Following the coffee break, Clark Moseley presented the first annual Institute Safety Achievement Awards for the safest mines in the eight member state region. The awards were based on: 1. "The use of calcine for selective zinc precipitation requires specialist knowledge to achieve satisfactory flowsheet design. Calcine from the bed of a fluid roaster is preferred, and factors such as the size distribution of ground calcine, the stoichiometric ratio of the calcine precipitant to the initial dissolved zinc concentration and the moisture content of the resultant filter cake are parameters which require critical attention. Extensive testing in a fully-integrated electrolytic zinc plant pilot plant has demonstrated that properly designed selective zinc precipitation plants using calcine as the precipitant are reliable operating units.The advantages of using calcine instead of limestone for selective zinc precipitation include a decreased cost of reagents, as well as avoiding the formation of by-product gypsum.Process simulation modelling has demonstrated that the use of calcine in this context has widespread application in the design of zinc plants with superior impurity and water balance control characteristics. A particularly powerful approach involves closed circuit washing. In this mode, filtrate from the selective zinc precipitation step is used to wash a zinc plant residue such as jarosite, and the resulting filtrate is returned to the selective zinc precipitation section. IntroductionThe Selective Zinc Precipitation (SZP) Process, developed and patented by the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited (EZ) may be used to achieve simultaneously, water balance and impurity control in an electrolytic zinc plantO,2). Impurities which may be controlled by the SZP process include chlorine, magnesium, manganese, potassium and sodium.In the SZP process, basic zinc sulphate is precipitated from a zinc sulphate solution by either limestone, lime or a compound containing zinc oxide, usually calcined zinc sulphide concentrate (calcine) or alternatively zinc oxide fume .The solids containing basic zinc sulphate are separated, typically, by filtration and returned to the zinc plant circuit as a neutralizing agent. The zinc depleted solution can either be discarded, or used to wash residues, thereby achieving water balance and impurity control (Fig. I)."

"In this work, modelling of galena flotation from a disseminated Pb-Zn ore containing 0,83 % Pb was investigated. In the flotation experiments, collector type and amount, frother type and amount, particle size, pH and flotation time were kept constant while solid ratio and depressant dosage were varied. The varied parameters are described with a mathematical model by using statistical design method. Central Composite Design method which is one of the principle response surface methodologies was used in statistical design and analysis of experimental results and process modelling. Two quadratic mathematical models were developed for Pb grade and Pb recovery. Analysis of variance showed that models obtained for Pb grade and Pb recovery were found to be statistically significant in 95 % confidence level. Predicted vs actual values of Pb grade and Pb recovery were also given in graphically. It was found that predicted values represent approximately 96 % and 94 % of actual Pb grade and Pb recovery, respectively. The high values of R-square (R2) indicate that the models developed for two response variables are powerful. INTRODUCTION Lead and zinc metals are widely used in electrical, mechanical, military, metallurgical, chemical, light and medical industries. Sulfide ores are the main resources for lead and zinc minerals (Luo et al., 2016). Froth flotation is the main beneficiation method to achieve lead and zinc sulfide minerals separation. There are two basic approaches to obtain lead and zinc separation by flotation. First, flotation of lead sulphide is carried out and zinc sulphide and gangue minerals are depressed by various depressants and second, the bulk flotation of lead and zinc sulphide is carried out to obtain a concentrate of lead and zinc, followed by the lead and zinc separation. (Yuan et al., 2012). Apart from concentration of lead and zinc by flotation, there are a few literature that reports concentrations of lead and zinc by gravity and hydrometallurgical methods with remarkable success (Goktepe, 2005; Yanbo et al., 2016)."

"Buried pipelines, tanks and other similar equipment are almost always present on large scale industrial sites, including in the oil and gas fields. However, as the proverb “out of sight, out of mind” suggests, it is easy to overlook proper maintenance procedures and simply assume that corrosion protection measures in place are working correctly. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, leading to significant environmental damage and loss of production. This paper describes several cases from various industries where buried equipment failed because of corrosion, sometimes with catastrophic results. It also presents various strategies, based on experience and new research, to help predict and prevent damage to underground metallic structures.INTRODUCTION Metallic underground structures are extremely common in industrial and commercial settings for numerous reasons. Burying pipes, tanks, wires and other similar equipment has numerous advantages: it provides significant protection from mechanical damage, frees up ground space that can be used for other purposes, requires little to no support structure and is generally more esthetically pleasing. However, this last benefit can also be considered the most significant disadvantage of underground equipment: becoming invisible and forgotten. While every engineer is aware of the importance of preventive maintenance, it is also human nature to somewhat forget about equipment that is hard to inspect and assume that everything is fine. This is unfortunately not always the case and failures in industrial settings can have extremely serious consequences. While economic aspects immediately come to mind (loss of production, cleanup cost, etc.), failure of underground equipment also results in an environmental and therefore public relations nightmare, especially in the oil and gas field. Leaks that would have been considered negligible in the past can now make national headlines and perfect reliability, while probably impossible to achieve, is now the goal of most companies. While environmental damage (real or perceived) is most often associated with leaks in the oil and gas industry, it can also affect the mining world. For example, the authors have worked on a project where a buried slurry pipeline had ruptured in the ground, causing a release of perfectly inert tailings. While the economic loss was low, the leak was reported in local media and caused a public relations problem."

GENERALTHE coal deposit, where it is being worked, consists of a bed of brown coal varying in thickness from 120 ft. to 200 ft., covered by an overburden of clay, drift, loam, etc., of a thickness of 22 ft. to 40 ft., and averaging 28 ft.The overburden is first entirely removed from the coal, and then the coal is excavated by. large revolving shovels which work at the bottom of the hole or open cut in the coal and deliver it in shovel bucketfuls to the transport system. The shovels owned by the Commission and available for this coal excavation are two Bucyrus steam revolving shovels, one being type 150B, weighing 150 tons, having a 21-cub. yd. bucket, and capable of digging a 47-ft. face; and the other being type 175B, weighing200 tons, having a 31-cub. yd. bucket, and capable of digging a 61-ft. face.In addition to these two steam shovels, the Commission has recently obtained a No. 250 Ruston electric revolving shovel weighing 340 tons, and having a bucket of 10 cub. yd. capacity, and capable of digging a 75-ft. face. When this electric shovel has been erected it will replace the steam shovels on the coal excavation, and the permanent transport system has been designed to take delivery of the coal from its bucket.The duty to be performed by the transport system is to take the coal from the shovels, elevate it out of the open cut, transport it to the screening house, deliver it iuto the hoppers at the top of this building, then to take the coal after it has passed over the screens and distribute the required grades to the power house and to the briquetting plant.

During the war the National Research Council at Ottawa sent out questionnaires to the managers of nearly all the industrial plants in Canada. Inquiry was made as to the research equipment possessed, the number of research workers employed and the nature of the research problems which still remained unsolved. Practically all the companies reported that they had no special facilities for research, had no re-search workers and did not require the assistance of the National Research Council-because they had no research problems. Perhaps we have here one of the chief reasons why certain of our manufacturers find themselves unable to meet foreign competition. For hundreds of years the Indian tribes of northern Chile worked, in a small way, the copper deposits at Chuquicamata. They had no research problems and made no striking success of their mining operations. Then came an American company with a research problem, which they proceeded to solve. To-day the stock of that company has a market value of about $140,000,000.

A novel two-stage froth flotation process to remove pyritic sulfur from fine- size coal is described. The process consists of a first-stage, standard coal flotation step in which high-ash refuse and some of the pyrite are removed as tailings. The first-stage clean coal froth concentrate is then repulped in fresh water, and a coal depressant, a pyrite collector, and a frother are added to float the remaining pyritic material. Laboratory and pilot plant flotation results with coals from the Lower Freeport and Pittsburgh beds are given. The pilot plant test results show that up to 80 percent pyritic sulfur reduction was achieved with the Lower Freeport bed coal and up to 50 percent with the Pittsburgh bed coal. Laboratory and pilot plant results were in excellent agreement, indicating that the process is a viable means of removing much of the sulfur from some coals.

Processes employing 'controlled at-mospheres in the heat-treatment of metals and alloys are now well established on an industrial scale, and the general principles involved and the advantages to be gained in the use of the technique have received considerable publicity over a period of years. During this time the greatest emphasis has been on the establishment of the process in industry, the main effort being devoted to development work on various types of atmospheres, their useful fields of application and the design of suitable heat-treatment furnaces in which they are to be used. The various types of controlled atmospheres are fairly well standardized, but there still remains a considerable field for the investigation of related problems, in connection with both the gas-generating equipment and the surface chemistry of the heat-treatment of metals, especially in complex controlled atmospheres. This paper describes certain investigations of this nature that were carried out in England up to 1939. The development of processes employing controlled atmospheres has been asso-ciated to a very large extent with the heat-treatment of steels, both because of the major importance of steel in industry and the many diverse and dificult prob-lems of surface chemistry involved when steels of such a wide range of composition are heated in the presence of active gases. Controlled atmospheres such as disso-ciated and burnt ammonia or charcoal gas are used in the heat-treatment of low-carbon and high-carbon steels, but from certain points of view a suitable atmosphere generated by the partial combustion of city gas is to be preferred. Both the ammonia derivatives are comparatively expensive, and even if the burnt ammonia is regenerated, thereby reducing operating costs, the capital expenditure of the gas plant may make it prohibitive for the smaller type of furnace installation. Charcoal-gas generators are not without their operating difficulties especially those associated with the quality of the charcoal, clinker formation and the removal of carbon dust from the generated gas. City gas has the advantage of being comparatively cheap and "on tap" in most if not all industrial centers. The use of raw city gas as a protective atmosphere in the heat-treatment of steels has been described,' but it presents certain difficulties because of its complex composition and its explosive nature when mixed with air. These factors, together with the tendency toward sooting at elevated temperatures, arising mainly from the hydrocarbon gases present, all militate against its use as a protective atmosphere in industrial furnaces. Knowledge of risks from exposure to hand-arm vibrations is usually presented by clinicians and researchers from a medical and engineering point of view. There is a strong need to develop innovative health promotion programs for exposed workers. Risk perceptions by vibration exposed workers and HAVS (hand-arm vibration syndrome) affected workers are less well known. In 1983, Brubaker demonstrated that 75% of studied fellers thought that whitening of the fingers was part of the job and/or an unrelated nuisance, while only 25% believed it was a disease. 1Grounds also showed that even though there were a very high number of forestry workers with white fingers, none considered quitting because of their condition. 2 It seems that many workers hesitate to declare the illness or believe they are less affected than they really are, perhaps from fear of losing their jobs and livelihood. 3 Risk awareness, on the part of exposed workers and their employers, as well as knowledge and acceptance of available preventive solutions are necessary steps before installing adequate preventive measures, whether organizational, behavioral or environmental. Workers need to understand fully the hazards and risks in order to be able to make informed decisions under uncertain conditions.4 Prerequisites include the following: workers knowledge about the risk, their attitude towards it, which in turn, can be influenced by values, needs and interests. Also, knowledge and attitudes towards safety behaviour, organizational or environmental barriers must be taken into account. Our research focuses on these key elements, which help bridge the gap between health promotion research and practice. Methods A descriptive exploratory study is in progress with workers exposed to hand-arm vibrations. It uses qualitative methods that include focus group discussions with workers exposed to hand-arm vibrations, as well as individual interviews with other key informants (employers, health care professionals). An open-ended questionnaire was developed to collect qualitative data on perceived risks and solutions to prevent or reduce HAVS. Based on an integrated theoretical framework related to known determinants of behavior change, the analysis will focus on the following5: 1) knowledge of health effects, safety, well-being and/or quality of life 2) related beliefs about individual susceptibility and severity of consequences 3) attitude and values related to hand-arm vibration exposure 4) knowledge and attitudes towards exposure reduction, as well as perceptions of barriers and facilitating factors for these measures, in the workplace environment or otherwise.

Molten slag used in the secondary refining process (RH process) for the production of Ultra-Low C (ULC) steel is typically composed of CaO-Al2O3-MgOsat.-FetO with minor constituents. FetO in the RH slag is the main source of reoxidation of the molten ULC steel in the ladle by 2Al + 3(FetO) = (Al2O3) + 3Fe, thereby serving as the source of the alumina inclusions. On the other hand, FetO also enhances the fluidity of the slag, thereby increasing inclusion absorption capacity. Optimum slag chemistry design is therefore required to produce clear ULC steel. The reoxidation kinetics was investigated in the present study by employing high-temperature experiments and developing the reaction rate model. Initial compositions of slag ((% CaO)0/(% Al2O3)0 and (% FetO)0)) and reaction temperature were varied and change of [% Al] in the molten steel was measured. The rate-controlling step was analysed. It was found that the rate-controlling step in some cases changed during the reoxidation: from a mass transport of Al in the molten steel to a mixed transport including Al2O3 in the molten slag. The experimental data validated the reaction rate model based on the elucidated reaction mechanism and FactSage thermodynamic database. The model suggested that high (% CaO)0/(% Al2O3)0 suppresses the reoxidation only when (% FetO)0 is low (5 or lower in the present study).

"Batch centrifugal gravity concentrators, which produce very high ratios of concentration, have become common place for recovering free gold within milling circuits. Their effectiveness has proven to be especially useful in recovering finer gold particles. The knowledge related to testing, modeling and scale-up of these systems has been well established over the recent decade mostly due to the efforts of the late Dr. Andre Laplante.Gravity separation technologies such as jigs, spirals and shaking tables can provide the increased mass yields required for minerals that occur at higher concentrations than gold, however their effectiveness tends to diminish at finer particle sizes. The development of high mass yield centrifugal concentrators has provided the opportunity to be able to recover a wide range of minerals at finer particle size classes when compared to the more traditional gravity concentration devices. These concentrators also provide additional benefits such as smaller unit footprint and automated operation.This paper discusses the background, current practices and future applications for high mass yield centrifugal concentrators in base metals, sulfides and industrial minerals. Bench scale, pilot scale and plant practice examples are also presented.INTRODUCTIONGravity concentration, one of the oldest mineral beneficiation processes, has evolved over the decades and continues to play an important role in modern mineral processing operations. The development and growth of froth flotation in the early part of the twentieth century led to a decline in the importance of gravity concentration. However, gravity concentration continued to be used for ores that are difficult to beneficiate using froth flotation; such as tin, tungsten, niobium/tantalum, iron, industrial minerals and oxidized coal. In recent decades, many operations have begun to employ a combination of both gravity concentration and froth flotation Since flotation relies on surface chemistry and gravity concentration relies on specific gravity differences, putting these techniques in series provides today’s metallurgist with unprecedented opportunities to maximize grade and recovery of many of these minerals."

USE of a hydrometallurgical approach to the oxidation of sulfide ores and extraction of metals therefrom may have advantages over the more common smelting techniques when a low grade deposit is difficult to concentrate or the subsequent separation of metals, coexisting in the ore, is laborious by any known smelting operation. For economic reasons, the most promising oxidants are either atmospheric oxygen or electric power. The use of oxygen, or air under pressure, has recently been revised. Pyrrhotite has been converted to iron oxide and elementary sulfur' and a variety of sulfides have been treated by Forward and co-workers.2-4 Generally sulfate is the end form of the sulfur but with galena in an acid medium, elementary sulfur can be formed." For economic reasons chlorine and ferric iron salts are about the only possible alternatives to the atmosphere as oxidizing agents for base metal sulfides. If aqueous solutions of chlorine or ferric iron are employed, the reduction products can be oxidized electrolytically in situ and used again, thus acting as catalysts for electric power as oxidant. The use of ferric salts for this purpose is established hydrometallurgical practicea but, although chlorine gas has been employed in the dry state at an elevated temperature, its use in aqueous solution at or near room temperature has not found favor. The reaction of chlorine water with the soluble sulfide ion has been studied by several workers,7-9 and both sulfate and elemental sulfur are found as end products, the latter being favored by the presence of a low concentration of oxidant relative to that of sulfide in solutions of about pH 9 to 10. Of direct bearing on the work in hand are an early American patent" and a recent Austrian patent." The former advocates stirring powdered ore with an aqueous solution of ferric chloride chlorine oxides and chlorine. In the latter it is claimed that both metal and sulfur can be obtained by electrolysis, in a diaphragm cell, of a metal ore slurry in brine. Details in these patents are scant and no data or explanation is given for the mechanism of the reaction which, in the Austrian work, is attributed to the (unlikely) action of nascent chlorine at the anode surface. No mention is made of possible differences in behaviour between various ores. Apparatus A complication encountered when working with chlorine water is that a serious loss of chlorine occurs by gas partitioning unless an enclosed system is used and any air space in the apparatus is kept very small and constant. Arrangements were made, therefore, to take out samples for analysis without letting air into the system to replace the liquid removed. For convenience in studying a heterogeneous reaction the apparatus was so designed that a reproducible controlled stirring rate could be maintained and the ratio of surface area of ore to volume of solution was approximately constant throughout any experiment. The apparatus used is shown in Fig. 1. The ground ore was placed in the horizontal cylindrical vessel, A, of about 1 liter capacity, heated by a constant temperature circulating bath pumping water through the concentric jacket, B. By adding chro-mate to this water, an ultraviolet radiation filter effectively surrounded the reaction vessel, greatly reducing any possible photochemical decomposition of chlorine solutions. Stirring was effected by glass paddles, C, attached by an axle to a magnet which was rotated by another powerful Alnico magnet, D, outside the glass end, this magnet being itself rotated by an electric motor electronically controlled to constant speed. Speed could be varied from about 150 to 900 rpm and was measured and held to within 1 pct of a given value. The end of the reaction vessel remote from the stirring magnet was closed by another one-ended glass cylinder, E, connected by thin polyethylene bellows, F, clamped by screw clamps and watertight rubber gaskets to the main vessel. Through E, a glass electrode and calomel electrode projected into the solution and a hypodermic syringe pierced a small bung and allowed acid or alkaline to be added to maintain a constant pH. By pushing the fully extended bellows until the two cylinders touched, from 50 to 100 ml of solution could be forced out through a sintered disk into the three-way tap system, G, either to waste (for flushing purposes) or up into a 10 ml burette where the solution could subsequently be measured out for analysis. The ore samples were introduced at H, the tube being stoppered by a thermometer of —1 to +52ºC range, graduated to 0.1°C intervals. A computerized napping system was developed by the Bureau of Mines to provides procedures for the rapid and inexpensive display of coal reserve data. Mapping system output consists of two types of maps, point distribution and contour (isopleth), which can be produced for data (coal analyses) associated with a point location (outcrop, drill core, or mine samples). These locations can be in the form of latitude and longitude or Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) grid coordinates. The mapping area can range in extent from as small as a single county to as large as a multistate region. The mapping system utilizes programs developed at Harvard University, in addition to several modifications developed by the authors. The primary advantage of this system is that it enables the display of a rapidly changing data base and computerized map generation without the intermediate steps of digitizing and overlaying to produce base maps. The mapping system is applicable to any regional mineral reserve or resource study for which point location data are available. Included are example maps of the distribution of data points and contouring for sulfur content of the Upper Freeport coalbed in this western Pennsylvania demonstration area.

Surface mining of coal is undoubtedly one of the more controversial aspects of the mineral industries today. There is a constant tug between the need for readily available and inexpensive energy supplies and the desire to minimize disturbance to the land. Without a doubt, surface mining severely disturbs the land surface. The duration of this disturbance, from a minimum of a few months to a maximum of infinity, however, is strictly dependent upon the mine operator's willingness to reclaim. Surface mining critics claim that it is impossible to ameliorate the detrimental effects of this mining to insignificance. The more vocal critics, indeed, are calling for complete abolition of surface mining for coal. Thus, they do not believe that it is possible to restore surface- mined land to pre-mining conditions. As a consequence of this position, an adversary relationship has developed between the operators and their critics who, simultaneously, believe they are doing their best for the United States. In a forum of mining experts, there is little need to recount the kind and amount of devastation that can result from poorly reclaimed land. This has been done numerous times, including once 1 by the author. Of particular interest to this paper, though, are the environmental hazards associated with contour strip mining. In addition to the problems of area mining: denudation of vegetation; exposure of toxic spoil; increase of erosion runoff; etc.--contour mining has the very real problem of landslide due to the outslope stacking of overburden. Contour mining is understood to be the extraction of coal from a hillside outcrop such that the resultant pit follows, or nearly follows, an elevation contour. The problem with contour mining as usually practiced is that the spoil from the cut, or the first cut if multiple cuts are made, is placed on the outslope. If this slope is steep, the resulting pile is difficult to stabilize, generally erodes swiftly, and may fail disastrously.

Recent expansion programs have made the Yunkang underground coal mine the number one producer in Shenxi Province. The mine is the newest in the Datong Coal Administration, currently rated at around 3 Mt/a of coal. Located in the Wa Chushi mountain range about 23 km north of the city of Datong, the mine has undergone a series of expansion phases since startup in 1973. Initial design capacity was 1.5 Mt/a and ultimately, production will be brought to an estimated 7.0 Mt/a by 1985, according to mine superintendent Li Jia-zhi. How Coal Occurs The coal, Jurassic in age, occurs in three economically identifiable seams designated No. 2, 3, and 7. Seams are 100-250 m below the surface. Reserves from this economic zone were not quantified, but Superintendent Li indicated that there was enough mapped out to sustain the expanded production rate for over 20 years. Below the Jurassic coal is another possible economic zone, a Permocarboniferous coal lying 400-600 m below the surface. Little development drilling has been conducted to ascertain its potential. The Jurassic beds are relatively flat and coal quality is reportedly one of the best in China. Heat content of the coal runs around 33.5 MJ/kg and the ash content is less than 10%. In some areas, it is less than 7%. Coal preparation is simple and involves a washing and screening separation into four principal size fractions. Washed coal is stored in one of six storage silos, each with 4000-t capacity. Mining the No. 2 Seam Since startup, primary production has been derived from the No. 2 seam. The coal is relatively hard and is topped by a hard cement-like conglomerate. These factors, coupled with an average thickness between 4 to 6 m, precluded the use of conventional longwall techniques, according to mine engineers. In the mining industry, it is common to have data collected in various formats. In an open pit mining operation, at the early stages of exploration samples are obtained from diamond drillholes. During the production stage, samples are collected from blastholes. The last is more numerous but less precise. From a geostatistical view, this dissimilarity has to be considered to integrate the two sources of information. To combine this different data, three methodologies were investigated: simple kriging with local varying mean, cokriging and ordinary kriging. The exhaustive Walker Lake data set was used and it is considered the source to obtain the true grades. Initially, samples were obtained from the exhaustive data set at a regular spacing grid of 20 x 20 meters. Next, samples were obtained again from the exhaustive dataset at a regular spacing of 5 x 5 meters and a relative error of 25% was added. Then, both data were used to estimate blocks using the three methods mentioned. The grade tonnage curves were compared with the true block grade distribution. Moreover, the block misclassification was evaluated. The results showed that ordinary kriging produced estimates closer to the true block grade distribution and reduced the block misclassification.

Salt dome hosted metallic sulfide deposits are the product of a complex evolutionary system involving halokinesis, cap rock development and diagenesis, and the generation, migration, and accumulation of basinal brines and hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons play an important role in: (1) the production of calcite cap rock which hosts some of the metallic sulfide and sulfur concentrations, and (2) the generation of the reduced sulfur available for metallic sulfide precipitation and sulfur formation. Hydrocarbons and related fluids also are involved in the transporta¬tion and remobilization of the metals. Hydrocarbon consumption, in the course of cap rock development and sulfide mineralization at Hockley dome, is estimated to have been 6.4 million barrels of oil or 114 million cubic feet of methane. Mineral textures, including cap-rock banding, sulfide bands in anhydrite, and fine sulfide mineral banding indicate both episodic fluid influx and fluid compositional differences through time. Features such as pyrite "shells" and sphalerite and marcasite hemispheres may have been localized by hydrocarbon droplets and /or bacterial colonies. Marcasite mineralization in shallow strata above and flanking Hockley dome is best developed over the western and southern parts of the dome. This pattern mimics the known distribution of sulfide mineralization, which is dominantly marcasite, in the underlying cap rock. The iron sulfide paragenetic sequence in the sediments is pyritohedral and cubic + pyrithohedral pyrite followed by marcasite which is encrusted by cubic pyrite. Sulfur isotopic averages for the three stages are +20.8, -20.2, and +6.4 per mil, respectively. These values generally coincide with cap rock sulfate (+20 per mil), cap rock hosted metallic sulfides (-20 to +4 per mil), and sulfur in hydrocarbons (+5.8 per mil). Hydrocarbon compositions indicate provincial variations in oil composition and generation history. Long Point and Boling domes, which have an intergrown sulfide-sulfate-sulfur mineral assemblage indicative of mixed reducing-oxidizing environment, contain oils that are less mature than Hockley dome which appears to be more mineralogically segregated. Sterane biomarker compositions of the oils at Hockley, Long Point and Boling domes indicate a local, dominantly terrestrial source. An oil sample from supracap sandstones on the northeast flank of Hockley dome contained over 750 ppm combined Fe, Zn, Pb, and Co, indicating that hydrocarbons are carrying or remobilizing metals. Cap rock calcite and anhydrite also exhibit provincial variations in strontium isotopic ratios. Calcite and anhydrite cap rocks from several sulfide mineralized domes in the Houston diapir province have strontium isotopic ratios that are more radiogenic than Jurassic sea water (>0.7078). A calcite sample within massive sulfides at Winnfield dome also has a high 87Sr/86Sr ratio (0.7085). Variations in strontium isotopic ratios with strontium content indicate the mixing of at least three Sr-bearing fluids in the cap rock environment, one of which may have been the metal carrier. Anhydrite residues from diapiric salt have strontium ratios up to 0.7100, considerably more radiogenic than Jurassic seawater. These high ratios indicate either that salt and anhydrite recrystallized sometime post-Jurassic in the presence of a fluid with a high 87Sr/86Sr ratio, or that they precipitated in the Jurassic from a fluid with a higher 87Sr/86Sr ratio than Jurassic seawater. Salt domes with cap rocks containing metallic sulfides have only been found in basins that have geopressured zones. Waters from geopressured zones in the vicinity of mineralized salt domes have salinities that are two or more times higher and iron and base metal concentrations that are three to one thousand times higher, than geopressured fluids from other parts of the basin.
