"Numerical simulation of electromagnetic confinement systems generally requires large CPU time due to the strong coupling between the electromagnetic and the free boundary problems. The present paper examines the accuracy and the computational efficiency of the most common numerical schemes used in modeling such systems. Levitation melting was taken as a test case. In this study, a comparison was made between the finite element and surface integral methods for electromagnetic field calculations. The computational efficiency of Lagrange and the modified Hestenes methods for solving the free boundary problem were investigated. The convergence of the Lagrange method was found to be much faster than the modified Hestenes method. It was also found that finite element method not only gives accurate solutions, but faster convergence to the final equilibrium shape than the surface integral method. The applications and the limitations of these techniques in modeling electromagnetic confinement systems will be discussed.IntroductionIn recent years there has been a growing interest in the use of electromagnetic forces for confinement of molten metals as a means to eliminate molten metal contamination during melting and to improve surface quality of cast products. Continuous casting of metal without contact of a mold is now a reality, and is being commercially applied for casting of aluminum slabs /1/, and copper rods /2/. New applications of electromagnetic confinement in melting and casting include containerless melting (Magnetic Suspension Melting) /3/, edge containment in twin roll casting, and meniscus shape control in continuous casting of steel /4/.Modeling of confinement systems involves the determination of the electromagnetic field and the equilibrium shape. These two problems are strongly coupled due to the dependence of the field on the shape of the melt. While significant advances have been made in computational electromagnetics /5/, the application of developed computational techniques to electromagnetic confinement problems is not a simple task. The principal difficulty in using these methods is that the solution domain is not known a priori. due to coupling between the electromagnetic field and the free boundary problems. These two problems have to be solved simultaneously, leading to an iterative solution procedure. As a result, numerical simulation of electromagnetic confinement systems are computationally intensive with computational time at least an order of magnitude larger than the fixed domain problems."

While the use of synthetic polymers for solid/liquid separation is not raw technology (1)(its history goes back to the mid 1950's), its importance has increased dramatically over the past decade. This can be attributed to two major factors. The first of these was a change to mechanized mining (strip mining and continuous underground miners) which resulted in a lower quality (higher reject) preparation plant feed, as well as a higher percentage of smaller size particles in the feed. The second factor has been the greater restrictions imposed by governmental agencies on effluent discharge and solids impoundment, requiring pre-treatment of recirculating water before reuse and treatment of refuse before disposal. Today, synthetic polymers find utility in almost all applications requiring separation of solids from aqueous suspension, including "in-process" as well as waste treatment applications. In spite of the fact that there are over several hundred commercially different flocculants available in the marketplace (2), there are a limited number of chemically different materials available which are useful from a cost/performance standpoint. The potential reasons for using flocculants in a coal preparation plant are summarized in TABLE 1.

The mining industry is guaranteed an important future because its products are indispensable. However, this can be anything from a brilliant, efficient, profitable future to one of being a heavy-handed, dull-witted claimant for public handouts, according to the caliber and training of the young men who enter the industry. Many views have been expressed about the type of education needed for today's mining industry. Criticisms have been aired to the point that further controversy amongst ourselves could be detrimental to both mining education and the mining industry. It is time we get together and start going somewhere. To canvass the various attitudes of mining educators, a questionnaire was sent to a group of these dedicated, intelligent men, whose primary interest is to help the industry and the profession. The following is a summary of their views.

This paper describes the results of testwork for the treatment of Ambatovy laterite by an acid pressure leach process, with recovery of the soluble nickel and cobalt values as mixed sulphide intermediate by precipitation with hydrogen sulphide, and subsequent refining of the mixed sulphide to nickel and cobalt metals. These process development studies were carried out primarily in 2004, as part of a bankable feasibility study for the Ambatovy Nickel Project.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THROUGH wide experience at numerous mills in the United States I have found that there is a decided difference of opinion among the producers of steel as to what constitutes commercially sound steel. Some metallurgists insist upon having, for certain grades of steel, a so-called "open steel," -i.e., one which contains numerous blowholes of varying sizes, and consequently but little volume of true pipe, although a central intermittent shrinkage cavity often extends well down into the ingot: Such blowholes and pipe are expected to weld up during rolling or forging, because their surfaces are not oxidized. Even if this be admitted, included slag particles and a high degree of segregation are bound to be present in the product of such ingots. Blowholes are the result of an oxidized heat, and all heats, unless made or finished in the electric furnace, are oxidized more or less. Subsequent deoxidation, or rather degasification, either in the ladle or in the mold, or in both, is necessary to reduce or prevent blowholes. As is well known, a greater yield of billets or sheets is secured from the ingot by allowing the formation of blowholes, but this is undoubtedly obtained at the expense of the quality of the product. Decided segregation of carbon, phosphorus, and sulphur, as well as small included slag particles, undoubtedly exists throughout the greater portion of all so-called open steel, and cannot be removed by cropping. The first requisite for sound, homogeneous steel ingots and blooms is therefore, in my opinion, so to treat the steel in the furnace, ladle, and mold that "piping" steel is produced. The line of demarcation between harmful and so-called "harmless" blowholes is practically impossible to define. Is it not, therefore, the better and safer practice to use means for the elimination of blowholes and correspondingly reduce the segregation and allow the formation of a well-defined shrinkage cavity or pipe .at the upper end of the ingot? Mining of a bedded barite deposit exposed highly pyritic siliceous sediments which have weathered and degraded subsurface and surface waters. The ph, sulfate, and total dissolved solids are the most seriously affected parameters. Several solutions were tried and eventually horizontal holes were drilled into the mine wall to draw down the water table and decrease the movement of groundwater through oxidizing zones opened up by the mining operation. Areas of surface disturbance were capped with layers of soil, bentonite, and gravel to decrease the infiltration of water into the disturbed areas. These actions have begun to decrease sulfate and total dissolved solids concentrations and increase ph values.

Oxidation/reduction (REDOX) alloy media, as used in wastewater treatment, is founded on the exchange of electrons. Because of this electron exchange, many contaminants are converted to harmless components which require no further treatment. Other types of contaminants are removed from the waste stream by electrochemically bonding to the alloy medium. This paper discusses the REDOX reactions, the role of the alloy medium in various treatment processes, and describes specific applications of REDOX alloy media for the removal and minimization of waste. The characteristics and handling of spent treatment media is also reviewed as a further consideration in waste minimization.

"The Port Radium leaching plant of Eldorado Mining and Refining, Limited, produces 450 t./d. of sulphuric acid leach liquor containing l. 73 g. /I. U 308. After solvent extraction, the waste solution is discarded at 0.002 g./l. U30s for a recovery of 99.8 to 99.9 per cent. The solvent is acidified with weak sulphuric acid, loaded to 4.5 g./l. U80:1 in three-stage extraction, scrubbed with water, and stripped with soda-ash solution in single-stage stripping. Caustic removes the UaOs from the pregnant strip solution as a precipitate. The slurry is filtered, re-pulped with water, and re-filtered. The pressed precipitate at 81 to 82 per cent equivalent U30s is dried and packaged. The carbon-ate filtrate is cooled to remove sodium sulphate build-up and carbonated to convert excess caustic. Reagent consumptions are 4.1, 0.22, and 0.39 pounds per 1,000 gallons of pregnant solution for Diesel oil, amine, and alcohol, respectively. Caustic consumption averages 1.3 to 1.4 pounds per pound U3O8.Extraction and stripping is accomplished in sheet-iron mixer-settlers lined with Phenoline. Piping on both circuits is Schedule 80 polyvinyl chloride. Valves are straightway Buna N lined with American Hycar diaphagms. Extensive instrumentation ensures good metallurgy with a minimum of variations and labour. Mixing in a continuous organic medium and careful acidity control are required to minimize third-phase formations. Heating the precipitate slurry is conducive to good filtering in Perrin presses with neoprene-coated, rolled-steel sectors. Sodium sulphate is crystallized from carbonate filtrate solution by batchwise cooling to 54°F. with lake water."

The removal of lead by fire refining methods from copper of electrolytic quality is growing in importance. Particularly is this true of the refining of secondary copper and copper cathodes obtained from electrolytic cells where lead is used as the anode material, as in the electrolysis of ore-leaching solutions and foul electrolyte. When investigating the removal of small amounts of lead from molten copper in a reverberatory furnace during the refining of secondary copper of otherwise electrolytic copper quality,' it was found necessary first to know something about the distribution of the lead throughout the bath. The authors believe that it is not generally known how small amounts of lead as an impurity are distributed in a molten copper bath; that is, whether the lead is concentrated at the bottom or at the top, or whether it occurs more or less uniformly throughout the bath. The data contained in this report may help, therefore, in the development of a satisfactory fire refining method for the removal of this obstinate element from a molten copper bath. The first step was the development of a method for taking samples from various locations in the bath, at the surface and at various depths. The sampling device used, shown in Fig. 1, consisted of a 10-gram fireclay assay crucible fitted into a ring on the end of a steel rod handle of suitable length. "Microwave induced cracks have the potential to enhance metal recovery from coarse sphalerite particles in heap leaching operations by creating new crack surface areas for lixiviant and enhancing value mineral exposure. The mode of fracture and the extent of mineral exposure due to microwave induced cracks have not yet been investigated. The objective of this study was to determine the extent of particle damage and mineral exposure in microwave treated particles. This was done using X-ray computed tomography (XCT) and image analysis techniques. XCT analysis was conducted on small (–5+4.75 mm), medium (–16+9.5 mm), and large (–25+19 mm) sphalerite ore particles before and after microwave treatment (MT). Geometrical properties, such as volume and surface area of each mineral phase in each particle was determined from the XCT reconstructed images using VGStudioMax image analysis software. These geometrical properties were used to calculate the interfacial areas of sulphide mineral grains in microwave treated particles before and after MT. The ratio of specific interfacial area after MT to specific interfacial area before treatment was used as an indicator of the degree of preferential grain boundary fracture. The results showed significant grain boundary fracture after MT at all sizes. For small sized particles, about 31% of the interfacial area was lost compared to 23 and 16% for medium and large particles, respectively. The results also showed an increase in the degree of mineral grain exposure of 28, 26, and 15% for small, medium, and large particles, respectively, after MT. These results provide experimental evidence supporting improved mineral exposure due to MT. INTRODUCTIONFor some years it has been suggested that microwave treatment (MT) of ores might result in preferential grain boundary fracture that would have benefits such as improved grain exposure and particle weakening. (Kingman, 2006). Most of the experimental work investigating the application of microwaves to mineral processing flow sheets has focused on assessing the benefits of applying microwave technology to flow sheets consisting of size reduction and mechanical flotation cells (Kingman et al., 2004). Experimental studies have shown that coarse crushing during tertiary grinding of microwave treated ore resulted in a better liberated coarser flotation feed (Scott, Bradshaw, & Eksteen, 2008). It has been suggested that improved liberation in milled flotation feed, was due to the presence of grain boundary fracture in microwave treated particles. However, this improvement in coarse particle liberation does not necessarily translate to a significant improvement in downstream flotation recovery (Kobusheshe, 2010). This is as a result of the size limit to the flotation of coarse material, due to detachment forces acting on particle-bubble aggregates, which increase as the particle size increases (Jameson, 2012). Current conventional, mechanically agitated flotation cells are not designed to float coarse material (Jameson, 2012). Hence it has been difficult to show the downstream processing benefits of applying microwaves to ores processed by comminution followed by flotation (Kobusheshe, 2010). It is clear from investigations carried out so far that inappropriate downstream exploitation of microwave treated ore would fail to realise a meaningful process benefit (Kobusheshe, 2010; Ali & Bradshaw, 2011)."

"Gas injection to promote chemical reactions or mixing is a feature of many metallurgical processes. Often the aim of gas injection is to bring about a chemical reaction between the gas and liquid but most of the past physical and mathematical modelling work has ignored the influence of such reactions. In the work reported here, cold model studies have been conducted in which gas reacts with the liquid into which it was injected. The rate of liquid mixing has been measured as an indication of the mechanical energy transfer. It has been found that gas generated chemically within the liquid is significantly less effective at promoting mixing than the equivalent volume of inert gas. The relative ineffectiveness of chemically produced gas is thought to be due to smaller bubble sizes in comparison to the inert gas case. Small bubbles characteristic of chemically generated gas move with low slip velocities relative to the liquid and lead to different turbulence generation mechanisms.IntroductionIn processes such as steelmaking, copper conversion, bath smelting and ladle steel finishing gas is injected into liquid metal where it reacts chemically or simply serves as a source of agitation. An understanding of fluid flow phenomena in such situations is an essential pre-requisite to the calculation of process intensity and the optimisation of vessel productivity. Traditional physical cold modelling approaches to prediction of liquid flow in such situations are now often augmented by the techniques of computational fluid dynamics. Even with the availability of numerical modelling techniques cold physical models continue to have an important role for validation because it is generally difficult to obtain quantitative data from high temperature processes.Almost all previous cold modelling work has been based on the injection of an inert gas into water or some other non-reactive liquid. Such models do not include the significant increase in gas volume inherent in some processes. This manual provides instructions for installling, operating, and maintaining protective canopies on the Joy Mfg. Co. cutter. These instructions are based upon two actual installations: one made in a mine and one in the factory. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopies are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other cutters with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions herein would be applicable to the other cutters and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.

Extensive use is made of a small scale computer (IBM 1130), in the calculations of ore reserves for Western Mining Corporation's nickel mine at Kambalda, W.A. All surface drilling data such as assays, density and location information, are stored on disk files at the Company's Technical Computing Centre at Perth, W.A. The computer is used to search through the data, select significant ore intersections, calculate the area of influence of each intersection and perform the necessary calculations to arrive at an estimate of the ore reserve. Geogrids can be used as surface control on both the roof and rib in underground mines to prevent the fall of small pieces of rock and material from between the primary supports. The use of screen material such as geogrid can significantly reduce the number of ground fall injuries caused by these small rock falls. Because of the potential for reducing injuries through the use of screen, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted tests on screen materials including geogrid to determine their support characteristics and identify parameters that can affect their performance with respect to maintaining broken or failed rock. A specially designed test frame installed in the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) has been used to evaluate the load and stiffness characteristics of the screen material. Two types of geogrids with various designs have been tested-a polyester yarn and a polypropylene grid. The load-displacement characteristics of these grids were determined and the load capacity and stiffness were calculated through 20in of displacement. The load capacity and stiffness of the geogrid in general are shown to be related to the ultimate tensile strength of the screen material.

The The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) is continuing to investigate the behavior of fully grouted roof bolts in the weak roof rock of the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM). This paper describes the results of three studies: • A series of 24 pull tests of bolts installed fully grouted and overcored to leave 12 inches of grouted bolt. The tests compared the pull-out performance of offset-head roof bolts with that of standard 5/8-inch bolts; • A second series of 24 tests that compared the pull-out loads obtained by bolts installed with 1 ft of resin (a Short Encapsulation Pull Test or SEPT) to that of fully grouted bolts overcored to leave only 12 inches of grouted bolt, and; • An investigation into the pressures generated during the installation of fully grouted resin bolts. All of the bolts installed and pulled were overcored and removed from the roof after the pull tests to allow inspection of the resin. The first study found that there was no significant difference in pullout load between the offset-head bolts and the standard bolts. The second study, comparing the SEPT bolts and the partially-overcored fully grouted bolts, indicated that SEPT can significantly underestimate bolt anchorage grip factor, suggesting that the SEPT is a conservative measure of actual bolt performance. Significant loss of resin to cracks in the roof was observed in the bolts overcored in the SRCM. The third study explored one possible explanation for the resin loss, high pressures generated during bolt installation. These tests employed bolts installed in strain gauged steel tubes. The results confirmed that significant pressures (greater than 4,000 psi) can be generated during bolt installation. The results of the pressure tests, combined with the observations of resin loss in bolts installed in the SRCM, suggest that under some circumstances resin loss and under-encapsulation could take place and lead to degraded bolt performance. Glove fingering was observed in all recovered bolts to various degrees. The limited comparative data suggested that the effect of glove fingering ranged from slight to moderate. Complete mixing of the resin was observed on all of the 40 bolts recovered (28 fully grouted and 12 SEPT). Australian and U.S. resins were compared and the Australian resins were observed to have much smaller catalyst compartment areas and lower resin viscosities. These differences are suggested as potential explanations for occasional resin mixing problems noted in Australian resin bolt installations.

This paper is for mine managers. It is about maintenance of mining equipment. This is an extremely broad subject so this paper is given with the caveat that it necessarily contains generalisations, not true in all cases, but broadly correct. The job of mine managers is to be good at making money from the excavation and preliminary treatment of mineral. To do this well, they need to understand the cost and value drivers in the business. This includes understanding the drivers associated with maintenance. Maintenance is often identified as a problem at mine sites. It is frequently listed as the cause of production shortfalls when reporting. The state of maintenance within mining as an industry is generally among the lower end of the range, when compared to manufacturing, petrochemicals, etc. Why is this? Experience and review of many audits and evaluations of maintenance has shown that some patterns are consistent with good performance and some consistent with poor performance. These often centre around the time horizon of the management team and are associated with knowing the sensitivity of the business to certain maintenance drivers and the mechanisms of maintenance and their results. To summarise, some common misunderstandings can be listed as statements that are obvious and extrapolations from those, which are not necessarily correct. For example: High availability of equipment is necessary for production. Incorrect extrapolation:focus on availability will produce high production. Design is often the greatest factor in determining the reliability of a mining machine. Incorrect extrapolation: the newest and biggest machines generally have the lowest cost operations. Operation has an enormous impact on machine productivity and reliability. Incorrect extrapolation: the fastest operators are generally the best from a productive point of view. Some maintenance improves the performance and reliability of machines. Incorrect extrapolation: more maintenance will give you more reliability. Some maintenance depends on disassembly and reassembly of components. Incorrect extrapolation: assembly is basically the reverse process of disassembly. Maintenance improvement in the mining industry in the last 15 years has focused largely on planning and systems improvement. Incorrect extrapolation: most of the problems in maintenance can be traced to a lack of planning. Actions based on flawed extrapolations will steer a business suboptimally. It is therefore important that the mine manager understands these issues so that the improvement effort can be directed to the greatest benefit.

Mineral wool is a term applied to man-made fibers of silicate glass with useful properties resulting from their fibrous nature. In contrast with crystalline fibrous minerals such as asbestos, mineral wool fibers are amorphous, solid filaments produced by drawing from molten liquid and subsequent cooling. Chemically they are silicate glass with varying percentages of metallic oxides, especially those of aluminum, calcium, magnesium, iron, and in glass wool, sodium, potassium and boron. Other elements such as manganese, titanium, sulfur, etc., result from their presence in the raw materials used and are not purposely added. In the United States, mineral wool is a generic term and may be applied to rock, slag or glass wool. In Europe, glass silk and silicate cotton are products in the same category, but the term mineral wool is less commonly used. Current usage is to ignore the actual source and to differentiate products on a composition basis; thus rock and slag wools have about 35-45 pct of silica, while glass wool has 54 to 60 pct. Much mineral wool of slag origin is called "rock wool," and this practice is increasing, although wool made of slag from lead or copper refining is often referred to as "lead slag wool." Its greenish-gray to greenish-black dark color, due to 5-25 pct Fe (reported as FeO), distinguishes it from "white" wools made from iron, blast furnace slag containing only 1-2 pct FeO or Fe203. Most mineral wool is used for thermal insulation against heat and cold; sound absorption and isolation are probably the next most important uses. Both its thermal and acoustic values result primarily from the physical structure of the heterogeneous mixture of fibers and air which is the form in which the fibers are first obtained and handled. For this reason, within fairly wide limits, differences in chemical composition are relatively unimportant, and for most conventional applications all types are competitive in properties and value. Mineral wool intended for extreme conditions of high temperature, acid resistance and special purposes must have a chemical composition which will insure the desired properties. This may differ greatly from that of ordinary wools; for example one product approximately 98 pct Si02 and another consisting of 50 pct A1203 and 50 pct Si02 are produced and sold for high temperature service up to 2000°F or more. These are considerably more expensive to manufacture and their cost limits their use. Historical The manufacture of mineral wool consists fundamentally of a process which subjects molten material to shear and/or tensile forces that draw them into fibers. The liquids are cooled at a rate which solidifies them quickly. As a solid glass they are technically super-cooled liquids since they have no true melting point. The drawing out of glass into thin rods, filaments and tubes was known from very early times, and present day continuous production of glass filament for textiles was evolved gradually by adapting hand methods to automatic machinery. Regulatory processes associated with development of major mining operations in Alaska and British columbia were evaluated using specific case studies. Included were one hard rock mine in Alaska (Red Dog Mine), one hard rock mine In British Columbia (Snip Mine), and one offshore gold dredging project in Alaska (WestGold SIMA). Based on a comparison of the three case studies, it became clear that the primary incentives for cost effective permitting are: 1) early and continuing coordination of proposed project plans, designs and schedules with key regulatory agencies and local area residents and 2) development of a sufficient level of baseline information on air quality, water quality, wetlands, endangered species, fish and wildlife, and socia-cultural conditions to support the required permit application. The U.S. permitting process worked in much the same way as the Canadian permitting process. Disincentives of mine permitting include high initial costs for baseline data gathering. However, a relatively high early investment resulted in more efficient permit acquisition and reduced long-term monitoring requirements. A common problem Identified was the inadequate supply of trained agency personnel with the requisite technical and permitting experience. This sometimes resulted in poor decisions and unnecessary changes in project plans and schedules.

A predicted increase in aluminium production and the possibility of a diminishing supply of petroleum coke for anode electrodes in alumina reduction cells makes it desirable to find alternative electrode materials. Browncoal char, with a lower ash content and with an elemental purity similar to petroleum coke, was produced by leaching in hydrochloric acid, washing with water, and charring at 1,150°C. The cost of processing is estimated tobe competitive with petroleum coke.Without further processing the bulk density and real density were undesirably low, but by briquetting the coal before charring and crushing, the bulk density was improved to 92 per cent of the petroleum coke value andthe particle density was improved to 92 per cent of the density of petroleum coke by water displacement or 75 per cent by mercury displacement.Pre-baked electrodes were prepared from the char alone, mixtures of petroleum coke and char, and from petroleum coke alone, all bonded with coal tar pitch.The electrodes were tested for the usual physical properties and were evaluated for performance in a laboratory size alumina reduction cell.Electrodes based on brown coal char alone were found to be inferior in physical properties and performance, but mixtures of the char and petroleum coke, despite poorer density, electrical resistivity, and carbon consumptionon a theoretical basis, in performance tests gave up to 17 per cent better carbon consumption per weight of aluminium produced and 21 per cent better electrical current efficiency than the electrodes based on petroleum,coke alone.It is suggested that larger scale tests are warranted.
