To determine their effectiveness in different climate and soil conditions, a demonstration of dozer blades specifically designed for recontouring mine spoil was conducted at an East Texas surface coal mine. The specialized equipment included a 48-foot angle blade, a modified 24-foot "U" blade, a 13-foot deep "U" blade, and a 24-foot grading bar. Both the 4b-foot and the 24-foot "U" blades were mounted in a two-tractor, single-operator configuration. To meet flotation problems common in this mining region, a 22-foot lightweight blade was developed and demonstrated for use on a 400-430 hp tractor. The demonstration involved 1,185 acres and showed a 50% reduction in reclamation costs and a 47% reduction in fuel requirements for this mine site over conventional equipment. Improved equipment, trained operators, good supervision, and improved monitoring techniques contributed to the savings. Procedures and results of the demonstration are presented and analyzed here along with guidelines for application of findings.

"FOREWORDAmong many problems created by World War II, the question of supplies and distribution of raw materials is of outstanding importance. One of the most critical of these raw materials is fuel, and of the fuels coal is of primary importance. The normal consumption of coal has increased greatly owing to the increased tempo of industry in general. It has been necessary to divert much of the fuel oil, gasoline, etc., ordinarily used for industrial and domestic purposes, to supply the enormous demands of mechanized warfare. Coal must be provided to replace this fuel. Furthermore, the enormous increase in the production of steel has increased the demand for coking coals to a critical point.The Solid Fuels Administration for War is encouraging the use of anthracite fines in the production of byproduct coke for blast furnaces for three reasons. First, the production of anthracite for domestic use; is hampered by the inability to find a market for the fines incidental to the production of domestic sizes. Second, the shortage of low-volatile coking coal is acute, and any action that will decrease the quantity of low-volatile coal required will relieve the situation. As will be seen in this report, there is some promise that use of anthracite fines in coke-oven mixes will lower the amounts of low-volatile coal required. Third, utilization of those anthracite fines will tend also to alleviate the general fuel shortage. It has been the privilege of the Bureau of Mines to cooperate with the Solid Fuels Administration in the technical problems involved."

The mechanical properties of Mg-Gd and Mg-Y solid solutions have been studied under uniaxial tension and compression between 4K and 298K. The results reveal that Mg-Gd alloys exhibit higher strength and ductility under tension and compression attributed to the more effective solid solution strengthening effect and grain boundary strengthening. Profuse twinning has been observed under compression, resulting in a material texture with strong dominance of basal component parallel to compression axis. Under tension, twining is less active and the texture evolution is affected mostly by slip. The alloys exhibit pronounced yield stress asymmetry and significantly different work-hardening behaviour under tension and compression. Increasing of Gd and/or Y concentration leads to the reduction of the tension-compression asymmetry due to the weakening of the recrystallization texture and more balanced twinning and slip activity during plastic deformation. The results suggest that under compression of Mg-Y alloys slip is more active than twinning in comparison to Mg-Gd alloys.

"Failures of coal ribs are major hazards in underground coal mines. For the period of 2010 to 2014, rib falls were the leading cause of groundfall fatalities and accounted for 35% of all groundfall-related fatalities. Currently, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a research project to develop an engineering-based design methodology for rib control in coal mines to reduce rib fall accidents and fatalities in underground coal mines. Numerical models can be used as part of the design methodology provided the models are appropriately calibrated and verified. The paper presents a coal rib model to simulate the mechanism of the coal deformation and fracturing that can lead to stress-driven rib falls. The proposed coal rib model was calibrated against published data from an instrumented rib site at the West Cliff mine in Australia. Fracturing of the coal rib was defined by critical values of shear strain of the coal material and rib displacement. A critical plastic shear strain of 2.8% and a sudden increase of rib displacement of 30 to 45 mm were sufficient to develop a fracture plane in the rib model. Accordingly, a discontinuous rib deformation was achieved and it compared favorably against field monitoring data. INTRODUCTION Coal ribs are the vertical walls of coal formed when entries are developed in a coal bed. Failures of coal ribs are a major hazard in underground coal mines. Furthermore, failing ribs can contribute indirectly to roof and floor instability by increasing opening widths across intersections and entryways. Over the last 18 years, there has been a continual occurrence of injuries and fatalities in underground coal mines due to rib falls. For the period of 2010 to 2014, rib falls (excluding longwall face and bursts) were the leading cause of ground fall fatalities and accounted for 35% of all groundfall-related fatalities [1]. Despite the threat of rib falls, the amount of rib falls and rib support research conducted in the U.S. is limited compared with what has been done in pillar and roof support design. Currently, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a research project to develop an engineering-based design methodology for rib control in coal mines to minimize the number of rib fall accidents and fatalities in underground coal mines."

The 50 pct Fe-50 pct Co alloy undergoes a transformation from disorder to an ordered structure of the CsCl type reportedly in the vicinity of 732OC. During this process, the coercive force goes through a maximum, apparently as a result of strains associated with the coherent nucleation and growth reaction. This magnetic alloy also shows a marked increase in the ratio of residual to saturation induction, which is associated with annealing to a high degree of order with the continuous application of a magnetic field. The increase in ratio can be explained on the basis of a decrease in 90' domain boundaries and, perhaps, by an increase in anisotropy resulting from lattice distortion. THE 50 pct Fe-50 pct Co alloy undergoes a disorder-order transformation which has been reported to occur in the vicinity of 732°C1,2 The ordered structure is the CsCl type.' This magnetic alloy also shows a marked increase in the ratio of residual to saturation induction as a result of heat treatment in a magnetic field, sometimes called a response to magnetic anneal.'-' The purpose of this investigation was to study the course of the ordering reaction, the nature of the response to .heat treatment in a magnetic field, and the relation, if any, between ordering and the response. Procedure The method of approach in this investigation was to produce an initial structure as completely disordered as possible and then gradually to order the alloy by isothermal anneals at various temperatures under different conditions of the applied magnetic field. Magnetic, magnetostriction, and X-ray analyses were of primary importance in determining the property and structural changes resulting from the isothermal anneals. Rings of the 50 pct Fe-50 pct Co alloy were prepared from the elemental powders by a powder metallurgy technique, further details of which may be found in ref. 7. The initial structure was produced by annealing the specimens for ½ hr at 1000°C, cooling to and holding for ½ hr at 900°C (in the a range above the ordering temperature), and water quenching. Isothermal anneals were performed at 600°, 675°, 720°, and 740°C. For example, rings were heated to 600°C, held for a predetermined period of time, and cooled by natural cooling at a rate slightly slower than an air cool (average of 20" to 25°C per min). The tests (magnetic, etc.) were made after each heat treatment. All high temperature treatments were performed in a purified hydrogen atmosphere. The treatments at the various temperatures were carried out under one or more conditions of an applied field including 1—no field, 2—field of 20 oersteds applied on cooling only, and 3—field of 20 oersteds applied continuously during heating, holding, and cooling. Magnetic measurements were made using the standard Rowland ring technique8 with a maximum field strength of 100 oersteds. The magnetization curve, induction at 100 oersteds (B.), residual induction (Bt), and coercive force (Hc) were determined. All magnetic analysis data were based on an average of the results from three rings. A strain gage technique9 as used for the measurement of magnetostriction. The X-ray determination of the relative amount of ordered phase present was made on the ring specimen used for magnetic measurement. This was done by the back-reflection method using a rotating specimen (because of the large grain size) with unfiltered CoKa radiation and a 7 hr exposure time. Intensity measurements of the ordered line (300) were made by comparing visually the films so obtained with standard films prepared by exposing for different lengths of time a specimen given a long time anneal (high degree of order). Results In all instances the saturation induction (induction at 100 oersteds) was found to increase slightly with annealing time. This effect was small and appears to be the increase in saturation induction to be expected on ordering.10-13 The residual induction behavior was markedly influenced by the field condition during annealing, Figs. 1, 2. For the condition of no applied field, the ratio of residual to saturation induction remained essentially constant for short annealing times but showed a significant increase at longer times. With increasing annealing temperature, less time was required to produce this increase in the ratio. In the case of the 600°C anneals, the increase did not occur until approximately 20 hr, Fig. I, while on annealing at 740°C the increase was immediate, Fig. 2. Slight decreases in the ratio may be observed at 100 hr for specimens treated at 720°C and at 1 hr for those treated at 740°C. Specimens annealed in a field of 20 oersteds showed a residual to saturation induction ratio consistently higher than that for the specimens annealed without the field. The first anneal with the field (¼ hr) caused an abrupt increase in the ratio at all temperatures; thereafter, the increase in the ratio was generally similar for specimens annealed

Campbell,' in 1896 said: "The Birmingham district in Alabama has certain great advantages for there are few places in the world where fuel and ore are so near together, although, unfortunately, both are of inferior quality; the ore being low in iron and high in phosphorus and the coal giving a weak and impure coke." This statement could not have been questioned in 1894, but by 1896 several Robinson-Ramsay washers had been put into operation and weak and impure coke was a thing of the past. The Warrior coal field of Alabama contains six seams that yield coking coal of excellent quality. In descending order, they are Brookwood, Milldale, Pratt, America, Mary Lee, and Black Creek. In each of these, however, bands of rock and bone coal of varying thickness are stratified with the coal; and while some of these impurities can be separated from the coal by the miner, much of it must be loaded out with the coal. Consequently, unless the coal is washed before being coked, it will yield a coke of varying ash and sulfur content quite unsatisfactory for blastfurnace use. At present, the Gulf States Steel Co. is producing run-of-mine coal at its Virginia mine, from the America seam, that is uniformly low enough in ash to permit of coking without washing, but this is the only exception to the above statement. Alabama was the first state to experiment seriously with coal washers, was the first to install washers on a large scale and, up to the present, has maintained the lead. The Alabama State Mine Inspector reports that during 1923 20,919,303 tons of bituminous coal was mined in Alabama; 12,858,499 tons of which was delivered to coal washers for treatment.

Presplitting is a form of blasting that when executed properly will create a smooth wall that will minimize secondary conditioning. In recent years, presplitting has become a popular technique to be used in both the mining and construction industries, however, presplitting fails on many occasions because of ‘geologic conditions’. This is typically because of improper explosive loads consisting of overloading and underloading blastholes. In this paper the authors introduce new factors such as a presplit factor which varies for different rock types, selection criteria for the spacing of presplits, and the optimization of explosive load for the technique of Precision Presplitting.

The objectives of this study were the evaluation of the technical and economical feasibility of utilizing color and color infrared aerial photography to satisfy some informational needs for pre-mine planning, mine progress monitoring, and reclamation monitoring. Seven aerial data collection missions were conducted within a two year period over strip mine sites in Pennsylvania. Scales of 1:6,000; 1:12,000; 1:24,000; and 1:48,000 were flown on the first aerial mission. The 1:12,000 was chosen as the optimal scale for the remaining six flights. An extensive literature and legislative review and discussions with strip mine operators identified the informational parameters that could possibly be obtained from aerial photography. Interpretability accuracies were evaluated for parameters in the broad categories of land use, soils, water, vegetation, and geology. Seasonal interpretation characteristics were noted for infrared photography. Man hours for photointerpretation and costs of aerial data collection were monitored closely and incorporated into a cost benefit analysis. Those parameters that could be mapped, identified, or measured with accuracies =75 percent were incorporated into a photointerpretation training manual. An additional analysis was performed to determine the applicability of the interpretation methodologies and results developed for Eastern sites to Western surface coal mining sites. In addition, a separate aerial photographic interpretation manual was produced during this contract. It is intended to be utilized by eastern and midwestern surface mine operators and regulatory personnel.

The purity of rare earth products depends on the ability of the reagents used to selectively promote the precipitation of the rare earth elements (REE) from impurities present in sulfuric liquors. The present study aims at investigating the conditions required to precipitate REE, either as rare earth oxalates or carbonates, from purified rare earth sulfuric liquor with a low Al3+ and UO2 2+ and a very high Ca2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, and SO4 2− impurity content. The rare earth sulfuric liquor was obtained in a previous study by the reaction of a rare earth ore with sulfuric acid, pyrolysis at 700 °C/2 h, cooling at 20 °C, and water leaching. The impurities such as Fe3+, Th4+, and PO4 3− were completely removed from the liquor in two consecutive neutralization steps. In order to recover the REE, the purified rare earth liquor was then treated with oxalic acid and sodium carbonate. Rare earth oxides (REO) precipitated with oxalic acid displayed a very high purity (99.2% w/w) and low impurity content. In contrast, the rare earth carbonates precipitated with sodium carbonate presented a comparatively lower REO content (68.5% w/w) and 94.2% of purity, but with a higher content of impurities. Better precipitating conditions were achieved at 60 °C, compared with 20 °C, and under stoichiometric reagent consumption, with REE precipitation efficiencies higher than 96%. The dosage above the stoichiometric condition caused the precipitation of calcium oxalates and co-precipitation of rare earth sulfates when oxalic acid is used, and precipitation of calcium, manganese, and uranium carbonates and also a co-precipitation of rare earth sulfate when sodium carbonate were used. An integrated flowsheet to produce a high-quality rare earth product from rare earth sulfuric liquor containing some impurities is proposed.

"NIOSH has observed that many control rooms and operator compartments in the US mining industry do not have filtration systems capable of maintaining low dust concentrations in these areas. In this study at a mineral processing plant, to reduce respirable dust concentrations in a control room which had no cleaning system for intake air, a filtration/pressurization system originally designed for enclosed cabs was modified and installed. Eighty-seven percent of submicron particles were reduced by the system at static conditions, meaning that greater than eighty-seven percent of respirable dust particles should be reduced. The particle size distribution for respirable dust particles are greater than for submicron particles, and filtration systems usually are more efficient in capturing the larger particles. A positive pressure near 0.02 inches of water gauge was produced which is an important component for an effective system and minimizes particles (e.g. dust) from entering into the room. The intake airflow was around 118 cfm, which is greater than the airflow suggested by ASHRAE for acceptable indoor air quality. INTRODUCTION Chronic overexposure to respirable silica dust (particle diameter < 10 microns) leads to a progressive lung disease known as silicosis. Workers who develop silicosis have an increased incidence of lung cancer and pulmonary disorders. In June 1997, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (1) found sufficient evidence to declare that inhaled crystalline silica in the form of quartz and cristobalite is carcinogenic. Mining is one of the leading industries for occupational exposure to silica dust (2-7). Control rooms located in dusty areas in some mines are of particular concern (8). Many mineral processing operations utilize operator’s compartments and/or control rooms to house workers who are performing particular job functions. Most industrial processing mills have rooms where a worker looks out over the facility and has direct control over the product flow throughout the entire building. In addition, primary crusher operators are often located in a compartment from which they are able to view the primary crushing function. Their job is to control when trucks dump into the primary jaw crusher and the rate of feed of the ore from the hopper into the crusher. Many of these control rooms and operator booths do not have filtration systems capable of cleaning air entering the control room or booth, which can result in elevated concentrations of dust in the room or booth. To reduce the dust concentrations in these rooms, it would make sense to clean the entering air with filtration/pressurization units similar to those proven to provide a clean environment in enclosed cabs."

"The paper studies the control performance of the flotation process as a function of the measurement accuracy and sampling frequency of an on-stream XRF analyzer, using a simple dynamic model. An additional aim is to assess how the economical result of a mineral flotation process depends on the quality of process control based on the on-line elemental assays.An on-stream XRF analyzer measures the concentrations of slurry lines in a continuous cycle from several process points. The control performance depends on the analytical accuracy and sampling frequency of the concentration measurement. With a long cycle time, the state of the process changes before a new measurement becomes available. With short measurement times the statistical variance of the counted X-ray pulses increases, increasing the random error in the analysis. In addition, the measurement accuracy depends on the concentration of the component to be measured from the slurry.To quantify the effect of analysis error and frequency to process control, a simple dynamic process model is created in the Matlab environment. Data from a copper flotation circuit is used as a test case. The process model comprises a first order reaction equation and the grade-recovery -relationship estimated from process data. The control was modeled using the control strategies implemented into a rule based advanced control system.The economical performance of the control was studied by calculating the overall net smelter return at various analyzer parameter combinations. The economical performance of the process declines strongly when the sampling cycle is increased. In studied case the sample measurement time did not have a significant effect on the results. The economical performance of the simulated process corresponds to an almost uncontrolled process when sampling cycles longer than 40 min are applied."

As NI 43-101 is law in Canada, the SEC allows mineral resources and mineral reserves prepared under CIM Definition Standards for issuers that are reporting in Canada but are also registered with the SEC. The SEC places conditions on the disclosure of these estimates. US shareholders are cautioned that the requirements under NI 43-101 and the CIM Definition Standards differ significantly from those of Industry Guide 7.Note: this Guide contains the Commission's basic mining disclosure policy. This paper describes the general principles of the expander body with post-grouting (EBI) system, and how it is similar in nature to a large-scale pressuremeter device. The results from the installation of an EBI can be used to provide information about the stress-strain characteristics of the soil adjacent to the device and to compute estimates of nominal axial resistance. As the EBI expands during grouting, pressure is applied to the in-situ soil surrounding the device thereby compacting/densifying the soil. The nominal axial resistance for small diameter piles/ground anchors can be increased due to the greater soil stiffness and shear strength around the device, larger surface and end area, and improved soil-to-EBI interaction in side resistance. The shape of the response curves depends on the geotechnical conditions of the soil (e.g., in-situ stress state, strength, and stiffness) and the installation method of the piling/ground anchor. This technique has been used successfully with different pile types and ground anchors in a wide range of conditions from very loose sands/silts to very dense sands and medium-dense gravels as well as in soft to stiff clays. This paper also describes a mini case history in which 80 piles were installed to support an office building, and the results of the static axial compression load tests performed on a production FDP+EBI pile is also included.

"This paper performs the reliability evaluation of pile foundation under vertical loading condition using the concept of fuzzy set theory. The uncertain parameters are expressed as fuzzy numbers. Monte Carlo simulation technique in conjunction with fuzzy set theory and fuzzy reliability index approach are implemented in evaluation of the probability of failure of pile foundations. The results are validated through some well established methods such as, First Order Reliability Method (FORM), Second Order Reliability Method (SORM), and direct Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS). Response surface method (RSM) is used to approximate the original limit state equation through second order polynomial. The effect of the position of the water table is also highlighted. Finally, the effect of the variation of applied load is examined and it is observed that the fuzzy reliability analysis gives more conservative estimate of failure probability than the other methods.INTRODUCTIONCivil engineering structures, such as high rise buildings, bridges, offshore platforms etc. are always subjected to vertical as well as horizontal loads. To support these structures, pile foundations are generally the solution in most of the situation. It transmits load from the superstructure to soil at a reasonably great depth. This transfer may be by vertical distribution of the load along the pile shaft or a direct application of load to a lower stratum through the pile tip. Different methods are available to estimate the capacity of piles embedded in different types of soil and under the application of vertical and horizontal loading. To consider the variability in soil and other unforeseen able situation, generally a reasonable value of factor of safety is used to estimate the designed capacity of the pile. Recent developments have shown a trend to place the treatment of uncertainty on a more formal basis, in particular by applying the results of reliability theory to geotechnical engineering. Keeping in mind the importance of pile foundation in the engineering structures it is essential to maintain a high structural safety which result in increase in reliability. The probability theory has been proved to be a powerful tool for representing variability in mathematical models. The variability associated with soil parameters and the modeling uncertainties are needed to be considered for the reliability assessment purpose.Recent development (Zhang et al. 2005; Misra and Roberts 2006; Haldar and Babu 2008; Basu and Salgado 2012; Teixeira et al. 2012; Pula and Rozanski 2012; and Chan and Low 2012) showed that the reliability analysis of pile foundations subjected to axial as well as lateral load has been one of the important current research topic in geotechnical field. Probabilistic based performance criteria were quantified for a single pile and pile groups in cohesionless soil by Eloseily et al. (2002). A p-multiplier approach was incorporated into the analysis to modify the p-y curve for a single pile to obtain the p-y curve for individual piles in a pile group. A statistical analysis of set up capacity of pile was carried out from the database of a large number of pile testing data in clay by Yang and Liang (2006). Load and resistance factor design (LRFD) using FORM was used for examining the different load and resistance factor for different target reliability index. Limit state analysis of drilled shaft was performed by Misra and Roberts (2006) in probabilistic framework. The fuzzy based reliability analysis (Dodagoudar and Venkatachalam 2000; and Park et al. 2012) of the earth slope was reported in the literature. Dodagoudar and Venkatachalam (2000) presented a new approach, called fuzzy point estimate method (FPEM) for reliability evaluation of earth slope. Park et al. (2012) reported a hybrid approach, fuzzy set theory in conjunction with Monte Carlo simulation technique, to determine the failure probability of earth slope. Second Order Reliability Method"

"Mining industry as a source of raw material is essential to society however, it lacks of good reputation due to the type of management historically applied to many of its social and environmental impacts. It is argued that this situation has hampered the obtaining of social license to operate of a lot of mining projects around the world. The last considerations are very common in Latin American countries. As a result, the mining sector has understood that the viability of the business long term is associated with more profit for the shareholders but also with activities that improve the livelihoods of local communities, enhance the capabilities of local governments and preserve the ecosystems around the projects. Nevertheless, recent studios have shown that most of the current advances to incorporate sustainability concepts in mining have been mainly focused on control and the prevention of environmental and social impacts of extractive activities. Thus, contributing to the development of territories around mining projects constitutes a fundamental aspect of the business competitiveness through reducing cost and risks of stopping projects, innovating new ways of relationship with stakeholders, improving the level of reputation of the industry as well as its position in the market. However, this contribution requires formal strategies and models that enable companies understand the different resources in the territories where their mining activities are developed and those resource transformations, in order to establish the best way to articulate the project with the territory, pursuing an effective contribution to its development, truly sustainable over time even after the mine closure. CONTEXT Currently in the world but especially in developing countries such as Latin Americans, different stakeholders are increasingly vigilant of how mining companies carry out their activities in terms of socio-economic and environmental management of territories, not only for its impact on the livelihoods of the communities that inhabit them, but also because many demanders of raw materials -both countries and companies- have set sustainability standards as a prerequisite to establishing business relationships with mining companies, such as the recently declared Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 (UN, 2015). Accordingly, decide underinvest or not to invest in sustainability issues carries risks for mining companies. However, invest much in the wrong way may involve the same risks. Managers are concerned to ensure profits, and therefore they decide carefully how to invest in the areas of production, R & D or marketing. Likewise, they should think strategically about investing in initiatives related to sustainability. This if they really want that those investments in fact help to improve the competitiveness of the company. The mining industry benefits from natural capital that extracts, so it should implement strategies that lead to remunerate such benefit to the territories (Almaguer, 2007). One option is through the transformation of natural capital in other types of non-existent capital or poorly developed in their areas of influence. In this way, the value generated by the extraction of underground resources is shared and additionally contributing to improving the quality of life of the communities. Historically, mining industry has been into several problems to achieve this, which represents one of the aspects that has most influenced the current reputation of mining industry in some regions of Latin America. Many communities, local governments and civil society organizations continue to associate this activity with the destruction of the social fabric and ecosystems in the territories, and their opposition against companies working in the areas has led to affect the operational continuity of many projects (Hamann, 2003; Prno and Scott, 2012; Slack, 2012)."

It is not uncommon for overall quality of coal from a mine to deteriorate as the mine is developed or for an improved-quality coal specification to be imposed during the life of the mine. Either of these conditions typically results in management pressuring mine personnel to take greater care in delineating the seam from top and bottom rock. When mining and seam conditions require a portion of the seam to be removed to ensure sufficient rock is removed to meet the quality specification, physical-coal cleaning may become economically competitive with in-pit seam grooming. The additional cost of coal cleaning may, in some cases, be justified by permitting higher recovery of the coal seam than is possible when cleaning the seam with excavators in the pit. This paper compares projected coal cleaning results with present in-pit grooming techniques and reports the economic results.

In the search for possible future sources of petroleum products, the recovery and utilization of bitumens from the large outcropping deposits of bituminous sandstones in the United States have been under study by the Bureau of Mines for the past several years. The results of laboratory research in the adaptation of the hot-water separation process to recovery of bitumen from bituminous sandstones were reported in an earlier publication, on the Edna deposits near San Luis Obispo, Calif. This publication included analytical data on the cracked products and asphalts obtained from the extracted bitumen and on the cracking and distillation of the bitumen. Comparable hot-water separation tests have been run in the San Francisco, Calif., laboratory of the Bureau of Mines on quarry samples from the large deposits of bituminous sandstones near Vernal and Sunnyside, Utah. The bitumens were isolated from the extracts of the separation plant and analyzed at the Petroleum and Oil-Shale Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Laramie, Wyo. Part I of this report summarizes the general characteristics of the Vernal and Sunnyside deposits and discusses the hot-water separation process as applied to those bituminous sandstones and the results obtained. The separation tests showed that these bituminous sandstones also respond to treatment by the hotwater method of separation. The bitumen in the Vernal sandstone was extracted more readily by the action of hot water than was the Edna bitumen, which greatly simplified plant operation. The Vernal sandstone contains no water-soluble iron compounds, such as were found in the Edna sandstone, and, therefore, required no preliminary water washing. Recovery of bitumen from the Vernal sandstone was about 96 percent.

(Wilkes-Barre Meeting, June, 1911.) OF the several extensive deposits of brown iron-ore in Cuba, including those of Mayari and Moa, that of Mayari was the first to be systematically explored, and was selected as the scene of the first operations in the development of this class of ore. Construction-work, begun in the spring of 1907, involved the building of 16 miles of standard-gauge railroad and two large double-track inclines, the installation of mining-machinery, a nodulizing-plant, power-plant, shops and shipping-facilities, and the dredging of an extensive basin for deep-draught vessels. Unusual weather-conditions delayed the completion of portions of this work so that the entire plant was not in operation until December, 1909. The ore in its natural state contains a very large percentage of water, which increases to some extent with the depth below the surface. Near the surface it is red in color, with somewhat granular structure. The color gradually changes with depth, finally reaching a bright yellow. The consistency also changes towards, the bottom to a clay-like, sticky mass. The relative proportion of red and yellow ore is quite variable; in some places the yellow reaches close to the surface, while in others the red extends almost to the underlying serpentine. Fig. 1 is a map showing the Mayari division of the Spanish-American Iron Co. The ore lies on an irregular plateau about 15 miles long and 5 miles wide at the widest point, entirely covered with pine trees and brush, which grow directly on the ore. The elevation at the northern extremity, which is approached by the railroad, is about 1,700 ft. above sea-level. At the southern end the general elevation is about 2,000 ft.
