"Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the most common by-products produced during light metals production. It is considered to be the cause of greenhouse effects. Efficient reduction of CO2 can help minimize the rate of global warming and improving energy sufficiency. In this paper, a novel light metal production process was developed using ionic liquid electrolytes. This process has significant advantages compared to the traditional high temperature processes such as zero CO2 and CF4 emission, low energy consumption due to the low temperature operation and nonconsumable electrodes. Two types of anode materials (graphite, extruded carbon) were tested in electrolysis experiment. The results showed that both anode materials were stable (negligible weight loss). However, the extruded carbon was found to be superior to graphite in terms of current density and current efficiency. The calculated energy consumption for aluminum production was less than 10 kWh/kg at current densities up to 300 A/m2.IntroductionGlobal demand for ultra-light, ultra-strong, recyclable metals is growing as the world switches to low-emission vehicles, energy-saving devices and sustainable products. Aluminum demand is forecast to climb by 30 percent; magnesium demand by 200 percent, while for the emerging industrial light metal, titanium, the demand is expected to be at least double in the next decade. However smelting of light metals is the most energy intensive among all the steps of light metals production. For example, on an average it takes about 15.7 kWh of electricity to produce one kilogram of aluminum from alumina [1, 2, 3]. Advancements in energy efficiency have been steady, but slow, and most U.S. aluminum smelting production operates at 95% current efficiency. Besides high energy consumption, another major concern of the light metals smelting process is the emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG). Electrolysis green house gas emissions in the Hall-Héroult process can be split into three groups: 1) reduction reaction emissions, carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO); 2) process upset perfluorocarbons emissions; and 3) hydrogen fluoride (HF) formed from the moisture (H2O) present in the raw materials [2, 3]. Hydrogen fluoride gas can be captured and returned to the cells by the alumina dry scrubbing system used in modern facilities. A total of 5.31 kilograms of CO2 is generated from the reduction process for each kilogram of aluminum produced in the average U.S. primary facility. The perfluorocarbon emissions are related to the “anode effect.” If the concentration of alumina in the bath becomes too low, other reactions between the carbon anode and the bath occur and tetrafluoromethane (CF4) and hexafluoroethane (C2F6) are generated. These gases have high global warming potentials (GWP), which is a ratio developed to compare the ability of each greenhouse gas to trap heat in the atmosphere relative to carbon dioxide"

"A new ship dock at a Philadelphia area refinery will be capable of docking the largest tanker to travel the Delaware River, the Stena V-MAX, which will induce significant lateral loads. The loads at the dock, a system of mooring dolphins and platforms, will be resisted by over 150 pipe piles, including some 20- and 30-in diameter, reinforced, concrete-filled pipe piles and H-piles. Construction included driving the pipe piles to the required ultimate capacity, flushing the pipe pile casing clean of overburden materials, followed by drilling rock sockets into the underlying Wissahickon Formation. The Wissahickon Formation is a complex subsurface that includes variations in depth to bedrock, rock quality, degree of weathering and the presence of very hard quartzite lenses or inclusions. Because of the problematic subsurface, the designers and client requested extensive pile dynamic analysis (PDA) testing by TRC Engineers (TRC).Before beginning, the contractor requested that TRC perform the WEAP (wave equation analysis program) to evaluate the proposed hammer (APE D30-32 open-end diesel) to drive the piles into the proposed bearing strata while maintaining allowable compression stress levels. The WEAP provided a prediction of blow counts and stresses for various ultimate capacities, and showed that for the HP14x89 piles with a required ultimate capacity of 480 kips, a blow count of at least four blows per in at a stroke of 8.0 ft was necessary.New Approachway RampThe PDA testing began at the new dock approachway ramp, parallel to the existing one. The new structure is a 300-ft-long by 21- ft-wide concrete deck supported on seven bents; each has two 24- ft-diameter steel open-ended pipe piles. Every pipe received an HP 14 x 89 x 80-ft pile that was later driven beyond the pipe pile tip to create a composite pile. The pipe piles were later cleaned of overburden materials and finally filled with concrete and rebar. At each bent, a cap was installed on top of each pair of pipe piles, and then a prefabricated concrete deck was added."

In view of decreasing head grades, the relatively high gold price, and recent developments in metal evaluation, an exercise was initiated to determine the extent of gold concentration, the mode of occurrence, and the areas of concentration within the run-of-mine milling circuits of Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company (Witwatersrand) Limited. The total gold content of three of the thirteen run-of-mine mils in the Group was measured as a typical lock-up of approximately 200 kg per mil. The majority of this gold was concentrated either behind the grid-type body liners or within the pockets of the body liners. This paper is an account of the experimental procedure and the results obtained, and highlights possible means of limiting gold lock-up in future.

This paper describes metal- mining practices at the Harrington -Hickory lead - silver - zinc mine at Milford , Beaver County , Utah . The operations of the Harrington-Hickory incorporate a number of features that should prove of interest and value to other operators of small mines . These features include employee participation in profits , a well- laid -out electrical system, adequate financing , a well - balanced equipment and supply inventory , a well - organized system of bookkeeping , adequate roads , and good management . As crude ore is shipped directly to smelters and mills in the Salt Lake Valley , close attention is paid to see that the ore is segregated by classes and treated where it can bring the greatest not return . A combination of these features has resulted in maintaining relatively low costs, considering the grade and size of ore shoots at a time , during and following the war , when equipment , supplies , and labor were costly and difficult to obtain . The period covered in this report includes two war years and two years following , from April 1, 1944 to June 30 , 1947 .

This report deals with upgrading of the coal reserves of Raleigh County, VI. Va., to metallurgical standards. The data on samples herein correctly show the characteristics of the bed at the point where sampled and are used to indicate the general quality of the bed in the county. The principal results and conclusions are: 1. Raleigh County contains large reserves of high-quality, high-, medium-, and low-volatile coals. 2. The principal beds from which an increased amount of coal is expected to be mined in the future are: The Eagle, Powellton, No. 5 Block, Hernshaw, Fire Creek, and Pocahontas No.6.

Specialized sulfur concretes were developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines as a result of research for the beneficial utilization of sulfur in construction materials. Materials were developed for use in acid and salt corrosive environments where portland cement concrete has been found to deteriorate. Because the mineral aggregates also come into contact with the corrosive media, concretes were developed utilizing both limestone and quartz aggregates. The sulfur binder used with both aggregates was modified by reaction with 5 pct dicyclopentadiene to improve product durability. Sulfur quartz aggregate concrete was found to have moderately high strength characteristics (6,000 psi compressive) and was extremely resistant to chemical attack by both acid and salt solutions. Sulfur limestone aggregate concrete exhibited very high strength characteristics (9,000 psi compressive) and was extremely resistant to chemical attack of salt solutions. Both types of concretes maintained their strength and integrity after long-term testing in acid and salt solutions and exhibited considerable resistance to damage by the action of freezing and thawing. Potential uses include leach tanks, electrolytic cells, thickeners, bridge decking, industrial flooring, pipe, and tile.

"SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONThe test data indicate that water infusion of the Pittsburgh coal seam does not reduce the amount of fine dust produced during mining operations to the extent reported elsewhere. Wide variations in the amounts of dust collected in the air current were noted in duplicate samples and repetitive tests. Changes in depth and location of the infusion holes and amount of water injected and addition of a wetting agent to the water had little effect on the amount of dust liberated.Water was forced readily into the coal. Some water flowed out along the cleats, but an appreciable amount remained in the seam. Little or no water pene¬trated the coal seam above the upper infusion holes.The average dust concentration (with and without infusion) in the return air, 40 feet outby the working face, was 25 million particles per cubic foot during undercutting, 20 million during drilling, 75 million during shot firing, and 20 million during hand loading. At the working face the average concentration was 3 to 6 times higher. The concentrations were measured at an airflow of 1,600 cubic feet per minute (c.f.m.) at the face.On the basis of this short investigation, no final conclusions can be made on the effectiveness of water infusion in reducing the amount of fine dust liberated during mining in the Pittsburgh coal seam. However, the data indicate that dust reduction resulting from infusion would be small.INTRODUCTIONThe production of fine coal dust is an inherent part of nearly every phase of mining. The use of large, high-speed continuous-mining machines and other mechanical equipment has increased dust production. In addition, in coal seams that have been subjected to high pressures for a long period, and particularly in dry and friable seams, some very fine dust is in the seam before mining. Much effort has been devoted to allaying and collecting at its source the fine coal dust released during mining. One of the comparatively recent techniques that has been developed for this purpose is infusion of water or other liquids into the coal seam. This method consists of injecting water under pressure into a coal seam to neutralize the fine dust released during mining. The water generally is introduced through bore holes in the face before undercutting."

"According to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, Abandoned Mine Land Inventory System, in 2013 there were 98 underground mine fires in nine states. This is considered to be an underestimate for the actual number of fires nationwide. Many mine fires are started by people burning trash where the coal seam or an abandoned coal mine is close to the surface. Other fire ignition sources include lightning and forest fires. Once ignited, a coal mine fire can easily spread into the remaining coal pillars and mine entries. Once established, the fire creates its own ventilation system supporting further combustion by drawing air down into the workings through unsealed mine shafts, fractures and surface subsidence depressions. As the coal left in the workings from the past mining operations burns, the mine void can collapse, causing subsidence and creating dangerous voids, damaging overlying surface structures and roadways. The products of combustion include smoke and noxious fumes such as carbon monoxide gas. These products are released to the atmosphere through fractures that develop within the ground surface, killing vegetation and creating serious health hazards (Richmond, 2017).Abandoned mine fires, if left uncontrolled, can burn for years and, in fact, one of the most wellknown mine fires in the United States is the mine fire in the Borough of Centralia, PA, that began on May 27, 1962. Reportedly, officials decided to clean up the local landfill for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday by burning the garbage on the site. Unfortunately, the landfill was located on the site of an abandoned strip-pit mine on the edge of the Borough (Dekok, 2009). The strip pit had been left open after being excavated around 1935 and was approximately 23 m (75 ft) wide and 15 m (50 ft) deep. It is believed that the lack of a properly constructed noncombustible shale barrier in the strip pit enabled the fire to spread to adjacent carbonaceous refuse material and then to nearby coal mine workings (PA DEP, 2017). As time went on, the fire grew and spread under the Borough and directly affected the residents despite various efforts to extinguish the fire by the state and federal governments (Fig.1). In 1984, a voluntary program was begun to move residents from their homes. Many accepted buyout offers for their properties and moved elsewhere and after leaving, their homes were demolished. In 1992, the state used eminent domain to take control of all the property within the Borough. In 2013, after years of litigation, the eight remaining residents were allowed to stay for as long as they lived. Today, only a few buildings remain within the Borough (Centralia, PA, 2014). This fire has been burning for more than 55 years."

The European Guideline ETAG 027 - 2008 (?Guideline for European Technical Approval of Falling Rock Protection Kits?) defines the procedures to test rock fall barriers. Nowadays, this guideline is essentially the only test and construction framework utilized by manufacturers and it is also starting to enter in the mentality of designer who can clearly specify the performances of rockfall barriers. ETAG 27 (and the related European Technical Approval and the CE marking) represents a milestone for the rockfall barrier market, because it gives the possibility to compare the performances of different fences and it ensures the quality of the certified product. For these reasons ETAG 27 presently constitutes the base for tenders all around the world. Although rockfall barriers are in common use, designers and consultants do not have a clear overview of the real performances and the technological limits of these structures. The first problem can be solved using ETAG 27 criteria, which allow designing rockfall barriers at ultimate and serviceability limit state. Even though ETAG 27 uses crash tests performed with the Service Energy Level (SEL) and Maximum Energy Level (MEL), design with these concepts is not obvious or in common acceptance. Some preliminary questions must be solved. When can these energy levels be correctly applied? In the case of rockfall simulations, what probabilistic approach must be used for the evaluation of the barrier? Unfortunately ETAG 27 does not give any information or tests relating to the technological limits of the fences. Therefore some important questions arise. How do the site specific aspects of installation affect the barrier performance? What is the behaviour of the barriers under extreme conditions? And finally, the main question lies in the background: what is the functional reliability of ETAG 27? All of the above questions require comprehensive answers, which is consistent with the experience of designers, installers and producers. The research work objective is to study a new ladle shroud internal design to reduce the slag emulsification in the tundish during ladle transient periods. A 3D mathematical model of the tundish was created to solve the fundamental equations, a turbulence model, and a multiphase model. The results show that using a conventional ladle shroud, the fluid is delivered with an excessive amount of kinetic energy being dissipated inside the tundish bath, generating strong mixing flow patterns and entrapping a massive amount of slag. In the other hand, the proposed ladle shroud dissipates the kinetic energy before the fluid enters the tundish promoting less intense mixing patterns; thus, the amount of slag emulsification is reduced significantly. Consequently, if the internal design of the ladle shroud is able to dissipate the kinetic energy before the fluid enters the tundish, it shall be possible to reduce considerable the slag emulsification and the slag opening area.

The key element in the carbon-in-pulp process for gold processing is the loading of dissolved Au(CN)2 from solution onto activated carbon. The mechanism and kinetics of this step have been examined by solution adsorption-desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for both coconut derived activated carbon and peat-based activated carbon. The results show that these carbon types have the same mechanism and kinetics of adsorption. There is no contribution to the bonding from carbon-oxygen functionalities on the carbon surface, as has been invariably supposed in all previous theories for the mechanism of the reaction. It is shown that Au(CN)Z is reversibly adsorbed intact on and parallel to the graphitic planes of the carbon with the formation of a weak carbon-gold n-donor bond. The kinetic measurement of carbon gold loading reactivity is discussed and use of the Murdoch equation for this test is critically assessed.

IN INTRODUCING the subject of rock pressures, it may safely be assumed that mining men are only too familiar with the physical effects of strata stresses that accompany the extraction of minerals. It may be further assumed that they have, as individuals, arrived at certain conclusions regarding their nature, based upon years spent in observing such phenomena and in learning how to continue mining in spite of them. Such hardly won experience forms the core of what is often referred to as 'pit sense'. This essential type of knowledge is not ?based on theoretical considerations, nor can it be found in text books. It is highly individualistic in nature and almost impossible to pass on from one generation to another in terms of precise rules for guidance. It is this aspect of individual judgment based on practical experience that has led to the significant phrase The Art of Mining.

"Ventilation is one of the most important features of coal mining, and if a mine is exceptionally gassy it is often difficult to ventilate it in such a way as to make it safe. The general system of splitting the main air current so that two, three, or more sets of room entries are ventilated by the same current of air does not provide a safe method if non-permissible electrical equipment, such as cable-reel, crab-reel, or trolley locomotives are used on gathering haulage, or if open-type hoist or pump motors are used. The problem has been greatly simplified at the Crucible mine of the Crucible Fuel Co. at Crucible, Pennsylvania.The system is not only applicable to the room-and-pillar method of mining, but it may be adopted for any panel system of mining. There also appears to be a definite application in mechanized mining, where the rapid extraction often results in inadequate attention to ventilation and where the gassiness of the section generally increases because, as compared to hand loading, the methane has less time to drain off. (NH4)2SO4 can be used with success as a leachant to remove gypsum contained in celestite ores. The process, which is applied before flotation, provides an upgraded feed and problems related to the simultaneous flotation of CaCO3 and SrSO4 are reduced. The process is independent of the gypsum content of the feed so that each leaching stage decreases the gypsum content by almost 50%. The use of (NH4)2SO4 has an insignificant effect on the co-leaching of SrSO4 (0.45 wt.%) at each stage

"Energy efficiency improvements achieved using heat recovery processes offer benefits to both the business case and environmental impact of metallurgical facilities. Global demand drives the development of lower and lower grade ore bodies. This trend results in higher energy intensity and consequently increased waste heat. Waste heat boilers and Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) processes are becoming cost competitive methods of utilizing this waste heat.This study analyzes heat recovery from available sources to produce power using, • High grade: waste heat boiler and steam turbine generator. This system will produce electricity, and/or process steam.• Low grade: ORC to produce electricity. The cycle is well adapted to low- moderate temperature heat sources.Processes used in metallurgical plants, such as hot exhaust streams, cooling and condensers could benefit from application of these systems.The study demonstrates:• The energy and cost saving potential of waste heat recovery technologies,• The environmental benefit.IntroductionIn recent decades, process intensification has resulted in increased productivity from unit operations such as kilns, fluidized bed reactors and smelting furnaces and decreased unit operating costs. In the coming decades, the industry’s challenge will be to continue this trend while at the same time decreasing the consumption of fossil fuels and further reducing the environmental impact of its processes.The U.S. Department of Energy reports that available waste heat sources in industry, which is approximately seven quadrillion BTU (~7,400 PJ/y), exceeds the current production of all renewable power sources combined. In Canada there are about 2,300 PJ/y of available waste heat, with the pulp and paper, metallurgy, chemical/petrochemical and oil refining industries the main players. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan)9 has estimated that about 25% of that heat could be recoverable using existing technologies, which in turn, represents a reduction of 27 Mt/y of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions, plus considerable water savings due to lower water cooling requirements and less fossil fuel consumption."

"Sound Transit’s East Link Project, a $3.7 billion (2015 $), 14-mile light rail extension, will connect downtown Seattle with the rapidly developing east side cities of Bellevue and Redmond. Among the most technically challenging aspects of the Project is the 2,435 foot long Downtown Bellevue Tunnel (DBT), which will be constructed through the central core of Bellevue underneath 110th Avenue NE using a combination of Sequential Excavation Methods (SEM) and cut and cover tunneling. The 1,980 foot long central SEM component of the DBT will be mined at shallow depth through challenging and complex geology, comprised of glacially overconsolidated soils, containing both regional and perched groundwater conditions and in close proximity to existing high rise buildings. The paper shares lessons learned from the planning decisions and risk based approach to the investigation, design and procurement processes which shaped the DBT configuration and enabled a successful transition to the project’s construction stage. INTRODUCTION The East Link Project is a voter-approved $3.7 billion (2015 $), 14-mile extension of the existing Sound Transit (ST) light rail transit (LRT) system from downtown Seattle, across Lake Washington via I-90, to the cities of Bellevue and Redmond on the east side of Lake Washington. With targeted completion in 2023, East Link will provide riders with an efficient and reliable connection between the largest population and employment centers on the east side and downtown Seattle. The project alignment is indicated in Figure 1 below.ST completed the Preliminary Engineering (PE) phase of the East Link project in late 2011. Subsequently the final design contract for the easternmost seven miles of the project was awarded to the H-J-H Team, a joint venture comprised of HNTB, Jacobs Engineering and Hatch Mott MacDonald in February 2012. H-J-H’s final design scope includes approximately 7 miles of double-track LRT between the east end of the I-90 East Channel Bridge and the Overlake Transit Center Station. While the project scope is extensive and diverse, the focus of this paper is the DBT. The DBT is located immediately north of the East Main Station, and travels approximately one half mile through downtown Bellevue under 110th Avenue NE between Main Street and NE 6th Street; terminating at the Downtown Bellevue Transit Center (BTC) Station. The location and extent of the DBT is indicated in Figure 2."

The compensation-insurance rates for quarrying in North Carolina are 11 times higher than for the State?s major industry, textiles. Some operators are willing to accept this as representing the ratio of existing hazards. This was not true of the management of the Southern Aggregates Corporation, and in 1935 it tools definite steps to correct the idea of its local officials and employees that loss of life and limb in quarries is inevitable. VIRTUALLY every year inventors find one or more startling new uses for one of the varied products of the nonmetallic mineral industries. For example, in November a major step toward positive control of rainfall was made when an experimenter converted a cloud to snow by dropping a few pounds of solid carbon dioxide into it. Other examples of ingenuity in the development of markets and production methods are noted in the following pages. For most of the industrial mineral products one of the outstanding features of 1946 has been the high level of production. There are exceptions, such as quartz crystal and lithium, whose production capacity during the war outgrew current peacetime needs, but they are few. Some technical men point out that this prosperity is not an unmixed blessing to technologic progress, because so much effort must go into day-to-day production problems that relatively little opportunity is left for the pursuit of new developments.

A number of problems that developed in processing the halloysitic clays of eastern Washington and northern Idaho were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. The deflocculating effect of tetra sodium pyrophosphate is compared with several other compounds, and on the basis of current theory, the advantage of sodium pyrophosphate as a deflocculating agent is explained. The adsorption of the sodium ion by clay in a clay"-water system was established by a radioactive tracer technique, and the deflocculating action of sodium pyro- phosphate was postulated. The effective dispersion of the halloysitic clays was limited by the occurrence of tightly bound aggregates of small, individual crystals. Disaggregation of the agglomerates was investigated by liquid extrusion and ball milling of dilute slurries and by extrusion of the clay in a plastic state. The greatest increase in the production of small particles was by high? pressure liquid extrusion.
