In the present research a two-cell polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell stack (PEMFCS) with SS-316 bipolar plates has been tested. Different flow field designs were studied and a modified multi-parallel channel design is proposed. The stack is stable within ±3 mV even after 1000 hours of continuous operation, indicating efficient water management and effective removal of any metal ions from the stack. Also no iron is detected in membrane electrode assembly (MEA) by EDAX analysis after 1000 hours of cell operation. Results indicate that high operating pressures beyond 138 kPa didn't significantly increase the performance of cell, however added much to the pressurization cost of the system. Tests at different temperatures showed that at temperatures below 80°C, external humidification could be completely removed. The prototype stack is also tested under variable load conditions simulating highway-driving schedule. The experimental efficiency of PEMFCS is 48%, which is in good agreement with the model predicted efficiency of 53.8 %. Results show that 59% of the total losses are due to ohmic polarization in the cell. Further analysis on applications of the stack in automotive transportation system is in progress.

Patent records show that the idea that the burning of fuels can be improved by mixing or pretreating them with chemicals 6 dates back to the early years of the last century. By 1845, English and French patents included the specific beneficiations of elimination or reduction of smoke, soot, and clinker; reduction of the ashes, presumably meaning the total weight of refuse from the ashpit; elimination of sulphur fumes; increase in the rate of burning; increase in the time a given charge of fuel would last; and, in most patents, a saving of fuel. The earlier patents specified additions up to 80 pounds or more per ton of fuel, but after 1860 the quantity was rarely more than 4 pounds. There is no record of the extent to which these patents were commercialized, but after 1884 many American patents were assigned to companies specializing in treatment of coal, so it is probable that the products were marketed on a considerable scale at least as early as that date. From 1900 on, many companies marketed proprietary products that were sold under the general name of "fuel savers." Since its establishment in 1910, the Bureau of Mines has continually received inquiries about these products and, at the request of other govern-mental departments, has tested some used in accordance with the instructions of the purveyors; the results were all negative and, within the accuracy of measurements, the products had no effect on the burning.

During the last few years, when a new tankhouse or a major modernization has been planned, automatic or semiautomatic crane and grab systems have at least been considered. It seems that in the future tankhouse managers for new, modernized and even old tankhouses will be looking for a proven and reliable system for automatically moving and positioning electrode loads in the tankhouse and in storage areas. In this paper, we will describe the Wenmec solution for automatic electrode handling. The advantages of automatic handling and very accurate electrode positioning will be discussed, and the way Wenmec has solved the problems in mechanical construction and in automatic, accurate and reliable positioning will be presented.

The San Gabriel Valley contains some of the richest and most extensive sand and gravel deposits in California. Operating quarries within the San Gabriel area mine more than 15 million tons of high quality aggregate per year. This represents about 45 percent of the total mined in the greater Los Angeles area, one of the nation's largest aggregate markets and producing regions. Popular opposition to continued aggregate production in the San Gabriel Valley is high, especially in the city of Irwindale where 40 per-cent of the city's property is made up of "excavated holes," some 150-200 feet deep. Reclamation of 70 years of mining is now an almost impossible task. Zoning regulations have the effect of depleting these vast reserves rapidly by changing the definition of total reserves to include only "legally minable reserves." All but two or three of the aggregate mines now operating will be depleted or zoned out of business by the year 2000. Some studies indicate that there will be no aggregate mining operations by 1995. Recent studies show a drastic change in land use patterns within this valuable mineral resource area over the past 20 years. The San Gabriel Valley is a classic example of the lack of adequate regional planning with regard to urban development in MRA's and represents a "too little, too late" effort by local government and industry.

Spray-applied polyurethane foam was used to insulate the walls of heated rooms excavated in permafrost. The experiment was designed to determine whether polyurethane foam can be sprayed successfully on frozen ground under freezing conditions and to measure the effectiveness of the insulation in maintaining--at elevated temperatures for an extended period--a room excavated in frozen ground. Two manufacturers' foams were investigated in the laboratory. Subsequently, one of the foams was employed to insulate two small rooms, one in frozen gravel and one in frozen silt, in an experimental tunnel belonging to the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (USACRREL) near Fairbanks, Alaska. Following insulation, heat was introduced into the two rooms. Heat migration across the insulating barrier into the walls, in addition to wall closures, was monitored over an 8-month period. The results show that polyurethane foam can be successfully sprayed on frozen ground in below-freezing temperatures. Given this type of insulation, together with winter cold to supercool the surrounding ground, it should be possible to maintain a shaft or heated room in permafrost for several years.

A novel electrochemical half-cell and corresponding working electrode were designed to evaluate the electro-catalytic activities of catalysts in an environment close to that of an operating proton exchange or polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEMFC). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques were employed using the novel cell to characterize various methanol electro-oxidation parameters that contribute to the overall reaction on a fuel cell anode. The effect of temperature on methanol oxidation kinetics was examined in the potential range of 0.31 to 0.65V (vs. NHE). The data was collected in the temperature range of 20 to 80°C. Based on the experimental analysis and literature data, an equivalent circuit model (ECM) for methanol oxidation was proposed and was used to fit the EIS experimental data. The experimental data and ECM electrochemical data was used to extract electrochemical kinetic parameters for methanol oxidation such as the exchange current density, Tafel slope, and energy of activation for the reaction. Kinetic data, especially at different temperatures, is very limited in the literature.

The Mineral Park Mine is an open pit copper-molybdenum mine located in northwestern Arizona, approximately 74 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The property has been owned by the Duval Corporation, Cyprus Mining Company and Equatorial Mining of Australia. Mercator purchased Mineral Park from Equatorial in 2003. Mineral Park commissioned a 25,000 tpd copper and molybdenum concentrator in November and December of 2008. The process includes two stage milling (SAG and Two Ball Mills) fed by primary crushed ore. Metals are recovered in a copper-molybdenum flotation circuit consisting of mechanically agitated roughers and cleaners. The copper- molybdenum flotation concentrate is thickened and further processed in the molybdenum flotation circuit which separates the copper and molybdenum minerals into salable concentrates. The molybdenum circuit also uses mechanically agitated cells. This paper describes the plant and some of the highlights of the commissioning process.

This report describes the use of the sprayfan auxiliary ventilation system for methane and dust control on continuous miner sections to potential users. The sprayfan auxiliary ventilation system is a modified water spray system which directs intake air to and across the front of a continuous miner to prevent build up of methane gas and dust concentrations. This user's manual contains practical information concerning sprayfan: a. Description and capabilities b. Design c. Installation d. Operation e. Maintenance. Underground tests, independent laboratory tests, tests by MSHA, and independent installations by coal producers have confirmed the performance of the sprayfan system. There are currently 150 sprayfan systems in operation in underground coal mines.

Noranda's Grey Eagle Mine and Mill, located in the Siskiyou Mountains of Northern California, began shakedown operations in the late fall and early winter of 1982. This paper describes some of the unique features in mining, milling and water treatment operation at Grey Eagle. In addition, major start-up problems in the mill and water treatment plant are discussed along with measures taken to correct these problems.

This paper , which supplements a general circular entitled " Titanium" ( Information Circular 6365 ) , represents a summary of current trade literature and Government reports , together with some hitherto unpublished material that has accumulated in the files of the Bureau of Mines . The purpose of this pamphlet is simply to indicate the commercial possibilities of the deposits , and the discussion is confined almost entirely to the three commercial ores , ilmenite , rutile , and magnetite ( titaniferous iron ore ) .

This volume summarizes mining and petroleum legislation in 45 African jurisdictions. Within these jurisdictions, primary attention is given to requirements that must be met in each country for acquisition of rights to permit development of mineral resources. Coverage includes: First, identification of the controlling laws or statutes governing minerals acquisition and reference to the administrative authority; second, analysis of the laws governing mines and quarries and their products; third, analysis of laws applicable to natural gas, petroleum, and related materials; and fourth, mention of laws regulating offshore operations. Where pertinent, sections dealing with historical background or administration have been added. In countries where minerals are subject to control of states or provinces, those areas are considered separately from the central government.

The construction and modification of tunnels brings a requirement for precise measurement of convergence and divergence to safeguard the structure, maintain safety and provide the assurance needed to maintain efficient progress. Established methods include manual measurement using tape extensometers and automated methods using photogrammetry and automated total stations. Drawbacks include the need for frequent access, power supply, cabling, and cost. The paper describes how the development of reliable optical displacement sensors (ODS) has changed the landscape. ODS sensors are connected to a long-range wireless mesh communications network via a solar-powered gateway outside the tunnel, with data instantly transmitted to the internet. A sensor and its reflector target can be installed in 20 minutes and is maintenance free for a decade. Tunnel movement is measured to sub-millimeter precision with repeatability of ±0.15 mm. Integration of a triaxial tilt sensor allows slope distance to be converted to horizontal and vertical changes and allows rotational movement to be determined. Applications include new-build and long-term structural health monitoring. Case studies will be given, including the refurbishment of rail tunnels in Spain where the ODS measured movement during track lowering in a situation where no other automated system was considered viable.

Coal mine planning has three distinct decision levels: (1) decisions made at the upper level of management that determine production requirements for specific mines, (2) decisions made at the middle management level, the mine level, that determine how the mine satisfies its production requirements, and (3) decisions made at the operating level of management, the sectional level, that determine the sequencing of machine movements at the face. In this paper, the underground production scheduling problem is formulated in multi-stages using the Hierarchical Production Planning (HPP) approach. Two linear programming HPP models for accomplishing decisions at the first two levels are developed. Both models address the aggregate production planning process. The Mine Production Scheduling (MPS) model permits determination of monthly production and inventory levels. The Section Production Scheduling (SPS) model incorporates a quality blending requirement into the determination of weekly sectional production and inventory levels.

"Falling commodity prices and a rising supply surplus have ushered in a period of restraint in capital project investment across the global mining and metals sector. Competition for capital project funding has seen fewer projects progress through investment gates and a stronger focus on projects that deliver gains in capital productivity and strategic outcomes.Over the course of the 2015 financial year, EY conducted a study of 108 projects in the global mining and metals sector (EY analysis; Larsson and Ericsson, 2014; SNL Financial, 2015). The projects studied were at various life cycle stages and related to the development of copper, iron ore, gold, coal, nickel and other commodities. Each individual project investment exceeded US$1 B, and the studied group represented a cumulative investment value of US$367 B.The research found that the majority of projects were delayed and/or over budget when measured against the initial estimates made during the early stages of the project life cycle. Of the surveyed projects, 69 per cent were identified as facing cost overruns with an average overrun of 62 per cent above the initial estimate and 50 per cent reported schedule delays, even after remedial acceleration initiatives.The analysis found that budget and schedule overruns could be attributed to five key causes:project management factorsstakeholder conflictsresource constraintsregulatory, and policy-related challengesunfavourable external environment.Improving project delivery performance starts with successful planning, followed by rigorous management during delivery. As filtering technology improves and there is an increased focus on environmental impacts, the concept of managing fine coal rejects by filtering, mixing with coarse rejects and dry stacking them is being considered more seriously. In Queensland, there appears to be a desire from regulators to move away from wet rejects facilities towards dry-stacked facilities, resulting in a change in the risk profile for the facility.A coalminer has a site with many constraints, including limited area that is not planned to be undermined and nearby rivers that are prone to flooding. The design of a dry-stacked facility that meets the operational requirements and environmental compliance criteria is challenging in subtropical climatic settings, where there is a need to consider wet seasons with high-volume, sustained rainfall events. The impact of the rainfall is multifaceted, requiring careful surface water management to separate clean and contact water, adequate foundation preparation to limit seepage to groundwater, management of stack stability given a potentially high phreatic surface and the avoidance of potential flood zones. These design constraints were compounded by a limited area available for rejects storage that would not be undermined.This paper presents a summary of the conceptual design of a dry rejects facility, including consideration of regulatory and client requirements, provision for expansion while also considering progressive rehabilitation, diversion of clean water as much as practicable during operations and siting constraints. This report describes research by the Bureau of Mines on alternative materials-handling strategies for reducing the costs and incidence of back injuries in low-seam coal mines. Strategies recommended for redesigning materials-handling tasks include elimination of tasks, mechanization of tasks, and matching lifting tasks to the physical capabilities of underground miners. The report also discusses other methods that can be used by management to reduce the costs associated with back injuries.

Of late, solidification modeling has progressed considerably to emerge as a viable simulation tool for the foundry engineer. A wide variety of tools exist in the commercial market to cater to the various needs of the design/ foundry engineer. In fact, recent developments in the area of solidification modeling have been so rapid that a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art is very much needed. In this paper, an attempt is made to summarize the various issues of solidification modeling, at the same time addressing the historical evolution of the subject. The various phenomenological issues covered in this paper include: heat transfer, fluid flow during mold-filling, solidification kinetics and microstructural evolution, quick-analysis schemes for approximations, porosity prediction models, and the phenomena of fluid flow in the mushy zone. Modeling issues related to the development of solidification stresses which lead to defects such as hot tears and the development of artificial intelligence concepts in the area of rigging design are also discussed. Due emphasis is given to the various phenomena which add to the complexity of the whole subject, and the various alternatives available for solving a particular problem. For example, the heat transfer problem can be approached by the use of simple modulus schemes or by solving the conduction equation to obtain a more accurate temperature distribution. Similarly the microstructural evolution can be handled in a deterministic way by use of nucleation and growth models, or in a probabilistic way by use of empirical models. The main goal of this paper is to put the multi-faceted problem of solidification modeling in proper perspective so that it can serve as a guide for future developments in this area.

An account is given of the history and operation of the Straits Tin market and the Penang price. The procedure by which the official ruling tin price is determined is presented and the way in which bids are treated is outlined: the price declared in Penang is the result of a joint operation by the two Malaysian smelters and is arrived at by finding the highest price at which the whole of the day's offerings for sale can be sold, thus reflecting the marriage of the offerings of the individual mine producers with the demand for Straits Tin from the consuming countries of the world. A system of accurate weighing, sampling and assaying of concentrates delivered to the smelters' premises enables the various ore-buying agencies of the two smelters to notify their central offices promptly of the estimated tin content of the concentrates their customers wish to price that day, so that by 11.00 a.m. both smelters will have exchanged with each other figures giving the total quantity of metal they have for inclusion in the day's market, at the same time exchanging particulars of the bids they have received. Miners are encouraged to sell regularly for cash and an evenness is thus achieved which avoids large daily fluctuations in overall quantity.

Resolution Copper Mine in Arizona, USA, is planned to be a 2000 m deep panel cave mine with virgin rock temperatures exceeding 80¦C in rock with high crystalline silica content, resulting in a very challenging ventilation and cooling system design. This is one of the largest copper orebodies ever found and, with a planned rock production rate of 120 kton/day. The project is currently in its prefeasibility phase and the paper discusses features of the ventilation and cooling system design which includes multiple ventilation shafts with total primary ventilation flow of about 3000 m3/s and both surface and underground refrigeration plants producing more than 140 MW refrigeration capacity. The cooling system features large surface bulk air coolers chilling all downcast air supplemented by an underground secondary air cooler system and a chilled service water system. This will be a very challenging mine to ventilate and cool but this work has demonstrated that it will be technically achievable with the application of existing technology.CITATION:Bluhm, S, Moreby, R G, von Glehn, F and Pascoe, C, 2013. As we develop the energy we need to nurture industrial civilization in decades ahead, we will at the same time reduce our reliance on dwindling supplies of oil and gas. Coal and uranium will be developed as our major fuel sources to meet medium-term. energy needs, followed by fusion and solar energy for the long term.IntroductionTHIS PAPER treats the matter of energy in a way that is quite different from that of the crisis-type atmosphere which surrounds so much of it currently in the news media. On the one hand, we lift the whole subject of energy out from its present-day involvement with short-term issues and take an important longer-term look at the solutions which lie before us. On the other hand, we recognize that short-term issues are important and, as we are reading and hearing, many of the right short-term solutions continue to elude our politicians, our policy makers, and even some of those with knowledge and authority in the energy field.A year ago, if you asked people how they would go about conserving energy, they would probably have said turn out the lights. They would probably say the same thing today, but they might also include other things such as driving the automobile more slowly or putting more insulation in the attic. However, their first impulse is still to use less electricity."
