"Experiments were performed in a non-transferred arc, thermal plasma flow reactor to investigate the synthesis of ultra fine boron nitride (BN) powder from the reaction system of boron oxide (Bz03), methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen (H2). Argon (Ar) and nitrogen (N2) were used as plasma gases. The thermodynamics and kinetics of the synthesis reactions were examined and a chemical reaction mechanism was proposed. The powders produced under certain operating conditions had high purity and good conversions. All the products were extremely fine powders (< 30nm) and were uniform in size distribution. The powder products were analyzed by chemical and physical characterization. The effects of the reaction variables on the conversions from B203 to BN and the purity of the products were investigated.IntroductionIn the past few decades, boron nitride (BN) has attracted a great deal of interest because of its excellent thermal, chemical and electrical properties (1-4) It has a high thermal stability and thermal conductivity. Chemically, it is very stable and is not wetted by most molten metals and slag. It is also an excellent low loss insulator. Since hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is light in weight, strong and easily fabricated, it has applications in a variety of specialized high temperature areas, such as a high temperature lubricant, crucibles for molten metals, thermocouple protection tubes, break rings for horizontal continuous casting of steel, and friction reducing coatings. In cubic form, boron nitride is one of the hardest materials known, second only to diamond, and it is an excellent material for tools in which the use of carbon based materials is limited by oxidation or reaction with metals."

"Good ventilation is one of the first requisites in the safe and efficient operation of a coal mine. If a mine is gassy, the uninterrupted circulation of an adequate supply of fresh air is imperative if that mine is to operate with a relative degree of safety. That ventilation is not •only a safety consideration, but is an extremely important economic factor is shown by the fact that in many mines 50 per cent of the total power cost is for ventilation.The system used in the Graceton Coal & Coke Co. mine, Graceton, Pa., is believed to be unusual in many ways. Its application in this mine has re¬sulted in good ventilation of the working faces, no interruption to the venti¬lating current through the use of doors. a large- portion of the air circulated by the fan reaching the working places, low velocity air currents on traveling and haulage ways, low water gage and power consumption of the fan, and well-ventilated gob areas.This investigation was made possible through the courtesy of W. H. Robertson, mine superintendent. Fred Roberts, mining engineer, and Floyd Phillippi, mine foreman, assisted in the collection of information.The Graceton mine is a slope, opening the Upper Freeport or E bed, on the Pennsylvania Railroad about midway between Blairsville and Indiana at Graceton, Indiana County, Pa. The production is approximately 1,000 tons of coal per day and about 170 men are employed underground. The mine is considered gassy and was found to be liberating approximately 300,000 cubic feet of methane in 24 hours. The return airways terminate at a circular, concrete lined shaft 12 feet in diameter and about 115 feet deep at which is the exhaust fan.Mining is done by a block system with flat or level entries turned off the main slope at intervals of 1,350 feet, off which the butt headings are turned up the grade parallel to the slope. Rooms, which are about 225 feet long and 12 feet wide, are turned off the butt headings on 80-foot centers, leaving a block about 68 feet thick between rooms.Haulage on the main slope is by rope, with the hoist on the surface. This hoist is electrically driven through a 500-h.p., 2,300-volt motor. The rope used in this haulage is 1-1/8 inches in diameter. There are five electric trolley locomotives - one 10-ton and four 6-ton - which do all of the hauling in the flat and butt entries.Before it is blasted all of the solid coal and as much of the pillar coal as can be cut with safety is undercut by permissible mining machines. Shooting is done by shot firers who use permissible explosives, electric detonators, and dry-cell, nonpermissible batteries.In rooms where conditions are normal, timbering consists of two rows of posts on 4-foot centers. Posts are required to be within 6 feet of the face in machine-cut places and within 3 feet of the face in hand-mined places. Timbering on entries, where required, is of two types: a bar hitched into the ribs and supported by the coal, or 3-piece sets. The legs of the 3- piece sets used on the slope are set well back into the rib to prevent their being. knocked out by a wreck."

Empirical pillar design methods are commonly used in the mining industry. The parameters within which these methods are valid are frequently unknown to the user or ignored. In addition, empirical design may not consider essential parameters such as blasting effects, orebody dip and the presence of geological structures, which all adversely affect the stability of the pillars. This can result in potentially serious pillar design strength over-estimates. Although the commonly based tributary area method is generally conservative, as the spans are seldom that large relative to the depth, failing to consider other relevant parameters can result in errors. Problems associated with an under-designed pillar can range from a local pillar collapse to a catastrophic chain reaction collapse (or run). Over-designed pillars are generally safe but reduce the extraction of the orebody, thus adversely affecting the profitability of the mining operation. We used laboratory tests and numerical modelling to understand the effects of pillar orientation, blasting and the presence of discontinuities on pillar strength. Reduction factors were developed with these models to be implemented in conjunction with the existing empirical pillar design methods. For any pillar or mine design, once it is implemented, the actual performance of the system must be checked regularly by observation and monitoring and adjusted if needed. The pillar design approach outlined in this paper can better optimize the pillar mining method by considering other generally ignored but important parameters, thus improving safety, productivity, and economic aspects.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a continuation of statistics pertaining to distribution of petroleum reservoirs (or fields), wells, and production by depth and producing rate classification in the United States. These statistics show the change that has occurred since results of a similar study were published by the Bureau of Mines in 1967. Data are presented in tabular form by State for the 18 principal oil-producing States and by subdivision for the two larges t oil-producing States, Texas and Louisiana, Tabular summations and graphical illustrations are presented for the Nation. The data are classified by 4-barrel-of-oil-per-day rate increments up to 36 barrels and one increment of greater than 36 barrels of oil per day and by 2,000-foot depth increments up to 8,000 feet and one depth increment of greater than 8,000 feet. The overall average producing rates for States and the Nation have been published for many years; although such rates are useful, they are very general descriptions of producibility. A breakdown of production, wells, and reservoirs by various depths and rates and by State or by State subdivision provides a more detailed description of producibility.

T e mechanization of industry to reduce labor costs and to improve product quality is affecting he scale industry as it has affected many other industries. With increased emphasis on higher production rates many operators are experiencing difficulty in overcoming production problems where weight is a factor. Unfortunately, the scale industry has not shown the development over the last twenty-five years that other instrument industries have. For centuries the balance scale has been the standard and the workhorse of most weighing operations. In recent years considerable effort has been applied to designs to make balance scales more acceptable to industries employing automatic or semi-automatic processes. For the most part the designers have not attempted to replace the basic scale but toautomate functions of material handling and human judgement. Modern dump scales, for example, will accept material from a conveyor until a preset amount of material is on the scale, At this time the scale turns off the conveyor, dumps the load of material and repeats the operation with any desired timing. These improvements have helped industry. Even the scale observer has been replaced with devices which observe the scale reading and operate on weighed objects according to their weights. In spite of&apos; the application of automation to the material handling, the balance scale has not been completely satisfactory. One reason for this is fairly evident when one considers the construction of the scales. Inherently, they are slow devices because of the inertia of the beams. The beam scale, primarily a static measuring device, is at the best limited to slow dynamic measurements.

"In recent years, there has been an increasing focus on the hydrometallurgical processing of molybdenite, with the decline of high-grade and easily handled molybdenum minerals. In this work, a novel method of selective extraction of complex molybdenite concentrate, which is characteristic of high-grade copper ore, has been investigated. The results show that the leaching of chalcopyrite was impacted by the pH of the electrolyte when sodium carbonate and ammonium acid carbonate were added to the electrolyte. The leaching rate of molybdenum reached 99.39%, but chalcopyrite could not be leached at all in 240 min under experimental conditions of liquid-to-solid ratio 25:1, concentration of NaCl 4 mol/L, pH=9, room temperature and agitation speed 400 rpm. The grade of copper in the residue was 21.84%, with a recovery 99.93%. The technology of selective electro-oxidation leaching of molybdenum and recovery of copper from complex molybdenite concentrate is an effective separation method. The diffusion control model can be used to describe the process of leaching of molybdenum. The activation energy of the leaching reaction was found to be approximately 9.21 kJ/mol.IntroductionWorldwide, high-grade and easy-to-handle ore is decreasing, while the proportion of low-grade and complex ore is increasing. Porphyry copper ores with associated low-grade molybdenite are very abundant in China. Molybdenum is a valuable byproduct in the processing of porphyry copper deposits where the molybdenum is present in low quantities in the form of molybdenite (MoS2). In the conventional processing of copper sulfide ores by froth flotation, most of the molybdenite in the ore floats along with the copper sulfides. In this way, a bulk copper-molybdenum concentrate is produced. Afterward, the bulk coppermolybdenum concentrate is treated by differential flotation to obtain a rougher molybdenum concentrate, which requires several successive cleaning steps to produce a final molybdenum concentrate. However, it is widely recognized that flotation alone cannot economically produce a high-grade molybdenite concentrate, i.e., with less than 0.5% Cu. Therefore, in most cases, it is necessary to use a final step of chemical purification of the molybdenite concentrate to reduce the copper content to a level suitable for the market (Antonijevic and Pacovic,1992; Gerhardt et al., 2001; Fu and Zhong, 2003; Reza et al., 2006, Rafael et al., 2013)."

The two key results of rock blasting are fragmentation and movement of geomaterials. Movement/flow of the blasted rock is often referred to as heave. Moving rock with explosives rather than mechanical equipment can improve mining efficiency. Such is the case with coalmine cast blasting. Controlling and directing rock movement through explosive deck delay timing can greatly improve ore recovery by segregating ore and waste. In both cases, understanding, predicting and controlling heave is an important element of successful blasting.Computer programs for predicting 2D blasting-induced heave have been used in mining for decades, helping to drive the innovation of new and more efficient mining methods, ie cast blasting. The past few years have seen the advent of 3D distinct element modelling of blast-induced heave. This is an important advancement because most blasting situations are three-dimensional in nature, especially when controlling the direction and intensity of rock movement through explosive deck delay timing.This paper documents the first full-scale blasting simulations in 3D with distinct element models that include hundreds of blastholes and in excess of a million particles, made possible with parallel processing. Surface mineral blasting is the focus of this study which treats the effect of blasthole delay timing on ore recovery. Ore waste and dilution resulting from typical row-on-row delay timing will be demonstrated. Also demonstrated will be the ore recovery possible with delay timing designs that significantly enhance ore/waste segregation. Partially stabilized zirconia ceramics (PSZ) were prepared by microwave sintering using natural baddeleyite which was obtained by flotation of baddeleyite ore as starting materials. Because of using natural baddeleyite as raw and the process producing no waste, it realized shorter process, energy savmg, environmentally-friendly and non-damage processing. In this work natural baddeleyite stabilized with 3.8wt.% CaO were sintered at 1300°C for 60min in a multi-mode 2.45GHz microwave furnace. Microwave sintering could fast heating and sintering. Besides that, microwave sintering could heat materials wholly, low the sintering temperature, improve the materials properties and save energy. X-ray spectrum displayed the product composed by the tetragonal phase and monoclinic phase that also showed the product was PSZ. Fine and uniform microstructures were observed in the product through scanning electron microscopy. PSZ which was with high density was confirmed by the method of the Archimedes technique.

Several reconnaissance-type surface and drill core samples of Arctic Northwestern Alaska coals were taken during the summer field seasons of 1964 and 1966 for coking studies. Surface samples were taken from the Kokolik River and the Cape Beaufort areas; core samples were obtained from the Kukpowruk River and the Cape Beaufort areas. Only one Kokolik River surface sample possessed coking properties. This sample, representing an 11.6-ft coal seam, made coke approaching metallurgical quality when a 30-pct portion of selected blending coals was added. Four Kukpowruk River core samples, each representing the same 19-to 20-ft coal seam, were all of about the same coking quality. No differences of coke quality attributable to depth of permanently frozen overburden were found, but the data confirm previously reported information that the 19- to 20-ft coal bed is a potentially satisfactory base coking coal. In the Cape Beaufort area, a core sample with appreciable coking properties was taken at depth from a coalbed determined noncoking in a surface sample.

Small-scale continuous flotation tests are described in which the influence of 1) pulp density and 2) feed rate on the rate of flotation are investigated. The results provide further evidence of first-order kinetics for flotation and indicate that tests at different feed rates provide a particularly simple method of determining rate constants. Flotation kinetics are discussed in general terms. Over a period of many years numerous research workers have studied the rate of recovery of valuable materials from flotation pulps with a view to deter-mining the mechanism of the froth flotation process. Froth flo ation is fundamentally a collision process involviug at some stage collision and then mutual attachment between air bubbles and mineral particles. It is possible to draw analogies therefore between the flotation process involving mainly macroscopic particles and the ordinary processes of chemical reaction kinetics involving collisions between atoms, molecules and ions. By adopting this analogy we may postulate a general equation representing the kinetics of the flotation process: -dC/dt =K.CC ,Aa (1) The rate constant, K, will be a complex function involving reagent concentrations, particle and bubble sizes, induction times and no doubt flotation cell design. However, these are factors which can be kept constant in any series of experiments, permitting investigation of the exponents a and c, which determine the order of the reaction occurring in flotation. The various research investigations carried out so far have all aimed at evaluating a and c and in the majority of cases only since the concentration of air has usually been kept constant in a series of tests, so that a relationship of the following type has been investigated: -dC/dt = K1 Cc (2) The techniques of both batch testing and continuous testing have been used to investigate this relationship. "This paper examines test results and grinding mill design for the recent Fortune Minerals’ NICO Project, located in the Northwest Territories. SAG milling and rod milling options are compared. Rod milling is clearly shown to be the best option because of the ore’s extreme resistance to breakage in a SAG mill environment.Surprisingly, the Bond Ball Mill Wi was 13 kWh/t for this ore. The Bond Rod Mill Wi was 20 kWh/t, whereas the SAG pinion energy to grind the ore to T80 1.7 mm was 30 kWh/t. The existence of ore with this ratio of SAG hardness to Bond BM Wi has not been previously observed. If not considered, this critical relationship may adversely impact the accuracy of mill design. This paper substantiates the significance of these findings to achieve successful grinding design on ore that is macro-competent during primary size reduction, but relatively normal during secondary grinding.INTRODUCTIONThe NICO Cobalt-Gold-Bismuth-Copper deposit is located 160 km northwest of the City of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. It is the largest IOCG-type deposit (aka Olympic Dam-type) currently recognized in Canada with Mineral Reserves of 21.8 million tonnes contained within a larger 57 million tonne, lower-grade Mineral Resource. The project, owned 100% by Fortune Minerals Limited, has been assessed in a positive definitive feasibility study, subject to underground test mining and pilot plant testing, and is now in the permitting stage to develop a combined open pit and underground mine and process plant. An updated process flow sheet incorporates conventional crushing, grinding and bulk flotation, followed by filtration for shipment of a concentrate to a purpose-built refinery proposed to be built near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. At the refinery, separate bismuth and cobalt concentrates will be produced following regrinding. The hydrometallurgical process methods include: pressure acid leach, precipitation, ion exchange, and electro-winning for recovery of cobalt as 99.8% cathode; solvent extraction and electro-winning of by-product copper cathode; ferric chloride leach and electro-winning for recovery of bismuth as 99.5% cathode; and cyanidation of the leach residues for recovery of gold as doré."

"The Mine Haul Road Optimisation Alliance (HROA) is a unique Australian industry–academia collaboration that has been developed to support mine haul road operators. The alliance integrates industry, end-user service providers and academic research expertise in mine haul road design, construction and operation to identify, quantify, implement and monitor the various equipment, materials and road management strategies and solutions required to drive haulage productivity improvements.Initially, a broad overview of the university–industry collaborative landscape is presented, following which the current situation in the Australian mining sector is reviewed both nationally, and on a country-wide basis internationally. This insight places into context the opportunity that strategic collaborations present, to drive productivity and efficiency in mining, while also delivering innovative technology solutions.Following an overview of the HROA collaborative structure, aims and objectives, it is shown how academia and industry collaborations can deliver a more robust and needs-driven solution to mine haul road design, performance and management, especially where integrated solutions are needed. "Considerable research has been conducted on the anodic oxidation of methanol in fuel cells. The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide in aqueous solutions to form methanol is the same reaction in reverse, i.e. CO2 + 6 H+ + 6 e- ? CH3OH + H2O. The same catalysts and conditions may operate for both reaction directions. This carbon dioxide reduction reaction, however, must be able to compete with the electrochemical reduction of water to form hydrogen gas. Thermodynamically, the reduction of CO2 to form CH3OH is slightly more favorable than the reduction of water. The use of nearly neutral electrolytes rather than acidic electrolytes makes the reduction of CO2 kinetically more favorable. The thermodynamics of various reaction steps are presented. Similarities exist with the electrochemical reduction of CO2 and the green-plant photosynthesis process that converts CO2 to carbohydrates.IntroductionVirtually all of the oxygen in the earth’s atmosphere is of biological origin having been generated by green-plant photosynthesis from water and carbon dioxide [1]. The net reaction can be represented byCO2 + H2O ? O2 + [CH2O] (carbohydrates, etc.) (1)Chlorophyll and enzymes promote this reaction, and the energy required comes from sunlight. The actual photosynthesis process is a complex multistage reaction and requires 469 kJ mol-1 of energy supplied by the sun. Isotope tracer experiments using 18O have shown that both the oxygen atoms in the O2 molecule originate from H2O, whereas oxygen atoms in the carbohydrates come from CO2 [1]. The total amount of water on the earth is split by photosynthesis and reconstituted by respiration and combustion once every 2 million years or so. The photosynthetically generated oxygen gas temporarily enters the atmosphere and is recycled about once every 2000 years [1]. The carbon dioxide is partly recycled in the atmosphere and oceans after an average residence time of 300 years and is partly fixed by precipitation of CaCO3 and other carbonate minerals [1]."

New Nedre Fiskumfoss is a construction project in North Trøndelag, Namsen River. The purpose of the contract is construction of a new hydropower plant, that will phase out the existing power plant in the same waterfall. The contract consists of a tunnel system with cross sections from 16 m2 to 150 m2, powerhouse and transformer in rock caverns, 6 shafts and major works with inlet and outlet below river level. Technical challenges consist of demanding design on rock extraction, cofferdams, solid constructions with challenging design and demanding rebar work, as well as restrictions and unpredictable water flow in a national salmon river.

A comparison of key technical and economical parameters of SAG and HPGR circuits is made, based on testing of several ore types for greenfield projects. The comparison of results make it possible to estimate efficiency of the technologies application, depending on ore hardness and taking into account potential risks for a circuit under design. "The Inco Matte Separation process was the first commercial application using mineral processing techniques to separate nickel from copper from a slow-cooled matte in Sudbury since 1945. In Inco Sudbury operations, bulk sulphide concentrate containing chalcopyrite, pentlandite, pyrrhotite and some gangue minerals is flash smelted and converted to Bessemer matte. During the controlled slow-cooling of the Bessemer matte, discrete mineral grains of new mineral phases are formed: copper sulfide precipitates as chalcocite (Cu2S), nickel sulfide as heazlewoodite (Ni3S2) and a Cu-Ni-Fe alloy is also formed. Flotation is employed to separate Cc from Hz under high lime conditions (pH>12) with diphenyl guanidine (DPG) as both collector and frother.A simplified matte separation flowsheet is as follows. After grinding, the Cu-Ni-Fe alloy is removed by magnetic separation. All precious metals are recovered in the metallic alloy. Following the rougher flotation, a Cu concentrate is produced after cleaner and re-cleaner flotation in mechanical and column cells. Two Ni concentrates are produced: a high-grade Ni product containing less than 0.8% Cu from the scavenger column tails and a low-grade Ni product containing 5% Cu from the middlings circuit tails. A stream containing the inseparable Cc and Hz from the middlings circuit is generated and recycled back to the smelter. The quantity of this stream is typically about 3% of total feed and can be as high as 5%, greatly decreasing the overall matte separation efficiency. The large mass of the recycle stream is a direct result of poor Cc/Hz separation selectivity in the middlings circuit. The middlings circuit, consisting of a thickener, a regrind mill and two columns, processes two streams: cleaner tailings and scavenger concentrates. The thickener contributes significantly to oxidation due to the long residence time of the pulp in this unit."

Poland is the ninth largest coal producer in the world and Coal Company is the largest Polish producer of this deposit yielding 51% of national production. Coal Company mines are located in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. These are underground mines which operate in difficult geological conditions at great depths of up to 1200 m. One of the most common natural hazards in Polish mines are rockburst and seismic hazard impacting on surface infrastructure and habitants. In the assessment of the rockburst and seismic hazard methods of mining seismology play a leading role. This paper presents progress that was achieved in the last few years in the implementation of new seismic monitoring systems and seismic interpretation methods for the prevention of hazard deriving from seismicity induced by mining. This progress in assessment of rockburst hazard and impact of seismic activity on the surface infrastructure was achieved through close cooperation between the Coal Company and Central Mining Institute ? the country?s leading scientific institute in the field of mining seismology. New theoretical solutions are in the process of testing in mines of Coal Company where seismic monitoring systems are installed and controlled by well-qualified personnel. Some directions of further joint actions to increase the effectiveness of rockburst and seismic hazard assessment are presented as well.

Renewable assets have large upfront capital costs but minimal operating expenses over their lifetimes. In some instances, deals can be structured so that direct capital investment is feasible, with paybacks typically within 5-7 years. In others, the burden of renewable CAPEX must be removed in order to create an attractive alternative to fossil-fuel-fired generation. Hatch has designed and oversees the construction of a renewable installation, which is financed, owned and operated by a special-purpose entity. Renewable energy is then delivered to the mining company via a customized power purchase agreement at a price that is lower than the levelized cost of fossil fuels. In this way, the mining company removes the burden of the renewable energy CAPEX from its balance sheet, thus freeing up capital, decreasing risk, and making the predictable, lower cost of renewable power more attractive than the variable cost of fossil fuels. This paper presents the above business model and success stories of hybrid power at remote sites (wind and solar coupled with diesel engine).

"REVIEW OF ISA's DRAFT EXPLOITATION REGULATIONS – HAVE KEY STAKEHOLDERS' CONCERNS BEEN ADDRESSED ADEQUATELY?In early August 2017, the ISA published a revised draft of the exploitation regulations. My presentation will focus on the extent to which key State and Contractor issues raised in formal submissions in November 2016 have been addressed in the revised draft and any additional key issues in the revised draft which are likely to cause significant concern for Contractors.ABSTRACTFollowing the ISA's call for submissions in response to draft zero of the exploitation regulations in July 2016, 43 responses from stakeholders were received by the ISA in November 2016. My presentation will start by briefly looking at how the ISA has continued to engage with stakeholders following the publication of draft zero of the exploitation regulations, including at payment regime workshops in London (November 2016) and Singapore (April 2017) and at the environmental workshop held in Berlin in March 2017. It will also touch on the publication in February 2017 of what was in effect a very preliminary draft of the environmental regulations before moving on to consider in detail the extent to which key State and Contractor issues have been addressed in the ISA revised draft exploitation regulations which were published in August 2017. My review of the formal submissions will include, amongst other things, commentary on:(i) the level of Stakeholder response (State Parties to UNCLOS, Sponsoring States, Privately owned Contractors, State Owned Contractors and NGOs);(ii) the quality of the submissions (particularly by States and Contractors); (iii) the key concerns raised by State and Contractor stakeholders and how those issues have been addressed in the revised draft exploitation regulations; and(iv) how all stakeholders need to further engage with the ISA to ensure that the exploitation code adequately addresses the legitimate and reasonable concerns of each Stakeholder group (e.g. Contractors, Sponsoring States, Developing States and NGOs)."
