The objective of this program was to develop a cost effective microprocessor-based electronic image sensor system for monitoring pit slope displacement to detect and/ or predict impending slope failure in surface mines. A background study and data analysis yielded a performance specification for candidate Video Slope Monitoring Systems. A design concept was developed based on using a pair of solid state video cameras located on precision pointing assemblies. The digital images from the cameras are compared and, using electronic triangulation, slope topology is calculated. The current and past locations of operator selected features are compared to determine pit slope displacement. A proof-of-concept test was performed using a laboratory model of a pit slope. Based on the successful results of that testing it is recommended that an in-mine evaluation be performed using a full-scale prototype Video Slope Monitoring System.

Adsorption of S02 on alumina used in the aluminium industry, so-called smelter grade alumina, was studied in the temperature range 15 C-120 C. The specific surface area of the smelter grade alumina was 88 m2/g. It was found that at temperatures lower than 40 C, sulphur dioxide is bonded to alumina reversibly by physical forces, and the adsorption can be described satisfactorily by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The heat of adsorption was estimated to be -33 kJ.mor1. At temperatures in the range 80 C- 120 C, which prevail in dry scrubbers in the aluminium industry, the heat of adsorption was determined to be -56 kJ.mor1. When S02 was adsorbed at temperatures higher than 80 C, about 30 % of the S02 could not be desorbed when heating the samples up to 250 C. In the presence of S02 and oxygen, the formation of sulphate was determined at temperatures above 90 C.

With widespread acceptance in the market place, many engineers are choosing ground improvement techniques to provide suitable foundation subgrade at sites that would have traditionally required deep foundations. This paper discusses the Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC) ground improvement technique and some case histories highlighting the use of this technique for retail development sites. CMC are a sustainable and cost-effective ground improvement technology that transmit load from the foundation to a lower bearing stratum through a composite CMC/soil matrix. The CMC installation is also an attractive option from an environmental perspective because it utilizes reverse flight augers, which displace the soil laterally. This installation technique achieves two goals: it densifies the soil around the CMC, which improves load transfer into the element and avoids spoil and its disposal. Through the introduction of two cases histories, we will present the key benefits of the CMC technology. Each case history will clearly illustrate how a CMC solution can reduce the overall cost of a project when compared to a more traditional type of deep foundations. They will also show how the use of CMCs has benefits that relate to the overall sustainability of the project. While CMCs are an attractive financial and sustainable option, they have also demonstrated that the performance of the system is comparable to that of deep pile foundations. Because CMCs are a relatively new technology many potential users are not aware of its benefits. While we discuss the use of CMCs to support buildings in this paper, CMCs also have been used for a variety of other applications including foundations for tanks, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls, and embankments

E. is well represented in the list. At our San Francisco meeting four of these will be briefly reviewed by the authors for the benefit of those who are unable to go on to Tokyo. They constitute a group dealing with the present economic status as seen by engineers of the world's iron, coal, petroleum and non-ferrous metals. Messrs. Leith, Smith and Tryon, Requa, and Probert have written papers that constitute a notable series. Messrs. Jeffries, Sweetser and Kinney, and other Institute members have written papers dealing more closely with technologic progress. The latest list of delegates and members is printed below, names of A. Change in mould slag composition during casting of medium alloy steel is caused by the redox reaction between molten steel and mould flux. Mould flux generally contains a certain amount of SiO2, but elements such as Al, Mn and Ti in high/medium alloy steels reduce SiO2 in the mould flux, causing remarkable changes in the composition of the mould slag. As a result, the properties of the mould slag change greatly as continuous casting proceeds. This causes casting instability, process abnormality and casting defects. Effect of Ti as an alloying element in steel on mould slag is studied extensively through high temperature laboratory measurements and plant measurements. TiO2 gets picked up by the mould slag up to 3 per cent during casting a steel grade containing 0.1 per cent Ti. This changes the mould slag composition and results in decreasing the slag viscosity by up to 10 per cent and decreases slag break temperature by 30–40°C.

Hydrocyclones and other dynamic separators are normally fed with pulps of water and solid particles. The particles have different sizes, shapes and densities and, except in the special case of mono-characteristic particles, are segregated into size, shape and density. Segregation is magnified by the high values of centrifugal acceleration in the hydrocyclones. This paper develops the theory of the segregation, indicates the major variables involved and reports experimental data of segregation under different operating conditions for mixtures of magnetite and/or ferrosilicon and non-magnetic minerals.

In this paper, effects of oxidation, porosity and fiber-fabric stacking sequence on flexural strength of a continuous silicon carbide fiber (SiCr) fabric-reinforced SiC ceramic-matrix composite (CFCC) were studied. The failure mechanisms were correlated with flexural strengths of CFCC samples, both before and after oxidation. Microstructures and fractography were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chemical change after oxidation, such as Si, C, and 0, and their distributions, were detected by the SEM energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) line-scan chemical analysis technique. These effects on the strength of the CFCC can be attributed to following reasons: (i) The decrease in the flexural strength after oxidation is mainly due to degradation of the strength of Nicalon fibers and the damage of fiber/matrix interface both caused by high-temperature chemical reactions, (ii) Porosity is not too important in affecting the strength of the CFCC, when the bonding of the forced flow chemical vapor infiltration (FCVI)-SiC matrix is stronger than that of the fiber/matrix interface. However, a higher porosity content will be harmful, because higher porosity will both decrease the effective elastic modulus of the FCVI-SiC and make pore-linkage easier to occur, which is more likely to cause premature failure, (iii) The variation in the lamina stacking sequence of the CFCC changes the elastic stress distributions along the thickness direction of specimens, the magnitude of ceramic matrix-cracking stress, the effective elastic moduli of the laminate, and different crack initiation sites as well as different failure modes, and thus, leading to the scatter in the flexural strength of the CFCC.

A new classification of eutectics is proposed, based on tlze entvopies of wzelting of the tuio eutectic phases. The clnssification was used to predict suitable tvansparent analogs of the metallic systems. Experimental confir?nation loas obtained for the theovetical shape of the lamellar solid-liquid interface, fov the fault mechanisms of lanzellar spacing changes, and for the development of low-energy solid-solid boundaries between the lamellae. An explanation is presented to account jov the irvegular and coinplex regular structures zrhich are found in some eritectic systems. FrOM experimental observations, single-phase materials can be divided into two groups according to their solidification characteristics, those that grow as faceted crystals and those that do not. acksonl' showed from thermodynamic reasoning that the type of growth depended on a factor a which was almost thg entropy of melting. Most nonmetals have high entropies of melting (a greater than 2) and grow with crystalline facets. Most metals have low entropies of melting (CY less than 2) and grow almost isotropically with no facets. The authors propose that eutectics may be classified in a similar manner. There are three groups of eutectics, those in which both phases have low entropies of melting, those in which one phase has a high and the other phase has a low entropy of melting, and those in which both phases have high entropies of melting. Lamellar or rodlike structures are formed in systems in which both phases have low entropies of melting. In these alloys dendrites of either phase may be formed, when the alloy is rich in the relevant component. Examples are Pb-Sn, Sn-Cd, Pb-Cd, Sn-Zn, Al-Zn. Irregular, Fig. 14((), or complex regular, Fig. 14(b), structures are formed in alloys in which one phase has a high entropy of melting and the other has a low entropy of melting. Examples are A1-Si, Zn-MgzZnll, Pb-Bi, Sn-Bi. When the alloys are rich in the low entropy of melting phase, dendrites are formed; when the alloys are rich in the high entropy of melting phase, faceted primary crystals are produced. These crystals are sometimes called hoppers or pseudodendrites. In this work the term dendrite will only be used to describe nonfaceted primary crystals. Dendrites are not formed during solidification in high entropy of melting single-phase materials. The third group of eutectics includes alloys in which both phases have high entropies of melting. Each phase grows with a faceted solid-liquid interface. Since most metals do not have high entropies of melting, metallic examples in this eutectic group are rare. However they may occur between some intermetallics and semiconductors or semimetals such as silicon, germanium, and bismuth. Attempts have been made to study eutectic solidification visually by watching the growth process.374 Since metals are not transparent, the observations had to be made on external surfaces. This difficulty can be overcome by using transparent analogs of the metallic systems. As was mentioned earlier, most single-phase compounds have entropies of melting greater than 2 and so grow as faceted crystals. Recently organic materials with entropies of melting less than 2 were investigated.' These materials grow in exactly the same way as the low entropy of melting metals. When the materials are pure, they grow with a solid-liquid interface parallel to an isotherm; when they are impure, cells or dendrites are formed. Since these materials are transparent, have low melting points, and even have cubic structures, they should be ideal for making up transparent analogs of the metallic eutectics. The purpose of the present work was to investigate these organic eutectics and to see whether this quite different series of eutectics could be classified in the same way as the metallic systems. The observations made on the organic alloys are also discussed with reference to the current theories of lamellar growth. Explanations are proposed to account for the structures formed in the other eutectic groups. EXPERIMENTAL Thin cells containing the organic alloys were uni-direction ally solidified on a specially constructed microscope stage.' Uniform growth rates were obtained by moving the cells, with a motor drive, through a fixed temperature gradient, so that the solid-liquid interface remained stationary with respect to the microscope objective lens. The cells were made by fusing two microscope cover slides 7/8 by 7/8 by 1/100 in. together on three sides, leaving a gap of 1 to 3 mils between the slides, and these were filled by surface tension. A preliminary investigation of the phase diagram between two components could be made very rapidly. One side of the cell was filled with component A and the other side with component B. Since only a small amount of mixing could occur every composition from pure A to pure B was present in the cell. When the cell was placed in the temperature gradient a pictorial representation of the phase diagram was obtained. IN spite of the war and the preoccupation of many physical metallurgists with work on secret or confidential problems, definite progress was made during 1944 in our understanding of the behavior of steel and of the effect of alloying elements. During the first two years of the war there was much concern over the possible unavailability of certain alloying elements; this period saw the development of the N.E. (National Emergency) steels. However, the measures taken eased the alloy situation and currently, highly practical problems under study are the graphitization of low-carbon steel and weld-cracking, while investigations of more theoretical interest have concerned hardenability, isothermal reactions, the effect of hydrogen and the interpretation of the notched-bar impact test.

Based on the cubic law, the hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities has the most significant effect on the hydraulic conductivity of jointed rocks. The hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities is a stress-dependant parameter and reduces with increasing applied stress. Furthermore, the rock stress increases with increasing depth. Therefore, hydraulic aperture is a depth-dependant parameter. In this paper, new empirical equations are introduced to calculate the hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities at different depths. These equations were developed on the basis of back analysis of compiled packer tests from different actual cases. They provide the capability to calculate range of variation and average hydraulic aperture when the orientation of discontinuity and field stress tensor are given. Furthermore, it is possible to calculate the hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities when its value is given for another depth. A hydraulic aperture of 7.7?µm was calculated by this method, comparing well with a reported site value of 8.3?µm for rock discontinuities at the Stripa mine project at a depth of 385?m. The oxidants which participate in the bacterially catalyzed oxidation of minerals are dissolved oxygen and some aqueous iron(III) complexes. Speciation studies indicate that these complexes consist of iron (III) -sulfate and iron (III) -arsenate ions. The complexes have different oxidizing powers as indicated by their calculated standard reduction potentials. The thermodynamics of the oxidations of pyrite and arsenopyrite are related to the mechanisms of the reactions. The mechanisms are discussed in terms of primary processes occurring on the mineral surfaces and the secondary reactions of the primary products. The importance of the conclusions to plant operation is discussed.

The Genesis gold mine, owned and operated by Newmont Gold Co., is located in section 31, T36N, R50E within Eureka County, Nevada along the Carlin Trend of sediment-hosted disseminated gold deposits. Mining commenced in 1986 with present mineable and stockpiled reserves listed at 17,711,000 tons of ore averaging 0.073 opt Au, totalling 1.292 million ounces of gold. Ore is primarily hosted within Devonian calcareous siltstones that have been subjected to intensive argillization and silicification episodes. Additional mineralogic and geochemical features of the Genesis ores include enrichment in iron-oxides, kaolinite, arsenic and antimony; the ore zone is relatively depleted in carbonates and sulfides as a result of supergene and hypogene oxidation. Two major structural zones enhanced the permeability of the siltstones and served as the main hydrothermal conduits within the deposit. Prior to the main ore stage, the host rocks were subjected to metasomatic effects caused by emplacement of the Juro-Cretaceous Goldstrike granodiorite pluton and associated dikes and sills. Micron-size gold occurs in clays, micro-crystalline quartz, and in arsenical complexes. Non-oxidized carbonaceous and sulfidic ores and silica-locked ores result in variable preg-robbing and refractory responses during cyanide recovery. Selective mining and milling has resulted in the successful treatment of the Genesis orebody.

Results of a study conducted to determine the properties of iron ore pellets made from Mount Wright and Carol Lake ore concentrate fines with partial and full substitution of bentonite by several organic binders are presented. Carboxy methyl celluloses 7H and 6TL, hydroxy ethyl cellulose (natrosol) and modified guar gum all produce pellets of acceptable wet, green and dry strength. However, when fully substituted, an inorganic binder such as calcium carbonate is required for satisfactory strength development after induration. Mixing the Carol Lake ore with Mount Wright ore in a 50-50 ratio also achieves the same result. The failure of the Carol Lake ore in the pelletization process is attributed to the low hematite content of the ore. The results are very similar to those from the extrusion studies reported earlier (8).

Artisanal mining is a rudimentary activity that today attracts over 30 million people in virtually all developing countries around the world. As the price of gold has steadily increased over the past decade, 15 million people have become involved in extracting this metal in 55 countries. Individuals have switched to mining from primary industrial sectors such as agriculture to increase their income. These workers generally have little capital, low education levels, and no previous experience in mining. Together with a lack of technical support from governments, these factors lead to disorganized and informal mining activities that generate environmental and social chaos. The absence of technical knowledge and capital has caused a proliferation of Gold Ore Processing Centres (GOPCs) around the world established by local entrepreneurs, who provide a way for miners to process their ores using amalgamation for a fee that is relatively low to non-existent. Gold recovery by the independent miners rarely exceeds 30 % and gold-rich tailings are left at GOPC facilities as a form of payment. GOPCs recover around 90 % of the remaining gold using cyanidation, flotation, and amalgamation, without any compensation paid to the miners. In processing these mercury (Hg)-contaminated tailings, Hg cyanide complexes are produced that are dumped into aquatic environments, leading to rapid bioaccumulation of Hg by fish. In the town of Portovelo, Ecuador, the establishment of partnerships between GOPC entrepreneurs and artisanal miners has proven to be successful in forming legal small-mining companies to create more equity and reduce pollution. About 108 GOPCs operate in Portovelo-Zaruma, with 40 % of these still working illegally without proper regulation and permitting. Over 20 % of these GOPCs continue to use grinding, concentrating and amalgamating of the gold, with 58 % performing cyanidation of tailings and/or gravity concentrates, and 15 % combining flotation with cyanidation. About 94 % of the GOPCs concentrate the ore prior to applying amalgamation, which significantly reduces Hg emissions to the environment. Incorporating flotation has given the operators increased skills in mineral recovery, with the side benefit of producing a copper concentrate as added value. Despite these innovations, mineral recovery is still inefficient, and waste management is a major challenge in creating true sustainability in this sector (technical efficiency together with social and environmental responsibilities). Further organization, training and capacity-building are needed. The principles of Lean Manufacturing Methods ("Just in Time" production and "Automation") are suggested as possible techniques to assist small GOPCs to become sustainable. In this concept, a larger mining company can become associated with artisanal miners in a partnership to provide training and investment for exploitation of small deposits that would be infeasible as a single large operation. As well, an International Training Centre for Artisanal Miners (ITCAM) is being established in Portovelo with collaboration of the Government of Ecuador to further enhance and upgrade mining activities in this region. ITCAM will provide artisanal miners with technical, business and environmental training to become responsible small-scale miners. In building this new capacity, ITCAM intends to create an atmosphere of trust to attract private and corporate investors to become partners with artisanal miners.

Stratigraphy of the Hamersley Province in Western Australia, featuring alternating units of banded iron formations and shales with contrasting electrical properties in a mostly gently undulating shallow-dipping layered geometry, is particularly favourable to airborne time-domain electromagnetic mapping techniques. Manipulated vertical cross-sections of modelled conductivity obtained from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of SkyTEM304 data enable the exploration geologist to interpret weathering profiles, shallow-dipping stratigraphy and steep structures, all of which are crucial aspects of bedded iron ore deposits genesis models.The Cobra Project is located 14 km east of the NNW-trending Menindee Fault Zone, which defines the western margin of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia. The region comprises an extensive plateau of Brockman Iron Formation cut by a series of horst and grabens with a regional dextral strike-slip component. The 150° striking horst and grabens and associated 060° striking conjugate faults have approximate frequencies of 400 and 2000 m, respectively, and control the bulk of the iron mineralisation. Syn to late 150° trending dykes in part intrude the faults.In the Cobra region, elucidating the structurally dislocated stratigraphy without closely spaced drilling is very challenging. Geological mapping is hindered by the paucity of mappable stratigraphic markers within the banded iron formations and kinematic indicators. Airborne magnetic and remote sensing data sets highlight the dense lineament network, but provide limited assistance in quantifying relatively small apparent displacements, or distinguishing faults from dykes with reasonable confidence.Interpretation of modelled conductivity cross-sections generated from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of airborne electromagnetic method (AEM) data offers invaluable insight where the quality of mapping or drilling is wanting. Subsequent targeted field checking and infill drilling validated the geological model interpreted from the integration of these data sets.The AEM technique alone cannot decipher the complex geological environments often present in the Hamersley Province but can facilitate effective iron ore exploration by focusing precious field time and assisting structural and stratigraphic interpretations in areas with sporadic and shallow geological data.CITATION:Murray, R, Neroni, R, Kepert, D and Bresnahan, J, 2017. "Surface mines continue to implement highwalls for several reasons, such as increasing recovery, improving margins, and justifying higher stripping ratios. Highwall stability is a complex issue that is dependent upon a variety of mining and geologic factors, and a safe design is necessary for a successful surface operation. To improve highwall stability, it is important to understand the connection between local geology and blasting.Explosives are employed throughout the mining industry for primary rock breakage. There are a number of controlled blasting techniques that can be implemented to improve highwall stability. These include line drilling, smooth wall blasting, trim blasting, buffer blasting, air decking, and presplitting. Each of these techniques have associated advantages and disadvantages. Understanding local geology is necessary for selecting the appropriate controlled blasting technique. Furthermore, understanding the limitations and conditions for successful implementation of each technique is necessary. A discussion of the impact of geologic conditions on highwall stability is provided. Additionally, discussion is provided for the successful incorporation of the controlled blasting techniques listed above, and the associated mining and geologic factors that influence the selection and design of controlled blasting plans. Finally, a new methodology is proposed.INTRODUCTIONExplosives are used throughout the mining industry as the standard for primary rock breakage, a critical part of the mining cycle. In 2015, the U.S.. consumed 2.2 million tons of explosives (Apodaca, 2015). The coal mining industry accounted for the majority of explosive consumption, accounting for approximately 63% of total explosives. The quarrying and nonmetal mining industries accounted for 12% of explosive consumption, and the metal mining industry accounted for 9% (Apodaca, 2015). This constitutes 84% of the explosives used in the U.S. However, the energy released during the detonation process is often in excess of that required to adequately fragment the surrounding rock (Jhanwar and Jethwa, 2000). This excessive energy, along with over confinement and poor blast geometry, will cause damage to the undisturbed rock mass beyond the intended boundary of the blast. This event is known as overbreak or back-break (ISEE, 2011)."

"This paper discusses how elemental analysis of conveyed bulk flows in real time using PGNAA (Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis) technology has resulted in significant improvements in advancing plant control in mineral processing operations. PGNAA through belt, full stream, continuous, multi-elemental, real time analysis technology is explained. Capabilities and limitations in plant operating environments are discussed including comparison with other real time, on-line technologies through review of published information available for on-conveyor minerals applications. Case studies include an iron ore and copper-gold company, both of which consider the technology an essential component in advanced plant control necessary in new process flow sheet designs, rather than an optimisation tool.INTRODUCTION Process operators rely on supply of a reasonable ore quality and consistency from the mine. Unfortunately neither the mining nor process operators have much control over the ore quality once it has been put into the crusher. Grade control typically stops once the material is designated as ore and the process plant operator needs to process it irrespective of quality. Plant control is most effective when technologies measure process streams directly and preferably in real time. Measuring sampling streams that are not representative of the primary flow will result in incorrect plant control decisions. Sampling coarse conveyed flows is expensive and impractical at many operations, however, this does not mean those flows cannot be measured. Investigations to find techniques suitable for real time elemental analysis have focussed on the application of known laboratory techniques to process streams. For conveyed applications, development of neutron irradiation techniques were most promising and early studies indicated potential success for bauxite measurement (Beurton et al, 1995). Tran & Evans (2001) concluded there was no equivalent technology to PGNAA in terms of material penetration power and that the technology was eminently suitable for basic industries such as cement. Mineral processing activities in general reflected the economic ills of 1981 and early 1982, but in some areas the depressed state of the industry resulted in increased activity. As were all aspects of the minerals industry, processing plant operations were severely affected by the recession-prone economy, by sagging prices for primary metal products-copper, molybdenum, nickel, iron, manganese, and especially uranium-and numerous shutdowns and layoffs. Copper production by major producers in Arizona and Utah was severely curtailed; Amax, the major US molybdenum, producer did considerable belt-tightening; and the uranium industry was in a state of disaster. Even the precious metal superstars-gold and silver-were affected, with a steady decline throughout the year in world market prices. Perhaps hardest hit have been newly developed properties, particularly in the uranium industry, and old-line properties where historical development impacts today. No longer can such properties afford the luxuries, for example, of a long haul distance between mine and plant or continued use of antiquated facilities. Surprisingly enough, the very state of the economy has caused increased activity in some sectors of the mineral processing industry. In mill design, although large projects have been tabled, smaller projects have gone on, with innovations in design, often for cost-saving reasons, that will affect future designing approaches. Economic restrictions are impacting on mill flowsheets as researchers look for improvements and better, less expensive techniques. Other unit processes-hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, concentration, materials handling-are impacted by the need for a better, less costly product. Although at the end of the first quarter of 1982, no major environmental legislation had been enacted, rumors persist that there will be a loosening of some of the stricter standards, both in the requirements themselves and in the time allowance for implementation. The year had seen some relaxation in how current legislation and standards are administered. For example, in OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) operations, there has been a shift toward voluntary checking of industry compliance with work rules, rather than emphasis on agency inspections. However, the industry continues to view environmental factors as having major influence on future operations and efforts to design for environmental safety are becoming almost as important as the processes themselves. Throughout the industry there has been a further focussing on project management, recognizing the necessity for tight control of budgets and schedules-and the systems used to effect them. Many modern export terminals are now in construction while others have either been held up or cancelled. Economics and environmental permits have been some of the major problems. Currently under construction are terminals in Newport News, VA; Charleston, SC; and Baltimore, MD. Expansion of existing facilities at Mobile, AL, and New Orleans, LA, is also well under way. A wide variety of systems and components are being used. They include traveling shiploaders, tunnel and bucket wheel reclaim¬ers, stackers and high line trippers, and bottom and side dump-type car dumpers.
