many of the Kuroko deposits."

The use of differences in specific gravity between minerals to separate them has long been utilized in the extractive industries. The environmental and cost benefits of the commercialized forms of these processes are well understood and widely used. Gravity concentration is used inter alia in the primary beneficiation of gold, diamonds, coal, tin, ferrous metal ores and andalusite. The potential for economic loss due to poor performance of these gravity processes is significant, but diverse in manifestation and regular process monitoring can prevent or at least reduce these losses. The measurement of performance of gravity processes has always presented a challenge, due primarily to the masses of material involved and the physical nature of the processes, generally typified by long reporting time, and hazardous materials (such as Tetrabromoethane) for float and sink type tests. The development of density tracers has improved this situation, however recovery of these tracers from the process streams created the next set of challenges, requiring significant manpower to physically remove tracers from product dewatering screens. Additions to these tracers (magnetic or x-ray fluorescent) eased the recovery mechanism issues but made them much more expensive to produce, hence operators became concerned about losses during process testing. In addition, magnetic recovery of smaller size tracers by a magnet suspended above a loaded screen panel is still problematic. The development of new low cost magnetic tracers has improved statistical significance of tracer tests, as the tracers themselves can be bought and used in much larger quantities, whilst still remaining economically viable. Coupled with the development of effective magnetic recovery technology, such as the Gekko MagScreen, for even fine sized tracers, on-line, continuous tracer testing is now becoming a reality. Whilst the development of high technology radio frequency detection tracer systems continues, enabling the real time measurement of the process and interpretation of results, miniaturization and recovery of these tracers, which is critical given their costs at present, remains an issue. Rare earth elements have important strategic significance and economic value, and the rare earth elements in coal resources have considerable development potential. This study took coal refuse in the Jungar area of Inner Mongolia, China, as the research object, and investigated the occurrence modes of rare earth elements. A special sequential chemical extraction experiment was designed, and the results showed that the rare earth elements in coal refuse mainly occur in silicate and aluminosilicate form, accounting for approximately 65% of the total rare earth elements. According to the results of SEM-EDS, micro morphology of the sample belonged to the lamellar structure of clay minerals, and Al, Si, Fe, S, Y, and La were all present in the sample. Through SPSS software analysis, rare earth elements have an obvious linear positive correlation with Al, Si, and Fe elements, and a negative correlation with S elements. The rare-earth element occurrence mode in coal refuse can provide a definite theoretical basis for the later extraction and enrichment work.
