"Hecla Limited has been investigating the potential benefits of using a Spendrup/Compact Filter Technic (CFT) diesel filtration system to remove diesel particulate matter (DPM) from the mine atmosphere to optimize use of the available air. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has evaluated the scrubber efficiency for dust and DPM which is to be presented in another report. This paper reports on a new mining application of a carbon particulate sensor’s ability to continuously monitor long-term mine DPM levels in conjunction with the scrubber evaluation. Magee Scientific is the manufacturer of the Aethalometer®, a continuous black carbon monitor which has been used extensively in worldwide ambient air quality monitoring networks. Two Aethalometers were used at the mine to assess their potential to continuously track underground DPM levels. In this first underground mine application, the Aethalometers were used to continually monitor black carbon (BC) in the intake and exhaust of the CFT scrubber system. Results showed that an off-the-shelf Model AE33 Aethalometer could continually track underground BC levels for extended periods of time over the course of the six-week trial. Data at the scrubber intake over 14 days of testing showed that DPM filtration would be required less than half of the time to maintain BC levels below 50 µg/m3. If the Aethalometer BC data output were “smart coupled” to control a 200-HP in-mine scrubber, significant electrical cost savings would be realized. INTRODUCTION Mine ventilation airflow quantities are calculated to maintain a safe and healthy environment for miners. Dilution of diesel particulate matter (DPM) is often a key factor used to determine the required quantities of ventilation air (Bugarski et al. 2011). DPM emissions and exposure levels are highly variable depending on mine schedules and activities (Janisko & Noll 2010); however, lacking technology to continuously monitor levels, mine ventilation systems are often over-designed in order to handle worst-case scenarios to ensure that DPM levels are maintained at or below regulatory limits. As mines go deeper it becomes more difficult to supply air, and the development of new shafts for air is not economically feasible (Basu et al. 2008). Cleaning and reuse of available air then becomes an attractive option to maintain good air quality."

Hydraulic backfill is generally retained in slopes using permeable barricades. Mitchell et a! (1975), Mitchell (1992) and Grice (1989) have shown that under normal drainage conditions, barricades experience low levels of loading. Cowling et a! (1988) have also shown that barricades are susceptible to piping failures if excess water has ponded on the upper backfill surface and if leakage of backfill from the barricades has occurred. During 1997, six hydraulic backfill barricades failed in four different Australian mines. Fortunately, in each case, the quantity of backfill slurry released was small, and no injuries to personnel nor damage occurred. Detailed investigation of two of the incidents showed that the primary cause of failure could be attributed to the delivery of excess quantities of transport water from the low-density slurry. For each of the incidents investigated there was evidence of the development of piping failures, which resulted in hydrostatic loading conditions on the barricades from the ponded water on the upper backfill surface. The circular failure surfaces in the barricades were characteristic of the application of point loading Conditions.

"Syncrude has developed a low energy extraction process for the recovery of bitumen from oil sand. This new process operates at a temperature of 25 °C, resulting in substantially lower energy costs and lower capital costs, especially for the thermal energy generation equipment. The process will be used in Syncrude’s Aurora Mine, which is scheduled for startup in mid 2000. The flowsheet for Low Energy Extraction includes hydraulic transport of oil sand slurry, and bitumen separation using collector and frother chemicals and air as process aids. A number of flow sheet innovations and optimizations have been included, resulting in the next generation of extraction technology. Experimental pilot plant results, engineering progress to date and areas of ongoing work will be discussed. SUMMARYThe Low Energy Extraction Process has been successfully developed for commercial implementation at Aurora. The 1996 100 tonne hour Field Pilot demonstrated that the bitumen recovery target could be met with an 11.1% grade oil sand. However, pilot plant bitumen recoveries for a lower grade oil sand were not acceptable. The subsequent flowsheet optimization study led to a new flowsheet for Low Energy Extraction, which includes a primary separation vessel, a flotation circuit for PSV middlings, and the use of middlings displacement in the PSV cone bottom with flotation underflow. A test program conducted in 1997 showed that the new flowsheet could significantly improve the bitumen recoveries for lower grade oil sands. Engineering work on process scale-up led to selection of a 30 meter diameter PSV, with a tangential feedwell. The successful development and commercialization of Low Energy Extraction for the Aurora Mine Project is a major enabling step in the Syncrude 21 program. The low energy requirements of this process allow Syncrude to develop the Aurora leases more cost effectively. The use of this process results in major capital cost savings, predominantly in the thermal energy infrastructure and also provides long term operating cost advantages for Syncrude."

"Prior to 2003, most high rise structures in Honolulu, Hawaii were supported on driven pile foundations, extending through shallow coral strata and bearing in competent formations at depths of 100 ft (30 m) or greater. In 2003, the 40-story Hokua Tower became the first building in Hawaii to use continuous flight auger (CFA) piles for support. These piles derived most of their capacity from side shear in the shallow coral formations, which reduced their required lengths to less than 100 ft (30 m) sand significantly increased their capacity. Not only did CFA piles prove to be more efficient and cost-effective than driven piles, but the reduced noise and vibration associated with their installation made them and drilled piers the foundations of choice for most mid- to high-rise projects going forward. Because drilled foundations were new to Hawaii, it was necessary to develop effective design parameters for the unique soil and rock conditions found within this urban area. While drilled foundations were found to have many advantages over driven piles, construction techniques had to be modified to compensate for extensive voids in the coral formations. This paper presents a compendium of the data derived from numerous full scale, instrumented load tests conducted during the past decade and provides guidance for the design and installation of CFA and drilled pier foundation systems in areas having geologic settings and history similar to that of Honolulu.INTRODUCTIONThe State of Hawaii is one of the most remote areas in the world, lying nearly 2400 miles (3800 km) from the nearest continental land mass. In spite of this vast distance, the population of the islands has grown to over 1 million people, the majority of whom live within and in close proximity to the City of Honolulu on the Island of Oahu. The city is densely populated with over 400 high rise apartments, condominiums, hotels and office buildings located within 5 miles (8 km) of the city center (Fig.1). Nearly all of these buildings have been constructed within the past 50 years."

Statistics for copper consumption from various sources show that the importance of production from secondary sources is increasing. This is of particular significance in countries such as the U.K ., which are totally dependent on secondary material for the supply of home-produced copper . A brief survey of the U.K . industry has shown that, in the past, relatively high profit margins have not encouraged high cap ital investment and development of more sophisticated operating techniques, but set against a background of rapidly escalating operating and energy costs , together with an ever-increasing demand for copper , it is anticipated that the industry will see great changes in the near future. With this in mind, an experimental furnace for continuous smelting of copper-bearing scrap has been developed at the University of Birmingham. This furnace has been designed to combine the conventional operations of blast furnace or reverberatory smelting, usually followed by converting, in one unit, and incorporates many of the features of the WORGRA and Noranda processes for continuous primary smelting . It consists of a long, sloping channel, constructed of chrome-magnesite refractory, which: is churned near the top. Smelting is effected lower down the channel, where iron, etc., in the scrap is oxidized and slagged off with silica flux. Provision is made for oil injection to increase oxidation rates. Metal can flow from the bottom of the channel, and slag from the top, so that a counter-current flow is achieved. The approximate molten capacity is 25 kg. Various scrap charges, both synthetically made and as supplied from various industrial smelters, have been successfully smelted. Metal of 83 -95 % Cu has been produced, depending on the original charge composition and the degree of air injection, although air injection was also found to considerably increase the copper loss to slag. Recoveries of other valuable non-ferrous metals in the charge were good.

Shotcrete is a versatile and widely utilized rock support material in mining and civil engineering projects due to its adaptability, strength, and efficient application. It immediately stabilizes rock surfaces, effectively controlling loose materials and preventing rockfalls in underground excavations. This paper focuses on assessing and analyzing data from observations of nozzlemen (shotcrete sprayers) during primary ground support activities in an underground mine. The study highlights the importance of nozzlemen’s skills in ensuring the quality of shotcrete application, which is critical for underground mining operations’ structural integrity and safety. A comprehensive training program and field support were implemented to enhance the nozzlemen’s proficiency. The training set covered theoretical knowledge and practical techniques to improve shotcrete application daily. Proficiency improvement was assessed using quantitative metrics, with rebound percentages decreasing by 5–14% as nozzleman competency increased. The results of this initiative showed significant improvements in shotcrete quality, including increased efficiency, reduced waste, and fewer reworks or rehabilitations. The findings aim to contribute to a broader understanding of best practices in shotcrete application and nozzlemen training, ultimately enhancing ground support application measures in the mining industry.

"Construction of the drilled shafts for the Brightman Street Bridge Replacement Project were not only challenging due to working over the water but were also challenged by changed soil conditions, concurrent work being performed by an adjacent contractor on the same project, environmental restrictions and severe winter conditions. A total of 36 x 8 foot (2.44m) diameter drilled shafts with 7.5 foot (2.31m) rock sockets were installed for the East and West bascule piers. This project also included Osterberg Cell load testing on two production drilled shafts at both the East and West bascule piers. The results from the load test program were used to fine tune the design of the drilled shaft rock sockets. From a constructability standpoint the reverse circulation drilling method with a pile top drill rig proved to be an excellent choice for drilling the overburden and rock sockets of the large diameter deep drilled shafts. INTRODUCTIONThe replacement Brightman Street Bridge spans the Taunton River between Fall River and Somerset in Massachusetts.The new crossing is located approximately 1500 feet (450m) upstream from the existing Brightman Street Bridge, which was built in 1908. The new mainline bridge includes nine spans totaling 1725 feet (525m). A bascule type moveable span will be located in the middle of the Taunton River and provide a 200 foot (61m) open channel centered about the 400 foot (122m) navigational channel. The bascule span, which has a span length of 409 feet (124.7m), will be a trunnion-type four leaf structure with a solid deck. A site plan is shown in Figure 1 Contract 3, which includes construction of the foundations for the East and West bascule piers, was bid on December 19, 2000 and was awarded to Modern Continental Construction Company (MCC) on January 24, 2001. MCC in turn awarded the subcontract for the installation of the drilled shafts to TREVIICOS Corporation, which started mobilizing in June of 2001.The scope of work for the drilled shafts of Contract 3 consisted in installing 18 drilled shafts in three rows on each side of the river to support the bascule piers located in the middle of the Taunton River.The foundation plan for the bascule span is shown in Figure 2."

The Bureau of Mines estimated reclamation costs for 13 surface coal mines in nine States west of the Missisisppi River. With the exception of the Pacific Coast coal province, at least one mine in each of the western coal provinces was studied. Cost estimates were, made using standard estimating procedures from data obtained from company records, interviews with industry personnel, and onsite observations. Estimated costs are presented in four categories which represent the four phases of mined-land reclamation: (1) Design, engineering, and overhead; (2) bond and permit fees; (3) backfilling and grading; and (4) revegetation. Estimated costs as of the first quarter of 1976 are expressed as averages and ranges in terms of per acre, per ton of coal produced, and per million Btu. Total reclamation costs ranged from $860 to $7,200 per acre, from 6 to 84 cents per ton, and from 4 to 35.3 mills per million Btu. A mine in the Northern Great Plains coal province (Region D) showed the highest per acre cost whereas mines in part of the western region of the Interior coal province (Region A) experienced the greatest per ton and per million Btu cost. The high cost of reclamation in the Western United States is reflected in the backfill in and grading category, particularly in the cost of topsoil removal and subsequent replacement as required by individual State reclamation regulations.

"This paper is the sequel to that on Developments in Sintering Efficiency delivered by Davies and Mitchell at the International Ore Dressing Congress, Stockholm, 1957. Attention is drawn to the fundamental concept of sintering as a heat transfer process, in which the ignition heat is continually transferred onward through the bed as a heat wave. By its passage, this heat initiates endothermic 'changes, such as carbonate decomposition, whose energy requirements are supplied by the combustion of the fuel contained in the bed.Ideally, the heat wave should be generated by the ignition hood followed by the pre-heating of the incoming air. The fuel content of the bed should be no more than the theoretical quantity needed to balance the endothermic changes. In practice, the heat wave is seriously short of energy and this is offset by excess fuel in the bed. As a result, sinter quality suffers, more return .fines are produced, and fuel is wasted, a loss of efficiency which could be avoided if the fundamentals of correct ignition were more widely appreciated.Sintering speed, otherwise heat wave velocity, is a function of the rate at which the incoming air acquires .heat from the cooling sinter and imparts it to the unburned feed below the combustion zone. It is thus a function of rate of air flow and so depends on bed permeability>. Ways of• improving and maintaining permeability at the maximum consistent with thorough sintering are discussed, particular reference being made to taconite concentrates. The possibilities of recrystallizing refractory ores into forms more amenable to physical concentration techniques by sintering are visualised, very little expenditure on heat energy being required when the process is operated near the ideal conditions."

High-purity Bi2O3 was prepared via extraction-preparation stripping method use BiCl3 leaching solution. Parameters such as oxalic acid concentration, phase ration, aging duration, feeding duration, were examined for their effect on the size and morphology of precipitate. The precipitate was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), particle size analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravity analysis (DSC-TGA) and infrared spectroscopy analysis (FT-IR). Bi2O3 was characterized by elements analysis, particle size analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Bi2O3 product of 680 nm was obtained using 15 g/L oxalic acid, 1/1 phase ration, 0 min aging duration, 0 min feeding duration and calcinating at 500 °C for 2 h.

Red mud (RM) is a solid waste product generated during alumina refinery process, and is usually stored in SFs (SFs) because it canÆt be disposed of easily. In this paper, environment degradation caused by RM-SFs was systematically assessed by the method of single factor pollution index based on the analysis data of water, soil and atmosphere sampled around one newly-built and one decommissioned RM-SFs, which are managed by an alumina production company in China. The results revealed that the ambient environment around RM-SFs is seriously polluted by alkali and mercury (Hg). The pH value of RM leachate, surrounding surface water and groundwater are all higher than the limit of water quality standards in China. And as a possible result of overflowing of high alkaline leachate, soil pH value for the decommissioned SF decreases with increasing distance between the sample collection points and the closest side of RM storage facility (RM-SF). Total Hg concentrations in RM leachate, surrounding surface water and groundwater all exceed Grade III limits of ChinaÆs Environment Quality Standards for Surface Water and Groundwater. However, the air quality was little affected as the daily average of TSP in the air is below grade II values of Chinese Ambient Air Quality Standard.CITATION :Wen, Z, Ma, S, Zheng, S and Zhang, Y, 2012. "There's no such thing as quality assurance; only quality control ... by inspection. "(1) A common misunderstanding in the procurement and construction of custom designed, fabricated pressure vessels and piping systems is that quality assurance can be achieved by simply referencing codes, standards, ISO 9002, QMS or other such programs in the contract documents. In the authors' experience, nothing could be further from the truth, not detrimental to the performance of the equipment than the exclusion of inspection activities and reliance upon warranties and "fit-for-purpose" clauses. Likewise, the expectation that fabricators, suppliers, or third party inspectors can provide such assurances is also unrealistic where they have limited knowledge of the process, material selection criteria, or limited technical resources. The development and successful execution of a quality assurance program is a collaborative effort by engineers, designers, material suppliers, equipment fabricators, and field inspectors with the full understanding and support of the end user.This paper presents an outline of the quality control activities undertaken by the authors for several recently completed and on-going hydrometallurgical projects. The activities include: prequalification of fabricators and sub-vendors, shop audits, material validation testing, material source control and verification, positive material identification of weld metal overlay, specialised welding inspection, contamination control for titanium and titanium-clad fabrication, eddy current and mass spectrometer (helium) leak testing of shell-and-tube heat exchangers, hot cycle testing of titanium clad equipment, tolerance verification for refractory lined equipment, final inspection and cleaning.

Approximately 30 million pounds of tungsten trioxide in the form of ferberite concentrates have been shipped from Boulder County. Since 1940, the production has varied considerably, being affected by the emergency needs of World War II and the Korean conflict. During World War II, attempts to stimulate production were made by the Metals Reserve Company by stabilizing the price for a specified period, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation by small mining development loans, and the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey, who cooperatively explored some of the district by surface and underground core drilling. During the Korean conflict and continuing through the first half of 1954) tungsten production was being stimulated by a Government-gauranteed price and by financial assistance loans under the Defense Production Act of 1950 to qualified operators of properties that have merited exploration. This combined program has increased production in Boulder County from about 1,900 pounds in 1949 to an estimated 383,000 pounds of tungsten trioxide in 1953. The 1953 production came from 67 properties. One of the problems confronting producers is the need for improved beneficiaton methods. Ores from the area have not been amenable to flotation concentration and gravity methods have resulted in poor recovery, often less than 70 percent.

The first national survey covering sales of fuel oil by States and principal uses was made in 1926 by E. B. Swanson of the Bureau of Mines (then under the U. S. Department of Commerce) under a cooperative agreement with the American Petroleum Institute. This annual study, covering the market for fuel oil, was made through 1930 with the financial help of the institute bat has since been continued by the Bureau up to the present time. The scope and coverage of the survey have gradually changed over the years as new uses for fuel oil have been found and new products have come into importance resulting in market expansion. Range oil (No. 1 fuel oil or kerosine) came into use for cooking and space-heating daring the depression era in New England, and it was first reported as a total in the 1931 survey. In 1934 the sales were compiled on a State basis. State totals for distillate fuel oil, Diesel fuel, and residual fuel-oil sales were first shown for 1934 and by principal uses and States in 1937. Kerosine deliveries by States and main uses were also released for the first time in 1937.

As a safeguard against excessive clinker troubles, specifications for the purchase of coal can be drawn to include the "softening" or "fusing" temperature of the ash. The value of such information has been recognized by the Bureau of Mines and has induced the bureau to investigab~ laboratory methods of determining the fUSIbility of coal ash, and the bearing of the results on clinker formation in fuel beds. The bureau realized that the fusibility of a mixture of oxides and silicates snch as is comprised in coal ash ,'aries according to the conditions under which tests are made, and that in the absence of any generally accepted method, no agreement is to be expected among tests made in differ«:-nt laboratories. Indeed, Marks a has recently called attention to differences as great as 3900 C. that were obtained with the same sample of ash by two different laboratories. Therefore if a fusion-temperature clause is to have any place in specifications for coal, a standard m('thod of t('sting should be adopted in order to insure comparable results by different laboratories and to obtain the softening or fusing temperature of the ash unde:'r conditions similar to those of a fuel bed. After a consistent method has been devised for obtaining comparable:' results at different laboratories, there will remain the correlation of these results with those from the burning of coal in furnaces before the value of fusibility tests in coal specifications can hE' finally determined.

High-pressure streams of water, known as water jets, can be used to improve the cutting efficiency of mechanical bits. During prior testing by the Bureau of Mines, the cutting performance of a longwall shearer, equipped for water-jet-assisted cutting, was evaluated. The performance of the shearer did not improve while using water jet assist because the pressure of the water delivered to the rock surface was inadequate. The study, described in this report, resulted in a determination of the major cause of water pressure loss on the shearer, and an evaluation of the techniques for increasing the water pressure at the rock surface. The results show that the major pressure loss, which occurred between the nozzle and rock surface, is directly affected by the amount of fluid turbulence that develops just upstream from the nozzle. Preventing a sudden change in the direction of the flow channel can increase the stagnation pressure as much as 400 pct. Smoothing the surface of the flow channel in the shearer bit block would increase the stagnation pressure delivered to the rock surface by 35 pet.

The Bureau of Mines sponsored a study of the impact of changing technology on the demand for metallurgical coal and coke to 1985. Individual technologies were analyzed to determine what effect each had on the demand for and the consequent consumption of metallurgical coal and coke in the steel industry. The domestic steel industry demand for metallurgical coal and coke for the production of hot metal will probably increase through 1985. Formcoke if implemented on a worldwide basis could begin to supplant the U.S. export market for metallurgical coal. The major technologies that have contributed to the decline in demand for metallurgical coke per ton of hot metal are (1) the increased usage coupled with higher iron content of agglomerates, (2) modification of blast furnace practices such as high top pressures and blast temperatures, and (3) increases in the injection of supplemental fuels. The projected demand for metallurgical coal and coke under current technology for 1985 are 109.4 and 76.0 million tons, respectively. With future technology implemented, the demand for metallurgical coal and coke will be 82.0 and 56.9 million tons, respectively. The projected domestic demand for metallurgical coke could further decrease by as much as 15 to 20 million tons by 1985 if formcoking proves technologically and economically feasible.

The north central and northeastern states supply over 50 pct of the chemical and metallurgical limestone produced annually in the United States, and Ontario is the leading source of this material in Canada. About three fourths of the chemical and metallurgical stone produced in this area comes from Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Ontario. The specifications, physical and especially chemical, for chemical and metallurgical stone depend upon the end use, but in general the tolerance for impurities is so low as to rule out most limestones and dolomites. Both high calcium limestone and dolomite are used in the metallurgical and chemical industries. The principal metallurgical use is as a flux in iron ore blast furnaces and open hearth steel furnaces. The major chemical uses are in lime burning and soda-ash manufacture. Other important uses include glass manufacture, in making calcium carbide, and in sugar factories. All deposits of high quality carbonate rock are definitely finite. Invariably and inevitably they diminish in either thickness or quality laterally so as to become unworkable as chemical and metallurgical stone. The size of these high quality lenses ranges from a few thousands of tons to hundreds of millions of tons. The best hunting for new supplies is in the geologic formations known to contain premium quality deposits. However, because of high transportation costs, carbonate rocks, to be workable, must be close to market, dollarwise. Definitions: Chemical stone is limestone or dolomite used as a raw material by the chemical industry. The major chemical uses are in lime burning and soda-ash manufacture. Other important uses include glass manufacture, making calcium carbide, and in sugar factories. The specifications for chemical stone depend entirely upon the end product. Some uses require dolomite, some require high calcium limestone; in a few instances, notably in lime burning, either type of carbonate rock can be used as raw material. As a general rule, a fairly pure stone is necessary and for certain particular uses the tolerance for some elements such as sulfur, iron, and phosphorus may be extremely small. Metallurgical stone is used as a flux in furnace operations, especially in the blast furnace where iron ore is converted into pig iron and in the open hearth furnace where pig iron is made into steel. Either limestone or dolomite can be used in the blast furnace, but only high calcium stone is charged in the open hearth (except for rice-size dolomite used as a refractory). There are no rigid chemical specifications for blast furnace stone, but low silica, alumina, sulfur, and phosphorus are desirable. For open hearth use, in addition to low magnesia, a very low sulfur content is also specified by many furnace operators. For furnace use, fluxstone also must be sufficiently shatter resistant that it will remain in lump form during transport and charging into the furnace. Commercial stone is the term applied in the trade for crushed stone used for roadstone and in concrete aggregate. Many of our best chemical and metallurgical limestones are too soft to qualify in the Los Angeles abrasion test for use as commercial stone. However, some limestones, and a higher proportion of dolomites, do qualify for commercial stone and so can be sold to either market. Place Value: Even the highest grade limestone is still a bulk commodity with a relatively low value per ton. As a matter of fact there is very little difference in the average price per ton between high grade chemical and metallurgical stone and crushed limestone used commercially. Most high quality stone is produced in large operations with consequent low cost per ton whereas most commercial stone is produced in relatively small local quarries. "An expert system application for supervisory control and optimization of the indurating process at the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC) has been developed and installed in closed-loop. Prior to the installation of the expert system, the indurating machine was rebuilt and the instrumentation revamped. A Foxboro I/A Distributed Control System (DCS) was installed for regulatory control, and a new control strategy configured. The modernization of the regulatory control has resulted in significant improvement in both production rate and product quality. Expert system control was implemented in September 1996. Preliminary indications are that the expert system has further improved the consistency of product quality, enhanced fuel efficiency and increased productivity. The expert system considers both wet and dry sections of the circuit, and its optimization scheme is driven by pellet tumble index and compression strength. Statistical Process Control (SPC) rules were implemented in the expert system as part of the quality analysis and control scheme. The expert system application was developed and delivered using the Comdale Expert Optimizer (CEO), and has been in continuous closed-loop control since its installation.
