Resource modelling is the basis for any economic appraisal of a mining project and includes a number of steps from data acquisition and validation to resource reporting and classification. At each step in the modelling process it is necessary to define the specific objectives, the methodology proposed to achieve those objectives and to establish a set of checks and validation tools to assess the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. The data used has to be both reliable and relevant for the purpose of the modelling. QA/QC for database validation requires verification of sample location; including correct collar location, topographic modelling and down-hole surveying. Validation is also performed on assaying information such as checks for sampling bias and accuracy of core splits, proper use of pulp duplicates and standards, handling of calculated values, explicit/implicit absent data and data entry errors. The second step involves identifying the mineralized domains resulting from the mineralization process. This step requires a geometric interpretation of all relevant geological features that have influenced the spatial distribution of the mineralization including dykes, faults and alteration. In addition, a geologic reference system rather than a standard Cartesian system is established to measure distances between samples. Once the mineralized domains are established and the database has been validated, statistical and spatial description of the mineralized samples are examined in order to establish the histogram and the variogram of all variables of interest and their correlation. Results are also used to calibrate the global resource estimate within the mineralized domain and to establish the search strategy for grade interpolation. The mineral envelope is filled with polyhedral cells representing mining blocks. The average grade of these blocks is estimated using kriging techniques in order to eliminate global bias and to minimize the local error in the block grade estimate. Visual checks are made to validate the spatial trends in grade distribution while global bias and smoothing effect are assessed from the declustered sample statistics. When required, smoothing correction may be applied using ?change of support? techniques. Simulations are used to perform sensitivity analysis and the simulation models are used if severe smoothing of spatial variability makes the interpolated model inappropriate for mine planning. The keys to successful resource estimation are an integrated team of geologists, geophysicists, geostatisticians and mine engineers using the best available technology and reviews by independent auditors. The resource team is also responsible for performing a QA/QC program in order to measure the effectiveness of the methods in meeting the specific objectives at each step of the modelling process.

Raise boring is the preferred option for constructing ventilation shafts in Australia. The trend has been towards larger diameters and longer single-pass shafts, and if at all possible, reaming through to the surface. The risk of raise failures, due to missed, unforseen or latent ground conditions has therefore been increasing, along with the need for better, more confident stability assessments.While the stability of specific weak zones and structures must be assessed individually, empirical rock mass classification schemes have been successfully used for about the last 20 years to assess general raise stability; eg the McCracken and Stacey method (M&S).Unfortunately M&S, as originally documented in McCracken and Stacey (1989), did not include a database of raise diameter and rock mass conditions versus actual performance. Nor was there a procedure for assessing the risk of failure due to adverse ground conditions. Peck and Lee (2008) published an Australian database of raise bore performance. Raise diameter and ground conditions, in terms of a lower bound Qr value, were presented for 50 cases versus raise performance. This paper updates the 2008 raise performance plot with more and SRF-corrected data. McCracken and Stacey (1989) had previously recommended that additional geotechnical data should be acquired and analysed when the proposed raise plotted on the unstable side of raisebore stability ratio (RSR) = 1.3, but the Australian data used in this study also suggests that all sites with Qr Contributions and sensitivities of various rock mass parameters (RQD, Jn, Ja, Jr, Jw, SRF, time-dependent weathering/deterioration) to raise stability and risk of failure are discussed. Numerous case studies are used to illustrate issues with stability assessments.As raises can now be remotely supported using sprayed fibrecrete, questions of time-dependency are also discussed. In recent times, contiguous piles, ‘mini-piles’ and grouting have also been successfully used to presupport or otherwise improve the stability of near-surface sections of weathered, or poor quality rock masses.

As a part of a wartime program to aid in the development of known ore bodies and in the discovery of hitherto unknown deposits of strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of diamond-drilling the Christmas copper deposit, in Gila County, Ariz., to increase the reserves of milling ore. Upon recommendation of the examining engineer, drilling was begun in September 1942, from the bottom (770) level of the mine. One month later, in cooperation with the Bureau, the Federal Geological Survey started geologic mapping of the mine workings. Since extensive and costly development would be required, the War Production Board concluded that ore below the bottom level could not be mined at that time because of the wartime shortages of equipment and man-power. In January 1943, drilling was moved to the 300 and 400 levels to locate reserves readily accessible for continued production of fluxing ore. This drilling, which was under the supervision of L. G. Marshall, was completed in January 1944.

The iron ore mining industry is currently going through an adjustment from high to more moderate growth as China’s economy transitions from capital-intensive investment to a more services-oriented economy. We are now witnessing a renewed focus on productivity improvements and cost savings as planned expansions are completed. Despite the scale and importance that the mining industry plays in the global economy, innovation literature is generally more targeted at faster-moving industries with shorter innovation timeframes and lower capital requirements. To fill this gap, VCI set out to understand the state of innovation in the mining industry in 2014. This State of Play report aims to give an objective appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of innovation in mining. The report has three sections covering both the structure and delivery of innovation in mining:Ecosystem – focused on understanding how the iron ore mining innovation ecosystem system works, including the roles of large and small miners, service companies, researchers and governments. Our recommendations focus on what is required for the system to work well and improve the level and quality of innovation in the industry.Strategy – how do companies define their innovation strategy in relation to their corporate strategy? How are these related to prevailing global and industry trends? How do they communicate this with their business? How successful are they? These are among the questions that this section attempts to answer. Our recommendations are pitched at the executive leadership of iron ore mining and service companies.Delivery – focused on how companies develop and deliver innovation, looking at the success of different structural options, leadership and culture, partnerships and the best approaches to change. The paper presents a survey of the possibilities of the simulation techniques for improving the design and operation of gold processing plants. The procedure to construct kinetic models that are used in simulators is first reviewed, and examples are given for cyanide gold dissolution and gold adsorption on carbon. Then, an overview of the structures of the plant simulators is proposed, and the simulation equations formulated for a carbon-in-leach process. Finally, the potential of simulation methods is illustrated by four examples. The first one shows how it is possible to use a simulator to design a cascade of leaching tanks while optimizing an economic performance criterion. The second one illustrates the role of simulators for optimal tuning of the cyanide addition strategy in a leaching circuit. The third example focuses on the power of simulation to design carbon transfer strategies in a carbon-in-pulp process. Finally, the last example shows the role of on-line simulators for optimally supervising the automatic control of cyanide addition into leaching tanks.

Introduction I am indebted for most of the information in this paper to Mr. P. S. Lea, Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines of Great Britain, and Mr. A. E. Crook, Engineering Inspector of Mines, Ministry of Fuel and Power. Other coal-mining men in Canada may be as surprised as I was to learn that there are twenty-five Diesel locomotives in service underground in British gassy coal mines. Many more are in use underground in non-gassy coal mines and in metal mines. Approval has been granted for an additional fifty flame-proof locomotives to be used in gassy mines, and these should be in operation by the end of 1946, or as soon as manufacturing facilities permit.

South Central United States, an area including Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas, is a net exporter of refractories. Nearly $45 million of these materials was shipped in 1954 from plants in the area, compared with area consumption of $18.5 million. About 88 percent of all refractories production is concentrated in Missouri. The prevalent consumption pattern, however, is one of localized shortages. For example, although Texas uses more than half of the refractories consumed in the South Central United States, production of refractories in Texas is relatively small. Also, the apparent self-sufficiency of the area is in terms of value produced rather than in terms of products consumed. Nearly all of the $6,425,000 nonclay refractories consumed in the area were shipped from other States. Local resources possibly could be developed for making refractories to serve markets that currently are being supplied from outside the area. Since other industries are growing rapidly in the area, the market for refractories is expected to continue to grow--more rapidly than the national market. The Missouri refractories industry is economically important nationally. Nearly one-fourth of the clay refractories produced in the United States are made in Missouri. Moreover, Missouri produces most of the higher grade clay refractories, about 62 percent of the high-alumina refractories, and 85 percent of the superduty refractories. The competitive position of the Missouri refractories industry is strong. The national market for clay refractories and the market in the South Central United States are expected to continue to grow. The ratio of net income to the value of refractories shipped in Missouri is larger than the national average.

Construction of a new ship dock at a major Philadelphia area refinery required geotechnical design and field consultation. The new dock, which consists of a system of mooring dolphins and platforms, will be capable of docking the Stena V-MAX Oil Tanker (V-MAX). The 1100 ft long V-MAX is currently the largest tanker to travel the Delaware River and will induce significant lateral loads on the new ship dock. Lateral loads induced on the dock will be resisted by over 200 pipe piles installed on a batter. The piles used for support of the dock included 20 and 30 in. diameter reinforced, concrete filled pipe piles. Complete construction of each pile included driving of the pile to the design ultimate capacity, flushing the pipe pile casing clean of overburden materials followed by drilling rock sockets into the underlying Wissahickon Formation. Variations in depth to bedrock, rock quality and degree of weathering and presence of very hard quartzite lenses created a complex geologic environment that presented challenges for the pile/rock socket design and installation. The design of the pile system, installation methods, QA/QC and testing (Pile Dynamic Analysis), as well as the challenges that were encountered through the duration of the project are presented and discussed.

The Kidd Creek Copper Smelter has been expanded from its original design of 59,000 tonnes of copper per year to over 120,000 tonnes per year .. Modifications to the process gas handling system and acid plant have been made to accommodate this higher production rate and to .generally optimize the operation. The gas handling system associated with the continuous smelting process is discussed in terms of boiler accretions and modifications to minimize their impact on operations; design changes to effect reductions in high pressure drop duct configurations; material changes to overcome corrosion and plant additions to 'improve gas cleaning capability. The acid plant is reviewed with references to changes made to accommodate the increased S02 gas strength resulting from the higher smelting rates;

AT the McGill concentrator of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., all flotation operations have been carried out in Forrester cells since November, 1926. In respect to cost of operation, the new cell has proved to be superior to the Callow, which it supplanted, and its incorporation in the flow sheet has resulted in a marked improvement in the metallurgy. Before citing the advantages of the new machine over the old, it should be explained that the Forrester has not only replaced the Callow, but it has made possible the elimination of a number of tables as well. When Callow cells were in use, table concentration preceded flotation. The ball mill pulp was elevated, by means of air lifts, to roughing Wilfley tables situated two floors directly above the flotation floor. On an intermediate floor were additional tables which cleaned the concentrate from those above. The finished table concentrate constituted approximately 60 per cent. of the total mill production, and contained about 40 per cent. of the recovered copper. The table tailings were returned to the classifiers, the overflow from which went to the flotation cells and the oversize to the ball mills. As soon as the Forrester cells were installed, this tabling operation was discontinued. The ball mill pulp now discharges into the classifiers direct, without the intermediate tabling. It was impracticable to employ the present flow sheet when Callow cells were in use, for the reason that unless the greater part of the heavy mineral was first removed, it accumulated on the mats and adversely affected the flotation operation. By tabling ahead of flotation, it was practicable to maintain the concentrator at 10 to 20 per cent. greater capacity (depending up on the pyrite content of the ore) than was possible by flotation alone. This was due to the necessity for finer grinding in the latter case. Even though the table concentrates contained only 6 to 8 per cent. copper con- tent, the low smelting costs made it advantageous to operate at high mill capacity, at the cost of low grade of product. "In order to meet the growing demand for non-Chinese rare earth suppliers many new rare earth (RE) mineral deposits are currently under development, however these deposits typically include many minerals for which there is little processing information available. One of these deposits is the Nechalacho deposit located in the North West Territories of Canada. This deposit contains multiple RE minerals including bastnäsite, zircon, fergusonite, allanite and monazite. The work presented here investigates the use of different classes of flotation collectors (carboxylic acids, hydroxamic acids, phosphoric acids) typically used in RE mineral flotation to float the Nechalacho ore directly. Flotation tests are also conducted as the final step in a beneficiation process incorporating centrifugal gravity concentration and magnetic separation. This combination of centrifugal gravity concentration and magnetic separation rejects low specific gravity gangue minerals such as K-feldspar and plagioclase and concentrates high specific gravity minerals such as magnetite and hematite. The removal of low specific gravity gangue helps to improve flotation and the removal of ferromagnetic iron oxides is important prior to flotation using certain chelating collectors."

Potash is one of the essential chemicals used in fertilizing soil deficient in natural minerals . Europe uses a large tonnage of potash in the form of easily soluble salts , and this is particularly true of those countries where the natural minerals in the soil have been exhausted owing to intensive cropping of the land . The application of potash to the soil in these countries is essential if normal crops are to be obtained ; during the war , some European countries were unable to obtain sufficient potash , and productivity of the farming areas declined seriously . • The largest -known deposits of potash in the world ; with the possible. exception of Russia , occur in Germany , and the German output of processed salts constituted about 65 percent of world production prior to the war . The German potash-plant installations are large , modern , brick and steel construction and apparently built for a planned operation of many years . Two districts produced approximately 80 percent of the German potash; the Werra -Fulda district , near Vacha , had the largest production , and the Sudharz district , near Nordhausen and Sonderhausen , was second . (Fig . 1. ) Hannover and Stassfurt were two smaller producers . Potash fertilizers are rated in terms of potassium oxide (K20 ) . The usual basis for calculation of production or application of the salt is to reduce the potash content to 40 percent K₂0 .

"A new automatic material- handling system for cathode transportation has been developed. The first system went into service in August 1994 and the remains will be operational subsequently.Because of the complex cell-layout and the number of cells in each row, the critical part of this work was achieving a planned cycle time. This cycle time is determined by the power costs.The central monitoring system for machine operation was started in June 1996, using original application software based on MICROSOFT EXCEL ® on WINDOWS 95® .As a result, only one person is now required to operate both a crane and a stripping machine for one row of about 50 cells.INTRODUCTIONMainly due to the strong yen and the relatively low price of metal, the zinc refineries in Japan are being forced to reduce production costs again and again.The trend of lijima's production costs is shown in Figure 1.[1] The ratio of labor costs becomes gradually higher. Therefore it is effective to reduce the labor costs in order to reduce the production costs. In Japan, electricity cost during day time is too high to produce zinc at a reasonable cost, that is why the actual production is far from the capacity of production at a cell house. That means a plant in Japan has the disadvantage of relatively low productivity for cell house operation.Saving labor costsSome automatic cranes have been applied to save labor costs for cell house operation in the world. In consideration of the mentioned low productivity, the installation of an Automatic Cathode Transfer (ACn system for transportation of cathodes was planned without changing the present cell house and stripping machines to lower the investment costs. The ACT system must keep up with the stripping machine which is able to strip deposit zinc from a cathode sheet at the rate of 6 seconds.The fifth ACT system of seven was installed in August 1996 and the last one will be operational subsequently."

Experiments were made in a semicontinuous unit to provide engineering data for designing experimental continuous systems . These systems would be used to study the hydrogasification of hvab coal and char (from lowtemperature carbonization ) to high - Btu gas . In experiments at 800 ° C and with a coal residence time of several seconds , yields of hydrocarbon gases increased from about 2,000 scf / ton of maf coal at 250 psig to 7,000 scf at 1,000 psig . With 15 minutes residence time , yields increased from 8,000 scf/ton of maf coal at 250 psig to 17,500 cubic feet at 1,000 psig . In all cases , small quantities of heavy oils were produced along with the gaseous hydrocarbons . Production of oils could be minimized with a corresponding increase in gaseous hydrocarbons by increasing the retention time of the volatiles within the hot zone . Yields of gaseous hydrocarbons from char were slightly greater than from coal under similar conditions . Although the hydrogasification reaction is very pressure dependent , substantial quantities of coal (40 to 60 percent ) could be reacted to gaseous hydrocarbons at pressures as low as 50 psig provided reaction temperatures were increased to 1,200 ° C. It was also demonstrated that a hvab coal could be hydrogasified continuously without incurring agglomeration . This was achieved by dispersing coal in a relatively large reactor with concurrent flow of hydrogen . At 1,000 psig and 800 ° C , it was possible to react about 35 percent of the coal and to produce a gas containing up to 52 percent methane .

A segment of high-pressure steel petroleum pipeline needed to be replaced on a hillside and beneath a waterway within an existing right-of-way containing multiple petroleum pipelines. The pipeline replacement required excavation of sedimentary rock to allow placement of the new pipe. As a result of an existing right-of-way limitation, steep slopes, and hard rock, blasting would be required as close as 7.8 meters (25 feet) from two operating pipelines. Existing pipeline company standards would have effectively precluded the construction of the replacement pipe by blasting rock. To facilitate the required construction and evaluate actual pipe stress during blasting to ensure pipeline integrity, a comprehensive evaluation methodology was developed by a team of pipeline, mechanical, geotechnical, instrumentation, and blasting engineers. A total of 60 strain gages were affixed to the steel pipe and seismographs were buried at the surface near the blasting area. Test blasting allowed pipe stresses with corresponding ground motion to be monitored. A conservative analysis approach evaluated individual peak strains and revealed that only small pipeline strains, and therefore stresses, were induced in the pipeline as a result of blasting. This evaluation allowed specific procedures to be developed to inform the blasting operation of maximum explosive loading and minimum charge distances. Additionally, this effort provided the pipeline operator with appropriate pipeline operating pressures during blasting activities to limit total stresses in the pipeline to be below allowable stresses imposed by code, regulators, and company operational limitations. Recommendations were developed to measure the blast generated ground vibrations with seismographs buried at the depth of the pipe, near the pipe, and limit the ground vibrations from blasting to 150 mm/s (6 in/s). If ground vibration intensities of 120 mm/s (4 in/s) or more were observed, additional engineering review is recommended. Finally, all blasting would be suspended and all activities reviewed at peak ground vibration intensities of 230 mm/s (9 in/s). The evaluation effort resulted in effective and efficient construction of the pipeline replacement and allowed the pipeline operator to better understand blasting induced stresses on their assets.

"INTRODUCTION Water flooding of oil sands in Texas as a means of secondary recovery of oil has been practiced mainly in the north-central part of the State, which includes the old shallow fields in eight counties, extending south through Wichita and Clay Counties on the Red River into Brown County.The Texas Railroad Commission, is empowered ""to promote conservation and prevent waste in the drilling, completion, operation, and abandonment of oil wells"" and ""to issue regulations necessary for fulfillment of these ends,"" granted The Texas Co. the first permit to inject water into the oil-bearing sand on December 7, 1935. The permit was granted after the Commission had conducted a number of hearings, which were attended by many operators interested in that method of secondary recovery. Through December 31, 1944, the Commission had granted 50 permits for water flooding. Of that number, 45 permits were issued for projects in north Texas, the remaining 14 being distributed throughout west and south Texas. By the end of 1944, there were 33 active and 5 abandoned water-flooding projects in the North Texas area, as is in figure I.Oil production in the North Texas area started in 1904 from the shallow sands (ranging from 100 feet to 800 feet in depth) of the Petrolia (or Henrietta) field in northern Clay County. Development was rapid and unrestricted during the boom period from about 1911 to 1918, and considerable waste of both produced oil and reservoir energy resulted."

The Bureau of Mines studied the conversion of a variety of cellulosic wastes, for example, sawdust, bovine manure, sewage sludge, urban refuse (free of metal and ceramics), etc., to heavy oils. The objective of the investigation was to determine the scope of the reaction and elucidate the chemistry involved. The reactions took place in the presence of synthesis gas and water or carbon monoxide and water under conditions of elevated temperatures and pressures. Waste conversions above 90 pct, often near 99 pct, with oil yields in the range of 40 to 60 pct, were obtained in the temperature range of 250° to 425° C and pressure range of 1,500 to 4,000 psig. Because mild conditions were sought, most of the experiments were conducted at temperatures of 250° to 350° C and pressures of 1,500 to 3,000 psig. In general, lower viscosity products were obtained at higher reaction temperatures. Conversions and oil yields were significantly increased by operating in the presence of a high-boiling oil; either anthracene oil or oil recycled from the process was satisfactory. Synthesis gas containing 50 pct carbon monoxide gave satisfactory results as a replacement for carbon monoxide. Cobalt molybdate on alumina catalyst, used with sodium carbonate, gave a product of lower viscosity and lower oxygen content than sodium carbonate used as the sole catalyst. The waste-to-oil process has been successfully investigated in continuous flow equipment as well as in batch autoclaves.

Soapstone commonly is associated with talc , and reports on either commodity usually contain a discussion of the other . From a geological or mineralogical standpoint the combination is justifiable , for soapstone essentially is impure talc . Commercially , however , the relation between them is remote . About 95 per cent of all talc sold in the United States is in ground form, whereas practically all soapstone is sold as furnace blocks or as fabricated structural slabs for many and diverse applications .

"INTRODUCTION The Cranberry magnetite deposits occur in pre-Cambrian granite-gneiss in a belt extending from 3 miles southeast of Cranberry, N. C., to about 6 miles southwest of Magnetic City, Tenn. The belt forms a curve, elongated to the north, approximately 26 miles in length.The Bureau of Mines investigation has been confined to the eastern part of the belt, comprising the area from Fork Mountain, Avery County, N. C., to the Hcupscup Knob prospects in Carter County, Tenn.The deposits were worked at least as early as 1820. The Cranberry Iron & Coal Co. and its successors operated the Cranberry mine intermittently for about 50 years until 1930, when operations were abandoned.The magnetite rock is amenable to concentration. Numerous laboratory tests and pilot-mill operations have proved that a high-iron, and low-phosphorus concentrate can be obtained by fine grinding and magnetic, separation, the quality of the concentrate depending upon the extent of grinding. The principal objectives of the Cranberry project were threefold.The primary consideration for beginning exploration of the deposits was the need for developing additional deposits of high-grade iron ore during the war and for replenishing the war's depletion of iron-ore reserves for the peacetime economy. The emergency did not permit logical sequence bf development, and it was necessary to begin drilling before the geophysical survey was completed. The first drilling was begun at the Cranberry mine; and the holes were located from the geological data, coordinated with the position of the mine workings."
