The growing production of fly ash with the many attendant problems of economics, disposal and potential uses suggests an urgent need to consider those properties which are basic in its beneficiation. Fly ash is extremely variable and heterogeneous in all respects except its fine size. Because of its production in huge quantities, it becomes significant as a potential raw material. Detailed data are presented describing particle size and shape, density distribution and magnetic characteristics. The major components include combustible residuals, magnetite and silicates. These data are discussed in terms of beneficiation processes and uses, The results of air classification to produce a uniformly fine-sized low combustible product are encouraging. It is proposed that major increases in the future use of fly ash, must involve some form of beneficiation. Both the coal producing industries and the consuming utilities would benefit from increased utilization.

The sedimentary iron ores of Alsace-Lorraine, France have very high phosphorous contents that average 0.7% and are as much as 2.19% P. Ores from the Tucquegnieux and Joeuf mines have been studied by cathodoluminescence microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and electron microprobe analysis in order to fully characterize the mineralogy, size, shape, and distribution of the deleterious phosphate grains. The phosphorous occurs as collophane, a carbonate fluorapatite, in ten morphological forms, most abundantly as microcoprolites, but also as intraclasts, concentric layers, and cortices in ooids, phosphate replaced ooids and bioclasts, phosphatiC shells, fossil infillings and internal molds, fish teeth, phosphatiC laminae, and cements between the goethite ooids. About 95% of the phosphate grains are sufficiently large that relatively fine grinding fol'lowed by reverse flotation would be expected to be effective in significantly diminishing the phosphorous content of the concentrates.

For over 40 years the Institute of Innovative Technology EMAG has specialized in the development of systems and equipment for laboratory and on-line monitoring of coal quality parameters, as well as the implementation of these systems and devices in mines and power stations. Some of these systems, based on advanced radiation detection techniques such as ?-ray backscattering (ALFA-06 and ALFA -06/T systems) or dual energy ?-ray transmission measurement (ALFA-06/2E ash meter), and also the ALFA-06/3E system applying microwave technology for the measurement of moisture, have had numerous applications in Poland. At present, over 100 systems and devices are used in Polish hard and brown coal mines. For over 10 years, EMAG has been specializing in the development of systems and devices, based on natural gamma measurement technology. An on-line ash meter, RODOS and RODOS Ex, based on measurement of natural gamma radioactivity of coal, has been developed and put into operation. This technique has been also used in developing the portable ash meter WALKER and laboratory analyzer GAMMA NATURA. The paper briefly presents features of the above-mentioned devices, their limits and their obtained accuracy, but in particular refers to the laboratory analyzer, GAMMA NATURA, as the first such device in the world, and presents the results of ash and moisture content measurement in hard, brown coals and potassium salts. The possible applications and advantages of the device in coal mines are discussed. The paper also presents the implementation results of the portable ash meter, WALKER, and the on-line ash meter, RODOS, that is used underground in coal mines.

Entry stability in coal mines is dependent on geologic conditions and engineering controls. Most engineering controls in ground control are predictable and standardized for typical geologic conditions. However, geologic anomalies may exist that are difficult to detect with traditional core hole drilling. Borescopes offer a cost-efficient way to gather more geologic data between core holes. Additional data obtained from borescope results provide a clearer picture to enhance detection of hazardous conditions due to geologic anomalies. The equipment, methods, and analysis of borescope results provide geomechanical engineers with a clear understanding of strata behavior and the best information to implement roof control plans and supplemental support to enhance miner safety and health. INTRODUCTION Borescope technology has changed very little since its inception. However, the idea to use borescopes to examine roof strata started with the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1979 with the production of a fiber-optic borescope (FitzSimmons, et al., 1979). The first documented use of a borescope in the coal mining industry began during the 1980s in Australia by researcher John Shepherd. Shepherd’s idea was to use a borescope to collect a series of data points from the roof lithology and compose a geologic cross section. The cross section was then used to identify key features that suggested the beginnings of roof failure. The features Shepherd identified were bedding plane separations in the roof and low angle, extension, and tensile failures. Shepherd also suggested that the borescope findings could be used for geologic mapping for lithological variation, fracture distribution, and determining if supplemental roof support was needed (Shepherd, et al., 1986). In the United States the first publication about borescope usage for coal mine stability assessment was by Su and associates in 1999, who specifically related the combination of using borescope, geophysical, and corehole data to produce geologic hazard maps (Su et al., 1999). This work directly linked the usage of a borescope with the design of supplemental roof support. The use of borescopes in mining was adopted industry wide by the 2000s. Operator case studies were being published using borescopes to aid in supplemental support recommendations and hazard mapping. An Australian study published in 2007 based the optimization of secondary support after each longwall pass on the results of borescope data. The study stated that the borescope was an invaluable tool for understanding roof behavior (Black, et al., 2007). In 2009, a publication by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) took the concept of borescoping one step further. The work centered around creating a roof quality index (RQI) for limestone mines based on borescope data. The RQI attempted to assign a ranking to establish the nature of the roof and its stability (Ellenberger 2009). In theory, this would have been a very useful tool, but the RQI system has not been widely adopted in the industry.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a trenching and sampling project during 1947 on the tungsten-rich granodiorite that outcrops in Henderson Gulch, Montana. During the course of this investigation, interest was attracted to the Sunrise copper-gold mine in metamorphosed limestone in the north slope of the gulch. The mine was examined by S. H. Lorain, Chief, Mining Division, Albany Branch, in May 1948. A trenching and drilling program was recommended to develop a parallel vein indicated by outcrops to lie below the principal productive Queen vein. In the meantime, the Queen Mining Syndicate initiated a trenching program that exposed high-grade lead-copper-silver-gold ore in a nearly vertical vein that strikes N. 600 E. to east. A core-drilling program to develop this vein was initiated in September 1948. This report presents the factual data obtained from the trenching and drilling operations. The Sunrise mine was discovered about 1890. Production has been estimated to be $120,000 in gold from 40,000 tons of ore mined during the period 1892-1903. The tailing from this operation was treated by cyanidation in 1912, with a reported recovery of $3.50 to $4.00 a ton from 15,000 tons of material. Subsequent production of sulfide ore was 7,396 tons treated by smelting, with recovery of 1,569.42 ounces of gold, 10,003 ounces of silver, 352,899 pounds of copper, and 354 pounds of lead.

Boliden's Aitik open pit mine located in northern Sweden, will expand yearly production from 18 to 36 Mt of copper ore during 2010. The expansion includes a new concentrator located 3 km off the pit, two new apron feeder crushers connected to the ore storages and concentrator with conveyors at a total length of 7 km. The concentrator has two lines with autogenous grinding mills and flotation each with a capacity of 18 Mt. Consequently the mine operation has to be expanded. To achieve this, there was several parallel processes ongoing; investments in new equipment, reorganisations, improvement projects in maintenance and productivity. The Aitik 72 project was started to coordinate productivity and mine planning activities. Initially the long-term strategic mine plan called for a total movement of ore and waste to increase from 40 to 72 Mt but has today increased to 89 Mt. Productivity projects have been focused on load and haul activities such as fuel economics (Renstr÷m, 2007), effective utilisation of trucks partly by increasing manning levels, improved dispatch and shovel utilisation focusing on optimal use of loader/truck fleets. The eco-driving projects previously reported have reduced fuel consumption significantly. This project is also a productivity project, as part of the fuel savings comes from minimising idle engine hours due to queues, break-downs, operator shift changes, etc but also from under and overloading. Effective use of truck fleets, ie transport of material, loading and dumping, thus excluding non-productive engine hours has been an essential motivator when deciding the size and number of new trucks required. This has resulted in a reduction of the investment with at least one but maybe two trucks. A third major project was to optimise shovels together with truck fleet by improving short-term, up to two weeks, detailed planning of drilling and shovel activities. Daily scheduled breaks for maintenance as well as planning of shovel utilisation, down to shift level are included in the production plans. KPIs and online production reports, based on real-time monitoring of drill rigs, shovels and trucks, have been an essential tool used regularly to engage and motivate mine production personal and information reporting to management. Several projects have already reached their goals. The projects will continue throughout 2010 to ensure that productivity targets are met.

"Chemical and limited biological monitoring of mine and mill effluents are being used by regulatory agencies to monitor and control discharges to the environment. Amendments to the Federal Fisheries Act may make it mandatory for mines to conduct Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) which will change the emphasis from monitoring effluents to monitoring impacts on receiving waters. The EEM amendments may expand the scope of present environmental studies to include: effluent mixing zone delineation; inventory and classification of resource, habitat, and historical receiving environment; effluent quality determination; chronic and acute bioassay testing; tissue analysis; benthic invertebrate monitoring; fish population surveying; fish tainting evaluation; and the evaluation of impacts on fish habitat, invertebrate communities and fisheries resources. The requirements for EEM have not yet been worked out by the mining industry and the government committee. Experience at Lakefield Research in conducting biological monitoring studies for the mining industry has shown that biological monitoring may be useful for assessing environmental impacts only if programs are planned and executed to collect relevant data, thus minimizing costs and maximizing effectiveness.IntroductionThe chemical monitoring of effluents and water bodies receiving effluents is common practice in the Canadian mining industry and has been used routinely by regulatory agencies to control discharges to the environment. Biological monitoring has also been used on a limited basis, primarily to augment chemical data collected. A number of regulatory bodies, primarily in Canada and the United States, have been incorporating biological monitoring into environmental regulations.Various forms of biological monitoring techniques have been used in Canada and the United States to help assess the impact of mining operations and effluents on the environment. Biological monitoring includes a wide range of activities, from monitoring metal uptake in individual organisms to examining the population dynamics in ecosystems. The most commonly employed biological monitoring techniques are the chronic lethality toxicity tests. Also becoming widely used are in situ and chronic toxicity tests."

In recent years, heap leaching of gold is becoming wide spread due to low capital and operational costs that allows economically feasible processing of low-grade and cut-off grade ores. Currently, over 30 heap leach projects are operated in Russia. Some of the deposits treated by heap leach methods are almost depleted. Therefore, they will soon require spent heaps detoxification and reclamation. Traditionally, spent heaps are detoxified by chemical treatment. This process is characterized by relatively high kinetics and requires expensive reagents and additional equipment. The main disadvantage of this process is secondary contamination of the solutions by products of detoxification reactions and impurities contained in reagents. If there is enough time, spent heaps can be detoxified by natural degradation. The advantages of the proposed method are low operational costs due to use of existing heap leaching facilities and eliminating the need for chemicals for spent heaps detoxification. Residual concentrations of cyanides and thyocyanates in liquid phase (wet ore) of spent gold ore heaps after detoxification were 0.2~0.3 mg/L. Heavy metals were almost completely removed. The method was successfully used for detoxification of spent heaps at two gold mines.

To develop a reliable, remotely-controlled, mobile roof support to eliminate the need to set posts, cribs, or props while extracting coal pillars. Approach The primary danger during pillar extraction is premature caving of the mine roof. The roof must cave predictably and dependably to ensure the safety of miners. Support during retreat mining is usually obtained by setting posts, cribs, props, roof bolts, or a combination of these devices. These are set manually by miners in the working area. To help minimize the danger to mine workers and to equipment posed by premature falls, the Bureau of Mines developed the mobile roof support (MRS) system to secure the roof during pillar extraction. How It Works The Mobile Roof Support (MRS) is eight-feet-wide, ten-feet-long and five-feet-high, with twelve inches of ground clearance. It is ruggedly built and exerts less than 20 psi ground pressure. The MRS is powered by a 40-hp, 460-v AC permissible motor. The reversible, variable tram speed is 80 ft/min on a 20-percent grade. It is tire-mounted, has a trailing cable, and is remotely controlled either by a radio or a tether communication cable. The machine carries four 50-ton jacks which serve as props for working heights from seven to fifteen feet. Two jacks are chassis-mounted and two are on swing arms. Each jack has a cap which distributes the roof load to three paints. The swing jacks form a breaker row to stop falling roof and prevent caving Into the work area. One jack has a visual load indicator and a second is wired to the machine lighting system. Blinking lights indicate when the preset loading is being exceeded. In the case of excessive loads, an ability to remotely jettison either or both swing jacks has been incorporated into the system to permit removal of the MRS while the roof is still supported.

An extensive design phase testing program in which 10 piles and 2 drilled shafts were instrumented and statically load tested to failure, was undertaken to establish relevant foundation design parameters for two bridges in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. The bearing strata at both test sites was a calcareous, overconsolidated, firm to very stiff, slightly sandy, clayey silt (locally known as Cooper Marl). Confirmation dynamic and static loading tests on production piles indicated only 50 to 60% of anticipated pile capacities; including consideration of time effects. Supplemental subsurface explorations did not reveal any significant variations in marl properties. Ultimately, 22 static and 75 dynamic tests were performed on production piles for a 2 mile section of the project. Pore water pressures in the marl were also monitored during and after pile driving. A study of unit skin friction in the marl as a function of time revealed two distinct trends: piles driven in areas with a sand overlaying the marl gained more capacity significantly faster than those driven through a clay or silt. Although the insitu marl properties are apparently similar across the site, the material immediately above the marl evidently has a large effect on pile capacity. This effect of overburden on pile capacity was verified by testing piles over a period of two years.

"In order to obtain reproducible and reproducible results in batch flotation, researchers have tried various approaches, from normalized testing, to modifying existing cells, and even designing new machines. The paper reviews the basic concepts that must be fulfilled in a laboratory flotation machine, and present the FLOTOMATEC design, which results from five years of testing and development. In addition to providing accurate measurements of air flowrate, power consumption, agitation speed, the cell eliminates most operator induced errors. Results of experiments comparing FLOTOMATEC to a conventional cell, as well as reproducibility tests are given. Introduction The use of batch flotation machines in mineral processing research and development is very common. These machines have been used for many years without almost any change in their design, instrumentation or automation. Various authors since Raffinot (1960) have criticized the available designs, especially with respect to the large errors that are introduced by the manual mode of operation. Barbery et al. To mining people who have experienced the tremendous expansion of existing operations and the development of new properties over the last several years we do not have to point out the difficulties in hiring skilled equipment operators. To those of you who have opened operations in some of the more remote places in the world this is not just a difficulty. It is an impossibility. Your only recourse has been to try and train whatever manpower has been available. Depending upon your success in training, the next problem has been to keep them. On todays modern equipment, the skill of the operator remains as the greatest single variable affecting the performance of the machine. On a blast hole drill, for example, a skilled operator will get good production footage, acceptable bit life and minimal machine downtime The unskilled operator will not only fail to get the acceptable production footage but all too frequently this failure is coupled with low bit life, high repair costs and excessive machine downtime. Even between experienced operators, on identical machines, in the same kind of material we find significant variations in performance. It is, therefore, the skill of the operator, not just his experience, which makes the difference. The problem, as presented to us by our customers, has been to find a way for the unskilled man, with minimal training, to match the performance of the most skilled and experienced operator. The obvious answer is automation.

"INTRODUCTION Santiago de Chile is a 7 million inhabitant city which has a 103 Km long subway network operated since 1975 by Metro S.A. This network is used on a daily basis by 2.3 million people. In 2012 Metro S.A. started the biggest enlargement of the network in its history, through the design and construction of the new Line 3 (21.7 Km) and Line 6 (16.5 Km). The detailed engineering contract for civil underground works of Line 6 (L6) was awarded to the Consortium integrated by ZAÑARTU Ingenieros Consultores and GEOCONTROL S.A., in which Geocontrol was in charge of the design of 11 stations and 14.5 Km of tunnel. L6 crosses L3 in Ñuble and Ñuñoa Station, L2 at Franklin Station and ends, intersecting L1, at Los Leones Station as shown in Figure 1. LOS LEONES STATION DESIGN Location and Characteristics Los Leones Station is placed at the North end of the L6, next to the same named station of the L1 and it has four construction units, as is shown in Figure 2: I. Access Shaft (49 m x 47 m). II. Access Gallery (34 m long). III. Station Tunnel (120 m long). IV. Connection Gallery with L1 (104 m long). A singular feature of Los Leones is that the western section of the station tunnel, built from the access gallery, is located below an underground parking lot which is located in Providencia Avenue, as shown in Figure 3. It is important to highlight that the distance between the vault of Los Leones Station Tunnel and the foundations of the underground parking lot is only 6 m."

High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) is efficient equipment in comminution process. HPGR could be a good option for preparing ball mill feed at the first stage of grinding due to its high efficiency and low energy consumption. Closing with a screen, these mills are utilizing as one of the principle parts in mineral processing industries, especially for iron ores. Recently, HPGRs are working as primary mills at 4 developing lines in Gol-e-Gohar Iron Ore Processing Complex, Iran. Different mechanism of particle crushing in compare to the other tumbling mills makes the HPGR as certain equipment with its own particular controlling parameters. Hydraulic pressure, roller speed and level of material inside feeding hopper are the most important variables influencing grinding efficiency of the HPGR. To figure out how they impress the process and operation situation, different industrial tests were carried out and the best result (d80 about 8 mm for HPGR discharge) was achieved at 180-190 bar pressure (P), 300 rpm speed (S) and 50% of hopper level (L). It is worth noting that this finding has been observed through past pilot test too. We also used design expert method (DX7 software) to develop the best design and analysis the test results, as well. According to the mechanical restriction of HPGR and process limitation in the plant (based on the industrial results), we adjusted value of each parameter in a logical range. Therefore, 20 industrial tests were conducted, as DX7 recommended, and the various impacts of the parameters and their interaction were identified based on statistical analysis. As the authors expected, it was revealed that after presser, roller speed is a critical variable because of its significant role in residence time of the particles between the rollers. The function below has been determined to explain the relation between different parameters and the response.

Exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) and the postural requirements of the job have been identified as important risk factors in the development of musculoskeletal disorders of the back among workers exposed to a vibratory environment. This paper focuses on preliminary results of WBV data collected for two groups of haulage trucks ? four older trucks from manufacturer A (MFR-A) and two newer trucks from manufacturer B (MFR-B). All of the trucks and their respective seats were considered to be in good working order during the study. Measurement periods for the truck groups had similarities, but varied from 2 to 58 minutes. Sampling times for the older trucks included a mean of 19.5 minutes and a standard deviation (STD) of 6.5 minutes compared to a mean of 40.8 minutes and a STD of 12.1 minutes for the newer trucks. Data collection coincided with the approximate delivery and first operation of the new trucks, and occurred approximately 12 months apart under similar weather and road conditions, and with the same drivers except an additional driver was included with the older trucks. Truck routes were somewhat different in that quarry production had changed location in the time between data collection activities. Overall, the results suggest that the newer trucks may provide better overall isolation to drivers/operators from WBV exposure compared to the older trucks operating at the quarry; although, this will need to be confirmed with additional measurements. Considering the higher variability and shorter sampling times for the older trucks, the results should be viewed with caution. For two of seven trials, the older trucks showed that seats amplified vibration, i.e., a transmissibility (T) >1.0. Seat T for the older trucks ranged from 0.31 to 1.17 with a mean of 0.77 and STD of 0.32. This contrasted with the newer haulage trucks where seats amplified vibration in 3 of 8 trials. In this case, T did not vary greatly and ranged from 0.87 to 1.05 with a mean of 0.97 and STD of 0.07. Regarding older trucks, in five of seven trials, the seat (output) data of weighted root-mean square (RMS) acceleration (wRMSZ) for the dominant z-axis exceeded the action level of 0.5 m/s2 action level recommended by the European Union Good Practice Guide for WBV (EUGPG) and levels exceeded the recommended exposure limit of 1.15 m/s2 in two of the seven trials. The wRMSZ values for the older trucks varied from 0.41 to 1.83 m/s2 with a mean of 0.99 and STD of 0.57. Similarly, newer trucks indicated a narrower range of wRMSZ from 0.38 to 0.95 m/s2. The mean wRMSZ was lower for the newer trucks at 0.58 m/s2 with a STD of 0.23 m/s2. Similarly, newer trucks indicated wRMSZ reached or exceeded the action level in four of eight trials. None of the trials with the new trucks showed wRMSZ levels that reached or exceeded the recommended 1.15 m/s2 exposure limit. As an indicator of driver/operator discomfort, overall weighted total RMS acceleration (vector sum) values seem to show a ?rougher? ride for the older trucks. The vector sum values for these trucks ranged widely from 0.70 to 2.59 m/s2 and, in four of seven trials, showed levels greater than 1.40 m/s2. The mean vector sum was 1.44 m/s2 with a STD of 0.75 m/s2. Comparatively, the newer trucks exhibited less variation with a range from 0.69 to 1.59 m/s2. The mean vector sum was 1.02 m/s2 with a STD of 0.35 m/s2. Vibration dose values for the dominant z-axis (VDVZ), gave a sense of vehicle jarring/jolting conditions. All trials with the older trucks were within the recommended EUGPG action level of 9.1 m/s1.75. On the other hand, in three of eight trials, both newer trucks exceeded this action level with values of 9.18, 12.58, and 13.21 m/s1.75. Neither truck group showed VDVZ that exceeded the exposure limit of 21 m/s1.75. A statistical analysis was not conducted, since the differences reported between truck groups may not be statistically significant owing to the relatively small sample size. Road conditions, changes in the truck routes, and driver/operator differences (e.g., stopping and turning) are possible factors in the higher VDV for the newer trucks.

This paper introduces the technical characteristics, transformation scheme and production practice of the project in which Copper P-S Converter was replaced by Bottom Blowing Continuous converting for the first time, and introduces the technical achievements obtained by the project. The application practice proves that bottom blowing copper continuous converting technology can completely solve the problems of fugitive off-gas pollution in the ladle transportation, large amount of flue gas and fluctuation of flue gas caused by P-S converting. Comprehensive energy consumption and operating costs of producing blister copper, safety and environmental risks are greatly reduced, and economic, environmental and social benefits are significant. It is one of the preferred technologies for upgrade and to replace P-S converting technology. INTRODUCTION At present, more than 80% of copper production capacity is still using the P-S converting technology with a history of more than 100 years. During P-S converting process, melted copper matte needs to be transported by ladle, and it needs to rotate the furnace body several times, causing a lot of serious environmental and safety risks such as SO2 flue gas emission and low-altitude SO2 pollution. In addition, the high operating cost caused by low rate of air blowing, the short life of the refractory materials and high energy consumption during P-S converting become big problems. Other problems such as large amount of flue gas, low SO2 concentration, large fluctuation of flue gas volume and SO2 concentration, and discontinuous flue gas cause high cost of subsequent flue gas treatment are also needing to be solved. In order to solve these problems during the P-S converting, metallurgical engineer in various countries has spared a lot of efforts to develop continuous blowing process for decades. In situ or pre-mining horizontal stresses are arguably the least well understood of the principal inputs into underground coal mining geotechnical engineering design, whether analytical, empirical, or numerical. This is a direct result of both the cost and difficulty of obtaining meaningful stress measurements, the various limitations of the measurement method in terms of sourcing strata types that approximate the assumed conditions of the post-measurement mathematics to convert measured strains into stresses, and a common practice by some geotechnical professionals to preferentially utilise generic values rather than interrogate the available measurement data for cause and effect relationships between horizontal stress magnitudes, directions and a range of associated controls. That numerical modelling simulations attempt to mimic reality but often rely on simplified generic horizontal stress input assumptions is a particular cause for further consideratio The paper attempts to further explore the nature of in situ horizontal stresses using a range of stress measurement results from the Australian coal sector supplemented by several international studies addressing the same basic issue, the result being a number of credible and highly relevant “cause and effect" inter-relationships between the three principal in situ stresses in addition to the influence of rock properties (e. Young's Modulus and Poisson's Ratio), cover depth and the larger-scale structural geological environment. In particular, the paper demonstrates that despite being commonly overlooked as a primary rock/coal material property, Poisson's Ratio and the associated K Effect are intrinsic to understanding 3D in situ stress measurement results and therefore, predicting in situ stress magni- tudes more generally for geotechnical analyses purposes. As a fundamental question, the paper addresses whether it is necessary and of engineering value to characterise in situ horizontal stresses: according to distinct "domains," in the same way that more easily identifiable geotechnical properties such as rock mass ratings, coal seam thickness, ply splits, and cover depth are often treated.

Various Australian and international regulatory bodies (Environmental Protection Authority, 2015) require an early assessment of the geochemistry of waste rock. This usually includes estimates of the locations and volumes of potentially acid forming (PAF) materials and requires sampling of the waste rock zones as well as submitting the samples for a series of tests. We know that the required number of samples will vary depending on rock type, mean sulfur levels and spatial variability of sulfur as well as total volume. The theory of productivity is relatively simple, and various models are available to demonstrate this. The problem is how to apply the theory in practice and to convert it into a practical management system that will guarantee results. The secret lies in a management approach that aims at a continuous improvement in achievement and that involves the entire work force down to the lowest level in the process. Good management systems ensuring the necessary attention to, among others, management by objectives, finance, personnel, maintenance, planning, and control are a prerequisite for continued improvement and staff involvement. The net result of such an approach is described by the term performance management, which encompasses the total integration of al a company's management systems.

"Bubble size in flotation is strongly influenced by frother concentration in the pulp liquor. There is no accepted method of judging the dosage and thus how effectively frother is being distributed to control bubble size is not known. This will hamper certain plant test work where constant bubble size (e.g., when comparing reagents) is implicit. Bubble size is not easy to measure in plant and gas holdup is suggested as a surrogate in the development of a proposed “meter” to estimate frother concentration. The meter is calibrated to enable frother concentration to be estimated on samples drawn from any location in the flotation circuit. The meter and its calibration are described.As general background the action of frothers in reducing bubble size by retarding coalescence is discussed and the bubble generation systems for which the effect will be important are considered.INTRODUCTIONBubble size is an important variable in flotation. The flotation rate constant k has been related to mean bubble size Db by k % Db -n with n ranging up to 2 (Ahmed and Jameson, 1989) and even 3 (Yoon, 1993). Recent work has introduced k % Sb, the bubble surface area flux, given by Sb = 6 Jg / Db (where Jg is the superficial gas velocity or volumetric gas rate per unit cell cross-sectional area), i.e., n = 1 (Gorain et al., 1998). Regardless of the exact value of n, the significance of bubble size in flotation remains. In many plant trials it will be implicit that bubble size has not changed and attention will focus on other process variables. The measurement of bubble size, or a surrogate, would be useful addition to any test work.The size of the bubbles is influenced by several variables, gas rate, gas injection system (e.g., impeller design and rotation speed in a mechanical cell) and pulp composition (chemicals added, percent solids), but the most important is frother concentration (Harris, 1976). The frother functions by retarding coalescence (see appendix), which acts to preserve the small bubbles generated in the pulp (and permits a stable froth to form on top of the pulp). The measurement of bubble size is thus related to measuring frother concentration. The distribution of frother and whether sufficient (to control bubble size) is reaching the intended parts of the circuit then become important considerations. At present there is no simple way to judge frother concentration in a plant. In this communication we introduce a possible methodology, a “frother concentration meter”."
