Electric power curtailments resulting from the coal strike, required Noranda Aluminum, Inc. to shut down its 140,000 ton-per-year (tpy) primary aluminum smelter at New Madrid, Mo., and layoff 308 workers. Other primary aluminum production facilities affected by the coal strike included the Aluminum Company of America plant at Evansville, Ind. which shut down half of one potline; the Eastalco Aluminum Co., smelter at Frederick, Md., which cut production by 7 percent; and the National-Southwire Aluminum Co. plant at Hawesville, Ky. which cut production by 6 percent. Alumax, Inc. announced that construction had started on a 91,000 tpy potline at the Eastalco primary aluminum smelter. The new potline will be owned 65 percent by Alumax and 35 percent by Mitsui & Co. Ltd. Howmet Aluminum Corp., which currently owns 50 percent of the existing 176,000 tpy facility, has the option of becoming a 50 percent owner of the third potline in 1982. Construction of the new line was scheduled to be completed in 1980.

The final report for Phase II of Bureau of Hines Contract J0134025 concerns the research and development of sensitive ground-fault relays for dc utilization systems in mining. Sensitive relaying employs very low pickup levels such that, when used in conjunction with very high resistance grounding, the exposure of a human to ventricular fibrillation is significantly reduced. To delineate the desired relay characteristics, the report begins by reviewing previous research in this area. A theory for the saturable transformer used to sense the fault current is presented. The design of the ground fault relay is described in sufficient detail that it may be duplicated. Test procedures and results are given. Finally, conclusions and recommendations related to Phase II are presented.

This paper will first give a short overview of the Copper Mountain project in British Columbia, which just has started commercial operation earlier this year. The grinding process with one 34' x 20' SAG mill and two 24' x 39.5' ball mills will be briefly discussed. All three mills are gear driven by a ring gear, dual pinion and two low speed synchronous motors. Copper Mountain has installed on all three mills, the new state-of-the art dual pinion mill drives. All the inherent operation and maintenance features of this drive technology will be discussed, as well as the advantage of having variable speed control also on the ball mills. The installation and commissioning of the mills and drives at Copper Mountain will be briefly reviewed. Finally the first field measurements on these low speed mill drives will be presented, with the main focus on the low mechanical stress impact of these mill drives on the pinion and ring gear, as well as the accuracy of the load sharing between the two motors.

Flotation feed density is an operating parameter which is currently not well understood. Most models of flotation only incorporate its effect on particle residence time, but it is likely to have additional effects within both the pulp and froth phases of the machine. Test work was performed in MetsoÆs 3 m3 RCS test rig to investigate the effect of flotation feed density on metallurgical performance. The rig was operated at Rio TintoÆs Northparkes operation using flotation feed and scavenger tail. For each feed, tests were performed at different feed densities, and measurements were performed to estimate the pulp and froth recovery as well as other key flotation parameters (eg bubble size, turbulence and froth stability). Results of this test work have shown that the pulp density does affect key parameters of the flotation process in both the pulp and froth phases. Pulp phase kinetic rates decrease at high density and this is attributed to a reduction in the turbulence within the cell. Froth phase recovery, however, improves presumably because of a stabilising effect due to a greater loading of solids on bubble surfaces.There is a need for more research to be done to better understand these interactions so that metallurgists can determine the optimum flotation feed density to use at a particular operation, or within a section of a flotation circuit.CITATION:Runge, K C, Tabosa, E, Crosbie, R and McMaster, J K, 2012. The Bureau of Mines studied reinforcement of sulfur concretes using glass, polyester, and aramid fibers. The objective of this research was to determine the feasibility of fiber-reinforcing the sulfur concrete to enhance the flexural properties. Optimum fiber sulfur concrete compositions were formulated with a cement-to-fiber ratio of 9.0:1 for glass-fiber and polyester-fiber sulfur concretes and 12.1:1 for aramid-fiber sulfur concretes. Test samples were prepared using techniques developed by the Bureau of Mines. Flexural strength values of up to 50 pct of compressive strength values were achieved with fiber additions. With non-fiber-reinforced sulfur concrete, the values ranged up to 20 pct. The impact strength and fracture toughness of sulfur concretes were increased sig-nificantly by reinforcement with glass or with aramid fiber and were adversely affected by use of polyester fiber. Strain tolerance was doubled and failure mode was shifted from catastrophic to noncatastrophic type by adding glass fiber. The glass-fiber and aramid-fiber sulfur concretes are resistant to acid corrosion and have proved durable in freeze-thaw cycles. This laboratory and field evaluation has shown that fiber reinforcement of sulfur concrete is feasible and that it enhances the flexural properties.

The literature on radium is already voluminous, but mcuh of it is too technical to be intelligible to the average reader, and there is no single publication that covers certain economic features of the radium industry. As a result of the renewed interest in the possibilities of domestic carnotite deposits a number of requests have been made to the Bureau of Mines for information, more particularly with reference to the business aspects of the industry. In order to meet this apparent need, the present paper has been prepared from material available in the files of the bureau. The technical data are compiled from various sources and are believed to be reasonably dependable, but the attempt has been not so much to achieve meticulous scientific accuracy as to brim; together facts of industrial significance and popular interest. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Radium is a brilliant white metal that melts sharply at about 700°C. and volatilizes appreciably at that temperature. With an estimated specific gravity of nearly 6.0, it is more than twice as heavy as aluminum and 25 per cent lighter than irons. Although it has been isolated in its metallic state, it is not used in that form, partly because it tarnishes rapidly even in dry air (forming a nitride), partly because of the greater expense of reducing it to metal, and partly because of the difficulty of dealing with such minute quantities of material. It is used always in the form of its compounds, the most important of which from the vie point of utilization are the bromide, chloride, and sulphate.

INTRODUCTION THE property of Madsen Red Lake Gold Mines, Limited lies between Russet and Faulkenham lakes in Baird and Heyson townships, district of Patricia, Ontario. It is about six miles south west of the town of Red Lake, with which it is connected by an all-weather road. All orebodies found to date at the property are silicified lenticular bodies which lie within tuff beds. The ore bas a specific gravity of 2.95. It consists of mica and chlorite schist, silicified and containing a considerable amount of disseminated carbonate, and mineralized with pyrite, pyrrhotite, magnetite, arsenopyrite, and chalcopyrite. Of these, pyrite, in coarse to fine disseminated grains, is by far the most abundant. Pyrrhotite occurs in ?the gangue material as medium to fine disseminated grains. A very small amount of arsenopyrite, in small crystals, is associated with the pyrite, and small grains of chalcopyrite occur in both gangue and pyrite. Although some of the gold present in the ore is quite coarse, a good deal of it is extremely fine.

The mining industry has expanded significantly in the Pacific Region over the past two decades through a mix of new developments and brownfields expansions of existing operations. Despite this overall success there are also a number of well publicised examples of less than successful minerals ventures. These problem developments highlight the fact that success cannot be taken for granted and that rigorous planning and attention to detail is essential. The dominant growth has come through expansion of existing businesses, notably alumina, iron ore and coal, achieved through both efficiency gains on existing plant and step change capacity additions such as new mines and/or expanded processing plant. This expansion has largely been linked to increased market opportunities. The major issues are the quality and extent of the host resource, achieving the market targets, and the efficiency of the expansion effort. There can be also a range of site specific issues which need to be addressed. The development of new greenfields operations is often more complex as it can bring a wide range of new issues. Depending on the nature of the development, and the companies involved, these can extend from initial financing through to obtaining a market position. Incorporating major new technology and/or establishing infrastructure and attracting staff to remote locations can also add significant challenges. This paper outlines many of the critical factors which need to be considered prior to proceeding with major expansions or greenfields developments. These will be linked to a number of developments in the region over the past decade.

Organized efforts toward the prevention of injuries and occupational diseases have been of comparatively recent origin in the mining industry, dating generally from the beginning of this century. Mining-and particularly underground mining- is more hazardous in many respects than most other major industries, and continual and increasing attention has been given to its health and safety aspects. The importance of the physical well-being of those engaged in mining was recognized by Agricola, who, after describing the hazards encountered in 16th century mining operations, stated that "Some of these evils, as well as certain other things, are the reason why pits are occasionally abandoned." In the past 50 yr particularly, mine managements and labor organizations, separately or collectively, have mounted productive efforts toward the prevention of accidents and industry-associated diseases and illnesses. A statistical study of this period indicates that increasing awareness coupled with the endeavors of all concerned agencies has resulted in decreasing frequency of occurrences of injuries and illnesses. In recent years particularly the mining industry has used the services of safety engineers, industrial hygienists, inspectors, ventilation engineers and other specializing in locating and correcting deficiencies affecting the welfare of employees. Concurrently, the labor movement has incorporated into its organization individuals working in the fields of health and safety, many devoting full time to these responsibilities. Others serve in behalf of their fellow workmen as on-the-job safety representatives. Most authorities agree that accidents are caused by (1) unsafe acts, (2) unsafe conditions and, exceptionally, (3) Acts of God. The "unsafe act" often is cited as the prime cause. but many accidents, and attendant injuries, are the result of a blend of "unsafe acts" and "unsafe conditions," with each chargeable in varying proportions. It therefore is necessary to consider both the physical elements of the mine plant and the training, mental attributes and actions of all personnel involved. Analysis of an accident, if based on hasty reconnaissance and unduly hurried questioning, seldom will disclose more than surface causes and consequently will result in inadequate measures to prevent repetition. Mining involves unavoidable and calculated risks, as in all facets of life. It is most important then that men employed in mining be schooled in the hazards and develop fully the ability to evaluate and minimize risks. The environment, of underground mining often is harsh and strange compared to the more natural surface conditions man has learned to cope with as a part of established life patterns. The miner. therefore, must adapt to unusual situations and conditions and must develop a mental attitude permitting acceptance of change. 3.1-INDUSTRY-AFFILIATED SAFETY AGENCIES L. S. Blast furnaces of high specific throughput capacities producing 10,000 tpd of pig iron or even more, require burden materials which, because of their chemical, physical and metallurgical properties, guarantee such high performances. Meanwhile, it should be generally accepted that for evaluating the quality of iron ore pellets, it is not sufficient to know the chemical analysis and the physical properties, i.e. grain size distribution, cold compression strength and abrasion of the fired pellets. It is indispensable to determine the metallurgical properties indicated by swelling, reduction-softening under load and reducibility, as well as grain disintegration in the low-temperature range in the beginning of reduction. By introducing new test methods, and in the face of the need to meet more strict requirements, pellet producers are being confronted with steadily increasing tasks and problems which require a deepening of our knowledge of the ways and means of making high-quality iron ore pellets.

This paper will introduce some innovative strategies for simulator training that are intended to improve the level of safety and operational performance of heavy equipment operators. The key strategy is to design simulator training to deliver improved work performance outcomes. This strategy is underpinned by a process for engaging workers in knowledge discovery and transfer that has been developed as an outcome of an Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funded project conducted at open cut coal mines in Australia. The process is expected to deliver improvements in the safety and operational performance of heavy equipment operators by informing training content about how experienced operators manage unexpected situations around the site. Tapping into the tacit knowledge that experienced operators gather over time can provide site specific and timely information about situational cues used to manage the unexpected. This type of information complements basic skills training by helping the trainee understand the operational context in which the acquired skills will be applied. Inexperienced operators have traditionally gained experience through their own actions, observing the actions of others and by taking the advice of mentors who have æbeen there, done thatÆ and developed operational decision making skills for safe and productive work performance. Leadership and mentoring techniques that contribute to effective knowledge delivery will also be discussed.Other simulator training strategies include refresher training, change management, emergency response training and testing the usability of new equipment and technologies prior to their introduction on-site. A key challenge ahead for the resources sector is the development of knowledge elicitation techniques that suit the operational workforce. A challenge for simulation and modelling professionals is to develop and refine techniques that support cost-effective customisation and regular updates of simulator scenarios.CITATION:Leveritt, S and Wood, P, 2012. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report discusses elastic wave velocity and attenuation behavior as an indicator for changes in load and structural integrity of coal samples. Measuring changes in compressional (P)-wave and shear (S)-wave attenuation and velocity under uniaxial and triaxial compression tests revealed their effectiveness for distinguishing changes in applied load and structural failure of samples. The velocity and attenuation values were used in further calculations such as ratios of P-wave to S-wave values, dynamic elastic constants, normalized velocities, and attenuation coefficients to reveal trends for loading and failure. The behavior of both P-wave and S-wave attenuation and velocity together define distinct and consistent phases of load change and failure for uniaxial and triaxial tests. The S-wave velocity and attenuation illustrate changing axial load and initial development of microfractures within the sample preceding structural failure more clearly than those of the P-wave. The attenuation and velocity ratios and dynamic elastic constants (except the bulk modulus) respond to closure of small preexisting fractures within the coal sample with initial loading to failure of coal samples. The attenuation coefficients and normalized velocities reveal trends similar to those shown by velocity and attenuation.

This research, sponsored at Stanford Research Institute by the Grand Junction Operations Office of the U.S, Atomic Energy Commission, was an outgrowth of the concern that presently-known ore reserves may be inadequate to meet the projected demands of nuclear power reactors. The original program at SRI was to design a comprehensive geological information system and use it to store and analyze the very great quantity of data needed to estimate uranium ore reserves. Study of the problem showed that it could be solved only by use of modern electronic data processing techniques, so such a comprehensive system was designed and tested. The system test was satisfactory, but input lead time and total expense were shown to be too great for the system to be practicable for the AEC under present circumstances. Thus, based on results of the earlier research, a specialized and simplified procedure for predicting approximate uranium ore reserves was devised. The prediction is based on general geology of specific area cells of the earth, in order to provide complete volume coverage; the strata in these ores are evaluated for uranium ore favorability on the basis of a few selected criteria in order to allow rapid data input. Since the bulk of U.S. reserves are in clastic host rocks only such strata are considered in this work. This paper describes the structure and some details of the resource system and how it was tested in rn area of the western United States.

Introduction Stamp-Milling and amalgamation is, perhaps, one of the oldest processes of recovering gold from its ores. Many papers, theses, and textbooks have been written on the subject of stamp-milling practice in general, but, to my knowledge, there have been no publications describing the modern stamp-mill as designed, developed, and operated in Nova Scotia. Although it may be said that the gravity stamp-mill is the most primitive, and perhaps the crudest, crushing machine in existence, it is at the same time the most satisfactory all-round milling and amalgamating device yet contrived. Originating in Saxony, and used in North America first in Virginia and Georgia, the stamp-mill, in a primitive form, later found its way to California and Colorado. Here, it speedily developed from an affair of wood shod with iron, and operated with the crudest gearing, to substantially its present form. Briefly, it consists (see Figure 1) essentially of a series of hammers (the stamps), which fall upon a mixture of ore and water contained in a cast-iron box (the mortar). The resulting crushed ore (the pulp) is splashed out through a screen on the front of the box. For some years after the discovery of gold in Nova Scotia, in 1861, the ? arrastra and Chilean mill were used to recover the gold from the rich ores. The stamp-mill followed, and various types were used, principally the California and Gilpin County types. Then, in 1895, Mr. M. R. O'Shaughnessy, one of our foremost amalgamators, conceived the idea of a new type of stampmill, which has since become standard in Nova Scotia gold mines. This mill, unique in its design and operation, is specially adapted for the most efficient extraction and recovery of gold as it occurs in our Nova Scotian ores. It is commonly known as the Underwater Feed type, as opposed to the usual Overwater or Top Feed type, and it may be rightly termed The Nova Scotia Self-Classifying Stamp Amalgamation Mill. It is conceded by experienced mill-men that it is superior to any other type of mill for recovering the very coarse and granular gold typical of the ores of this Province. The particular installation and practice to be described in this paper is that of the Guysborough Mines, Limited, at Goldenville, Guysborough county. Emphasis will be laid on certain operating innovations of extreme simplicity and high efficiency.

The wetting characteristics and water film stability at the talc surface have been studied, particularly the effect of polysaccharides such as guar gum, starch, and dextrin. Talc is a gangue mineral in the flotation of base metal sulfide ores, precious metal sulfide ores, and platinum group metal (PGM) sulfide ores. Talc surfaces were investigated using surface analysis techniques including atomic force microscopy, high-speed video bubble attachment measurements, and wetting film stability measurements using a synchronized tri-wavelength reflection interferometry microscope (STRIM). In the presence of polysaccharides, there is a significant increase in bubble attachment time at the talc surface, but only a slight change in contact angle, which suggests that polysaccharide depression of talc is due primarily to the slow rate of bubble attachment and not due to a change in contact angle. The critical rupture thickness (hc) for a hydrophobic talc surface was found to be 56 nm, while the hydrophilic phlogopite surface of similar structure has an equilibrium film thickness (he) of 25 nm. At low polysaccharide concentrations, the wetting films formed on the talc surfaces were unstable, but at high concentrations the wetting films became stable with similar thickness values as the critical rupture thickness, and bubble attachment did not occur. However, it was found that the critical and equilibrium film thickness values do not change significantly with the polysaccharide type or concentration. The results from this research help us understand further details of film rupture and displacement during bubble attachment.

In this paper we develop a physics-based model for lining erosion in steel ladles. The model predicts the temperature evolution in the liquid slag, steel, refractory bricks, and outer steel shell of the ladle. The flow of slag and steel is due to forced convection induced by inert gas injection, vacuum treatment (extreme bubble expansion), natural convection, and waves caused by the gas stirring. The lining erosion takes place by dissolution of refractory elements into the steel or slag. The mass and heat transfer coefficients inside the ladle during gas stirring are modelled based on wall functions which take the distribution of wall shear velocities as a critical input. The wall shear velocities are obtained from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for a sample of scenarios, spanning out the operational space, and a model is developed using curve fitting. The model is capable of reproducing both thermal and erosion evolution well. Deviations between model predictions and industrial data are discussed. The model is fast and has been tested successfully in a ‘semi-online’ application. The model source code is available to the public at [https://github.com/SINTEF/refractorywear].

Flotation as a versatile multiphase separation technology has been practiced for more than 100 years in coal and mineral processing. Although effective over a wide particle size range, flotation for mineral separation has been largely understood as an art rather than a science, treating the flotation system as a black box. With rapid progresses in microscopic technologies coupled with high speed video recording and imaging analysis, ingénue design of visualization systems has made it possible to understand fundamentals of flotation by visualization. In this presentation, the state of the art where visualization plays a key role in advancing our fundamental knowledge of flotation will be reviewed. The areas to be covered include characterization of bubbles (shape, size, velocity and sol-ids loading) in a running flotation system, either column or mechanical cell, bubble-solid attachment, hydrodynamic cavitation in fine particle aggregation and flotation, froth imaging, particle-particle interactions by zeta potential distribution measurements, and heterogeneous gas nucleation by atomic force microscope imaging. With these capabilities, critical roles, good or bad, of ore proper-ties, solution chemistry, slurry hydrodynamics, and operation variables in flotation systems as applied to mineral, coal and oil sands processing were clearly elucidated.

"The present large-scale use of energy and power by the human species represents a unique event in the billions of years of geologic history. Furthermore, in magnitude, most of the development has occurred during the present century. In the United States, the peak in the rate of petroleum production occurred in 1970 and that for natural gas is imminent. The peak in the world production of crude oil is expected to occur at about the year 2000 and that for coal production at about 2150 or 2200. For other sources of energy and power, water power, geothermal power and tidal power are inadequate to replace power from fossil fuels. Nuclear power, based on the breeder reactor and utilizing lowgrade deposits of uranium and thorium, has a larger potential than the fossil fuels, but it also constitutes a large perpetual hazard. The largest source of energy available to the earth is solar radiation. This source has a life-expectancy of a geologic time scale, is nonpolluting and is larger in magnitude than any likely requirements by the human s pecies. In consequence of the large supplies of available energy, the period since 1800 has been one of an unprecedented exponential industrial growth. This also has been accompanied by a world-wide ecological disturbance, including that of the human population. It can easily be seen that such a period of growth must be ephemeral in character and, in fact, is now almost over. One aspect of this transition from a state of exponential growth to a state of nongrowth is the present alarm over an ""energy crisis."" Actually, the world's present problems are by no means unmanageable in terms of present biological and technological knowledge. The real crisis confronting us is, therefore, not an energy crisis but a cultural crisis. During the last two centuries, we have evalved what amounts to an exponential- growth culture, with institutions based on the premise of an indefinite continuation of exponential growth. One of the principal consequences of the cessation of exponential growth will be an inevitable revision of some of the tenets of that culture."

In November 2009 Mintek installed the FloatStar? advanced flotation stabilization system on Vale's Cauê iron ore beneficiation plant in Brazil. In September 2010 the system was upgraded to include flotation optimization. The circuit consisted of two parallel cleaner circuits producing final concentrate. The tailings from the cleaner section passed through a scavenger circuit. Large, well-instrumented feed sumps played an important role in circuit stability, presenting a good opportunity for advanced control. Previously the plant was controlled using distributed control system (DCS) level control only. The flotation circuit processes roughly 30kt/day. The FloatStar system provided advanced control of the flotation circuit as well as of the sumps feeding the circuit. The system underwent a lengthy trial to assess the benefit that it provided. Two data sets were analysed, showing performance under advanced stabilization and optimization respectively. Several validation and consistency criteria were employed to ensure the quality of the analysis. Iron recovery and iron tailings grade were used to measure system performance. The analysis showed that the system increased recovery by up to 2.7%. In addition, the system decreased the iron tailings grade by between 1.2% (from 23.5% to 22.3%) and 4.3% (from 31.3% to 27.0%) during different test campaigns. The analysis also showed that the entire FloatStar stabilization system was active for 72.7% of the time from first activation to the end of the first data set (approximately 200 days). From the analysis it was concluded that under similar conditions for 'ON' and 'OFF' tests, the system provides a clear benefit. It was also found that over the longer term, the system continues to provide a benefit. This finding suggests that the results were not simply due to a short-term advantage. The size of the data set, as well as the magnitude of the recovery improvements, lends considerable confidence to these results. Therefore, it can be concluded that the FloatStar control system provides substantial benefit to operations at this site.
