The rock quality designation (RQD) is a commonly used index for the classification and evaluation of rock mass quality and is widely adopted in mining and geological engineering. The traditional method of obtaining RQD still requires manual measurement of core length and calculation of RQD, which is inefficient. To address this problem, we propose a framework for drilling core image segmentation and RQD estimation from digital images of cores in core boxes based on the deep learning algorithm. The proposed framework is generated by combining the Mask Region-Based Convolutional Neural Networks (Mask R-CNN) instance segmentation algorithm, the U-Shaped Convolutional Neural Networks (U-Net) semantic segmentation algorithm, and the image processing functions of the Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV). To demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method, seven boreholes in the Xiushuihe vanadium-titanium magnetite mine, located in the Sichuan Province, China, were used as the case study. According to the comparison of the manual measurements and calculations of the cores taken from seven boreholes used to conduct this study, the framework can record the length of the drill cores and calculate RQD within an average error rate of 3.42%, while it saves about 85% of the working time. The results illustrate that the proposed framework enhances the efficiency of RQD calculation while satisfying the engineering requirements.

"1880s - Unmasking the Sudbury Basin Falconbridge Ltd. turned 60 in 1988 but its roots go back more than a century to the discovery and development of the mineral resources of the Sudbury Basin. Nickel was first identified in the area in 1856 but sustained exploration awaited the early 1880s and the advance of the CPR westward from Sudbury. Rock was laid bare in the right-of-way and by forest fires and logging. Reddish oxidized outcropping or ""gossan"" were exposed, heralding the presence of nickel as the shape of this astounding geological formation gradually began to emerge. Many great mines of the area were opened up in this period on the south rim of the Basin west of Sudbury. To the east the ore dips below overburden, however, and Falconbridge remained a mere dot on the map until the turn of the century when Thomas Edison detected a magnetic occurrence by dip needle."

The majority of the tailings dam operations in South Africa will be required to comply with the new Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) within the next one to three years, depending on the dam classification and the requirements of the respective investors and insurers. With up to 72 auditable requirements, the implementation of the Standard needs careful planning and prioritization. This paper focuses on the practical steps to GISTM compliance for tailings facilities in operation in South Africa. The discussions are based on current practices, South African regulations, and industry standards requirements. The possible changes in dam classifications and the associated requirements are presented.

The nature of adsorbed calcium carboxylates (oleate and stearate) has been investigated by in-situ/ex-situ Fourier transform infrared internal reflection spectroscopy (FTIR/IRS). Previous spectroscopic studies in alkaline solution have shown that adsorbed carboxylate is characterized by a C-O stretching vibration at about 1550 em?1 for less than monolayer coverage. Similar results were found in this study. More specifically, in this study such a singlet at 1550 cm-1 was found for LB monolayers of calcium distearate transferred as a condensed layer at a high film pressure to the surfaces of fluorite and germanium. Normally the spectrum of bulk calcium distearate reveals a doublet at 1575 and 1540 cm-1, characteristic of a three dimensional 7-fold coordination for calcium carboxylate complexes. This doublet is generally found for carboxylate multilayers formed by spontaneous adsorption at the surface of calcium minerals. In this regard, the spectral evidence suggests that whenever the calcium dicarboxylate is constrained at a surface as a condensed layer, the 7-fold coordination can not be satisfied and the surface carboxylate is forced into a two dimensional symmetrical coordination with a singlet at 1550 cm-1. On the other hand, if the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayer calcium distearate film is transferred at a low film pressure the doublet is observed. This analysis is further confirmed by the spectral results for LB transferred calcium distearate monolayers at a hydrophobic silicon surface. Even though these are condensed monolayers formed at high film pressure, the carboxylate group, oriented away from the surface, is no longer constrained by the surface force field, and thus exhibits the characteristic doublet of the bulk calcium distearate salt.

This report provides information on the techniques and results obtained on representative waterflooding projects in Cowley County, Kans. Records show that waterflooding was begun as early as 1935, but not until 1948 was the method expanded. The greater depths to the oil-producing formations in this area compared to those in eastern Kansas undoubtedly delayed the widespread use of secondary-recovery methods. This report presents a discussion of four waterflooding projects in Cowley County, Kans. The locations of these projects are shown in figure 1. The projects have been in operation from 1 to 7 years and have produced more than 1 million barrels of additional oil by injecting 11.5 million barrels of water. The projects are designed to take advantage of elevation and height of the separator tank to collect by gravity flow the produced brine at the respective treating or storage tanks. The closed-type water system is used on three of the projects and an open-type water conditioning system on the fourth. On one of the projects, which was drilled along a narrow shoestring formation, alternate well, were converted to input wells. However, most of the input wells for flooding converted producing wells.

THE Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (30 U.S.C., 321-325, and amendments) become law April 5, 1644, and a period of intensive research and development in this field was begun by the Bureau of Mines. As part of this program bulletins were published on a pressure hydrogenation,3 the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,4 and oil shale.5 The Bureau also has published a short bibliography on coal gasification,6 mostly of a theoretical nature. Because coal gasification is prerequisite to Hither the Fischer-Tropsch or coal-hydrogenation processes, publishing this sizable, collection of technical information in this form will be valuable. The material is presented in three parts, as follows: I. United States Patents. II. United Kingdom, Australian, Canadian, and South African Patents. III. Belgium, French, German, Italian, and Swedish Patents. The domestic patents for this bulletin were collected between 1963 and 1955. Some of the Foreign Patents were collected at the same time and a few of them later in 1961. Part I was published in 1960; Part II was published in 1962.

"Geometallurgical models are a strategic tool used primarily in planning, diagnosis, and process optimisation. This paper discusses the development of a predictive model for flotation recovery at Kansanshi concentrator in Zambia as a function of key operational parameters. Daily data for milling and flotation from the circuit processing the copper sulphide ore was analysed. This data, recorded over a period of one year of production, was collected from diverse sensors measuring semi-autogenous milling and flotation parameters. Statistical analysis showed that copper head grade, acid-insoluble, and acid-soluble copper, SAG mill throughput, ball mill load, and tonnage of feed material to the SAG mill in the -125 +63 mm size fraction contributed to the prediction power of the proposed empirical model by as much as 90%. Finally, a proposal was made for the development of a simulation model under MODSIM®, a flexible tool for mineral processing applications. This was to test the limitations of the empirical model for future refinement. IntroductionKansanshi is the largest copper mine in Africa and the world’s eighth largest copper producer, with a total of 253 272 t of copper produced in 2016 (Newall, 2017). It is located approximately 10 km north of Solwezi, the capital and administrative headquarters of the North Western Province, Republic of Zambia. The ore deposit consists predominantly of chalcopyrite and malachite with variable amounts of chalcocite, bornite, chrysocolla, and azurite. Because of the varying proportions of sulphide and oxide copper minerals, the ore is classified into three distinct categories: sulphide, mixed, and oxide ores. As such, three separate processing circuits are used to mill the ore down to a standard targeted grind size of 80% passing 150 µm before froth flotation and leaching.A lot of research and development has been done to improve the performance of the sulphide ore circuit at Kansanshi. Despite the research efforts and subsequent operation, the sulphide ore circuit did not attain the target recovery and grade for 2016, primarily because of the complexity of the orebody.The constant drive to achieve the set production target of recovery and concentration grade after froth flotation motivated the development of a tool for the prediction of recovery. The anticipated benefit is not only to enable the plant to apply corrective actions when needed, but also to make a tool available for the quick assessment of the plant performance of the. For that purpose, data spanning June 2016 to May 2017 was analysed, cleaned up and curvefitted to an empirical model. In doing so, key parameters were determined and calibrated to represent the behaviour of the plant."

General Electric introduced electric drive systems on 85 ton Off-Highway mining trucks in the early sixties. Due to favorable economics, trucks have increased in size to handle larger payloads. Series Motorized Wheel systems were developed to meet this demand. When the technology was available, General Electric switched from use of Series motors to separately excited motors with the added benefits of static exciters and simplified control. Over 20 years of electric drive experience have been incorporated in the STATEX drive systems, which covers truck sizes from 85 to 220 tons. This paper traces the drive system developments from the early stages to the present and takes a look at what's ahead.

The Ok Tedi porphyry copper-gold mine is located in the Star Mountains of Western Province, Papua New Guinea. Open-cut mine commenced in 1984 and is due to cease around 2010. The mine produces a total of 88 Mt of waste annually including 58 Mt overburden and 30 Mt tailings, which are discharged directly in to the Ok Tedi River. Mine derived wastes are transported downstream and deposited within the river channel in a variety of bar forms. The prevailing hydrogeological conditions including, velocity, competency, capacity, gradient, grain size and specific gravity, control the deposition and segregation of these sediments. Periodic exposure of the reactive sulfides to oxygen during fluctuations in the river discharge may result in oxidation, localised acid generation and liberation of metals into solution. To evaluate the significance of this issue, Ok Tedi Mining Limited initiated an investigation of the sediments deposited in the upper Ok Tedi River as part of its overall ARD Management Program. The specific objectives were to: evaluate the acid-forming characteristics of identified high sulfide river deposited sediments; characterise geochemically the waters in contact with sulfide-bearing river deposited sediments; map and monitor exposure areas and oxidation depth of deposited potentially acid forming (PAF) sediments; determine the depositional processes controlling sulfide distribution; and assess lag period, oxidation and metal release rates for the sediments. This work included the analysis of sediment and water samples collected on a 50 + 50 metre grid at six gravel/sand bars. The sediment samples were analysed for total sulfur, ANC, NAG, total sulfur and total copper. Water samples were tested for general water quality parameters, sulfate and a suite of dissolved metals including; Al, Ca, Cd, Cu, Fe-sol, K, Mg, Mn, Na, S and Zn. This paper presents the results of these investigations with particular emphasis on the geochemistry of the river sediments and associated contact waters.

Electrooxidation techniques were investigated on a bench scale by the Bureau of Mines to determine the applicability of the process for extracting molybdenum and rhenium from low-grade molybdenite concentrates. Parameters affecting the extraction, such as pulp density, power consumption, reagent requirements for pH control, and electrolytic cell configuration, were studied. Molybdenum and rhenium extractions of 98 to 99 percent were achieved from several concentrates containing 4.76 to 28.6 percent molybdenum and 180 ppm to 1,000 ppm rhenium. Optimum results were obtained by maintaining pH values between 5.5 and 7.0 during electrolysis and allowing the final pH to rise to about 8.2. Reagent consumption was 4 to 6 pounds of sodium carbonate per pound of molybdenum extracted. The power consumption declined from a range of 12 to 25 kilowatt hours per pound of molybdenum extracted with immersion electrodes to 9.7 kilowatt hours with a bipolar flow-through cell; however, molybdenum extraction was independent of cell configuration.

The Bureau of Mines made laboratory-scale experiments to examine the technical possibilities of reclaiming manganese from slags produced by oxygen lancing of high-manganese pig iron. Ferromanganese was added to molten pig iron to yield a 4-to 5-percent manganese hot metal, which simulated a product obtainable from the blast furnace. This was injected with oxygen to reduce the metal to 1 percent or less manganese and form a slag containing about 40 percent manganese. The molten slag was water-quenched, treated with H2SO4) roasted at 660° C, and water-leached to give soluble manganese and iron sulfates. The sulfates were precipitated as hydroxides, converted to the oxide form, and smelted to produce a standard ferromanganese containing 74.6 percent Mn and 0.01 percent P. As an alternate method of manganese recovery, a manganese cell feed was prepared from the leach solutions and electrolytic manganese was produced. Direct smelting of the high-manganese slag resulted in 74.2 ferromanganese meeting ASTM specifications except for phosphorus content. The high phosphorus content of the metal and high slag-to-metal ratio obtained made this approach unattractive.

Oxide mixtures of nickel (NiO), cobalt (COO) and chromium (Cr203) were prepared with graphite in stoichiometric amounts and the powder mixtures were compacted to produce cylindrical pellets. The composition of chromium oxide in these mixtures were varied. Pressed pellets were reduced in a flowing stream of argon-4% hydrogen gas (500 ml/min). Both slow and rapid heating methods were adopted to raise the temperature of a pellet during reduction of oxides to form superalloy powder. The reduction temperature was varied between. 1523 and 1623K. The effect of heating rate and niobium oxide addition on the microstructure of the superalloy produced was studied by using ordinary light and scanning electron microscopes. New phases formed as a result of reduction were identified by X-ray powder diffraction technique. The mechanism of reduction of oxides together with the microstructure of NiCrCo alloy are discussed. The thermodynamics of formation of ternary alloy phase is elucidated on the basis of binary phase equilibria and Gibbs free energy of mixing data for the constituent alloy compositions.

The purpose of this paper is to present to the operator in other districts a detailed description of ho mining method used ins results obtained in tie exploitation of the bedded magnetite deposits of the Mineville district. The town of Mineville is situated in the Adirondacks, five miles west of Port Henry on Lake Champlain.

This paper reviews recent advances in geophysical tools for mineral exploration. It does not restrict comments to methods which are usually applied in the tectonically active belt surrounding the Pacific Ocean, where geophysics has often been secondary to geological prospecting (eg visual recognition of surface alteration) and drainage geochemistry; but considers geophysical tools applied to a broader range of both deposits and terrains. For example, the subdued topography of much of Australia and Canada has lent itself to the development and extensive application of airborne methods. In Australia, deep weathering and transported cover have necessitated the use of geophysical methods to not only detect anomalies but also to map and understand basement geology. This same weathering has caused specific problems, particularly for electrical methods, but recent improvements in instrumentation, processing and visualisation have largely overcome them. A great deal of geophysical data is now being collected by government agencies, often from the air, and made readily available to explorers. In several Australian states it is free, often on line, and in almost all cases it is relatively cheap. These regional data sets are often augmented by more detailed local surveys in areas of interest. Although æanomaliesÆ are still important much more is being done with the high quality data which is now available The results are used for geological mapping, to test geological hypotheses, to construct detailed 3D geological models and, together with fluid flow modeling, to predict optimum locations for mineralisation.

This report describes an investigation of the technical feasibility of using a conventional commercial-size (10-ft. i.d.), rotating grate, dry-ash-removal type gas producer to make producer gas from chestnut-size bone anthracite. Test instruments were installed, and some minor changes were made in the equipment to handle the large quantities of materials expected. Extensive tests, lasting about 4 weeks, were planned, using 35 to 50 percent ash chestnut anthracite bone. However, operations were suspended after 8 days when it became apparent that to use this type of fuel satisfactorily substantial changes in equipment and operating procedures would be required. Nevertheless, enough data were obtained to indicate that gas could be produced continuously and routinely from bone coal in this type of producer whenever conditions justified the necessary development work.

(communication to the Secretary†):—The very interesting results obtained by Prof. Hofman and his assistants came to my attention when I had temporarily assumed charge of the metallurgical department of the Missouri School of Mines, and had found it, pending the completion of a new building, lacking a furnace in which to roast ore preparatory to the customary lead blast-furnace run. An attempt at lime-roasting had been already determined upon, but the use of a charge which would make a slag of definite composition was a new idea. The results following were obtained by Messrs. Aubrey Fellows, J. C. Long, E. R. Wash, and Dr. T. C. Tseung, under my supervision. High stress underground mining poses a significant challenge to rock mechanics and rock engineering. To overcome theses challenges significative improvements in solutions and best practices of the design and operation of mines under high stress have been developed and implemented. This paper presents certain topics related to the management of high stress for sustainable underground mining. The topics include; the effect of preconditioning techniques (destress blasting and hydraulic fracturing) in the seismic rock mass response to underground mining and the dynamic behaviour of rock support systems. The opportunities associated with research in rock mechanics and practical rock engineering are discussed.

"The curtailment of imports of foreign potash during the World War directed attention to the necessity of establishing a domestic source of potash for fertilizer, and considerable study has been given to the subject by Government bureaus, research organizations, and private individuals. These studies have covered all known sources of potash, and among them the extensive greensand deposits of New Jersey in which the potash content is found in the mineral glauconite have been investigated.Several hundred patents have been obtained covering processes for the extraction of potash from siliceous minerals, but up to the present time none have proved successful on a large commercial scale.When the investigation of the potash deposits of Texas was started by the Federal Government, the laboratory study of the drill cores was assigned to the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station at New Brunswick, New Jersey, with the object of ascertaining a possible commercial method of utilization.The purpose of this preliminary study was to investigate existing literature and previous investigations to ascertain the extent and availability of the deposits, the extent of commercial success so far attained in potash extraction, the most promising known methods and by-products obtained from them, probable markets, and possibility of competition with foreign potash, and by a study of these data to determine whether further chemical engineering analysis and laboratory investigation were warranted.As the study advanced it became evident that adequate reserves of green-sand were available for many years supply. and that whereas many processes had been patented few had been tried commercially. "The purpose of this paper is to review the most effective methods of reducing chloride transfer and chloride removal in the solution extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW) process. Elevated chlorides in electrolyte have various negative effects including a reduction in current efficiency, increased handling costs at rod plants and smelters, increased anode corrosion, cobalt losses due to increased electrolyte bleed, degradation of HDPE piping, and increased corrosion in the SX/EW plants. Historical controls that Sierrita has used to control chloride transfer, in order of effectiveness, have been chloride gasification at the EW that is directly correlated to amperage and chloride concentration in electrolyte, wash stage bleed and efficiency, width and velocity of aqueous bands, and electrolyte bleeds. Maintaining high bleed rates and high amperage settings has been a challenge with decreasing pregnant leach solution (PLS) grades, so keeping chlorides out of the electrolyte has become imperative. The effectiveness of reducing aqueous entrainment, optimizing wash stage efficiencies, and improving organic quality to reduce the transfer of chlorides to the electrolyte are illustrated in this study. INTRODUCTION The transfer of impurities from PLS feed streams to electrolyte in the Copper Solution Extraction process is a very common problem and is the reason that the wash stage exists in most SX operations. The main impurities affecting the SX process are iron, chloride, nitrate, and manganese. Elevated chlorides in the electrolyte have various negative effects including reduced current efficiency, increased handling costs at rod plants and smelters, increased anode corrosion, increased cobalt losses due to increased electrolyte bleed, degradation of HDPE piping, and increased corrosion in the SX/EW plants. Freeport-McMoRan Sierrita Hydromet is unique in that a high-chloride byproduct stream from the molybdenum process is pumped into the SX raffinate solution pond. This byproduct steam accounts for the majority of chloride introduced to the circuit, and over the years has built up to a point where 4000ppm chloride is consistently in the PLS feed to the SX. Concentrations of chloride over 70 ppm in electrolyte will result in downgraded cathode, so it is important to limit chloride carryover from SX as much as possible. Historically, Sierrita has been able to manage chloride levels with reactive techniques including increasing electrolyte bleeds and rectifier amps. Decreasing copper in PLS has made high amps harder to maintain, and increasing bleed rates have a direct impact on production goals."
