Jet grouting was first introduced into North America in the late 1970's, soon after the conception of the system in Japan. However, it was not until the mid-1980's that the technique began to gain acceptance through the renewed interest and efforts of specialist U.S. geotechnical contractors. Since this time, innovations by both American users and other users worldwide have further advanced the technology, with a corresponding increase in the range of practical applications. This paper discusses the evolution of jet grouting in North America, from simple single-fluid methods to more complex triple-fluid methods, to the energy-intensive double-fluid and SuperJet methods. Case histories, illustrating a variety of jet grouting methods and applications, are cited to support the newest United States applications.

"This is an extended abstract for a keynote lecture delivered by the author during the 2015 ISRM congress in Montreal on the application of the numerical discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) method in rock mechanics practice. Due to the large scope of the topic this lecture will focus on studies performed by the rock mechanics group at Ben-Gurion University, alone or in collaboration which other research groups, and is not intended to provide a comprehensive review of everything that has been done on the subject worldwide during the past two decades. A forthcoming textbook (Hatzor et al., in preparation) will attempt to provide such comprehensive coverage.DDA has been developed by Dr. Gen-hua Shi while he was doing his PhD studies under the supervision of Professor R. E. Goodman at U. C. Berkeley (Shi, 1988). Dr. Shi has invented a new numerical discrete element method which provides a solution for dynamic deformation of block systems, hence its applicability to rock mechanics practice. The method is similar in essence to the finite element method in its implicit formulation of the time integration scheme and where in every time step the minimum potential energy of the entire system is sought, but here every element is a finite block with six degrees of freedom. The blocks are assumed to be stiff (simply deformable) so that most of the energy is consumed by slip along pre-existing discontinuities, the frictional resistance of which is assumed to obey the Coulomb-Mohr failure criterion for rock joints. The greatest advantage of DDA over alternative numerical discrete element methods is its robust area (volume) integration which ensures great accuracy even when the blocks are of irregular shapes, including non-convex blocks which may contain holes. The greatest disadvantage is the necessity to solve in every time step very large matrices of unknowns, imposing great CPU demand when the block system involves a large number of blocks. Another disadvantage is the sensitivity of the solution to the choice of the penalty parameter which is implemented in DDA in the form of stiff springs that are attached to contacts once detected automatically.The inherently dynamic formulation of the DDA method lends itself to solution of dynamic problems in rock mechanics. Dynamic analysis with DDA can be performed in different ways corresponding to different rock mechanics problems and loading conditions. Three main classes of loading conditions which are relevant to rock mechanics applications are discussed here: 1) dynamic loading of a single bock which rests on a stationary foundation, 2) response of a block to dynamic loading of the foundations, 3) wave propagation through a block system.The most common approach is to introduce the dynamic force to a specific block in an otherwise fixed block system and check the resulting deformation, typically the time dependent displacement or rotation of the loaded block. This approach is particularly useful for dynamic rock slope stability studies when a stability of a specific rock block against earthquake vibrations is in question. The first 2D-DDA benchmark test of this approach was performed by Hatzor and Feintuch (2001) who introduced harmonic acceleration functions into a block which rests on an inclined plane. The analytical solution proposed for this problem by Hatzor and Feintuch (2001) was later generalized by Kamai and Hatzor (2008). The first 3D-DDA benchmarking for this approach was presented by Bakun-Mazor et al. (2012) who studied single and double face sliding of blocks which rest on stationary foundations and subjected to harmonic input acceleration functions."

Determining the mechanical properties of rocks is important for various civil engineering fields, including the mining of raw materials for aggregates used in the construction and paving industries. Traditionally, the mechanical properties of rocks are obtained through in situ and laboratory tests during geotechnical surveys. However, these time-consuming surveys involve many resources. In contrast, hyperspectral remote sensing methods make it possible to identify the mineralogical composition and crystallographic structure of the rock; properties that control the mechanical properties of the rocks. In this work, we characterise the mechanical properties of carbonate rocks by using a hyperspectral sensor in laboratory conditions. We collected about 150 cylindrical samples of carbonate rock, with a wide range of strength values from several rock outcrops in Israel. We used a point spectrometer in the range of 0.4–2.5 μm and a spectral image sensor in the range of 3.0–12.0 μm, scanning the samples to obtain the signature of their light reflections and spectral emissivity. We then measured the samples’ density, porosity, water absorption, and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). We used sophisticated data mining to find statistical relationships between the hyperspectral signatures of the samples and their mechanical properties. We used this data to identify the most dominant wavelengths for predicting mechanical properties. We found that the density, porosity, and water absorption of carbonate rocks could be confidently predicted based on spectroscopy data, while the UCS of the rock could also be predicted, but less significantly. The results of the study pave the way for the development of measuring tools for the mechanical properties of rock, based on non-destructive tests of quarrying materials.

AT present the Federal Government represents the only organization applying geophysical methods of prospecting in Brazil. The geophysical work of the National Department of Mineral Production, which will be described in the following pages, must be considered as a program of experimental work designed to demonstrate the applicability of the more or less "standard" methods of geophysical prospecting to various problems of economic interest in Brazil by means of practical examples of results obtained in certain typical areas. Our work is somewhat similar to that of the Imperial Geophysical Experimental Survey of Australia, but our task has been greatly simplified by the ever increasing number of technical publications relative to the theory of instruments and methods.

Open stoping has become a popular mining method in hard rock mines, not only due to the safety of the method as a non-entry approach, but also because of the high extraction rate and low costs. At mine sites, stope performance is evaluated by calculating stope overbreak using the stability chart. However, limitations of the stability chart regarding the precision of the predictions, nonconsideration of factors such as the influence of blasting, and the exclusion of underbreak have led to non-optimal designs. The capabilities of today's computers have increased the amount of data being collected and the power of models being built. This article presents a step towards a new stope design approach where stope overbreak and underbreak are measured and georeferenced using octrees at an approximately cubic metre resolution and predicted using multivariate statistical models (partial least square, linear discriminant analysis, and random forest). Results show that overbreak and underbreak location along the design surface and their magnitude are predicted with good precision using a random forest model. These predictions are used to build the expected geometry of the open stope. The resolution of the data and the use of multivariate analysis has enabled the prediction of variation in stope performance along the design surface, going well beyond the simple qualitative per stope face prediction provided by a traditional stability chart approach.

THE 131st meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held in New York on Feb. 16 to 20, 1925, with the largest registration of any previous meeting, the total being 1320 compared to 1276 in 1924. The technical sessions were more largely attended and aroused more discussion than ever before. There were joint meetings with the Mining Section of the National Safety Council, under the auspices of the Industrial Relations Committee of the Institute and two very important lectures, the Howe Memorial Lecture, under the auspices of the Iron and Steel Committee, and the lecture by Dr. Carl Benedicks, of Sweden, on Corrosion, under the auspices of the Institute of Metals Division. The Petroleum Division conducted its annual Symposium on Oil which will be published later in book form. At the annual business meeting on Feb. 17, the following ticket was elected, and the reports of the President, Treasurer, and Secretary 'were presented:

Large volumes of slags, with varying mineralogical and geochemical characteristics, are produced annually by the ferrous and nonferrous metallurgical industry. Most of them are considered as potential secondary resources and may be valorized, following the principles of circular economy, for the recovery of critical elements, including energy transition metals. Apart from the economic benefits, valorization of slags may contribute to the competitiveness of the metal industry and the conservation of natural resources. Valorization also results in minimization of environmental impacts on soils and waters in slag disposal areas, due to the prevention of solubilization and subsequent migration of potentially hazardous elements. The present study utilizes ferronickel (FeNi) slag for the production of alkali-activated materials. The effects of the main experimental parameters, including sodium hydroxide (NaOH) molarity, silica/sodium oxide (SiO2 /Na2O) molar ratio in the activating solution, precuring and curing time, curing temperature and aging period on several properties of the final products, are assessed.

"Investigations of the infrared spectra of crystalline and amorphous silica particles of different sizes (0.05, 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, and 260 um) in the range of 400-4000 cm-1 using Fourier transform infrared/photoacoustic spectroscopy we reported. The change in the intensity I of the signal with porosity e of powders follows the e/(1 - e) dependence for strong bands and e dependence for weaker bands as pre¬dicted by the theory of McGovern of al. For strong bands, I also follows the empirical relation I ~ D-n, where D Is the particle diameter in cm and n = 0.34-0.42. The anomalous positive frequency dependence of I on the modulation fre¬quency f observed for the stronger bands in the 45-pm and 260-pm particles Is believed to result from saturation. Some observations on the effect of changing the background from (carbon black) powder to pellet are also made.INTRODUCTIONSince the publication of the Rosencwaig—Gersho (RG) theory on the photoacoustic effect in solids (1, 2), Fourier transform infrared/photoacoustic spectroscopy (FTIR/PAS) has become an important technique for obtaining the IR spectra of surfaces and materials in their natural state (1-12). In the one-dimensional RG theory, the incident radiation, modulated at frequency f, is absorbed by the material to a depth pp = 1/B (B = absorption coefficient), thus setting up temperature variations in the material. These variations heat the adjacent gas/solid interface leading to the pressure fluctuations of the gas above the sample, which in turn is detected by microphone as a PA signal. The thermal wave originating from no deeper than the thermal diffusion length(2k/npcf) 1/2 in the material contributes to the PA signal (here k, p, and c are respectively the thermal conductivity, density, and specific heat of the material). Since u2, can be varied by varying the experimental parameter f, depth pro¬filing by PAS is possible and a number of papers on this subject have appeared in recent years (2-10). Another im¬portant phenomenon is saturation which occurs when the material thickness 1> u> us (1-12).The original promise of PAS for use with powder samples, without the need to ""prepare"" samples as in FTIR spectros-copy, has not yet been fully realized because of several com¬plications. Theoretical works by Monchalin et al. (13) and McGovern et al (14) showed that the interstial gas in the voids of the powders can act as amplifier and that, for the same mass, a finer powder is expected to yield higher PA signal than a coarser powder. Although in a number of earlier studies (15-21) an increase of PA signal with decreasing particle size has been observed, a quantitative check on the equations developed by McGovern et al. (14) has not yet been made. It is necessary to understand the particle size effects in PAS if the promise of PAS for IR spectroscopy of powders is to be realized. In this paper, we report results of a detailed study on the PAS of silica powders for the particle size range of 0.05-260 um and compare the results with theory (14). We have also investigated the frequency dependence of the variousIR modes in these powders and show that the saturation phenomenon affects at least some of the observations. Some observations on the effects of pellet vs powder background are also reported (22-24). Details of these findings are presented and discussed in this paper."

Power cable costs are only a small part of total mining costs. So many mine operators consider power cable failure and resultant downtime as part of the cost of doing business. But, viewed in terms of lost production, these costs can be quite significant. Now one company, Cablec, seeks to cut cable costs by upgrading the polymer compounding process used to make cable insulating and semiconducting materials. Cablec is the leading manufacturer of electrical power cables in North America. And with about a third of the market, Cablec is the largest supplier of power cable to the mining industry in the United States. To improve its products, Cable has entered the polymer compounding business. In July, it began producing insulator and semiconductor polymer compounds at its plant in Indianapolis, IN. "This new facility provides a quantum leap over conventional compounding methods," said Harry C. Schell, Cablec's president and chief executive officer. "The Cablec polymers plant is producing a dramatically higher standard of polymer compounds that provide significantly higher levels of performance and improved life cycle costs for power cable." Cablec faces tough foreign competition in the wire and cable business. Competing on price alone is difficult, particularly when foreign producers are state subsidized. So Cablec feels the best way to compete is to establish new quality production standards. The company's new polymers plant is one way to do this. By increasing purity control and uniformity in polymer compounding, Cablec says its power cables will last longer and fail less often. A typical medium voltage cable consists of a conductor, conductor shield, insulation, insulation shield, metal shield, and jacket. The conductor shield and the insulation shield are conducting polymers. Contaminants and imperfections can occur within the insulation, at the conductor shield/insulation interface, or at the insulation shield/ insulation interface. Over time, these contaminants and imperfections can decrease the electrical strength of the cable or cause premature cable failure. The effort to minimize the number and size of any possible contaminants begins with pure polymer compounds mixed in a clean facility. However, most power cable manufacturers manually handle raw materials, use ethylene/propylene (EP) in bulk bales, and mix polymercompounds in open Banbury mixers. The quality and uniformity of polymer compounds is also impacted by temperature variations in the mixing process. This results in wide gradations of product consistency from batch to batch and ultimately contributes to power cable failure. Cablec says the improved polymer compounds from its state-of-the-art plant will be the purest and most consistent insulating and semiconducting materials available. The plant itself RCA spent $18 million to build Cablec's Indianapolis plant. RCA used the facility to mix specialty polymer compounds used to make video disks. RCA had two considerations in mind for the plant, cleanliness and uniformity of the compounds. However, when the video disk market failed to materialize, RCA sold the 46.5 dam 2 (50,000 sq ft) plant to Cablec for $3.1 million. Cablec invested an additional $3 million for modifications and increased production capabilities. Today's replacement cost for such a facility is estimated at $30 million. Cablec says the plant will set a new standard for performance and be economically difficult to duplicate anywhere. One of the essential elements of the plant's clean process environment is the air intake system. It filters contaminants greater than 2 um, less than one-fiftieth the current industry standard. All material handling and conveying areas in the facility are air-locked. This keeps out contaminants such as smoke, dust, and pollen. Banks of pneumatic pumps move polymer components through the system and continually filter the air. The plant also has a backup air intake system. No process downtime due to pump failure here. From the time raw material enters the plant, it is stored, transported, and processed in filtered air by an airtight stainless steel system. The stainless steel resists rust and corrosion. This further eliminates the danger of contamination from paint or rust particles in the conveyance network. After the closure of collieries, they naturally start to fill up with water. As a result, hydraulic gradients develop between them and different hydraulic pressures are exerted onto peripheral areas or compartments within mines. This results in water flow between mines, or onto the surface. This flow is referred to as intermine flow. The collieries in the Witbank Coalfield have geometries such that there are several areas where this intermine flow is possible. Since the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry has declared intermine flow as one of its greatest concerns for granting closure to South African mines, much research into this phenomenon is required. The challenges in determining intermine flow are numerous, and attention has focused on identification of areas where these flows can take place. The quantification of these flows is problematic due to the uncertainties in exact geometric configurations and the variation in site-specific hydraulic properties of thecoal and overlying lithilogical layers. During this study, use has been made of numerical flow modelling and several analytic solutions to test the applicability of the flow models as well as to predict groundwater flow directions, filling times of voids and flow volumes. The numerical modelling methodology entailed a downscaling approach starting with a broad regional model covering the entire area, followed by modelling the interactions between interconnected mines, and finally looking in detail at the major areas of interaction.

"Unidirectionally reinforced light weight compounds based on light metals such as the aluminium alloy EN A W-6082 are adequate materials for the future use in transportation means like automobiles and airplanes. Due to the occurring cyclic loads knowledge about the crack growth behaviour of such composites is needed. The investigations at a load ratio of R = 0.18 show that the crack growth rate of the aluminium matrix is reduced if reinforced by spring steel wire with a reinforcing ratio of only about 1 Vol.-%. Additionally, the acoustic emission analysis allows detecting crack growth within the matrix material, crack propagation along the interface wire/matrix and crack closure which could also be determined with the help of a self designed capacitive displacement measuring gauge. The damage behaviour could be verified by metallographic and SEM investigations.IntroductionIn the field of lightweight structures for transportation means the need for light, strong and stiff materials, in particular composite materials, is increasing in order to save resources and costs. Lightweight materials such as aluminium and magnesium alloys are highly efficient candidates to be used in the composite extrusion process [1] which allows for a simple production of unidirectionally reinforced profiles with a large diversity of geometries at low costs. Figure 1 depicts the principle of the composite extrusion process; within the first part of the tool the billet material is split into several strands whereas the middle part of the tool allows the supply of the reinforcing elements. The third part of the tool rejoins the matrix material and the reinforcing elements and defines the final shape of the profile."

The quality of metallic materials depends on their composition and structure and these are determined by various physico-chemical and technological factors. To effectively prepare materials with required composition, structure and properties it is necessary to carry out a research in two parallel directions: Comprehensive analysis of thermodynamics, kinetics and mechanisms of the processes taking place at the solid-liquid-gaseous phase interface during welding processes and development of mathematical models of the specific welding technologies. We have developed unique method of mathematical modeling of phase interaction at high temperatures. This method allows us to build models taking into account the thermodynamic characteristics of the processes, the influence of the initial composition and temperature on the equilibrium state of the reactions, the kinetics of heterogeneous processes, the influence of the temperature, composition, hydrodynamic and thermal factors on the velocity of the chemical and diffusion processes. The model can be implemented in the optimization of various technological processes in welding, surfacing, casting as well as in manufacturing of steels and non-ferrous alloys, materials refining, alloying with special additives, removing of non-metallic inclusions.

Significant advances in longwall mining technology and equipment have occurred over the last decade by the late 1990s, longwall mine output accounted for 40% of all underground output in the U.S. and today longwall mines account for approximately 50% of coal produced underground in the United states. A 51% increase in average shift production rates has occurred over the last 15 years. this increased longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced and controlling respirable coal dust presents an ongoing challenge for coal mine operators the National Institute for Occupational safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a series of benchmark surveys at longwall operations across the country to identify current operating practices and the types of controls being used. Gravimetric and instantaneous dust sampling was completed to quantify the dust levels generated by major sources on the longwall section and to identify different control technologies in use today substantial reductions in dust levels were realized at sampling locations on the face when compared with ongwall surveys conducted in the 1990s results from the underground dust surveys and current longwall dust control technology and operating practices will be discussed. "Columnar jointed basalt (CJB), which typically originates from lava flows, is characterized by a special geological structure. The joint network inside the CJB is self-organized into a rough hexagonal arrangement. The field test and measurement during the unloading excavation showed that the columnar joint sets and other internal joint sets not only are important for determining the mechanical properties of the CJB, but also induced its asymmetric unloading deformation and failure. A constitutive model, which considered mechanical deterioration of both the joint sets and rock blocks, was also developed to simulate the unloading behaviour of the CJB. The crack-confinement supporting method for surrounding CJB was developed to overcome the failure of columnar jointed rock mass in the diversion tunnel. Application to the CJB segments of the diversion tunnels in the Baihetan project indicated that this supporting method was reasonable and efficient. INTRODUCTIONColumnar jointed basalt (CJB) rock mass, which typically originates from lava flow, is characterized by a special joint structure. The joint network of the CJB is self-organized into a roughly hexagonal arrangement and leaves behind an ordered colonnade. The widely accepted current view regarding the formation of columnar jointing involves a thermally induced contraction–cooling mechanism (Peck and Minakami, 1968; Degraff and Aydin, 1987; Budkewitsch and Robin, 1994; Lore et al., 2000; Goehring et al., 2006). Although the columnar basalt formation mechanism is fairly understood, the geotechnical characteristics of such rock mass are not well established. In practice, joint sets always induce the multi- failure modes of surrounding rock in the tunneling space (Ibarra et al., 1996; Waltham and Swift, 2004; Mahendra and Bhawani, 2008).According to conventional wisdom in rock mechanics, structural joints affect the mechanical response of rock mass by introducing strong anisotropic effects (Barton and Bandis, 1980; Hudson and Priest, 1983; Brady and Brown, 1985). The columnar jointed rock mass should be considered an anisotropic material given that the joint sets are distributed with some principal directions and characteristic spacing distributions (Cundall and Fairhurst, 1987; Hoek et al., 1998; Wu and Wang, 2001; Budetta and Nappi, 2011; Fortsakis et al.,2012). Columnar jointed rock mass would result in structurally controlled failure patterns, even serious disasters during underground excavation because of the low shear and tensile strengths of intensely joints (Gencer,1985 ;Ishida and Uchita, 2000; Jia and Tang, 2008). The CJB rock mass in the Baihetan hydropower station has exhibited serious stability issues, including sliding, fracturing and even collapse (Shi et al.,2008). Therefore, the geotechnical and geomechanical characteristics of such rock mass should be assessed through in situ investigation and numerical analysis to minimize future accidents during underground unloading excavation."

Education is for the purpose of developing citizenship, and, if it is pursued for the additional purpose of preparing for a professional career, such as engineering, it is also directed to developing a knowledge of essential science, aptitude for the application of science to practical situations, and a knowledge of the industrial art in which the engineer will be engaged. The process of education required for engineering must of necessity extend beyond the classroom into industry. For that reason, the education of engineers should be divided as between the university and industry. Specialization in engineering should logically come as a result of experience in an industry. The student cannot take the time in a university, and, the university cannot teach the skills required to develop a specialist without sacrifice to the more essential broad purposes of formal education. In addition to talent in science, aptitude in the application of scientific fact, and knowledge of the industrial art, the engineer should possess certain personal qualities which are helpful in the pursuit of a professional career. Those personal qualities are: the ability to work as a partner in an enterprise, the ability to do jobs in a way whereby job performance is a means of gaining experience and increased responsibility, the capacity to write and speak in an understandable manner, and, a Proper regard for the "significance of answers." These pcrsOnal qualities may be of almost equal importance to acabemic accomplishments in the field of science. Development of such personal qualities are an essential part of the student's training in the university and in industry. They can be developed effectively through the leadership of instructors. Compulsory Education Nature played a mean trick On the human race when the evolutionary Process failed to develop in the individual a capacity to inherit knowledge. Were knowledge transmissible in a cumulative manner from generation to generation, mankind would be by inheritance wise beyond measure within a few generations. Then there would be little if any need for a "system of education." As matters stand, however, all must suffer the burden of starting life at the "zero " level of learning from which station each rises depending upon individual capacity to assimilate knowledge left of record by our predecessors and the individual effort exerted to compensate for Nature's failure to endow the offspring with intelligence. In the United States some degree of education is generally regarded as essential and necessary. Therefore, all citizens are subjected by law to an educational process covering the primary school age from six to sixteen years. Beyond the schooling required by law, many attend secondary schools, and beyond that, schools of higher learning. Our standard of living is at a level that permits an increasingly large fraction of the population the opportunity to go through all of the formal educational process. Waste of coal, or perhaps more properly the percentage of its recovery in mining, has keenly interested me during an experience of over a half century in coal mining. In the early part of that time and until a few years after World War I the use of better mining plans and supervision resulted in an increased recovery. Since then, and particularly since controlled prices have been effective and mechanized mining has been extensively practiced, the tendency has all been toward lesser recovery in mining. The purpose of this paper is not to criticize the methods being used, which after all are the result of economic forces, nor to point to any particular mining method or to any locality where the best recovery is obtained, but to call attention to the tremendous waste of our national coal resources that is constantly continuing. A possible method of reducing this loss will be suggested, but without any illusions that it will be followed or that such attention will be paid to it. Average Recovery The actual average percentage of recovery of coal in the ground is not known. As an example, the Pittsburgh bed can be considered—it has produced a greater output than any other and has been sold or leased at higher prices in place than any other coal bed. Over a large part of its area where high prices have prevailed it has been customary for many years to draw pillars. In these mines it has been usually assumed that the average recovery was higher than in other beds and percentages of recovery of 85 to 95 per cent are usually said to be realized. In all of these mines, however, it has been customary to leave from 4 to 8 in. in the bottom, and 10 to 16 in. in the roof; thus from 14 to 24 in. of coal has been left in the mines out of a total seam thickness of about 96 in., or 15 to 25 per cent of the total coal. No attempt is made to mine this coal for metallurgical purposes, owing to its impurities, although this unmined coal is of excellent quality and better than much of the coal used for steam purposes. If we add to this discard the coal usually lost in mining and those parts of the bed 'that must be left because of bad seam conditions, barrier pillars, reservations for buildings, gas and oil wells, one can easily see that the actual recovery from this bed cannot be more than 65 to 75 per cent. In addition, the rooster or rider or wild coal over the mining bed—often 3 to 4 ft. of coal, high in ash and sulphur but still good steam coal—is hardly ever mined, nor is any attempt made to mine it. It is safe to say that from a broad economic viewpoint not more than 50 to 60 per cent of the fuel value of this great seam is actually being recovered.

The International Labor Organization has declared mandatory adequate provision of safe workplace and safety for all workers in all occupations including the mining sector. Early scientists like Agricola (1559) who studied the health of Miners, found that there are peculiar health problems associated to their work and working environment. This unsafe working condition was one of the major factors that resulted to the Industrial revolution in England and eventually led to the establishment of regulations and laws guiding operations in all workplaces and workers in England and all over the world. Recent studies by Heinrich suggested chains of events of safety issues in the mining sector. Occupational injuries, accidents and ill health have huge social and economic implications on workers, their families and communities. Top mining top issues are respiratory diseases, noise, explosives, ventilation, fire, and explosion. However, one of the principal mechanisms for achieving Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) goals and mapping the future is government regulations of employers. In Nigeria, the situation is not different; mining operations are equally hazardous and have far reaching implications. In 1995 the Ministry for Solid Minerals was established to focus on the development of other categories of mineral products ranging from gold, coal, uranium, and tantalum deposited across the country. Prior to this an Act of Parliament Act Cap 121 of 1946, was in place to regulate amongst other contents mining safety. This was subsequently reviewed following the incidence of Lead poisoning resulting from small scale miners processing gold ore highly contaminated with lead in Zamfara state (northern Nigeria). Hundreds of children died as a result of exposure to lead poisoning, it was clear that the regulations were not sufficient (details to be discussed). However, advances have been achieved in mining engineering since then. A review team was constituted to provide a more stringent law to regulate mining operations in Nigeria. The strategies for mapping the future of OHS in mining engineering will employ amongst others setting and adopting ISO/ILO standards and enforcement; providing technical assistance; and establishing sustainable developmental structures as surveillance and compensation. The management systems approach was also developed as a result of cases of accidents. The accepted international standards guidelines and requirements will be proposed. Furthermore in mapping the future for Mining Engineering, it is suggested that most countries have their own management strategies and legislation to improve safety of workers through greater consistency and efficiency of OHS programs. Some American researchers came up with the Safety Engineering Model. The Australian Mining Council of mineral and petroleum resources after the Catastrophic Maura Disaster developed the National Mine and Safety Framework. In Canada, after the Hillcrest mine disaster in 1914, Allan shaft coal mine catastrophe in 1918, Westray mine explosion in 1992 and other disasters, Occupational Health and Safety Act R.R.O 1990 was sufficiently developed to provide adequate safety conditions and standards. In Nigeria after the disastrous Zamfara lead poisoning, which claimed the lives of hundreds of children due to exposure and lack of appropriate safety measures, stringent measures were developed by the federal ministry of Justice to address and regulate mining process in Nigeria.
