In responding to mine fires and explosions, accurate and timely analysis of the mine atmosphere is critical in making decisions regarding firefighting, mine rescue and mine recovery operations. For many years instantaneous analyses were available to rescue workers using handheld or portable gas detection equipment, including infrared, electrochemical, or catalytic measuring devices for a limited number of specific gases such as oxygen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Instantaneous sensing technology is not available for all gases, such as nitrogen and hydrocarbons, found in a mine fire atmosphere and cross-sensitivity can be a problem with this technology. For these reasons, air samples are collected for injection into a gas chromatograph for a complete and accurate analysis for all gases including oxygen, nitrogen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, as well as ?fire gases? such as hydrogen, ethylene, ethane, and acetylene. This method requires additional time for transporting the samples to the laboratory near the mine, as well as an instrument operator to inject the samples for analysis. The use of a portable micro gas chromatograph with a continuous and automatic injection system has been implemented by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) during mine recovery operations. The device directly samples the mine atmosphere from an underground location every twelve minutes and automatically analyzes the samples for all of the mine fire gases. The portable unit utilizes micro technology and the operating software has been modified to perform the calculation of sample results in and Excel® spreadsheet without user interaction. This paper describes the micro gas chromatograph system and its use at a recent mine recovery operation. The automated remote operation of the micro gas chromatograph has been shown to be a good alternative to infrared and electrochemical sensors used for mine atmosphere analysis.

Many hydraulic backfills are deposited at low density and provide less than optimum support strength to stope walls. This laboratory study shove that fill strength can be considerably increased. Placement methods used to increase the fill strength were the head, vibratory, cementation, double-planed (dblplod), and combinations of these methods. An experimental facility van designed to study the placement cathode and resultant strengths of the fills. Physical property tests made on the fills included laboratory penetration and vane shear plus several supplementary tests, such as grain size distribution and relative density. Test results were compared to fills planed by conventional methods and to those results reported by other investigators. When compared to fills placed by conventional methods, the penetration modulus was increased by 4.3 tines when the uncemented-vibrated-head concept was used and 71 times when the cemented-vibrated-head-dblplod concept was used. Apparently, hydraulically fill strength can be substantially increased. Conceptual mining plans are also included on suggested ways of placing and using high-modulus backfills.

While underground coal technology has progressed over time, regulations on coal dust have not kept up ? the most recent rules are more than 80 years old. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration conducted a joint survey recently on coal particle ranges as measured in US coal mine samples. In underground coal mines, dust explosions are prevented by the addition of enough rock dust (usually limestone) to make the total dust mixture inert. The rock dust acts as a heat sink for the dispersed dust mixture by reducing the temperature below the value needed to propagate an explosion. Federal regulations require 65% in combustible content in intake airways and 80% incombustible content in return airways, where the coal dust is assumed to be finer in size. The regulations also require an additional 1% incombustible for each 0.1% methane in the ventilating air in intakes and 0.4% additional incombustible for each 0.1% methane in returns.

One of the most urgent needs in the field of coal combustion is the ability to predict the performance of a coal from knowledge gained from small-scale tests. Numerous types of analyses and tests are conducted on coal, including the proximate and ultimate analyses, heating value, varieties of sulphur, ash analysis, ash fusion temperatures, free swelling index, petrographic analysis, and Gieseler plasticity. The Illinois Geological Survey has made an intensive study of the value of these tests for judging the performance characteristics of the coal as actually utilized. To date, three reports 1 2 3 have been is- sued, and another is being prepared. The present paper briefly summarizes some of the results found in the studies.

Mine planning at Cassiar consists of an annual cycle of projection, control, evaluation and revision following completion of annual diamond drilling during the summer months . The inherent difficulty in evaluating fibre grade and distribution, combined with a high-wall phase or push-back mining system, requires continuous modification to designs and schedules based on a cumulative evaluation of equipment performance and prediction versus production. To expedite the planning sequence, a mini-computer system has been introduced which allows emphasis to be placed on optimizing designs, exempting personnel from manual calculations and tabulations.

The study of ultrasonic-wave propagation in substances has been remarkably advanced in recent years in most engineering and science fields. The main object in studying the velocity of ultrasonic-wave propagation in solids, is to determine dynamic properties of these materials. The present paper, however, presents some other possible applications of ultrasonic-wave propagation in the study of rock mechanics as follows: Investigation of the mechanism of microseismic activites of geologic materials, (a) at initial or low stress level, (b) at final or fracture stress level, and (c) under fatigue loading condition. Also, correlations among stress level, density, and the velocity of ultrasonic-wave propagation in rocks are discussed in this paper.

The aim of this investigation was to determine whether the composition of a shielded-metal arc-welding electrode coating affected the low-temperature impact toughness of austenitic stainless-steel weld metal. It is generally accepted that increases in the δ-ferrite and nitrogen contents result in a decrease in toughness at low temperatures. Weld metal from electrodes with a basic coating also generally exhibit better toughness than those from rutile (acidic) electrodes. An increase in basicity was expected to decrease the number and size of inclusions, which in turn provides a tougher weld metal. Three commonly available potassium–rutile E308L electrodes were used, complying with the E308L-16 and E308L-17 specifications. Analysis of the electrode coatings showed very similar chemistry and basicity. Significant differences in the inclusion contents of the weld metals were observed: the E308L-17 weld metal had a lower inclusion content (1.4% by volume) than the E308L-16 weld metal (3.7%). The former had higher impact toughness at all temperatures, despite a slightly higher nitrogen content. Regression analysis confirmed that the inclusion content had a significant effect on the impact toughness at all temperatures.

Thanks to strong industry support and longstanding partnerships, the University of Arizona has provided extensive pre-college mining education and outreach for more than a decade. These efforts to promote mining-related degree programs and the wide variety of indemand career opportunities reach thousands of middle and high school students and hundreds of teachers every year. The School of Mining Engineering & Mineral Resources is constantly looking at ways to help students overcome barriers into degree programs. But competition among degree programs for talent is fierce, and outreach has not made a big enough difference in the number of students pursuing mining engineering degrees. With workforce shortages threatening to undermine the industry, more is needed. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates 500 new mining engineering jobs each year, and according to a study by Deloitte (2023) nearly 50 percent of skilled engineers will reach retirement age in the next decade. At the same time, the 14 accredited mining or mineral engineering degree programs in the United States are producing fewer than 200 graduates annually (Society of Mining Professors and Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration, 2021). To better understand mining’s competitive position, the School of Mining Engineering & Mineral Resources conducted a comprehensive study to determine (1) how prospective college students, parents and educators perceive the industry, related careers and the mining engineering degree, (2) factors affecting students’ choices of degrees and career plans and (3) the roles parents and educators play and how they influence students. This article is the first of two installments to discuss the results. This installment focuses on what students, parents and educators think about mining and where they get those impressions, as well as the role parents and educators play in influencing students’ choices of careers and degrees. The second installment, scheduled for publication in a later issue of Mining Engineering, looks at what students are seeking in their degrees and careers, and how mining compares with other degrees and industries.

The mechanism involved in creating a miscible fluid displacement of typical reservoir fluids through porous media by light hydrocarbon mixtures usually involves a number of mixing and separation stages in the contact area. This mechanism has been illustrated on ternary diagrams for miscible displacement of reservoir fluid by rich hydrocarbon gases. A relatively simple method has been devised for calculating the approximate conditions for a miscible displacement of reservoir fluid by rich, light hydrocarbon gases or by LPG mixtures. Miscibility is favored by increased pressures, decreased temperatures, light reservoir fluids and light hydrocarbon-displacing fluids rich in the heavier components. The conditions for miscible displacements of five typical reservoir fluids by various light hydrocarbon mixtures were determined for a range of temperatures from 70" to 260°F and pressures from 1,000 to 3,000 psia. A correlation of these conditions was obtained using the variables of temperature, pressure, C,+ molecular weight of the reservoir fluid, C,+ molecular weight of the displacing fluid, and mol per cent methane in the displacing fluid. This correlation has been applied to data appearing in the literature with very good success. A partial check of the correlation has been made using a step-wise procedure with a windowed PVT cell. INTRODUCTION The term, "miscible fluid displacement", may be defined as any oil-recovery displacement process where there is an absence of a phase boundary or interface between the displaced and displacing fluids. A water flood would not be a miscible fluid displacement, although cycling in a condensate reservoir would be. Another example is displacement of oil by gasoline. Not so obvious, however, are the conditions under which fluids (such as propane, mixtures of propane and methane, or other similar systems) will give a miscible fluid displacement of oil. There are four standard miscible-fluid-displacement processes being used for the recovery of oil from an "nderground reservoir—(1) high-pressure dry-gas miscible displacement, (2) rich-gas miscible displacement, (3) miscible slug using a slug of LPG followed by a lean dry gas under miscible conditions, and (4) gas driven-slug process using a slug of LPG followed by a lean dry gas under immiscible conditions. The first problem faced by the engineer designing a miscible displacement process is to determine the conditions for miscibility. A number of papers have included discussions of the process of obtaining miscibility in these processes.1-8 However, methods for calculating the conditions for miscibility have not been published. This paper includes a method for calculating the conditions for a miscible displacement of reservoir fluid by a rich gas (LPG diluted with methane or natural gas). In this paper, a rich-gas miscible displacement process is defined as an oil-recovery process in the reservoir. The cost of a rich-gas miscible displacement will be decreased by diluting the LPG with methane or natural gas as much as possible. Therefore, it is important to be able to predict the maximum dilution for miscibility. MECHANISMS The mechanisms for obtaining miscibility between a displacing mixture of light hydrocarbons and displaced reservoir fluid often involve a number of displacing and mixing stages. As stated previously, the cost of a rich-gas miscible displacement is decreased by diluting available LPG with natural gas. The problem is to predict the maximum dilution allowed while maintaining miscibility. To get a picture of the displacing and mixing stages, it is helpful to consider these complex hydrocarbon mixtures as pseu do-ternary systems. Graphical representation of a complex system as a pseu do-ternary system can be thermodynamically rigorous if enough variables are used to describe the character of each pseudo-component in one of the phases. However, even if the characterization of each pseudo-component is not complete, pseudo-ternary representation does serve to illustrate the mechanism for obtaining miscibility and can be used to make some general conclusions concerning the conditions for obtaining miscibility. Reduction in the time required and improvements in safety during a longwall face move have compelled coal mine operators to examine and use pre-driven longwall recovery rooms. While this concept is not without controversy and risk, the rewards can result in substantial reductions in longwall face move/set-up times and provide safer working conditions. Both of these factors can reduce mining costs and enhance profitability in a competitive market. This project was even more complex because the longwall system operates under a weak roof condition. To examine the feasibility of this concept, a 16-ft wide by 170-ft long experimental pre-driven recovery room was designed using analytical, empirical and 3-dimensional finite element modeling techniques. Based on the projected loading conditions, immediate and main roof geological and strength characteristics, a variety of roof bolt types were selected and installed in the recovery room and adjacent chutes. To supplement the intrinsic supports, high-capacity roof-to¬floor cuttable cribs were strategically placed to reduce the potential of a weighting failure before the longwall shields safely entered the room. To evaluate the behavior and final support performance, the recovery room and chutes were instrumented to monitor the physical response during various loading phases. Additionally, the cuttable cribs were instrumented to evaluate the loading and stiffness characteristics during the extraction process. This paper describes the successful design process, support methodology, monitoring results, final observations and recommendations.

The Konkola Deep Mining Project (KDMP) seeks to exploit the deep level potential of the Konkola Deeps orebody, producing high grade copper concentrates for treatment at the Nkana Smelter and Refinery. As an alternative to smelting, Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has examined a processing route involving pressure leaching of the Konkola concentrates at Nchanga, with the leach liquor being treated by solvent extraction and electrowinning to produce high purity copper cathode. The solvent extraction circuit would be operated to achieve a high ?delta? copper, thereby providing a strong acid raffinate which can be used in the existing Tailings Leach Plant (TLP) to treat Nchanga oxide copper materials. The main focus of the hydrometallurgical option is to capitalize upon the synergy that exists between the treatment of sulphide copper concentrates (acid producing) and oxide copper ores (acid consuming). The paper discusses the key features of a comprehensive piloting campaign carried out at Anglo American Research Laboratories, which involved the co-treatment of Konkola copper concentrates and Chingola refractory ore in a fully integrated pilot plant circuit.

Data obtained from mine ventilation pressure and quantity surveys are required to accurately diagnose ventilation problems, project future air quantity needs, and to locate conditions adversely affecting the efficiency of a mine ventilation system. A method for making mine ventilation pressure surveys with aneroid altimeters was presented in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7809, and a description of field calculation technique is presented. This report supplements Information Circular 7809 by developing the information obtained during a mine ventilation pressure survey into a single equation suitable, with appropriate modification, for use with desk-top calculators and digital computers. The equation can be used to calculate the ventilation pres sure from the base station to any underground station, or between any two underground stations, and can be programed for semiautomatic sequential calculation using a desk-top calculator. An example of application to a programed desk-top calculator is provided in the appendix.

Abstract Recent ore pass failures have underlined the need for improved designs, standards, structural mon¬itoring methods and better hang-up prevention and removal tech¬niques. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the Na¬tional Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating methods to improve safety during the transport of ore in ore passes. Design criteria and hang-up prevention and remedia¬tion strategies involve studies of the effects of static and dynamic ore and waste-rock loads on chutes, walls, gates and support structures. Particle flow analysis methods were used to simulate the response of various ore pass designs to a wide range of ore loading condi¬tions. A full-scale mockup of ac¬tual ore pass and chute assemblies was duplicated and tested for load response. Data from a particle flow code and the mock-ups were com¬pared Loads on an active ore pass chute were measured.

DISCOVERY of natural gas in the Dundee field of New York in February, 1930, and the subsequent discovery in Tioga in September of that year, focused the attention of the natural-gas industry on the enormous possibilities of production and distribution in - the most populous area of the United States-New York and New England. Prior to 1926 the natural-gas industry in New York State had settled into a definite and limited policy, with the distributing companies controlling the output from its discovery to the ultimate consumer. Production amounted to between G and 7 thousand mil- lion cubic feet a year, with another 10,000 million feet imported from Pennsylvania for distribution in New York State. This gas was primarily from the Medina sand stone in. the western part of the state.

An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for a major mining development typically has to address various aspects of surface water management, including some which generally tend to be the more contentious: the diversion of rivers and creeks from areas disturbed by mining, and their rehabilitation; the effective management of disturbed area run-off via the collection, containment and treatment of contaminated water on site in sedimentation dams; the collection, containment and treatment of mine pit water; the decommissioning of surface water storages; final void water quality; and water discharge criteria. Environmental Impact Assessment processes for proposed mining developments in Australia at the state and commonwealth level usually involve a form of Initial Advice Statement (or Notice of Intent), Terms of Reference, an EIS, and a Supplementary Report (or similar) which responds to agency and public comment on the EIS. The EIS is used by approval agencies to decide the acceptability of the Project, and to set the conditions of approval. The conditions are often in the form of a state-issued æOperational LicenceÆ or similar. With mining, the initial approval at the EIS stage is often just a pre-cursor to various other planning related approvals, including obtaining a mining lease. Afterwards, mine plans and plans of operations must be submitted to government at various stages of the mineÆs life, ostensibly to provide the detailed mine planning over periods of one û five years. Despite all this additional planning and documentation beyond the submission of the EIS, government approval agencies are increasingly not satisfied with conceptual water management designs and commitments to an outcome (such as meeting a specified water quality standard) in the EIS. Agencies are also requiring sufficient water management design information to be convinced that the outcomes are achievable. To assist proponents of major mining developments, the Queensland Government has published Technical Guidelines for water management, and Environment Australia has published a æBest Practice Environmental Management in MiningÆ booklet on water management. In addition, the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC. 2000) has published Water Quality Guidelines which provide an approach to water management, and provide receiving water investigation trigger criteria. So, what are the water management issues that are likely to be the subject of comment, debate and negotiation prior to the EIS being approved? and what commitments may a mining proponent have to make in order to convince the approval agencies that sufficient investigation and design has been provided? This paper provides some answers to this question, by reference to recent major mining proposals which the author has managed through state and commonwealth Environmental Impact Assessment processes.

"DEFINITION OF THE REGION AND ITS BOUNDARIESTHE REGION of Western Canada covered by this re-port lies between the Precambrian rocks of the Canadian Shield and the structurally deformed rocks of the eastern Cordillera, extending northward from the international border to the 60th parallel. It is some 487,000 square miles in area, with a total sedimentary fill of about 535,000 cubic miles0>. It includes parts of the prairie provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta and the northeast corner of British Columbia and forms part of the geological region known as the Interior Platform, commonly referred to as the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. The bedrock comprises carbonates and evaporites of Paleozoic age that lie on Precambrian crystalline rocks and are over-lain by a relatively thick blanket of Mesozoic and Tertiary elastic rocks. The nearly flat-lying bedrock, covered by a thick mantle of glacial drift, forms the Interior Plains physiographic province."

While there is no immediate worldwide shortage of hard minerals, the consumption of natural resources is constantly increasing, and there are ominous predictions of shortages to come. Means of meeting rapidly increasing demands are being implemented. These include such methods as exploration and discovery of new ore bodies, development of new mines, increasing production at existing mines, working or reopening known deposits of lower grade ore and tailings, recycling old materials, and developing more efficient and less wasteful processes to convert ores and metals into useful products. The United States, although itself mineral-rich, depends in large measure on imports for many key minerals and basic materials derived therefrom. According to the Department of the Interior, the U. S. depends upon imports for more than half of its supply of six of the basic thirteen raw materials required by any industrialized society - aluminum, chromium, manganese, nickel, tin, and zinc. By 1985 the country will also depend upon imports for more than half of its iron and tungsten, and by the year 2000 imports will have to supply more than half of the copper, potassium, and sulfur that it requires.

"INTRODUCTION Contrary to popular belief, Arizona State Trust land is not public land. All uses of the land must benefit the Trust, a fact that is considered with the review of each application received for sale, lease, or permit. This includes applications for activities ranging from commercial development to recreation. In 1863, the Territory of Arizona was established by an act of Congress. This act reserved sections 16 and 36 in each township to be held in trust for the benefit of the common schools. Later, the Enabling Act of 1910 allowed the Territory of Arizona to prepare for statehood. This act reserved the additional sections 2 and 32 of each township for the common schools and granted another 2,350,000 acres to be held in trust for other beneficiaries. In all, Congress granted the State of Arizona almost 11 million acres. The State was to manage those lands and maximize revenue for 13 separate beneficiaries. To meet this mandate, the State established the Arizona State Land Department (ASLD) in 1915. During fiscal year 2015, the ASLD contributed $136 million to the permanent fund, bringing the total value to over $5.1 billion, through the sale and leasing of the land and natural products which includes minerals. The current inventory of State Trust lands includes 9.2 million acres representing about 12.7% of the State.The ASLD Minerals Section manages the exploration, development, and leasing of mineral products on State Trust land. We are not a regulatory agency, but a department guided by our fiduciary responsibilities to the Trust. Our mineral programs include: Exploration Permits, Mineral Leases, Mineral Material Leases, Geothermal Leases, Oil & Gas Leases, and Special Land Use Permits. INDUSTRIAL MINERALS ON ARIZONA STATE TRUST LAND Industrial minerals fall under the category of either Mineral or Mineral Materials Leases. Common industrial minerals found on Arizona State Trust land include potash, limestone, gypsum, salt, specialty clays, zeolites, crushed stone, and sand and gravel."
