This section of Minerals and Materials analyzes the following three factors affecting the recent performance of the U.S. and world mineral industries: 1) the health of the U.S. and world economies, 2) the level of interest rates and 3) the performance of productivity in both the U.S. mineral industry and the general economy. While these indicators do not exhaust the possible critical factors, they represent an initial attempt to probe some of the considerations underlying the performance of the U.S. minerals and materials industry. The U.S. and World Economies It is essential to analyze the state of the U.S. and world economy because the demand for minerals and materials is a derived demand; that is, since minerals and materials are used in the productive process, the demand for them is a direct function of the demand for the finished products of which they are a basic input. Thus, the demand for minerals and materials is directly affected by changes in present and planned consumption and investment expenditures. The past two issues of this publication have highlighted the generally discouraging performance of the national and inter-national economies. Briefly, the world economy is in the third year of the first long recession in recent history where inflation rates have remained above 5 percent. With many countries either unable or unwilling to support domestic spending while inflation continues, there has been a growing tendency to institute trade-restrictive policies to support domestic demand. The resulting weakened demand conditions in exporting nations have had a direct effect on the mineral industry.

First of all let me say what a genuine pleasure it is to be here. Acapulco certainly is a beautiful change. I'm going to spend sometime talking about change, because frankly I'm astounded at the rate of change in our world today. One good example of this, reminds me that the first time I spoke before the AIME two years ago, we were at the Ramada Inn in Beckley, West Virginia. Today we're at the Princess Hotel in Acapulco, Mexico. Now that's what I call a change. Seriously though, I'm sure you've all heard it said that the most consistent thing about our society is its constant change. Five years ago, no one could have predicted the changes we experienced in the United States during the first half of the 1970's. In the past twenty-four months alone, we have seen two presidents, three vice-presidents and hundreds of administration and government personnel changes. We have stumbled from one social crisis to another, while suffering through rising inflation, major energy shortages and labor unrest that could plunge us into a full scale economic depression. In view of these constant and unpredictable changes around us, it's obvious that we must learn to deal with change and "roll with the punches" if we are to survive. A controversial book published recently, explores in detail the various aspects of change and its impact on man.

Throughout the minerals industry, it is evident that a new wave of technological innovation is needed as the mining sector looks for ways to achieve higher security and safety as well as higher production rates with less investment. Innovation has always been one of the key factors in achieving success within the mining industry. However, its importance will be especially relevant in the coming years if negative trends in commodity prices and new challenges facing the industry (lower grades, deeper mines and economy of scales) are to be overcome and the future sustainability and profitability of the sector ensured.The drive towards fully autonomous operations has begun, with the implementation of automated systems in both surface and underground operations. However, these automated systems are currently planned and realised with well-defined automated tasks within structured environments and isolated spaces. Currently, there is no interaction between automated systems, manned systems or humans, which creates physically isolated environments.For fully autonomous and continuous operations, the automated systems need to operate in environments that enable flexible interactions between automated machines, tele- and manually operated machines and humans.In this paper, we address the automation paradigm considering the synergistic collaboration between humans and automated systems. In this paradigm, humans and machines would interact in a flexible, collaborative and synergistic way without the need for isolation. The implementation of this concept within mining operations will have to be underpinned by science and technological developments and will require adaptation from many fields, including robotics, automation, distributed systems, communication, human factors, pattern recognition and mine design.The paper also presents the research and development work being undertaken at the University of Chile’s Advanced Mining Technology Center, in collaboration with the Chilean mining industry. The Australian states of New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland, because of their endowment of black coal resources, dominate the production and export statistics for Australian coal. NSW produced 86 million tonnes of saleable coal in 1994, representing a doubling of output since 1980, or a growth of 5% per annum. Asian demand for thermal and coking coal has, of course, driven this growth in NSW. This high Asian demand is forecast to continue and NSW will seek to secure its share. This paper focuses on some of the issues facing NSW in the future, and in particular, examines some of the major new and proposed mining projects.

McArthur River Mine, in the Gulf Country of the Northern Territory, exploits one of worldÆs largest deposits of zinc, lead and silver. It was officially opened in September 1995, 40 years after its discovery in 1955. This paper describes the geological, engineering and metallurgical assessments which made up the feasibility study. It then relates how these study components compare with the first two years of operation. The challenges that had to be overcome before the McArthur River Mine became economically viable included the metallurgical problems associated with extremely fine grained ore and the development of an effective mining process.

Determining the correct combination of mix components and water for high-density paste backfills with the transport and deposition properties necessary in a mining operation is a difficult task. Rheologic properties cannot be determined without conducting full-scale pumping tests, and data from existing tests are very limited. The following presents the findings of investigations undertaken to determine if paste backfill rheology can be determined using existing techniques and which mix and system variables have the greatest influence on transport pressure loss. Data from lab-oratory-scale pumping tests were used to produce a rheologic model of flow behavior for comparison, and a statistical analysis was conducted to determine the most significant factors affecting transport pressure loss.

Quartz deposits are common in nature but the presence of quartz suitable for yielding high purity quartz is exceedingly rare. This paper describes a test work study on producing high purity quartz (HPQ) product to meet the tight product specifications of greater than 99.97per cent, including four and even five nines, for uses including, lighting and fibre optics and modern-day high efficiency solar panels. Due to demand in renewable energy applications the market for high purity silica solar panels known for their increasing efficiency and durability is rapidly growing. Demand continues to rise for the use of high purity quartz in semiconductors, electronics, imaging and sensor markets. Microelectronic components are created by chemically fabricating wafers of semiconductors such as silicon to obtain the desired transport of electrical charge and control of the current. The production of silicon metal from high purity quartz has been designated a Strategic Mineral by the European Commission and by the US Department of Justice due to the growing significance of this metal in various industries. The subsequent processing of quartz is the key step to adding value and aiding technological advances. Overall, the high purity quartz market is a highly secretive, specialised market with increasing opportunities for stakeholders. The attempt to produce HPQ in this work was carried out using an Australian quartz ore following a typical HPQ process flow sheet. The unit processes included primary crushing, scrubbing, magnetic separation, flotation, acid leaching followed by hot chlorination. The results indicate that grinding of quartz requires specialist equipment due to the hardness and extreme abrasiveness of the ore leading to additional iron contamination in the ground ore. The critical impurities were aluminium, iron, sodium, potassium, lithium, titanium, zircon, calcium and magnesium. The chemical refining was found effective. The hot chlorination process needed to be done at 1200°C in a chlorine – hydrogen chloride gas atmosphere. The risk of any gas being released during this stage is very serious and only specialist companies should and can carry out this step. More recent studies reported many new options that appear to facilitate the production of HPQ with the requisite purities more easily, but costly equipment along with highly trained operators are required and hence unlikely to become available in standard metallurgical laboratories any time soon.

Classification of mineral resource estimates is one of the most important responsibilities of the Competent Person. In recent years, classification decisions have been driven more by the detailed block-by-block attributes generated by the now widely applied geostatistical estimation methods, and less by a general geological overview. This is increasingly resulting in æspotted dogÆ outputs, in which blocks of Inferred Resources or unclassified material separate blocks of Measured and/or Indicated Resources, or individual drill holes are surrounded by annuli of Measured and Indicated Resource blocks. Not only are such outputs potentially misleading, since they ignore fundamentals such as continuity of geology and mineralisation between drill holes and the imprecise nature of resource estimation, they can also cause substantial problems for engineers undertaking mine designs and estimating ore reserves, particularly for underground mines. Competent Persons for mineral resources must keep in mind the purpose of their work, and should use their experience and judgement to avoid or smooth out æspotted dogÆ classifications, providing a result commensurate with the level of geological and resource estimation confidence. For their part, ore reserve Competent Persons must understand the resource estimation and classification process, and should question resource classifications that are not consistent with the level of geological and resource estimation confidence.

The ever changing conditions in the coal-mining industry and the increasing competition of other fuels such as oil, natural gas, wood refuse, etc., have made it imperative that the coal operator be in a position to supply a constantly uniform and clean product. The old idea of putting on the market "anything so long as it's black" no longer holds good. Today's users of fuel have to consider the amount of heat per dollar they obtain from the fuel they buy. Burning of coal has become largely mechanical, at least so far as industrial coal is concerned, and industrial coal is the kind the bituminous operator is for the most part called upon to supply. When we get into things mechanical, the matter of precision has a mighty bearing on efficiency. Precision in coal means standardization of quality, or uniformity of preparation in size and also in ash and moisture content. The trend of coal mining is ever towards more and more mechanization. Mechanization means coal-cutting machinery, loading machinery, conveying machinery, etc. Although such methods cut the cost, the cleanliness of coal so mined and loaded is not controllable to the same extent as when each operation is by hand labour. The operator has therefore the problem of mining his coal as cheaply as possible, but at the same time preparing a product which will to the utmost satisfy his customer. The answer is a mechanical cleaning plant. Before installing a cleaning plant, however, the operator must take into consideration the cleansability of the coal from his particular mine. This is accomplished by taking representative samples of the seam or seams to be treated, and subjecting these to screen tests, followed by float and sink tests on each size product. From these tests, it can be readily found to what degree of cleanliness the several sizes can be prepared advantageously, and also what will be the percentage recovery of cleaned coal. The accompanying tables give the results of representative tests on Michel coals of minus-2-inch size. All coal over 2-inc.h was intended to be hand cleaned. The coal-cleaning plants in general use at the present time come under two broad classifications, namely, wet and dry.

"A gold bearing concentrate containing 107 g/T of gold, 9.3% copper and 706 ppm of mercury was processed at the demonstration scale for the extraction of gold and copper using a cyanide free process. The concentrate was generated through flotation to upgrade the gold and copper grade, but also showed contamination with mercury. This concentrate was submitted to the DST process demonstration plant. The concentrate was first oxidized using a fluidized bed to produce a calcine. The mercury was volatilized during the oxidation stage with an efficiency higher than 98%. The mercury was condensed and removed from the sulfuric acid using a thiosulphate process. Copper was extracted from the calcine as copper sulphate using diluted sulfuric acid. The solid remaining after acid leaching was submitted to the DST chlorination process for gold extraction. Under optimized conditions, a gold extraction of 97.3% was achieved in the chlorination reactor. Gold was recovered from the pregnant brine by precipitation on silica using a DST proprietary process.INTRODUCTION Dundee Sustainable Technologies Inc. (DST) offers proprietary metallurgical processes for the treatment of material from the mining industry. DST processes enable the extraction of precious metals and for the removal and stabilization of contaminants, such as arsenic, from ores and concentrates. DST provides environmentally-friendly, viable and efficient processes, capable of handling complex and refractory ores which cannot be processed with conventional approaches due to metallurgical issues or environmental considerations. Several mining jurisdictions around the world have banned or restricted the use of cyanide. DST has developed a closed loop chlorination process as an alternative to the conventional cyanidation process for the extraction of precious metals from minerals. The tailings from the process are inert from toxic substances such as cyanide and organic compounds, are sulphide depleted which means they do not generate acid, and thus, meet and/or exceed environmental norms. The process has demonstrated excellent gold recoveries within a fraction of the time needed for cyanidation to obtain similar results. Moreover, the closed loop process does not generate any liquid effluent and does not consume much water: it only requires a water make-up to compensate for moisture leaving with the tailings and by-products, and seawater may be used. The improved environmental footprint of the DST process has been certified by the Environment Technology Validation program (ETV) which provides an independent evaluation of the performance claims of innovative technologies."

"Process mineralogy’ is a form of applied mineralogy which focuses on addressing problems associated with the processing of ores. ‘Mineralogy’ is the scientific study of minerals and ‘mineral processing’ is the production of concentrates from ores. ‘Process mineralogy,’ however can be defined as the practical study of minerals associated with the processing of ores, concentrates and smelter products for the development and optimisation of metallurgical flowsheets, including the waste and environmental management considerations. This hybrid discipline consists of teams that include geologists, mineralogists, samplers, mineral processors and often others, working together. The degree of cross-training, communication and trust dictates the potential capacity of the team and where an appropriate work dynamic is fostered, in which relationships flourish as much as does the ethic of technical excellence, it is possible to develop technical capabilities that surpass those of conventional teams. The world’s demand for metals is ever increasing and ore deposits available for extraction and processing are lower grade and more complex, often containing deleterious elements that require tailored treatment. Generally, in the past, the technical challenges only needed to be overcome and assessed economically to make an ore deposit viable; increasingly and in the future, a more sustainable approach including environmental and societal considerations is needed. Process mineralogical assessment is increasingly providing the critical information that stands between failure or collapse and survival or success of some mining operations. In this paper, selected case studies are used to demonstrate the valuable role of the process mineralogy tools being used to provide the platform for innovative technology development. Their common attributes are discussed and distilled, thus providing some insights and potential guidance for addressing some of the likely future challenges of the mining industry."

Rock falls in coal mines cause many injuries each year. Most of these injuries are not caused by major roof collapses, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate top or roof skin. Even though safety professionals and mine operators strive to reduce these types of injuries, there has not been a substantial decrease in the rock fall injury rate over the past decade. Various surface controls are used in mines to control the roof skin. One control that has proven to be very effective is roof screening. Roof screen effectively controls roof skin and provides a high roof surface coverage. Although many mines are reluctant to use screen for primary skin control because of the additional costs of time and materials, others are having great success at controlling both the costs and surface rock. In this study, injury data are presented that show a dramatic reduction in roof skin injuries when screening is used. Much of this success is due to the protection from falling rock that the operators receive from roof screen. Five case studies in which roof screen was used are presented along with the associated costs of materials, impact on bolting advance rates, and potential ergonomic risks. The effects of roof screening on skin control and safety are also included. Finally, this paper provides information about best practices and features of roof bolting machines that affect production and safety.

MOST extraordinary of the technical developments in placer gold mining during the last five years has been the rise of the dragline dredge, by which is meant a floating washing plant for auriferous gravel, fed by a dragline excavator. The idea originated in the fall of 1933, when Horace Onyett constructed a floating washing plant to which gravel was delivered by a dragline excavator standing on dry land. Onyett's operation near Oroville, Calif., and another started by H. F. England later on Wyandotte Creek, Butte County, Calif., yielded '75 oz. of fine gold before the end of 1933. Although the first operation was abandoned shortly as un- profitable, the dragline-dredge method of gold recovery soon began to expand at a boom rate. As a matter of interest, the Onyett operation was taken over later by Lord and Bishop, who are re- ported to have succeeded in making it the first financially successful drag- line dredge. "IntroductionThe coal deposits, all of lignite rank, of economic interest in Saskatchewan are associated with the Ravenscrag Formation (Paleocene). Several Cretaceous formations have less significant lignite accumulations (Broughton, Irvine and W'hitaker, 1974). The Swan River Group (lower Cretaceous) and Judith River Formation (upper Cretaceous) have the only coalbearing strata in the shallow subsurface of central Saskatchewan. The Swan River Group coalfield is relatively small and underlies only 15 sq km of the surface approximately 40 km south of La Ronge, Saskatchewan. An estimated 36 billion short tons are within 45 m of the surface. No reserve estimates are known to have been calculated for the coal-bearing Judith River Formation exposed at the surface in the vicinity of the South Saskatchewan River valley in west-central Saskatchewan. Although no coalfields have been delineated, lignite beds up to 1.8 m thick have been intersected in test holes. The coal-bearing upper Cretaceous and lower Tertiary strata of the northern Williston Basin extends the full width of southern Saskatchewan for 650 km, and from the United States border 120 km north to 50° latitude (Fig. 1). Only the coalfields of the Ravenscrag Formation, because of their economic interest, will be considered further. There are four major coalfields. They are, from east to west: Estevan, Willow Bunch, Wood Mountain and Shaunavon (Cypress) coalfields. Cumulative lignite seam thickness for each basin is 10 -15 m (Figs. 2 and 3). The origin of each coal basin, resource calculations, seam stratigraphy, and mining activity are discussed. Regional Setting The Williston Basin is an ellipsoidal depression in the Precambrian basement, centered in western North Dakota and marginal to the exposed craton of northern Saskatchewan and central Manitoba (Fig. 1). The sediments of the basin range from Cambrian to Pleistocene in age and have a maximum known thickness of 4614 min western North Dakota. A maximum of 3200 m is recorded in southern Saskatchewan. Most structural deformation is late Cretaceous to early Tertiary (Paleocene) in age, coinciding with the Laramide Orogeny. The pre-Laramide Williston Basin, with a depocenter near Williston, North Dakota, began developing during the middle Ordovician, or possibly earlier."

Total station has been predominantly applied in stationary survey scenarios in construction. With the moving target tracking and point survey automation functions, a robotic total station (RTS) lends itself well to more dynamic applications. Nevertheless, a RTS unit is still unable to track multiple targets simultaneously or to survey a target point when the line-of-sight is temporarily unavailable. In this paper, we propose a methodology to synchronize and automate multiple RTS units intended to address dynamic tracking and surveying applications in the construction field. By using the application programming interface (API) from the manufacturer, we implement the proposed methodology and the prototype system integrates two RTS units in regard to space and time and communicates survey command instructions among RTS units through wireless networks. The two RTS units can be operated to survey the two ends of one swinging sling concurrently in order to retrieve the actual length of the sling within several millimeters accuracy. Besides, in applications where line-of-sight between a target object and one RTS unit cannot be guaranteed all the time, continuous surveying can be materialized by automatically delegating the task to another synchronized RTS unit with clear view of the target object. A field test was conducted to demonstrate the application of the proposed automation approach in which sling length was measured of a rigging framework used for lifting industrial modules. The testing results are presented and achievable accuracy and reliability are discussed. The proposed solution overcomes the limitations of global positioning system (GPS) and laser scanning and holds high potential to provide cost effective solutions to many dynamic field applications.

Checking the quality of a blast may be considered as subjective. Checking this quality will require measuring objective parameters. One of them is the resulting fragmentation of the blasted product. Numerous fragmentation æmeasuringÆ systems have been developed and marketed, based on image-processing. This presentation of FragScan will illustrate advantages and difficulties when using such a system. FragScan is essentially defending a policy of large and representative sampling. The purpose is to show how fragmentation is discriminating both productivity and profit of quarry operations on a blast-by blast basis. The next step will then be to ædriveÆ the blasting process to reach a æbetterÆ fragmentation. Other applications require the fragmentation as an essential result: this is the case for large boulders used in structure-reinforcement. Several case-studies have shown that FragScan can be used for quality-control, checking size-distribution of the product according to the requirements of the end-user. Only clear thinking about the precise use of such a æmeasurementÆ will further the success of this task.

The placement of chemically reactive mine wastes in mined out pits (æpit backfillingÆ) is increasingly seen by industry as best practice to manage long-term environmental risks. This is primarily because leaving wastes at the surface, or allowing pit lakes to develop, can result in unacceptable environmental risks. The costs and practicality of mitigation options such as installation of covers and community expectations of landform re-construction to achieve a post-mining, beneficial land use are also important drivers for pit backfilling.Pit backfilling can significantly reduce the post-closure risks to receiving environments, by minimising seepage due to tailings, acid/solute generating waste rock and/or salts derived from mine water treatment. Environmental risks are often highest where wastes are located close to the ground surface, due to relatively high rates of groundwater movement in near-surface aquifers and/or failure of engineered structures due to rainfall/erosion processes. Placement of these wastes at significant depth in pits, subject to mine planning and environmental assessment, can address these risks by increasing the path length and resistance from contaminant source to receptor, thus enhancing encapsulation of the wastes.Pit backfilling can also be cost-effective for mining companies. This is because existing pits are developed on the basis of an economic return and thus provide an opportunity to store tailings in an existing æengineered structureÆ at little or no incremental cost when compared with building and operating a new tailings or waste rock storage facility, often encompassing complex cover/drainage management systems. Key issues for consideration are mine planning, the long-term geotechnical behaviour of the wastes (eg consolidation of tailings which leads to release of acid/solutes in tailings porewaters), seepage rates to downstream receptors/agreed end point criteria and potential resource sterilisation. Internationally, mine closure guidelines are also showing a greater recognition of pit backfilling in the context of allowing mining companies to meet agreed post-closure land use objectives.In summary, pit backfilling can enhance the encapsulation of chemically reactive mine wastes and environment protection, and with agreement on post-closure beneficial land use, can also help to deliver post-closure benefits to communities.CITATION:Puhalovich, A A, 2012. "Cable bolts are an important support component in modern underground mines. If an optimized cable bolt system is to be achieved, it is insufficient to focus on cable bolt layout design or on cable bolt installation in isolation. Cable bolt support, like all engineered systems, requires a holistic approach, encompassing integrated elements of design, implementation and verification. The “Cable bolting Cycle” described in this paper incorporates these components along with related tools and procedures which should be used together to ensure effective and efficient cable bolt support.Design involves the consideration of demand, capacity and constraints as outlined in this paper. The demands imposed on the sup-port system by the rock mass response to excavation under the combined action of stress and gravity must be matched to the capacity of the cable bolt array. The cable bolt system capacity is a function of the component strengths of the steel strand and the bond (load transfer) and by the deformation response and retention characteristics of the system. The design is bounded by operational and economic constraints.Implementation of the cable bolt array can then proceed and must include appropriate protocols of communication, training and quality control, in addition to both general and site specific installation procedures. "Wear resistant 25% Cr hard cast iron is a heterogeneous material containing 1,600 HV hard chromium carbides embedded into martensitic matrix. It is the most used cast alloy in wear operations of mining industry, chemical industry, fracking, etc. During the last decade the hard iron manufacturers increased wear resistance in the following ways: • Reduce / eliminate harmful retained austenite and chromium + carbon depleted areas especially within eutectic carbide cells. In Max5A the improved 25% Cr alloy brittle carbide eutectic cells are removed which increases toughness. • Delay delamination between chromium carbides and matrix particularly during sliding abrasion wear. Delamination commences at the weakest chromium carbide – matrix contact lines exposing chromium carbide to localized bending stresses which gradually chip carbides away. Once the chromium carbide base is removed accelerated wear degradation occurs. • Evenly randomize and avoid discontinuities in the chromium carbide network. When chromium carbides are perpendicularly positioned to the wear surface wear rate is minimized. On the contrary the highest wear rate takes place when 3D oriented chromium carbides are parallel with the wear surface. In this case chromium carbides cover top network discontinuities being just matrix supported which leads to rapid carbide cracking. The new hard iron discussed in this paper fulfils and exceeds the above requirements increasing the casting service life around 250% in various wear operations. Physical and mechanical properties of Max5A are compared with well manufactured Industry Standard 25% Cr hard iron. The paper presents practical accomplishments obtained in the USA, South America and India. INTRODUCTION The chemical composition of Max5A and Industry Standard 25% Cr are identical like specified by ASTM A532 Class III Type A requesting C = 2.0-3.3% and Cr = 23.0-30.0%. Manganese, silicon, nickel, molybdenum and copper contents are limited by maximum accepted quantities.[1] According to published data the eutectic chromium carbides chemical composition of 25% Cr hard iron is Cr = 54% and C = 8% which indicates strong depletion of chromium and carbon along chromium carbide - matrix interfaces. [2] The optimized Max5A microstructure has minimized retained austenite, is devoid of harmful carbide eutectic cells and has the most advantageous chromium carbide and secondary chromium carbide morphology. This favorable microstructure increases wear resistance, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The paper compares the Max5A microscopic features and mechanical – physical properties with similar properties of high quality Industry Standard 25% Cr."

"The Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust (GTCRD) was created at The Pennsylvania State University and West Virginia University by a congressional initiative in 1983 responding to recommendations in the 1980 National Academy of Sciences study on the Measurement and Control of Dust in Mines. Many of these recommendations dealt with the need to initiate focused fundamental research for further professional progress in dust control. Long-term, sustained support was emphasized to develop expertise in respirable dust research. In creating this Center, Penn State and West Virginia University were specifically recognized for their expertise in and facilities for research on coal mining and medicine. Today, the Center includes the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Minnesota, and the Michigan Technology University. The Respirable Dust Center is the only organization that coordinates and integrates the medical, scientific, and engineering aspects of respirable dust disease. The Center works with the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), and the U.S. coal industry in defining the research priorities for the programs of the Center to enhance research synergism.The Center's mission is to enhance the health, safety and productivity of miners by advancing the fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling and the interaction of dust and lungs to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease.All Dust Center activities are focused to be responsive to this mission, which is shared by the several federal agencies closely associated with the GTCRD. While significant progress has made mine atmospheres cleaner and healthier, respirable dust-related disease remains the nation's most pernicious industrial hazard.The goals of the GTCRD were formulated with recognition of the diverse scientific, engineering, and medical aspects of respirable dust, in addition to a need to enhance researcher interaction, as well as education and technology transfer efforts, in the respirable dust area. These goals reflect the needs of the mining industry as determined by the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Measurement and Control of Respirable Dust study done in 1980. The report of this committee encouraged the Bureau of Mines to redirect its research efforts ""...toward obtaining fundamental understanding of the origin, transport and characteristics of respirable coal mine dust."" The GTCRD's goals, detailed in chapter three of this document, were formulated to mesh with NAS recommendations."
